really clear, a little sarcastic, makes for an interesting morning.
dropped- very boring, randomly starts yelling. a little crazy.
it is a lull, sociology not good from her.
She is an amazing teacher with an excellent teaching style, there is never a dull moment and she makes the class worth attending. great!
Wonderful, fun lecturer. A class that I thought was going to be boring is now a joy to attend.
Very entertaining! She makes the morning class actually fun to attend. Her points are very interesting and often sarcastic. Great to talk to and very down to earth. Awesome prof!!!!!!!!
Amazing Professor, lot of fun! Demands the respect and attention from the class (and why not)!, shows movies that open ones eyes, dedicated to the profession of sociology and tells funny stories about her Dad (and others that drives her crazy), which makes for a great course! Definitely recommended!
Very good prof. Her class is always interesting. likes to tell stories about her old school in Alberta. She will tell you exactly what's on the exam throughout the year, she puts *** by the notes that are on the tests.
Great prof! She babies the class. It's like high school, lays everything out for you, writes it all on the board and gives huge hints for the tests and exams. Gives very high grades on the assignments. Keeps your interest in class with interesting stories. Do your work and receive an easy A. Likes opinionated people.
Aweosme, in depth, hilarious
awesome teacher! best teacher i've had so far, and the funniest. likes to tell stories and she tells you on what to study for on a test. we definitely need more teachers like her.
Great prof. She enjoys what she teaches and genuinely cares about her students. Her story telling adds much humor to the class. I highly recommend her if you like interactive, involving professors. Two thumbs up!
Susan is an awesome prof!
I love how she's really funny and enjoy all her jokes and sarcastic remarks. Her lectures are awesome becuase she's so funny. She doesn't tell you what's on the tests at all, or give you any hints, so that's a huge reason why i don't like her teaching style. Not very much clarity, and the tests are hard. She seems like a perfectionist.
Susan is an amazing prof! she tells you everything that will be on the exams while she is teaching it! She is very helpful and will go out of her way to help you if you ask. She also makes her classes very interesting by being brutally honest!
I loved this course, but the prof was very rude and unhelpful. The tests were easy if you knew the material. My advice is don't bother asking this prof any questions regarding the course or anything else unless you want her to snap at you to read the stuff yourself and find out the answers on your own.
Great prof. Very interactive. Tells lots of stories. Test are not challenging at all if you read the required readings.
across as very bitter and angry at the world. Get ready for all of the above and none of the above type questions. Make sure to only write what she wants to hear… apparently no one EVER for any reason chooses to be homeless and if you write that expect less then 50%!!!!
She's so funny, and down to earth. I was never bored in class, she has this charisma that makes you want to listen. I've learned a lot from her class even though academically I didn't do so hot (hard tests!), in real life I take a lot with me because of her.
Pretty good prof, lots of stories which are funny. Also you watch a ton of interesting movies. BUT get ready for the tests. 3@30%, 1@10%. About 90 multiple choice in 50 min. Bust your butt studying b/c the questions are confusing. Otherwise good prof
Her notes are well organized she stands at the front of the room and reads out what you should write. You gotta be a fast writer though. Her tests are confusing though. She has alot of questions that say "All the above" or "None of the above". And most people find that the tests were hard.
Very nice prof, funny, tries to keep the class interesting. Notes as failry straightforward and helpful. Test are long and fairly hard. VERY opinionated on essay responses, if you don't share her views expect a low mark.
Rude, self-centred, opinionated, and treats everyone else as if we are inferior to her. Of all my years in school, I have never had a problem with any of my teachers, but Susan Miller has completely ruined that for me.
has some interesting stories to tell, but overall, very opinionated. If you don't agree with her views and ideas, don't expect to do so well
great teacher - very intersting
Are you kidding, did you ever meet a sociology teacher that wasn't a left wing, socialist, know it all. Well if you haven't, go meet her. She's very opinionated. Her idea of social problems have nothing to do with a solution, just with how white males (and females) are the root to every problem faced by visible minorites.
Wow, I have never been so bored in a class, all you do is write, she trys to trick you on the tests - I don't 'pay' to be tricked - a very unfair teacher. And yes she is very oppinionated, just don't say anything, you'll be wrong anyways.
loooove this one!! shes funny, and interesting, and just a all around excellent prof!! Changed the way that I look at alot of things including university!!
Her lectures facillitate notes to the fullest, and she will open the class to discussion every once in a while too. Just an overall fun instructor to have.
Very opinionated and outspoken, very tough tests, KEEP UP WITH THE READINGS!!
Great prof - learned a lot - very clear.
make sure you're listening. She'll put you on the spot. And make sure you know what you're talking about.. she'll challenge every word you say!!!

