Shes a tough teacher, but if you pay attention and give a little effort you can slide by with a decent grade.
She is very enthusiastic and kinda hot for an instructor.
She is very enthusiastic and nice, but doesn't take any crap. A great teacher who makes the course challenging, but not impossible.
She's very enthusiastic, down to earth, and knows her stuff. Her class is slightly challenging but with a little effort a good grade is certainly obtainable.

She really knows her subject and its not that hard to get an A if you really do enjoy birds.
the bird lady sucks. she has the most annoying voice ever, and stutters around for half of the class. she also is dyslexic which she tells us about every class. this has been the worst class i have taken.
Wow does she like birds. She's not bad, her class is an easy bio credit for a nonmajor. A couple hard assignments, but overall pretty easy class if you give half an effort.
Know the lecture notes, the test come straight from the notes. Go to lecture, it is the easiest way to get good info. I never did the reading because she explains things well in class.
She was really helpful. Go to class and take notes and you will get an A and can study the night before. Make sure your there for the movie days too. Class is very interesting if you like animals. She knows her sh*t too.
Yes, she's the bird lady, but she's GOOD. She's at the university to TEACH, and does research on the side. She knows good methods. Pay attention and study a few days before the test and you will do well. She cares that her students understand the material. Can be slightly intimidating in office hrs.
She might be obsessed with birds, but it's nice to have a prof who's passionate about her field for once. She is does everything possible to help you succeed: she has online office hours and review sessions in addition to normal office hours. The class is easy though; most, if not all, of the exam material comes from the lecture notes.
hated the clicker. her grading scale was way too harsh. she would get notes mixed up, hard to undertsand. things were on the test that were not in the notes.
nice lady, knows her stuff, easy multiple choice tests that come straight from the notes. she'll help solve probs that come from the test at her review sessions
I like this professor. she always made herself readily available to anyone who needed help. the only bad thing about her is that she always teaches from exactly bell to bell
Dr. Hengeveld is one of the best professors that I have had at IU. She goes out of her way to help students and make sure they truly understand. Her tests are extemely fair and cover the most basic concepts at an appropriate level. Take her class!!
dr. hengeveld is helpful. use the course packet. though it's not always in order and sometimes is a little confusing, it's really helpful when studying for the tests. take a lot of notes in her class.
She could make the class a little more interesting than just going through slides the whole time but the course packet is really helpful for tests. The online practice exams are VERY good study guides for tests. Enjoyed going to the discussion groups for this class.
One could understand every term and concept in the lectures but still do poorly on the exams because the wording on her exams is EXTREMELY poor. Overall, it is a very frustrating class because she make simple information very complicated because of the way it is asked. I would recommend choosing another professor for L111.
good teacher get the course packet it helps. go to class, it also helps. The best bio teacher for sure at IU for L11!
LOT of material.. lot of study time, but it's very possible to get good grades... take practice quizzes on line to get used to her wording on exams. she has a ton of pre exam help so use it to your advantage and read the material. then you'll do fine
It's a lot of material to cover, but she puts forth a great effort to help students. If you go to class and take the practice quizzes online you'll manage to get a good grade in her class.
Not a difficult class by any means. Plenty of office hours/help available. Do practice quizzes and go to a few office hours and it's a guaranteed A.
Easily the most helpful professor i have had in college, i would often see her two to three hours after class had ended helping a single student, she wants you to succeed and will do anything she can to help you.
You have to go to most of the classes and maybe skim over the reading but she goes over everything in detail and gives A LOT of extra credit!
Great professor, very helpful. She will spend plenty of time outside of class to help her students.
Great Professor. Very helpful. Straightforward tests. Just go to all discussions and do practice tests and you shall be golden.
She's very helpful outside of class and makes a lot of extra time for students. Doing practice quizzes online helps greatly for the tests, which cover the most essential material. Unfortunately, attendance is mandatory and lecture was dimly lit and pretty boring.
Helpful and passionate about biology. Boring lecture, but pay attention to the practice questions, some end up on tests.
She gave great lectures and her slides were not only appealing but they were all you needed to know for the tests, and her class pack guarantees success.
She rushes through notes and is kind of hard to follow sometimes, but the material is typically pretty straight forward. The discussion groups help explain what she doesn't. You have to go to every class though because she takes attendance; and the tests are relatively hard. You have to put in effort for this class, but it is not impossible.
