Ugh! The class is pretty easy, but her tests are impossible. IMPOSSIBLE! Study hard, rotate attending class with friends who take notes and study group it. Go to toffice hours so she knows your face, but she doesn't actually help you learn
It is so monotone and boring. I feel like I am wasting my time when I am there. The book is not difficult to fallow, but lecture is brutal. Print the lecture notes form blackboard, you'll be happy you did.
Not too sure what everyone else is talking about. The lecture is a little boring at times, but the class is interesting and if you read the book you will definitley get a B, if not an A on the tests. Susan Jarboe is so nice and she curves every test!! Not hard!
She's is a very boring and monotone teacher. However, everything is doable. The tests aren't that hard as long as you read the notes and study the book which is pretty easy after the first test. Doesn't take role but attendance is a must for notes
I rarely went to class. I basically read the book and studied notes off of blackboard and got an A. It's cool to help lighten your semester load. As long as your able to read and grasp theories there is no reason to waste your time being bored to death in lecture.
Hard class! But i had to take it. Flunked the last teacher but she is a lot easier. STUDY
Lectures were mono, but class was interesting. Need to come to class, and study book, which is pretty dam ez and to the point. Also you will learn something about what makes people to what they do.
Honestly I loved the class for the material, it was interesting. Not sure how anyone can pass a test. They are geared to make you doubt all of your answers. She has a lot of (none of the above, all of the above, A&C only,etc...) When the average on tests is between 30 and 35 out of 50 on tests it is not the students.
Class is interesting, but she's really boring and monotone, but her lectures help. Study lectures, read book, do online tests, you'll do ok on tests. Tests are hard they make you second guess yourself, but overall, not a bad class.
So...she does suck...and very boring, but I think she's better than let's say Spitzberg... Test are blah! I didn't read... I just read the notes and I got a C. So if you want a B or A you gotta do the work.
horrible class, tests are hard! she has a Phd so she expects you to know everything about com theory!you must go to class and make sure you take good notes, i got a B and i studied my *ss off. she makes a easy class very hard
she's sooo monotone she makes you wanna sleep in class..the only reason i did fine is cuz the material is interesting. her tests are tough cuz they do make u second guess all ur answers. but if u read the book, take all the online quizzes and study them till u know the answers, u should do fine on the test. lectures are a must.
OMG! So boring.. It was 430 in the afternoon in a huge lecture hall, and she dims the lights... Her voice is super monotone... All the elements to put you to sleep... I tried every day to stay awake in class, but found myself taking a nap every class session from 445-520. She's a nice lady, knows her stuff though.. She usually adds 5pts to tests.
Her voice is kinda boring but she lets you out early and the material itself is interesting. Tests are from notes and it's helpful to at least skim through the book. She's very approachable and understanding/willing to work with you. Overall, she's not bad.
THE MOST BORING INSTRUCTOR EVER!!!! I read, go to class & studied for the exam that I failed. She is so boring, monotoned & just wierd!! This class is miserable but I have to take it. I don't reccommend her as an instructor & I wouldn't reccommend the class unless you have to take it!
The material should have been interesting, however the prof makes understanding it hard. She is trying to teach terms, while using other terms that are way above our level to describe them. On the tests you can't even understand the question, much less answer it correctly. Its like she doesnt want you to pass the class! Don't take this teacher
She is very difficult. You really have to step up to the plate in order to do well. She rephrases everything, making it difficult to understand. But to be honest,if you cannot understand the english language very well, maybe you might want to become a math major or something.Come to class, study and you will be fine. She curves the tests as well.
Good luck! must go to class, read the book and take advantage of TA's office hours. If you can take another class, do so. I have no idea how this woman is still teaching. no assignments only 5 tests. Not cuml.
jarboe tries her best.posted lecture notes help, but easy material is made very difficult.I have read every chapter and skipped only 2 classes.i am a straight A student struggling for a C in this class. Passing this class with a D is a commitment.also she dims the lights which is really annoying.
This class is very boring, and can really be better learnt by just using her blackboard lectures and reading the book. Listening to her really does you no good. Study hard right away, read over each study guide at least 5-10 times, read, and do the online quizes, because a bad test grade will screw you in the whole class.
Four tests scantron, no EC. In ENS large lecture. Prof makes material difficult. Lecture notes online, buy book, skip class.