I like Susan, she's funny and she knows exactly what to say. I'd like to take other courses with her in the future
Less of a class and more like a reeducation camp. "No war for oil, blah blah blah; selected not elected, blah blah blah; abortions and gay marriage and multiculturalism." Professor Miller would feel at home in San Francisco.
Very rude prof. not approachable. funny stories and interesting topics, but she just wasn't a very good teacher. Extremely hard marker when it comes to papers, and difficult tests! avoid this course, esp. if you have a full course load. I switched to psych...
Very interesting class, but tests are pretty tough, which can be discouraging. I like her as ateacher, but I don't see the need to make it impossible to get the mark you want.
Professor Miller is hilarious! Her exams are a bit tough, but she is extremely fair with the questions. Seriously, she does not trick because she tells you to pay attention to small details in the book and yes, they are relevent. Provides you with interesting stories related to the topics. You really do have to attend class and especially read!
"Authoritarian" comes to mind. She starts the class off by announcing that the students are clueless for not realizing that they should now be quiet. No disagreement or debate allowed, all questions are absurd questions! She will show this by rolling her eyes or making a "face" and changing the tone of her voice as if speaking to a small child.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER! TESTS ARE RIDICULOUSLY HARD! I wish I would have taken the course with someone else, I used to be interested in the subject.
Talked about Feminism the entire course. Marked very hard, impossible to do well in her course. AVOID!!
If you like being told what to think and feel by someone who wasn't even born in this country, take this course! At least it's easy.
Her class was interesting and it kept my interest in class. Her tests tested you on all the materials she gave you in class and everything that's in your notes. Reading the textbook should be priority as well. I thought it was a great class if you wanna learn something useful but if you're looking for an "easy" A+ look elsewhere. A good prof.
very cold hearted person. Doesn't care about her students. Tests are brutal. Doesn't like imput so don't bother, even in class discussions no matter what you'll be wrong and she'll laugh in your face and tell you off infront of the whole class. Doesn't mark fairly. Picks favourites, usually people at front of class.
She makes the class so much fun by using real life explanations and examples. Her tests are fair, but long and has a tendency to repeat questions but rewording them just to see if we're paying attention. Very personal and entertaining lectures.
she is a very interesting prof. i really enjoyed her lectures and the readings. if you aren't willing to work hard and read (and know) every bit of the text don't bother taking her class. but if you are willing it is toatlly possible to get an A or A+.
Susan is a very up front and honest professor. She makes no bones about it. I like the fact that she uses real life examples - some that people might not be comfortable with, but relevant none the less. Her tests are not easy, but if you put in the work, you will get the result you want. She runs a truly enjoyable class.
She gives lots of examples, so attendence is mandatory. SHE IS VERY BLUNT AND IS NOT AFRAID TO EMBARRASS YOU IN FRONT OF THE CLASS. tests are hard, but fair. She likes people who put up a debate and argument with her, so try to avoid that because she will make you look like a fool.
Good teacher, makes class somewhat fun. good stories and swears a lot haha. only problem is her tests are HARD!! you must attend class and take notes. she only teaches half the course in the lectures, the other half must be read in the text book, make sure you take notes of the readings and you should be ok.
Excellent professor--her explanations are very thorough, aided by her use of relevant, real-world examples. Her tests can be difficult, but if you spend time reading through (and memorizing) parts of the textbook, you will do well. Brilliant insights into pressing sociological issues. Susan is also extremely frank, but I value that in a professor.
I took the class to fill a blank stop and now Sociology is my major. Susan is incredibly funny and managed to make even the most mundane parts interesting. You will have to study but, after all, you are in University. You should be studying anyways :)
She's pretty interesting has lots of stories!
She's brilliant. I took the class to fill in a space, and now I'm thinking about making it my major! Her tests are hard, but they're fair. She gives fair warning about their content.
I totally loved her. Talking to her after class was always comfortable, and she was like an ocean of knowledge- not only for the class subjects, but for university issues in general. She helped me work out my major and minor, and figure out a focus in school. An amazing Prof, for sure! Sure her test are challenging, but you will know a lot after!
Very interesting prof. Expectations are unreasonable. You must know everything! Everything she says, movies, everything from the text, all notes, figures from the text, tables from the text and any extra side notes from the text. LOTS OF WORK
The hardest professor I have had yet. With that being said, also the most entertaining and exciting. I never laughed so hard at anything professors have said as I have at what Susan has to say. She's very good at getting her point across. Her tests totally destroy me though. You hav to know EVERYTHING.
She told us what we had to do from the beginning -- read text, read again and highlight, summarize in PEN, then study those notes. It works, I've gotten high A's on every one of her tests so far. She is an incredibly delightful prof, and you actually LEARN something in her class. I recommend to everybody without a second thought.
