She's one of the worst/meanest professors in the business school!
Hard class and strict! but very very good and thorough teaching
No Comments
She is mean, DOESNT LIKE ATHLETES! Aren't office hours for help?? NO!!!
Hard material, but she makes it easier than most of the other professors
Hard class, goes over things real fast, do the homework or else....
Class is hard, she doesn't really teach or clarify the material well
No Comments
Good prof, bad class
pretty good teacher, HARD CLASS but explains well, do homework and excel stuff
If your an athlete or of another culture consider someone else.
this class was the devil.
Very hard class.Mean professor.Tried to get me to drop b/c I had two F's on first tests but I managed to get a C so don't let her get you down! Do all the hw and Excel stuff!
extremely serious, don't plan on getting any extra credit or extra help...may be able to do alright if you had Markham for 191. you MUST know how to use excel!!! tests are not too bad (relatively speaking
Yes, this class is one of the worst in COB and yes this prof. has got to be one of the worst professors to walk this campus if not state. Get away from her while you can.
Sooo hard, and sooo much work. Don't even bother buying the text. She doesn't use it. Tests are tough. If you love homework, take her class.
Definitely a hard class, but not because of her. She's just as tough as the rest of the professors...prolly easier. Lots of work, but I never did any of the hw. I just did the modeling exercises and tests and got B. Don't be afraid to go to her office
Very hard class, but definately manageable. The subject is tough, but she tries her hardest to make it clear. She takes great lenghts to make herself available for office hours and outside help. Modeling exercises are difficult, but can be accomplished
The class is hard, but she is a great teacher. Really knows her stuff, and makes the class easier.

Tough class - She's like a tough drill instructor. Tells you exactly what to do, and expects you to do it. If you work hard, it will show, and you will see the results! So far, the best teacher I've had at JMU. Hardest yes. Best absolutely.
Hardest teacher I had so far. her projects take longer than senior thesis did. Tests reflect nothing in class. The worst part is she has no sense of humor. She should sit in a cubicle all day and do everyone a favor.
Its true she has no sense of humor but is that in her job description?? The class is tough and the book is useless but if you pay attention in class and do the modeling exercise you should end up with a B.
Best advice....don't go near her with a ten foot pole, unless you wanna be up all night studying material that is not on tests and doin LP problems that take all night
This lady is the devil herself. You get graded on assignments that aren't explained to you and she is a total drill sargent with grading. She goes at lighting speed, is soo boring, and not personable at all. My advice: GET OUT ASAP!
Not helpful at all - would get annoyed with you if you asked a question. Really hard and very paranoid about the honor code!
Please do not pay attention to the comments of the pathetic underachievers. This is a hard class all around, but she is the best! She is very clear and explains things well. Willing to help students in office, you're at a loss if you don't take Palocsay!
An extremely difficult course! Granted, the material is difficult, but her tests, quizzes, and modeling exercises are all way too hard, and she goes way too fast. Not to mention, she def. has a Type A Personality.
She is the DEVIL. she has a miserable personality and a horrible teaching style. Many will drop and many will fail. GET out now. I have never had a worse teacher in my life.
291 is a hard class, but she is by far the best teacher to have for it. you cannot skip ANY classes though! go to her for the m.e.'s and shell pretty much give you the answers. if u do the practice tests, ull be fine. dont bother buying the book!
I failed the class the first time. This is my second time now, and I have everything done except to take the cumulative final. I have a 70%. The best thing about her is she gives TONS of partial credit. Take her, and DO THE HOMEWORK. HARD CLASS! NO SKI
Hard class, but she knows what she's talking about and explains it was well as she can.
Hard class. Goes a bit fast. Explains ok in class, but when you go to her office hours to ask questions, many of her answers were "look in the book" or "look in your class notes" or "this is 191 review". Takes attendence. Pra
It's definitely not an easy class, but I think she is probably one of the best teachers to have for it. She tries very hard to make the material undersandable, her coursepack was very helpful and she always tries to fully answer questions.
Psychopath - don't bother going to her office for help -- she doesn't want you to go there. If you go, be prepared for a nasty disposition -- especially if it's before she's consumed her yogurt cup lunch. Hungry teachers = NASTY teachers.
Doesn't stop to check if everyone understands the material,it is true that when you go office hours she will say"look in the book."yes you are basically teaching yourself how to do the material,I strongly suggest that you avoid taking her!! AT A
Not an easy class. Tough to get an A or B, but most people can pull of a C. Pretty helpful outside of class. Does not prepare you well for her tests, final exam was killer.
