She is so weird and the lectures make me want to die.
The class is pretty boring, but she gives TONS of extra credit that is super easy to get. You dont need to go to lecture but it does help a little bit (may give you 1 or 2 exam questions the textbook does not). If you read and outline every chapter and study you'll get an A . She is a very nice person and means well.
Don't fall behind on readings and go to lecture to solidify concepts. Lab is 50% of your grade so make sure that you get a relatively easier one. If you get an A in the class you are exempt from finals so don't slack off.
Lab is 50%. TA MATTERS. Lecture is interesting and Herrick is a nice lady with nicer memes. If you need help she is willing to meet up with you. The exams aren't easy but it is possible to do well. Many questions are recycled quiz questions. She wants you to do well and gives a lot of extra credit so do it!
As a gen ed, Bio 1108 will require a decent amount of work. I highly recommend reading and outlining the textbook. Lecture is supplementary to the textbook, but Dr. Herrick does a really good job of highlighting the main topics that will appear on the exams. Make sure you attend lab because its a good chunk of the final grade.
I did not buy the textbook or go to lecture and I did just fine. If you get an A, you don't have to take the final. Lab practicals count as much as a test grade so take them seriously. Exams are hard and poorly worded, but not impossible to get a good grade.
She was an amazing teacher for a class that I was not at all excited to take. I was in love with the material by the end of the semester. This class is really easy and the averages are sometimes in the B range. She gives a lot of extra credit and that is the only way to get an A. Her exams are clear and there are no surprises. However lab is hard.
Everyone acts like she's a really difficult professor, but as long as you do the reading and look through the powerpoints you should be fine. Extra credit will realllllly help your grade, she wants everyone to do well and while her exams can be difficult there is new extra credit every unit. Plus she makes herself very available.
Compared to 1107, this class is not bad. Lectures seemed pretty useless as she goes on tangents and says 'you should read more about this in the book." Tests are worded oddly but fairly straight forward. Labs are pretty boring but easy to do well. If you get an A in the class you are exempt from the final.
Very helpful slides, always posted online and lots of extra credit opportunities
I'm a verbal learner and her class was perfect for that. I found myself not having to read the book or just skimming it as a refresher or for clarification. she does go on a lot of tangents but all are related to the topic and makes class entertaining. she is also very understanding and will work with you to get a good grade.
She is rude and moody sometimes and gets distracted from lecture easily which makes paying attention to what she is teaching kinda hard sometimes. She strays from what is being taught and has a rude and disrespectful demeanor towards students.
Herrick is the least knowledgeable prof ever and she really dislikes freshmen. The extra credit was fun to do and easy.
Don't take this class, this professor is very tough on exams.
3 exams in the semester but if you studied/went to lecture were not hard. Lab is mandatory and depending on the TA, quizzes may be difficult but the labs themselves were easy. Get an A and the final is not required.
If you get an A you dont have to do the final so do all of the extra credit she allows. Go to lecture as she has lecture specific questions on exams that you wont get otherwise. Shell call out rude, disruptive people which is great as it allows others to focus. Lab is easy as long as you study. In all good class, much easier than 1107.
Make sure to do the extra credit assignments and bonus quizzes! Lecture exams are tough, make sure to compensate with lab work. Both lecture and lab are equivalent (50% each). Take the time to read and understand concepts as lecture exams are conceptual. Overall, much easier than Bio 1107 (especially the honors version). Get the A, and no final!!!!
BIOL 1107 was MUCH worse than this class in terms of tests as well as the lack of extra credit (you get a lot in this class, I tell you) and although some say otherwise, Dr. Herrick is nice; she just calls you out if you are distracting or rude, which helps those who ACTUALLY care concentrate. Tests can be challenging, so look at the textbook+PPT!
Dr. Herrick is really sweet and caring. I liked that she has a no b.s. attitude and will do everything to help her students. She keeps it to the point and fun, I would definitely recommend taking her online class- this year's was a pilot and I loved it. Wasn't too hard, was straightforward, and the powerpoints she voiceovers are often really funny.
Prof Herrick does care about her students, even though she does not curve. She offers around 35 extra credit points to her student in hopes that they will get a good grade after her tests. My only problem is her lectures are not very helpful, you are better off reading the textbook. DO THE QUIZZES, MOST QUESTIONS REPEAT AND WILL BE ON THE TESTS!
Convincing myself to attend lecture felt like a struggle every week. The multiple extra credit opportunities help a lot though. Felt like I learned more in lab than I did lecture.
This class has somewhat difficult tests and lab work, however there is plenty of extra credit that will save your grade. Make sure to take advantage of the many extra credit opportunities because they are very helpful to do well in the class. Dr. Herrick is clearly passionate about the subject and her lectures were very interesting.
Dr. Herrick gives amazing lectures. You can tell how passionate she is (especially about the conservation aspect of things) and she knows her stuff. My one complaint is that she usually takes a few days to upload the lectures onto blackboard and didn't really communicate with the TA. There was extra credit if you actually went to class.
Susan gives so much extra credit; please utilize these opportunities. I raised my lecture grade from a C+ to an A with her extra credit. I found lab to be much more difficult than lecture. Study for lab quizzes and go to office hours; they add up and will help you in the end. Please read the textbook as it is more helpful than her lectures.
The lectures aren't necessary. The majority of the exam questions comes from her slides, so just study those. Extra credit makes it so easy to do well in course, if taken advantage. Didn't even have to take the final because I got an A in the course.
Lectures are very boring and don't really offer much more than the posted slides do. No need to read the book unless you don't understand the slides. Take advantage of extra credit opportunities as it brought my grade up at least one whole letter grade. Did not have to take the final because I finished with an A. Chapter question end up on exam!
Dr. Herrick gives amazing lectures with interesting videos interspersed throughout them and fun anecdotes about the material that are hard to forget. The exams are all multiple choice and the lab sections are pretty easy. As long as you care a bit, you will do well in this class.
Lectures are supplemental, Read the slides and textbook and youll be fine. Post extra "sample questions" that usually appear on the test. Lab quizzes are hard but if you study you will do fine. Extra credit available during semester that is worth a good amount. Cares about well being of students and is open to helping you.
Worry about lab not lecture. After the first exam I realized that the lectures weren't necessary at all. If you are comfortable learning material on your own I recommend it; she posts everything on huskyct, including the videos she shows in lecture. You can also get 10+ points extra credit. Study practice questions - often make up half of exams.
Do the extra credit!! All of it. No matter how dumb it seems. And pay attention to lecture, not so much the textbook. I didnt really like this class because, combined with the lab, it was literally impossible to memorize everything you needed to know. Susan is one of those professors that doesnt care if you have other classes too. Never again.
VERY difficult for an intro course... Write down what she says in class, not just whats on the slides. Had to read the book to fully understand everything. There's extra credit (actually do it!!) and a lot of practice questions/review material.
Not that difficult compared to Biology 1107. Labs are super easy but can get boring. Study, work hard, and do ALL of the extra credit! Loved Dr. Herrick, she gives some helpful studying tips and really wants you to succeed!
Loved her as a professor! Super nice and understanding of mistakes made! Her office hours were super good! Always do the extra credit!! It boosts your grade a lot! Lab is interesting but make sure to put in the work studying and reviewing! Tests were pretty straightforward and well formatted! Office hours are a must!
Responds to emails and is super helpful. Always available for office hours and will take her time to ensure you understand the material. Very kind and inspirational person who is passionate about her studies. The class was also very interesting and although most students skipped class because she poster her lectures, they were worth attending.
Professor Herrick is a really caring professor. She presents the material in a very clear and entertaining way. The exams are based mostly on lecture slides, the online Learning Curves, and practice chapter questions. She offers a lot of help to her students.
If you are good at memorizing things, you will pass this class. all memorization and super easy if you put in the effort during exam week, start studying a few days before the exam and take it chapter by chapter, youll get above a 90 easily
As long as you read the summaries of each chapter and do the practice quizzes then you will do great. Lab is the only hard part that could drop your grade
Do as much extra credit as possible bc if you get a 93 or above in lab and lecture separately you are exempt from the final. There are online reading questions and hw quizzes for each chapter in the ebook so read before doing those. I stopped going to class because if you go through the reading and understand it exams are easy. Review vocab too.
HW quizzes were tedious to do and way harder than the exams. Make sure to do all the bonus assignments and the practice quizzes. Lab and lecture were each 50%. Get an A in both lab and lecture to not have to take the final! She posts the powerpoint slides but its easier to remember and understand if you go the lecture!
I took this course fall 2019 and loved it. The Dr. Herrick is very intelligent and passionate about the subject. The material can be challenging but if you study and go to lecture/ask questions it is manageable. There is some extra credit towards the end DO IT. Helps a lot. 10/10 would recommend.
