Psychotic hippy feminist- avoid if you are male, but class is still easy
Hippie feminist, yes; psychotic, no. Classes are interesting and make you think
pretty boring prof. seems to play favorites with some
Super nice. VERY helpful. She's funny and cool, but intimidating in a school marmish sort of way too. Hippyish, yes; psychotic? NOT!
Unfair!class seems easy but she makes it very hard
very helpful and kind. talks quickly and quietly, so you better pay attention.
She's a little odd, but if you read the books, you really shouldn't have a problem. She is a little intimidating.

Make sure to clarify everything. She tried to screw us all out of good grades by her holistic education idea. Otherwise an easy class. She's a bit on the mental side
Hard hard class. LOTS of reading and writing. Your papers must match her style to get an A. Be prepared to buy into 'holistic education' theories, but if you're a good sport about it you'll do fine.
Awesome professor, if you read the books, you WILL pass the quizzes. Exams are essay are are easy if you put your thought into them. SHe hates people who do not show up to class, recommend not doing this!
the first guy was right, i write better than her.
To all you whiners (especially the dipstick 101 below), think you can do better? Have ANY of you been published? She editted 2 of my papers so well I decided to send them in & they were PUBLISHED! Yeah, I could do that with 101 students proofreadi
Do not under estimate her exams. She is fair if you put forth the effort. One of the best instructors in the English department. She may be a lil odd but aint we all.
She makes 10 mistakes with each breath in her lecture. She obviously wanted to be a kindergarten teacher because she treats the class like that- we had to sit and color for 2 hours! If you want to get any serious learning done, don't take her.
Wonderful! No tests, just daily quizzes based on readings - fun projects instead of exams. Really knows what she is talking about and has a passion for what she is teaching. I will be definately taking more classes with Sue.
Easiest class Ive had at CMU in 4 years. If you don't mind reading then this is your class. U watch a movie every day and i am still trying to figure out how they will actually count this easy class towards my degree.
Excellent teacher! A wonderful asset to Central Michigan University! Don't beleive any of the negative feedback left on this instructor. You will definately bring much valuable skills and abilities from her class! Highly recommend you take her classes
She seems like a lot of fun. Definitely a little on the "out there" side, but as said below, who isn't? She's just honest and open about. Very fun, and has respect for student opinions.
Funny, laid back... but be prepared to meditate in class and for assignments.... YIKES!
Things we're fine until her Screenplay Assignment. She saw my work two weeks prior and didn't tell me I was going in a direction she didn't like. So come grading time she totally screws me over. It's a nice class but I don't like at all how she didn't bother to tell me after two workshop sessions.
condescending. acts as though she teaches middle school. big fan of jesus and talking about faith. will teach you things you should have learned in high school(like basic literary terms.) this in a 300 level. i was completely and totally unimpressed from day 1. ORAL final too. no good.
An o.k. class. its fun up until the screenplay writing (which you better be creative on) and the exam is oral. Yuck!
she was an okay teacher but she really played favorites and i missed one day of class and ended up with a B+ even though i told her on the first day I would be missing that day and she told me i couldn't make it up or go to the other section she taught! very unclear about what she wants
One of the best professors I have had at CMU. She re-sparked my intrst in reading (eng 326), introduced me to one of my new favorite authors (Eng 345) and changed my teaching prospective (eng 460). Definatally take her. Definatally one of the best Profs here at CMU
I really loved this teacher! She is very laid back and understanding. She believes in learning what you want to learn...so you basically get what you want out of the class. She made school and learning fun. We even got to meditate and camp outside!

She was nice, but played favorites. Although we read good books, I'm not really sure what I got out of the class except picking apart movies that would otherwise enjoyed. Each class period was seperate from another and other than the literary and cinimatic terms, were not tied in any way. Watching the movies was the best part of the class.
it was cool watching movies every week. screen play is hard. DONT GIVE POINTS TO THE CRITICAL BOOK REVIEW for the screen play. If you take the class, you'll understand.
Amazing!! I would definitely recommend taking her for any English class. She is very helpful and understanding. Also, the classes are interesting and you actually have fun learning the topic.
I hate the ****! She is the meanest lady I have ever met. I thought the class would be easy, it was until the screenplay and then the final what a complete joke. She said you can use a note card but then takes off points for reading from it. She is rude and disrespectful to her students. She def. plays favorites and she doens't learn names!
