Worse professor ever in the history of professors. Very unfair and unhelpful no matter how many times you go to her office hours. Don't waste your time taking her class. GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT AND RUN FOR UR LIFE!!
DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO GAVE HER GOOD RATINGS.she is by far the WORST teacher EVER. CLASS IS SOOOOOOO HARD. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSSS!!!!!
She scared me...SO MUCH. Just don't take her is all I'm going to say......
I didn't do most of the reading an I got an A. I like her a lot... She's funny and regardless of your grade you'll learn a lot.
Extremely tough teacher, and the course is a ton of work.
Way too hard for intro, boring, I was scared of her. On a positive note, I did meet a very hot guy in this class who became my husband! Whee!

in the name of all things sacred, do not take her class!
Hey, I liked her! Then again, I also liked psyche. Only take her if you're interested in the subject matter, because I found it to be a very rewarding class. The workload is beyond intense. She's an amusing person and made class interesting.
awful...get out and spare your GPA...if you must have her (as most psych majors do) prepare to concentrate solely on this class
Worst teacher ever..she makes too many sexual jokes and hates guys..trust me...she is aweful...stay away...i changed majors b/c of her.
Believe me, get out now...if you want a good gpa...shes not the professor for you. Even during her office hours, her advice, "study more"...she's realy helpful. Get OUT! She needs to get a life. Psych isn't everything

not that bad, be able to not just reiterate terms but be able to apply them, it's easy an easy easy A or an F--just depends on how you think
its a lot of work, but she does a good job expaling things and it's not a lot of busy work, all the work she makes you do is necessary, you'll spend a lot of time in the library though
I couldn't stand to listen to her whiny voice, she was too demanding when it wasn't necessary, she is too annoying and a really hard grader.
When the class avergage on an exam is a 52 that should tell you something right there. Seriously, I dedicated the majority of my semester to her and ended up with a C. Dont take her if you dont have to.

this woman is a psychotic grader - for your own good avoid if possible, even if you understand the subject matter you may still end up with a c on a test because of her meticulous grading - and her comments on essays are mean and sarcastic
BY FAR the worst class I have EVER taken at this university. Grading seems to be arbitrary and not follow any particular method. Don't even THINK about enrolling in her class if you don't want to get headaches all the time.
this woman is the devil...seriously...dont take anything of hers...im not joking
WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. FEELS TEACHER IS ALWAYS RIGHT AND STUDENT IS ALWAYS WRONG. changing my major because of her. If you go to her for a meeting she makes you feel even worse about yourself. Please stay away from this lady!!!
Remember "It's Pat" on Saturday Night Live? Imagine that voice and character with a doctorate in psychology. Very anoying. Very unfair.
I had a stomachache all semester because of this class...
Good at explaining. Hard tests, you need to really, really understand the material. if you're not a major, I'd take someone else, she's hard.
extremely hard class but if you ask for help shes there to give it to you. as long as you pay attention and know what she is asking for you will do alright. be prepared to work hard yet learn a lot. she is very intelligent.
it's true she's tough, but she's extremely nice and very good at helping you out if you need help. good advisor too.
Horrific. Clearly a proponet of regurgitating fact without any substance or discussion. Yet another reason of why professors at fairfield are so laise faire. You definitley get teh impression that she is not there to teach but affirm her tenure.
I took her class my freshman year and hated psychology afterwards...luckily I took more psych classes my senior year with better professors.
I took her last semester, and after this semester's classes I realized just how much I learned from her. She could be a little (ok, a lot!) intimidating at times, but was a decent professor overall. Grading seems unfair during the semester, but there's always a curve at the end.

Was going to be a psych major and then i took her class... well, needless to say I was not a psych major thanks to her. VERY HARD
Very intelligent woman, pretty fair grader...is willing to teach, but not to discuss, if that makes sense. can be very intimidating when she wants to be. Bottom line - psych major? take her. non-psych? RUN.
