GREAT teacher but hard tests without a curve.
One of the most enthusiastic and nice profs out there.
Excellent teacher. Fair grader. All material taught in class.
What can I say? great professer. I didn't attend class often, but I must say she is very clear and quite funny in a whimsical kind of way. You'll enjoy the class, even if you think it's absolutely useless like me.
Difficult to get an A pretty easy to get a B. Every Dept has a great prof she is defeinetly one of the best bio lecturerers. She knows her material and conveys it well. She is humorous and very fair.

Everyone but me loves her. Tries to make a horrible subject interesting, and fails. You must be able to recite every detail in intimate detail, there is no understanding just memorizing. Other professors who teach this course attempt to relate the facts t
Great 1B teacher but only teaches on spring and fall...definately should wait to take her class.

great teacher...open to questions and explains the topic very well..tests are pretty easy but the lab portion of the class is what probably drags your grade down
Excellent professor and lecturer. Very kind and funny. Genuinely expresses interest in her students' understanding. Not the easiest class, but she makes it easier than would another professor.
I love this professor! She is amazingly funny and interesting. Kinda reminds me of the mom from home improvement. Definitely knows her stuff and wants to share it. Perfect bio teacher.
A great lecturer. Gives good lively examples and helpful demonstrations to help you visualize the organisms. Midterms can be tricky but are not too bad. If given the choice, definitely take 1B from Keen!!
I love this class.
Great teacher!! Gives excellent lectures, very clear, but TONS of info to remember. Impossible to memorize everything, but somehow she makes you know more than you think you could. Lab is essential. Tests are okay, just study.
Great lecturer! She knows what she's talking about. Very enthusiastic about the subject. Tests are not too hard (if you study, that is). Always willing to help: before class, after class and during office hours.
She's Great! She is one of the best teachers in Davis. Makes lectures interesting and is friendly. She will answer your questions if you have any.
One of the best classes I've taken at Davis. She makes everything clear, which is good because there's a lot of information to take in. She has a sense of humor and is totally willing to help students out. If you have to take BIS 1B, take it from her.
Incredible teacher, clear, concise, and her joy for biology transfers to the learning experience. The magnitude of information to remember can be overwhelming, but the tests are fair. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
i have to agree w/ the others: she's the first science professor i've encountered in Davis that i actually like and enjoy going to class to hear. She's concise, cheerful, and enthusiastic as one could be about basic animal biology.
great professor. her midterms are fair. you dont have to get A's on your midterms to get an A in the class, but you have to do well in lab. the lab manuel is a very useful resource for studying, especially for the animal phylas section.
Great teacher, really seems to enjoy teaching as well as helping people with issues in the learning center or office hours - highly recommend her in the future!
BESTEST TEACHER @ UCD!!
hilarious!
she's super nice like an aunt... she has crazy curly hair but super bright blue eyes... thats why I added the chili... the class is cake.. its not half the course that EVE100 is so beware
very good teacher
There aren't words to explain how wonderful Dr.Keen is!She's knowledgable, funny, and is SO willing to help her students in any way possible. The class is fascinating in and of itself, and she only adds to it!Make sure to study-there's a ton to take in!
One word: AWESOME! Best teacher I've had since 5th grade. She is superb. Great lectures, very very interesting. Loves her subject matter and it shows. Would recommend to everyone! Good tip is to study old midterms because they are very similar to actual
im probably not passing the class, but its probably b/c i never went to class. im a lazy bum. but she does teach well, going to class and getting classical notes and studying from the lab book will probably guarantee you a c/b. but i'm just a bum
I heard she was easy, but learned the hard way that the class wasn't as easy. GO TO CLASS!! she isnt a very good lecturer, and the tests are hardd if you dont study...study hard!!
Great teacher, my fave at UCD. Very helpful. Tests are fairly easy just lots of memorizing. First test harder then the rest. Old tests on reserve at the library were extremely helpful in figuring out what she tests and how. She truly cares about students
Very excellent teacher!! Got a D on 1st midterm but ended up with an A in class. Had to work very hard to do that though. Take advantage of all the resources she gives(study Q's, sample tests). Very clear lecturer. Try to learn material, not memorizing.
i can't even think put anything negative about keen because she is just awesome. she teaches VERY well and she wants to help you alot! she doesn't reuse her old test but you can learn how she formats them.
EXCELLENT teacher! Probably the best I have had at Davis. Her energy makes students excited to come to class. Teaches only the needed material and is always there to help students.
BEST teacher ever. Tests are FAIR. She definitely cares about the students and is always helpful. She's everything a big-lecture-hall prof. should be. I thought zoology would be the worst class ever but she made it SOOOO fun!!!
everyone rants and raves about what an awesome professor keen is, but personally, i couldnt tell why. she definitely has a great command over subject material, but she speaks way too fast and jumps from topic to topic, making it easy to get info confused
Bad lecturer.Extremely unorganized when teaching and writes random stuff on the board all over the place.Talks too fast and shows slides after slides on the projector making it very easy for people to snooze out.But she tries hard in her teaching.
Better start reading the books and going to lectures. Her test are quite challenging, but there are old exams online, so it is not so bad if you STUDY and practice. Her lectures were fun, but sometimes she goes a little too fast.
Great class!! Tha labs are kinda bumb, but really fun. She is a GREAT teacher, top notch! Really. Even if you don't like bio, this class is awsome. The tests are easy and she wants every one to do well. There is a lab final at the end, watch out, it kinda sucks if you havn't been paying attention
She is the best teacher I have had so far at Davis. You have to take her if you need BIS 1B
wat's wrong w/ these people? lol horible class w/ stupid animal stuff
Great teacher, tests are relatively eaassy the lab is a huge waste of time though. Something about her that makes her HOT!
Keen is probably the BEST prof I have encountered so far in Davis. Her energy is just so awesome, and the class is never boring. Labs though are sometimes boring, but that's ok cause she makes up for it in her lecture. Take her if you can, cause it'll be the best decision you'll make at UCD.