I loved her, the lecturing can get long and boring but I absolutely loved her as a professor! She cares about helping you succeed and does the best she can in such a large class.
Herrick probably won't be the most inspiring lecturer, and I know a few who passed without going to lecture. The hw is from an online textbook, and is annoying but it at least pads your grade. She offers lots of extra credit and is very helpful if you need it. If you have an A in lecture and lab you can skip the final. Better than 1107 definitely.
Dr. Herrick's lectures are not the most interesting, but as a person she is really nice and cares for her students. Do the practice questions she gives because they make up half of her exams. She offers a lot of extra credit. Lecture is not worth going to because she posts her slides. Homework is a bit annoying but boosts your grade a lot.
She's definitely not a nice person, she's super snappy and rude in emails and announcements. Lucky for her she's got a nice set of TAs that are really knowledgable and respectable unlike her...I'm ending with an A but really wish she was just more pleasant. Exams are hard but if you keep up throughout semester you'll be fine.
Herrick is condescending, defensive, unfair and unapproachable. On multiple occasions she has been know to send rude emails. She is not the understanding type AT ALL. She is very disrespectful and her lectures barely help with her exams. She is also convinced that our generation is the worst so get ready to hear her rants about technology. Goodluck
She was so unfair, unapproachable, and very blunt. Since classes have moved online, many professors have been very considerate, but she has been very difficult. She assigned a web monitor during the exams and was strict, but didn't explain the rules. The extra credit assignments were weird and difficult to accomplish during this pandemic.
Many things on the test are not discussed in class, let alone touched upon. Has been very strict with exams during outbreak. Everything moved online, everything became tough. During in-person session, she always bad-talked technology, made it seem like she hated us. Very unapproachable. Grading was very strict.
Only good thing I can say is that she offered a lot of extra credit, but that's it. Definitely unapporachable and like everyone else said since the move to online classes she actually made the class more unbearable. Not supportive or understanding whatsoever. It's sad when a professor could really care less even during tough times like these.
Definitely easier than Bio1107, but the professor isn't the nicest. She was not accommodating during this pandemic. Lectures aren't really helpful, but her slides are useful for studying. Read the book, do the practice quizzes and take it chapter by chapter to do well on the exams. Lab is tedious, but not hard. Lots of extra credit available
Lots of extra credit. Besides that, Herrick was very condescending and hard to speak to as she came across rude and sassy. And trust me, its as bad in person as it is via email. I stopped going to lecture after the first 6 lectures because she wasted too much time on "How to study". Read the text book and do practice quizzes and you'll do great.
She gives a lot of extra credit. Lectures are long and boring and useless. She also does not allow technology in class. So much useless hw which is just busy work. Very passive aggressive. Not understanding at all in terms of the pandemic. On top of everything else, she missed the deadline to upload grades. Easy A but man this class sucked.
She is very strict and only offers three exams. If you are a prehealth major you will find her class so boring and super annoying. The homework quizzes are really hard, but there are ways to get extra credit, even though they are outlandish. I really didn't like this course so maybe I am biased, but i really did not enjoy her lectures or content
I just wanted to get on here and say that ever since remote learning came into effect, everything went downhill. Lab was just a pain frankly. All I can advise is to please understand everything deeply in order to do well on those practicals. Lecture was quite fair. Professor was not. End of story.
Very strict professor, won't take any excuses. DO ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT, it adds up in the end!!! For exams know/understand everything on her slides mainly, also do her practice quizzes for each chapter (she posts answer guides), you'll see a bunch of those questions on the actual exams. Make sure you do well on the lab practicals!
Dr. Herrick is a great prof! Many say the class is boring, but if you pay attention you will like it! Exams are very heavy on lecture material so review her powerpoints and REVIEW HER PRACTICE QUIZZES FOR EACH SECTION! Herrick was super kind outside of class, she opened a lot of doors for me to continue in ecology. Great class, great professor!
Nice and well respected professor, however I found the exams pretty hard. I would study and understand the material but still wouldn't do to well on the exams. Lab was fun at times but you actually have to study for the quizzes if you want to do well in the course. Lecture/Lab, 50/50.
Susan Herrick has been the worst professor I have had since the pandemic began. She is so passive aggressive, rude to students, and not accommodating whatsoever. Questions on exams are unfair and not thought out (for example people have lab the day after exams are scheduled but the material in lab that week will still be on the exam. Worst profesor
Way too much work
Herrick is one of many things. Funny at times, yes, an understanding teacher, not so much. She's been problematic with online learning, especially to those who need certain accommodations. Don't even get me started on the curriculum. We start at ch. 20, move to ch. 30, then back to 24, and then 26, 25, 31, you get the point. In con. would not rec
She is not a bad professor if you put in the work. You DEFINITELY have to do the readings and not leave it to the last minute. I made sure to give myself 2 days of pure study time for this class. She lets you drop ONE test grade, lab, pre-lab, and homework assignment from each category. Just read the textbook and go over the LABS for the test.
Very Passive aggressive and rude to students in class and emails. Assigned way too many assignments during the week. Exams are hard even if you study. Isnt very accommodating in the pandemic. Would not recommend
Dr. Herrick is impossible to contact outside of class, gives excessive amounts of homework, condescending to people when they ask questions, and just rude. I feel like she doesn't care about her students at all. This class was horribly adapted for online. You can get a good grade, but beware as it has a very heavy workload.
She is really funny and light-hearted, but definitely had unrealistic expectations for this class during COVID. She takes 2000 level material and makes you feel like you are in a graduate level course. The quizzes/exams are mostly open-ended and they are tough & need a lot of time. Appears to have no sympathy for the class average being a 56 either
Tests every over week. She'll add topics from other tests and info from labs so be prepared. Just focus on the labs and do the Launchpads and your grade will be fine.
Overall this class is not bad, the material is just super boring unless you like plants and evolution. Studying for exams is kind of tough because you never know how specific the questions are going to be. Also, the 2-4 homework assignments per week are kind of annoying. Do the Launchpad assignments and watch the lecture videos you'll be fine.
I would not recommend this professor AT ALL. Her class isn't hard but she is one of the rudest, unsympathetic professors I've ever had. She answers every question with either a laugh, a sarcastic response, or an attitude. She makes you feel like you should ask no questions at all. The class is easy to get an A in. But the professor is horrible.
Herrick is one of worst I've had at UConn. NOT understanding whatsoever, especially in terms of pandemic. Impossible to contact. I sent so many emails and not one returned. And puts things on exams from past labs that don't line up what was covered in lecture videos ... unpredictable exams. If you put in the work, u can do fine but Susan is not it
she makes a whole email address dedicated for students, yet myself & every single student I've talked to has never heard back once from her on email. horrible during pandemic. doesn't round grade for 79.9 to 80. exams have material not even from lecture .
Dr. Herrick is super passionate about what she teaches. The exams are not horrible, as long as you know her slides you'll do well on the test. Definitely read the textbook before lecture, it helps.
Prof Herrick was really understanding and accommodating. The final was optional and she dropped the lowest grade of each assignment (including exams). She also gave bonus points on exams. Exams covered lab and textbook material, so reading the textbook is a MUST. I recommend keeping hw and lab grades up to allow for more leeway for exam grades.
worst professor i ahve ever had at uconn . uconn DO BETTER
PLEASE DR HERRICK GIVE US EXTRA CREDIT PLEASE WE are begging please . its corona please
Professor Herrick's class was what you put into it. Lectures were all pre recorded and went thru very quiz. Exams were kind of difficult. However, with her grading policy of dropping 1 exam and 1 lab quiz, 1 HW, etc, you are able to do decent if you work hard enough. Not an easy A but a doable one. Hard to come in contact with her but a fine class!
Lectures are basically her going over her slides that she posts online. Her tests can be difficult at times, but they are always manageable. She adds some extra credit points to each test, so you have a few freebies. In her lectures, she can be condescending and impatient, but overall she has a sense of humor and tells you what you need to know.
She was a good prof overall and wanted her students to succeed. With it being online she recorded the lectures along with having them on blackboard. To get an A in this class just study the lectures and the labs for the test. Don't procrastinate watching the lectures and you should be fine. She dropped the lowest of each assignment type and exam
If I could give her a zero rating I would. The most inconsiderate person I've ever come across, and definitely doesn't have the students' best interest in mind. So passive aggressive, always has an attitude, and very immature. Doesn't care to help you and she's also a horrible teacher.
She is one of the worst professors I have had at Uconn. She gets defensive when you ask for clarification. Not considerate, prepare to teach yourself!
