She is a great professor, but the tests are long essays.Shes honor level.

Good lectures, she explains clearly. Tough and expets alot from her students. Overall nice lady.
She is a great lecturer. She is high energy and very educated. She is favorable toward men and NOT FAVORABLE toward women, be careful girls.
She thinks she’s British and believes colonialism was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
she is tough but you can learn a lot. you have only 90 minutes to write your essay test. whole semester has just only 4 long essay exams...
A good teacher and gives interesting lectures. While writing essay exams were tough and stressful, they prepared me more for transferring and also provided me a better learning experience than scantron tests have.
ALL essays, tough class but great lectures. grading scale is kinda tipped for the benefit of the students. Makes history very interesting
Full-contact history. Professor Smith is an experience at OCC that you should have. Essay exams are manageable.
She can be ridiculously silly and marvelously witty in one breath when lecturing. Not afraid to make fun of herself. Essays will be the focus of your grade.
She thinks she is from the uk. Tough teacher.
Horrible experience even if I had an A. Three essays of three pages each and 10 vocabulary words in an hour...sorry but we are not robots. She has her favorites(mainly guys). I do not remember a single thing about her lectures...
One of the greatest experience at OCC. American history became so lively through her narrative!
very hard teacher, but outstanding! very enjoyable lectures. gives 4 essay tests (each with 3 essays & 10 vocab words) and drops the lowest one. Yes it is "hard" to do 3 essays in 1 hr, but she lets u do practice essays before each test and grad
An awesome teacher. One of the best I have ever had. I learned more history in her class than I thought I would ever learn. Likes movies in class.
Very good lectures, keeps you somewhat awake. All writing class though. Quizes, and Exams are essays. But she gives you the questions beforehand, Exams are 2, 3 page essays, take home. Quizes: 1 hour in class, 2 essays, 10 vocab. Good class, I liked it
do the work and she is hilarious
She is very funny and interesting. She knows her stuff and will probably make a good historian. Her test are the hardest, because of the timing during the test. However if you are not ready to commit fully to this class, don't take it bcuz you will fail.
cute and interesting lectures but lacks depth. teaches very whitewashed and limited version of history. has misogynist streak. boring and irrelevent videos shown during each class.
ugh. i made the mistake of taking two of her classes at the same time and i'm dropping them both. her class is interesting but the way she grades is bs
Prof. Smith is by far the best teacher at OCC. I took one class with her in the Fall of 2003, and now am taking two more classes this Spring. Yes, there are time constraints during the tests, but it's nothing one can't handle. Lectures are great too.
SUCH A FUN CLASS. I had a blast. She is sooo entertaining, funny, nice. I have never learned so much in college than i did in her class. She TELLS YOU WHAT TO STUDY BEFORE THE TEST. If you don't get an A, you are an idiot. Do what she says and get an A!
Smith is amazing! Humorous, educated, open-minded, office hours rock. The tests aren't bad at all, actually theyre kind of a joke when you get to upper division. If you can't write 3 short essays in 1.5 hrs, you shouldn't be in college anyway. Best Prof!
smith is simply one of the top 3 teachers at occ. you cant pass up a chance to take her. but she is no easy A.
gives the best lectures in class, most animated, and one of the best professors at OCC. she gave me a different perspective in history. enjoyed her class
KEEP UP WITH HER HANDOUTS AND AS SOON AS SHE GIVES YOU THE EXAM QUESTIONS START WORKING ON THEM ASAP. SHE PRARTICALLY GIVES YOU AN "A" JUST TAKE IT AND DONT BE LAZY! SHE REALLY FORCES YOU TO LOVE HISTORY! I DID! I ACTUALLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT WAS G

If you ever have the oppurtunity to take this class do it! History of Britain, Susan's an Anglophile and brings more passion than any other professor at OCC. I took it 3 years ago and I don't think it's been offered since, but keep an eye out.
All I can say is don't take her Summer class. I hear mixed comments about her in the Fall & Spring. I'm in her Summer class now and it's a nightmare. She is passionate, I'll give her that, but she is rushing through the material and overloading us. Sh
She felt if necessary to explain simple things, such as the way the Christian calendar works, and then managed to get it wrong. She thought that millenia begin with years ending in 0, and was to dense or proud to be corrected. I dropped on the 1st day.
ALL WRITING. PAGES AND PAGES OF WRITING.
WONDERFUL LECTURES! INSPIRING TEACHER. SHE GIVES YOU THE ESSAY QUESTIONS BEOFRE THE TEST! ONLY LAZY/SLACKER STUDENTS DON'T LIKE HER. Tip:take notes her "key-phrases" that she uses in her lectures, she'll make it apparent.