I wouldn't day she's the best lecturer ever. But she does have a passion for the subject, and that's nice.
Exams are easy, labs are useless. She covers A LOT of material in lecture, which keeps it interesting, and the tests only skim the surface, so you have to be able to pick out the important stuff in lecture. take notes, GO TO CLASS!!! and make a cladogram. She is really nice and wants you to do well.
I wouldnt say exams are easy. There is alot of material to cover in such a short amount of time. Class is basically all memorization- no concepts. Labs are boring and useless!...lectures are fast paced but clear. I would say one of the best professors but you MUST work hard and study ALOT.
best prof in the sciences ive had. Expects alot from you but but is a very clear lecturer (thought she speaks quickly) and makes every effort to help students. She records every lecture and puts it online and ties the lecture in realy well with the lab. Best Prof ever
Amazing!! Not only is she very clear in what she wants you to know and articulates it well, but she has some really fun stories about her personal experience with things relating to the stuff you're learning. She's fun, understanding, and just amazing!
The real question here is, why would you want to take 1B with anyone else?
Best prof I've had @ UCD, why would you want to take bio1b with anyone else? Lectures are interesting most of the time, though labs can be boring, but it does emphasize your memor.about the materials. stufy and you'll do fine on tests, didn't really have to read the book, just go over the notes.
she is possibly the best lecturer i have ever had, her tests are really straight foreward and like the practice. great teacher
the best teacher i've had at UCD by far. she actually made me want to go to class and not complain about it. she's a very good lecturer, understands the material, very clear and coherent, and enthusiastic about the subject. great professor.
take her for 1B! her tests can be a little challenging - LOTS of info, but that's more the subject. Very clear and helpful. Very funny! Reviews for both midterms and final, though maybe not as extensive as some may prefer. I loved the class!
Keen is an awesome professor. She definatly knows her material and is always willing to help to and make lectures interesting with her examples. Her midterms are very fair but the finals was a little challanging. A lot of material to know. Take Keen! Shes the best! I have much respect for her.
not as great as every one says. Still have to put in 110% to get an A. No curve in the class at all.
Dr.Keen is the reason I'm going into veterinary medicine. Her class is fun, stimulating, and incredibly interesting. She is so knowledgable, and her examples and stories are hilarious! They really help to cement the material in your head. She's fair, and is more than willing to help.I recommend her!!!:)
I want to take this class again!
doesn't curve but GREAT LECTURER! probably the best lecturer you'll ever get. very interesting and funny.
Ok unlike the posts mentioned above Keen is one of the best BIO 1b teachers, but you have to put in a LOT of time and effort into the class. She has every resource available to you, very helpful in the office hrs, opens the BLC, and will promptly answer any email. Just remember PUT IN THE EFFORT
She is the best prof I have had at UCD. Great lecturer. If you keep up with the material, her test are very fair. The class is not impossible, and it's totally worth it because she is so awsome.
don't bother buying the book.al you need is ur lab manual. i went from a D to an A- by the end of the quarter. i got more B+s than A-s on my tests and still ended up with an A- so don't give up hope if you do poorly on your first midterm.first midterm is really hard but after that is smooth sailing

Lively and interesting lectures. You don't need the book; her exams are based off lectures. Just be sure to study a bit everyday and don't leave things til the last minute.
If you have to take the class, get this teacher. No curve, but many resources available to help you do well on tests, so curve is not needed. Interesting lecturer, and just overall good.
Dr. Keen is definitely one of the best professors at this university however that does not mean it is an easy A. You still have to work your butt off and keep up with every single lecture because at least one thing from each lecture shows up on the tests. Great but DEFINITELY NOT EASY!
The BEST teacher at UCD!
Keen's great. Interesting class, she's great at teaching it.
Keen reminded me why I was a bio major. She is probably the best lecturer at UCD, and I loved her class. I waited two quarters to take the class with her, and it was well worth it.
Her lectures are like hot-selling concerts. Lecture hall is filled up with students very quickly once the previous class ends. When she starts talking, entire class is quiet. Interesting and educative jokes every lecture. Bio is so fun because of her and the tests are just like practice tests!! Trust me, you wouldn't want to skip any of her class.
really cool and fun and nice... but the class is really hard. I knew everything from the lectures but somehow i still did really bad. the lectures are great, but she has problems with the overhead. A lot of people thought she was a great teacher, but in my case i would have had a lot more fun if grades didn't matter.
Stay on track by keeping up with lab quizzes, you'll most likely do just fine on tests. Keen knows her stuff, very willing to help, and put together most of the lab activities. Just keep up with the work and you'll do fine. Tests are fair, she puts up VERY similar practice exams on the library website. Study those and you'll ace her tests.
All you need to do is study the notes. Her test is 99% the notes. If you are a logical person it should be an easy A.
Dr. Keen is THE BEST EVER. She is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and articulate. She is definitely one of the best lecturers at UCD and you will not regret taking her. Now even though she's really good, it is definitely not an easy A, unlike the post below me. You need to work your butt off and go get help when you need it. Dr. Keen marry me!
she's a pretty good professor overall. lectures can be boring tho. like when she shows slides i fall asleep every time. it's a challenging course so you have to study pretty hard, but her grading is fair. i got D's on both midterms, a C+ on the final and somehow managed to pull off a B- in the class. but i did pretty well on the labs tho.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. She's very clear and obviously very into what she teaches, which makes class more enjoyable.
Wonderful teacher! Truly cares about you learning the material, and is very helpful in office hours. Recommended that you do the old tests found online, they're very helpful and just like the acutal tests. Interesting class, highly recommended.
The Dr. Keen is THE best professor I have had at UC Davis. I love her!!! She knows the material really well. Do not miss lecture. She is soo organized that u dont even need to buy a book for this class. Take advantage of the BLC. Take the labs seriously. Go through all the stations. This is a hard class but keen makes this boring class really fun.