She is a horrible professor, don't take it with her unless you have to!
One of the most stressful classes Ive had to take. Be prepared to self teach yourself almost everything because thats how youll pass. The TAs are going to be your best friend during lab, your really dont learn much from Herrick at all. Her lectures are just Q&As and theyre not even mandatory. If you lack perseverance then dont take this.
Prof. Herrick is very rude to students and often laughs when we ask a question. She talks to us like we should already know what she is teaching. Day 1 of class was yesterday and I am not impressed. I pay a lot of money to come to this school and I am disappointed in how rude and uncaring this professor is.
I'm not one to leave reviews unless I am extremely disappointed, so this says something. 3 weeks into class- makes rude and sassy comments during lectures, doesn't even lecture until she's 40 minutes into the class. Lockdown tests are strict and you get points taken off for things you can't control like losing your internet connection.
She made several mistakes regarding course content, does not clarify anything and is always passive aggressive when people ask her to clarify the things she messed up. She frequently taught us things wrong and had go to back and re-iterate the things she taught us improperly.
she's kind of super rude and doesn't care about her students, her work load isn't too bad tho. lectures are a waste of time, she does not teach during these times, you do all the learning on your own. good luck.
Dr. Herrick is extremely rude to students. Dont ask questions unless you want to be put down. I have never taken a class with a professor as rude and sarcastic as Dr. Herrick. Save yourself the time and dont take any classes with her.
Worst class I've taken, and I've taken OChem 1+2. Way too many assignments due weekly, lectures are pointless so get ready to teach yourself from the textbook. So many rules for the LockDown Browser webcam "quizzes" (they're just exams w/ a diff name). You end up focusing more on if you look like you're cheating to the camera than the actual exam!!
By far the worst prof Ive had at UCONN. very rude. barely teaches during class, and when she does she gets most of the content incorrect and has to start over because she messed up. hates answering questions and makes you feel like you shouldnt ask and that youre an inconvenience to her. Unreasonable about lockdown browser and downright nasty.
This woman... I dont understand why she is the only choice for over 400 students. Shes lecture is useless and the test is difficult even if you study hard enough. She is rude to students and has unreasonable rules of the lockdown browser. I highly recommend UConn to find someone else to teach this class.
I had a decent experience. With my class last semester she was very flexible considering everything is online. Though, she would be stubborn and would barely answer my emails.
Dr. Herrick gives a lot of homework, but if you stay on top of your work you will be fine and get a good grade. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities and one of each of your lowest assignments are dropped.
Its more helpful to read through the PowerPoints yourself and take notes than lectures; she usually just talks about random things for the first 15 minutes of lecture. I had an issue with environment checks for online learning and received a very passive aggressive email from her not even detailing what I did wrong. Go to labs every week, they help
This class was so boring it was all about plants and fungi. She never talked about the material in class, instead telling us about her nature walks and telling us obscure stories. The tests were hard but fair, I recommend doing the reading and studying.
Adding on to past entry. She claims that her dropping the lowest grade of each type of assignment helps. In fact it is a pitiful excuse for help. Even when I was at my worst, she just gave me the pre-typed answer that the lowest grades will be dropped. I barely got a B- by the skin of my teeth. Do not expect to get emails back that are helpful.
Overall, I thought she was a good professor. She wants her students to succeed in her class and gives out lots of extra credits. The answers for all HWs and LCs that are assigned for each chapters can be found online. This class can be a lot, but do the practice problems she gives out and read the textbook thoroughly, then you'll be fine
Dr. Herrick believes everything revolves around her class. You have bi-weekly "quizzes." The definition of a quiz is: "a test of knowledge, especially a brief, informal test given to students." Her "quizzes" are 50 question exams. Not the hardest class by a long shot, but way too much of a time commitment for an intro bio course. Get another prof.
Dr. Herrick is decent but the class is a lot of self-teaching. To do well on the exams, you must study her slides, read the textbook, go over the pre/post labs, practice questions, and be well prepared to comply with the strict lockdown browser rules if you have to take the exams online. It's not necessarily hard to get an A in the class though.
Contrary to some of the other reviews, I found Dr. Herrick to be a fantastic professor. She was very knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions. She is both engaging and stern, which I do think is an important combination when teaching 400+ students. It's not a difficult class to pass as long as you put in effort. Would take Dr. H again.
This professor is terrible. Although she offers extra credits, she still made the class more difficult than it could be. But the most important thing is she was so strict about the lockdown browser. I feel like she treats lockdown browser like her best friend and the class wont be perfect without it. Not recommended AT ALL.
Dr. Herrick is a wonderful person, but she's tough on you. If you talk to her she will be understanding but reasonable, and she can be tough. Lab is helpful for understanding things, and I recommend going to lecture as Dr. Herrick will say things that might help more than what she puts on the slide. She's lovely but tough.
Worst professor. She was so upset about us not submitting her evaluations and accused the class of "only submitting the negative ones." Last semester the final exam was optional. This semester it's required and she has hardly given us any info and not even a study guide. Take this class if you want to teach yourself. Otherwise, run.
Dr. Herrick is easily one of the worse professors I've ever had. She was extremely condescending and rude to her students. Her exams aren't too hard, but she made the final mandatory which hurt so many student's grades. I had a really good grade before the final. I don't understand why she's the only option for 1108.
Never take this class. It sucks she is the only prof. for 1108. Not only did she make the final mandatory (when the other 1108 classes were optional), she also scheduled the exam on 2 different days, which is unfair because now the students that did not take the exam already know what they are going to expect and what to study for. RIP grades
If you have the chance to take a different bio class please do it. With COVID, her lockdown standards are too high and her tests are too hard. Also too much work and made long lecture videos without really teaching during allotted class time. She gives some extra credit that I did but the final was so bad it dropped my grade 5 percentage points.
Helpful outside of class. Even Online.
Dr. Herrick was a terrible professor. She was hard to contact and very rude to her students. I had a really good grade before the final, but then she made it mandatory and it caused almost everyone's grade to plummet.
I was supposed to finish this class with a A but at the end she accused 4 students (that I know of) of cheating. We all did not cheat but she threw a bunch of accusations and did not budge. If you even look anywhere other than your screen or even if you look at your screen wrong Fail. Pretty sure she's racist as well all accused students were POC.
This is all I want to say: if you need/want to take Bio1108 and she will be the instructor, RUN! This teacher will destroy your college life and experience. Good luck.
People are harsh on her because they didnt do well in her class. Their fault. Shes a fine teacher, if a tad condescending, and likes to fear-monger when it comes to LockdownBrowser exams. Class is super easy, and she offers enough extra credit that I had a 100+ for the whole class. Do the clearly-assigned work and fly under the radar. Not hard.
Some comments are saying people only are negative when they do poorly in her class. That really isnt true. I received an A and did well in her class, but she is horrible. She is extremely condescending and never answers emails. Dont bother asking questions or you might be laughed at. Finished with a 95 and still would never recommend her.
Herrick has a very strict teaching style and will not change even if it doesn't work for her students. She doesn't let us use ANY tech in lecture and forces everyone to take notes on paper. She does not answer her emails. But, I can say she has a very structured class and clear deadlines, lots of extra credit. Make sure you study hard
Suzan Was a terrific instructor, She gives you plenty of time on the exam, all the questions are really well worded! Shes very easy and allows many different learning styles including technology of all sorts. Super understanding when u email her Man she is such a great professor, She teaches some of the most interesting material at this universit
Shes really nice if you just follow her rules and fly under the radar. However, I relied more on my TA than I did on her. I once came up to her at the end of lecture for help and she made me feel stupid so I never went again. If you go to class it will help you big time. The only homework you get is learning curves so use them to your advantage.
I honestly don't know why she has such low reviews. I took 3 core classes this semester and this was the only one I got an A in. She offers lots of extra credit. There are weekly quizzes in lab but they really help, especially since all the exams have a lot of those same questions. She is also really good at explaining the concepts in lecture.
Not sure what the terrible reviews are about, Herrick is nice enough and knows her stuff. Huge class so she can't be as accommodating as some people want. Tough subject with quite a bit of work, studying is a must. But, she offers extra credit and does a pretty good job with giving you the resources to succeed.
I loved Professor Herrick! Her class is not the easiest, and there is a lot of material but overall she cares a lot about her students and wants you to succeed. I highly recommend going to TA tutoring hours and office hours if you are struggling. Overall she is a very sweet and intelligent woman and I would take another course taught by her!
