First year teaching... She messes up a lot and isn't very nice to people who aren't understanding the homework (posting things like THIS IS SO EASY WHAT DONT YOU GET!). I'm not a big fan. Also, there's always little bugs crawling around on the overhead. It's kind of gross. She can be sorta funny, but she treats everyone like they're 12. Good luck!
She is very nice and quite funny. She messes up a little bit but she always corrects it. She goes slow so people who are good at the class can get quite bored and she does treat the students like they are 4 sometimes. Overall, i learned alot and am very satisfied with her teachings.
Is very clear in her lectures, which seem to go very slow if you've taken chemistry before. She goes slowly through lots of problems/examples. Tends to try and "trick" students on clicker questions (which are graded) but overall is pretty nice. Talks to the class like they are 2-year olds, but the class is not too challenging.
Could use some work as far as her teaching ability, but she did try hard.
Talked to the class as if they were children. Easy to understand, but attempted to trick students on clicker questions and test questions. Easy to talk to and responds fairly quick to emails and other questions. Overall an average teacher.
She was one of the best teachers I have had at CU!
Hendrickson is pretty entertaining but has a tendancy to treat her students like five year-olds. Her lectures are pretty interesting (for chem!). Definitly do practice problems from the book before the exams!!!
she tends to talk to students like we are younger but overall a very effective teacher, i wish that i could have gone to her office hours to get more from her as far as help with the class
she was a pretty decent teacher and when asked questions she didn't know, she would research it and get back to us.
Really great professor, funny and wants to make chem easy to understand. Yet very hard class that involves a immense amount of work. Throws a lot of tricks into the test. Go to CHEM help room!! Overall hard class but good professor!!
She is great. Her lectures are very clear and organized. Some people say she talks to you like a little kid, but if you sit up front and get to know her, that's just her sense of humor. She is in no way talking down to her students. Her humor is very dry and sarcastic, and she is not intimidating. She is very easy to relate to. Great prof!
Treats students like they are 5, just like most other people have said. Clickers are not that tricky but the test material is pretty hard. She takes little things herd in lecture and lab and makes complex questions out of them, topics mostly include small aspects herd of once. Smart lady though and knows her stuff, thinks we understand it the same
One of the worst professors ever. She doesn't care about her job and makes you feel dumb.Never take her.
Great prof! She really good at explaining.... however her exams are super super tricky!!!
Fun, excited about chemistry, and good sense of humor. Even though the class was super challenging, I really enjoyed going to class and was grateful for prof. hendrickson's willingness and availability with anything that was confusing. I'm taking a class from her again next semester
I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Dr. H. I thought she was great at explaining things and she was such a character! She seems to enjoy what she does and even though I am forced to take chem again next semester, I'm glad I will have her as a professor.
You know.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken at CU- in any science department..and it was general chemistry..I had a tutor 3 days a week, went to the help room (which was NOT helpful at all), went to every class- the tests are impossible and there is NO curving. O-Chem is easier. literally. This class sucked the life out of me
Sometime I felt like she talked to the class like we were in grade school but overall very clear. Tests weren't terrible but only 20 mc questions makes it easy to loose a lot of points quickly.
She was not helpful in class, and virtually impossible to contact outside of class. She was not a good teacher, I taught myself from the textbook.
Dr. H was very clear in class and the clicker questions are not difficult but her tests are only 25 mc questions, very easy to lose points and incredibly tricky at times-concentrate on the details and the book problems and you'll pass, the help room is really helpful, but that's mostly TAs
Great professor, really. The people who don't think so did not attempt to use the TA helproom, ask questions in class, or talk to her after class. I did all these things, and didn't need to crack open the textbook more than few times. Her tests are tricky but everything is covered in lecture, understanding concepts is key.
Very, very nice person. However, her dark side is designing tests to challenge and/or trick the top 1% of the students. You will need to put in 15+ hours a week outside of class to make a B. Don't expect an A unless you were AP, good at math, and very good at HS chem.
Dr. H writes everything out on the overhead very clearly and its easy to understand and take notes. Her tests can be tricky but if you go to every lecture and pay attention you should be fine. She is very fair. Make sure to go to class cuz missing clicker points will be the death of your grade
Very good teacher. Her tests are hard but overall she is very clear in her notes and lectures. With some hard work it is possible to do well. She is very smart and really funny. I would definitely take her again
I really loved her lectures. I think they were the most thought out and organized out of any of my professors. The tests are somewhat difficult, but that's only because she wants a clear understanding on the topic.