She's great. Great lectures, great attitude, great explanations of the material. Her tests are not so bad. If you pay attention in lecture you'll never have to read from the book.
Dr. Keen is truly the epitome of a great professor. She makes lecture fun and really cares about her students. If you want to be interested in biology, take her class.
This was a great class - if you want to learn the material, Keen is the best professor for you. Just stay on top of the information and you can do well on the exams.
Absolutely WONDERFUL teacher. She really cares about her students and helping them do well, plus makes the class very interesting. Take advantage of all the resources you're given, and do all the practice tests. Challenging class, but you won't get a better professor than her.
loved lectures... just a whole lotta material that can become overwhelming, this class takes a lot of time and effort, but shes a great teacher!
Best professor I have had at UCD. She cares about her students more than any professor I have had and it shows. She goes out of her way to make sure that her lectures are clear. If you make the effort it is easy to do well.
she is really good teacher, just make sure you pay attention in class and lab and getting an A is kinda easy, but you still have to study :)
Keen makes a UC education worth the money. Lectures were interesting and lots of cool visuals. Labs were pretty enjoyable as well. But to get good grades means lots of memorizing and paying good attention in labs. The TA's are all very helpful- make sure you use BLC hours. =)
Keen is possibly the best teacher I have ever had. Just memorize memorize memorize. To be honest you don't need the book because she does such an awesome job in lecture. Keep up with all of the material, and try to get through lab...it is rather dry, but some are interesting. She is the best!
Pretty easy class. DON'T bother to buy the textbook. She even says that you don't need it. Just memorize all of the concepts and examples from lecture and the summaries for each phyla and class in the labs, and you will be fine. Lectures are kind of boring, BLC is a big help, she is a good teacher and fun to talk to in office hours.
If you have a problem, need help, or just feel lost, TALK TO DR KEEN! She is very nice, she cares about her students, and she has faced almost every problem before. Pick her brain...she knows a lot about a lot.
Class has a lot of material. Keen is very helpful. Her test are fari. The free responses questions almost always come from discussion section. Know how to do them and know how to explain the concepts. Lab is boring too but u will need to know what is going on for the lab practical
I have a lot of respect and admiration for Dr. Keen. She is truly the best. Her lectures are great, office hours are extremely helpful, and she truly really does care about her students. Awesome professor and phenomenol woman. :)
Dr. Keen is a wonderful professor. She is extremely knowledgeble about the subject matter, and she is one of the most caring professors I've had at UCD. She's the best you'll get for BIS 1B.
One of the few truly caring teachers at UCD. She's very concerned w/ the students and is very helpful. Be prepared to work hard for your grade!
Absolutely love her. She's the best teacher at UCD that i've known so far.
Keen was the worst teacher I had at Davis. She is unfriendly, unhelpful and rude!
I don't get why people write such good reviews about Keen. Damn you all for persuading me to take bis 1b with this teacher. Her tests are much harder than the other 3 common bis 1b teachers with lectures that seem to make each midterm to be a peice of cake. They are not, and I have 5 people that can testify to this.
She won the teacher of the year award for being an awesome teacher. DO THE MATH! TAKE KEEN
She is a great teacher, very entertaining lectures, completely loves what she does and it shows. she uses props and her own body to demonstrate how other living organisms work. she's funny, enthusiastic and the tests would seem hard if you didnt do the 5-6 old exams which are exactly like the ones she gives.
do not buy the book for this class unless you are really hardcore about bio. i paid a lot of money for that book, never touched it, and i wasn't even able to sell it back at the end of the quarter because a new edition came out. lecture material is all you need to pass the class.
One's inability to sell back a textbook should not influence that person's take on a class. Keen is a great teacher because she pays attention to the needs of her students by talking to us like we are adults, and giving us what we need to do well in the class. I really appreciate her sense of humor, and would never take an "easier" professor for 1B
She's the best prof I've had so far. Her lectures are interesting, clear, and often entertaining. The labs are helpful, but you have to make sure to keep yourself on track. She hands out packets and worksheets so you won't need the book. The tests aren't that bad, and there isn't as much material to memorize as in 1a. Keen is a great teacher.
I didn't find the material interesting at all, but as a professor she is fun and teaches well. You can easily get away with using the textbook on reserve since she had so many handouts. The information we went over was pretty basic, but you need to know it solid to get a good grade. I also looked through the new textbook--theres nothing really new.
great. just great. thats all you need to know
Fantastic Professor. Her enthusiasm for the subject is contagious and even if you're not interested in the material she'll still make it entertaining. She has funny stories and comments about things that you can't help but smile at. She even took the time to talk to me and my friends after lecture...very easy to talk to and very approachable!
She is a really good lecturer and tries to keep biology interesting with fun anecdotes/facts. She was the most helpful professor I have met during office hours.
Took her with Dehesh. Go to class for clicker points, if provided. Go over lecture notes and lab manual. Professor Keen is nice and fun and really knowledgeable about the subject. Overall, decent class.
She is very enthusiastic about biology. She gives out clicker points as extra credit and has extra credit on exam. However, her tests are harder than Dehesh's :( make sure you ask what the questions mean if you get confused!
Great professor, makes sure you totally understand before going on in lecture. Little boring in class, but if you go, she's a good teacher.
She is a great lecturer. Promotes keeping students involved during lecture, is very good at explaining complex thoughts, and has fair questions on the exams. Great professor for BIS 2B
Had her with Donald Strong (AVOID DONALD STRONG AT ALL COSTS) and she was tremendously better at getting the point across. Really nice person, crystal clear, and her lectures are actually biology based in comparison to Strong's nonsense syntax and treating you like a kindergarten student. She's a really nice person and is more than willing to help.