Her bad reviews had me really scared for her class but she is actually a really good teacher she had no problem explaining things that you dont understand and she does try to make class interesting and she offers quite a bit of extra credit assignments
Herrick has her pros and cons. She does not provide any real guidance as to what is going to be tested so you will need to study everything. Weekly quizzes, 2 exams, and a final can be quite challenging. However, she gives quite a generous amount of EC and she also curved all 3 exams up as well. Overall a decent class just not that interesting imo.
I think she is a good person but as a teacher she is very condescending. She makes it so difficult for you to do better on future exams and quizzes by not allowing you to look back at the wrap up quizzes, unless you make an appointment or come to office hours. She also does unnecessary tactics to prevent cheating for the final.
With Dr. Herrick I had mixed feelings about her. One con is that she gave you no direction to go in when it came to exams and quizzes. You pretty much had to know everything or you were stuck, but she genuinely wants her students to succeed. She does offer a lot of extra credit and exams are 50% recycled quizzes.
Susie's lectures aren't really that helpful except for the videos that she shows occasionally. Labs are very easy. GO TO TA OFFICE HOURS! super helpful. weekly quizzes are little hard so study. midterm and end term are 50% repeats of weekly quizzes so make sure you review them with the TA at office hours. the final is a breeze. easier than 1107.
lectures were useless, which is her whole job. she didn't teach anything that was actually on the exams or quizzes, and the only reason i did decent was my lovely TA. countless mistakes on exams and grades that had to be corrected and she just talks and talks about unimportant things. terrible. take another teacher.
reasonable, gives lots of extra credit, interesting enough, no complaints really.
She provides a lot of extra credit. Very accessible and helpful during office hours. Test questions are straight from the learning curves and lab quizzes. Very textbook focused class. She doesn't always respond to emails and can come off as condescending occasionally.
Thought that this class would be better after BIO1107, was wrong. Definitely reading the textbook will help you, but her no electronics policy, and no make-up policy proves that she cares more about herself than her actual students. You can't learn the way you want, and you can't get sick or have a family emergency, or you get a 0 on assignments.
I don't think Herrick is as bad as everyone says. Yes, she can be condescending and rude in emails, but her class is very straightforward and she has clear expectations. Her no electronics policy is a little lame, but really isn't the end of the world. Not the best, not the worst. Lectures were kinda boring, exams were easy. Overall, not bad.
Professor Herrick makes her exams very difficult and for only have 2 exams for the semester, there was too much information to study. I learned more in lab than I did in class, make sure you take notes.
To be honest, I really don't like this class. Lecture is legit pointless to go to because she just rambles on about random stuff. She claims she has taught this class for years so she "knows how to teach it" but she literally doesn't. The content is also so boring in my opinion. I think she is a nice person but I hate how this class is set up.
8/10 prof, v straightforward class, sometimes difficult in regards to being accessible outside of class but she's a v understanding prof, she provides "lecture notes"/study guides, bullet points are basically what's on the exam
It is very clear that Dr. Herrick enjoys teaching and wants her students to do well, however, Dr. Herrick is definitely not the greatest professor I've ever had. To do well on the exams, you either need to take in-depth notes of each chapter or go to lecture (which often doesn't help). Lab for the class is simple but very boring. Overall avg class!
Can't stress enough how POINTLESS lecture is. She talks so much but says NOTHING useful. I stopped going after the second class. If you read the textbook and take good notes, the exams aren't too bad. 3 exams, and lowest score is dropped, which is nice. Final exam is easy cuz every single question is from an old exam/lab quiz.
I LOVED professor Herrick, she was honestly one of the best professors I've had in this school. Her exams are based on the stuff she mentions lectures so make sure u go to those and mae sure to read the textbook which she connects with a learning curve. so if u want a good grade make sure u read the books. otherwise she gives a bunch of extra credi
This course was extremely difficult to study for because there was so much material and exam questions were so specific. 7-8 chapters per exam and only 50 mc qs. Final exam was very easy, repeated questions from every exam that most of the class got right. Extra credit helps, do them all. Prof rarely replied to emails.
Dr.Herrick is a great professor teaching a boring class. She made sure to give ample extra credit and all exams are fair and she gives a handful of the questions in the MCQ reviews she posts to help in addition to +4 to your exam grades automatically. But the content is so boring especially the plant unit and lab is annoying and useless.
Went to maybe 3 lectures the whole semester, definitely not necessary to attend. Provides a ton of resources to study from, generally an easy class. She's not a bad professor but not great either, and got on my nerves on occasion (one of the reasons I stopped attending lecture). Very difficult to get ahold of outside of class.
Her class is fine. Just review the lecture slides, and you'll probably ace the exams.
REALLY rough class! Lots of people hate her and I see why, but I thought it was a great. One of my favorites. if you enjoy lectures where the teacher gives info and you can just take notes and work on your own, this is your class. Go to class, take notes, and do the recommended prep, youll be fine. homework grades based on completion.
Her lectures are okay I guess, very boring and not very helpful on how to understand hard topics. The Tests are truly AWEFUL. the first 2 exams I failed, and I mean FAILED with a 49 and a 46. I studied hard but the questions are so precise. I won't ever take Herrick again, but she was a nice person I guess.
She is nice, there no computer use in class
Herrick was just terrible. I got no resources for the class. The grades are soley based off exams, there is a ton of reading and she is not clear. I studied so much and she was super backhanded and made me feel terrible when I asked for help and was looking for help
Went to probably like 5 lectures, attendance is not necessary. Studied primarily off of the slides and her practice problems and did just fine, class is pretty easy, although reading the book helps. Her lectures are meh but she gave lots of extra credit and made the final super easy (studied for maybe an hour and got a 110, the average was a 99).
my most favorite UConn professor. Don't look over these wrong reviews! She's by far the sweetest, especially if you show interest. She also tries to help you even on a personal level whenever she could. Exams and grading is very clear. Just watch the recorded lectures 2-3 times and you would secure an A even if the topic isn't really your interest.
Don't need to go to class, tests are HARD. Study a lot.
does not care about students, gives three big tests within 6 days of each other. No respect for student time
This class was a lot of reading and memorization to prepare for tests. I didnt think it was that hard, but Im also a junior MCB major and the majority of students were freshman who had no clue what they were doing. My advice would be to actually read the textbook and you should be fine.
Lectures are pretty dry. Material isn't that bad and the tests were pretty easy IMO, but the average was about a 75 for most tests. Reading the textbook helps. Homework is easy, lab is easy but a complete snoozefest. The final is half lab stuff half lecture. She puts the unit 3 test, a lab practical and the final all in the last week which sucks.
If you do not have to take this course, then don't. She goes through lectures pretty fast. You're better off reading the textbook. She does not do review sessions for each unit exam, so try to go to tutoring hours to help you better understand the material.
Do you believe there are THREE midterms and ONE final with TWO lab practicals which are also TESTS. midterm3 and final in 7 DAYS just like the speed of her class. I don't know why so fast. She is intentionally catching the schedule, though never feel sorry when she wasted the time on unorganized and somehow irrelevant stories!
Too many tests. Frankly speaking, you need to work a lot. She always want to tell new freshman that college is not easy. But college is easy when one loves to work on it and dive into it. She made the interest of freshman like me dull.
Dr. Herrick is a very kind and understanding professor. However, her lectures are very long with no breaks which made it hard to really focus in class. The exams are pretty difficult, but there are practice quizzes that have a lot of the questions on them. You have to do a lot of work outside the class in order to succeed. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
Bio 1108 class is tough, their is only one professor who teaches this class which sucks, her lectures are a lot of her just rambling on and on about stuff that has nothing to do with biology, she does a good job lecturing though. Her exams questions are mostly learning curves, quizzes and study quiz except for second exam.
Bio 1108 is doable if you know how to study, because I didn't learn from Dr. Herrick, I was very lucky to have an amazing TA. Some of her exam questions are so random and information she mentioned maybe once in class, and her lectures are absolutely terrible because she rambles so much. Lab is easy as long as you put in the minimal studying.
I took this in the Fall and she was a very hard professor, the exams were hard though some questions came from the lab quizzes. She wasn't very accessible outside of class, and was very bad at responding to emails. It's a no electronics class so you have to use a notebook to take notes, but the exams are on computers on lockdown browser.
I found lectures to be useless as it consists of the professor reading directly off the slides which are accessible outside of class. Test questions are incredibly specific making tests challenging for students as you can't just have a "general" understanding of topics. Students had to teach themselves rather than learn from the professor.
Susan Herrick has been by far the most toughest grade I've had. She has constantly side tracked throughout the course which had no relevance towards lecture. Herrick does not give any curves, she compares grades with what you've done to her videos, learning curves etc. Her exams are very specific and often do not make sense.
