Susan is probably the best TA i've ever had while at Pitt. Cares about her students, goes over everything, never makes you feel stupid. Highly recommend if you can get her!
Great lab TA!!

Writes tests that are too long.
Knows her stuff (after all, she does have a Ph.D.)- but can't teach it. You can do just as well in the class by reading out of the book and sleeping instead of going to class, becuase all she says is straight out of the book, very little actual explanatio
She's too inexperienced to be teaching a class like organic chemistry. Her tests are poorly written and often contain mistakes or inaccuracies a more experienced organic teacher wouldn't make. Lectures suck. Nice lady who wants to help, though. Sell your kidneys to get Bandik if necessary.
First I must say that we were her first Chem 120 class she's ever had, but I still feel that even if it was her 30th year teaching Chem 120, she would have been terrible at it.
i get the idea she doesn't really know what she's talking about, but she tries her best to help you when you need it
She was a great professor. Her lectures were interesting and she really cares about the students. Her tests were hard, but also from her notes. Organic is a hard subject, so somewhat hard exams are expected. I took her class over the summer and really enjoyed it.
Good lectures, learned a lot, never took AP Chem prior to class and had no problem. Wants you to learn and makes it easy for you to do so.
I didn't know much about chemistry before this class and I don't know much more after taking it. I often relied on learning all the ideas from the TA right before having her weekly quiz. She is lazy and didn't give back our writing assignments for weeksand didn't even appear to read most of them.
She's about what I would define as an average teacher. She's smart, but makes mistakes on notes and has a hard time getting the point across sometimes. She's not boring, but not exciting enough to keep me awake at 8:00 AM. The class is easy, I didn't take AP chem and I did fine in her class.
Not the greatest teacher - not very interesting. Did not look at most of our writing assignments that we handed in to her, and she did not return them for weeks and weeks. Although, I would have to say she is the easier of the two chem profs for CHEM 0960.
excellent prof. teaches well and explains things well, she is always willing to help. Tests are tricky but not impossible. best chem 960/970 prof presently teaching.

I liked her. She really did want to help. Had kinda sloppy notes, but I think she conveyed chem pretty well.
Good teacher
She is a good teacher because she makes chemistry easy. I never liked chem until I took her class. Now I like it. She makes chem fun and is always willing to help.
i feel that even though i am failing, or have failed, she is a good professor. Her lectures make sense, and are generally easy to follow. Her tests on the other hand are quite complicated in my opinion. She is still better than the other chem teachers from what i understand, so if you like chem i think you will enjoy her

She has good clear notes, very organized. You don't get the feeling she has an overwhelmingly good grasp of what she's talking about, but she really cares. She teaches OK, much better than Len. I got a C+ in the class, and I think she was being generous (it's very possible I didn't answer a single question right on my final exam).
this class is very hard. her lectures are good and helpful. homework is pointless but must be done. labs are also pointless but necessary. quizzes are somewhat helpful. tests are very difficuly and require alot of studying for a respectable grade. would not recommend taking this course, but if you must, she is an alright option for an instructor.
She is the best chem teacher in freshman engineering. Don't expect a better one. The class average of maleckar's is greater than the other chem professors. I failed the final(55%) and ended up with a B+. I would have given myself a C. Great teacher
She is a very helpful teacher, although her office hours are limited. She does practice examples by the boatload in class. Go to class, pay attention, and your good for a C. She also posts quizes w/ answers that make great practice. Tests are curved. One of the easiest profs I've had.
An excellent prof. She really wants you to do well and tells you lots of stuff on how to do well. She cares so much more than other profs. She gives awesome exam review sheets. She sums up everything well and is even humorous at times. Of course, Ochem isn't the easiest class, but with her you'll be better off than with anyone else. She is great!

Dr. Maleckar is not exactly the most organized teacher and doesn't really seem to care whether you understand the material or not. Try not to take her class if it's at all possible.
Nice professor who seems to care that students are understanding the material. However, rather unclear on more difficult subjects and many times skips over ambiguous cases (which happen A LOT in chemistry). These ambiguous cases always seem to make it to the test. Her unclarity may have been to lack of interest in teaching an entry level class.

Great Prof! I am glad I had her for Chem I. She cares for her students and I like how she connects chem with the real world, makes lectures interesting and give u opp for bonus pts in tests. I'll miss her class.
Prof. Maleckar only puts material covered in lecture on exams. Sometimes, however, she does not explain material clearly enough. She is great with office hours though and is always willing to help you if you don't understand something. Altogether, she is pretty solid teacher. This coming from a student who is not interested in chemistry at all.
She is very passionate about chemistry, and I thought she was a great professor to have for my first semester of college. She uses easy to understand examples, although sometimes she rambles a little bit.
Maleckar is a great professor. She is very understanding of the students and wants them to do well. Her tests are fair and she explains things thoroughly.
