She's knowledgeable, but seems a bit disorganized in lecture and sometimes she's hard to follow/understand.
Her notes are completely disorganized. I always had to go to my TA for help because I never understood her lectures.
Not an exceptional teacher, but not the worst either. Lab was miserable, but the rest of the course wasn't that bad.
Pretty cool lady. Has experienced many things in her field. Only complaint is jumping around with her notes/ slightly disorganized.
She has bad handwriting, and her notes and lectures are very disorganized, but she is intelligent and nice.
Very intelligent lady. I really enjoyed the class, she is tough but shes a good teacher and knows what she is talking about. Very easy to get along with. Her test are standardized and pretty difficult but she makes up for that with lab and easy attendance pts.
HORRIBLE notes! She made absolutely no sense and her notes were nothing like her notes! Very unorganized! If you dont need the course...take something else! I love biology but I hated her class!
She is a horrible teacher! Her notes are impossible to follow and her tests are very off the wall! I learned absolutely nothing and would not take her class ever again! If you dont need this class I would say TAKE SOMETHING ELSE! She is AWFUL!
Smart lady and definetly knows what she is talking about. Notes can be a bit spastic and confusing but she lets you have cheat sheets so its not bad. Tests are real hard even with the cheat sheets but she gives TONS of extra credit so an A is not hard if you put forth a little or no effort.
At first I thought she would be really bad because she spoke in such a monotone voice. However, as the year went on, she brought lots of animals into class, which was VERY cool. Also, you got to make a huge cheat sheet for her tests, so pretty much if you can't get an A in here, it's your own fault.
She is an amazing teacher. She teaches in a way that makes you want to learn. She also brings in her animals which is very cool. She is not an easy teacher but if you stick to your work then it will turn out good in the end. I learned a lot from being in her class
She is very knowledgeable of her subject, but she has a hard time explaining it to other people...that is unless your a biology nut like she is. If you see her name, drop it...or if you are good with things in the abstract...you'll be fine.
Very good teacher. You have to be somewhat intelligent to take this class because of her tests. My advice is to take her and to do out of class work such as reading the book a lot. She gives A LOT of extra credit.
An OK teacher. Not a heavy work load, but the tests can be tough. A bad TA could also kill your grade in the class.
This teacher is SUPER easy. Really, I barely study and I'm getting A's in her class. You get a cheat sheet for the tests and even if you don't do that well on those, the lab grades will help a lot. She also curves. The lectures are really boring and you have to show up, but I promise you will live.
She is really boring but the class is really easy. You get to use a cheat sheet for every exam and everytime you show up that is counted as points which will add up to replace your lowest test score. Labs really suck because they treat you like idiots.
She really knows her stuff, but she has a hard time making it easy to understand. You do get to use cheat sheets on all the exams, but they aren't that helpful because all questions require you to understand the material. Some of her questions are very abstract, and lecture is really boring.
shes great, i loved it. lect can be boring but big deal arent most? the down side is labs where they treat you like morons
I didn't much care for Dr. Reichert. Her lectures suck; all she talked about were her spiders. She does let you make a crib sheet for each test, and four for the final, but they didn't do me much good. Also, she replaces your lowest test grade (3 tests total) with your attendence grade, which is 100 if you show up to every lecture.
Easy if you show up to every lecture. She brings a lot of animals so if you are into that type of thing sit in the front the 1st day it will be your assigned seat the rest of the semester
This lady is pretty cooky and quirky sometimes (in a funny way). You can tell she's very interested in the material she teaches. She brings in animals a good amount of the time but her overall tone in lecture puts me to sleep. The tests though, are WAY easy though, barely require much studying at all. She's not bad.
Reichert is a VERY interesting woman. She has a lot of bizarre pets (including a giant tortoise, an iguana, and some small, cute, fuzzy mammals) and brings them to class. On the downside, her tests are poorly written/worded, and she gives confusing explanations! She moves fast in lecture, but there's usually enough time to write what you need.
The lectures were not too bad, the tests are really tough, although she does let you use a crib sheet for every one. She brings all kinds of animals in the class. Come to her lecture review sessions and she gives you a little bit of extra credit.
the information isn't hard, but the tests are. lab is really easy for this class
DO NOT TAKE!!! She explains things that aren't in the book at all. Spends too much time on stupid stuff and can't teach at all.