Susan is awesome; my absolute favorite prof of my first year, and for an 830 class, she really makes me want to go. So funny, would take another class from her in a second. However, the class isn't easy, an earned A so far. Read your textbook
I didn't like the class to begin with, however I couldn't stand this prof. She always thinks her opinion is right, so don't argue with her. If you say something stupid, she's gonna make you look like an idiot in front of the class. She is very entertaining, but that's pretty much it. Hard tests, annoying, etc.
Disappointing course, I hoped Social Problems would have been a better course.Tests(2) were hard, multiple choice--READ THE TEXT!lectures don't reflect what will be on the test.Assignments(3) and a presentation. Did well on those. She's okay, sometimes funny, but has to be right, classes were not that interesting, didn't feel I learned much.
Tough tests. She is hilarious in some of the stuff she talks about, but some of the other stuff you will shake your head. Please do not come to class with your own opinion it will not be welcomed!
She is SOOO funny. Really quick witted. Keeps the class interested, although doesn't exactly welcome people's opinions. She'll shut you down hardcore. Tests are really hard. You basically have to study the textbook, and attending her class is definitely worth it! And she always says "ya know what I'm sayin?" which is pretty funny.
She's funny and friendly! She even writes some of important stuffs on board. She gives many examples so students can actually understand the concepts more easily. I like this prof!!
Very funny professor! Keeps a usually boring class very light. Tells good stories and writes important stuff on the board. To pass a test, must memorize the entire textbook, and her opinion wins no matter what.
She's not as funny as she thinks she is, and talks about Alberta/Calgary every single class which is pretty annoying. She has said things that I find offensive and rude but there's no point in speaking up because opinions other than hers don't count for anything apparently, and she has made it quite clear that she doesn't care who she offends.
one of the best teachers I've had by far, she's very funny and very straight forward, her approach really motivated me to go to class and Ive learned a lot, people that complain about their opinions being shut down, well I've been in class and those opinions were extremely naive and biased with nothing to back it up.
Awesome Professor. She gets a lot of bad reviews on here because she actually makes students work. Welcome to university, you actually have to put in the work to get good grades. She tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests, so study and you will do great. I'm a finance/accounting major and hate sociology but she kept my interest.
Mixed reviews on this one. She's tough but interesting. Lectures are very colourful. Word of caution: just keep your mouth shut and accept her point of view. I am usually an A student; getting a B- in this class. Her exams are brutal!
I like sociology, how ever DO NOT choose this professor Susan.Trust me! The problem is even though this course is attractive to me, the professor make the test very hard(not reward your work)she is not gona teach you useful information, because I learned everything from the book not from her. I also question her teaching method.
This class could could have easily been boring, but she made it awesome. She was somewhat hardheaded at times, but it was what helped us to challenge our ways of thinking and go beyond what we believed was right. People complain that the exams were hard, but she DID warn us. READ YOUR TEXTBOOKS, PEOPLE. Susan was awesome!
One of the best profs I've had so far. Very clear about what she wants and very helpful. You must pay attention and she has high expectations but if you do the reading the class is not difficult.
really interesting prof. she tells you what she wants and you will have to work for your marks. use the textbook and you will be fine. done leave studying to the last minute
Fun prof, keeps classes entertaining. She tests thoroughly on both the text and her lectures. Her tests are heavy on names and theories while light on statistics and dates. If you disagree with her be prepared to defend your position - but if you can raise a solid point the discussions are very interesting.
Definitely my favourite professor! Her tests were not simple, but manageable if you read the textbook and go to class. Her lectures are always interesting.
I was terrified of taking sociology until I met Susan! I swear by this professor. She is very opinionated, but she makes sure her opinions relate well with what she's teaching. Hilarious person with a lot of funny stories! Her exams were fair - reflecting both her lectures and the textbook. You will not be disappointed with Susan as a prof. :)
Was very interested in this course prior to taking it. Susan is a great professor, lecutres are usally always super entertaing. Only downfall is that her midterms are haaaaaaard so beware of that! She made the course way more interesting and shows alot of movies
Susan's the best professor I've ever had. Those of you who whine about her difficult exams obviously didn't put in the time to study the textbooks and won't do well in university. She's interesting and engaging and well organized. Absolutely hilarious too! She expects hard work but attend lectures and read and you'll get a good mark.
Although attendance is not mandatory the only way you will do well is by going to her lectures. She adds humor to her class.
Does not use D2L so be sure to attend class regularly. SO FUNNY. I love "Susan's Stories" and lectures are never dull. Lots of discussions and you don't just feel like a number. She may not know your name but makes you feel part of the group. No midterm or final, term paper was really fun! My absolute favourite prof/teacher I've EVER had.