Dr. Maleckar's organic chemistry lectures were well done. She used Dr. Bandik's lecture notes, which were extremely well organized and helpful. Tests and homework assignments were of appropriate difficulty. Good choice for Organic Chem.
So having Bandik for organic 1 definitely made this class easier. Dr. Maleckar is decent.. she hands out lecture notes, curves like normal, etc. It shouldn't be too hard to do well in the class. There are a lot of reactions to memorize!
she is a terrible teacher and comes late to every lecture the only way to learn is reading the book. do not take her if you can. terrible terrible terrible prof
don't take her if you can avoid it. she HAD george as a prof and tries to mimic and fails. she is very unclear and actually doesnt know the matieral. ive asked her ?s in recitation and she actually ignored them! dont take!!!
I thought going into Chem 2 I would do well...but Maleckar clearly likes to see her students fail. She madde the second exam so hard that the average was a 50. She claims "so she would not have to round the final average down" but why not make the test a little difficult where the average is say a 65-70, not 50, which completely tank everyones gpa
Oh please, people, don't listen to these other bad comments right before mine. She is GOOD, and don't let people who didn't try to their full potential persuade you otherwise...
Great professor. She is very detailed. Tests are a little on the difficult side but worth it in the long run.
She is one of the best profs I've had at Pitt and was very helpful in class. Her tests are challenging but definitely passable if you study a lot. Not too much work.
Worst teacher ever. Doesn't even wear big brown and beautiful very often!
Professor Maleckar is really nice and very helpful. Her class isn't hard at all and she is very good at explaining concepts.
Dr Maleckar is one of the worst professors I've ever had. She cancelled class 7 times alone this semester and she wasn't helpful during office hours
She's a talking textbook, so don't expect to get any unique insight. Might as well just learn from the book. She tries to sweet-talk that the exams are reasonable and fair, but she really just tries to slaughter the class (the tests are way too long for the allotted time and she makes the problems completely impractical).
She is a Joke. She doesn't care about her students. She would actually like to see them fail, and delights in the higher the number. If you attend class, she shows up late, and doesn't care. If you have her,may God have mercy on you.
HORRENDOUS. Exam questions would combine 10 different concepts and 9 times out of ten you knew all of them but had no idea how to even start the problem. Cancelled seven classes during the semester. direct quote after being asked for help: "It is not my responsibility to help prepare you for the exam." Average on one test was a 50 with best 85
Sometimes class got a bit unorganized. I cannot complain about her lecture notes, though. They were very detailed. She does not zoom through lecture like Grabowski, and she curves to 75% without extra credit, so be sure that you are on your toes about beating your classmates.
terrible lecturer. cant teach in an organized manner at all. take another prof. if possible.
Dr. Maleckar teaches in a highly organized manner and I feel like I am learning a lot from her. I have had no problems with disorganization and she has only canceled class once due to family health complications. Over all a great professor.
Good teacher that makes herself accessible to students and generally wants you to succeed.
Speaks explains chemistry concepts very well and generally wants you to succeed. If you learn from examples, she's a solid choice for a professor. Highly recommended.
Dr. Maleckar really wants you to learn your chemistry. When she teaches, its like she remembers what it was like when she was learning O.Chem and is quite empathetic. She's immensely oraganized, she just enjoys going off on tangents and wasting a bit of time. But she won't rush thru material just b/c, she just wont test u on it. Take her if u can!!
Maleckar was a good teacher for idiots and ppl who want a "nice" professor. Hardness is not an issue b/c tests are curved to a 75%. Although she is a nice lady, she is fairly disorganized, always on a tangent, and slower with an answer than one might hope. If you're intelligent and care about the material, take someone else.
She rambles on in class and is not clear during lecture at all. Her tests are ridiculously hard and she doesn't give you the slightest clue what is going to be on them. Try to take Dr. Kogut for Chem if you can
I think she's good for Ochem2. She teaches you like you don't know anything (which is good). She doesn't zoom past the material. Her exams can be tricky, but doable. Attend recitation, do all the assigned homework from the textbook. My only complain is that she doesn't give us enough practice questions. Other than that, she's fabulous for Ochem2.
I have a strong background in chemistry since I had an excellent teacher in high school, so take my rating with a grain of salt in terms of easiness. I did find that anything I was shaky on, she cleared up very quickly. I think her explanations make sense to even people who are seeing it for the first time. Tests arent hard, but long, so work fast.
Dr. Maleckar is a really great Professor. Although her tests can be lengthy and with a few trick questions thrown in, what chemistry class doesn't have that. I suggest her highly especially if you have some prior chemistry knowledge. Really nice professor.