Dr. Riechert is a really intelligent woman. Though she gets wrapped up in her own work sometimes instead of lectures, if you read the text she assigns it's not a hard class. She's also really good about curving grades and she lets you make test cheat-sheets. Be prepared for her to bring in all of her crazy pets and listen to her wacky stories.
NO!!!! HORRBILE EXAMS!!!!! NOT ONLY CAN SHE NOT EXPLAIN****, HER EXAMS IMPOSSIBLE.
She is very... interesting (to put it nicely). She tries to relate everything to spiders. She does curve ALOT!!! Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended since that grade replaces your lowest test score. A very easy class!
most definetly a nice professor but that doesnt help when it comes to her class. lecture notes are horrible & impossible to understand in order to study for her exams. doesn't follow book so if you dont understand her notes youre screwed. Very odd way of teaching-allows students to use cheat sheets but they don't help one dang bit. DO NOT TAKE.
AGH!! lecture is boring and very hard to understand. Her test are made for Yale students, the only thing that gets you through is lab so GOOO to lab!!! you will be shocked with your final grade. It tends to be higher than expected. She curves a bunch but still is very hard!!
Extremely intelligent. However, bringing giant tortoises, hedgehogs, iguanas, and petrified prehistoric giant sloth dung to class doesn't teach me jack. Tests are near impossible. Let's you use a cheat sheet, but it's no use. If you're bored and you love animals, audit this class; otherwise, avoid this querky lady with a spider fetish at all costs.
Really please don't take her. She is really boring and brings in weird animals which can be entertaining but her lecture notes go too fast and she complains about having to slow down. She makes no sense. Not a good teacher. Labs help a lot especially if you get a good TA like I did. TAKE ANYONE ELSE!!
Dr. Richert is pretty cool since she brings animals to class and was on a t.v. show. She is also very smart, but when it comes to teaching a giant room full of students, her monotone lectures are boring and not very useful for tests. Having a good TA helps a lot.
Dr. Riechert's lets you use a cheat sheet on every exam, even on the final (but they don't help much). Her exams are really tough, but usually curves every exam. Attend lecture because it counts as extra credit points, which is the curve in the class.
She is a good teacher! Her exams are very tough. But dont give up hope, attendance replaces your lowest test grade and if you go to her reviews she will give you an A! All my exam grades were in the 60s (but my lab grade was good) and I still got an A. You need to show effort and improvement in her class and she will like you :)
Her class is so boring and her tests are impossible. But it's ok because the curve and your attendance and lab grades can save you in the end. Sit in front so you can touch the turtle!
She is a crazy spider loving lady. She brings animals 2 class & lets them run around during lecture. Attend all classes because u will get a 100 on a test grade that will replace ur lowest score(u will need all the extra help u can get!) The labs are pointless, boring and long. She lets u bring a cheat sheet 2 the test but it doesnt help at all.
I agree, she is a little crazy but you can tell she loves what she does. Her tests are hard, but she explained it was because she didn't want to lower her standards-basically saying there are a lot of lazy people out there expecting her to give them a good grade-but she helps you out in the end-she curves and gives extra points-books a useless buy
Hard Tests (four for the entire semester, including the final), but she does curve- though don't expect much of one, the first wasn't curved and the last was only 4 points. Puts notes on blackboard (HIGHLY ENCOURAGED IF YOU WANT TO KEEP UP IN LECTURES). Attendance isn't manadatory but you can replace your lowest test. LABS ARE LONG AND POINTLESS
Difficult class. Tests are very difficult. I think you can get some extra credit for attending study sessions. Attendance grade replaces the lowest exam grade, which might save my grade! Pretty boring lectures that are hard to follow. She is terrible at using slideshows.
She really nows her stuff. If you are confused about anything ask her and she will help you out. Go to her study sessions.
Hard tests, but you get a cheat sheet for all 3 of them and the final. will not put anything on the tests that she doesn't go over it in lecture. attendance points replace lowest test score! gives 2 extra points for each study session you attend available each week. class possible if you attend lecture and write really good notes for cheat sheet.
Dr. Reichert knows her stuff. She is a really good teacher. Her test are really hard, but if you go to every lecture u get 100 points in place of lowest test grade. I advice everyone to take her. she's really nice.
