She is a great professor of english, get her talking and the rest will be easy!!
Dr. Mckay is a genius. She's really a bright lady and you learn a lot from her. Warning, she's very sensitive. A bad rating could send her off the edge.
Good teacher, but damn could she pick more favorites? Guaranteed if you make it on her "naughty" instead of her "nice" list she will make your life hell.
Excellent teacher, both concise and understandable in her lectures. She does seem to take offence with people talking in her class... I found this annoying because she would stop frequently to stop them and would just cause more noise, just let them talk who cares they will probly fail anyway.
Her course for grammar, style, and usage was the worst class I have ever had on this campus. She is constantly late and then tries to make up for lost time by keeping her students late. She is completely random in her lessons and more than once she had a break down and left class.
Brilliant professor. Dr. McKay knows her stuff and she is very good at what she does. Students who are interested in learning will enjoy her class because they will be listening to her. Students who talk in her class are burned at the cross. Just be a big boy/girl and you'll be fine.
McKay is thoughtful and thought provoking. The reading she assigns is good stuff. She introduced me to an author that has become one of my favorites. Her class discussions are also stimulating and insightful.
she was really easy. Only 3 papers and it seemed like everybody got 100% on them. And all assingments pretty much you do in class. 50 point extra credit Final. She is a little crazy but her easiness totally compinsates for it.
I had Dr. Mckay for a phonetics/syntax class and I have to say that she is brilliant. The class was very hard and she expected a lot out of us, but every minute spent working on this class was worth it. She did show up to late quite a bit but her reasons are understandable. She is a very good teacher who knows just about everything.
Good Teacher Kind of late and spacey but really good and works great with your schedule. Really wants students to do well.
Students are right, she definitely is incredibly smart, but has a very hard time bestowing that knowledge to her students. She does not use a textbook, and when students ask for clarification she seems to get upset and incinuate they must not have been listening. She is not personable whatsoever. Teaching just isn't what she was meant to do.
Susan is a very smart professor, but was always 10-15 minutes late to class and keeps you 5-10 minutes later. If you attend class, and do the exercises she assigns and take notes, you'll get a good grade.
easy course. only write 3 papers and she helps you out with a lot of them. she cancels class a lot in advance so you don't have class that much.
Classic case of absent-minded professor. She is brilliant with everything, even beyond her topic, and is highly entertaining to learn from. She is unspecific about what is due and when, but she went over all our assign. in class, and we all got 100%. Sometimes late to class - don't panic!
Even though her class was way easy, it was also a waste of time. It's hard not to fall asleep because all she does is talk. I didn't learn anything new but a lot of people do like her because her class is so easy.
Great teacher, very helpful and knows how to teach English well. Very highly recommend :))
this class is super easy. due dates are flexible and as long as you turn something in you'll get at least a c. go to class and do the papers and you wont get lower than a b.
She is a great teacher-Highly recommended. Not very hard
This class was seriously a joke. Class was canceled more then it was held. She was late 10 minutes to class every time. Only two papers that were way easy to do. Take this class if you don't want homework and don't want any stress.
She is very nice and willing to help, but always late for class! She gives A LOT of notes- I suggest a recorder or laptop for the notes. Test are easy, but you need to ASK QUESTIONS if you don't understand in class!
Susan McKay is an okay teacher. She is easy on grading because she realizes everyone isn't a great writer. She does a lot of in class writing assignments, and requires you to show up for class, but she gives a lot of time off in her class. She is a boring lecturer. She says "ummm" and "you know" a lot. Sign the role and leave some days.
This class was pretty easy with a few easy papers and assignments. You could pretty much bs all the assignments and get an A.
Dr. McKay is a genius. Literally. I think she speaks 7 languages somewhat fluently. She's an excellent professor. I've taken several classes from her. They were hard, but I learned so much. Isn't that what we're going to college for? I always got A's because I showed up to class, took notes, and studied. If you want to learn, take a class from her.
She's a nice teacher. She teaches really clearly. Recommended to anyone. She added a touch of humor few times.
It seems like its all she can do to come to teach the class prepared to teach. She is always 10 minutes late, leaving the class sitting on the floor by the classroom. She never has told us what assignments we are going to have for the class. Always disorganized. We never know what to expect because things always change from what she said previously
She shouldn't be teaching. It's not what she is meant to do. Classic example of knowing your stuff not making you a proficient teacher. She doesn't have her head on straight. Also expect a few temper tantrums. I felt she was disrespectful when I had the audacity to ask if she was going to give us a paper that tells us what assignments we will have.
Ten-fifteen minutes late to class and totally spacey. This year, she managed not to keep us too late. The material can be enlightening, but it is repetitive, almost like one genre only. "Remembering." Just turn in assignments and sign the roll and you should be fine. You might fall asleep if you don't have some Coke.