She is an excellent instructor. I did not utilize her office hours very much b/c I felt fine in the class. But she is more than willing to work with students, her tests are fair but a little harder than I originally expected. She makes good use of examples and connects them to real world aspects. She reminds me of a H.S. teacher but a bit harder
I went into the class hating chemistry and came out liking it. She is very kind (both in lectures and office hours), is great at explaining concepts, and she takes the time to print "partial notes" so that students aren't rushing to write instead of listening in lectures. I'd definitely recommend her. Tests are difficult so study and READ THE BOOK.
Clear explanations. The tests are very similar to the weekly quizzes. All in all the test are fair, not easy but nothing tricky or trying to make the average a 50%. Dr. Maleckar wants to help you and explains thing clearly. Definitely the best professor for Chem 1 for Engineers. Took her for chem 2 without a second thought
I had Dr.Maleckar for Chem 120 and I can honestly say she's one of the best teachers I've had EVER. She genuinely cares about her students and she wants you to do well. Go to her office hours, they will make a difference between a C or a B. she gives partial notes which are super helpful and online home works that boost your grade. She's the best!
She was awesome! Best teacher I've had so far. Her guided notes are amazing. Her tests are fair and the Sapling Learning homework is so helpful. I learned and understood almost everything she taught. She is also very helpful during office hours.
She's pretty awesome.
Professor Maleckar was definitely my favorite professor in my freshman year of engineering. Her office hours were extremely helpful and I absolutely loved holding conversations with her. If you show interest in the subject and give her class your best effort you will be fine. I absolutely recommend taking her for Chemistry for Engineers.
I had Professor Maleckar for Chem 1 for Engineers. I went in with basically no knowledge/want of knowledge of chemistry and came out actually liking it, and it's because of her. She's great to talk to in office hours and is really straightforward in her teaching. Tests are fair, involve more applying versus multiple choice. DEFINITELY recommend!
Definitely recommend Dr. Maleckar. She's a very reasonable person and was my one prof that cared about her students. Not an easy class, but she's a fair teacher.
She is a great teacher. I don't see how she could improve her class or her teaching. Besides the first exam though, the exams are rough, even after tons of studying. One thing I didn't like was that the final exam was nearly 33% of the final two chapters which were not covered very well and was nearly impossible. Also, she never entered grades.
Maleckar is great. She is very organized and clear in her lectures. The exams can be difficult, but it would be a much harder course with a different professor I believe.
Awesome professor! Gives great examples during class and her material is more organized than any professor I've had. Her lecture style may sound intimidating, but she's super nice and is extremely helpful if you approach her.
you dont even text book if you attend her class
She is a very good lecturer. Her lectures were interesting and she did not expect you to memorize tiny little details, and there were always formula sheets on the exams and quizzes. Her exams and quizzes were really easy if you just paid attention during class. The textbook is not needed for her class. Take her if you can. Amazing professor!
She is a very helpful teacher. I did not take ap chem in high school and still did well in her class. I felt my grade did not reflect how much I knew due to her tests being hard and confusing. She is always there to help but the tests seem to get everybody who only has knowledge of chem from her
Explains absolutely nothing conceptually. Everything is based on word problems that she condescendingly leads the class through without prior explanation of any of the meaning behind them. Both she and class are disengaging, irrelevant, and unhelpful. Nothing taught is put into any overarching important themes, which ruins chemistry completely.
Great teacher. Tests were fairly easy if you did the homework. Offered two kinds of homework. One was mandatory for both Chem 1 and 2. The other was completion based for Chem 1, and for Chem 2 she offered it for some bonus. Definitely recommend going to lectures. Wouldn't take anyone else for ENGR Chem 1 or 2
Dr. Maleckar was a lovely chem professor. Don't even buy the book. She gives partial notes which are a gift sent from heaven and homework is online not through OWL. If you miss lecture then you will have to find someone to copy notes off of because she doesn't post powerpoints online so that you come to lecture.
Material seemed to be not too difficult. Homework was primary learning resource. Tests were very difficult. Only the best of the best can truly earn an A because of test difficulty.
Maleckar is a great professor, and she teaches everything really well. The one problem? Her tests are brutally difficult, with less than 3% of the class making an A on the final exam and the class averages usually sitting in the low 70s. It's sad that she makes it so hard, because she's an excellent professor but really difficult to do well in.
Pretty good professor. Rather similar to a high school teaching style though, so not a very good introduction to "real" college teaching styles. Her lectures were clear, but sometimes seemed to oversimplify the material. Homework was easy but helpful, and exams were surprisingly difficult compared to the rest of the class.
Quizes, Homework, and Lab help your grade. But the open ended style tests are horrible. Even Chem majors do not get As. She is a very kind woman, but her tests were impossible.
She explains things extremely well. Her lecture notes are VERY clear... however hardest exam i've taken to date. Not a great average. lowest grade in the 20's i think, less than 5 A's.. but I would take any class with her again, she's a great lecturer, and most importantly, TEACHER.