Very nice, brilliant lady with good intentions. She just can't teach very well. Tests are 50 multiple choice and easy if you take good notes. Best part is that if you attend every lecture, you get a 100 to replace your lowest test score. Just hope you get a good TA for lab...
Really smart lady, good at/loves what she does. Likes to make class interesting by bringing in her pets. Her tests are pretty difficult, but we could make a page of notes to use on the test. Go to class, make a good cheat sheet and it's not bad at all
Dr. Riechert loves spiders, and she makes a point to mention them often. She puts lecture notes on Blackboard, which are the easiest way to keep up with notes in class. I didn't think that her tests were hard, and lab isn't hard either. She never uses the textbook, and I only opened mine once to look at it.
Whoa were do I start she was a beast. She was very horrible with the slide shows but she loves to bring in animals to try to make the class interesting. Lecture was very boring for me. The only great thing about attending lecture is that if you come to class you can replace your lowest test grade with 100.
I really liked Dr. Reichert. Holds weekly reviews for students, so get there early so you won't have to sit on the floor. When you ask her questions, she doesn't look at you, which I found funny; she looks at the back wall. Don't waste money printing out powerpoints; I just typed notes in Word and it worked well for me.
It was a huge class, but Dr. Riechert was a good teacher and the class wasn't too hard, but still pretty interesting. She knows her stuff and even brings animals into class and lets them walk around sometimes. She gives points for attendance so go to lecture! It ends up being an easy 100 on a test that replaces your lowest one.
She is very scatter brained when it comes to power points! She will jump from subject to subject and not fully explain each subject. She knows her stuff, but she won't slow down for 2 seconds so if you have her, you better have a fast hand to write or type!
Attendance is not mandatory but counts for 100 out of 800 you can receive. Her powerpoints are useless and class is unbearable(monotonous, pointless except for attendance points, etc. READ THE CHAPTERS INDICATED IN THE SYLLABUS. This is the worst biology course I have ever taken. Team challenges are every class and ridiculous.
Dr. Riechert is not fully appreciated until you've had other biology professors. She has weekly reviews, attempts to engage a large class with team challenges, and allows cheat sheets for every test. She often brings in animals to suppliment her lectures. Brilliant woman and a gifted professor, however her mental clarity isn't always spot on...
She hold weekly reviews and tries to help, but her tests are impossible. Even though you have a cheat sheet, no one uses it much. It isn't just memorizing, you have to apply it to the tests and no matter how much my friends and I studied, I kept failing her tests. Her lecture notes don' help unless you read the book and she goes super fast
This class is difficult, but Dr. Riechert has weekly review sessions and is willing to answer any questions before or after lecture. She emphasizes understanding the material, not just memorizing facts. This is part of what makes the course so tough, but it is a good thing because it shows whether you understood the material.
Dr. Riechert is impossible! She's really smart but she has a hard time coming down to explain things on your level if you don't remember every concept from bio in high school. You get a test grade out of attendance so make sure you go to class. She also gives extra credit for attending weekly review sessions. Tests and lectures really suck.
She moves really quickly, selected slides are posted online, but never the ones with information. The average time a slide is on display is twenty seconds. Be quick & take detailed notes and you will be fine. The key to the exams is to get in her head & think the way she would. This class is not that hard, but people stress over it & complicate it.
Very nice teacher and tries to make it interesting, but is very confusing. Rushes through slides. You get points for attendance, so go to class! Tests are impossible, but attend study sessions for help and brownie points. Loves to bring pets to class. Would recommend her if you write really fast. DONT NEED THE BOOK AT ALL!
Can be confusing at times and rushes through slides. Tests are tough but she has a generous grading curve. Loves spiders and brings animals a lot.
A lot of people complain about her lectures, but she does the best she can with 600 people in the auditorium. Her tests are difficult, but she allows you to bring a cheat sheet. A lot of your grade depends on lab work, so your TA is important. If you can't succeed in this class, you don't have any business majoring in a life science.
BORING!!! Her lectures go too fast, and make no sense what-so-ever. She does not follow the book so you cannot look into your book for help. Pray for a good TA so you can help your overall grade with your lab score. Tests are impossible, the averages were failing. It was terrible.