Very condescending and arrogant. It was clear on the first day that she thinks she is God's gift to community colleges. When a teacher starts off assuming those in class shouldn't be there or are cheaters, it doesn't bode well for an enjoyable semester.
DUDLEY the GREAT Dane is sooo cute! We love Dudley! oooh and Professor Smith is good too!
If every teacher would have the passion and the ability to teach like Prof. Smith does I would never want to leave school. Plus Dudley rocks.
Probably one of the best history teachers I've had. You have to work hard for an A, lots of studying, but worth it. She's vibrant and passionate in the classroom, a really great teacher. I learned a lot.
Professor Smith was the single greatest professor I ever had! I later became a U.S. History teacher. Wihout realizing it, I had modeled my teaching. My master teacher said "You teach so much like Susan Smith" It was the greatest compliment of my life! and so strange that we both knew her!
She is a great teacher. You should take this class. look over the study guide she gives you and you will get an A. Her lectures are fun and she is easy to listen to and remember the material.
Very nice teacher, liked her lectures, and her sense of humor. All the work in the class are just essays, a lot of essays!!!!! If you like doing essays than this is the class for you. No other homework, tests are of course essays with a few terms.
Professor Smith is wonderful, passionate, and extremely knowledgeable; very pleasant and kind, and one of the best teachers Ive had. If you sleep you'll fail; if you don't you'll do really well. Simple--I hate history and I got an A+. Not rocket science, I breezed thru it!
Great teacher, very smart, definitely recommend!
the tightest teacher ever. makes the class interesting, and knows what she is talkin about. just study the packets and the vocab and you'll do good on the test. you dont have to buy the book its a waiste of money, trust me. Overall she is a really cool teacher.
She is the best!!! She is just so smart... I love her classes~
smith is awsome. short and simple. it is people like her that keep me coming to school. she is so passionate about teaching and really loves the students. she is selfless and nice, smart, witty and funny. dont buy the book, wast of mony. study vocab and paketts, guarenteed easy A.
She is one of the best professors u'll ever have. I reccomend her to everyone i know. I learned so much thats useful for later in a UC school.
She never expressed what she wanted on the tests. Weekly exams where if you didn't have what she wanted, you would get a bad grade. The problem is, you never knew what she wanted! The only person in the entire class who was passing it would write out her essays beforehand and memorize them. INSANE!!
This is what a professor looks like. For those of you planning on eventually transferring to a university: Y'all betta recognize!
I didn't like her lectures at all. I got an A in the class but I was never able to ask her anything. She was always stressed when I came to her with a questions and send me away. She says she is fair and open but she talks bad about Europeans and she only shows films toward the end of the semester.
she is a very good teacher, her classes are fun to attend. Tests are in class essays. She gives the topics beforehand so you can prepare.
She completely screwed me over when it came to my grade.I deserved an A, but I came out with a B.Maybe if she knew how to use the internet her students could actually get in contact with her.It took 3 weeks to get a response. But, I have to say other than being cold hearted her lectures are informing
she is prepared to make you laugh at least once in each class. never boring. she lets you visualize history.
Prof. Smith is amazing. She is strict, but she is fair and entertaining. History of England is obviously her passion and she's very good at it. In my class alone, more than half were returning students, they come back again and again because she's so good at it. Prepares you for a 4 year university.
Very sketchy. She has a clear, outlined syllabus but she, personally, has a bunch of weird personality traits. Has a very annoying dog she brings to class, no sense of humor, and is a pretty boring lecturer. LOTS 'o work in class, difficult tests....arghhhh.....
If you don't like most classes because you feel you're smarter than your teacher I suggest her. She admires the arrogant but is really a softie, albeit she is stressed often and you need to know when to approach her. Her lectures are scintilating though no doubt prescripted (as are most). Somewhat difficult if your a multiple choice fan.
One of the few true masters of education. Has a sharp, quirky sense of humor and a knack for story-telling. If you want multiple choice and date memorization, go elsewhere - but if you want to experience the depth and richness of the cultures and civilizations of human history, you belong with Professor Smith.
I had her for 4 semesters and I consider myself very lucky. She is the most knowledgeable professor, her lectures are easy to understand and funny. After you had her writing essays will be a piece of cake. She seems harsh at the beginning and a bit arrogant but once you get to know her she is a wonderful person. If you want to learn you will adore
Have you ever seen an old lady crawl under a desk with her dog? Or act really wierd and crazy cause thats whats this crazy lady does. Shes really easy, her test are basically on vocab, but theres essay that could be on anything. Theres a lot of notes but if you go to her office hours and ask her about the test shell tell you.
Wonderful class
How could anyone honestly say that her tests are difficult? She tells you EXACTLY what you should expect on her exams. The catch is that you have to study the vocab in her study guides and prepare for the essays prior to the test by reading the book. Hm, studying for an exam. Quite the concept. I REALLY enjoyed this class.

