You'll fail, unless you do the practice questions on your cd-rom..
is stupid!! don't take her class
DO NOT TAKE HER!! YOU WILL FAIL!!!!
don't even go to class, just read from the book
don't go to class; read the book + everything's cool
let me see, 1-don't go to class, 2-read the book, 3-avoid her class if possible and u'll be fine
her class sucks, but shes there when you need the help. i recommend not taking her!
go to class and take notes and read the book and if you fail it, it's own damn fault ****.
Lecture is not helpful. Read the book instead. Take anyone else but her.
Bad teacher, can't give good lectures, don't take her class. She thinks she's part british and speaks like an idiot. She sucks.
Horrible teacher. skip class everyday but test and quiz days and just read and KNOW the book. tests on really picky stuff but the final is relatively easy compared to regular tests (and will be worth 40% if you do well!)
Lectures are of no use. Tests are extremely hard and picky. You are better off skipping lecture and just studying the book.
Tests are very hard, read the book and know all the little details. I recommend not taking her.
once you get used to her voice and pronounciation youll be ok. (thats if you study your notes.) i make flash cards for tests. tests are on her material so dont miss class. 5 question pop quizzes for attendence.
i would recommend not taking her. her tests are killers! she gives good notes and trys to explain everything but she always adds the exact details out of the book which arent in the notes. plus u only have a few grades in the class so if u mess up u fail
more than half the class fails her class, she cant teach worth sh.it, but study your notes and the book, it helps a lot to go and talk to her, i failed every exam, and did good on the final and got a B
the woman has major issues. do NOT speak to her directly before class or she will B**** you out. i had more of a problem with her than i did the class. most exciting day was the lecture on birds...don't miss that one
she is a bad teacher due to the fact i do not know if i am passing or failing cause when i ask she will not tell me what my grade is.
Her class sucks anus. If you take this class plan on studying 30 hrs a week. Dr. McRae should definitely make her tests easier and she is supposed to curve the grades if 3/4 of the class is failing, which she doesn't. I do love her accent though.
She teaches straight from the book. Read the book and study your notes. She is not hard! It is a lot of material to, basically, memorize, but it is not hard.
She goes on and on about phyla that no body really needs to know.. Her classes are boring and her tests are extremly hard. DONT TAKE HER!! I used to love biology untill i had her!
all i have to say is dont take her
Goes off on tangents, has problem getting straight to the point. Unclear, irritating accent, although very knowledgeable on birds.
Horrible teacher..skips around ALOT...her exams are very particular..don't take this class unless you absolutely have to!
Super nice, but doesn't explain material well. Tests don't correspond to lecture notes!
Pretty easy class. Her tests are particular but she curves.
An awesome lady, wants her students to do well, very helpful. have a positve outlook and you'll do well. attend all lectures, test come right from her notes. slightly british.
Very hard to understand b/c of accent and her tests are very hard. If you are to take her be prepared to study ALOT!!!! NO extra credit.
She goes off topic a lot and her tests or terrible. Nothing at all like her lecture notes. I hate the way she says again, like a gain.
Take detailed notes..STUDY! Attend class and listen to little details, quzzies are pretty hard, no extra credit.
terrible..boring, sorta canadian/british accent..dont bother going to class, read on your own, you'll get the same grade. take tests, dont study for them, it's the little stuff.. tests..ehh.. wish i took 1100 first, not too simple.. made for ppl who read everything twice. not recommended
McRae is an "ok" teacher. Very organized, but can not answer questions when asked in the class. She's out on maternity leave and her t/a is horrible! Don't go to class, read the textbook chapters listed on the syllabus and you should do fine.
She is a very nice lady but can't teach to save her life. Her current T/A sucks and the tests are terrible. Don't pay attention to the notes, read and memorize everything in the book. The majority of the class is failing which sucks because anyone in the class needs it for their major.
