loved her - if you talk to her about problems or rescheduling exams, she's helpful and flexible. must love history, though. and write FAST.

No help in class and even less help out of class. Tries to work in her little feminist theories to the extreme. Insane amount of information to memorize for essay tests, although I suppose its like all other history classes. Avoid her nonetheless.

Hands down the worst experience of my college career. Did all the course work with a C into the final exam. Received an F. Never replied to my emails. Lectures disorganized and nebulous. Tests stressful and unfair. Wonder why not teaching this semester...

Don't know what these people are complaining about. Subject is incredibly hard to teach... 400 years of world history in one semester? Impossible. She does her best, but often does not get to the point.
She's pretty straightforward and gives a fairly linear (but bland) lecture class in and class out. She doesn't really make her class think or react to the material, she just lectures and expects you to remember the broad ideas, people, and events on the tests. Boring, but not terrible.
Totally disorganized, totally uninspiring, and totally not worth the misery. She is the kind of prof that can make you hate any subject. Don't take her classes to satisfy group requirements. You will regret it.
She expects alot, and grades hard. You don't really need to do the readings as long as you can stay out of class discussion, but i think i would have gotten more out of the class if i had participated more. Couldn't really tell if she was nice or not, she definitely doesn't take**** though.

Worst teacher in UD. Does not care about the students and any difficulty with the material. Makes the tests EXTREMELY hard. Does not explain what will be in the exam and grades horably. She is also very very very unorganized. Never hands back tests or quizes on time. Also forgets about any papers she has to grade/hand back. DONT take her class!
Ummm...she is very unclear, skips around ALOT, and her grading is not very specific. It is very opinionated, so if you do take her class, become a teachers pet!!!!

Wow, after reading these freshman reviews ... GROW UP! Dr Shoemaker is a great professor, one of the best in my 4 years here. Also one of the only professors that can lectures for 3 hours without a blackboard, powerpoint, textbook, or slides and still hold class interest. Knows the material well, highly recommeded for history buffs - outstanding.

I went into this thinking, ok boring history class, and for the most part i was right, but certain points she made were extremely interesting. She did an excellent job of related past events to current ones. She makes it pretty clear in class what the tests will be on, the readings were a pain though.
Worst class I've ever taken at UD. Heard that the other sections with different professors were much clearer and more interesting. She is not helpful at all and does not care about her students in the slightest. Don't take this class with her, seriously consider taking it with ANY OTHER PROFESSOR unless you absolutely did to.
Professor Shoemaker is a great teacher. She gives all exams questions before the exams, so if you do badly on them, you obviously have not studied. If you take the essay questions and actually study, then you will do fine.
Worst class ever! She is very unclear in teaching and is tricky. Did not tell students what she wanted as an answer for her ID's on the exam until afterwards because she said no one would listen anyway! Test questions unclear and class attendance counts towards grade.
Good professor, gives you essay questions that will be on test, does grade tests with alot of detail, but makes interesting points in class and shows how everything fits together.
I love history and I disliked this teacher immensely. She is very knowledgeable but she jumps around in her lectures and makes it difficult to take notes. Very old fashioned and makes no use of the Internet or powerpoints. Gives you the essay questions before the exam but grades them very tough. Not recommended at all!!!
Very nice and helpful. Loves her subject and is a good story teller (history!). Enjoyable, interesting class.
She is an excellent instructor, and I did not find her grading to be all that tough. The research paper was alittle challenging, but this is college. Maybe she is getting soft in her old age. Great class!!
This class is a lot of work for being a 100 level. Exams were graded very severely, there was a short response paper or two every week, and a paper at the end. If you're willing to devote a substantial amount of time to this class, you'll do fine.
Awesome, really great professor, probably one of the best at UD. She has very interesting lectures and gives you the essay topics for the test.
Can be rude at times and seems very standoffish but once you get past that this class isn't that bad. Provides a decent lecture every class and is very good at keeping the class' attention for over an hour (which is a feat for a lot of history profs). Also gives essay topics out well before test days which makes studying less cumbersome.
WORST TEACHER EVER! unclear grades hard and gives a quiz on material that we have yet to go over. she also is very unorganized and gives out wrong IDs for the quiz. DONT TAKE HER its a mistake. I work very hard and go to every review I can and I am nearly getting by I have never done so poorly in my LIFE!
Dr shoemaker is the WORST teacher ever!!!!! She rambled on and on. Doesn't talk about anything that is going to be on the quiz. Completely boring, i use to love history not after this class.
this is the worst class ive ever taken at UD. its an entry level class and as a sophomore it shouldnt have been this hard. harsh grading, she's rude and mean and doesnt seem to care if you pass. her reviews are basically every single vocab word in the chapter. TERRIBLE.
I am not a history major and took this class because of a last minute drop/add with limited options. I expected to have a negative experience because of the prior postings. However, I must say that Dr. Shoemaker was excellent. Her lectures were organized and interesting, and the class was very relatively easy.

Her lectures were interesting and for the most part I enjoyed taking notes. I enjoyed reading the main Textbook for the most part. However, her expectations for the exam were unclear despite sending us review guides, though the first were sent just 2 days before the exam. Not recommended if you don't want to devote hours of reading and studying.
She is horrible! Lectures don't match assessments. Excessive reading. Expected an insane amount of time and effort on students part, but offered little of her own time and effort. Graded work passed back after exams. Doesn't give reviews and maps out until weekend/few days before exam. Doesn't respond to email. Generally unfriendly, even mean.
Knows her material, but her presentation of knowledge is difficult to follow. She lectures the entire class rather than posting any sort of outline. Exhausting to keep up with her facts - she delves into unnecessary topics and at times, impossible to follow what she is even talking about. Exams are loosely based on information she covered.
Absolutely hated this class and professor! The exams were tough and consisted of an essay that you definitely need to memorize before the exam. Read the book, go to class periodically, study A LOT and get a B!!

Fine teacher for 300-level courses. Doesn't do nearly as well in big 100-level ones.
I really enjoyed this class with Dr. Shoemaker. Her lectures are good and the workload is not too bad at all. If you are a good writer then you will be totally fine. Recommend taking her.