great teacher. but getting a hold of her is impossible!

This women changed my life over the summer, she is a very demanding teacher and wants everyone to do there best. She tells it like it is and isn't affraid to say something that might offend someone. I am taking all my history with her. Get ready for vocabulary. If you read and participate you should have no problem getting an A
extremely uptight and rude!!!!!!
She was the best history teacher that I have ever had. All tests are in class essays, but you will learn so much.
Very good teacher. Exams are difficult in the honors class, but it truly helps to improve writing in-class essays. Really prepares students well for university level work.
Complete *itch! But she made Western Civ very interesting. I actually passed with an A. I would not take another class taught by her, but she is good at what she does. Dudley her dog is an added plus to taking this course.
The best Jr. College teacher(and ACTUAL Professor)I've had. Turned me on from an undecided major to becoming a history major, about to graduate from CSULB to teach high school history.I came to this site just to rank her. Here's the tip: write all of your test essays out, make an outline of them, and memorize it. I received 3 FUZZY BUNNIES!
she thinks shes so funny but she's not. Her lectures don't give all the information for the test and the book sucks. Basically she is the****tiest teacher that will walk the earth and she's mean!!!
demands you memorize everything. You take tests using a blue book. She would mark me off for not having a vocab word exactly memorized.
The best professor I've ever had. Lectures are super informative, extremely enjoyable & entertaining. I'd take this same class over & over again just to learn more! Don't miss class, take notes, memorize vocab = tests aren't that bad at all. She makes history exciting and fun!! GREAT professor!!
Great teacher, really knows here stuff and actually makes class interesting. never a dull moment with her. she lays it all out for you and gives you test questions the week before the tests. just study the packets and vocab and you will be fine. you will learn a ton whether you want to or not.
She is the worst history teacher i've ever had, and im a history major.Ive always gotten A's in all of my history classes and this dyke tried to fail me because i would not repeat her every word verbatum on her super hard tests. she failed half of my class before the midterm. just dont do it!
She's been teaching the same classes for like 100 years! She knows this stuff so well. You have to be willing to work, but she's a great teacher. She gives you the questions ahead of time. Advice: WRITE PRACTICE ESSAYS! You really don't need to waste your money on the book. Oh and don't be alarmed by Duddly the BIG BLACK GREAT DANE!
i am trying to save you people. this woman made me cry yesterday. and im the type of girl that never cries. she said that i needed to get atleast a B on one of her tests. and i knew all the answers to the test, but she wouldnt let me finish the test. apparently i ran out of time.so now i know she is evil and wants students to fail.!!dont take her!!
take the class if you're prepared to repeat every word she says on tests, otherwise she's unhelpful and seems to hate her students.. very unfair teacher.. won't give you the time of day.. she gets really boring pretty quick and lectures you as if you were a special-ed kid DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
Don't mind the whiners' comments below. She tells you exactly what you need, and what to study; she's very clear of what her class is all about. PRACTICE ESSAYS = A+. No joke. She's not a breeze, but if you do the work you're completely fine. she's an awesome teacher...
to all the people that have recently complained about her, you need to grow up she told you what to expect, what and how to study. she gave you 45 min to write everything down; this is college and she treats the class like a college course. ive taken her for three semisters (hist 180,185,195) shes a great teacher and i loved her class will miss her
Expects alot from her honors class and grades as such. Gives three written essays during the semester, of which you may drop one as long as you complete the four film papers. She grades harder on the film papers than she does the exams, but very worth doing because you wont have to take the final. Requires some writing and memorization skills.
if you can't pass this class it's because you fell asleep. smith is the best professor i have ever had, and i would take every class she teaches if i had the chance. she grades hard, but gives you all the answers, you have nothing to complain about. take her if you want to learn something, it will be the best thing you could ever do as a student.
This teacher is very arrogant and careless of the students. She isn't super tough, but her personality is obnoxious. Overall, the class isn't too bad. Just sort of boring and annoying, but not very hard to get a decent grade.
AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be fair to professor Smith: she is very knowledgable and her lectures are engaging at times. What i didn't like was the way she behaves towards her students--as she has made it her personal responsibity to weed out the bad ones from the good ones. She does not want 100% of her students to succeed, and thats why I would not recommend her.
She seems kind of rough at first but is actually a really cool teacher. Some lectures are boring, but it's history, so it is what it is. YOu get to watch decent movies, but have to write papers afterwards. Overall it's a recommended class.
Highly recommended class and definetely easy to pass if you put some effort into it. Smith will tell you the essays questions and vocabulary that are going to be on the exam; therfore just pre-write them and make sure you can write them down quickly during the exam.