Great professor. Very clear when lecturing and is willing to answer all questions students ask. Extremely helpful in office hours. Exams are fair. Does a great job in stimulating students' interest, thought, and discussion on the subject. Made biology intriguing. You must take Keen's class for biology.
definitely not as animated as dehesh (i took them together), BUT still very nice & responsive to questions. goes at a pretty manageable pace through slides. lots of extra credit. :) tests were easier than 2B. willing to clarify points during lecture. overall, good quality & do recommend.
Keen was great! Her explanations were clear and she was always willing to answer questions in class. Her tests were very fair. Lots of extra credit which is very helpful! I definitely recommend taking her class!
PHENOMENAL teacher! For someone with lecture-hall narcoleptic tendencies, I never fell asleep during her lectures. Love how she teaches like she's holding a conversation with you rather than simply reading off the slides. Hope I get another class with her.
Keen is a very clear and engaging professor. Her lectures are very interesting, and she expands greatly on her PowerPoints, unlike some teachers.
Dr. Keen has an eloquence when speaking about biology no other teacher possesses. She is able to make the silliest forms of life seem so interesting. Tests are extremely fair, and she tells you EXACTLY what you'll need to know for it. She presents a welcoming environment for asking questions or further studying. HIGHLY recommended!
Excellent, intelligent professor. She works you hard but everything on her tests is something she covers in class. Read the textbook to review, follow along in lecture, and do clicker questions. She has a real passion for teaching and sharing knowledge.
I love Dr. Keen. she is such a nice professor. I went into 2c thinking it will be terrible as everyone i know kept telling me. Dr. keen made the class so interesting and pretty easy to get an A in.
She is a great professor! Very clear and if easy to understand. For studying her podcasts are very helpful, pay attention and class and study her slides and you'll do well. Tests can be tricky sometimes...
Pretty good lecturer and really responsive to questions. Does her best to convey the information and make sure everyone understands it. Go to office hours if you need help and you should do fine. Her tests can be tricky but if you understand the material you should be able to figure it out. Overall I would highly recommend her.
Fantastic, friendly professor! Lectures are really clear and easy to follow, clicker questions for extra credit. Genuinely invites questions and enjoys interacting with her students, which is rare in a 500+ lecture hall. Would love to take a course with her again! I wish she was teaching BIS2C next quarter! Tests can be tricky but still fair
Keen is a great professor! She really enjoys teaching and you are able to easily see this when she tells stories during her lectures! She is an approachable professor and extremely helpful during office hours! Test were easy since she gave a lot of practice questions. Just re-listen to the podcasts after lecture and you should get an A!
Clear and enthusiastic lectures. She engages the whole class, so it's easier to not daze off. Answers all student questions very well. One of my best bio teachers ever.
Dr. Keen is probably one of the best professors I've had thus far. Her lectures are very clear; I never had to open the textbook! Exams were relatively easy and straightforward, just study the study guides and lecture notes. Recommended!
One of the best professors I've had in Davis. I knew nothing above the basics of genetics and came out the class wanting to minor in it. Not the easiest midterm but definitely not impossible. Always asks the students if they understand everything before moving on and always makes topics clear. Take her if you can!
Great professor overall. VERY CLEAR. Very understanding. Lectures are engaging. Exams are challenging - but not impossible. So study hard, and you will do well! Make sure to look over her practice problems/exams. Most importantly, study her *LECTURE NOTES* (tables, charts, etc.) carefully - they DO reappear on her exams!
Keen is obviously in love with what she teaches, and she tries to bring that passion to her students too. Her lectures are very clear, but they move quickly so do the reading beforehand. If anything doesn't make sense, go to her office hours - she goes out of her way to explain things to you, and give you interesting real world examples!
She is an excellent professor and very passionate about what she teaches! her excitement is infectious, and you will learn much from her! She is an excellent bio teacher!
Great professor! Very clear and passionate about the subject. If you listen to the podcasts and go through lecture slides before the tests, you'll do fine. The exams are fair and everything you need to know will be gone over in lecture.
She is very nice, extremely clear and a fair tester. Make sure you print her slides and take notes on them, because they don't have much info. She also gives out lots of extra credit points so make sure you do those!I would definitely take her again :)
I'm surprised at how highly Dr Keen is rated. She is a mostly competent lecturer, but often frustrating in the disconnect between the way she presents material and the way she tests it. Her lectures are often devoid of information, and they are poorly timed and paced. She is enthusiastic, but do not mistake this for being highly qualified.
Helpful during office hours, but awful lecturer-slides all over the place. tries to do visual-oriented explanations but not very effective sometimes. Fair exams, LOTS of info and details to know. 2 midterms, 1 final. Graded Quizzes mandatory, and there are also class participation clicker bonuses. Material is easy, but work load is a lot sometimes.
Good, clear lecturer (lots of pictures and examples) posts podcasts and lecture slides. Offers extra credit plus study questions and practice exams. Tests were super easy (i got a 97% on the last midterm). She funny and easy to listen to. Definitely take her if you can!
I absolutely loved this class (taught with Professor Dehesh). They were both amazing lecturers, which made the class even more interesting. This class isn't a lot of work, but do the study questions and review the slides. Know your material and you'll be good for the midterms! If you work for it, the A is attainable!
Professor Keen is simply amazing! She goes out of her way to help her students! I failed Bis 2B because my teachers were awful. This made me fearful of taking Bis 2C however Keen and Dehesh made the class so interesting and doable! I got an A in this class so I couldn't be happier!
Keen is extremely clear in her lecture organization. Midterms highlighted the key points, there never was really any surprises. Most of the material you need to know is in lecture, the book is more so supplementary. Attend class, take notes, and study for the quizzes and you should be fine!
I do not agree with many of the previous views. She is, at best, a decent lecturer. I personally favored Dehesh. The main problem is the course, not the professor. I would say only about half the material is useful, and the other half is just memorizing trivia. Half of the class is memory based whether or not they admit or are allowed to admit it.