I love Maleckar! One of the first professors I've really come to enjoy at Pitt. She prints out outlines of lecture notes that you fill out along with her in lecture, and really helps points out details necessary for O-chem! Her exams were fair considering the difficulty of the material, and she's super funny and nice. Definitely take her!
YES!! Take this professor at any cost.
If you're searching for a Chem 1 or 2 for Engineers professor, I would recommend looking elsewhere. Lectures are rushed, simplified and she just doesn't seem to care all that much. Pushed by Budny (head of frshmn eng) to make tests very hard. For other classes, I've heard very good things
Great professor. I recommend if you really want to learn and are interested in ochem. The course is demanding no matter who you take, but Maleckar made the class enjoyable and revitalized my love for chemistry.
It's Ochem so I expected it to be difficult, but I was not prepared for the grade I got.. I thought the final was difficult, and apparently it was because my grade plummeted. Maleckar is a great woman and I loved going to lecture, but look elsewhere for a professor based on her exams.
Had Maleckar for Engineering Chem 1 and 2. She's a good lecturer, but her class notes are simple compared to what she expects you to know. Exams are EXTREMELY difficult, even for chemical engineers. Very hard to study effectively for her exams, and she wasn't helpful in office hours. Would not recommend to anyone with little interest in chemistry.
You will need to put in a lot of extra work on the side because her notes do not match up with her exams. Her exams are very hard and recitation quizzes do little to help prepare for the type of questions you will see.
Dr. Maleckar is great! Love her and her class. She is so down to Earth and wants everyone to do well and understand the material. You need to put some work in and really understand the concepts to do well on the exams. Then, the exams are not difficult.
She is not approachable or helpful. Does not encourage you to ask her for help. The tests are way different than the stuff on the notes. Requires a lot of practice to do well on a test.
Dr. Malekar is great! She actually understands that her class isn't the only one students are taking. The homework is minimal, but you do need to put in some effort to do well on exams. Her lectures are also really easy to follow. I would definitely take her again.
She's got a very good sense of humor, and it helps keep the class going. She knows what she's talking about and offers you lots of extra grades to boost those test scores. Her tests are fair, but aren't easy. She gives you lots of opportunity for help, though.
Lectures are understandable, but she goes off on random tangents that are not beneficial. Her exams are way harder than the homework assignments and class examples.
Maleckar is a great lecturer and really seems down to earth and there for her students. However when it comes to the content on the test it simply does not match her lecturers, homework, or quizzes. If you plan on taking Maleckar make sure to study more than just the quizzes and homework.
Entertaining lecturer. Gives good examples. Doesn't give a lot of homework, but you need to do a lot of extra work to do well on exams. If you love chemistry, I would recommend her!
Tests started out easy, but the final was tough. Not too much homework. Not a bad experience. Would recommend for Chem I.
I went into Dr. Maleckar's Gen Chem 1 class worried about her tests since I have heard they are difficult, but I really had no issue with her tests and they seemed fair to me. As expected in a science class, you do have to put extra work and study. Your grade is highly tests based with little homework. Overall, good professor!
Dr. Maleckar is a great lecturer. She makes many chem concepts very clear and is great at explaining all of the little details. Definitely study for tests because they are tough, but if you put in the effort, you will do well.
Definitely a good lecturer because she knows her stuff and is really funny. But tests are really challenging. You're expected to know your stuff really well and the quizzes, hw and notes don't compare to how hard her tests are. They are definitely fair but you must work really hard to do well.
genuinely cares about students. engineers have shorter class than gen chem. tests at 8 am, difficult to finish, have trick questions mentioned in class, good averages. short office hrs but willing to help or stay after class. easy-ish weekly homework and quizzes. book reading not too important. but extra work required (book probs). in class assgns
Prof Malekar is a teacher where she makes things in lecture very clear. Her homework is doable and quizzes are hard. However, her exams are extremely difficult. Her exams have concepts, long problems, and tests your understanding of the material. In ENGRCHEM, there is always a long problem where you will have figure out how to find the answer.
GO TO LECTURE! Her partial notes and explanations are amazing, but the difficulty of her hw, quizzes, and class example problems do not reflect the difficulty of her tests. Her exams consist of mc and open ended questions, so know your concepts. Exams are completely fair, but you really have to work for an A. She is also very nice and approachable
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. She begins the class by saying "If you have not had 3 years of chem, you will fail my class". And she was right. The things she lectures on are not necessarily on the test. She will go over one thing for 5 minutes in lecture and it will be worth the most points on the quiz. I would avoid taking her!!