Students complained about the speed she went through the notes, but she gives you all of her lecture notes and you fill in the blanks and it's a lot of material but we never went too in depth. If you just listen in lectures and study the notes and use the quizette questions that she posts before tests then you should do well.
She is very helpful and makes lectures pretty interesting. Go to her office hours before each test and clarify what will be on it because they are pretty tough. I got an A in the class and got B's on all my exams so don't worry too much. Lots of extra credit! I recommend her!
She makes decent slides, but you really need to read the book to get a better picture of some of the concepts she brings up. Exam material is more complicated than I thought would be appropriate for an intro level biology class.
Hengeveld is great. She is an interesting lecturer and the tests are reasonable. This is about as easy a science course as you will take at IU.
Not the best teacher. She relates everything to birds and makes you want to fall asleep in class. Feel like the course packet provided doesn't even help.
Useless class, useless teacher. No applicable use in the real world unless your studying animals. The class says evolution, yet we spend class time ID-ing animals instead of learning of physiological changes of animals over time. I'm dissapointed in myself for taking this class. This teacher can't teach this topic and should stick to ornithology.
She give you the notes in the course packet (BUY IT!)and she explains things with pretty good examples. She kind of gets snappy and doesn't respect students, but she offers a lot of bonus. Overall, the material is straightforward and simple if you have had Bio classes in the past. Good luck!
Pretty clear and passionate about subject but not very nice.
The class was moderately difficult. Hengeveld was alright, but she frequently described concepts using OTHER biological terms somebody with no previous experience wouldn't know. I learned a lot, but she was a little condescending, and a little too into birds.
She complicates the content, even simple concepts, and misspeaks often during lectures leading to more confusion. On top of that she is disrespectful towards her students and seems constantly irritated by the slightest issues. I highly recommend a different professor if you really want to take this course.
Prof. Hengeveld is rather enthusiastic, intelligent, and knows what she's talking about. She gives you all the help you could ever ask for with study guides, practice quizzes, and office hours as well as review sessions. Had a 101.6 in class before final. Work hard (or not even THAT hard:)), you will succeed!
She is honestly one of the rudest people I have ever met. She makes easy material very complicated, and she imposes her views on others. She constantly complained about our class size (as if it were our fault). She also is obsessed with birds and basically related everything to birds, and I got nothing out of the class.
Professor Hengeveld is very intelligent. That being said, she doesn't always present the material very well, and the discussion groups tend to confuse you more than help. She can be very abrasive at times, and she talks about birds often. Not a hard class, but not easy either. Overall, not a bad professor.
Expects SO much for her Bird class. She's told us her expectations of us are way too high but "too bad"! Ridiculous assignments and order quizzes, which really took ~1 hour and she even said are more like exams. She is harsh and judgmental. Read every day, study notes, spend lots of time on hw, and WEAR AS MANY LAYERS as possible on field trips!!
This class is VERY hard. She clearly states that this class is "demanding" and that it requires a lot of work. The quizzes are like exams. She gives us only 30 minutes to complete it, when it takes about an hour. She expects us to know everything about birds. It also does not help that we have the two hardest AI's in the Bio department.
This class is VERY demanding. Requires more of students than any other professor I have had. there is a ridiculous amount of work for this class! Expects us to be great at IDing birds within the 1st week! Her quizzes are very time constraint and 5 pages long. She and the AIs are VERY hard graders! Her exams take > 1 hr 15 min. Rude and unclear!
She is rude, judgmental, and a VERY harsh grader. She doesn't respect students, has absolutely RIDICULOUS demands for the class, and requires to spend ~10 hours on a 20 point assignment. Her quizzes take way longer than 30 minutes, her exams are made of 5 essays + short answer + others. Very difficult class, rude, not helpful, difficult teacher.
She assumes everyone knows what she is talking about even though its a beginners class & if you are like me and haven't taken taken Biology since fresh year of HS it SUCKS! Makes you feel like an idiot if you ask questions.
Prof. Hengeveld has high expectations but is very clear on what she wants. She also gives a lot of bonus, which helps make up for harder assignments. She gives guides for the tests and if you complete them you'll be ok. The field trips are also really fun. I would recommend this class to anyone who needs an upper level lab/lecture.