She is very enthusiastic but many of the topics she explains require more than simple hand gestures. Very time consuming class to get a good grade but super easy to barely pass. In my opinion to get a good grade (assuming you are of average innate intelligence) you have to put so much time in to this class at the cost of your other classes.
She's alright as a lecturer but still not enough for me to see what the hype is all about. It was confusing when she was taught phylogeny because it was basically a waving laser pointer (no "do it on paper" examples). For animals it was hard bc I've never seen most of these animals and thus extremely hard to imagine most of the descriptions.
Professor Keen really goes out of her way to make sure her students understand the material. Her lectures are crystal clear, she is always willing to go out of her way to help students, and she actually cares about your grade. Her tests questions were pretty tricky, but she has lots of practices tests and questions to help you out.
I came into the class having decent expectations because of all the great reviews for her. This course overall isn't very useful 70% of it is pure memorization of trivia facts however the other 30% is essential to bio majors. Do ALL extra credit. She definitely is super passionate but she gets really confusing (uses WAAAY too many pronouns).
Keen's lectures I thought were pretty good and informational, because she reads straight off of them. This class was almost 80 percent memorization so just memorize and you will be fine ( you really do have to know the nitty gritty details). Her portion of the tests were fine and there is always one question that comes from the practice questions
terrific professor. knows what she's talking about.
Keen and Dehesh are both very good instructors for BIS2C. The class was based off of 500 points, with 45 ex points possible. Probably the best teachers one could have for BIS2C. They podcast the lectures, which is a semester saver.
Clear, interesting, and well-outlined lectures. Posts her slides and podcasts online. She is very friendly and helpful in office hours, and she really cares about her students.
so amazing, clear, interesting, inspirational, hilarious and soooo cute!! wish she was my aunt or something! Class is really hard and there's a LOTTT of material the lab practical is impossible but the professors do their best to help you out.
Great professor, hard class. I enjoyed her lectures more than Dehesh's. She was very clear and was an effective communicator. But beware this class is no joke. It's a lot of work.
Dr. Keen was an amazing professor. All her lectures were clear and it was obvious she cared about her students. Definitely take advantage of her office hours! She is so helpful and passionate! If you go to class and go over her podcasts/lecture slides, you'll do perfectly fine! I would highly recommend taking her class!
Keen was a bit more ambiguous and confusing than Ledford, especially her clickers, but nonetheless was still a great professor. Lectures weren't mindblowing but did provide all the info you need. Definitely take lab seriously because it'll help you understand concepts from lecture. No curve but plenty of E.C.
Dr. Keen is kind, personable, intelligent, and accessible outside of class. She answered anyone's questions with patience and respect. The only thing is, her slides were not very well organized. While I enjoyed her lectures, taking notes during them was a bit of a struggle for me. Still, I would take her class again because she was so helpful.
Dr. Keen taught this class with Ledford. Her lectures were a little harder to follow than his; slightly disorganized. But she is really responsive to questions, gives straight answers, and uses visual demos to show processes. She posts practice midterms and questions, too. She is really nice and a solid choice overall!
Her lectures are a bit unorganized and can be hard to follow especially since she goes off on tangents of things not relevant for tests/assignments. She's very knowledgeable just unclear with the presentation. Her tests aren't too bad but studying can be difficult as the notes are usually kind of all over the place.
i took this class with keen and ledford, and i def liked ledford's teaching style and presentations much more. keen's ppts can get a bit disorganized or confusing but overall isnt too bad. her study guides are a good representation of what to expect on the midterms. a great professor overall!
Her lectures are a little disorganized and it feels sometimes like random information is being thrown at you. I personally was aggressively uninterested in memorizing random facts about random organisms but the content isn't entirely under her control. If you study the content mentioned in lecture, the tests aren't too bad.
She seems nice and wants you to help understand the material. But her lectures were a bit unorganized. Her slides were hard to follow. Lectures were also really dry and boring I only went for the clicker points. She would go over stuff that was irrelevant to the class. One good thing was that she provided a lot of study material for exams.
Professor's good. Midterm too many questions. Avoid TA Josephine Hubbard AT ALL COST!!! The total score for the whole class is 500. And if you score lower than 450, it's B. Lab score worths 150 points in total and it's all graded by the TA. Hubbard always grades unreasonable harsh and makes the average of her section much lower than other sections.
I loved Dr. Keen! She is so friendly and really passionate about the material. She truly cares about her students and always encourages questions if anyone is lost. Lectures are engaging and she makes the material seem so easy! Provides ample study questions/solutions and gives strong hints about what's actually on the test. 10/10 awesome prof!
Dr. Keen is truly amazing! You can tell she's not only passionate about the topic, but also passionate about teaching students. She explains everything very clearly, and tests are very straightforward. No trick questions. I'm not a big fan of bio, but the things she taught (and the way she taught them) were so interesting.
Took her with strong in spring 19 and she was the ONLY reason that I got an A-. She makes it clear in lecture what you need to know for exams. She posts practice questions that are similiar to test questions. Exams can be long but many of the questions are from in class examples so study practice questions and clicker questions to do well on tests.
I like Dr. Keen way more than Strong. Her questions on the exams make sense and she marks which lecture slides those come from. Her lecture slide could be a little disorganized but she is always welling to help.
I don't know how she has a high rating, maybe she's better in person, but online, she's highly contradictory and unclear -- she will make a statement and retract it minutes later, making it difficult to distinguish between what's true and what's not. Perhaps part of my disappointment is a result of Professor Ledford being an amazing, clear lecturer
Prof Keen seems so sweet and caring. She doesn't have the whole tech thing figured out yet, I feel so bad when tech does her dirty. Her slides can be a little confusing to look at, but her lectures aren't too bad. I feel like she has a lot of interesting stories to tell and she seems really passionate about the topic.
Keen was one of the lecturers for Fall 2020. Her lectures were often very dense but she did a good job delivering them in an interesting way. Her lecture slides could be better organized but they are much easier to decipher if studied along with the lectures. She is very clearly passionate about the content and is always relating concepts to life.