I had basically know chem experience before hand, and she didn't help with that. She skips the intro stuff, and assumes you know info. She goes quickly and the lectures are boring. If you are bad at chem or not familiar with it, don't take her. DO THE HOMEWORK, and try and get an A in Lab. that saved my grade. (I got Ds on every test)
She's good at explaining things during lecture. She also provides partial notes online that can be completed during lecture. The tests are fair and straightforward with some multiple choice and some open-ended questions. She's a very good teacher, and I definitely recommend her, but Dr. Golde is better.
Uses some great examples to explain the material. That being said, you need to put in a LOT of extra workstudying (on top of the online homework) to do well on the exams. Exams are tough and long, but cover the material fairly. Take this professor if you want to learn the material thoroughly and are willing to put in the work!
Maleckar knows her stuff. She is easy to pay attention to, and she covers all the material you need to know for the exam in a refreshingly straightforward way (I never cracked open the textbook). GO TO CLASS! I love the online program she uses (Sapling), great way to boost your grade with homework problems that actually help you learn.
Dr. Maleckar is a fantastic chem professor. Her tests are hard but fair. She gives you partial notes which are well organized and help you prep for tests. She is a great lecturer and makes chem relatable to the real world which helps for sure.
Maleckar is great. She puts powerpoints online for you to fill in during lecture. She covers both the theoretical and math sides of chemistry. Her tests are fair and have multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer questions. If you study the notes from lecture you should be in good shape for the tests.
Kind in grading. Make things clear.
No chemistry class in college is ever going to come easy, esp at a school like pitt. Maleckar is respectful, knows her stuff, knows how to explain it, knows how to give examples. By far the fairest teacher i have had for science courses. would recommend over the other professors
She is very nice and approachable. The class isn't easy. The quizzes are easier than the tests.
Dr. Maleckar is super sweet and helpful. It can sometimes be a challenge to get into her office hours. She gives note hand outs for students to fill in that follow along with her power points There is weekly homework and quizzes, and the tests are SUPER LONG but fair She was one of my favorite professors this semester
THE BEST CHEM PROF IMO! she explains everything so well. sapling is the best for homework, and quizzes are fine, but the tests will might make you cry. RELAX-- i bombed the first exam and did slightly better on the rest and pulled a B- for the course. fairest prof i've had so far. handed me tissues when i cried in her office.
Professor Maleckar was a really good professor. She taught the material well and was always available to help. I was able to go to her office hours and she advised me on possible careers I could pursue. Very honest and will tell you like it is. Can get a bit cranky sometimes, but hey who doesn't. If taking Chem 2, take Maleckar.
Dr. Maleckar's lectures were all very clear. She did not go too fast at all. The guided notes she makes are extremely helpful!
Dr. Maleckar is one of the best professors that I have had while at Pitt. She only makes you responsible for the material covered in class (right from her handy-dandy guided notes) so owning the text is not necessary. I spend most of the semester in her office just talking about life. 10/10 would highly recommend.
Chemistry used to be one of my weakest subjects, but Maleckar made it very possible to do well in her class even if Chem isn't your thing. Her tests tend to be a little too long but they're usually pretty fair, she doesn't try to trick you. Hands down one of the best professors I've had at Pitt so far. Really down to earth and very approachable.
Maleckar's definitely one of the better gen chem professors. I'm glad I had her! Lectures are clear & easy to digest, I loved the partial notes she gives us, she provided tons of helpful resources (study guides & MARIA IS AWESOME), and tests are fair (but not easy). She also gave a very generous curve at the end of the semester.
Maleckar's class was tough for me. You really need to put in work outside of class to truly understand the material because her tests are VERY hard. Besides that, I really liked her. She is such a sweet professor and I would recommend going to her office hours. She seems intimidating but is actually so friendly and personable! I would recommend her
She goes very in-depth in class, which helps in studying, but her tests take it to a whole new level. Her tests are very difficult and are way more detailed problems than what you do in class. She is very eager to offer help to students though.
Dr. Maleckar is very friendly and wants you to succeed. However, her exams do not follow her lectures. They are very challenging. I like her partial notes because it made the material easier.
Her final exam is probably tied for the hardest test I've ever taken. Her class and lectures are great and the homework problems are not hard, however, her tests are hard as heck. She doesn't give practice exams and they are nothing similar to what she lectures about, and are ten times harder than homework. Take her if you're great at chem.
Maleckar is a great professor. She is a good lecturer and pretty clear about what will be on the exam. Her exams are fair, though not easy. I got a B in the class and worked pretty dang hard for it. Expect to do Sapling homework weekly and actually study for exams. I would recommend Maleckar to anyone.
I absolutely loved Dr. Maleckar and this class. Her tests are tough, and you really need to study and put in time outside of class practicing problems if you want to do well. She has in class activities so you need to go to class (they also are sometimes similar to test questions). Loved her partial notes too! Review sessions are extremely helpful.