Very nice and dead smart! She will work with you if you talk to her. Takes attendance. For the 1010 class we only had three major papers. As for "tantrums," I only ever saw her angry ONCE when some idiot answered her phone in class and started having a conversation with her boyfriend. Use your brain and you'll be fine.
We only had to write 2 papers, the longest one only had to be 5 pages. However she goes on and on about what she expects for the paper. she spent like a month just explaining (and repeating) on how she wanted the paper. She does take role every time and we only used the book to see MLA format for the references on a paper.
i took her english 2010 and drama 2290. I LOVE HER. her grading is base on if you really tired or not. she isnt picky on your writing style either. attending class is a must b/c it makes up alot of ur grade.this class is a relaxing class. and i learned a lot as well. i highly recommend her.
Great class for a general. you just write papers based upon stuff from your life. she edits them in class so you know what she wants to see for the final draft. no tests/quizzes. attendance is graded but she's pretty understanding if you make up an excuse.
Terrible professor! DO NOT ask questions...she gets very pissy and throws a fit if anyone interrupts her to ask a question or if you ask her a question that she was going to answer later on in class that makes her mad too. This was a linguistics class and probably the dumbest class I have ever taken. Very confusing and she flies right through it
Susan was very nice and helpful; wanted students to do well but work hard. I highly recommend taking from her (I had her for 1010 and 2010 and I loved both of the classes!!)
Easiest professor I have ever had. I was late all the time, but so was she. She would randomly cancel class, which I didn't mind. There were hardly any papers and she gave you FOREVER for each one. Very lenient on due dates. She is very smart and knows her stuff, don't buy the book you will never open it.
She tends to be a little disorganized on due dates, but her class is very relaxed. There are papers to write on plays, but they are super easy to write. You get to watch movies during class. This is the perfect class to take if you have a demanding schedule. Professor Mckay is very nice and understanding. She grades the papers very generously.
yes i got an A, but she is horrible teacher. she does NOT respect student at all
McKay is an awful teacher and constantly changes the syllabus. Plus there is no textbook or supplemental text making her class just ridiculous. She is rude, has tantrums in class, and has no idea how to teach. Lectures are mostly rambles that leave you with no idea of what to study. Terrible teacher!
So hard to listen to, which made class boring.
This class was a little to easy. It was a little disappointing. She is very nice and willing to help and answer questions. The work load is very light.
Great Professor, as a class there is not a lot of discussion because Dr. McKay's lectures take most of the time. But, homework was perfect just enough to rack the brain but not too much to overwhelm you. She was helpful, but wasn't available all the time; but lets you know when she is available. I would highly recommend this class!
Great teacher. At first, the course seems difficult but as the semester continues you will find that there is not much of a challenge after listening and taking notes during McKay's lectures. Great teacher overall.
Lecture style. Little class discussion. Take home tests. I really learned the subject matter. She KNOWS her stuff! She's also realllly funny!! I can't wait to take her again!
You only do sentence diagramming. Took ENGL3030 as a Thursday night class. 1st class she was 20 min late, 2nd week she was 45 min late, & 3rd week canceled class after we'd waited 30 min. Going 2 weeks without instruction is unacceptable! She desperately needs to be on Canvas, could have posted lots of examples to help us with on Canvas :( Too bad.
Dr. McKay is extremely knowledgeable. Although her lectures tend to be long and she often goes on a stray tangent, she has an engaging way of speaking and seems to have a good sense of humor. This class was a little tough, but as long as you show up for her lectures, do her assigned exercises, and ask for help when you need it, you'll pass.
Dr. McKay is the worst professor I have ever had. She does not care about your time at all. While taking her night class, she would usually take a break for 30-60min to grade your assignments, while your still sitting in her class. She doesn't require a book (yay $$$ except not) she is too smart to teach lowly students. She doesn't make sense.
Dr. McKay is a nice lady with good intentions. Class lectures are LONG and repetitive. Lots of in class time is wasted. She assigns three essays, and some in class work each day. Easy class. Received no feedback, it is finals week and I still have not gotten any of my work handed back to me yet. Doesn't use canvas so good luck guessing your grade.
She was kind of all over the place this semester, but took responsibility for it and gave students more time to get work done. Taking notes is MANDATORY!! But really everything you'll be tested on is given to you in class. As long as you show up, you'll succeed.
Dr. McKay was awesome. She really cares if you succeed and is always willing to help. There is a lot of work, but it is substantial. There are 4 main paper-projects, and as long as everyone stays on the same page, she won't fall behind and the end of the semester will run smoothly.
I thought it was pretty easy, but a bit of work with all of the papers we had to write. They weren't very long and she helped with reviewing it before turning it in. The essays were all different, so you're able to learn a wide variety of essay types. Weird class, but definitely worth it, especially for my minor/major.