She isn't half as bad as everyone says. She's one of the most well prepared teachers I've ever seen and she IS helpful if she sees that you are putting in effort. Nice lady, good class and NOT that hard to get a A/B. Take her!
Everyone drops her class.Started with 30, after the first test the students were dropping like flies. Her tests do not reflect what she teaches, she has no sense of humor and is scary to look at. I have nighmares about her.
I admit it, I wasn't in love w/ her at first, but she really does know what she's talking about. As much as I wanted to drop originally, I'm thinking of taking 291 with her. She's completely organized and extremely helpful if you actually talk to her. I think she's just a math nerd who loves stats
Fair, but a total jerk. She will count you absent if you are 30 seconds late for the class. Lacks common decency that most professors at this school have. Knows her stuff though.
Man, what a bad teacher. Do not take this lady. Worst teacher I had at JMU not because she is hard, but because she does NOT teach!!!
I took this class for the second time and had to drop it again. Could not understand her as a teacher. Don't recommend her for this class. If at all possible take a different teacher.
291 is going to be HARD no matter who you take it from - if you want to actually be able to understand the material & have a professor that will really go out of her way to help you then take her. She is honestly not as bad as everyone says and is def a good prof
She's actually really good. I don't get these ratings. I think 291 is just a hard class for some people--a lot of math/excel/problem solving. She is clear, fair with grading, and doesn't work you to death. Projects take like 2-3 hours, but you don't have to do practice problems. Tests aren't bad.
Her class is very hard, but 291 is just a hard class in general. She is a great teacher, very willing to work with you in her office hours. I feel like I've learned more in her class than I have learned in any class I've taken so far in college.
Her teaching method is excellent - does a great job of explaining things and what you need to do. The problems that show up on problem sets and tests are often times different than ones worked in class. Lacks all personality.
A good teacher overall. The workload for this class was tremendous but it was a 400 level class. Tests were very difficult but she allowed us to make little "cheat sheets", though the way the tests are structured these are not usually very helpful. You'll learn a lot, but it might hurt your GPA. Do not take THIS class if you are busy already.
Professor is knowledgeable about the material, but does a very poor job conveying the material to students. No personally whatsoever. Students feel intimidation to ask questions because of her projected negative attitude. Exams and quizzes are extremely hard. If you enjoy a challenge and/or the possibility of graduating a semester late and a likely
Professor knows what she is teaching, and teaches effectively. Must have a slight amount of common sense and you will do great in this class. Might come off as a little rude at first, but warms up to class. Curves and is willing to help if you see her in office hours.
JMU is a wonderful place, where people are polite towards one another. A place, where the atmosphere is calm and relaxing and a simple hello and good morning can make a whole difference in a persons’ day. This teacher reflects the total opposite of what I have experienced. She is highly rude, unapproachable, and insensitive towards students.
This class is hard, period. It takes time commitment and actually attending class, but Palocsay is a great teacher and shes very helpful in office hours if you go to them. She understands where the student is coming from and tries her best to make the material as relative to the class and clear as possible. Im taking her 291 class next semester.
She is a very effective teacher. She has a personality and is kind to you if you show her that you are interested getting the most out of the class. It is obvious she has the intelligence and skills to work elsewhere but seems to really enjoy working with students. YOU have to put the EFFORT into this class to get what you want out of it. Good Prof
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! granted she knows her stuff, but is terrible at teaching it. She makes the class 100 times harder than it should be. worst experience ever. She gave me nightmares! (take ratcliffe, ive heard he is the best prof for 291)
If you can take anyone else, do it! It's not impossible to pass her class, but not having to live through hell for a semester would probably be your better option. In office hours, she's really nice and shows you she actually has a personality. Modeling exercises, quizzes, and tests are all ridiculous. If you take her, be prepared to work harddd.
DO NOT TAKE AT ANY COSTS. DROP AND GET AN OVERRIDE ELSEWHERE IF YOU HAVE TO. Rily Murray is not well known but TAKE HIM. 291 is a difficult class no matter what but I have heard he is the nicest and easiest 291 teacher at JMU. DO NOT TAKE HER TRUST ME
DO NOT TAKE. this is the type of class you will work the HARDEST in and still BARELY get a C. VERY HARD problem tests no m.c, 3 quizzes, and excel assignt. that will take you hours in her office to complete. RARELY EXTRA CREDIT AND RARELY CURVES. this class will consume your time and force you to fall back in other classes. DO NOT TAKE HER
I think this subject would be hard no matter what prof. you take it with. This is not an easy class and you have to really work to maintain at least a C. At first she comes off as a little harsh, but she eventually warms up to the class like another reviewer said. Most of the time, she is willing to help with assignments.