This course is time and labor intensive, but Professor Hengeveld is fair, and her expectations are clearly stated. Regularly available for questions/reviews- all you have to do is ask. Taxonomy quizzes, two long homeworks, two short homeworks, 4 field trips, and 3 essay exams. Highly recommend class and professor.
I love love love her. She is a great professor and awesome person. Her class is REALLY hard though but you WILL learn and it's great. Be prepared to work your butt off.
Dr. Hengeveld's class is easy if you work hard and pay attention. She is always willing to meet outside of class to go over material, and rewards students for doing so. The labs are boring, but easy, and they really help your grade. She's incredibly enthusiastic about the material.
I love going to this class because i get to make up 75 minutes of sleep i missed from all the reading she assigns for us. We go through a chapter a day and she goes through each slide in a matter of seconds. She is boring, she doesn't engage her students at all and doesn't make it interesting at all. I would 100% recommend taking someone else!!
Hengeveld's class is my least favorite class, and I am a biology major. She is sassy and rude to students. She has very strange wording for the questions on her test, but according to her, "you just have to get used to her style of question." I love biology and took AP Bio in high school, but if I didn't, this class would have ruined my life.
One of the rudest professors I've had. Is enthusiastic about the topics itself, but not about the students at all. Acts as if teaching and interacting with students is the equivalent of pulling teeth. She took an intro course way too seriously.
Her lectures are sometimes confusing since she uses biology terms to define other biology terms. She also talks way too quickly during lecture. Quizzes are easy as long as you do the sample questions she puts online. Tests are hard because the questions are worded in the worst possible way.
She's kind of sarcastic and condescending in her explanations. Makes you feel stupid a lot. Her tests are way too long even with 75 minutes to take them. You have to do some reading comprehension to even understand what the question is asking. I would pick another professor to take for this class.
She talks very quickly, so don't forget your slides. It's near impossible to keep up with paper and pencil. She has a major soft spot for birds so most of the examples involve them. The tests are very wordy and I often felt like they were trick questions. It's important to read what's listed in the syllabus, before class!
Lectures were boring and unclear. She was more interested in telling stories about her birding trips than in teaching you about biology.
Professor Hengeveld is a rude person towards her students. She talks way too fast and uses other biology vocabulary, that a intro student wouldn't understand, to describe what she is teaching. Her tests are ridiculously hard and and the questions are strangely worded. Would recommend a different professor.
She has a really confusing way of phrasing everything. Also she ends nearly every sentence with "okay" which can start to drive you up the wall whenever you're already feeling frustrated and bored.
Her tests are challenging but they aren't unfair. If you pay attention in class and actually do the work that she asks, which isn't a lot, you should have nothing to worry about. She does a great job of structuring the course and she's a cool person to talk to outside of the classroom as well.
Her exams are worded a little weird which makes you miss a few questions on the exam if you dont really read the questions. she loves birds, so expect examples in lectures to be based on it. kinda hard to listen to but powerpoints are easy to follow. you wont hate yourself if you take her class
I eventually developed a soft spot for this prof & the class. The material can be very tough, and she is not a great lecturer (stumbles on words & misspeaks a lot, causing explanations to be choppy & confusing.) I FREQUENTLY went to office hours which helped CONSIDERABLY. She's very warm & helpful if you show effort. Really great woman.
Unless you were offered this class in high school and understand it well, I would advise you to run from Professor Susan Hengeveld!
She is a really great professor, the material just isn't interesting to me which made it a little more difficult. She is very serious and not very fun so lectures drag. Some tests were better than others. She offers tons of extra credit if you go to class. Make sure you have a clicker because we used it everyday. Use the study guides she posts!
Take her birds class. She does an amazing job of teaching this course and she makes it a healthy challenge for you to learn. It's not an easy class but it's definitely worth it and she makes it clear what she expects from you.
If you don't have any interest in birds then this class is not for you. Tests are graded a lot harder than they needed to be and she expects you to know every little detail. There's a lot of outside work to put into it and on homework you can get the correct answer but still get half credit if you don't explain yourself they way she wants you to.
I really liked her a lot! I took L112 as an intensive summer (6 weeks) course and it was hard! And her tests are difficult, but she clearly tells you what's going to be on them and gives you a ton of (optional) practice beforehand so if you are willing to put in the work it pays off! Her lectures are really straightforward.