Her class is difficult and she is not compassionate toward her students at all. More than half the class failed an exam and she never curved it or gave those people extra credit. This is hard and very time-consuming. She talks more about her personal life than the lecture material.
Study study study on your own because the lectures will not be enough. The exams are tough sometimes. TA office hours will help as well. Herrick's lectures do require you to listen because she'll occasionally ramble about unrelated stuff and you'll have to sift through what is important to write. She does strongly care about her students' health
she spoke about her personal life the entire time during lectures, her slides were useless, her lectures were impossible to follow There are 3 exams that weighed an insane amount Her scheduling is crammed there are little resources available to help and she could care less Don't email her she will just answer you with attitude. avoid her if you can
idk about 1108 but she's a great professor for vert bio. She's great, she loves what she's doing, she's strict but fair, and genuinely cares about students.
she's the only 1108 prof and she's not terrible. there's a lot of content but it's not hard to understand. you really only need to throughly go through the slides to do well on exams. be prepared because she doesn't allow laptops, only paper or iPad. she's nice, I just thought it was boring. Lab is easy and you don't turn anything in, just quizzes.
IF YOU ARE PRE-MED! Do not take this class you can skip it by taking an upper level Bio class. Please save your time and GPA by not taking this class. She does not stay on topic when it comes to lectures. Lab is a waste of time. This woman does not care about her students, but "flexes" how she failed undergrad 3 times...
She is not a good teacher. After attending all the lectures leading up to the first exam, I stopped going because they were pointless and was better off teaching it to myself. She is not helpful and will entirely blame the students for not doing as well as she wants. She expects too much of the students 9 chapters/exam is too much to memorize.
You are expected to memorize concepts from about 7-9 chapters per exam. Lectures are almost completely useless, and a waste of time. You are better off teaching yourself. You have a lot to read weekly. The last exam average was about a 67, and she refused to curve it. She talks down to the class, and comes off harsh and rude.
She makes this class harder than it needs to be. I stopped attending lectures after a few times because she gets off topic.
An amazing professor who's willing to go above and beyond in order to help their students. She's very nice and good. Gives advice and a lot of help even on personal level. very amazing professor! Easy A. Clear criteria. I took her online class and we had a lot of fun!
She is absolutely brutal. Does not say anything worth while in the lectures, just talks about personal tangents and super specific stuff that isn't on the tests. Better off teaching yourself with the textbook cause her lectures are pointless. Would never take her class again.
Tended to go on random tangents about her personal life/accomplishments/things unrelated to lecture. Assigned huge amounts of content to cover in exams, then shamed students for their grades. The one good thing I have to say is that the exams were not too difficult or in depth, but there was so much material to know that studying took forever.
Worst class I have taken at UConn. Her lectures are pointless and a waste of time, and she talks about herself half the time. You are better off using the class time on your own to teach yourself. So much content and memorization per exam. She is pretty rude and got angry when many people did poor on the exam, when in reality, she is the problem.
She rambles on about failing college, getting old, unnecessary topics in lecture. Exams (3) are HARD, online book is heavy. Exams not including finals. Lab is okay. She wants you to self teach; lecture is boring and pointless. Emails are judgemental!
Lectures are pointless, she will go on about her personal life or study tips and skip over material & says you should know it. Worst thing about her is she doesn't curve and her exams are on a ridiculous amount of information. About 8 chapters per exam and the chapters are very long and some of the questions are ridiculous to ask a student to know
Tough class with, a fair teacher. You defiantly get what you earn most of the kids getting D or C probably don't know how to study yet. That's ok because this will be many people's first hard class. The teacher isn't bad, I actually quite liked her. Lab depends on your TA. Read the textbook through the learning curve study the slides and extra quiz
You do not need to attend lecture for this class because she posts all her slides. Memorizing her slides, the extra homework questions at the end of each chapter, and the learning curve questions are great ways to prepare for the exams. Go to TA office hours each week to do well on the lab quizzes.
She gets a lot of hate, but her policies do promote learning. Her tests are very conceptual, so hard to study if you haven't been understanding the material, but easy if you do. Lots of extra credit options including in the tests. She cares about her students but has a tough love approach. No laptops in class unless you have an accommodation.
Honestly, unless you're ready to do a lot of reading, memorizing, and self teaching, do not take this class. She spends her lectures going on about how she flunked college three times and about her kids and family, then proceeds to skip through important slides assuming you know it by then and religiously read the book. Exams are hard, lab is great
I would give her a 0 if I had the option to. Avoid this class if you can. She does not understand that there are things out of your control that will cause you to miss labs or a major exam. Doesn't matter if you're in the hospital, she still expects you to show up or you get a zero. Study learning curves and practice quizzes they really help!
This is a class you'll have to spend a lot of time on, it's not hard, but unless you plan on studying EEB it's a useless class. Also, going to lectures is a waste of time because she doesn't let you use electronics. Honestly, unless you plan on prioritizing plant anatomy all semester you're better off taking another higher-level biology course.
Professor Herrick was nice but lectures never covered the ridiculous amount of material on the exams so I stopped going and had to teach myself, exam averages were also failing or close to it. Lab was only graded based on beginning of lab quizzes so there was no credit for having to be there for 3 hours and the grade didn't help the lecture grade.
She grades based on a point system. Most points can be gathered by lab, HW, and extra credit. Not necessary to go to lecture- all lecture content is on huskyct. Exams are only based on what content are on slides. Very strict, will not round grades or allow make-ups, but she is fair. Not a bad class but the amount of reading killed it for me.
Dr Herrick is just ok. Her lectures go off topic- I only attended the first couple weeks and by teaching myself got an A. To succeed, prioritize your lab grade (every point counts!) and study from the slideshows/posted guides. Focus on comprehension over memorization- her exam questions are conceptual. Count on the easy final as a grade booster
Herrick is nice at heart. Her class is tough- easily the toughest class I've had in college so far. But- her lecture overall feels like a drag. I ended up doing well by studying the slides. Lab is a great grade booster for most- for me it wasn't though. She can be funny in lecture, but just isn't good at teaching. Also, do the extra credit!
This course requires you to spend a lot of time studying for so be prepared for that. Using her slides and practice questions were helpful for studying. If I had done this from the beginning, I'm sure I could have gotten an A or A-. Also going to TA office hours will be helpful since every point in the lab quizzes counts.
Susan Herrick is completely delusional about her life. She spends immense time telling the class about her time in the Peace Corps and as an EMT. Her blackboard is disorganized. She does not follow her rubric for grading assignments. She has multiple outdated assignments with incorrect information. Does not care about her students.
I found the lectures consists of Dr. Herrick reading directly off the slides which are accessible outside of class. Test questions are incredibly specific making tests challenging for students as you can't just have a "general" understanding of topics. Personally I feel that during lectures, she can get off topic and go on tangents.
This professor is delusion and her syllabus is absurd. She runs this class like it's the military and expects you to figure every aspect of navigating her course out on your own. No laptops are allowed. If you miss two labs you receive an automatic F regardless of the reason. She does not give out her slideshows. Plus side there some extra credit
Professor Herrick is a terrible lecturer. Her policies are tough and unreasonable, not allowing for any type of emergency if you miss a lab or quiz. Extremely test heavy. She does not have any understanding of pedagogy, and she does not know how to effectively teach students, reading the textbook and reviewing the slides is the only way to pass.
DO NOT take this class. I would take this class in any community college. I wonder why UCONN(professor) makes this class so challenging to pass. Quizzes every week pre& post quizzes and exams are 6 or 8 chapters. You must memorize a lot of terms and formulas. I do not know why she is the only teacher for this class.
Speaking as a BIO major senior here. For some reason Herrick likes to stuff as many assignments into your schedule to make this class harder than it actually is. The labs are terribly formatted and it is apparent that the course hasn't been revised in years. Personally I do not enjoy her lectures at all and I was able to pass with just the textbook
Lectures consist of her rambling on irrelevant topics. Her exams reflect her teaching style, as they are composed of questions that come primarily from the textbook and adaptive quizzes. She tells students to focus on core concepts provided in her lecture slides, but exam questions are almost always more specific than she claims we should know.
I had an amazing expetience and learned a lot from her, overall thought she was cool!
the worst, meanest, and worst professor I have ever encountered in my four years of college. Although she will give extra credit, her marking is very strict and hellish. The most annoying collection tour this semester she didn't write it on the syllabus at all, and this is worth 15 points so many people were unable to participate, not chance/Excuse
A tad bit condescending. I along with numerous other people feel as if she comes across as passive aggressive. Exams are heavily text based, not to mention they have very specific questions you would only be able to know if you looked extensively into each topic. Deadlines are set tight, so if you take other high maintenance classes be prepared.
bad.