Definetly a hard course. Isn't bad if you study. Yes, this means you have to read and comprehend the material! She's not that bad if you really get to know her, and you can't blame nobody but yourself if you do bad. Just be ready to committ yourself to this class and dont take it easy!!!
She was gone most of the semester to have a baby but she was better than the TA that took over. Her tests are from the notes but are pretty hard. JUST STUDY and you should get a B.
Really hard class, but Dr. Mcrae knows her stuff. Don't take this class unless your willing to study everynight.
her tests are really hard, no extra credit, MUST read anyways. the lab is the only thing that got me through this class. the TA's (just as boring) tests were A LOT easier. mrs. mcrae must have read the bio book a million times b/c the questions are "that 1 sentence on that 1 page," NOT RECOMMENDED!!

VERY MEAN! She does not want to see her students do well.
i had to drop the class on the last drop day. horrible teacher. teaches to fast. makes u study 3-4 chpts for 10 question quizzes. i studied evrything for the exam, i knew it all & still failed the 40 question multiple choice exam. the questions were asked wrong and there could have been multiple answers. you're a fool if u take mcrae's class.
McRae is the worst teacher I have ever had. Ok, some lazy people come on here and rate good professors poorly; however this is not the case with her. She does everything in her power to make things 100x harder than they need to be, she's not for the students, but against them. Her test are off the wall, and impossible! Don't take her period!
HARD! NOT EASY! LOTS OF STUDYING! She isnt clear, its that one line in the book you forget to read is what she tests you on!
Worst teacher i've had at ECU! She gives quizzes on stuff she doesn't really go over, askss mc questions wierd...tests are horrible, no good way to study for them. trust me, it's not that i'm lazy, i studied for hours for all of her tests! and still am just making a B...she's not a good professor!
McRae can be pretty specific on her tests and quizzes, but enough studying makes it wasy to pass the class with a good grade.
She is very smart and nice woman. but here tests are crazy. i've been working so hard and studied non- stop but i was still below average.on each quiz class average is 50-60. She didnt cover test material during the lectures.
Don't take her! She knows her stuff but no matter how hard you study, it doens't make a difference. Her tests are impossible. And even when you think you do good, you still fail. Good luck if you get her!

this professor is a nice person, but I would not recommend her if you are not a person who does not take test and quizzes seriously because they could cause you to go down a letter grade. It is important that you come to class or else you will become completely lost.
Hard teacher! Make sure you go to class because for the quizzes, all the information is from the notes that she says during class. Knows what she is talking about and is not a bad teacher. Does not give exam reviews or test reviews.
She is a very nice lady who loves to teach. Biology is not suppossed to be easy ,so how you do is up to you. I will say though, that you should really read and know the book.Sometimes things that were not discused in detail in the lecture show up on the tests and that can be frustrating but overall I would say she is not that bad.
Take GOOD notes, and know them ALL by heart. All tests are based off of the notes.
If you want to pass this class with an A, be ready to work extremly hard. if u are a freshman and barely did any work in high school, this class will give u a slap in the face....do not take her unless u are willin to read 20 or more pages per day, since the tests come from the units not chapter by chapter. and be a good note taker!
This is a really hard class!!! it would be interesting, but she does not do a good job of explaining things. the tests are hard, so take really good notes!! and pay attention to the quiz questions. it requires alot of work, so don't slack of any or you will end up in trouble.
She is very hard. If you are going to take this class, be sure to read your book and work extra hard. She does not go over a lot of material on quizes and test, so you have look it up in your book. Plus i cant stand her "trans-atlantic" accent.
she's an okay teacher and hard to focus on. she just throws me off track by the way she talks and when she wirtes stuff on the board its really confusing. she'll start talking about something, go on to somethin else and and then go bak so ur notes are all unorganized and she'll try to connect concepts with big long arrows goin across the board.