Attendance is not mandatory in this class but you do have to go if you want to do well. I actually enjoyed going to her class, Susan always kept my attention. She's very opinionated, so don't raise your hand to answer questions if you don't want to get into a heated debate .. she doesnt care if she embarasses you .. so keep quiet!
favourite prof. love her sense of humour but she will call people out for incorrect answers and make them feel stupid so its best to not talk during lectures or answer questions. keeps interest through media and keeps attention during class. she honestly made me love the sociology field and interest in future soc classes
Easily my favourite professor so far. She explains things in such a way that it is easy to learn. Classes are fun and interactive. Tests are somewhat challenging, but not unreasonable. TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER!!!
She may be crazy but in a good way. Go to her class, make notes in the textbook(very important) and study more than the day of the exam and you'll be fine
she is a really interesting prof, very funny, shows lots of videos and keeps class entertaining. But her exams are VERY HARD and she is not very clear on what is expected. important to attend class, lots of stuff on exams are from class notes.
I took this class in Spring session which I believe helped a lot. Tests are not easy, but if you have attended class and took good notes and read the textbook you will be fine. Absolutely must read the textbook, she will ask a few questions on material that she did not cover in class on each test. No surprise material and tells you what's on tests.
(1) student register in this class: 51 (she mentioned), student attended class: 28 (after christmas), max student of this class: 60 (2) student didn't attend class usually get higher grade in her class, statistically (3) test really hard, attend class is helpfulness as much as study by your own (4) students easy to get pass, but not a higher grade
Probably my favourite class to date! Susan is entertaining, hilarious, and straight to the point. Don't listen to the people that say not to speak during class, yeah you may encounter a mini back and forth, but it's well worth it; she won't put you down. Definitely read the text prior to class, and attend class and you will achieve a great grade.
she is the best prof to take sociology with. she is every clear and make sure you don't text in class cuz they will point you out and be on time. Read the whole text book especially the examples in the boxes. Her question could be confusing sometimes but if you read the text book and attended class you will get a good mark.
You need to read the textbook. The course content was interesting
extremely tough tests. stay away.
I absolutely LOVED taking this intro class with Susan Miller. Honestly, she's a bit intense when you first get to know her but she definitely grows on you. I found her to be hilarious! Attendance is mandatory as she does NOT post slides/grades online. Read to textbook in order to do well on the tests, but is an easy marker on papers. Great prof!
Susan is not a great prof. Intimidating at first, but overall funny and explains things well. High emphasis on participation, but beware; any comment you make could be met with intense criticism and mockery, all because she has a PH.D. and you don't. Tests a lot from the textbook, all multiple choice. Attend lectures and study and you'll be fine.
I must say for my first time attening UOM I wish I would have known about her. After getting into her class, people kept telling me shes awful. That your not lucky to walk out with a B or higher. The first day I could see she was a mean lady. I just wanted this course to end. Through out the course she has made me look stupid among my classmates.
Susan is my favourite prof. She tells great stories and is really engaging and funny. It's easy to pay attention and learn from her lectures! She encourages class discussion and is not afraid to challenge your input in front of your classmates, although participation is not for marks. She doesn't post slides online so make sure you take good notes.
Very nice prof but her tests are very hard not a easy A at all. Have to study hard from notes and textbook as she doesn't post her lecture slides and will test you on topic that's not covered in class but her lectures are very interesting and humorous.
Susan's lectyres are very straight forward and funny. She makes sure you understand all of the terms through hilarious personal anecdotes, class or small group discussions, and examples. Her instructions are clear and fair. The only issue I found with her was how occasionally her personal life interferes with her professionalism. Great prof overall
First the good. An easy A. Simply regurgitate, without thought, the class material. Don't think, it will just lower your grade. Now the bad. Very biased and bigoted. Numerous topics in class where easy to debunk by simple google search's. Don't ever question her or you will be ridiculed. Worse prof to date.
Tests were extremely specific and hard. Participation matters so make sure you speak up. However, 100% recommend the course. Thought-provoking.
Susan is a great prof, one of the best I've had so far. At first she will come off mean but she's just setting some ground rules for the term. She grades very fairly and reasonably, gives a clear understanding of assignment criteria. Test heavy, based on the textbook and stuff she says in class. Lectures are very fun! She is hilarious !
Susan is an excellent prof. SOC 2010 is such a great class... she sets it up so youre bound to meet a few friends :) Read the textbook or you will NOT pass the exam. I loved her courses.
Susan was a wonderful professor. She inspired me to pursue sociology after the introductory class. She was a genuine instructor and had very entertaining lectures that pulled on her personal experiences of life. I frequently think of her lectures and recall the one of a kind individual she was.