Dr. Rakowitz is an amazing teacher, an amazing advisor, and a wonderful person. Get to know her on a one-to-one basis...she's a good connection to have once you're an alumn. She's very thorough and challenges college students as they should be challenged. She's incredibly intelligent and has students' best interests in mind.
best professor! she really cares and wants you to learn. If you put the effort in you will get so much out of her classes! You learn so much
Dr. Rakowitz is an incredible professor and, more importantly, a great person. She is incredibly intelligent, yet not intimidating in the least bit. Though the class is undisputably a lot of work, she is really wants to see her students succeed and her feedback could not be any more helpful. I cannot believe some people have actually bashed her.
Amazing teacher, teaches with fantastic clarity and is always willing to go that extra step to make your learning experience valuable. Loved the class, despite the crazy loads of work.
Worst teacher at fairfield. Avoid at all costs!
The worst professor ever, class is a waste takes everything straight from the textbook, annoying voice, disgusting overall, makes rude and sarcastic comments on essays, tests are impossible. acts like all students are lazy, if u don't end up hating her something is seriouly wrong with you.
wost teacher that i have ever had. she wont even teach the whole chapter, she will only talk about like 1 section of the chapter and yet she will test u on everything!...shes rude and inconsiderate and doesnt care what other people have to say...i cant even answer questions in class without her looking at me weird!....
Rakowitz is an awful teacher. I can't say that I've learned anything since I've been in the class. She makes the students feel like they are stupid when they ask questions or give an answer to hers. She is not approachable at all and only teaches a tiny bit of the chapter and tests you on everything except what she taught.
I don't know what everyone's issue is...she's a great teacher. The class is really interesting. She's very straightforward and a little intimidating, but I think she has a great personality. It's definitely one of my favorite classes. I guess you either love her or hate her?
Unpleasant androgyne with baffling grading standards. She is one of those teachers who would rather see the full bell curve of her grading, with the median apex right around 70. If you like reading a lot, and do not care much for a decent GPA, then take this class and learn very little anyway.
Worst teacher. Developmental Psych was supposed to be taught by Dr. Primavera, but was switched. Rakowitz is mean, condescending, & taught as though we'd all taken Research Meths. Even with every test curved the class avg. was about 60%. 3 people came to the final breathing into paper bags & it took about everyone a 1/2 hr to write her evaluation.
She was terrible in every way possible. DO NOT TAKE unless you like to read the most boring useless crap and have it repeated in class. The tests are even worse 7 chapters. stay away I would rather swallow nails than go back to that class
AVOID LIKE THE BLACK PLAGUE!!!
RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!!
she is horrible. she is my advisor and every time I walk into her office she has not idea who I am and tells me that I am not going in the right direction. thats bull i have a 3.5 and am taking 6 classes a semester she just likes to make people feel stupid
If you are not a psych major and are taking this class to fulfill your core requirement DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Do not take especially if you are a freshman and want to get a decent GPA. Tests are incredibly hard. Class averages in quizzes and tests have not reached 70%. Way too much reading for an Into class. Run away now.
if you are interested in psych, she def has a lot of useful knowledge. read the book, come to class, & youll do well. im guessing people dont like her bc she actually requires u to work; i like her, & find her humorous & knowledgeable. posts grades online, & she's always available to help; dont be put off by what youve heard. make ur own judgements
If you are good at mulitple choice tests and quizzes, you MIGHT be alright. She is very avaliable for office hours, but when I met with her she would be checking her email and was hardly any help.**** ton of textbook usage. She should only tech into psych to students who want to major in the subject. Do not take to satisfy a core required course.
RESEARCH METHODS. ok, she is really hard and sometimes talks down to the students. however, once you get past her intimidating persona, she is actually kind of a cool person. you learn a lot in this class. if you are a psych major and possibly want to publish research in the future, take it.
Honestly the rudest professor I have faced thus far, and I am a senior at Fairfield. Avoid at all costs, and Honors students BEWARE!
one of the worst professors I've really ever had. Her quizzes and tests are so unclear, she makes you feel completely dumb when you get the wrong answer. She basically tells you indirectly that you'll fail the class when you go to her for help. Really don't take her at all if you want a good GPA.. she's all over the place
I entered this class with a pit feeling in my stomach after reading the reviews on this website that only grew heavier as the semester progressed. This "woman" is rude, viciously sarcastic, arrogant, and shows no interest whatsoever in helping students. I'm shocked that Fairfield has not done anything to alert this witch of her despicable conduct.