All comm majors must take this class, and she is only one who teaches it... One thing I can say- Shes really ignorant, and thinks shes some kind of intellectual.. READ THE CHAPTERS BEFORE CLASS! They are not that long.Read the, twice if you have trouble understanding.
This professor makes easy subject matter difficult. Read the textbook and study it instead of attending class... use what you get out of the chapters to fill in her lecture outlines that are provided on blackboard. This is a horrible class; good luck!
MONOTONE & BORING. She curves the final grade though...
Boring class but she is a reasonable person. Use the CD. You think you are going to fail but are presently surprised b/c of the curve. GO TO CLASS! She usually lets you out early.
Lectures are... wow. I never knew I could be so bored by something that I found so interesting when I read it in the textbook the night before. I skipped out on the lectures, read each chapter twice and outlined them, got an A. Focus on the text, it's well-written and to-the-point. Unlike her class.
She is very organized but she goes through the material way to fast. She is not helpful at all and does not care whether or not you pass the class. On the first day of class she said that she didnt want to know anyones names because she would not remember them. Her tests have nothing to do with the readings and they are very confusing! STAY AWAY!
The person that posted the ratings below this one is completely unreasonable. Of course she doesn't want to know names. There are like 300 students in the class. She completely follows the book, each lecture is on 1 chapter. It is difficult, so attend class and do all reading to pass.
Communication Theory in general is difficult. Most of the theories are about things we already know but with complicated names. Just go to class everyday, attend the study sessions with the GA and/or attend office hours. Read the book. Definitely. Dr. Jarboe is pretty funny if you listen to her and pay attention to the critiques of the theories!
Go into the class expecting to spend a lot of time studying and reading. I have a solid A and my advice is read each theory BEFORE class (chapters are very short) and then go to lecture to reinforce reading. This is totally cliche, but works wonders for this class. Tests are tricky but if you prepare you'll have no prob. She's nice and approachable
This class was the most boring communications class I have ever taken. Her lectures are out-dated, but at least they are on blackboard. Be ready to read and zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
worst class ive EVER taken. Jarboe is VERY knowledgeable about the material but its a class that needs to be taught in an interactive/hands on fashion. Her tests are unreasonably hard and sh gives NO slack! The clas is graded strictly on exams and even though I went to EVERY study session that her grad student Janelle held, i still did bad on exams
honestly this class was boring, but very easy. i went to every class and barely took notes and just was on my laptop the whole time.. myspace and aim. got a C+ with very little effort. she is very sweet and helpful! take her!!
Very interesting material presented in the most boring way possible. I studied like crazy and barely passed with a C. The tests are uneccesarily hard. It's hard to swallow the grade you get after studying so much. The book was very interesting. Too bad she is the only professor teaching this course. I'd run if possible.
Her tests are really hard. I would recommend always going to class and reading the chapters as she teaches them.
most of the lecture notes online, but you need to go to class to fill in the blanks. tests are difficult but not too bad. grade based on exams only, no Ex credit or assignments. Prof. Jarboe is a nice person, but can be a little bit boring, most of the time she's interesting though. i'm looking forward to her group interaction course in spring.
I just got a D in this class and i studied my A** off. No one else teaches it so just go into it knowing that it sucks. YOU MUST read all the theories before class or you will miss out on a lot of info she doesnt cover in class. Good Luck.
I went to 75% of the classes and the most helpful part was reading the book. split up the chapters with someone, read and outline them, do the practice quizzes online and just read and reread the notes you have and itll be an easy B or even A. I did that like 3 days before the tests and got an A-
Jarboe is not a bad teacher but anytime you have to teach theory its hell for students. Of course it doesn't help that she is boring. Class is difficult and more so if you don't read. BOOK IS KEY TO CLASS.
A lot of reading and memorization. Lectures are a bore and outdated (talks about the 70s TV series Mash for theory examples). Prepare to learn most of the theories on your own, use the internet to help explain them better.
boring. hard. outdated. ****. full of herself. boring. unnecessary method of handing out tests. take someone else if you can.
just boring. read the book before and it is MUCH easier. otherwise she will completely confuse you.
I received an A and this is only because my friends and I cheated on 3 of the 4 tests. The instructor is extremely boring, out of date, and cannot relate to her students. She's the only instructor for this mandatory class so really read the book b/c you can't count on her! A "B" is doable and chapters are short, but rereading is necessary.
read and memorize the book and you'll get a decent grade in the class. lectures are pretty boring but not too bad. she's alright as a teacher, i liked her most of the time. the tests are hard but just do the reading and she gives you all the info you need on blackboard
This class really isn't that bad if you read and listen well in lecture. Read the chapter BEFORE class and it will help you a lot. She gives you the basic outline of notes every time so you can follow along and add other info in. The tests are hard but if you study the material well, you can get an A.