She is a nice person, but her notes are slightly confusing. She only tests on what she covered in class, but you still need to read to understand everything. It's not an easy ride, and she doesn't give any extra credit, or curve on tests. but, if you're willing to work hard, you can do good in her class.
Dr. McRae is great. She is a very intelligent woman and knows what shes talking about, which makes it easier to learn the material...She goes out of her way to create Practice tests before the real test, and study sessions for the exams. She's tough and doesn't curve or give extra credit but i would still reccomend her class esp. for BIO majors!
Dr. McRae seems to be a nice woman. Overall I think that she tries her best to explain the material for clear understanding. She can be unclear at times but otherwise I would recommend her as a teacher. I failed the first test due to lack of studying but I passed the last two. Studying and good notetaking will get you a good grade in this class.
worst teacher i have ever had. very hard. will never take her again. i have never got below a B in college and i got a D by a few points. does not curve and test and quizes are really hard even if you study
She is not a good teacher at all, she is really hard teacher and she doesn't explain things at all and her test and quizes are even harder. She doesn't help you out at all no curve or extra credit points. So get a different techer if you can!!
She is a really great teacher. Puts in a lot of effort in explaining the material. Lectures a lot, so going to class will be helpful. Study your notes and you will do fine in her class.
I don't really know how people think Mrs.McRae is hard; their ratings aren't fair to her either! It's not a freebie class, but if you listen and take notes in class it's almost impossible to make below a B...unless you're an idiot of course. *Tests come straight from NOTES! Better to attend class than reading text!
She is absolutely HORRIBLE!! Don't take her! If you do...you are just asking to fail! Quiz averages were always around 40. Does that tell you anything? Test averages were about 50-60. You do the math. The only thing that saved me was the final. The final was so much easier than the other tests, but still...don't take the class!
Great Teacher... yes, tests and quizes do average pretty low, but that's because there're a bunch of people in there that shouldn't be (dumb ones). Tests and Quizes come straight from notes and lectures--no tricky stuff. I highly recommend this teacher, unless you're one of those who can't memorize you s*** and apply it. Awesome teacher.
She is not a bad professor. Here is a suggestion: Read the chapter before coming to class and read your notes after lecture. When preparing for her exams, read the chapter and use her old tests as guides and not for possible test questions. If you do that then you will do well in her class.
She is very nice. She tries to make sure that you understand what is going on. Very educated, she knows her stuff. Her quizes and test are not that bad, if you know the material. Read the book and study then you will do just fine. If you don't then you will fail the class hard and fast!
She is a very nice person and people tend to not pay attention to her which is rude. Her tests are hard, so you need to study for them! Even when you think you are ready you probably are not.
She is a great teacher. Very good teacher but very hard! Test and quizes were difficult. All you have to do is STUDY and you will be ok.
Good, but difficult teacher. Thought her testing methods were a little unfair. Multiple choice, but all the answers seem right. There will be miniscule differences between answers. A grad student gave me this advice and it got me a B in the class: "Go to class. Write down everything she says. Memorize it." If you miss a class, it's gonna hurt
DON'T TAKE THIS ClASS!!! she is the worst teacher ever , she does not explain anything, and the test/quizzes are extremely hard and all the class grades averaged from 40-50!! Also she has a bad temper!! No matter how hard you study and think you did good on the test it always comes back as failing or a very low grade!!! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
She's obviously smart, but is not a good teacher. She still thinks that she's at Cambridge, teaching smart Brits. Likes to tell you that you don't need to know something, but continues on anyway. Textbook optional, but tests on it anyway. Not recommended. Problem: she's the only professor for biol 1200. I received a B in this class btw.
Dr. McRae knows her stuff and is very nice. You do have to study hard for her quizes and tests. I would recommend her classes.
While you are taking her class you don't like her because she is hard, very hard, but in the end you realize you learned a lot. If you study quite a bit and try your hardest you'll come out with a C or B. You have memorize a lot, but biology is for people who have good memory.