The lectures were very clear, not too much homework. Recitation is pretty useful for practice problems. Labs are easy, but sometime long and time consuming. Overall the class was easier than I was expecting
I am not a strong chemistry student to begin with so the class was not my favorite. She did a good job with notes, however and made learning the material she wanted you to know clear. The only thing I didn't like was not having a practice exam for the final, even if it were just for the last part that we covered (the non-cumulative part).
I really liked Dr. Hendrickson's lecture style. She was great to listen to and worked really hard to make the material understandable. Only complaint was that the practice tests were WAY WAY easier than the actual exams, making me feel like I was prepared when I really wasn't. Still highly recommended, though.
She is a really good teacher who makes everything look really easy, the only complaint is that the tests are wayyy harder than the concept questions that are done in class. But overall a really happy, nice professor
Amazingly helpful and very clear during lecture. One of the nicest and best professors at CU.
Very good at lecturing, writes extremely clear notes on projector, helpful when asked questions, puts on help sessions frequently. Definitely one of my best professors so far.
I love Dr. H - awesome lecturer, she's great at explaining the material, making it interesting and accessible. It's still a tough class, but she makes it worthwhile - highly recommended for first year gen chem. Just be sure you don't rely on lectures alone - they're not enough to get you pass the exams.
A great professor! Unlike a lot of professors who cannot teach, she is crystal clear and very helpful.
The best teacher I have had at CU thus far. Passionate, funny, and very intelligent about chemistry. Wouldn't take chem with another professor
Hendrickson managed to make intro chem somewhat interesting
This teacher is amazing. If you can take both chemistry 1 and 2 with her. She does fun demos, has multiple ways of explaining things, and is extremely helpful in office hours. She is one of the best teachers at CU
Hendrickson was hands down one of the best teachers I've had at CU. I HATED Gen Chem, but she made it at least somewhat bearable. If you have to take Gen Chem, take it with her.
One of the greatest professors at CU! Be sure to take at least 1 class with her.
She is the best professor I had at CU Boulder so far. She is clear in her lectures. Her demos are awesome. Her tests are fair. Just put in the work and you will get an A in her class.
She's a really great teacher. Her exams I personally felt are made to trick you. I had outstanding grades in the course home works , recitations, and clicker questions. I felt i knew the material but when it came to the exams i felt we were being tricked. They were testing with questions made to trick you. Great Lady. Exams were made horribly.
Easily available by email and office hours. Her lectures aren't dry by any means and she knows what she's talking about. Always a plus when your teacher is also a nice person. :)
Best professor I've had at CU! Her explanations are crystal clear and she keeps the lectures interesting.
Best professor in the chemistry & biochemistry department. Her lectures are crystal clear, and incredibly helpful. She is very clear about the expectations of the class, and as long as you follow the expectations and work hard you can get an A.
Great class- lets be real , chemistry is tough. She outlines her lectures well though and provides many opportunities to get help. The homework assigned always correlates well with the tests and there are extra problems just in case you need further clarification. Always willing to help in office hourshelp room. Overall, great teacher!
After taking General Chemistry, she is the best professor I have come across thus far. She is very clear in her lectures and her test are definitely tough, but you learn a lot and hard work comes a long way. There are many resources at your disposable and for being a big class, you still learn a lot.
Took general chemistry with her. She is very helpful and nice. She is so patient and never got mad at all the questions throw at her. If you go ask for help and sit in the front row, you will definitely pass the class. Her exams are fair, she wants you to know the stuff. I would take another class with her again!!!
She is a kind teacher, but what really stands out about her is her amazing lecturing skills. She is extremely clear, material gets across very easily, and her tests are reasonable.
Very clear lectures. Clicker questions count but are curved at end. She's entertaining and pretty easy follow.
She's really good and has a great personality. very funny! I would recommend taking a class with her. I took gen chem 1 with her and I'm planning to take gen chem 2.
Dr Hendrickson is the best. The literal best. Honestly I hated chemistry, and I still hate it, but I love her. Dr Dukovich co-taught the class and I was literally counting down the days until Hendrickson came back.