This course is hard no matter who you take. She explains it in class, the examples are in the handout book (which she authored personally), and she is welcome during office hours. What more can you ask for?
Worst class ever taken. She expects you to know everything and makes the problems as complicated as possible. Test are hard too. Excel projects can take all night to do. If there were 8 days in a week, you might pass, but there's not. good luck. Don't take.
I was scared to take her class after reading all of the comments on here, but as long as you're willing to study she's a great teacher! She's really understanding and helps you a lot. She's pretty much available 24/7. This is a hard class in general, but I think Palocsay is a good teacher to take it with.
People think she is mean...but she was helpful when I had questions. She won't give you the time of day if you don't try! So, make sure you do your homework, eventhough she doesn't collect it, and read. She gives some extra credit! Her own textbook is easier to understand then the other book. The practice tests in the back of hers help!
Do not take this professor!! She expects everyone to automatically understand the material and if you don't she just tells you to do the problems in the book. She is not very approachable or nice either and is a hard grader.
I would 100% recommend taking her for 291. This is a hard class no matter who you have, but she is VERY good teacher. She wants her students to learn, so she is very clear when teaching, and tries to make sure everyone understands. She is also willing to help if you go to her office hours.
I love this lady. 291 is just plain hard, but she knows her stuff and is very thorough. Heavy excel reliance. If I had to take 291 again with another professor,I wouldnt because she does a great job. Her tests are HARD, but they are curved to the highest grade in the class. The assignments are lengthy, but the lowest quiz OR assignment is dropped.
Dr P is a very nice lady and she knows her stuff. Out of all my professors, she knows the most in her field. 291 is hard no matter who you take but she is very helpful and wants to to learn the material. Excel projects help your grade. Tests are difficult but again its 291. I would recommend her.
WOW, everyone knows that cob 291 is a hard class, but this lady goes above and beyond to make it harder. Her tests are rediculous and you wont have time to finish. Why make the hardest class at jmu even harder, it just doesnt make any sense at all!!!!!!!!
Terrible & difficult class and she makes it way more difficult. She has no visible personality, very rude and looks angry about 100% of the time. Not helpful during office hours. Overall, terrible teacher. Do NOT take her!
291 is hard but Palocsay makes it impossible. The tests are way to long for the amount of time, and the exercises take hours. Dont bother going to her office hours she never helps you. If you are confused she makes you feel dumb.... dont take her. If she's your only option wait a semester. Otherwise you will end up repeating it then anyways.
I honestly can say that she was a great professor. She really helped out in office hours. Her excel assignments took forever, but they really helped out your grade. I studied for the tests for a long time and didn't do well on them at all, and still ended up with a B in the class. Take her if you can!
She's what a professor should be. She has a wealth of knowledge, tried and true examples, and a difficult workload. The excel exercises were difficult, but let me tell you this: After I got out of college, my workload at work seems like a breeze compared to her class, and THANK YOU DR. P for this!
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!
You gotta understand that the class itself is not easy. it requires a lot of effort form a student. if you really try to understand the material and do all the works on time, do what she advises you to to, this class is actually not that hard. If you go to her office hours, Dr.Palocsay is very helpful and super nice. After all, I enjoyed this class
Professor Palocsay is pretty nice and is willing to help you, but does not understand that people might not always understand and need more help. Her tests are extremely hard and more than half of every class drops out the first few weeks. Sign? Make sure to start your projects really early. It is important to have a good grade on them.
If you want an F take this class. Seriously, I am not kidding. She does not teach. She will show examples but explain nothing. When you ask a question you can tell that she is frustrated at you for not understanding and will most likely yell an answer at you. I came into this class with 30 ppl at the end there were only 11 left and I know 2 failed.
She is a good professor! She gets a bad rap because the class is so hard. However she is a good teacher, you can tell she really knows her stuff, and she is very helpful, especially in office hours... I went to every class, did the HW questions to study for quiz's and tests and got a B+ in the class. If you put in the effort you can get a good grad
scary looking woman. but good teacher. DO THE HOMEWORK. if you skip more than 2 days in a row, you're literally at the point where it's impossible to catch up. if you actually do the homework and reading after every class, its not that hard. if you don't, it'll be the hardest class you ever take. she's been teaching 20 years. take her.