This woman really needs to re-evaluate herself. If you don't want to teach, then don't. She treats her students like they are idiots. We are obviously all smart if we made it into Fairfield. What did I learn from this class? I learned that there are some really arrogant people in the world. DO NOT take this class. Avoid at ALL COSTS
I am a freshman in a freshman based class, and seriously, she treats the course like we're all psych majors. her assignments and grading styles are so overly complexed. She gives out tests on 6 chapters, without clarification of what you need to learn. She ruined my freshman year schedule. DONT TAKE HER EVER.
To all who are worried about Rakowitz, the negative reviews come from dullard nest-egg babies with zero metacognitive ability whatsoever. Surprise - college is challenging. Go whine about it elsewhere. Rakowitz does a fine job.
Honestly, she is not AT ALL as bad as everyone makes her out to be. She is runs a lecture based class with a sarcastic twist. If you can't handle sarcasm, then don't take her. If you act like an adult and take responsibility for yourself/your education than she will respect you and an A will be easily attainable. You get what you earn in her class
ok teacher but just kind of mean
Title of PY163 is for Developmental Pysch for NON-MAJORS. Rakowitz acts as if everyone is a psychology and she is just reviewing knowledge that everyone should know. She is a very tough grader and has 3 exams with 7 chapters full of info. STAY FAR AWAY FROM RAKOWITZ! DO NOT TAKE HER.
disgusting. ruined my entire freshman year. now have to leave fairfield because i cannot afford to retake this class. never would have had to retake it if she was more helpful and less condescending.
Is she a hard grader, absolutely. That being she curves her test, one test of mine was curved 22 points. She's always open for students to come to office hours. She read every writing assignment of mine before it was due and gave feedback on how I can make it better. Go to her office hours! She's hard but fair. Do the work and you'll be fine
WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. i read her reviews and just assumed people were being harsh. they're not. she requires an unachievable amount of work. do not take this class!
NEVER TAKE THIS WOMAN'S CLASS. please, for the sake of your freshman year avoid this woman at all costs. She is terrible even for Psychology majors, many psych majors have switched just because of this woman. She is sneaky with assignments and unclear on what you should do, and snickers when you miss them. I HATE THIS CLASS.
I honestly hate the fact that I suffered and put so many hours into this class just to get a terrible grade. A semester of complete frustration and nothing in return.
For research methods she isn't bad at all. You're expected to do the work but she's willing to help and explain material outside of class. Class is amusing, you just need to be able to handle some sarcasm.
She is a goofy teacher. She assigns a lot of work, but will help you with editing if you set up appointments to go over the material. If you correct your papers based off the previous ones it will definitely improve your grade. She looks to make sure you are trying.
She teaches a tough course, but she is hands-down the most helpful professor i had at Fairfield. she has high expectations. she challenges you. she's also hilarious.
Her course is really interesting and easy to sit through. Her tests and quizzes are very challenging but she is really not as bad as everyone says. Her humor makes up for it sometimes
Extremely difficult. No matter how hard you try, you will NEVER receive a good grade on your assignments. Very rude too when asking for help; almost likes to see you struggle.
Very interesting lectures and big on participation. She pushes you to such high standards that you learn so much in this class and it is an excellent starting course for Psych majors. The tests are difficult but there is a curve. She helps you figure out your questions rather than answering them right away, which helps you understand the material.
This was the most challenging course I've taken to date. She makes you do the work, her quizzes focus on 100-150+ pgs at a time for 20 questions. You have to take the course for Psych majors but would recommend taking a different prof if you have to take it. Nice person, but you wouldn't want her as your prof. of my class failed out"earned" C-D.
Dr Rakowitz is a great professor. Very helpful, quick responses to emails and wants her students to succeed. People, realize that this is college and you have to do your part to earn a good grade. Generous curve, should've gotten a low B but came out with an A. Show up, Take good notes, read the chapters and you will be fine. Rakowitz is awesome
I wasn't a fan of Rakowitz. I found her unwilling to help me, although I studied a lot and often came to office hours. I found it very hard to do well in her class, because her lecture style was too fast and hard to understand. I am a psychology major but I got a D in the class, as did many of my other classmates. Avoid if you can.
Worst teacher at Fairfield. Hates her job and hates her students. Is very condescending and makes you feel stupid.