Teaches chemistry very well! Would definitely recommend. Be ready to do clicker questions.
Susan is a really good instructor but don't expect her to cover all the material in depth. It is up to you to refer back to the textbook for difficult concepts and homeworks. Also, if you aim to get an A, you gotta through a lot of practice exams.
One of the best professors I've ever had! Dr. Hendrickson made lectures easy to attend and material easy to learn. 10/10 would take one of her classes again.
One of the best professors I've ever had! Dr. Hendrickson made lectures easy to attend and material easy to learn. 10/10 would take one of her classes again. Also had pretty cool demos, explained the math part of chem pretty well, and was super helpful at the helproom (which you should definitely take advantage of).
This is definitely a weed out class. My best advice to you is to get help from a TA WHENEVER you don't understand a homework problem . If you struggle at all on the homework, you're not prepared for the test.
Dr. Hendrickson is hands down the best professor I have ever had. Being in such a huge lecture hall, she recognizes that hand raises aren't common, and manages to anticipate our questions. Whenever a question on the topic came to my mind, it seemed like she would always answer it moments later. She's a wonderful lecturer!
She is by far the best GenChem teacher here at CU. She is organized, presents the material in understandable terms, and makes sure you get the concepts. She's also super passionate and nerdy, and always brings jokes into the classroom. Highly recommend her.
She will never make you feel like you don't belong in her classes. She makes lecture fun, and she has the best chemistry jokes you'll ever hear.
Very caring professor. She's a good person but loves to trick you on exams. It's a tough class and the professor being nice doesn't change it. In terms of teaching i thought i learned the most through lecture and i enjoyed her demos. I took 2 semesters with her. Best Gen Chem prof if you need to take it, take it with her.
Instructions for lab reports were cryptic and unclear on purpose. Tests were tricky on purpose. The help room is over crowded, different TAs give conflicting information, and the amount of effort put into the class is not earned back in the form of a good grade or in knowledge. Waste of time/$. Most frustrating endeavor in my young life.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. She makes learning chemistry understandable and easy to swallow. Very caring and wants all of her students to succeed. Her lectures are clear and concise, and makes sure you have all of the necessary tools to do well in the class! The content is definitely hard, but it's best to learn it from her.
She is an amazing professor! Her slides were clear and concise, and she teaches all the material that will show up on the test. She keeps class lively, and provides additional resources on D2L to help you succeed in her class. She's always willing to help you if you ask, and she is one of the nicest professors I have ever talked too. Take from her
Shes great! Interesting lectures and cool material that can be fun. However tests can be hard, I had never gotten under a B in a chemistry exam before and this course changed that. You will need to put some effort but it is ok because you will suffer happly because Hendrickson is hilarious.
One of the best professors I've had. She's here to help, she's clear & consice, and makes me laugh almost every day. So thankful I took chemistry from her (gen chem 1 & gen chem 2) she does an amazing job even though the class and is lightly terrible and very difficult... but she makes it better!
She is the best gen chem prof at CU. She is entertaining, easy to understand and has amazing lectures. The class is easy, just go to every lecture as participation counts, do practice exams and HW. The practice exams are past exams so they have similar problems. She is amazing and really cares about her students. If you can, take chem with her.
I think Dr. Hendrickson is a great teacher who puts a lot of effort into making her lectures informational and understandable. she is very accommodating. Her tests are tricky so make sure to read carefully. Textbook is not needed to do well in GenChem2, she posts extra practice problems online. Just make sure to study and you will do well in class
It's a chemistry course so it's not going to be easy. Wasn't the best professor I've taken but I think it was mainly my lack of interest in the material.
Dr. Hendrickson is the reason I felt good about most of the concepts in chemistry. She teaches them in a logical way and takes feedback from students to be able to teach future students more well . Tests are tricky but it you put the effort in and do the practice tests you should be fine.
Dr. H is a great teacher! Chem 1133 is a difficult class so be ready to show up to numerous office hours and do a lot of out of class studying.
She is very nice and makes an 8 AM not horrible. She is very helpful in help room so I often went when she was there. That being said her exams are very tricky. The averages for the exams were two C-'s and one had a D- average. There were times I had the right answer but changed it since the wording threw me off. She favors algebra over concepts.