Don't take the summer version of this course. If you fall behind in material in this course you should drop it immediately
Susan Hengeveld is one of the most straightforward, caring professors at IU. She tells you exactly what is expected of you, there are no tricks. If you do what she says and study, you'll pass with flying colors. She is the epitome of a good professor.
Goes through tons of notes during lecture way too fast. You can either get the notes down or actually listen to what she's saying, not both. Test questions are terribly worded and have multiple correct answers, requiring you to pick the 'best one', which may be subjective. I would find another prof.
Her tests have multiple correct answers which requires you to choose the best answer, but if you study and know the material you will do great. She is very caring and is willing to help if you are struggling.
She reads off the lecture slides a lot but also gives her own input because she knows her info and what she's doing. AI's grade the written quizzes, which is nice. Quizzes are short answer, tests are multiple choice. She recommends you read the book, but I don't read and I've done well. Go to office hours before quizzes and tests, she gives hints.
I LOVED her. She knows her stuff. She elaborates on nearly everything she says to help you understand. She has an INSANE amount of office hours and usually does extra ones the night before an exam. She is so caring and sweet, but stern enough to make you want to do well.
Dr. Hengeveld is a wonderful woman. She's very kind and was more than willing to help outside and inside of her office hours. If you take her class in the fall, she may be less available because of her bird research, but I found the class easy to pass without having to meet with her. She picks great TAs and her lectures are extremely relevant.
Shes a great professor that really knows her stuff. However, she can very easily come off as cold, distant, and sometimes plain rude. She also tends to yell quite a bit. If you want to take this class, you better be willing to put in a lot of effort. Its not exactly an easy A. But its a cool class with a knowledgeable professor.
She was a FANTASTIC professor. SO knowledgeable, experienced and passionate. The best class I've taken in university.
She reads from lectures. She gives information heavy quizzes and not enough time to complete them. She expects you to know every little detail about everything. She lectures til the very last minute of class and gets mad if you pack up even with a minute before class is supposed to end. I would find another teacher.
She's passionate about her work and it shows in her lectures. She gives many practice opportunities in class/discussion section so that you can fully master the content. She can be unorganized in her teaching. Read the textbook, go to class, do your homework and you won't have to study that much.
Dr. Hengeveld is a very tough professor, but she is very knowledgeable when it comes to her field of expertise (biology) and her field of study (ornithology). Make sure you attend class and take your time on Mastering assignments and discussion activities because they often reappear on the tests and quizzes.
Professor Hengeveld is a difficult professor. I find myself struggling a lot in her class because she gives long lectures however, she flies through them at such a rapid pace that it is difficult to get all the info down and listen/understand while typing/writing notes down simultaneously. Her attitude reminds me of blue jays.
the ONLY good thing about her is how easily accessible she is and her grading scale. She drops the lowest of everything. But she's extremely rude. Honestly, you can probably learn more reading the book, watching videos or going to TA's office hours. Her lectures are literally her reading from the slides, which you can do on your own. Beware
Worst prof I have had so far. She is unbelievably rude and treats you like you're dumb. If your answer on a quiz/exam is not exactly what she said in class, then you will get it wrong or maybe receive partial credit if you're lucky. I have tried reading the book and studying for hours but nothing helps me. And her study guides are awful. Horrible.
Attendance is key, *especially* at discussion group. Those one-point Top Hat assignments stack up quickly. Not much wiggle room with Dr. Hengeveld. She's pretty no-nonsense and doesn't take BS excuses.
Tips: Do the reading and take notes. Before tests, reread notes and underline the most important things. Attend every lecture. Mastering bio wasn't very helpful; you can use quizlets to check answers before submitting. PACE YOURSELF; quizzes require detailed answers and test questions are usually full paragraphs to read; don't run out of time.
Dr. Hengeveld is VERY knowledgable on biology. Demanding class - tests require a lot of studying to get a good grade, attendance is important (she talks though powerpoint slides), grades hard and very specifically. Not a terrible professor - just requires a lot work and time with studying. Supposed to read textbook but don't necessarily HAVE TO.
Very helpful professor gives extra credit and assignments other than tests to boost grade. This is a challenging course so you will need to study but she gives study guides so I never even used the textbook. She also drops your lowest quiz and lets you drop a test if you do better on the final than your lowest test score. Overall recommend
Hengeveld is the best choice for BIOL-L111. Her tests contain some lengthy and confusing questions. You can drop a quiz and can replace lowest test grade with final exam grade. Some complain about her and her teaching style but she is very fair and straightforward with what is expected. Gives extra credit for good attendance
Dr. Hengeveld is brilliant, however her lectures move very quickly and can be hard to follow. The tests are novels and on top of being difficult, they take every bit of the allotted time to finish. She does drop lowest scores and the activities done in discussion help understand the material a lot, but overall the course was unenjoyable.