Prof. Mckay is a very nice lady. Very old school, she doesn't use canvas. You have an assignment in class everyday but most things can be finished before you leave. The essays are short and the work load is low.
Does the professor really want you to learn, and do they purposely make it harder than it has to be? Dr. McKay earned a yes, and a no. Material was often difficult, but a great teacher will guide you throughshe did. Her patience and understanding are unparalleled, considering her intelligence and longevity. I registered for another class with her.
Susan is quite funny, I thought. She is VERY smart. She knows everything there is to know about the English language, for sure. Doesn't give very many assignments to hand in- mostly tests. BUT. IF you take notes on everything she writes on the board and things that sound important, you will get high scores on your tests every time. She is lovely!
Her biggest downside is she doesn't do anything online, so it is almost impossible to reach her by email, no canvas, all assignments are physical. However, she's super passionate about what she teaches, and she acknowledges that even if you don't talk much in class, you're still participating in your own way, if your assignments reflect that.
she's means well. but her freakin lectures are the worst. I fell asleep like 30 times. got called out for having my phone out. She really is a good person nice to have a conversation with. easy A along as you show up. I bought the book and used it like twice.
One of my favorite professors. She's got a great sense of humor and the lectures were enjoyable. She's very clear on what she expects in assignments, so as long as you do what's expected, you will pass the class. We did use the textbook, but if you take any upper level English classes the same textbook is used, so you don't have to buy it again.
One of the worst professors I have taken a class from at Weber State. Lectures are long and jump around leaving you confused on the material. She hands out assignments and automatically expects you to know how to do them. If you fall behind good luck catching up. I ended up dropping the course. I will find another to take its place. Not worth it.
Dr. McKay is one of my favorite professors! She explains things quickly, but very well. A lot of test answers are taken directly from class notes, so take lots of notes! Very forgiving grader, gives fascinating lectures, and goes over practice problems in class. Textbook is free online as a pdf. Awesome professor, and a really fun, engaging class.
Her syllabus was completely unclear and confusing. She kept referencing online material but wouldnt tell us where we could find said material. She doesnt use Canvas and gets annoyed when you speak to her outside class. She yelled at another student in front of the class without any warning or provocation.
Overall an easy class to get 2010 credit. Gives clear grading criteria and allows you to meet with her to edit your essays before submission. Downside is that she is pretty disorganized, so if you aren't personally organized- I wouldn't recommend taking this class. If you just stay on top of assignments and give some effort though its an easy A.
I love Dr. McKay! She truly loves what she's teaching and she's hilarious. Be prepared to take a ton of notes, but if you take enough, you should do well on the quizzes and tests. Try to be there for every class or you won't know what you're doing.
Dr. McKay is smart, dont get me wrong, but she should have been forced to retire YEARS ago. This class is hard. She doesnt use Canvas, cant work a computer, and wont tell you your grade until the end of class. She doesnt care about students and got mad at us for asking questions in class. Avoid Susan McKay at all costs.
I didnt know my grade at a single point throughout this class. Its the last week of the semester, I still dont know what grade Im going to get. When campus closed due to covid, I received maybe 3 emails from her total. None of them explained requirements, just said how hard it was for her to do things digitally. If you can, find another professor.
Dr. McKay is my favorite professor that I've had here at Weber. She cares about her students, wants them to succeed, and explains the material really well. As long as you participate in class, the assignments and tests are easy, and Dr. McKay provides a lot of extra credit opportunities. You can tell she knows her stuff and enjoys teaching it.
Doesn't use canvas. Very lecture heavy, your notes and the hand outs she gave were the textbook for this class, so don't miss class! Work really hard at the homework & the exams are fairly easy. If you don't do well on tests she lets you retake them (diff but similar questions) and has extra credit on last test. She wants you to succeed.
I think the hardest part is her not using canvas. She doesn't really tell you when assignments are due and doesn't most them on canvas so you can check which makes it hard to get done on time. Class is all lecture and then you usually have to write something at the end of class. Her essays aren't hard either! This is a fairly easy course.
Not the most entertaining in class but Dr. McKay is very reasonable and will work with you. If you do all the assignments correctly you should have no problem getting a good grade. Lectures can be boring but homework is pretty easy and she gives class time to do it. Not at all a hard class.
I have previously taken Susan for English 1010 and she is amazing! She lectures a lot and it seems like a lot but its really not and she will answer any questions you have. She goes over your essays and makes sure they are good to go when you turn in. As long as you know how to write pretty well you will definitely pass!
Do not recommend. I have this class during covid and she was very difficult to deal with these circumstances. I had to go full online due to my work and hopes all my professors would understand. She didn't understand and finally agreed to let me go online, but it took me a whole month of emailing to get her to grade me assignments.