Is unhelpful, gives unclear assignments, and gets annoyed when you ask questions. I switched majors because of her class.
Difficult for entry level course
I have never rated a professor before, but I felt the need to warn you. Very knowledgeable about the subject and she teaches the material well, but her tests are way to hard for an intro class. You wont recognize the material on them. Last test my class got an average of 55. Very condescending as well. Do not take.
Very hard psych teacher especially for psych 101. The class averages for our class were Fs and Ds. She refused to change her teaching methods and doesn't give a lot of resources to help a student. She does curve generously to make up for the bad averages. Thankfully, I was able to get a B- in that class but it was the hardest B- I ever worked for.
She is extremely challenging and is never pleased. She is unhelpful in office hours, and her test and quizzes are near impossible. In class, she is very difficult to follow and understand. And don't even bother asking questions because she makes you feel stupid. DO NOT take this class!!!!!!!!
Worst professor I have ever had, ended up changing my major because of her. Is the most condescending person you will ever meet especially when you ask for help on the subject matter.
Rakowitz is an extremely difficult professor. Her lectures only give a small introduction to the material in each chapter. Course grade depends on a few multiple choice tests which are insanely difficult even if you do all the course reading. Took her once and won't take her again.
Professor Rakowitzs class was interesting. Reading the textbook prior to class is not a requirement, but you will end up going through it to complete her questions assignment. Her lectures are pretty formal and concise. Take good notes and create examples from her lecture criteria. Tests are hard and not definitional based! Do the work.
The most miserable person I've ever known. This is an intro class and all psych majors struggled. Is accessible in office hours but takes the 20 minutes to belittle you instead of answering your questions. I have A's in all my other classes and have a C+ in hers, the final grades she posted were all F's, D's and C's.
Awful Professor, do not take. Not helpful in class or out. You go to her office hours and she doesn't help you. Textbook reading is needed for quizzes and tests because there is material not covered in class on the tests. Makes all students uncomfortable in class to the point no one wants to ask questions.
A tough class, but I am not a PY major and managed to get an A without much difficulty. Her tests are difficult because they require true understanding of the material, so u have to put in the necessary work. She is funny and approachable, and helpful when needed. Read the whole textbook and focus your studying on her lectures and u should be fine.
Has a very bad reputation but I don't think she was nearly as bad as people say she is. Lectures pretty much every class, you're graded on tests/quizzes, question assignments, and a final paper. She is very available outside of class and wiling to help. Comes across a little harsh at times but overall a knowledgable and fair professor
The worst professor Ive ever had in undergrad and graduate school. Belittles you during office hours for asking questions. Very unhappy person that looks to make students feel stupid for not knowing answers. Do not take her class she is awful.
I changed my major due to my experience with her class. She mocked me during office hours when I asked her questions on the textbook. Does not encourage class discussion and uses question/answer time to go after students for disagreeing with her beliefs.
The worst professor I have ever had. One of the most condescending people I have ever met. You feel as if she hates teaching and hates her students. Do not take this class, three people in my class ended up changing their majors because she belittled them.
QUITE LITERALLY THE WORST PROFESSOR AT FU. Honestly, she is so mean and actually enjoys upsetting her students. Can't teach a lesson if her life depended on it and if you can't teach yourself you will fail without a doubt. In general, not a good person. Please take this post as a warning she will make your life a living hell. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Her lectures are not that good but expects you to have a very deep understanding of the material. The tests are very hard and you have to read the textbook if you want to do slightly well. Says to ask questions but always manages to talk around it and never actually give you a real answer. No interest in the class doing well, just wants you to pass
AVOID! This was the worst professor I have taken at Fairfield. She does not care and grades extremely harsh. If you care about your GPA and your mental health, avoid her at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Most of the test material isnt even covered in notes but buried in the reading. Thats not even the worst part. Class is horrible. I never asked a single question in that class because of how she responded to my classmates questions. She would constantly make fun of peoples questions to the point where you think youre stupid.
DO NOT TAKE PLEASE! I would give a 0 if I could. She has to be one of the meanest people, she hates her job and clearly shows it. she makes you feel unintelligent and worthless. She has made people cry on multiple occasions. her tests/quizzes are nearly impossible.