Its great that she's a sweet professor, but I could care less about that. Her exams were EXTREMELY difficult that no matter how hard I studied for the stupid class, I still failed. She gave me study tips that I was already doing. Her homework and back of the book problems did not help for the exams either. Her partial notes were helpful.
Maleckar provides excellent in class notes to follow along with her powerpoints. For all that she's a good lecturer, her exams take it to a whole new level. No matter how much you study, or how well you understand the material, textbook problems, note examples, homework, or old quizzes, the exams will destroy your grade. Avoid at all costs.
She's seriously so smart and I respect her immensely, but I studied hours upon hours for exams and I still failed. Idk what to say about this class other than it was just hard. She taught the material really well, and you learn a ton but the tests will demolish you.
A really nice teacher but I suck at chem and honestly if you do what she says you will pass and can easily get a C or B.
She was very smart and knew what she was talking about but I would study for 2 weeks before an exam and go to tutoring and receive a B. The open ended questions come from previous homeworks or ICA. I wouldnt recommend, there are better profs out there
Dr. Maleckar is a great professor. She is very caring and is extremely knowledgeable. She really wants everyone to know chemistry, which shows in her lectures. She makes partial notes t follow along with in class, which is amazing. Since you aren't just writing everything down, you can really pay attention to her lectures and get information.
Susan is a great woman and she is a great lecturer. However, her tests are horrendously difficult, so you have to be prepared to put in the work. Do not take if you don't have the time to put in the work, but if you can, it'll be worth it.
Professor Maleckar is a great professor. She's really a more knowledgeable high-school teacher, and I mean that in a really good way. She's really approachable and down to earth, while also being extremely helpful for Chem. Definitely recommend taking her
Would be a better teacher if she could actually pair her tests with the material learned. Tests are unnecessarily difficult. Very SAD that this is a teacher at Pitt!! Tragic.
Dr. Maleckar is amazing. I like her classes. They are always interesting and easy to understand, she uses some daily examples to help us understand. Not too much homework.
Professor Maleckar really goes out of her way to make a large class setting feel more personal. She gives fill-in-the-blank notes that are easy to follow and fill in. I got high B's and low A's on all of her exams after just a couple hours of studying. If you don't understand something, she is not afraid to spend a day reviewing the topic.
Maleckar had good slides that were posted to courseweb. She was well organized but not uptight. Her class was relatively easy if you pay attention. Open to questions in lecture if you don't understand something, very willing to explain things after lecture as well. Exams were fair.
Maleckar is a solid choice for chem for engineers. It is very clear what she expects from the students. Some exams are harder than others. People with prior experience in chem will do well.
Love her. great chem prof. Lectures are okay exams are easy and she helps outside of class will definitely take her again
Maleckar is probably the best option for engineering gen chem. Not the greatest lecturer out there, but by no means the worst. Partial notes posted online. Incredibly nice lady, will work with you if needed. Exams are fine.
Phenomenal teacher, but you must stay on top of your work. The exams are SO fair and if you study hard, understand the homework, and don't underestimate her tests, you will do well. I did very well on the first two test but not so well on the third test and final and ended up getting a C. You must put in time to do well in this class.
I had taken chem for 2 years in high school before taking it with maleckar. I expected a higher grade than a B but I don't think she was unfair. There was only one opened ended question on a test that I thought was too convoluted for what she had taught us, but I would definitely take her again!
very hard tests!!
She was OK for CHEM0960. However, CHEM0970 has been dreadful. She has decent lectures and her partial notes are very helpful. The quizzes are easy. That being said, her exams are nearly impossible. I always find myself failing them even when I study for a week. She also does not put any grades up until the semester is over. Would not recommend
Averages on the last two exams were approximately 58% and 52%. Final was 61%. Poor lecturer. Doesn't post grades online. Avoid.
Conducts her lectures off of a powerpoint presentation, but explains the info on the slides more in-depth. Very good at explaining the info, and uses funny analogies. Is also understanding about students who do not have much background in chemistry, and is a really good review teacher if you've taken AP. Only problem is she pronounces measure wrong
I actually liked Dr. Maleckar for chem 1, so I took her again but ended up regretting it. Her exams were WAY to long for the amount of time given and pretty difficult. She's not the best at updating grades. However, she is very nice and approachable. She also tries to relate the concepts to real life which is nice. Recommend for chem 1, not chem 2.
I'm not the best at chemistry, and have really struggled with the class in the past. Taken this class with Dr. Maleckar was no different. Lucky she was very flexible and meet with me privately to go over my exam and help me come up with a study plan to be successful, on top of all the office hours provided I was able to succeed. I would recommend!
She is a good teacher. Well spoken, fantastic at teaching, and understanding. Willing to work with you and there is always tons of office hours, and free tutoring. That being said chems hard. There has yet to be an exam where I did ball my eyes out. But with all other opportunities to bump up your grades, plus a letter grade curve it can be done.
