class was awful. we had 2 read grandiloquent, long articles & summarize 4 almost every class. the material was 2 abstract & difficult 2 understand 4 someone w/ no background in anthropology. prof was unorganized. didn't respond 2 student contacts. no idea what ur grade is during semester bc article summaries r graded w/ check -, checks, & check +
she cannot articulate herself well enough to describe anything it took us about two hours (more than one class) for her to describe what she wanted on our final paper
Unorganized, brought her daughter to every Tuesday class, spent more than half of each class rambling on about nothing...too many books in a short period of time. Nice person, yet not fit to teach the class. Not very engaging at all..
WORST PROF I've at at AU! She was unorganized, could not adapt to class's needs, could not understand that we did not have PhD's in Anthro- material was geared for students with background in the subject, while we clearly did not. Treated us like 7th graders with summaries due for each reading, yet no one every understodd the reading.
hard class but I learned alot. She expects a lot but is willing to work with you. Can't think about race or racism in the same way, opened my eyes. Take her class
very approchable always willing to talk after class. She has high standards but grading is fair and material is really interesting.
I don't know what the rest of the students are saying!!! She was awesome as a professor--very accessible and welcoming... I got a B and I know I did not do all the work but I enjoyed the class a lot...
One of my favorite profs at AU.Definitely one of the best in the Anth department. It was her first semester here so she had difficulties but overall it was a great class - of course you'd have to do the reading to know that. Changed the way I look at the world.
She is awesome and really knows her stuff. She sounds like a scary grader but isnt at all. She will change the way you look at the world. One of the best classes I've taken here. Definately take her classes!
She is awesome, super smart, funny and approachable. I learned so much in this class. Definately one of the best classes I have taken at AU. Fabulous prof, take her classes. She wants you to learn and you will!
Terrible. Always late with no apology. Disorganized-forgets things like it's her job. The class is a continual presentation of opinion as fact. 2 week minimum for getting assignments/tests back. Anthro majors are waist deep trying to brown-nose with her too. If this is a gen ed requirement, RUN AWAY RIGHT NOW, FIND ANOTHER CLASS!!!!
This woman is amazing. No need to have a background in anthro to understand the social discussions in class. Extremely articulate, clear, emotional, helpful and a wonderful teacher. Opens students' eyes to the things around them that they should already know.
McDonic is a good professor, she is really interesting to listen too, the only problem is that if you have taken previous gender courses you might not get as much out of the course as if you were taking one for the first time. If you know the theories and general themes of the course an A is totally possible.
Didn't learn much, hated the books, she is really opinionated and above my head sometimes. Likes the class to discuss, but very bad at leading a discussion and the topic always strays...
Among the worst classes I have ever taken. She constantly tells us her time is too valuable to help us and in the process wastes valuable class time complaining. Is not clear at all and doesn't explain anything. A VERY opinionated woman that trys to convince you that she is always right and you are always wrong. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!
She doesn't actually teach this class. We watch informational movies almost every class and I am constantly bored. Coming into the class I was hoping to learn a lot about the third world, but I've only learned what it's like to take a boring and un-engaging class. Find another way to satisfy gen-ed classes. Nice teacher...but doesn't teach.
Professor McDonic is a great teacher. She pushes you to question the world around you. She is an inspiring compassionate person. The movies she shows are truly fascinating. She is a very intelligent, informed, wise instructor. She will open your mind up to concepts that you would have never thought of. Take her class shes one of AU's best.
she's disorganized, some of the films for the class are outdated and she doesn't like to individually help students. however, shes really passionate and knows her stuff, most of the films are quality and the texts will give a better understanding of the 3rd world in general. wish for more discussion classes, they were the most helpful part of class
She knows her stuff, but seems to assume you already know it as well. Dense reading - and lots of it. That said, she really does open your eyes to a whole different perspective of looking at the world. In other words, your typical liberal, commie college professor that may be too smart for her own good - but hey, isn't that why you came to college?
Absolutely excellent. She is incredibly open-minded and compassionate about the world that she studies. She also encourages students to think outside their own experiences and biases to understand the connectedness of all the world. She is simply one of the best profs I have had at AU.
This professor is a joke. In her class, we watched a movie every day and talked about pointless, trivial things the other days. Some days, she didn't bother to show up. Although she seems passionate about her material, she is unable to convey information to others. Her grading is laughably easy. Her class: an easy A but waste of your time.
Terrible professor. Not open-minded at all. She HATES Christians, conservatives, and basically anyone that respectfully differs in opinion from her. Spent 20 minutes before evaluation pleading for good marks after having spent all semester spouting and preaching hatred and intolerance. You'll get an A if you accept her BS as gospel (pun intended).