Dr. McRae is very knowledgeable about Biology, but she can't seem to relate the subject to students in an appropriate way. She is very nice as a person, but her class is difficult. The tests and quizzes are very, very hard. If you go to class and study, you'll make a B.
Ms. McRae is a very sweet and understanding teacher! Attendance is mandatory but the material is a lot easier if you go to class. Be sure to take VERY detailed notes, because she test on the smallest details. You are required to memorize a LOT and to study even more! Be ready to work hard!
If animal behavior is your interest, Dr. M. is awesome. She teaches in a structured manner and uses a variety of media to deliver instruction. She is conducting ongoing research but still extremely helpful if you ever have a question. Timely feedback;help if you ask for it. One of the best in the Biology dept. Pay attention and do your work!
Good teacher. Class is a bit boring. Tests are multiple choice. I can't stand her accent because sometimes it sounds fake. Other than that, okay teacher.
She was very unhelpful and did not want to be bothered, she was often confusing and I had to use the book often because I was so lost, and the lab manual she wrote required us to find most of the information someplace other than lecture, lab, book, or lab manual. So in other words... google.com got me through this class.
I would not recommend Susan McRae. She is rude to the students and other staff, she does not seem comfortable teaching, and the lab manual she wrote was awful. The manual was confusing and the class and book did not have information needed to do the lab. She was never available and did not want to be bothered. Google got me through this class.
Good professor. Material is difficult b/c a lot of info is covered, but she was always willing to answer any questions I had through email/office hours. Optional tutorial sessions... very helpful. Three main tests (All MC). Six quizzes throughout semester & drops lowest. 100 question final, all MC, and is definition based). Study and you'll do well
unless you enjoy spending every night/day cooped up in your house/apartment/dorm, I highly recommend taking a different professor. shes smart, but is not great at getting the material across. the exams will make you want to quit college, and as far as asking her for help, she will ONLY talk to you in office hours, and GOOD LUCK finding her there
DO NOT TAKE SUSAN MCRAE!! she is not helpful and she has a bad attitude. She makes it clear that she is too busy to help students. Her office hours were ONE day a week(on a friday). Overall I regret taking her. If you can find someone else please save yourself.
I've had Dr. McRae for Bio 1200 and 3740 and I really like her. Her tests are tough but she puts all of her ppts online. If you ask her for help she's happy to answer any questions. I've even seen her allow somebody, in 1200, who overslept on a test date take the test later that day. All they just came to her office, explained, and asked her.
Good Teacher but I her test were confusing. If you study power points and write everything she writes on the board will help a lot. While she doesnt really check attendance if you want to do good in the class you have to go everyday. Depending on how well you do on the final there is a chance to improve you final up a letter grade.
Overall I liked her. Her class was directly from the book. Very interesting subject for me personally. I learned something and really enjoyed the class. We only had a midterm and a final and the tests overall were not bad, but they were very long and consisted almost entirely of essay and short answer type questions.
Great class for those who want to know more about birds. I thought the class was pretty easy. The lab portion was not bad but the taxonomy is a bit challenging. Must know many families and orders. Obviously easier if you have some previous knowledge. Lots of cool field trips. One midterm, one final, one lab practical, few misc assignments.
This was my favorite class EVER. Lab practicals were on herp, bird, and mammmal identification and required some SERIOUS studying, but I think we all ended up doing well. Final was essay questions on broad concepts. Lectures were easy to understand and tied in well with what we saw in the field. Dr. McRae was a great teacher and i learned a lot.
While she is a challenging professor, she is fair. If you see her during office hours, she will help you out. She holds you to high standards, expects you to pay attention to her during lectures, and to attend class. Her quizzes and tests are mostly based off of her lectures, which are interesting. This class is good preparation for medical school.