This was a tough class. Lecture was fast and hard to understand. But attendance was mandatory considering it was checked at every class. Hope for a good TA in the class and that he/she will help you understand the material.
She's a very smart person. The tests are hard but, they prepare you to study for other hard science classes.Don't worry about your average an A is like a 75. Just go to lab and every lecture, this will help you out in the long run. As in all college classes make sure the professor knows you are trying.
The first test definitely surprised me. Make sure to study as best as possible, because she makes the tests difficult. In the end, though, people with C's have A's and so on. Just be ready for that first test. Expect it to be hard.
This class is not very difficult. You are allowed an 8x11 cheat sheet front and back for each test and you get to work with a small group. Lectures can also be semi-interesting, especially when she tells stories from her life, and brings in her variety of animals she has collected over the years.
Power points are a mess. I didn't feel like I learned much in lecture, or through her teaching style. You really need to read the book and the chapters assigned. Attendance is a grade (a wonderful grade) so show up. She has her TA take attendance, but I don't know if he actually gets around to everyone. I would have preferred a different teacher.
I'm a Biology major. However, having Riechert made me want to change my major. Her class was so hard to understand, I never knew what was going on. Attendance is key & so is lab. I had a horrible TA & it definitely affected my overall grade. Pray for a good TA & you might be able to make it out okay. Try to avoid her class if at all possible.
I don't undestand much of what she says. Most of her anecdotes are amusing but I depend on the book a great deal as I usually leave class confused. In all fairness, Biology is far from my major but it would be nice to not feel totally lost all the time.
she's a mess. she's really boring and so unorganized.
As a non biology major I feel completely lost in this class. Dr. Riechert knows her stuff, but I feel this class should be altered a bit since it is offered for psych students. The TA tries to clarify at times but she goes so fast it is hard to keep up. Tests are very difficult. Thankfully, she curves & grades on improvement.
This professor is completely lacking in teaching skills. Though she is very knowledgable in her material, she has little ability to relate it to her class. She spends her time talking about her own experiments which tends to not seem to relate to the subject at hand. She is not helpful and seems to believe the biological is the only answer.
This class is hard to understand if you are not a biology major. The professors are very smart but you are totally lost if you do not know much about biology.
i am so confused all the time and do not understand anything we talk about i dread going to class because i feel so lost and dumb in it! Both of the teachers are so smart and know so much but cant really dumb it down for us who have no idea what is going on!
She is very passionate about knowledgable about Biology but sometimes has a had time relating to the students. The tests are difficult but not unbearably so and you are allowed to use a crib sheet on the test. As a biology major I really enjoyed this class and feel like I learned a lot.
Dr. Riechert is brilliant and very knowledgeable when it comes to Biology. However the labs are horrible and boring, and she has a hard time relaying information to students. She is the only person to teach the honors section, though, and I feel like the pain was worth it for what I learned.
Dr. Reichert is a really awesome professor. She and the TA's could be really vague with when and what assignments are due, but they will gladly clarify things if you just ask. Easy A, and I put forth little effort. Labs were either childish or extremely fun (i.e. 15 dissections in one morning). She often brings animals to class.
Took her for Honors Biodiversity. The exams are fairly difficult but there are other assignments to balance out and boost your grade. Dr. Riechert is brilliant and an interesting character, but she can sometimes be unclear and scatterbrained. I would recommend her class.
Dr. Riechert is very unclear about assignments, and I often wondered what I was supposed to be learning. However, she is a very interesting and enthusiastic teacher and, although it seems difficult, it's not too tough to make a good grade.
She is one of the worst professors I've even encountered. Her lectures were pointless except that's where she assigned homework. Except the assignment was always vague and unintelligible. I was constantly frustrated with her teaching method. In the end, she was a really easy grader but I learned nearly nothing. And am stuck with a useless textbook.
Literally learned nothing. Her teaching method is absolutely horrendous and quizzes are pointless to study for. "Honors diversity textbook" is the black and white copy of a regular bio book except twice as expensive.
Professor Reichert knows her subject area well and is extremely knowledgeable, but the she is disorganized when it comes to formatting of notes; they are almost cryptic. There are daily quizzes but they are not too difficult and you can bring a sheet to help. She can be a little confusing when she elaborates, but she is nice and gives many As.