Unrealistic expectations for students, assigns long & dense textbook readings and tests have overly specific questions despite her repeatedly saying they only require general knowledge. In lecture she rambles about random topics that aren't on the exams as well as her delusions about her personal life. Unreasonably strict policies w/ no exceptions.
If you aren't taking 1108 then don't listen to the other reviews. She's a completely different and much worse professor in 1108 than in vert bio or herpetology. She can be a tough grader but in smaller classes she is much more fair and forgiving, and her lectures are much more fun the more you narrow in on her specialty subject - frogs.
Insists on making the course as hard as possible not for the sake of having everyone learn or be challenged, but to arbitrarily weed out as many people as possible who want to continue in the BIOL courses. Lots of mandatory homework, lab sessions can last the full 3 hours very often, and not a kind person.
As a bio major, this will probably be one of your hardest classes your first two years. Her lectures are so useless that nobody comes to them and the lecture hall is not even 1/4 full. Post-Labs are impossible and there is no real study guide for them. Lastly, The average in the class is less than a B- and many people drop. DO EXTRA CREDITS.
She babbles in all of her lectures they aren't even worth going to. The course load is a lot if you fall behind as there's 2 chapters a week. It's all memorization with the reading. She's rude and inconsiderate also. Only take if major req
Attendance for labs is necessary no matter what, even when you are sick. you will receive an F for a missed lab no matter what. She told TA's not to provide us with information. We had no access to any of our quizzes and in the first half of the semester we had no access to slides from the lab. This class is a weed out class. DO NOT TAKE HERRICK.
Blatantly a weed-out course, tells students to "suck it up" in response to the abysmal content load, goes off on bizarre tangents during lectures instead of covering the absurdly high content load, way too much content per test, etc. First exam average: 69 Second exam average: 63 etc. NO CURVE
Cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Explanations of topics are clear, study material is provided, and extra credit is offered. Lots of reading homework, and if you don't do it you will fall behind. That's unrelated to Dr Herrick though, you'll have the same issue in any 1108 class. 4 instead of 5 because she can go on tangents.
Boring lectures, goes on tangents, don't need to go (look over PPTs). Focus on the PowerPoints and review word docs before exams (memorize them). Multiple chapters of notes every week, don't fall behind. Not too hard just a ton of boring material so it can be hard to focus. Final is cumulative (lecture+lab) RIP so study early.
Other reviewers aren't wrong about Herrick - she tends to get off topic during lectures and the class does require a lot of reading. However, I didn't mind the effort I had to put in because the content was genuinely interesting (except for the plant unit). The extra credit and lab quizzes are a godsend.
Dr. Herrick's lecture is not bad, she just rambles sometimes. Georgia was an amazing TA, that's what makes or breaks the lab. The class is based on 3 lecture exams, weekly lab quizzes, and 2 lab exams. If you have an A before the final you can opt out of it. Just look at the slides, the problem sets, and do the extra credit and you'll get an A.
She is an incredibly helpful and inspiring teacher. The class itself is challenging, but the way she explains content in class makes it easier to understand. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities.
Must take notes on what she says during lecture, her slides do not have much information on them so there is not any possibility of reviewing them afterwards. Her exams are extremely difficult and ask questions on the smallest details. She doesn't care about student struggles outside of the class and will not make accommodations for emergencies.
Believe what everyone else is saying, please-- she's a terrible teacher. I stopped going to lectures after the first 2 weeks, I taught myself everything using the textbook. If u wanna get a good grade, don't waste ur time going to lecture- read the textbook and understand the concepts. Use herricks 1108 as an opportunity to teach urself biology lol
Has a tendency to go on tangents and reads off the powerpoints she posts online anyway. Not worth going to lecture.
Prof Herrick is nice. Many who struggle don't put in the time this course deserves (1hr/day IMO). Her teaching abilities are subpar. She offers a ton of EC and A in class=optional final. Best tips for succeeding: MEMORIZE PowerPoints, do the practice quizzes in extras folder. Memorize Qs from post-lab quiz. It's not hard, just a lot of info.
Not sure why so much hate for Herrick bc I thought her lectures were helpful and understandable. She seemed very passionate. Make sure you read the textbook, prepare for the lab quizzes, and study. Lots of extra credit opportunities and if you have an A you're exempted from the final.
You don't need to go to lectures. The second exam is unnecessarily hard, but the others aren't awful. Memorize the slides and take light notes on the textbook (a lot of the info is unnecessary, use the slides to guide you). The lab quizzes are hard (study for them...!) but the practicals is the exact same questions from the quizzes. Quizlet. Trust.
She's a great professor for upperclassmen, she just really doesn't like freshmen. If you're looking to take vert biology or herpetology or other classes she's great. a bit strict but also very fun, and despite being entirely lectures she plays videos throughout and changes things up so it's not as droll as some other professors can be.
If you put in the work you can get an A. Use the slides to study, don't bother with the textbook. Final is an easy grade booster (took me from a B+ to an A-). Susan goes off topic a lot, but not as bad as most of the reviews make her seem. The bonuses are silly, but helpful. I thought most of the information was interesting, expect of for unit 2.
1 star reviewers are being whiny. For me, I love the no-laptops rule; it helped me focus so much better. She's smart, a good lecturer, and I loved getting to skip the final (she has a special rule for that). In her office hours she's very amusing and explains things well, take advantage of those.Tip: Take notes before class, then annotate in class
Before taking the tests I was super nervous because there was so much new content that I've never seen before. The tests weren't too hard but you'll need to put in the work for that A. Labs are helpful if you have a TA that knows what they are talking about. This is a class that tests your ability to study and learn on your own. Good luck.
assignments before each class, lectures she spends discussing personal matters, the textbook and youtube will be all that teaches you in this class. not only does she barely cover material in her lecture, but she will refuse letting you take an exam if you were in the hospital during the exam. she doesnt care for her students nor on if they learn
She is one of the worst professors. This course has 3 exams and the final, and the third exam is on the week before the final. Her lectures and slides are not really helpful for the exams. I skipped all the lectures and only read the textbook which is more useful to prepare for the exams.
made me question if i even wanted to do stem. funny person, terrible instructor. makes a dense class so much harder than it has to be. exams are awful and complicated for no reason. treats us like prisoners. dont take her
lectures not good will go off topic or just reads off slides. labs were the only reason i understood material. nice person but not the best prof. does post slides so lectures not mandatory.
The content is difficult to grasp but she is not the worst lecturer. She gets off topics sometimes and it can be difficult to follow her but go to office ours of TA office hours. Her exams are difficult but if you study hard you will be fine. Do all the extra credit!! If you get an A we were exempt from the final. Study hard for lab quizzes too!
nice person but not the best professor. gives extra credit which is great which helps your grade a lot. lab helps you better understand the material. lectures go off topic a lot which is tough to keep paying attention
Left stem after this class. She is a bit rude as a professor and doesn't provide helpful of feedback post-exam (via email in my case). Talked down on students at times due to it being majority freshman who were enrolled. The lab was way more informative than the lecture but the quizzes were still quite difficult.
She is a very strict grader, and does not accept partial credit. She expects you to study 18 hours a week for her course. Her PowerPoints are very confusing and aren't on the exam. She goes off on tangents about how we need to do better. Her exams are rigged, they are 60% adaptive quiz questions. Lab is helpful but quizzes are still rough.
I have nothing negative to say personally about Dr. Herrick but I know some people who believe she is a bit rude and dismissive. The class however is just terrible and I like the subject. The exams are quite difficult and it's hard to do well. The lab was worse. The TA didn't explain anything. Only take if you absolutely have to.
Didn't enjoy the content and exams were very TB heavy. Her personality and humor is a little dry so it's hard to stay engaged in 75 min lectures. Lab is mostly dry-lab so not many engaging experiments and lab quizzes are a bit hard. Achieve HW 2x a week sucked but it helps your grade and exams are heavily based on it. She barely responds to emails
very boring in lecture so it's not worth going to UNLESS lecture after exam. there she kinda reviews a bit about what some got wrong and the exam average. just read the slides she posts on HUSKY CT and go over the achieve questions and you're good. Lab was boring compared to 1107, mostly observing. quizzes are easy if you study the material hard
I'm well aware I'm speaking from a position of being in a seminar class but Dr. Herrick is an amazing professor if you aren't a freshman in 1108. I promise you, she is an amazing professor who is like a mom to all her students. She offered students a place to take exams if CSD ignores your requests. She doesn't deserve the score she has on here.
Love this professor. Clearly explained every topic and gave ample extra credit opportunities. Such a refreshing class compared to Abbott for 1107. Lab however is very boring. Final is made to boost your grade if you do not have an A!