This class was amazing, I learned so much. She didn't approach it the way I thought but I am grateful because I learned so much more about how the world works. She is smart, compassionate and definately open to opposing views. She was always available to help. Take her classes, she is awesome! She will open your eyes and challenge your thinking.
She was a great teacher and really an amusing person to listen to in class and often makes really funny jokes. Sit up front though because if your in a lecture you wont catch anything. But do the readings! The papers are pretty simple as the majority of the people take the class for Gen Ed requirements.
First, whoever said 'hot' is WRONG. Very intelligent woman--even more closed-minded. If you want a lively debate, DON'T take this class. If you share her views (socialist-feminist) you'll love it. The readings are repetitive and many are boring. The class is a joke. Don't get me wrong--she's a very cool, very experienced person. Bad professor.
This rating won't mean much because she's leaving after the spring term. However, I found this class to be a pain. I felt the assignments were ambiguous, but maybe I am an idiot. No textbook but lots of scholarly readings. Professor is smart but often too revealing about herself. Didn't like the subject material.
Her opinions are facts, she never agrees with you, and she is one of the most close minded professors I have ever encountered. Why is she even in America if she so critical of it, get right out. If you aren't a die hard liberal that hates America, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
this professor is easily the worst one i have ever had in my life. makes the most close minded, outrageous statements and manipulates students to agree with her. nurtures students **** ideas of the white man being the devil. HORRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE TERRIBLY FRUSTRATED.
Professors like this are the reason I transferred AWAY from AU. She spent every class talking about her life experiences and how they made her a better person than us.Hates Americans, and didn't hesitate to tell us how ungrateful and stupid the people of this country are.Any opinion that differs even slightly from her own was shot down.avoid her!
I don't understand the comments here, Professor McDonic is very open to opinions and debate. She has a point of view certainly but that doesn't make her closed minded. I learned a lot in this class and found that it really opened my eyes to a lot of things. I also found her to be very helpful outside of class when needed. Great professor.
One of the smartest, most intelligent thinkers I've ever met. She has an opinion, and it's usually right. Great class, made me realize so much about the world I live in.
She is horrible, she does not respect other opinions, just bias and you get a good grade, if you have a different opinion, you fail.
One of the best professors I had. She clearly has an opinion, and she may disagree with you, but she does not discount others personal views. Tests and essays are easy to get an A on. Really interesting to talk to, especially in office hours.
I love McDonic! Her in-class discussions, movies and debates are very insightful, BUT her reading is often lengthy and difficult to understand. She expects a lot from her students, but the midterm isn't that hard and the research paper and visual assignment are both actually really fun!
Come into her classes with an open mind. She has an opinion, but does not force it upon you. If anything, she offers a great perspective to the world that college students aren't used to. I hated her at first, but i got over myself and realized that she has a lot to say that is very, very interesting. Great teacher.
Class could have been taught better. Lots of readings, but you dont have to do them, just submit questions on them. Participate a little in class and you'll do fine. Final video project is easy. Hardest thing is 10 page paper. We didnt have a final.
Pretty easy, 1 paper, midterm, and exam was a visual project and paper. I would recommend just reading it at the library because you use the book until the midterm after that you're not tested on it. I found her grading moderately tough. You watch a lot of movies. I'd say take it because it's easy, she's nice, you can get an A, and it's interesting
I highly recommend the class. McDonic started from the very core of everything and addressed larger issues only after she was sure everyone understood the foundation on which we were working. Great class. very deep.
Professor McDonic is a total sociology wonk. She was really knowledgeable and I learned a lot from her class. She can pile on the reading, but it's generally really interesting. I would definitely take class with her again.
I'm in her class right now and I think she's amazing. She's the most open and up front person I've ever met in my life. I was dreading having to take soc since I'm all about the natural sciences, but so far I love this class. I've learned more than I could ever have dreamed and its only October.
Don't miss a class because she doesn't let you make up assignments no matter what. (even if your absence is excused) Grades are returned so late that you never know how you're doing in the class until after the semester ends. Would not take class again.
Difficult assignments but she's a pretty easy grader. Prof. McDonic is really passionate about her work and it shows through her lecture. The class really makes you think about the world in a different light. (Note: There is definitely a liberal spin, but she is very open to different opinions)
Incredible. I'd like to listen to her lecture forever.
The reading was really hard and I good barely keep up with her in-class discussions. But she was a really easy grader as far as papers and projects are concerned, which were most of the grade.