She is a very nice professor and funny. She is always willing to help you if you are having trouble and replies to emails fast. No tests are dropped and no tests are curved (one of the averages for a midterm was 64%). However, she does curve the class at the end.
An ideal spokesperson for Chem induction. Has been a consummate professional. Responds to email promptly, flexible with scheduling, comes to recitation to answer questions!! Tests on what she teaches, clear explanation of concepts, illustrative lectures, really a pro at teaching, and dry, sharp humor. Sit up front and ask her questions at lecture!
Dr. Hendrickson is one of the best profs I've ever had. She is great at explaining hard concepts and her powerpoints are very clear and concise. She makes lectures fun and interesting with her dry humor and cool demonstrations. Do the practice tests and go into office hours and you'll be fine. I highly recommend taking CHEM with her.
Excellent lecturer, makes sitting in a lecture hall for an hour enjoyable. Equally as good during office hours.
She is AMAZING. She clearly explains concepts, is always willing to help, and is very fun. Lectures rarely seem to drag on and she makes chemistry fun. You will have to work, but the tests are fair and she could make them much harder. She is also really good about giving you all the materials you need to be prepared and succeed.
By far the best prof I've had so far. Chemistry does not come easy to me but she made it incredibly easy to learn with her easy-to-follow lectures and dry humor. She makes lectures entertaining and interactive with lots of clicker questions that count as participation points. Exams are pretty difficult and need to be heavily studied for.
Had her for Chem 1113. A really tough course, but she teaches it very well. put in the effort and you will succeed. a lot of effort
Dr H is by far my most favorite professor. I took her both semesters and I learned a bunch! Her lectures are great and she makes them very funny with her quirky jokes. Her tests are meant to trick you so watch out for that! She really cares about her students and will go above and beyond to make sure you will succeed. Such a sweet person in general
Dr. H has been my favorite professor at CU so far. However, her tests are the hardest tests I have ever taken thus far in my college career, but that is how gen chem 2 is at CU. I worked so hard in this class, but would overthink a lot of the exam questions. The exams are unfortunately a lot harder than the lectures. I LOVED Dr. H though
Her lectures are good and relate to the test. Not the best chemistry prof at CU, but not the worst either. Exams are difficult, and she does always try and trip you up. There are always at least 1 or 2 questions you have never seen before in class or on practice exams. If you can get a different prof with easier exams I would recommend it.
Great and caring professor!! But her exams were rough. As a high-achieving student, I was tricked by many questions and ended with my first B ever. Curved class 1% and finished less than 0.5% from the B+ cutoff. Sapling HW was tedious and wasn't a great study tool. Study all the practice exams inside and out. Study CONCEPTS along with calculations.
Dr. Hendrickson is so nice and caring, and genuinely entertaining. Gen Chem 1 is a difficult course, but she makes it bearable and is accomodating. As far as Chem professors go, would recommend
She was my professor for General Chem 1 and 2. Lectures are clear, Exam prep is extensive and optional (DO IT), Gives great answers to discussion board questions. Dr. Hendrickson is a very competent and caring professor. Chemistry is always challenging and her courses are no exception but she really wants you to learn!
This class was online due to the whole pandemic but the way that it was structured was helpful. Dr. Hendrickson is an amazing professor and is there to help you with what you need. She is my favorite chemistry professor! If you study you will do great in the exams.
Due to the whole pandemic, everything was online but the way class was structured was great. She is an amazing professor and is there to help you. She is my favorite chem professor. Just study hard and you will do fine.
Would not recommend taking this class online, I would say wait until we are in person again if possible. The class was not extremely hard, but you have to study for the exams!! expect to need to have a really good understanding of the concepts not just the math as the questions on the exam are never exactly the same as the practice exams.
Professor Hendrickson was very good at teaching concepts. I only watched the lectures, never read the textbook, and did fine. 40% of your grade is quizzes, final is 15%, and the rest is made up from online homeworks that only take about 1 hour a week to complete. Attendance wasn't mandatory, classes were on zoom, but the classes gave good review.
Comes to class with so much energy even if the class is online which always makes the class interesting and fun. She also does a really good job tying in chemistry topics to real world examples which help to solidify concepts. HW isn't too bad either.