Meanest professor ever. Does not care about anything but herself. She assigns the hardest tests in the world and her instructions are horrible. #STAYAWAYFROMSUSAN
DO NOT TAKE!!!! She has no regard for students whatsoever. If you struggle with test-based courses specifically, do not take them. Hands down the hardest class I have ever taken.
Do not take. I read the reviews & heard warnings but I had no other choice. She spends the majority of her time trying to come up with creative ways to call you stupid rather than teaching you about how to fix your mistakes. I genuinely have never met a professor who has done less teaching than her and there is no textbook for reference.
She's not as bad as people say. I always crammed with my studying and assignments and still got an A. You definitely have to read a lot in preparation for the tests and quizzes but it is doable. The lectures were definitely boring at times but okay. I also don't see her as "mean". She definitely isn't for everyone but I've had worse classes.
Please please do not take this class! If you are a freshman going into psychology, this class will make you want to switch your major. She is extremely passive-aggressive in emails when you try to get help. All of her lectures are scattered and unorganized. The entirety of the class is just reading the textbook and taking quizzes.
Borderline make me want to switch out of this major. Brutal situation. Do not recommend.
I have been a straight A student for years and I took AP Psych in high school. This class was so difficult for NO reason and was only graded on about 4 things. Also, this professor basically told me to switch my major-totally discouraging me as a young freshman.
Teacher was an all around nightmare. All she did was put up a slide with 3 words in 18 point font, and she would just talk the entire class period. When someone asked a question she would laugh and make you question why you even asked that question at all. Class is set up for you to fail if you have never taken a psych class before.
Teaches fine, I learned a lot but I also read every chapter from the book she assigned. Quirky personality and can be mean sometimes. Graded by 2 quizzes, 2 tests and a final basically. Exams are multiple choice, and can be difficult but if you use the practice questions you should be okay. Wouldn't take her again, but would live if I had to.
Prof. Rakowitz is the toughest professor I have had at Fairfield, her class is based on 4 quizzes/exams, a few question assignments, socratives, and an open-book final that is very time-consuming. Pay attention in class, read every chapter, attend office hours, and do things as she tells you and you will be fine. Take someone else if you can.
I cant even begin to explain the torture she puts us through. Shes demeaning with every interaction & has never once given positive feedback to any student, even when they deserve it. Impossible assessments and projects. She makes it so no one can succeed in her class. Im no longer a psych minor bc she ruined the whole field for me. Had to withdraw
the feedback this woman gives on assignments is honestly disgusting. if you think you'll do fine in this class bc you took AP psych, you won't be. I wish I knew why this school keeps her around genuinely. A month into the class I ended up withdrawing. sucks that she teaches so many psych classes, feels like there's no escaping her.
Made my first semester horrible. When you do her question assignments it is almost impossible to fully please her because each one you submit is graded differently. Her tests are near impossible and she knows it. Do not take her.
Why do people still register for her Gen Psych class knowing that she is horrible. Anyone! come to the conclusion that it is better to not take Gen Psych than take it with Rakowitch. Please wait a semester and take the course with anyone else!
Don't take her, she's horrible. Not even a case where she's a nice lady and a bad teacher, mean lady, mean teacher, not a good combo.
I had her for gen psych and stats and it seems like she purposely makes the content seem more difficult than it really is. READ THE TEXTBOOK!! You will learn more from the book than from her class. If you are confused, she will laugh at you and make you feel stupid. She genuinely takes pride in the fact that her class averages are mostly Cs.
As a business major, I highly regret taking this course with Rakowitz. Her lectures are super boring and god forbid you don't pay attention because the smallest details that she goes over in class will be on the test. I sound entitled and lazy I know but chances are you are too.
One of the hardest classes I've taken at Fairfield. I took AP Psych in high school and none of my schema seemed to help. Her tests and quizzes are impossible (even if you study upwards of 20 hours). Her lectures are winded and detailed (small details that she mentioned in class once that aren't in the textbook will be on tests).
This class brought on so much stress and I only took it for Magis credit. Tests are extremely difficult and she grades assignments so harshly for no reason. The system she uses to grade is also so confusing. Half of the class failed and she made no effort to make things easier for anyone. Don't take her, it's not worth the unwarranted stress.