I don't recommend taking Dr. McRae. She clearly knows a lot about biology, but she is not the best teacher. She gets confused and rambles a lot. Her tests are also very complicated and hard to understand. She gives a lot of opportunities to make a good grade, but you have to study A LOT and take extremely detailed notes in class.
I've taken 3 of Dr. McRae's courses so far, and I think she's a great professor. As someone else stated below, she holds students to high standards. You'll love any of her courses if you're seriously interested in learning about the subject, but do NOT go in expecting an easy A. You HAVE to pay attention and study in order to do well.
Dr. McRae is a really great professor and very smart. She LOVES birds, which can get repetitive in power points because a lot of the studies are on birds. If you skip class, you'll miss a lot of material. She gives a midterm and final (cumulative) and they are tough. Taking good notes was the key for me. A few papers are assigned, isn't easy grader
Super Easy A. Take Bio 1201 with this class, it's the key to passing with an A, you learn a lot in Lab, that almost directly applies to what you learn in class (She wrote the Lab Manuals). She's very knowledgeable and if you pay attention you'll pass with a decent grade no problem. SI sessions are not helpful. Course Material is very basic biology.
Test is 8 pages of short answers & essays, no multiple choice but the material is something that has been mentioned in class. lectures are boring and very dry, not student inclusive at all. McRae grades harshly so put your best foot forward. she gives no leeway at all. she will not help you if you approach her outside office hours.
Susan McRae's class require a great deal of studying in order to make a decent grade. She does her best to present the information in class in a way that makes it easy to understand but because there is so much material you will have to go on your own time and fill in your notes. Her tests are very thorough and very specific.
Very hard exams and quizzes must read the book and take constant notes to pass a quiz or exam
Very disorganized in both her lectures and assignments. Does not give much detail on assignment criteria before tearing you to shreds. Little feedback on written assignments.
Dr. McRae is very passionate about the subject, but she can be very difficult to follow. The material is extremely difficult and there is TONS to remember. There weren't many grades other than tests and quizzes which were all very specific. I made an A- but that is only because I studied for hours almost daily.
McRae is one of the worst biology professors at ECU. She gives quizzes frequently that cover absurdly specific, unimportant material. Her exams and quizzes don't test your knowledge, but more so try to trick you. Her powerpoints aren't very organized and she spends little time on important info. If the class average is a 50%, don't expect a curve.
Mcrae is easily the worst Biology professor I have come across so far! Her lectures are boring and useless. You basically have to teach yourself the material. She gives out quizzes every week and the questions are annoyingly specific so that it is very difficult to study for. Her review sessions for the quizzes have nothing to do with the quizzes!
A lot of people didn't like her, but I learned a lot from McRae's class. Take notes from lectures! A lot of the test content is specific about stuff learned in class, not just the powerpoints. I studied a lot during the week leading up to exams and always made an A or B. This class is manageable and not as difficult as people make it seem.
The lectures did not match the tests and the questions were wordy. There are only test and quiz grades. Even if the class clearly scored low it did not matter as curves were not offered. No extra credit. Often things would be described as fun facts that weren't going to be on the test and then ended up on the test. She is very informed though.
This is a hard class, ... seriously even if you thought Bio 1100 was a little tough. It is highly advisable to go to PASC at least twice a week and go to ALL REVIEW SESSIONS. I wish she would take attendance as a grade because the tests and quizzes really sneak up on you. Last don't skip she has important more insightful stuff for quizzes.
Dr. Mcrae does not know how to teach the Bio 1200 class, the class average on a test would be 60% and she wouldnt curve it at all bc she said she though it was fair and her class only requires a 50%! to pass it anyways. when explaining a problem she said it was a certain answer bc she interpreted that way so the way we interpreted it was wrong
This was the worst professor I have ever had. McRae is not a good professor, when I was struggling in her class I went to her because something just wasn't clicking for me, her response to me asking for help was "maybe college isn't for you" and she then proceeded to kick me out of her office saying she didn't have time for me. Would not recommend!