I was nervous for this class but Dr. Herrick truly does not deserve the rating she has. She has so many opportunities for extra credit and gives so many resources to study from. If you need help, talk to her. She is truly there to help her students when possible. Her emails are a bit firm at times but she is so mother tbh
this class is not as bad as people make it out to be. I loved Dr. Herrick! She is amazing my #1 tip: GO TALK TO HER! Her class is hard but just read the material and do the work you will be fine. She is very undertanding if you put in the work!!
She actually is not all that bad of a teacher. Her lectures are somewhat good, but you have to read the chapters to learn most of it. This class was just incredibly boring, especially the lab. My reasoning for the low rating is due to her exams. The exams were stupid hard and mostly stemmed from super specific sections of the book. Do not recommend
She's not as bad as people make her out to be. Her lectures aren't super helpful, but a lot of professors aren't. Exams were hard if you didn't study. To study, read the textbook and reviewed the achieve questions, and the extra stuff she gives, plus quizlet. Lab is definitely boring, but easy. Just put a little effort and you'll be fine!
She only gets a bad rep because you have to know how to study for her tests- I've had her for multiple courses and she cares a lot for her students- if you're confused stay back and ask her questions! My favorite professor, you just need to know how to study for her tests
The class was challenging, but Professor Herrick provided plenty of extra credit opportunities. The lab helped me better understand the material. For study prep, I found unstuckstudy ai and the textbook to be very useful.
The worst teacher I have ever had. She is deceptively nice at the start but she ruthlessly picks on students and wastes most of class time talking about herself and her beliefs. Those who rate her well have never had to deal with her personally, she is arrogant and self righteous. If you have critical thinking dont use it in this class.
This course could be the worst experience in school, the workload is super overwhelming while the test is so hard as well. The professor intentionally made a lot of trouble to us and unreasonable strict on all the things. She has reasons for her office hour cancel all the time while we cannot have any reasons for leave even with serious fever.
Hard class, interesting material but too much and too broad. Hundreds of examples and will pull from them at random on exams. Must be confident in phylogenetics. Cares about students but expects that you will put in ~6-10 hours each week. Don't take, nothing special, other classes meet this requirement for EEB majors.
This course was AWFUL. The exams are incredibly hard for no reason and she goes on unnecessary tangents during her lectures. The lab was time consuming and boring. I have taken other sciences (Bio1107, PNB2264, CHEM, etc) here at UConn and this one was by far the most irritating, I recommend you do not take it unless necessary.
During lectures, she doesn't talk about content much; she gets distracted, and her exams are challenging, with no instruction on how/what to study when it comes to the exam content.
I honestly don't think she deserves all these reviews. She's very nice if you talk to her. You really just have to know how to study for her tests; just read the textbook and take notes on the chapters being tested. She also gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit. Just do all your work on time and study for the tests and you'll do fine.
From my experience in Dr. Herrick's class, she was a rude, unprofessional professor. She was very inconsiderate and had no regard for students well being. In class she would make remarks about unrelated school things and expect students to respect her even after her very off putting words.
I honestly dont think she deserves all the bad reviews she gets. she gives so much extra credit it's not even funny and she cares about her students. were her lectures boring and did she go off on tangents occasionally? yes. however, the lectures are not mandatory at all and you can do well even if you dont go. just read the book and youll be fine.
While Herrick gives out a lot of extra credit, the course itself is very hard. Her tests are extremely difficult and Lab itself is not easy. Herrick is also very rude and doesn't have a filter when speaking. God forbid you have a medical emergency. There are no retakes for exams & if you miss lab then you fall behind. Use AP Credit to skip class.
Exams are insane. No guidance or study guides. Too much content and only three exams. Confusing.
Dr. Herrick is not horrible like these reviews make her seem. She's actually really reasonable. READ THE TEXTBOOK. All lecture and lab material covered are directly referenced. Post lab quizzes are difficult, so make sure to study specific details. Lots of EC HW available. Quizlets with similar questions to the exam are so helpful. You got it!
Extremely poor utilization of lecture time - spending half of the allotted time complaining about Achieve, glazing her peers/colleagues, flaunting her academic prowess, or going on tangents about irrelevant information. No clear grading structure & provided resources for studying are quiet poor.
Herrick does not deserve all of these bad reviews. Textbook is very helpful but not necessary, there are other study tools. Exams are tough but manageable. Lab was the hardest part for me, be ready to know specific details for the post lab. Lecture is not mandatory and sometimes a waste of time. Don't have to take the final if you have an A(93%)!
Herrick is alright. I'm just bad at biology.
I honestly really like her as a person. She is very supportive of us as humans and wants to make sure we are okay. The class has a ton of extra credit, so you can end with a decent grade even if you do badly on exams. I just thought the material wasn't interesting, and the class was hard.
Was scared to take this class because of the awful thing ive heard about Dr.Herrick but I really think its unwarranted. She did huge curves on all of the exams and isnt even counting the final if it hurts your grade instead of helps. One big note is to DO ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT it actually helps. If you study not only a day before youll be fine.
Susan Herrick has an obvious disdain for students. She spends as much time in lecture justifying her complex and unyielding grading system as she does teaching biology. Do not plan to be ill, or have a family member pass away during the duration of this class - neither is a valid excuse for missing lab, and will result in a 0 on that week's quiz.
she's not awful, but she's bad. very intimidating -- is constantly reminding you that she is better than you because she has a PhD and is not very welcoming to student questions. lectures are kinda interesting but super content heavy. TAKE NOTES AND STUDY! have to read 2 textbook chapters and do homework on them every week in addition to unit exams
Don't go to lectures because she just spends the time flaunting how much better she is than you. The labs were very time consuming and boring. Don't even think about missing lab because she doesn't accept anything as an excuse. The exams are fine as long as you read the book and do the homework.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE PRE - MED. I ended up not going to lecture as it never benefited me and she was the worst at instructing. My tip if you do take this class - download her slideshows and add any additionally notes the textbook gives you since you are tested on the slideshow material and the textbook just helps you. Lab was easy tho.
Exams are so hard and she thinks an exam average around 70% is good. She gives lots of assignments and extra credit which really boosts your grade if you do bad on exams. Final is meant to boost your grade. Lab is really boring, but easy. Lab quiz every week which can be kinda tricky. She doesn't respond to emails. Nice person, not a good professor
I would recommend not wasting your time by going to lectures - she says in the beginning of the semester that she prefers you to write handwritten notes because it helps you retain information better, but then she proceeds to whip through the slides in under a minute before you can even write anything down. Mostly have to teach yourself the class.
If you are looking for a class to take for the lab requirement, DO NOT pick this one. The lectures were useless and the exam had some unfair questions. Like what everyone is saying, the professor talked about unrelated things a lot in lecture. Avoid this one unless you have no other choices.
I loved Dr. Herrick. She is very understanding and is always open to help during her office hours. If you do the assignments for each chapter you are almost guaranteed to pass the class (especially the extra credit ones). Attendance isn't mandatory but I found her lectures were helpful. Labs often end early.
Dr. Herrick was a very good professor and provided us with all the information we needed to ace the exams. Her slides provide all the information you will need for the exams, but the textbook is a good way to study and get answers for the homework. As long as you pay attention to and study her slides, you should do fine in this class.
The worst professor I have ever had in my life. There is no structure to class and lecture and lab exams are combined and during lab. She doesn't post slides and never told the bookstore about the textbook and didn't care that nobody had the textbook. The amount of content for each exam is insane and both lab and lecture have no structure.
She was wonderful! gives so many chances for extra credit. So helpful when you come to her outside of class. Lab was a bit boring and quizzes were difficult but overall interesting. Be sure to do all practice problems she gives to do well on exams.
(Fall '23) Complains more than helping us learn. Content isn't that difficult, just heavy. Do the practice quizzes/exams because she copies them onto the real exams. Lecture is pointless, just read the textbook and do well in the lab. If you're even a minute late, they lock the door and prevent you from doing the lab quiz. Gives decent extra credit
Lectures go by fast. No exam review sheet nor provides a lecture to review. Exams are hard, lots of questions not enough time, some are T/F questions but the rest are 2-3 sentences reading. Does not curve any grades. Questions in the exam are tricky, could have 2 potential answers. Lectures are not recorded. Pre lab videos are not that great either
This is the worst professor I have ever had. The material taught in lectures does not always apply to exams and tests. This is a test-heavy course for both lab and lecture. The lectures go by really fast. No review sheets are given for exams. If you don't have to take this class, spare yourself some suffering or take it elsewhere.