Why does she have so high score? A fast-talking woman, not care too much about whether you understand.
She slowed down, then could not finish content for each lecture. But that's better than rushing through and getting confused faces. Not deserved 4.5, maximum should be 3
Continue lecturing and do not care how many students experience power outage
A midterm took over a week for grading, and the graders were not our TAs because their contracts limited work time. Andreanna is a good & sweet TA and be in her sections if you can!
Midterms are graded for more than one week. Test heavy. Point-based. No curves. Very little extra credit. Professor Laci is better in lectures.
Professor Keen is very knowledgeable and provides a lot of information in her lectures, allowing students to dive more deeply into the material. She is very open to student questions and wants her students to succeed.
Biology 2 series have no curve, 458 out of 500 is A. Her slides were not organized and you need to go over after class carefully.
Unorganized lecture and slides. Way too much learning objectives for each lecture.
This class and the curve is just ridiculous. There is no curve. The midterms had way too many questions for such a short time period. I haven't learned much in this class because the lecture slides are so disorganized and not informative at all. The explanation for concepts are not very clear.
All of her lectures have a lot of take-home messages. The slides were not well organized. Robert is much better as he let us practice a lot of exam-like questions during lectures.
Dr. Keen's lectures were the farthest from engaging. She goes very slowly and has way too many words on her slides ( all just copied from the textbook). Don't buy the textbook you don't need it. Lab is super easy. Just read the slides and you'll get an A. She is also super unaccommodating it was actually appalling. Just avoid her.
No curve gives you no right to complain. 458/50091.6% Have you ever can get an A at 91.6%? Under standard grading, that is a A-. Your lowest HW and lab scores are both dropped. Her slides were disorganized, but were understandable if you spent a little time after class.
Dr Keen goes over the slides so fast. The slides have lots of texts, basically copied from the book. But she points out which parts are important. During the office hours, she is willing to help her students, but unfortunately sometimes she fails to do that. She seems to be just reading or just memorized the lecture content.
BIS 2B with Keen and Furrow. Furrow was amazing, but Keen wasn't one of my favorites personally. She's clearly knowledgable and provided VERY helpful review videos for exams but all of her lectures are very dense. Prior knowledge from AP Bio helped tremendously. If you haven't taken AP Bio, maybe avoid Keen. Furrow, however, is a solid choice.
I wasn't able to follow during the live lecture time and I watched the recording instead. She goes through various concepts at a faster pace and her presentation slides are very wordy and lengthy. It took me longer to understand her concepts however, she was still lovely to have as an instructor.
Keen is not the best lecturer but Furrow, who also teaches the class, is better at explaining. The lectures are very useful for the quizzes and exams. The midterms/final are on Gradescope and are not proctored on Zoom. One of the midterms had so many short answer questions and I ran out of time but other than that, the midterms weren't bad.
Taught with other 3 profs. Fairly easy homework and labs. Take some times on note taking and preparing before the test, then you will get a good score. Solid choice if you don't know some other profs that are better.
Not very understanding of personal situations and will not let you reschedule a testing date. i had a surgery scheduled for a day of a test and she recommended i drop the class or leave the school. i ended up having to take an incomplete, despite having given her plenty of notice of my upcoming surgery and asking to take the test another day
Keen is okay on teaching, but the ppt is kinda too wordy. If you can ever choose TA, avoid marina... She's too harsh on grading.
Dr. Keen is very clear during lecture and is always willing to answer questions, BUT her lectures aren't structured well and it seems like she doesn't focus on the overarching bigger picture of lecture. It's just hard to retain information from the way she teaches it. Might be someone else's learning style, definitely not mine.
Since the weather is so cold and rainy, I usually watch the recordings instead of going in person. I love her lectures, they are very interesting. However, I find it difficult to review from her slides so take careful notes to get good grade!
Dr. Keen was very good at presenting information to us. She's not the most engaging lecturer, nor were the slides as polished, but the lectures were solid and I never struggled to understand them. The only problem with the lectures was a somewhat distracting audio problem caused by her mask but hopefully that'll be fixed before next quarter.
Professor Keen is a solid teacher. This class was structured very reasonably and all the deadlines and assignments were made very clear. My only complaint was that her lectures had confusing slides and when they were more math heavy, she was not very good at explaining the concepts. Overall fine though.
She’s nice but her lectures are very hard to follow. She talks a lot about things and then says “ oh don’t worry about knowing that” and then jumps around to another very different topic. Her writing on the slides is confusing. Mainly the issue is that the lectures aren’t structured well so you get lost very easy.
If you want to understand anything , do not take Bis2b with Keen , even if there’s a second professor teaching. It’s impossible to learn from her lectures as they are basically what should be a simple concept twisted 7,000 different ways to confuse you.
I took her while she was teaching with another professor and I found myself dreading whenever it was her turn to present in lecture. Slides are super unclear and it makes note-taking very hard. You don’t really know what’s important or not in lecture and her sample exams weren’t really similar to the actual exams. Overall just v confusing
Cares a lot about her students, and often stays past lecture and office hours to help students with questions and concerns.Lecture heavy, but if you take good notes and review the slides you'll be fine. Provides many practice problems during lecture to review the knowledge and skills taught throughout the course material, similar to those on exams.
Taught my class with Rob Furrow. Good lecturer, watching lectures and doing study guides was enough to do well on assessments. Allows a notecard for exams. Overall take if you can.
This class covers a lot of material but she's a pretty engaging lecturer. Funny, tells personal stories, brings in props to demonstrate concepts. Lectures can be a tiny bit disorganized (which only matters bc this class is all about the organization of taxa) but other than that, very good. Super open to questions & very caring.
I really loved this professor and if you can take her class then do it. She makes seemingly difficult topics easy and really takes the time to describe things so everyone can fully understand it. You can tell she really cares for students as she puts learning at the main focus of her lectures. Plus she relates lectures to real life which helps.