I took this class two times second time almost as hard as the first. Pretty Much this class is terrible! I did all the readings two times over and still did very bad on the tests!!!!!!!!
She is awesome in a small class setting. 300 was boring but relational is soooo interesting and she has the best discussions. So much personable and fun. 3 tests, 1 paper. Take her!
take this class with a different professor. dont say i didnt warn you.
Yes, trust what my friend before me said. Unreasonable teacher with tests designed to trick you even if you study your ass off. The whole class is designed around multiple choice tests. Don't say I didn't warn you, either.
all multiple choice tests: they are hard. study, study, STUDY. Lecture was a waste of time, just read the book and study from that and you will be fine. If there is another professor you can take this class with, DO IT!
terrible! if there was another professor at state who tought this class, id say take em, but there isn't. tests are hard. questions are tricky. now i have to retake this class.
STUDY independently or in groups because lectures are useless and she is Boring! very knowledgeable of material but horrible at teaching it, therefore it's very hard to comprehend. Go on test days, she doesn't curve but she gives a "bonus exam" that only benefits you because they're like extra points. bottom line:hands down the worst professor ever
Horrible, horrible woman. Actually got excited when the class averate went from an F to a D-... Study groups are the best, completly fill out the lecture guidelines with lecture notes and from the book, online quizes, ect.. 6 tests + a 100 ques cumulative final (30+ theories covered). Taking this class with her made me want to change my minor.
This class is extremely boring!! You will not get away with just skimming over your notes before the test. Since there is no other teacher for this course, I recommend reading the text book closely and taking very good notes.
Very annoying and hard class with hard tests! There are like 30 theories/ chapters and a bunch of very confusing tests about them. Even when I read I still failed the tests. This class requires a lot of boring reading and studying! Grade based only on test scores. Final was accumulative
You HAVE to read the book and take detailed notes and if you understand what you read, you don't have to go to class. If you don't read the book and just go to class you will be confused. Just STUDY! people who complain about this class are annoying. IT IS COLLEGE! You are required to study and read if you want to do well! she is really helpful
I'm a slacker. THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR SLACKERS! This is the first class I studied for days in advance and I still failed every test (there are tests every other week). I got a D on 1 test. This class is ridiculously hard and boring. She is lame and there is just too much stuff on each test. The final is accumulative. 100 questions on 30 chapters!
I took the class this Summer and passed with an A, the advantages of taking it over summer is that there is a test every week, but she drops the lowest of all of them. The last test is not accumulative and she adds adds points to each test. I failed one test, and got a D on the last. I still received an A with an average effort
Worst class at state. Not only does she confuse you, but so do her tests. You can work your butt off studying for it and be totally prepared, but she WILL trick you with her questions on the test. This is the worst class at state. I spent more time working on this one class than all my others combined and still got a C.
This class is FREAKING hard! You HAVE to READ the book (but you use the older version of it). Attendance isn't neccessary if you can MEMORIZE every tiny detail in the book (which I doubt). She's not too bad, it's really just the class that is hard. She doesn't offer study guides. I recommend that you take less classes while taking this class.
I only went to class on test days, read the chapters the night before, and got a B. Not the easiest class at State, but not too bad. You just HAVE to read. Tip: use the book's website. it has practice quizzes and cross word puzzles to help you memorize the vocabulary.
You will hate this class. It's boring and overwhelming. Even when you think you know the info, the test proves differently. HOWEVER, Jarboe is nice enough to "adjust" grades and open note/book final. StUDY THE BOOK AND THE WORKSHEETS!!
This class is not the greatest. You might NOT want to take this class!
Absolutely horrible class. This semester has been the worst, by far. Her lectures are boring, the information she tests you on is nothing like what she lectures on or what she tells you in the review sessions. The book helps a lot, but the way she words her tests makes them damn near impossible. She's a horrible teacher... She doesn't teach.
6 tests and cumulative final on 30 chapters. A majority of the class will fail. Tons of homework and tricky tests! unfortunately the only instructor for this course. Very frustrating class.