This class has been a nightmare. The lectures are practically useless to go to, get ready to teach yourself. Dr. Herrick as a person seems kind, but unfortunately class is poorly structured. The overall structure of the lab portion of the class is very poor. You aren't graded on anything in the manual, just a quiz on the material a WEEK later.
She's just fine as a professor, kind of condescending, but it's whatever. The class itself is so boring, and it's a lot of work. I wouldn't bother going to lecture; just go over the slides. She spends 5 seconds on each slide. You are going to have to teach yourself everything. Exams are very lecture-heavy, probably 350 slides per exam.
If susan herrick has 100 fans, I am one. If Herrick has 1 fan, I am that fan. If she has 0 fans, I am dead. She is sooo underrated and I love her she gives a ton of extra credit. I was getting sooo pissed bc people leave mid-lecture but she will call someone out!!! I just love her and exams are tough yes but she gives sm extra credit
I don't understand the Herrick hate. Yes, the content can be a little boring at times, but she really does her best to gauge some sort of interest if you actually listen to her. She gives so many opportunities for extra credit, even in the lab sections, and wants people to do well. 1108 was the least of my concerns this semester.
80% of the class never went to lecture but I did because she was interesting, although I'm a bio nerd so that might help my case. Do the homework, do the extra credit and study hard for the exams and you'll be fine. The labs are what really matter, the post-labs each class are tough. If you don't like bio you won't like this class.
Susan is pretty awful if i am gonna be honest these exams are not horrible but they also are not gonna be the easiest either, she rambles on about nonsense and dont even think about leaving class early if your already there (she will call you out) only good thing is extra credit but good luck
Lecture was the most useless thing and I stopped going about 3 weeks in. Get ready to read the textbook everyday and take good notes from it. Lab is also boring and you won't do much. She gives a lot of extra credit and homework which will def boast your grade.
Barely made an A. A for absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures are disorganized, monotone, and feel like punishment.
Love her so much she rounded my final grade so that I could be exempt from taking her final. I will say the tests are extremely difficult but she offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. Every week there is an extra credit assignment listed with the homework. Also, if you have an A before the final, she exempts you from taking it.
Lots of extra credit to boost grade, lab portion is so easy. She does get sidetracked during lecture but going helped maintain my grade because her slides are a lot of pictures so she explains them. Exams are mostly application based/vocab based. You do need to study but it is manageable.
REVIEW YOUR QUIZZES AND EXAMS WITH TA OR PROFESSOR. This is the only class I have ever taken where you are not allowed to see your quizzes or exams after you take them on your own. This is very inconvenient because your final will be past test questions, but you don't know what you got wrong in the past so it kind of cooks you.
Shoutout to my TA. I learned more from him than this horrible professor. Shoutout to Matthew.
Lectures are useless, gets distracted & drifts frequently, most un engaging professor I've had. Hard to reach outside of class, and when she does answer emails she's rude and not understanding at all. Exams are not released, so if you don't have time in your schedule to meet a TA you're essentially not allowed to review
Geniunely one of the worst professors I have ever had. She does not care about you, and she makes it known. There are no study guides, and her tests are extremely difficult. You can not review your past exams unless you have time to meet with a TA. Her lectures are a waste of time, and she will claim that tests are only the lecture material, LIES.
Tests were way too specific and lectures sucked. Did good on the lecture section and just forgot to study for the first lab practical so I got a B+. All the information I learned was outside of class. Skip lectures.
shes such a b, dont take her class youre gonna regret it
The rudest and most passive aggressive professor I've yet to have at UConn. Has no trust towards her students, and don't ask her questions, she'll stare like you should drop the course. Honestly, course itself is very doable but she's very incompassionate. My advice: never email her just email your lab TAs. Her energy is very off putting.
Professor is Herrick is very nice and will help explain any questions if you reach out to her. She offers a lot of extra credit that will boost your grade. Her tests are mainly on her slides, but it helps to read the textbook!
she actually drove me insane, she offers extra credit but wont give you it if you do it cause it "doesnt meet her criteria." like its extra credit its supposed to be easy?? during her exams she takes pictures of the lecture hall and will literally match ur face to see if you are there or if you are taking the exam somewhere else
grade is only composed of 3 exams and attendance which is determined by an in class assignment. exam is on paper and alot of information to memorize split between open ended and multiple choice questions. requires many hours of studying.
Grade depends solely on exams, so I skipped all lectures after 2 weeks; they were pointless. Once, the professor had us draw Batman on a surfboard every 5 minutes to illustrate active recall—that sealed it. You'll have to teach yourself. Lab is easy, but this is the worst class. Take it elsewhere; she's the only prof at Storrs.
Her office hours just consist of her being passive aggressive and making you feel stupid
Definitely a tricky class if you are not good at memorization. Unit 2 lecture + practical was hard. Gave out crazy EC! Study for lab. STUDY STUDY the textbook definitions and make flashcards, study the few graphs you may need to know and you'll do fine. Honestly I like Herrick's passion in class and people make her out to be worse than she is.
Unfortunately, she is the only professor for this class at UConn. Her teaching ethic can best be summed up by a quote from one of her first lectures of the year: "It is not my job to stand up here and teach you." Expect to cling to the textbook like a lifeline.
If this is a pre-req for you, be prepared for a very heavy, demanding semester. The exams are really difficult, though multiple choice, and have questions that are meant to make you second guess everything you know, so comprehend everything. Especially little details. Good luck.
The semester consisted of me basically teaching myself.
She's the only professor for this course, and most of the learning is on you. There isn't much help beyond self-studying. Lectures aren't very helpful, so the online textbook is basically required. Exams and labs are extremely difficult, and she even says, “Expect to get a C in this class rarely anyone gets an A.” Good luck.
As the only person teaching the course she seems to get away with a lot and knows it. She does not hesitate to bully the class for her own short comings. Her lectures are essentially useless as the exams mostly pull info from the textbook (that she doesn't feel obligated to discuss in class). Avoid the class if you can. Not worth the headache.
Your grade is only exams, even in lab. She will not help you to succeed. She is uncaring, inauthentic, and shows a general disdain for her students. Do NOT listen to what she says about not studying certain material, study EVERYTHING. Study by going through slides and then the text book to fill in all the information she misses. Avoid if possible.
Amazing! Dr Herrick deserves a better rating on here. She is truly dedicated to her students and wants to see them succeed. Attendance is not mandatory but you should go if you want a good grade. This class is not an easy A and whatever you do DONT UNDERESTIMATE THE POST LAB QUIZZES!! Read the textbook and use all the provided "adaptive quizzes"
Lectures do not help whatsoever. I went from science being my strongest subject to being my worst. Lecture slide material is not half of what is on the exams. Study the textbook.
It's definitely a lot of studying, but the content isn't too difficult to grasp. Lectures can be helpful, but using the textbooks and reading guides helped me more. Some homework questions are on the exams. Her energy is very cold, but she does offer lots of extra credit. Study for post-lab quizzes and the two lab practicals!!!
As a person, she is very nice and will help you if you're stuck. I did find myself learning a lot more from the textbook and from my own research than the lectures themselves. Make sure to read, as the exams and quizzes are heavy and draw material from the readings primarily, and be prepared to put in at least an hour of studying daily.
Very rude. If your grade is a 92.8, she will not raise it no matter what. Kicks people out of class for no reason. Exams are hard.
I never attended lectures, they're unnecessary, study off the slides 100%. There's a LOT of material so get ready to memorize many concepts and terms but as long as you are willing to put the work in you'll be ok. There's no HW only exams. Unit 2 is the most difficult but she gave us an EC opportunity at least. I HATED the labs/lab quizzes.
Herrick will be no help to you whatsoever, if you email her you either won't get a response or you'll get a super sarcastic one. I taught myself everything in this class but I was honestly okay with that because I don't like to go to lectures anyway. Google, your Lab TAs, quizlet, her slides, and her adaptive quizzes will be your best friends.
Professor Herrick's class is disorganized and hard to follow. Lectures are boring, full of tangents, and rarely helpful for exams. She is condescending when reviewing questions and you'll end up teaching yourself. BEWARE OF POST LAB QUIZZES!! As professor Herrick says “be prepared to get a C.” Terrible class and even worse professor.
If you do not need this class DO NOT take it. Lectures were not helpful at all, material is so confusing and Herrick is no help. Focus on lab, that will help your grade a lot. Consists of four exams and the exams have so much material on them. This class will tank your gpa.
Professor Herrick is probably one of the worst professors here. I highly recommend never taking her class, AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS! She's unhelpful, and doesn't care for how you do in her class. Her lectures consist of her rambling over a slide for 20 minutes, so I wouldn't even go. Final was super easy, just do flashcards and review the slides.