This class was hard as it is and having Keen as a lecturer just made it harder. She is not straightforward at all and many students felt like she was all over the place.
Tbh people are super hard on her but I don't know why. Shes a very passionate professor and goes into the details of things that are usually "common sense." Has teaching credentials so she actually wants the class to perform well and doesn't make you feel like she hates you or doesn't care if you pass or not. would recommend.
I think her teaching style was a bit fast-paced for me but her exams were fair because as long as you paid attention to what she was saying or demonstrating in class that material was definitely on the exam, almost word for word as she explained it. She cares about the students' questions and will email you the answer directly after lecture.
Prof. Keen is a very knowledgeable and passionate professor! She loves what she teaches and inspires curiosity by highlighting the mysteries in the field. Her lectures can be hard to follow, and her test questions often ask about specific details. Organize your notes as much as possible after class to give yourself the structure you need!
Dr. Keen always had informative lectures, and broke topics down in a way that was very intuitive for me to follow along. She was also very open to student questions during lecture, and always answered in a friendly and humorous way. Would highly suggest taking BIS2B with her if possible!
Professor Keen's lectures could be overwhelming at times, with lots of details on the slides and her adding more details at the same time. However, she explains concepts thoroughly and is always open to answering questions.
Dr. Keen is a good prof, however, her slides are so disorganized and contain way too much info. She sometimes goes too fast and skips over a lot of stuff but they will show up on hw or exams. Asks random questions on exams. Good at responding to questions and provides a lot of clarification.
Sometimes lectures went really fast or really slow. Explains things in a weird way sometimes, but otherwise good, caring, and likes to make students laugh.
She went very fast during lecture but she is very knowledgeable on the topics. I think she also taught the harder parts of Bis 2b so it was hard to follow sometimes.
Keen wasn't the worst but her lectures were always on the harder content in the class and she would put PARAGRAPHS on her slides making it hard to digest. She spoke fast and asked pretty specific exam questions so pay attention. She is a nice lady though and always willing to involve everyone and answer questions; it's just her annoying teaching.
Great prof!! Lectures can be overwhelming and fast-paced at times but she is very accessible outside of class.
LOVED KEEN she had interesting lectures that went in depth and had many fun facts! I enjoyed her office hours, she would take the time to explain everything. But because she went rly in depth, her test questions get specific so know the content that she teaches. Not everything she teaches is on the slides, so try to show up to class/watch lectures.
Prof Keen is the sweetest and overall such a funny person! There are a few group presentations in BIS 2C regardless of prof, and I would say the material can be kinda overwhelming since there is a lot. But Keen makes it enjoyable since she's so passionate and will do anything to help you understand, and even brought objects to demonstrate ideas!
BEST BIO PROFESSOR EVER!! She break downs difficult material to help us understand and she is very helpful during office hours. TAKE HER
GOATED PROFESSOR. Really cares for students. There is a lot of material so be on top on lectures and take good notes. Lets you use note card on 2nd midterm and the final. Offered a total of 14 extra credit points in the whole quarter. I loved her class and wish I took her for BIS 2B as well. She has a hilarious laugh too!
Prof. Keen is hilarious. I'll never forget her earthworm lecture. Lectures can be hard to focus and you easily get lost due to the amount of material. I would rewatch every keen lecture at home to really understand the material and what's important.
A very kind and inspirational professor teaching a very difficult class. All memorization! Graded on lab, lab practical, two midterms, and final. My advice: study, go to OH, and study more! Even if you do study hard, you're not guaranteed to pass. Class is curved but not enough where 1/5 to 1/4 ppl are failing
Professor had good content but was extremely disrespectful, rude, and had a self-righteous attitude. She knows her stuff and the class was clear in expectations but I've never had a professor as unprofessional and uncaring. I did not feel respected or heard in this course. Take her if you need to but don't expect kindness.
Prof Keen makes a dry subject fun with her quirky personality. While the content can be challenging, her engaging lectures and willingness to help during office hours make it manageable. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Keene's slides were far less organized than Ledford's which made it difficult to know what information was important and what wasn't. Also, there were times she didn't finish lecturing multiple times due to how much she'd go off on tangents during class. Her questions weren't as specific as Ledford's when they both taught the class.
she needs to learn how to use her mic, always cuts off. slides are messy and overwhelming (iykyk) i constantly have to rewatch lectures to process things in my own pace because i get lost very easily in class, which is p much mandatory.
Professor Keen's slides are very overwhelming and pretty disorganized. I think like most people have to rewatch her lectures as they are pretty confusing and jam packed w info. She loves to use silly little props which makes it semi entertaining to watch but her lecture style is pretty average/boring. Not bad if you have to take her for 2c though.
Disorganised lectures, and m jumps from one topic to another swiftly. Hard to follow along during lecture, but not too bad as he didn't teach the entire 10 weeks of the class. Prof. Ledford being there made it much more fun
Dr. Keen is super kind and is always willing to answer questions during her office hours. Overall, she is a good professor. My only critique is that her lecture slides are very dense. There is a lot of information on each slides that you don't need to know for the tests.
I wasn't too keen on her lecturing style: she often rushes through topics and explain things in a confusing way which was overwhelming. Pay attention to what she's saying b/c a lot of important info not on slides. Her questions on exams can be tricky so do her study guides. Overall, she's nice and funny, so not the worst.
lectures are kinda hard to follow sometimes, but thats just because the material can get pretty dense. her and dr ledford do clicker questions, but theyre helpful!! dr keen is super caring and she answers questions nicely
Clickers in class and labs graded harshly. Keen specifically had lecture slides that were less organized than I would have liked, and her test questions were oddly specific which I thought were sometimes unfair. This class is just straight memory.