Attending lectures is a huge waste of time. She doesn't teach to the level of the tests or homework and just reads her PowerPoint slides. She often spends over 15 minutes on a clicker question that nearly all students answered in the first 2 minutes. This is just wasted time that I feel could be better used actually teaching material.
Hendrickson is amazing!!! I love her for chem. She is engaging and very accessible outside of class. She cares about her students success. Definitely one of the best chemistry professors ive had.
There is no way she's 4.4/5. I got a 95% in the class stickly due to having taken AP chem in HS. Several times on hw she would tell us some questions wont be covered and wouldn't do anything about it and several questions on test were content not covered in class! The lectures are also very boring, out of my 250 person class about 80 came to class.
Dr. Hendrickson was very accommodating when things came up. Although the class and content were challenging, she is a decent person and and excellent teacher.
Dr. Hendrickson is a great professor. Her lectures are very clear and allows lots of time in class in order to answer clicker questions and her explanations are very helpful.
Professor Hendrickson is a really good teacher & made chem make sense and seem fun. If you put in the work and study for tests, it is fairly easy to get a high grade, plus the course has a good amount of extra credit and a curve at the end of the semester. 10/10 would recommend
I always hated chemistry and always struggled with it, but I love Professor Hendrickson. I think that the lectures may be a waste of time sometimes but she always came with a great attitude. If you go to the help rooms and office hours she is really helpful and wants you to succeed.
Let me start by saying the chemistry department at this school sucks. Dr. Hendrickson is very educated in chemistry and gives thoughtful lectures. She is very accommodating and helpful, she always offered a hand in the help room and understood her faults. However, the exams will test you on the heaviest problems and you need to prepare for that.
Dr. Hendrickson super kind person, and having a relationship with her is very helpful in getting help on difficult topics. The class is not to hard, exam 3 was the hardest for me but it wasn't to bad. Pay attention in the lecture the slides are very helpful and almost everything on the slides is on the test. DO THE TEST PREP and go to office hours.
dr. hendrickson was amazing. i had my lecture at 8am but i always came just because i truly enjoyed her lectures and teaching style. i feel like i greatly owe my success in her class and my later chemistry classes to her for being so passionate about teaching chemistry
Take Professor Hendrickson. The lectures she teaches are super helpful and easy to understand, and any questions you might have she can answer. Professor Hendrickson made my 8 AM lecture a great start to the morning. Do the homework, pay attention to the lectures, do the practice exams, and you will succeed in the class. Overall a great professor!
Dr Hendrickson is an AMAZING professor. Made my goals clear on the first day, sat in the front, and communicated when I needed help; she is SO kind and personable. She has a passion for chem which shows in lectures. The lectures are so engaging, and I barely missed one class as her lecture was such a wonderful start to my day (8 am).
I continuously had the worst interactions with Dr. Hendrickson to the point where I no longer showed up to class out of fear I would get belittled for asking clarifying questions since her slides are dated and convoluted. I taught myself this entire course, that's why I got an A. She is not a kind person, no way she is 4.4/5, ppl do NOT like her.
Dr. Hendrickson is passionate about her subject, puts a lot of effort into her lectures, and has great exam resources (I'd recommend using ALL of the practice problems/exams to study). Exams are weighted heavy with no curves and just a 2% extra credit opportunity that's completed throughout the semester.
Dr. Hendrickson is lovely and genuinely cares about the success of her students. Her lectures are very engaging and she makes a great effort to provide as many resources and opportunities, like review sessions, practice exams to review, etc., as possible to help you improve your grade.
Dr. Hendrickson was a great prof. One of those people you can tell has a genuine passion for their subject, which really helps to make lecture interesting even if you don't care about chemistry all that much. Attendance is key here.
Hendrickson is really solid at making a pretty complicated subject more manageable. Her lectures can feel a little unrepresentative of the homework but otherwise she's great. Also super helpful for office hours.
Hendrickson is an engaging professor who makes lectures fun. The content is challenging, but her clear explanations and availability for help make it manageable. unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the textbook.
Dr.Hendrickson's lectures were great and easy to follow. Definitely do all the homework, practice exams, and go to office hours for help. There is also a chance to get 2% extra credit throughout the semester which was a good way to practice more problems. The exams were tough though so just make sure to prepare a lot for them.
Great professor who cares a lot about her students.