She was very passionate about her work and she made me more excited to pursue animal behavior. She was stern at a times which is just part of her personality. However, you get extra credit for attendance, you can drop an exam and replace it with your final grade, and one quiz is dropped so there are a lot of opportunities to raise your grade.
Horrible. Treats students like they're stupid. Extremely cocky, told us to not even fill out the course evals because she thinks IU loves her too much to get rid of her. Definitely don't recommend taking this class with her. (BIOL-111)
God, she's literally the worst professor I've ever had. She's extremely cocky and flies through lecture slides. Please do yourself a favor and not take this class with her.
While some people may see she is tough and course, I find her endearing and open-minded. She puts everything you need to know plus some in accessible places and wants you to pass. She offers help frequently and is always willing to answer any silly questions myself or others may have.
She teaches in a very specific way. Its very black and white with not a lot of grey area, which is how I like being taught. Shes known for tough questions on her test but if you are prepared you should have no issues. Dont feel scared to ask questions, she loves answering them.
Dr. Hengeveld takes attendance in a 250 person lecture, and gets extremely upset when you go to leave even a minute early. She on multiple occasions came into the next class with a lecture about our 'behavior'. Her lectures are just fill in the blank ppts, and the exams are unnecessarily hard. I took this course after HL bio courses, and struggled
I genuinely enjoyed this class. The field trips are early, but I had more fun than I thought I would. The exams are very long but doable. Be prepared to memorize a decent amount of taxonomy. Overall, Susan is great. She can be a tough grader but she gives you plenty of opportunities to ask questions and she's very easy to approach. Awesome class!
Dr. Hengeveld is a decent professor, just not the best at explaining things. The class itself isn't too difficult, and she gives plenty of room to get good grades. She dropped our lowest quiz, test, and 2 lowest assignments. Just show up and pay attention and you'll be fine.
Really great professor, it was a fun class to take but you have to be ready to put in some work. I found that meeting with her in office hours really saved me, she really takes time to make sure you understand as long as you put forth the effort. I would highly recommend her!
Dr. Hengeveld was an incredibly rude and off-putting professor. She blamed any and all technological problems on her students even after UITS had said that the issues were her fault. In addition she was not clear at all about what expectations for the course were. I have never seen a professor care so little about their students and be so mean.
Dr. Hengeveld was very accesible outside of class and her office hours helped a lot. I liked that we had in person discussions so I could get more help if needed. To pass this class I had to read and take notes from the online book, and I had to fill out every study guide available because biology does not come easy to me. Needless to say, I passed
I had to take her class online but I felt like she was super accomodating and the class was not bad at all. She gives you everything you need to know and as long as you take the practice quizzes and review the study guides she gives you for practice, you should be fine. Lectures weren't mandatory but the review lectures were extremely helpful!
Susan is a teacher who has very high expectations, and the result is that you truly know where you stand with the information. If you slack, you won't pass. This class was so much fun! This is her favorite class to teach and it shows. She's stern and her tests are hard to motivate you to learn the material, but she always gives extra credit.
She gave us a final exam with five essay questions, in addition to a short answer portion that was taken later, that made it hard for me to study for any of my other exams. I liked the portion of the class before, but her exams are unnecessarily stressful in a way that actively keeps me from learning.
She's a really great professor. Have to attend lecture to learn/understand material. Field trips/labs are fun. She's a tough grader and exams are lengthy with short answer question and take home essays. You HAVE to study and do the weekly study guides and does require some memorization for quizzes.
Not very patient with students and was often rude. Lectures were boring but she is very knowledgable about the info taught. Willing to help outside of class, but was intimidating and unapproachable. Grading was often inconsistent and difficult. For L112, she offered lots of extra credit opportunities for attendance. Exams were open note online.
Hengeveld's lectures were boring, sub-optimal, and often uncompleted. Too much information is packed into this course to gain a solid enough understanding of each concept. This is compensated for with fully-online exams, which allow you to reference notes and textbook. Overall, a subpar experience as a learner but being successful was realistic.