I don't know why everyone avoids Jarboe...she's alright by my book. She's a little strange, but in a good way. Always has something interesting to say. It's a tough class because her tests are hard, but it's worth it to listen to her lectures
Gets personally offended if you ask a clarifying question in class. Goes through lecture notes at high speed and snaps "It's in the book!" if you ask her to slow down. literally only lectures out of the book.
Read the chapters, go to class, take notes. I see a lot of poor reviews, but seriously, this isn't Harvard! She's interesting, and tries to make relevant up 2 date comments in regards to the material. She's OK in my book, and makes a boring class more enjoyable..have u tried 350!? :(
Required class and shes the only teacher. 6 tests on 4 chaps each (drops lowest). 25+ chap open note cumulative final. not a super hard class but definitely NOT EASY. you must study. take good notes on all chapters. notes are straight out of the book so attendance is not required but helpful. Doesnt bump your grade up even if only couple points off
Worst professor at state. Difficult material - read the book (don't waste your time listening to her pointless lectures) Don't expect her to help you out at all - she won't respond to your emails. It's a pre-req .. Relieved I will NEVER have to take this class again!
The final cannot be dropped and was harder than her other tests even though it was open note. The beginning of the semester the tests were based on the book but then I think bc attendance was down she started testing on lecture. Outlines r provided. Office hrs r best. Lots of work!! But I'd take her again.
The class is easy. If you take notes of the lectures and use her study guides, you shouldn't have a problem. The exams are not as hard as she says they are, but the final is tricky.
Jarboe is one of the most by the book professors you will ever encounter. That being said, her class is fairly straight forward. Do the reading before class, go to lecture, and review that same night. Study hard and you will pass with a good grade. This is not an easy A class, nor should you expect it to be. It's college after all.
Worst professor ever. The way she talks is like nails on a chalkboard and her test questions are horribly constructed. Avoid taking her at all costs.
took her for 300 and 491. She is extremely knowledgeable and opinionated about everything. I cannot stand the way she lectures. She is very unclear about what she expects on tests. STUDY EXTREMELY HARD and then study some more. She makes her tests impossible for a reason. read the fine print in the bookSTAY AWAY
Go to class and take notes because she's basically deciphering the book for you. Gives unit notes with fill in the blanks, so she's pretty much guiding you on what you have to focus on. Not hard, but tests were lengthy and lots of material.
She is a pretty hard professor. Took her for Comm 300, because she is the only professor who was offered & her tests are extremely tricky! 4 tests (drops lowest of 4) and a Cumulative open NOTE final. I will definitely not be taking any more of her classes. Go to class and take the notes!! I didnt read the book at all and got a B based off lectures
Her lectures are interesting but they are not on the test. You basically have to know the entire book to pass her tests. I got a C on every test and an A on the final which is open note and ended up with a B in the class. Go to every class and take notes so you have them for the final. The final only helps your grade and she drops your lowest test
She's very difficult and the test questions are extremely ambiguous. Her lectures are almost painful because she talks as if she is the smartest person in the world and is theatrical with her voice. I got a C-. The only good thing I can say about her is she gave me extra points to pass instead of a D.
Her lectures can be very uninteresting. Her tests are also very hard, but you get to throw one away. My recommendations are to attend class and take expensive notes. Reading the chapters before class also helped greatly.
The class requires you read the book. Should be pretty obvious that her tests are going to cover the material she tells you to read. If you read the book the tests are manageable...not easy, but manageable. Not too helpful in class, but extremely patient and helpful during office hours
i never went to any of her lectures and just read the book and i managed to get a B in the class. The final is cumulative and you are allowed to bring your notes but notes hardly help because she asks about the craziest details that are only listed in the book.
DO NOT take this class. I attended every class, did the class readings, and still barely passed the tests with a C (with the curve) the class average for every test was around a 70% (with the curve) without the curve, the entire class average would have been an F. Just a heads up.
Must read ever chapter multiple times and study hard to pass. Test questions are random and not entirely based on the reading. Most questions are scenario examples with multiple answers that could be correct. Try to take this class in summer school or somewhere else!!
The tests were packed with like 9 chapters of content in each. The final was cumulative but open book (still not easy). She was not the easiest person to ask questions. This class is mandatory if you are a comm major so you kind of just have to suck it up.
Steer clear of Jarboe for COMM 496. Run away
Its a hard class, but its interesting. You'll have to work for your grade. You can tell she is a very smart lady and that she is nice if you go to her office hours, but she could be a little more clear, or at least give you a hint, on what she wants.