I would recommend her for 291. This class is not easy, but she makes it somewhat manageable. 4 HW assignments for a total of 80/560 pts and 5 quizzes (lowest dropped) for 100/560 pts. Since this is a pre-req for COB, I would recommend Palocsay, otherwise, why are you taking this class? For misery?
Take her! She makes the material pretty interesting by always using newspaper articles and real world examples. Gives practice tests in the course packet which are EXTREMELY HELPFUL! She knows what she's talking about and is good at explaining. I'm not that smart, but didn't mind this class at all.
Whoever below says to take her for 291 is crazy! She is mean, terribly mean. Her class is boring but being in class is beyond helpful. The book is useless so don't buy it.She has exercises that add up to a lot of points so do those to perfection for a semi-easy grade. Her tests are outrageously difficult and studying is useless. You get 291or ya dont
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! worst professor i have ever had. the class is hard and she makes it even worst by only telling what to do not explaining the reasoning behind it, making it difficult to do examples on your own. her office hours are not help, she will make you feel worthless!!!the class started with about 30 students and ended with 9 students
She really isn't that bad. All the work you do is in one workbook that's all you need to study for quizzes and tests. She gives you her old exams that are just like the tests. Do the practice problems they're extra practice that help out a lot.
Tests are somewhat difficult and the assignments are easy. She gives a lot of partial credit and I think she does a good job teaching. Most of these previous comments are bias and simply taking it out on her rather than realizing they simply suck at math.
The class material is really hard. Dr. Palocsay is very boring and it's hard not to fall asleep most days. Plus she normally kept our class for 5 extra minutes every class. The tests are hard, but the homework she gives is not collected or graded. I would recommend finding another professor for this class.
Hard class! she is very dull and boring which makes it worst. she does give practice test from previous semesters, do them they help. doesn't explain material all that great. if you can take with another professor, you will be better off.
The class itself is difficult so, to be fair it isn't her fault. However if you are engaged in class and don't act up she is very easy to get along with. She can be a bit dull in the beginning but as the year spans she becomes more entertaining. If you are engaged in the class and put in effort she makes the class very enjoyable.
Not very helpful. Tests are hard. Good luck.
very lenient on attending 8ams, as long as you do the assigned homework and study you'll do fine. awesome professor!
I personally really liked her. She's good at explaining the material, and gives us lots of problems to practice. The tests aren't easy, but she lets us use a full sheet of paper for notes. Only 3 excel projects, unlike the 12 in Ratcliffe's class. 291 is a hard class in general, but i think Palocsay is one of the better professors for it.
Professor Palocsay is a tough, but helpful teacher. 3 quizzes, 3 tests, and 3 mostly simple Excel Projects. She gives useful practice tests in the course packet. If you go to her office hours, and do the homework a B is manageable. Always ask for help. She seems intimidating but is so helpful.
This class is really hard as it is and Palocsay is incredibly critical, unhelpful and not clear at all when you ask for help, don't take her
Worst teacher. Stay away from taking her. Does not really teach and expects you to be a wizard at the material.
Palocsay has a very clear and uniform teaching style which can at times seem dry, but if you write down details from her examples it is easy to follow. The tests are pretty hard, but if you study a lot the quizzes and projects are easy. Come into this course expecting it to be a challenge and willing to do the work, and you will be fine.
AVOID!!! Worst and most stressful class I have ever taken. She expects you to be a genius when it comes to Excel and is so monotone that often I didn't know if she was teaching or just talking. Her tests are WAY harder than any of the practice problems that are assigned. Incredibly rude - don't get up in class unless you want to be called out.
I'll be honest, when reading the reviews for Prof. Palocsay I was nervous for this class. Yes she is a bit dry and the subject material is hard, but she is a good professor. Go to her during office hours or after class and she is very helpful. She curves the tests which helps your grade. Do the optional HW and go to class and youll be fine.
This class is tough for everyone. Palocasy at least is really fair in her tests. Study and do the homework and you should be fine on the tests. She has tough tests, but so does every other professor so definitely expect to keep up with the reading material and pay attention to the excel lectures so that you can do the excel projects she gives out.
291 is a hard class in general, but palocsay is really helpful. If you study and practice you'll do fine on tests. She seems really intimidating butt if you go to her office hours she is so sweet and funny and loves to help. I had to work hard for me grade but it was worth. She also assigns 3 excel projects that arent too difficult
Your not going to get a teacher that gives you a test with a modified book problem you recognize with a couple of numbers changed the tests are harder than anything in the book. However she is the nicest lady in office hours she genuinely want's you to do well. She gives amazing advice about careers to learned more from her than my own adviser.
The worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life! Going into 291 I knew it was going to be a hard class but Palocsay goes out of her way to make sure that you fail the class. She even bragged to my advisor that she just gave back her second test and to be ready for a lot of kids to drop the class. Hardest 291 teacher. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!
TAKE HER SHES AWESOME
Professor Paloscay is ultimately a good professor. She is very dry and grades really hard, but she definitely knows her stuff. She is willing to work with you and wants the best for you. Don't leave the class to get a snack or go to the bathroom or you will get called out!
Palocsay is great, you're going to need to do problems out of the book and not just review the course pack because she always makes the test harder than the course pack and it's similar to the book. Take her because clear and give good examples, but don't expect an easy A. If you do take her don't take the first test for granted, it only get harder
Some people find her intimidating but she's very nice. If she knows you care and give effort, she will be very willing to help you and I've seen her be very accommodating on multiple occasions. On the tests, partial credit is very available so you can make errors and ultimately get a question wrong but anything you did right will save you points.
Shes nice and definitely knows her stuff but test were very challenging. PASS sessions did help a lot though.
Dr. Palocsay is one of the best professors I've had at JMU. COB 291 is a tough class to begin with but Dr. Palocsay has been teaching for 30 years and knows how to teach. I had my doubts about her at first but she teaches very well and has an ample amount of examples to help you. Don't be late to class and don't get up during class. Overall 10/10
One of the hardest classes I've taken so far but PASS sessions help a ton. Goes over problems very quickly and hard to follow along in class. Homework problems aren't mandatory but you should definitely do them to pass the class. She WILL bump up your grade tremendously if you are hardworking and willing to put in effort.
Dr. Palocsay knows her stuff, however I had a hard time learning from her. Her tests were pretty hard, which was expected, but they are not like the practice problems so I always had trouble preparing for what the test would actually be like. I had Scott stevens for 191 and would recommend taking him over her for 291.
This was one of the most challenging classes I have ever taken at JMU. The only reason I did okay in 291 was because of PASS, trust me go to EVERY single one. Susan was an okay teacher, although she is very unapproachable outside of the classroom which is what I disliked most about her. Overall, not the best teacher for 291 but not the worst.
Palocsay did not care one bit for student connection. She was stern and very hard to reach outside of class. Graded only on tests and the final, the projects we did which took forever barely touched the final grade. Tests were extremely difficult and no curve or extra credit. If you want to pass this class, DO NOT TAKE HER
Grade consists of 3 tests, the final, and 3 excel assignments. Tests are tough, however she does give partial credit if you show your work. Excel assignments are also tough at times. Palocsay knows what shes talking about, but her lectures are you watching her do practice problems. Find a study group because youll have to teach yourselves.
Not the nicest professor; very intimidating, but she knows her stuff and is mostly willing to help if you go see her during office hours. 291 is already very difficult, but if you follow her lectures, take notes, study, and go to PASS sessions, you will probably do well. Just don't get up during class, she will call you out for it
Palocsay is cold and unapproachable. She makes you feel dumb for asking questions. The material is tough and she "teaches" by doing practice problems and having you copy it down. There are 3 exams, 3 projects and a final. The exams are HARD with no curve! The projects are challenging but help save your grade. Overall, avoid her class at all costs.
She was so rude and not understanding at all. Her lectures were boring and the test were extremely hard. You must go to class to pass and go to her office hours. She definitely knows what hse is talking about but she is unapprochable and cold.
291 is a hard class on its own and Dr. Palocsay did not make it any easier. Tests/projects were way harder than in-class problems. Test heavy with a few exercises and quizzes that are basically worth nothing. Would recommend taking someone else
This class was incredibly hard. I was in a group chat with ten other students and all except one dropped the class. Everyone I knew failed. It was awful and I would never recommend this professor to anybody.
Do not take her whatever you do. I've never felt like a lost puppy more in my life, and I had perfect attendance in her class. All she does is do problems in the course packet every class through the projector and doesn't explain as she's going. She never really seemed concerned about the well-being of her students.
Lectures consist of her doing problems in the workbook super fast so you're just copying things down and not actually retaining information. Test questions are way harder than any practice problem. Very fast paced class but if you read the textbook every day before class you have a chance.