This class was somewhat interesting (even though I wasn't interested in the material once I saw it) and I had fun with the screenplay. However, she gives you vague instructions, and then vague help when you need clarification. Try someone other than Dr. Schiller for this class.
boring lady, the class is 3 credits and goes for 4 hours once a week, you will want to shoot yourself, she power trips, she is rigid
She has a tendency to be vague on a lot of things, but all that really means is that you should probably ask her yourself instead of waiting around for her to remind you of due dates, etc. She was very helpful when you had a question, and although she had a quirky sense of humor, you will be fine in the class if you keep an open mind.
Dr. Schiller is a big believer in holistic methods, so her class is a bit chaotic sometimes. Despite the chaos, I learned a lot from her. Her tough grading will make you want to work harder and she's helpful if you just ask questions. I'd definitely take her again.
i love her! she is one of my favorite professors thus far. she is extremely helpful if you ask her a question and she is very open minded. i highly reccomend taking this course from her!
not the nicest prof out there but not horrible either- can be pretty severe but wants to help her students- just prefers them to take the initiative...read the notes online, read the stories (she chooses BORING ones- i'd recommend some serious caffeine with a side of sparknotes), go to class and do the work and you'll be fine
Schiller is utterly clueless and her class was a waste of my time. Her grading system is not consistent and completely random. She is not precise on what she wants. When it came time for end of semester presentations, more than once she would call out students on being incorrect in front of the entire class, something I saw as unneccessary and rude
I enjoyed this class. Some people have mentioned that she seems scatterbrained, but she brought notes with her to class that laid out everything we were going to do. It is hard to go to a four hour class, but she seems interested in what she is teaching, and in the students, she is learning our names. Doesn't do points, does grades for each thing.
She does not have a fair grading system, she does it based on the grade point for the assignment not points, so there isn't a range of options/levels to each grade. Her grading isn't that consistent. I had an A, went to every class, then got a C on the final. All you do is watch movies and read books, there really isn't any new information.
I had an awful experience. The class has A LOT of work, but that was expected. Just do the work and you'll be mostly okay. But she gave a "holistic" final with barely any guidelines... so I talked with her daily regarding my plan. She said that my idea was fine, I wrote over 30 full pages. She gave me a D and said I didn't understand the final??
Very hard to understand and inconsistent with directions. Tends to seemingly space out during class. Invites you to state your opinion on readings and argues against it (in a negative way) if it doesn't match hers exactly.
Fairly easy class, but very dull lectures. Responds well to begging. Also has terrible taste in books and films. Unless you like watching overly sentimental crap, take a different section.
She preaches a "holistic" style of teaching, but generally just makes your life difficult with every assignment by adding busy-work to everything doe in class. She made me print out my work in laughably huge print (not really that bad, but it's annoying) and generally tends to be preachy and condescending when addressing students.
Studies in Authors - Willa Cather - Probably one of the driest authors ever and one of the most seemingly useless classes ever. Schiller is a nice enough person, but she's a holistic prof with unclear expectations for projects and responses, I would not recommend this class. Loose rubric, loose grades.
This was supposed to be an ENGLISH class, it wasn't at all. She is condescending, treats students like children, and is just outright awful. I have never disliked a prof as much as I dislike her. Her maps are ridiculous, you can spend 8 hours on the thing and be really critical and only receive a B-. She is just outright awful.
The worst professor I have ever had. Her grading is unreasonable. She is the only teacher to ever make me cry. DO NOT TAKE HER. You will regret it.
Worst professor I've had so far. Inconsistent, STARTS CLASS EARLY, apparently unable to comprehend student questions. Changes due dates and class schedule frequently. On a paper, I was evaluated as having an A in 5/6 rubric categories, and a D in the 6th category. I received a D on the paper... DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS PROFESSOR.
Yes, the class can be hard and confusing. Yes, she does not explain things very well. However, while she may not be the best teacher she isn't as bad as some people say she is. If you are confused she will gladly meet with you to look over a paper! So, while she may not be the best teacher ever, she does care about the students and their learning!
I was never interested in going to this class because it was so boring I almost fell asleep everyday. I felt it was pointless to go because she would just hand out a paper and read it to us straight out. I liked the material because I like reading, but I hated going to the class.
She is extremely scatterbrained and confusing. She also treats her classes like they are high school students. As a junior in college this is very annoying.
She will read to you for an hour from her mistyped notes and show personal pictures about Willa Cather. She grades harshly and blames the entire class for not doing well on an assignment when she changed guidelines multiple times. She grades incredibly subjectively, so participate and make sure she likes you. Do the readings every week.