She was not THAT bad. This class actually requires you to think and work-- like a normal college-level class. She is a very nice person and you visit her office hours she is so helpful. Don't worry about it if you have to take the class from her. I enjoyed the class very much.
Let's face it people, we are in college, this class is definitely college level. 4 tests and she drops 1. The final is cumulative but open book. Don't let that fool you though, the questions require critical thinking skills, so if you don't have that then oh well, sucks for you. However she does curve, so maybe you'll have a fighting chance.
Susan Jarboe is the WORST professor in COMM at SDSU. For those of you saying "this is college" well in college, professors shouldn't make it their job to deliberately trick and mislead students. Nothing was straight forward and her notes and book rarely was reflected in the tests. The worst prof ever. She's plain awful and deserves no praise.
Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever taken in my life. Her lectures are boring and don't really help you on the test. On test days you are given packets that are numbered out of order and don't correlate with the numbers on the scantron, so make sure you pay attention to that. Unfortunately, this class is a pre-rec.
Follow these 3 steps and you will get an A: 1) Attend class and write down all of the notes 2) Read the textbook chapter before each class and take notes as you read (chapters are ~10 pg each) 3) Actually study over the course of 2-3 days prior to exam. The tests are easy if you actually study with both the class notes and book notes.
She is solid professor who is very clear in her lectures and expectations. take notes in class and from the textbook The final is cumulative and open note, she drops your lowest exam, and she curved two exams. Class requires effort but is very reasonable and an A is very achievable. Tests can be tricky if you did not sincerely study, otherwise ok.
I think that she makes the material much harder to digest than it needs to be. I recommend putting the notes in your own words and simplifying the information for the purpose of taking the tests. She is helpful though and appreciates questions. Really a nice lady but can be irritating
First of all this class is kinda interesting. The tests are unbearable and very difficult to choose the right answer. She makes the questions ridiculously hard, her notes are a mess according to the powerpoint. She is one stuck up SOB , be prepared to work your ass for a C, doesnt matter how much you study for teh test, youll still barely pass
I defiantly agree with alot of the reviews written. The material in this class is interesting . But this teacher make it so hard it's stupid! i put so much effort and got a C ! She makes the questions on her test so hard it was annoying ! Sucks it was like that because the class was interesting.
Three words...USE THE BOOK. The only time I went to class was up until the first midterm (which I scored the lowest on). After that I focused my attention strictly on the textbook for studying and did much better on all of the tests. Did the extra credit and did well on the tests. Wound up with a B. Just study and you'll be fine.
Use the book is the best tip I can give you and study as much as you can to learn the material. It not easy but it easy to pass if you work at it. Lectures can be interesting she use resources that related to us like youtube, movie clips, etc but REMEMBER THE ONLY WAY TO PASS IS TO USE THE BOOK AND LEARN THE CONCEPTS.
HARD COURSE. You need the book, because the notes aren't enough. Summer Online Course leaves little time to go through the material - only one person bothered doing extra credit, because there just isn't enough time to cover everything. Impossible to get anything higher than a B in this course, and I transferred with a 4.00 GPA. Good Luck, kids...
Rapp reccommended I take this class over summer if I could afford it and I'm glad I did. It was very easy, the notes she provides was enough to get me through the course without the course reader. There were 4 tests covering about 10 chapters each test, bonus points were added and lowest dropped. The hardest was the cumulative final.
I took this class over summer and it was pretty easy. The person below who said they transferred with a 4.0 GPA.... community college is easy kids. Its not that hard to get an A or B (in summer) Do your work and your fine. 4 plus final one test is dropped
Listen up, take this class online. I took it during summer and it was not that bad. I believe it is WAY easier than a full semester course. The person below who said it is an impossible B, and they have a 4.0... well community college is easier kids. Take online, easy B. 4 test and one final, lowest test dropped.
Her tests seem like they are made to trick you. I study hard and even when I know the answer to a question, her answer choices are too close in definition... She claims you have too choose the best one but she just says the same thing in different words. She is not very good at explaining herself either and acts mad when someone asks her a question
Avoid her at all costs! Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Her main goal is to trick you on EVERY test! From the way she words the questions to the way she numbers the test questions. She's also a bit rude and snobby whenever you ask her a question. I highly recommened that you dont waste your time in her class!
No joke this is the hardest professor at SDSU. The exams are all trick questions with near definition answer choices. The final is open notes, but 80 of the questions are trick questions. Her lectures are very boring and she is does not like to answer students questions. The bad part is that she's the only one who teaches comm 300 every semester.