Lectures were very clear and always got the main point across very well. Homework was super helpful and the weekly quizzes were fair. Exams are a little difficult, but of course that is to be expected. Overall a great professor and a great lecturer!! I genuinely enjoyed going to this class everyday , definitely take if you have the chance!
She's a decent lecturer, but do not take her for CHEM 2. Her tests are ridiculously long and hard and she grades them horrifically. Good luck even trying to scrap a C out of her class.
Prof. Maleckar is a good lecturer who relates important topics to the real world. You will have weekly homework and quizzes, both of which are very helpful in preparing for exams. Exams are difficult but not impossible, especially if you take advantage of her extra practice problem sets. Overall, I recommend Prof. Maleckar for Chem 2.
Partial notes as well as exam study guides are always posted on canvas, and I found them incredibly helpful when preparing for exams. Homework and textbook are on Achieve, which is a separate cost, but the assignments are a decent part of grading.
Maleckar's online lecturing style is basically that of high school teachers as she just moves through slides at the speed of sound, otherwise, they're decent. I've always felt the material taught was pretty easy however when you get to the tests they are super hard for no reason. did bad on every test but there was a huge curve at the end.
I took ap chem in hs, so take this with a grain of salt but for me, her class was extremely easy. She moves at a very reasonable pace and has very little weekly homework. Not a bad teacher, but never did anything that makes her a great professor.
Refuses to go in person for lectures, which is kind of frustrating for a person who learns better in person. Decent teacher, however, her lectures are stupidly easy, and then at exam time, she turns up the difficulty to 11. If you attend class you'll be fine.
I LOVE Dr. Maleckar. She is extremely well prepared in class, lectures are always very clear, and she gives partial notes that help a lot. She is also very accessible outside of class and responds to emails quickly. Her tests can be tough, but they are fair, and she makes it clear what to study for them. I highly recommend!
I had Maleckar for Chem960 and Chem970. Her exams were difficult, but she is caring and wants her students to do well. All classes were on zoom (even after quarantine), so that might have made learning more difficult because of my goldfish-like attention span. On top of hw, she posts extra review problems, review sheets, and exam review sessions.
This is my second time with professor Maleckar and I continued to enjoy how she lectures. She always is very prepared, and the partial notes help me follow along. Her exams can be difficult, but she always gives enough resources to prepare if you choose to and is very responsive to students questions.
good prof, just doesn't post notes online so go to class or get a friend to send notes to u
I enjoyed having Dr. Maleckar. She tells you what you need to know without over-explaining. She also gives exam reviews with tons of practice questions to review. The final was a little tricky but overall, a great teacher. I am taking her next semester for CHEM 0970
Susan makes the lectures very easy and understandable. The homework was sometimes difficult, but if you have taken chem before, it wasn't bad. However, her tests are ridiculously hard, and the graders are awful. You always get a worse grade then you feel like you were going to get. She seems to care for students, but slams them with her tests.
long lectures (lectured us during a campus lockdown). def a great professor for Engr chem bc she explains the engr aspects of things and is genuinely caring. But if you are not ready to put in work outside of class DON'T take her. Her lectures are amazing but very concentrated so reviewing the textbook was a must for me (provided lec note outline).
I loved having Dr. Maleckar for GenChem for Engineers I. She holds 3 lectures a week, 2 with your section and 1 with both her sections combined. Dr. Maleckar does not post her slides or notes from class, so make sure you have someone who can send them to you. Do the homework, it's easy points and the questions are similar to what's on the exams.
If you had a good Chemistry foundation in HS, Maleckar is fine. If you had a bad Chemistry foundation in HS, DON'T TAKE HER CLASS. She moves too fast for someone who's learning everything for the 1st time, and her exams are very difficult with low averages. The other professor recorded her lectures, and Maleckar does not, which is another negative.
Very nice and understanding, and a good lecturer. Definitely don't skip class because she goes through topics quickly. Exams are pretty hard, but everything is explained well in the lecture and study guides are posted online. I struggled with chem in HS, but I didn't feel lost or fall behind or anything in this class.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but missing lectures will cause you to miss out on a great deal of information. Lots of homework that at times can take awhile to complete, but isn't usually too difficult. Overall a very good professor, and does a good job covering all the material.
Dr. Maleckar is a professor that wants you to succeed. She provides plenty of resources and provides partial credit when grading exams.
Overall she gave you many resources to be successful and she has guided lecture notes, making it easy to follow. Her exams aren't hard except her multiple choice is weighed very heavily. The average exam grades aren't the best but if you used your resources you should be fine.
Very nice professor, cares about the students and is willing to go over questions day before tests. However, the review material for tests did not prepare. The review material and homework for each test was significantly easier than the actual questions given on exams. If taking CHEM 0960, find different review material.