I absolutely love this teacher! My one complaint is I wish the lectures were more organized so I could take better notes, but she is so interested in history and makes it interesting for us as well.
Professor McKay is wonderful. She makes you work for your grade. You have to come to class and pay attention to her lectures otherwise you will fall behind. She notices if you work hard, and she will work with you. She cares about her students and wants them to learn. I will be taking a yet a third class with Ms. McKay.
Dr. McKay is what I dream all my professors could be. You go in, get supplemental paperwork, listen to the lecture, take notes, then do some worksheets. The sheets are generally graded on a "you're here" basis, then tests are formally graded. Great class, super informational. If you miss the lecture, you miss the notes and won't pass. She's great!
Ms. Mckay I such a wonderful human being. She is a great professor; she cares about her students. I like how on her exams, she lets you take them home and use your notes.
Prof. McKay's class was easy, but her lectures could be boring at times. She enjoys what she does, and wants you to succeed. She does not like to use canvas, and prefers to use paper assignments/pass outs. She doesn't give busy work, and as long as you listen closely in class, her grading criteria will be clear and you'll pass with an A.
For some, Mckay's class can be enjoyable. She is very old school and does almost everything on paper, so be prepared for that. The lectures were long and kind of repetitive. She spent most of the time reading passages and essays to demonstrate what she wants to be written in your essays.
Don't bother buying the textbooks, she doesn't use them and if she does they're shown on the board. I only did the final and one other assignment so I'm pretty sure she doesn't actually grade just gives A's. She's extremely boring and constantly says um. She gets mad if you even look at your watch during lecture. Wouldn't take again.
Dr. McKay is an excellent tenured professor. She is very old school and does not really use Canvas. Prefers hand-written and hard copy papers for her class. She cares about her students. Listen to her lectures and attend. There is a textbook for the class, but whenever it was needed she put it on the projector, I did not need to buy it.
Dr. McKay is a good English prof. overall. Her lectures can get a little long and I found myself occasionally getting lost from jumping topics too many times. You write lots of papers, as expected, but they aren't very long. She makes the grading criteria very clear but doesn't use canvas and didn't get any grades until the last week of classes.
Her lectures were MIND-NUMBINGLY boring. She seems to care a lot about linguistics, but I struggled with connecting to the material, which made this class hard to attend. She packs a lot of information into each class period, and you have to write it all down if you want to pass the tests. Also, she refuses to use Canvas.
Dr. McKay was consistently 10-15 minutes late for every class. She kept the class late and has no respect for students' time. Abrasive whenever students ask questions. Does not know how to use Canvas. It is the last week of the semester and I still have no idea what my grade is for this class because no grades are posted yet. Avoid this professor.
Dr. McKay is an amazing professor, especially if you have more than a passing interest in the subject matter. As a linguistics minor, I really enjoyed her course and she helped me figure out how I want to prepare for careers in the future.
There was a point where I stopped attending class because it was so uninteresting and I never learned anything. Doesn't grade through Canvas so I wasn't sure what my grade was until after the semester ended. You're graded on 3 essays and a few other things, but those 3 essays are mandatory to pass the class.
I enjoyed Dr. Mckay's class but she isn't for everyone. She talks a lot and very slowly but is also super funny. Most assignments are done in class but there were a lot of papers. Also, she doesn't grade on Canvas so I didn't know my grade on anything until finals week which was a little stressful. If you can handle that you'll like the class.
Do NOT take this professor, it will be a nightmare! She's often 10-15 minutes late. Everything is on paper, which isn't bad, but she also never uses email, Canvas, and is unapproachable. Her tests are very difficult, and lectures are filled with jargon too high for an intro class. Most of the students dropped out in the first week.
If you look up this professors name online, you will see an article about sheep. Everything in that article is true, even nearly 20 years later.
If you're okay with not knowing your grade until the end of the semester, this class is for you. It's and easy A if you show up every day and do your homework. It doesn't even need to be done that good, just turn it in.
Dr. Mckay is not the most terrible, but I wouldn't take her class again. Everything is done in person on paper so it is mandatory to be in class. She gets distracted easily. Not a single grade was input on canvas the entire semester, so you wont know your grade until the end. SO BAD at answering emails. Assignments are easy though, still an easy A.
Respectfully, she needs to retire. Super nice and caring but you won't see a single grade on canvas until finals, teaches like you're in high school and have never taken an english course, and often shows up 10 min late. I never had to email her but I doubt she would respond based on how much she hates technology. Very easy A, very boring class.
I really enjoyed Dr.McKay's classes. Yes, the lectures were sometimes long and there would be a lot of sidebar topics of conversation, but if you can understand what she wants you to do for assignments, you'll be totally fine. She also speaks French for any of you Francophiles. It was awesome to get to speak it with her sometimes.