Not a bad professor. Her reading responses are a breath of fresh air although sometimes they can be confusing. Also, Willa Cather can sometimes be a dull subject but there could be worse authors. Lastly, while she can grade pretty harshly on all of the little assignments, she has a pretty lenient grading scale in terms of the final score.
This class was very hard due to the fact that she will change the guidelines of what she expects with a paper. Also when you ask how she is grading something she does not know and makes up a grading scale out of nowhere. Another thing that is wrong with this class is she tells you to write something out of nothing with no explanation.
she is ridiculous. she expects perfection from papers out of a 100 level english class.
One time I went to her office hours to ask a question and she was mad cause i didnt just look at the citations in the book. Absurd grader. Took 2 weeks on a paper and took it to the library to even have them look at it and still got a bad grade. I have never dropped out of a class as quickly as I did when I got that paper back.
DOOOOOOOOO NOTTTT HAVE THIS PROF she is by far one of the worst professors out there, she has a terrible personality and is just flat out rude all the time, she will approve a thesis and then give it a D while she is grading, has too much pride to realize that she messed up in grading and is just flat out terrible
Dr. Schiller, although a tough grader, was very personable. I would suggest her class out of any of the ENG 101 classes because she doesn't have to follow the normal boring curriculum, she can do what she wants. She comes up with a pretty interesting semester and is really helpful if you ask her questions! She actually makes you better at English!
I would not wish this class with this professor on anyone. Dr. Schiller is rude, and a tough grader. Every paper topic was super specific but very very abstract. Once she realized everyone was failing, she started giving random extra credit just to help us pass. If you do get stuck in this class, USE OFFICE HOURS. It's the only way you'll pass.
She's just... Not good. She's out of touch with her students and as a result the students suffer.
I have never actually gone out of my way to rate a professor, but out of my 5 yrs of school she has by far been the worst. Mandatory class, OK. Lots of homework, fine Being rude, unclear, unreasonable, and going out of her way to make the course more difficult, not okay. I wish I would have listened to everyone else's comments.
Dr. Schiller is one of my favorite English professors I've had at CMU. If you actually do the readings and can form thoughts and questions about them you can easily get an A. Go to her office hours or have her look at your paper before the due date, she is always eager to help. She's only tough on people who don't appreciate the class or don't try.
Every class there is are two study questions due on the reading(s) and/or reading responses. If you don't plan on showing up to class basically the whole semester then don't even bother taking the class. You will fail.
Out of 12 semesters, 6 years, and over 48 CMU professors, I can honestly say she is the worst one I have had. If you're not considered a "smart" student, which is basically if you haven't taken creative writing, then she will not pay attention, listen, or help you during the semester.
I did not miss a single class all semester in Dr. Schiller's class, and I received A's on all assignments. On the final exam, which was 20% of my grade, she decided to give me a C- because I was too vague, yet she wanted the exam responses to be two pages or less. Very unclear on directions, extremely tough grader, and loves to argue. Do not take!!
Dr. Schiller is very specific with assignments, and TRIES (is not always successful) in giving good directions. She is a tough grader but I got A's on both of the major papers in this class (Just have her approve your thesis beforehand). There are only TWO papers and I took the WI version of this class. I would recommend for an easy WI credit.
Professor Schiller's classes can be confusing at first because her instructions aren't always super clear. However, she is always open and available for help after class and during office hours. You NEED to show up for class because attendance is part of your grade. If you do your reading and aren't afraid to ask for help you'll do just fine.
She has you write 4 essays total, all on abstract concepts. She's extremely educated on writing and literature and I think expects too much out of an intro English class personally. She lectures a little, but they're awkward and everyone stares at each other as she searches for ways to explain her papers no one understands. However i learned alot
Dr. Schiller was hands down the worst English professor I have ever had. She did not conduct this class in the traditional 101 manner, but rather created her own criteria based on "beauty and how to sustain your happiness." We never received a rubric or concrete expectations for any of the four papers we wrote, and she was an extremely harsh grader
Dr. Schiller's class was one of the most time-consuming and difficult classes I have ever experienced. She completely went away from the standard organization of regular ENG 101 classes. We wrote 4 paper throughout the whole semester. Each on abstract thought. You also had to keep a journal and write quotes from a book each day of the week.
Dr. Schiller is a very stern, hard professor. However, she cares so much. I almost dropped her class because I was doing horribly in it, but I started going to her office hours, and she helped so much! I took a paper in and she went through line by line with me so I would get an A. Now, she is a reference for me on job apps! She has a good heart.