INSANELY TOUGH GRADER AND IS NOT CLEAR ABOUT WHAT IS EXPECTED. ASKED ME WHY I DIDN'T KNOW SOMETHING WHEN I ASKED ABOUT IT IN OFFICE HOURS WHICH MADE ME CRY. SHOULD'VE WITHDRAWN LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN MY CLASS!
Do not take her for any class. You basically have to teach yourself bc she makes everything more confusing. Picks apart every part of your tests and is snippy during class. I thought I could make it through but barely pulled a B+ when every other stats class was an easy A. Literally just avoid
Everyone is so dramatic about this class- its not that bad. If you go to class and listen to the lectures and read the textbook you will be absolutely fine. only two quizzes two tests and a final. You get a cheat sheet for assessments. Homework questions are graded poorly but its not that important for your grade. dont stress if you get her.
She is very condescending and unhelpful. 2 tests 2 exams and a paper make up your grade almost entirely. Lectures the whole class and the tests are impossible. You basically have to teach the course to yourself. Read the book, a lot. A very unapproachable person, who is rude and negative and not committed to helping students in any way.
If you can avoid taking Professor Rakowitz, try! Lectures present the material to be more confusing than it needs to be for GenPsych, quizzes & tests are impossible regardless of how many hours you prepare for them (you can have a cheat sheet), and grading on assignments is extremely tough and strange. She is passive aggressive and condescending!
I was automatically enrolled and I didn't have much selection over what professor I got. She is condescending, classes are all lectures, most of the material on the quizzes/tests are from parts of the textbook we didn't go over. You do get to use a note sheet for quizzes, but she makes them due so far in advance.
GENUINELY the worst teacher i have ever had I have a's in every single other class this sem but hers my predicted grade is a d+ she grades so incorrectly and is all around an awful person she makes no sense and her assignments ask so much of you shes literally insane DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF U VALUE YOUR WELLBEING
If I could give this professor a 0 I would. She makes gen psych so complicated when it doesn't have to be. I tried going to office hours and she just belittles you and doesn't help at all. NEVER taking her again I learned nothing and she made her tests so complicated for what.
Do not take with this professor! Extremely harsh grader and gives little to no feedback. She is not very approachable, is snarky, and makes the class answer the questions for her. The lectures are not engaging/lengthy and she mainly tests on material you MUST read from the textbook. She does not give you access to the lecture slides.
Avoid taking her at all costs!!! She made my GPA suffer and made me rethink my major. She makes psychology so unenjoyable and does not tell her class what is expected. Lectures are so boring and her tests are impossible. Just don't do it. Awful
She made my love for psych become a hatred. Every class she lectures and she will say the smallest detail, but yes, you have to write it down because it will be on the test. If you participate and say something wrong and that may be off topic she responds to you in a judge mental way, not helping you, but letting you look embarrassed.
NO. She will make you hate psychology. Your grade is based off only tests/quizzes and a homework assignment. The class average is a C- and she says she "expects better" yet doesn't make any effort to help students.
You'll have to put in serious effort to do well in this class, but it's worth it if you use all the resources - the textbook, study sessions, and tools like Unstuck ai. Lectures can be dry, but engage with the material and you'll learn a lot.
Ultimately ended up just teaching myself out of the textbook. She lectures all class but it doesn't cover a lot of the material needed for tests. I would take someone else if you genuinely want to learn about psych/are a psych major. I was excited about the class and was disappointed. Nice lady, but doesn't seem incredibly passionate or caring.
If you're not a psych major or considering being one, please go for a different teacher. This class is a LOT of work and definitely not easy, people take it out on her but she's honestly not as bad as these reviews say, if you're a psych major you'll definitely learn a lot
I am a psych major and I was very excited to take this class. I studied for hours and I still did very poorly on all of the tests. She does not prepare you at all for how hard the questions on the quizzes and tests are and most of the content on the tests aren't even discussed in class. I would recommend taking another professor for this course.
Attendance is not mandatory unless you want to succeed in this course. Boring lectures, hard tests but she will start teaching new material two weeks before you're tested on past material. Very high expectations for her students but these expectations are not communicated. I am a psych major and would not recommended if you want to be happy.
