She is a little tough, but all chemistry courses are tough! she makes you understand chemistry very well. she does have some weird rules!

She was one of the best teachers I have ever had. She explains concepts very well and when you leave the class you have a very good grasp on chemistry.

Very good teacher. Knows her stuff extremely well and can explain anything. Show an interest in the subject matter and she will show an interest in you. Dr. Shih's lectures will probably be your best taste of a class at a 4 year university.

VVV Quit your whining. She knows her stuff and has the balls to tell you you're an idiot. she always answered my questions, but her classes are in no way easy. No one explains things better than her. I made the mistake of waiting till 153 for shih :(

Once she gets to know you she loosens up. She is always in her office if you need help and will field more questions there then during her lecture. Looking at the alternate options for teachers. I would say she's the best.

Tough but one heck of a good instructor. If you want to know your Chemistry take Shih. If you're looking for an easy A and don't care what you learn, look elsewhere.

I am taking the 3 wk crash course with her and to be honest, she is a very good teacher. Yeah she hates everybody esp men, but she knows a lot about chemistry and makes sure that you get out of that class knowing sumthing. I haven't taken her test yet.

Just finished 3-week suicide course for 152 and 153. Shih is an extremely good teacher, knows material very well. If you really want to learn chemistry very well, take her, if you want a good grade take someone else.

She is a hard teacher but definitely knows her stuff. If you're looking to LEARN I highly recommend her. Go elsewhere for the easy grade because she is not going to give it to you... and honestly, she'll know if you're there to learn or not.

Shih is the best you could have. Not only does she explain things well but she grades fairly and is always available to help. Shih wasn't even my teacher yet she always answered my ???s. Yes, the class is hard,get over it. If you show the willingness to learn and work your butt off you can get an A.

She seems rude, but if you go to her office and talk with her and ask questions she really isnt to bad. Dont be rude to her or disrespectful of she will seem rude. Hard class but if you talk to her and ask questions she isnt to bad, just not a HYPER FRIENDLY lady. Friendly but doesnt show it well.

One of the best professors I've ever had. Don't go into the class looking for a "friend" or an easy A, because you won't find either. Yes her tests are hard, it's chemistry. She's a fantastic teacher, so if you study you will do well. Her quizes are off your notes and she's always available for help

Easy A

If you want an easy A, you have the wrong teacher. She's a phenomenal professor that makes you EARN your grade. Yes..her course is hard, but you learn a lot from her. Study off your old quizes and DO THE HOMEWORK! Even though she doesn't grade it..you'll do a lot better on her exams if you do.

She has got standards. If you're too lazy or don't have pride in your work, you will bomb. If you study, if you wnat to learn, she is a good teacher.

Dr. Shih is incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated to Chemistry. A little rough around the edges, but if she sees that you care about your grade and the class, she can be your best friend. Hint: If you can manage a smile from her, you are going to love her class.

This is not an easy class, so dont go looking for an A. By the way, did any one notice that this is College!!!! You have to work for your A, and she always helps anyone that approaches her with a question. Stop complaining, and do the work that is expected of you in College!!!

Prof. Shih can come off harsh at first, but shes really more bark then bite. Once the class filters out all the people that do not really want to be there with those who want to learn, it gets better. She does not GIVE you a grade, you have to earn your grade. Its a tough class, and she is a tough teacher, but if you want to learn chem, take her.

For all the people who gave this lady a bad rating, you must not have wanted to pass the class. She is only mean to slackers, if you signed up for the class you should expect it to be challenging. Shih is a very good teacher, if you go outside of class to ask questions she is very helpful, the tests were hard, but what do you expect.

She's pretty hardnosed, but if you pay attention and study hard, you can ace the class. Her teaching methods are fairly orthodox, and she will not tolerate any slacking, but overall a very good teacher

I hate chemistry and at first thought i was doomed by Shih. I did horrible on her first test but once I actually began to pay attention, ask for help and work at the class I did fine. I ended up w/ an A in her class. She's not impossible, just requires some hard work. B/c of this class I understand the small amount of chem i have in grad school

She can make ur chem life miserable BUT you can change that by asking her for help, she is very helpful out of class and is quick to help over emails....just swallow ur ego and talk to her....youll end up doing well oh and of course STUDY HARD!

It's the hardest class I had at COD. 1552 is a hard course but she made it harder then it should be. U had an hour to do her tests that were designed for a 2 hour class. That included multiple choice, vocab, an essay question and the 10 hardest problem solving questions by the book plus 5 that the book didn't teach. Ask her for help, or fall short.

I got an A !

i took this class right after high school and i really had a hard time with it. she expects you to read the book and know what she's talking about all the time. she is very strict. She is smart and knows a lot about chemistry. she wasn't mean to me because i always ask for help and i was pregnant when i was in her class.

Shih is tough, but I did learn alot from her.

As a new college student, this class ripped me into pieces. However, it set a precedent and gave me objective to give me focus in life. Her attitude, I believe, comes from a place that our culture lacks a lot of discipline and few people take the time to understand the physical universe around them. While I dropped her class, I am now a chemist.