Dr. Keen is great and so caring. Her office hours are super helpful and she is kind. The class involves lots of memorization. Be prepared! Lectures fast, emphasizes important things (repeats them mult. times). Had to rewatch all of her lectures to remember everything (she taught the harder portion of the class). iClicker Q's could be difficult.
Dr. Keen is very passionate about the subject and I loved her as a lecturer. The class is memorization heavy and the content can become overwhelming at times. She allows a note card which helps on midterms and the final. Lab practical and the final were very difficult due to the sheer amount of content we need to know. Highly recommend Dr. Keen.
she doesn't put her iclicker questions on the app so if you are not there you can't see them. she had some interesting demonstrations making lectures interesting. her part of the class is the more difficult part and there were so many things to know. 2 midterms&1 final, index card can be used on all. lab practical was not as bad as anticipated
sometimes lectures were too complicated but shoutout to dr. keen for letting us use notecards on exams
Her lectures are just too much. She puts so much on every slide making it difficult to understand which things to take notes on and which one's are important. She explains it very fast and I understand that she teaches the harder portion of the class but she should really be making it more easy for students to take notes at least.
Funny and engaging in lecture! Provides lots of examples about real organisms we may have encountered in Davis or CA. Sometimes walks around and "cold calls" people in big lectures which can be scary. Doesn't waste time on tangents. Frequently asks if there are any questions. Practice worksheets and practice tests provided. No reading needed :)
somehow structured lecture but really worse than the other male instructor, not interesting at all, slides are posted but have to listen to lectures otherwise you won't understand the content, lots of cases that will appear in exams
cutest professor, she is so sweet and funny, makes jokes during class and laughs a lot. she really values student participation and encourages it often, she is good at explaining difficult topics and sets clear expectations for the course. offered 2 extra credit points on a midterm :)
McMunn along with Keen were a fantastic combo! They managed to cover a ton of material in a straightforward, and not overwhelming manner. Great lecturers and everything was recorded. Labs are a moderate amount of easy work. Midterms are not hard if you study.
Dr. Keen is willing to answer questions however the exams are difficult to understand and there is no curve in class so you really have to do well on the exams if you want to pass this course. Furthermore, when lecturing she covers extra material that doesn't show up on the exam so it can be confusing sometimes as to what you are expected to know.
Nice person. She teach this course with another professor. For me, her part- genetics- is not that hard. However, because they works as a teaching group, I don't like their way to set the questions, there are tooo many Short Answer Questions that are subjective, even for genetics such a objective topic.
Dr. Keen is such a passionate professor. She tries to explain everything as clear as possible (sometimes may be confusing) but you can tell it's because she wants students to grasp the concepts. Her midterm is quite tricky and requires some thorough critical thinking. Personally, I think the answers can be made clearer. Overall, I respect her.
Prof. Keen explains things very clearly and makes it easy to conceptualize things. She emphasizes during lectures on what material we should/shouldn't keep in mind for exams, which was very helpful. Amazing and positive learning atmosphere.
Her lectures were very thorough and sometimes slides had a lot of information, but she would talk about what was necessary and could be on a test, so pay attention to that. Had some of the more difficult content in 2B, but I thought she explained everything really well. This class had a lot of study materials available for exams!
Amazing Professor, very knowledgeable. Answers all questions clearly, no matter how dumb it might be. Had her along with McMunn and enjoyed her lectures more. Easy A if you review lecture slides, do homework, and work on sample exams before the actual thing
Dr.Keen is such a great lecturer. She made hard-to-grasp concepts much easier. She knows exactly how to continue explaining a topic after hearing a student's question, which is what I really appreciate. She also walks around the class when asking questions, which made class really fun and something to look forward to.
fair course. very imformative. very helpful. very nice. dont ask too much of you. fair exams and grading. every thing went nice and smooth. mcmunn and keen were an excellent combination. recommend
Seemed like she really knew what she was talking about. Knew what parts to put emphasis on based on what confused past students. Tests were pretty straight forward, and sometimes had extra credit. Discussion was like another lecture and not mandatory. The class was taught with Marshall McMunn.
Class was taught by both McMunn and Keen, slides are easy to understand and exams weren't very difficult.
She really cares about her students! Loved the way she lectures. There were definitely times I missed lectures but always made up by watching the recordings--take notes and pay attention to lectures and you will pass!
While this professor was willing to answer questions, I found the lecture pacing inconsistent and the exam questions confusing. The labs were not very straightforward either; it is challenging to get an A in this class.
Really like this professor, she definitely comes off a little strong/strict at the beginning, but she's super knowledgeable and caring, pay attention and you'll get good grades. Lectures can be hard to focus, but interesting content, easier than 2A,k and she's really nice.
She is very knowledgable and organized as a lecturer and very sweet as a person. The slides are well organized and she explains things very well. Having her and ledford for Bis2c was just an amazing experience. Tests are not too hard but you def have to study and do practice questions. You can also take a cheat sheet to exams which is nice
While she was very kind, I didn't like her lectures. Her slides sometimes didn't reflect the content she was trying to get across well, and she often didn't know how to approach/teach certain topics. Ultimately tho she got the work done lol, and I hope she has a good retirement
Dr. Keen is a great professor who show her passionate for science through lectures. She touches on the problem in detail and it can sometimes overwhelming to study but it shows that she has cool experiences and try to embrace it in context to make it more interesting. My pleasure to be in Dr.Keen class for both BIS2B and BIS2C.
Great professor; she ABSOLUTELY LOVES teaching and is amazing at it; however she tends to put more pictures in the slideshows forcing you to lock in a bit more in lectures. Nontheless, amazing time and she is absolutely knowledgeable and a vital resource in OH. Thank you for the past 32 years at UC Davis!!!
I love her kindness
Dr. Keen is a solid professor for BIS2C and she does a good job explaining the large amount of material on microbial eukaryotes, fungi, and animals. She brings in models of the animal body parts to class which were instrumental in visualization. However, her slides were a bit disorganized and some of the info you needed to know was only said aloud.