Dr Rakowitz made this class harder than it needed to be. She wasn't very open to questions and the course was very lecture heavy. The tests were difficult and I've heard better things about other professors. Especially as a psych major, it sucked my first psych class wasn't really with the best professor
I beg you, do not under any circumstances take Prof Rakowitz. She is genuinely a rude person, who will laugh in your face if you make mistakes. She is very unclear about grading, and her tests/homework are impossibly hard. She ruined all interest I had in psych. Use the textbook to study, I learned the most from it and not her lectures/class.
DON'T BE SCARED!! Yes she's snarky and belittles you but if you just read the syllabus and do what she asks you'll be fine. Very few assignments and a harsh grader so don't slack off. Didn't like her as a person, but she is a good professor. Stay on top of the textbook, write down due dates, take good notes, you'll get through it.
NO. Professor Rakowitz was horrible. Tests/quizzes are not based on info she teaches during lectures. When you go to her for help she just makes you feel stupid. She made me hate psychology and it is literally my major... Definitely avoid her at all costs.
I would avoid taking Rakowitz at all costs. She's funny and means well (and loves mint ice cream), but I would have been so lost if I didn't take AP Psych. Look out for her in Tully.
She was the worse professor I have ever had to deal with. The fact she still has a job at this university is deceiving to the students who are interested in psych. She completely ruined psych for me, and has a terrible attitude. PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T TAKE AP PSYCH DO NOT TAKE HER. Truly has deterred me from wanting to continue as a psych major.
I was very nervous going into this class, but I did not find Prof. Rakowitz to be bad at all. She is very knowledgeable about the subject she teaches, the class is very straightforward, and everything is broken down in the syllabus. Her expectations are pretty high, and the required readings were demanding, but you will learn a lot.
Do not take Rakowitz. She is a horrible professor and harshly grades papers. She often sets expectations that make you feel like failure is inevitable. Going to office hours, she makes you feel dumb. Assignments are difficult to navigate because there isn't a clear outline, making it hard to understand exactly what she expects in your papers.
She was so bad I decided to change my major. I've read the syllabus and was still confused. Her class was good and interesting but it just wasn't for me. Do not take her if you did not take AP Psych otherwise you will be lost.
She gave very good lectures and I definitely learned a lot, but her tests had very specific questions that were not very in line with general. You have to do a lot of learning on your own outside of class, which I don't mind, but more than half the test you would have to learn the material on your own.
She is a horrible teacher, makes everything super difficult, grades hard, she is so bad. I am a psych major but I want to switch majors because she was so bad.
Take my word for it- DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR RAKOWITZ. If you are confused about anything, instead of helping she will simply judge you. Psychology is my major, and I lost all my spark of interest for it in her class. During the first semester she tries to get people to quit this major, and honestly it's working. If you can help it, do not take her.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!! She is extremely judgmental, rude, and a terrible, uninteresting professor who gives poor feedback and makes you feel bad about yourself.
I would not recommend this professor. She does not give meaningful feedback, and she is a very harsh grader. She also tends to be judgmental when her students do not understand the topics.
The class was relatively difficult but if you paid attention you could keep up. My main issue was with her attitude towards students - not even me personally, classmates as well. Was condescending and rude, participation was hesitant in class because she made you feel dumb if you got a question wrong
This professor makes every student feel dumb when they ask questions, when they do ask questions, she asks other students to answer instead of answering them herself. The grades consist mainly of exams that include information from one line of the textbook. If you get the chance to not take her class, choose another professor.
Very condescending and does not give good feedback on assignments
Do not take Professor Rakowitz for ANY of your classes. She is condescending and will make you feel stupid if you don't understand something. In order to study for the exams, you basically have to read every single page of the 900 page textbook and the lectures are not helpful whatsoever. I would not take another class with her.
Very nice if she likes you, which she will if you participate a lot and go to office hours. However, she has a tendency to give attitude and be rude when you ask her questions. Lots of reading from the textbook but manageable if you stay on top of it. Wouldn't recommend her for non psych majors.
Dr. Rakowitz is extremely degrading and will laugh at you if you don't know the answer to a question. She encourages office hours, but is not helpful because she'll belittle you. She claims she "doesn't want her students to fail", but she clearly does which is evident in her poor teaching abilities. DO NOT take her because you will not do well.