She is a good professor
The exam were brutal but everything else was amazing
Worst professor I have ever had. Genuinely do NOT take her class under any circumstance.
Although I haven't done amazing in her class, she really helped chemistry "click" for me in ways that other chem classes have not. Despite having a HUGE lecture hall with so. many. students, she still seems invested in everyone's academic success.
I think Dr. Hendrickson is a good professor, but personally her teaching style did not click with me. I felt like she read off the slides a lot rather than actually teaching and going through each concept. It is understandable because the class is so huge. She really is not bad but be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the content.
She's a great lecturer, so it's worth showing up to class (even if it's at 8 am), do the extra credit (it will make or break your grade), your grade is heavily reliant on your midterm grades and the midterms AREN'T easy, so study and get a tutor, the homeworks can be long but you get a week to do them and can earn up to 90% credit for late work.
She was good at lecturing and getting a base understanding across but nowhere near enough to understand the midterms. Also, help rooms didn't help. Any time she was there, I felt ashamed and judged when I asked a question to her. Never came back again b/c it never helped me. If you have chem background, you'll be just fine.
She wasn't good at explaining any of the topics, and I taught the entire course to myself. She would always teach past the class time, and the lectures were very hard to follow. The tests are worth 65% of your grade, and they are very difficult.
Hendrickson is very passionate about chemistry but personally her teaching style wasn't for me. She doesn't do many practice problems and just reads off the slides. Exams are weighted very heavy, but 2% extra credit + a curve at the end of the semester helps. To succeed in this class you have to study a lot.
I wish I took chemistry with another professor. Her teaching style wasn't for me and she reads off of her slides. If it wasn't for the TAs in recitation I wouldn't have passed. She likes chemistry and is passionate about it.
I struggled in this class, so I went to her to ask for more help. Her response was "Do more, sorry" in essence. I study 15-20 hours for this class, do every extra credit, extra problem, practice and use every available resource, and she basically wrote me off for not trying hard enough. I'm having an AI software help me now which speaks volumes.
Took for gen chem 1 and 2. - About the class: Very difficult. Gives textbook definitions, which makes concepts hard to absorb. You will learn through example problems. - About Hendrickson: She's a nice person but is not a perfect professor. - My advice: Study every day. Get a tutor or study with friends. Do the extra credit. You'll need it.
Great professor, I loved that she made sure to test our knowledge with the iClickers and always spent enough time on the slides. You could tell she actually cares about her students and what she's teaching, which made me want to engage more. Definitely a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Tests make up a large portion of the grade and are very difficult, and the lecture does very little to prepare for this. Her clicker questions are pretty good, but the lectures are boring, and she reads directly off the slides.
Just reads off slides and the exams are lowk impossible. She's a very nice professor but you basically have to teach yourself everything. She does give extra credit opportunities, so do it cuz you'll need it :(. Stay away if you can.
Dr. Hendrickson is amazing. She guides the students through the slides really well and gives hints to help with the students understanding. She keeps lectures engaging by throwing in her sense of humor and makes sure to use clicker questions at the start of lecture to guide understanding of previous material. Would take any class with her!
I want to start out by saying that general chemistry is a difficult course. Out of all the professors I have had, Dr. Hendrickson seems to care the most about everyone's success in the class. Of course, the exams are difficult, but she provides the previous two years of Exams for practice, which are basically copy-paste, so you know what to expect.
I've taken both chem 1 and chem 2 with Dr. Hendrickson and got a A- then a B. I will say she is a very good professor and also DOES offer 2% EC plus iClicker makeups. The clicker questions are very helpful for exams though the exams are difficult.
chem 1 and 2 (i took both under professor hendrickson) are both very lecture heavy so you should be going to lecture, even if it's at 8 am. dont be afraid to go to office hours as shes very sweet and willing to help :) do the homework/practice problems/practice exams, read the txtbook, and lock in! it all comes back to how you apply yourself too
I genuinely would slime anyone out who speaks bad on Susan's name. The sweetest woman ever and gives all resources necessary to succeed.
She's an awful lecturer, reads verbatim from the slides. In class questions are extremely easy while homework and exams are harder. Exam averages are awful and significantly lower than other professors teaching the same class. Also she will take up time in lecture doing “experiments” and often messes up problems during review classes.