McDonic made me change my major from SIS to anthropology. She's so intelligent, and very passionate about what she does. Be respectful to her and she'll do all she can to help. I definitely recommend her class.
Professor Mcdonic is an incredibly engaging lecturer and held my attention throughout the entire course - despite having a differing opinion. She is very kind and offers a unique perspective to the subject matter, especially at her office hours. I think many people mistake her passion for stark opinions - she has an open mind! Take her class!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! We heart Prof McDonic. Funny, understanding, and simply amazing.
She is one of the most kind, compassionate, and smart people you will ever meet. Go to her lectures, they will change the way you think about the world. Go to her office hours! She will commend strong arguments and offer the utmost constructive of criticisms to weaker works. She is a great resource, amazing professor, and a wonderful human being!
Great professor! Lectures are so engaging and interesting because she is so passionate about what she's teaching. Assignments are relatively straight forward and she grades pretty leniently. Readings are long and difficult, but you can honestly not do them and be fine. Overall a great class!
Interesting topic, but some lectures can get boring. A lot a lot of reading but you don't even have to do it, you'll be fine. She has a TA grade all the papers, so see the TA at office hours to make sure you will get a good grade. We watch interesting documentaries. Quizzes and papers aren't too challenging.
She admitted to knowing nothing about the material, which certainly showed. While it is not a good judge of her teaching abilities, it was easy to get by without doing any of the readings. Only a few major assignments, towards the end of the year.
She is an amazing professor! Some lectures can get a little boring, but you watch a lot of interesting documentaries. She is really passionate about the subject and it shows. There are a lot of readings but you can still do well without doing them. The assignments are straight forward and grading is lenient. Great class!
McDonic is the most passionate and caring professor I have ever had. She is genuinely interested in raising awareness of the atrocities happening in the global south, and cares deeply about her students. Enjoyed this class thoroughly and meeting McDonic. Most incredible woman, highly recommend taking Views from the 3rd World!
I am a bit biased, because I have had her before, her teaching style is perfect fir me, and the subject matter was right up my alley. But despite a surprising lack of structure in her class and sneakily tough grading, I genuinely feel like I get a lot out of her class and from her qualifications.
Prof. Mcdonic was an inspirational teacher who opened my eyes to many world issues. At first the readings seemed difficult but I got used to them (all scholarly sources, no book to buy). There's 2 quizzes, a mid year, 2 writing assignments and a project final. If you need an area 3 and also want a teacher who's down to earth, take this class
LOVE HER!!! Views was an amazing class and McDonic was a huge part of that. She is incredibly knowledgeable, has a very nuanced perspective, and she's incredibly passionate about the Global South, as well as her students. If you give this class the respect it deserves, it will change your life. McDonic gives very reasonable assignments.
McDonic Rocks. She has a really nuanced understanding of the world and she's happy to share as well as to listen. Class with her is a pleasure and even influenced me to pick up a double-major in Sociology
She is a really smart and happy professor. She makes me anxious with how her quizzes and tests are made, but if you really read and WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN during lectures, you will be great!! She is a little slow with putting grades up.
McDonic is an interesting woman. She is VERY passionate and knowledgeable about the Global South & brings a lot of her own opinions, experiences and beliefs into class lectures. She tends to go off topic a lot and the class is not very structured. Her final exam was brutal as it was subjective questions with objective answers. Shes a character..
This class was really eye-opening for me, and I truly believe that McDonic is just the right balance of knowledgable and eccentric that it really works. Her lectures during the first half of the semester were really interesting, but she seemed to lose steam by the end of the class. Her tests and quizzes can be rough, as well as the final project.
There is no midterm or final but there are two exams, a paper and Imovie project. There is a lot of reading and you have to be able to discuss them. The exams are not clear and the papers are not graded by her but by a TA..
one of the most life-changing things I've ever experienced. If you're open-minded and ready to learn I suggest you take this class. Mcdonic is the most down to earth human being I've ever encountered in my entire life. love her & wouldn't mind taking the class again
Your grade is based on two hard quizzes, one paper and an I movie project. Everything is graded really hard. You have to work very hard for your grade.
She's a great professor who obviously cares about her students and the topics. She's emotionally invested in what she teaches and it shows, with creative and engaging lectures. You really do need to take notes and pay attention during the class though, as often the material will make a great deal more sense through her interpretation.
Professor McDonic is a nice teacher who cares a lot about her students and global issues. Unfortunately, for an introductory sociology course, there is very complicated and long readings in between classes.
She's vague with her comments but isn't a bad person.
She's an amazing professor with exceptional views on the world. I love talking to her and participating in the class because she has fantastic and brilliant responses. She truly is an inspirational teacher and she defiantly the best ANTH teacher in AMERICA(n university) TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!