Her instructions are very vague and she is a very tough grader. I needed this class for a certificate requirement but had the chance to opt out of it. I regret not opting out! Very wishy washy with instructions and is very critical of work. Only take this class with her if you absolutely have to.
Do your best and you should be fine.
I had to work EXTREMELY hard to pass this class. I've seen some say she's only hard for those who don't appreciate the class but I found that to be untrue. I wanted to love this class but she grades very tough (she gave me a C because she didn't like my subject). She seems nice but she's not very clear on instructions and will punish you.
Susan does not communicate with her students at all. There was no clarification on what the exams/quizzes/papers were on, and was not helpful at all about what she expected. She was very rude to her students as well. You could not ask questions about clarification either, there was no way to pass this class.
Dr. Schiller is the WORST educator I have ever had over the course of my life. Jus bad at teaching; when she came to "look over my paper" she just told me to move things to certain places and write in what she said instead of leaving me with the tools to become better myself. Also, her input was not optional, as critiques should be. Horrible class.
Dr. Schiller is underrated on this website. She IS stern and set in her ways, however she DOES care A LOT. She knows the first essay is tough to get a good grade on, so she weighs it lower. Many people rate her bad because they don't have self discipline. This class is very individually paced, you have to stay on track and this is where many fail.
I took her writing intensive class, there were only 2 papers. She is not clear on her grading criteria and her feedback is condescending. She has little respect for her students opinions.
Schiller was by far the worst professor I have had. A very tough grader and unclear with her critiques. When asking questions about the papers she does not answer them or do anything to try to make you a better writer. Very difficult to work with and overall a pretty rude professor.
Professor Schiller is a great professor but her level of expectation is high. She has this rule that she can only check your essay once and after that she wont look at it until its time to grade. I wish she would change this because a lot of people take her class to get the credit and pass. In a way she treats the class like english is our major.
She hates her students and talks to them like they are idiots and doesnt respect them. Do not take her class.
Professor Schiller is stern, but ultimately wants the best for her students. She is strict, honest, and will grade tough in expecting that it will help you become a better writer. For some students harsh grading teaches nothing besides stress. By far the hardest class I've taken, strictest professor, and unaccomidating to ANY situation or scenario.
She is horribly mean. I stopped going to class because I could not handle her rudeness. She was a tough grader and does not care about her students. She does not give good feedback and often marks things down for no reason. CMU does not have a survey for her if I could I would give her zero out of five.
She is horrible. Do not take her class.
Teacher is awful, she grades so hard and her feed back is awful. i got help from the writing center multiple times and i still got bad grades. Essays are weird topics and stuff you will struggle with writing. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER
Worst professor I have ever had. The topics she chooses for these huge essays that we do are stupid. I don't know how she expects us to write so many pages about something barely any of us have any interest in. Not to mention, her comments when she grades do not feel like critiques. She's rude about it and they have not helped me get better at all.
I would not take this class again & especially with this professor. We had to do 3 essays in which the topics made no sense & she never explained to us what they were exactly. How do you expect your students to write 4+ pages of something when we don't even know what to do. I had this class online due to her not being on campus and it was boring.
I pride myself on being a good writer. Never in my life have I been graded so harshly. All the things we write on make no sense. There is no way to get credit sources on vague topics. And then she will go through your paper and tell you to take out everything!! A six page paper on some nonsense quote. She is condescending. Mean towards students
Confidently can say she is the worst professor I have ever had. She is rude, grades on confusing criteria with an iron fist, gives asinine cookie cutter assignments that analyze convoluted quotes that she states must be spoken about as if her opinion is an objective truth or you will fail the class, and is completely out of touch and not helpful.
this professor is absolutely awful, would NEVER take this course with her again. She is not compassionate and does not care if her students succeed. The only way to receive a good grade is to go to her office hours and suck up to her. She is terrible, and made this class a living hell.
She made this class extremely difficult with very unclear grading guidelines. She would tell us one day that if we made a certain mistake in our paper we would fail the entire paper and then showed us an "A paper" the next class period that had the exact mistake she said would make us fail. Overall she made the class harder than it needed to be.
awful.
Very unclear, will explain something and then almost contradict it. Rude. HARD grader regardless of how good of a writer you are
She was very rude when giving feedback or comments on essays. Her word choice is very condescending and makes you feel dumb. She did not allow you to work with others for help, and her essay topics were so out of the ordinary and extremely hard to write about and understand.
Professor Schiller is a very tough grader and does not give clear feedback. Her essay rubrics often do not align with her feedback comments and her essays have very strange prompts. I feel bad for anyone who had to take her class!