Very good professor. Clear, organized, intense, but most importantly, realistic. Very helpful and understanding if approached with questions or concerns. No nonsense, but has a very realistic view on how the material is best understood and taught.
Dr. Maleckar usually runs through 10 problems per class. She rarely teaches the concept, but teaches the problems instead. This works for some, but not all. If you have background in chemistry, then she is great to take. If you are new, I would try a more constructive class. She is always available for personal office hours.
Maleckar is an excellent professor if you are going into chemical engineering; she has so much knowledge. She teaches by doing example problems and reading off slides, but doesn't post the slides on Canvas. So, don't skip class! She is very accessible outside of class, but writes REALLY hard exams. You really have to know your stuff to do well.
Maleckar teaches through by guiding students through problems rather than purely lecturing. Additionally, we received much less HW than other 0970 classes. This is great for students that have a decent foundation in chemistry and want to prioritize other subjects. The exams are pretty difficult, so going to class everyday is a must.
Great professor. Maleckar gave us clear expectations for her class, she was extremely organized, and was a great lecturer. She gives a ton of optional work that is very helpful for studying for the exams. The exams were difficult but fair. She gives us partial notes that are very helpful as well. I would definitely recommend her.
Prof. Maleckar cares about students' success. Lectures are clear, and she provides helpful resources like partial notes and exam reviews. The class can be challenging, but using tools like unstuck study alongside the textbook can make studying more manageable.
If you take good notes, you'll be fine in this class. She doesn't post lectures online which can get annoying, so it's easy to fall behind if you miss a lecture. The material isn't too hard and the quizzes and exams usually have similar problems to the homework. She gives a lot of random tips during lectures which can help on exams.
As someone who isn't strong in chemistry, this class was tough. Maleckar goes very fast and expects you to understand everything she says as she's saying it. She does provide guided notes, however. The midterm exams were very hard, with the averages being around 60, but the final was more manageable and exactly like the practice she gave on Aktiv.
Dr. Maleckar is one of the better choices among a group of bad chem professors at Pitt. Her exams are long, the homeworks are long, you have to pay extra just to be able to submit homework and recitation quizzes. Could be worse.
Her exams are actually the worst I've ever had to take in college. She does not grade you for the correct process but for correct values which is extremely frustrating if you miss one or two things early on. Additionally, she posted a 100 question practice assignment which is optional to do. However only 1 or 2 of them will ever appear on the exam.
Her tests were born in the deepest layers of hell. She'll make it actively harder to study for tests since she barely relies on the textbook. The only actively helpful practice problems WILL be shown in class, and while she'll post 100+ practice problems online, only 1 will show up on the test.
Her exam averages were in the low 60s, high 50s. Her review questions are nothing like the exams, you can do all 100 practice problems and still be blindsided. She also has no review days and starts teaching a new subject before testing the old stuff. I went to her co-lab and office hours, and still almost failed. Don't take her unless you have to.
Make sure to go to class. Posts pre-lecture unfilled notes but does not give out lecture slides in any case. Lectures were boring, just reads from powerpoints, Gives more assistance on tests than most professors but strict grader. Small to no curve at the end of the semester.
Maleckar is a good professor and is very flexible, but this class is naturally very difficult. Go to lecture, and you should pass. 2/3 of the exams had failing averages, so the end of year curve is considerable. The first exam is BY FAR the easiest so a good grade on that is very important.
Dr. Maleckar was a good professor overall and I should've gotten an A in this class had I not failed the third exam on thermodynamics and calorimeters. The engineering version of general chemistry at UPitt is just hard.
I don't have bad things to say about her, but also not anything great either. Her lectures can get boring but it's important to go to class and take notes. The exams were very difficult, with averages ranging from about 50-60. Her office hours weren't that helpful, instead I'd recommend the tutoring in Hillman. I do plan on taking her again though.
Dr. Maleckar is a nice person, but her exams are extremely difficult. The averages would typically be in the 50-60 range, and the three exams are worth 71.4% of your grade. The quizzes we took in recitation were usually a lot easier than the exams. Her office hours are not super helpful, so I'd recommend TA office hours or tutoring in the Hillman.
Exams are way harder.
Unfortunately a required professor for the engineering course, at least for some people. All information is allegedly given in lectures, and if you miss one, good luck getting any of the notes. If at any point she explains a concept and mentions that there are "a few exceptions," you need to research those immediately.
Make sure you show up to lectures, decent amount of homework is given. Good teacher, they give out partial notes online and the lectures are fast enough that you will need them. Around 70% or grades are exams so prepare for them, she gives out practice problems use them.
Fine professor gives you everything you need for the exams. Equations constants the whole stuff. The exams in this class are weirdly weighted. The short answer portion (the part that you can do in your sleep) are weighted to be worth less then the mc section. And these are the hardest multiple choice questions you will ever see in your life.