Dr. Mcrae is not the worse professor ever but she's also not the best. She lecutures heavy and her exams and quizzes are based more on what she says than the powerpoints/notes. Her quizzes and exams are very wordy and confusing and she just does too much.
Her test and quizzes are very hard & tricky. This class is solely based off of what she says in class & not the PowerPoints or the book. I would NOT take any of her classes but If you have to take her then I would recommend lots of tutoring.
I took this class hoping to learn a lot and didn't expect it to be easy. But this class honestly was horrible. Professor Mcrae spoke during lectures the way she saw biology and expected us to know it as well as her. The quizzes and tests were not related to lectures. I read the textbook and took notes/quizlets and never made above a C on exams.
She talks more in class about birds and other types of animals and species, then rather what we are tested and quizzed on. She will speak in terminology and as if we have a PhD in science. Shes very intelligent she just expects to much out of a freshman grade class. Test are super tricky and wordy. Would recommend tutoring and lots of studying.
She is awful and the way she grades papers has a lot of discrepancies. Her exams are ONLY open ended.
everything that you thought you needed to know from lectures, powerpoints, textbook, will not be on any of the quizzes and tests. the quizzes and tests are so hard, the whole class average for the final was a failing grade.
She's just bad. She's just here to ramble for an hour and go home. Mean to students who are just trying to ask questions. Her quizzes and exams are irrelevant questions, not related to the lectures, textbook, or PowerPoint. She tries to purposely trick us on the tests, like why?? Her ego gotta be brought down, she doing too much.
While Dr. McRae is unlike any professor I've ever had, she really isn't that bad. It is crucial to go through notes after lecture and give yourself plenty of time to study for quizzes/tests. These ratings don't do her class justice - if you actually put in the work, you will pass with a good grade. She truly cares about her students a lot.
genuinely one of the most disrespectful professors i've ever had, not fair with anything and so rude. doesn't try to help her students when they ask questions, and when they do, she gets extremely smart and acts like you are supposed to know everything. i would've gone my whole life without meeting this professor if i knew all this before.
I absolutely do NOT recommend very disrespectful. During a quiz I had anxiety and had to step out and asked if that's okay she said yes i'll take your paper and did not clarify I would not get to finish when I asked to finish the quiz she said Absolutely not. I then explained that I can show a doc note she said it would still not be acceptable.
Needs to learn how to use the internet
I took this class last semester and seriously cried over it every week. You are graded solely off of four exams; there are also 10 quizzes, but they are worth less than 5% of your grade. My whole class was collectively failing, and she didn't care. The only way I ended with a B was by going to tutoring twice a week.
Almost all of your grade comes from the exams. The exam questions are unreasonably difficult and confusing.
Evil incarnate
Just starting to take her class... so far she does not provide a slideshow for the class to follow. She is very monotone and is rude when you ask for clarification on basic questions. Her exams are written (Open-ended questions). She does not maintain eye contact lol. I thought this class would be interesting but she's moving too fast.
Dr. McRae has a very sarcastic response to simple questions or responses. She reads off of her slides and just talks a bunch and tends to go off subject. Her class is not hard. You will fall asleep. She hates when people web surf. Attendance isn't mandatory, but lab is. Do not miss too many days of lecture, or she will report you.
Animal Behavior.. I thought that this class would be interesting, but she makes it boring. Does not provide slides before class. Reads off of her slides and then chats about material that really is boring. Her voice is monotone, and it will put you to sleep. She only believes in taking notes using paper/pencil. Exams are all written.
Somehow manages to make an interesting topic so incredibly boring. Doesn't respond to emails. Only 2 exams, all short answer, no multiple choice. Grades lab reports excessively hard. Exams and lab reports are the only grades.
Super test and lecture heavy. Would not recommend. No extra credit, no homework grades, no attendance grades, no other assignments that could help your grade improve. Terrible!