She is a nice person on her own time but not a good professor.
I love this woman. Her class is so easy and she is the most interesting person. I literally love her and was never bored listening to her talk. Do it for the bats..t insane stories she has about her life. I wrote one of the worst essays of my life and got an A on it. Amazing all around
She's very knowledgeable and passionate, but also incredibly opinionated and biased. Almost makes you feel bad if you don't see things the same way she does. Quizzes are difficult, but DO THE READINGS and they'll be fine. I don't think I'd take this class or her again.
Your final project for this class will be a three minute movie. This class is not a film class and knowing how to use Imovie or Adobe Premier are not prerequisites for this class. Do not take this class unless you have to for your major as it does not run like an introduction class at all. McDonic is also not good at responding to emails.
Professor McDonic is one of the best professors I have had at AU. She is very insightful and caring. Put a little bit of effort into her class and it will go a long way. She is always willing to help and is very accommodating to special circumstances . Professor McDonic is definitely one of those teachers you should get to know personally.
Professor McDonic is a great person and great professor. She will widen your world view and introduce you to things you have never known. Attendance and doing the readings is very important. She is super helpful in office hours and is willing to listen to any concerns or help you with anything you are confused about.
The only grades in this class are two papers, a test, and a final project. She is a fairly tough grader on the papers. Too demanding for an intro/gen ed class.
Personality: Loves her students and really wants them to do well. Teaching: Lecture/reading-heavy! Grading: Fairly-tough grader. Examples of the weight of assignments: 1st Exam: 15% 2nd Exam: 20% 1st Paper: 20% Final Project - 25% Ultimately, the course is too demanding for a 100 level gen ed class.
I took this class just to fill my credits and it was the worst decision I have made. If you are not interested in the topic of this course and do not want to read anything relating to this topic, do not take it. You get graded on a few things for the whole semester and you seriously need to read the min. 20 page readings to pass your papers/exams.
She is very creative, open and supportive. Very well recommended.
She is disorganized and really hard to reach out of class and doesn't give specific instruction, but if you reach her somehow at office hours she can be helpful!
Despite preaching openness as one of her most valued qualities, Prof. McDonic is not open to opinions that are not her own. If you disagree with her, she will immediately dismiss you and not give you the chance to defend your point. We also spent the entire time watching movies to the point where I felt I could've taken the class in my dorm room.
Really nice Professor who does care about students and is accommodating. She doesn't give clear guidelines on papers but is a tough grader. Assigns lots of reading for a 200 level class.
Prob the worst professor in AU. Take anyone else but not her. She is so disorganized and arrogant.
she didn't grade anything until the literal last day of the session so the entire time we had no idea how we were doing. this was especially tough when she said "this was just a crappy paper" attached with one of the biggest paper grades so :( def don't take this as a habits of mind bc it's more work and more annoying to deal with than it should be
The most ridiculous teacher I ever had in my entire life! I don't know if the teacher herself is incredible or it's because of the online instruction. We spend the first 3 classes learning how to upload videos through canvas; and the last 3 classes meditating. If you want to explore some awkwardness, come! She even failed making multiple choices.
This teacher required way too much work for simply a gen-ed class. Avoid if possible.
Gives way too much work for a habit of mind course. Harsh grader. She's very nice but not a great prof. Avoid
First of all, she's an extremely rude person and professor. Didn't have office hours (which are required) and takes a week to reply to emails. No rubrics for huge papers and grades them harshly. Additionally, assigns so many papers but takes years to grade them or makes the TA do it. Makes me upset that I paid tuition to attend this class.
This professor is horrible, she is rude and hypocritical to what she says she stands for, especially being a sociology teacher. She is extremely opinionated, offers no genuine feedback, grades extremely hard for no reason and assigns readings/papers as if it were a graduate level sociology class. Impossible to reach, and has double standards.
She is a bit lenient with deadlines but that's the only good thing about her as a prof. No rubric for any assignment, no feedback until the day before grades due, too many assignments, & too many movies watched. She means well but her opinions can be problematic. Always unprepared and will hold students to standards that we can't expect in return
If you liked super disorganized classes, take this one! Got back from Thanksgiving break and hadnt received ANY grades for ANY assignments! We took 30 mins to do ice breakers instead of talking about class topics. She never told us what she wanted then got mad when it wasn't what she wanted. Honestly, I feel like I wasted money taking this.
Was definitely a difficult class with high expectations for a 100 level sociology class. However I know she was passionate and talented. I enjoyed taking her class despite the difficulty and would take her again.