I tend to think most of the reviews about Professor Jarboe are a little harsh. I did genuinely enjoy the content of this course. However, I do agree that the tests are really tough. Questions are very specific. Studying the lecturesnotes AND textbook is really important. It's very tough to get an A and don't expect to get it without the textbook.
You know that 1 class that you take that you complain and stress about the entire semester, this is that class. The material is simple, but Jarboe for some reason finds it necessary to turn this easy class into an ambiguous warfare of confusion on test. You will devote your life to her class, and get C. Her final is brutal, I wish you luck.
A lot of you are going to read all the comments about Dr. Jarboe's class, and get freaked out. Don't! It's a straight forward class, the only reason people write negatively about this class is because they weren't spoon fed an A. This is college, and if your mentality is "C's earn degrees," then you've already lost. Put in the effort to earn an A.
Horrible professor. I refuse to take another course with her. She tricks you with her exam questions and gets off topic constantly. 4 exams total with 1 dropped. Final is cumulative which is ridiculous but she does allow for open notes. No assignments and attendance is not mandatory.
READ THE BOOK - It's actually very interesting and you need to read to do well on exams. I read the book and did not attend class much and got A's on the test. Read read read. I learned at lot from THE BOOK. Not so much Jarboe. Read the power points as well.
This is a comm THEORY class... even though a lot of things seem self-explanatory, there are theories behind them (like how Psychology phenomena is self-explanatory, but there's still research behind it). So it will be a bit harder than other comm classes. YOU need to put in effort of going through PowerPoints and reading.
I took Jarboe's COMM120 class at Grossmont during the summer and it was very stressful! A total of 9 Assessments, 4 test (including final), and an oral presentation in 4 weeks. This class was interesting and if I would have taken in during a regular semester I probably would have enjoyed it more. Take this class but do not take it during summer!
Everyone is under the impression that Prof. Jarboe is a really tough teacher, but she's really not that bad. Her tests are a bit confusing because she words them weird and has a lot of "not" questions, like "which one is not a...". But if you do the chapter readings and the section notes, you can get a high B or A.
Wouldn't recommend taking her. If you do expect very difficult tests. She doesnt really teach the material very well. She does curve and drops your lowest test but even then its pretty rough. Just be ready to learn the material on your own.
If you're a Comm major, you must take Comm 300 with Jarboe. Tests can be ambiguous but once you bomb the first exam, you'll figure out a better study method. I did much better when I stopped going to class! Make an outline of the "LEARNING OUTCOMES" in her PowerPoint slides and read the book. You'll fail if you don't. Good luck!!!
The class is difficult, I'm not going to lie BUT it is completely do-able. If you read the book in depth and outline it and then go to class and listen to the lectures you can do well in the class. Once I realized this at the end of the semester I went from getting C's on the tests to getting high A's. The key to passing the class is determination.
Long lectures, her tests arent what you talk about in class so technically you have to read the whole book by the end of the semester.
I absolutely LOVE Jarboe. I took her for Comm 245 and then the following semester for 350. She doesn't hold your hand but if you ask her questions she is more than willing to help and super nice when you approach her individually. Read and pay attention in class to do well on tests. Hardly anyone goes so that's why her test averages are so low.
Her lecture style can be confusing so make sure to read the book. Her tests aren't easy; they really test your comprehension of the theories so take good notes and go to her office hours for clarification on concepts. For the open note final, study but most importantly organize all of your notes so they're easy to go through.
I've never worked so hard for an A- in my life but it was worth it. I hated Jarboe after the first exam but once I figured out how to study for her tests, I ended up doing very well throughout the class. READ the book and study the learning outcomes at the beginning of her PowerPoints to make sure you have a solid understanding of them.
If you hate most material in this class, it's ok! The point of this class is to expose you to different schools of thought in the Comm field so you can decide what you like. Her tests are difficult because they are not definition/answer questions; they require you to think. However she provides many resources to help you succeed on the tests.
I think a lot of people are blowing the class out of proportion. Yes it is hard, but you can pass. Reading the book is essential and understanding the concepts rather than just knowing definitions is the key to doing well on the test. Also Dr. Jarboe is very kind and does offer extra credit as well.
This teacher was not clear with her expectations on group projects to the point where the whole class was confused on her directions for the projects. Also she did not allow anybody to meet with their groups during class time which made scheduling difficult. I got a good grade but I really had to work for it.