Her class is very useless, but you should definitely attend, as there are quizzes. While she doesn't really teach ANYTHING, almost everyone I knew ended up with an A for the class!
She is the worst professor I have ever had. Her classes are disorganized, and I never know what the assignments are. I walked into this class expecting to learn something and feel like this was a total waste. It also doesn't help that she randomly calls on people and takes off points when you don't know the answer. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS.
Dr. Riechert was very knowledgable in her field, but is a very poor teacher. Expectations for assignments were very unclear. I learned very little in this class. The final exam was really difficult, the highest grade in the class was like a 70. Luckily, she curved the final grade so I got an A even though I did very bad on the exam.
Mrs. Riechert does know a lot, but I learned absolutely nothing at all in this class. She gives attendance quizzes every day, but they are completely open note so just print off and bring the lecture notes to class. She gave us an optional final which is good because we all would've failed it. She is very scatter-brained, but the class is an easy A
The class was super easy and as long as you take notes (for the open note quizzes) you will get an A.
Dr. Riechert is an EXTREMELY smart lady; however, she cannot teach. There is a quiz every class, which you are allowed to use notes on. However, from what I have heard, this class is easier than BIOL 150 and if you are an honors student it is an easy A if you try. If you have an A at the end of year you are guaranteed an A.
Dr. Riechert is a very smart lady, and has a great reputation for her research as a spider ecologist. However I didn't learn anything in this class. Her lectures were often repetitive and confusing. She gives daily open note quizzes. Read the powerpoints the night before class and attend lecture and you'll have an A and won't have to take the final
I appreciated Dr. Riechart's class because it was a pretty easy A for an honors class, but the subject is extremely boring and she doesn't do much to help. It honestly seems like she doesn't even know what's going on. The TA's weren't the best, they were harsh graders. If you take her, pray your TA's are nice!
Dr. Riechert cares a lot about all her students and wants you to get the most out of her biodiversity class. However, the lectures are extremely boring and lack student engagement. There's a quiz almost every lecture, and it's graded very harshly by a TA. Just hope yours is more easy-going than mine was. As far as I know, there is no final exam. :)
There are quizzes at the beginning of every class over the notes from blackboard and our book chapters//throughout class you can correct your quizzes for half credit back per question//group challenges every day for large participation grades//no tests in the class and two exams// one exam was a 25 point group exam and one was a 100 point individual essay---class average was in the 80's on both//class can be boring but the books are interesting and grades come easily///final exam is optional
Dr. Riechert is respected in her field and has done cool research, but she does not know how to teach and often gets confused. Her notes are so disorganized they verge on incomprehensiblity. She gives extremely hard closed note quizzes every class on the readings and notes, but luckily there are a ton of points so it balances. Didn't learn anything
Dr. Riechert just clearly did not care about this class and, put in minimal effort. She gave the TA's most of the work and just came in, read power points, and went on her way. I learned absolutely nothing during this course, but it least it was an easy A. You get one group for the whole year and almost everything is a group grade, so choose wisely
She has a bad rap, but only because her class structure is so different from a high school class. Dr. Riechert truly was an amazing teacher and has earned my badge of approval.
She gets confused easily. Her lectures have nothing to do with the tests. Expect a quiz every time class meets. Group "challenges" everyday instead of actual learning. Very dull class. The passion to teach simply isn't there.
Even though she has done great work in her field, she is clearly past her prime. She doesn't know how to work any technology, often shows up to class unprepared, and gives a lot of the responsibility to her TA's. Teaching skills and classroom organization are sub-par at best.
I truly dreaded attending this class. It's super easy, but the lectures are incredibly boring and often incoherent. Her expectations for in-class assignments are very unclear and our TA's never really knew what was going on either. Additionally, be sure to attend class because there is a quiz at the beginning of each class.
Dr. Riechert is hilarious! I loved going to her class. Though disorganized, it is very easy to get an A in her class. You will get groups in the beginning of the semester and do daily challenges and quizzes. Tests were very easy. She let us do corrections and have a take home test. She even exempted those with As from the final! I would take again.
Dr. Riechert is a respected faculty member at UTK, her class was fairly easy though also a little disorganized. On tests we were allowed a cheat sheet and we were exempt from the final exam if made an 80 or above on each test. Quizzes were every week. I think she may have mentioned she was retiring after this year, but I enjoyed her class.