She is a fun teacher who knows what to expect from each student.
Great teacher, a tad tough, but its not like shes a terrible teacher. She gives you the essay questions and vocab in advance. So you know exactly what to expect.
She is pure evil, even offensive. Don't ask her a question because she won't answer it! If you can write well and memorize, you will do fine on the timed essay exams. Very possible to get an A. Another plus-you get to watch great movies!
shes a very smart person and she knows it. and she'll make sure you do too. theres 3 tests and 10 pts extra credit for buying your book on time. i got an 89.666667 and she would NOT round me up. what a ****.
If you're not an honors student, she will weed you out. Otherwise, this class is very easy. Its true she is mean to the students that don't belong there, but once they're all gone she becomes quite nice. If you can write well and have a good memory this class will be a breeze. Do the practice essays though.
If you expect to transfer to a 4 year, Professor Smith is the women to take. Her classes are interesting, challenging and you will actually learn, I know what a concept. I have taken her 175H and 180H class, most of her students are returning. Amazing women and teacher, the best OCC has to offer.
Professor Smith is my favorite professor I've ever had...! Definately take any classes she is teaching!
Amazin teacher favorite on campus. I've taken all her courses and loved them wish there was more. If you do the practice essays its a beeze If not your screwed. Almost every student who has her the first time takes all her classes just that good!!
Do yourself a favor and DON'T TAKE HER. History is a good class to take but not with her. Exams are all essay, you get to watch some good flicks but you have to write papers on all of them. She is rude and always compares her class to how great her honors class is.
If you want to prepare yourself for the riggers of a 4-year university, take a class from Smith and learn how to study properly and write clear, concise arguments in essay type tests. Hard work, but you'll become a better student of history.
Nastiest woman ive ever met. she will fail you without the slightest bit of guilt for ruinging your life. even if you are a history buff/major, i suggest finding a different teacher. she'll make you cry. tests are hard because she changes the answers.
I really liked this class. it's not easy at all, though. the honors exams consist of 3 three-page essays and about ten vocab words to define in under 90 minutes. She's a cool teacher and she really makes it interesting. this is definitely the class to take if youre interested in western civ. Also, she has a thing about hats. Don't wear one.
I took her classes for the honors prog. and ended transfering to a university with a major in history. all i can say is that i had GREAT memories being in her class and she prepared me well for the UC-level work. if you can't handle her tests, theres not way you can survive
Smith is arrogant and un-approachable. She plays favorites, which is de-motivating to the others. She's not easy to talk to. All this being said, her classes were interesting. Her tests are hard, but I got an A in the class by studying.
i loved being in her class she is easy to under stand and teaches you how to write. good professor
Professor Smith is truly amazing. I hated every history class I ever took but now I love it. I have no idea what people are talking about with the intimidation factor, in my opinion she's a sweet old lady. Do the practice essays, visit her during office hours just to chat, don't wear a hat, and realistically, you have to be smart or you'll fail.
Prof. Smith chose her favorites and basically disregarded everyone else in the class. Her practice essays and tests were a joke. Don't take this class.
She is wonderful! I took her for the summer. I dropped because.. I couln't stand a 5pm-10pm class. Her class isn't easy. You have to have some interest of Hist to be able to handle the class. I'm taking her for spring semester.. I already have the book.. might as well!

THis was the best teacher i ever had! She is very clear, she prints the notes for you, any monkey can follow along. The book is used but main basis for tests is lecture. You learn so much about history and your writing abilities. Has high expectations but in no way chooses favorites, if u say this u obviously don't go to class!Funny, always helpful
If you find the time and motivation to do the practice essays, you will get an easy A. Each exam is three 3 page essays in 90 minutes, but all of the prompts are given ahead of time and she will grade practice essays on time for you. She is old fashioned (strict and doesn't believe in scantrons) but tells amazing stories and makes everyone laugh!
90% of this class is VERY easy - the other 10% not so much. Three timed , written essays that require her particular style in-order to recieve a favorable grade. Do the practice essays at the very least to show her you care about your grade & she'll play favorites. Lectures just as much as she shows movies in class. Good smart professor.
good teacher...difficult class but def. manageable if u study and memorize. nice lady
Teacher simply demands verbatim answers from her lectures and study guides. Vocabulary in a history class is ridiculous. BORING LECTURES!!! She plays HEAVY favorites especially to students she has previously had. Overall BAD experience, avoid unless extremely interested in the subject or willing to outline and memorize A LOT.
There's a lot of verbatim memorization, which is kind of stupid. But she GIVES you the test answers and all you have to do is memorize them. Pretty easy class, watch lots of videos (yay!), and she drops one of your test grades. Final also is not cumulative, thank God. Pretty interesting class, would recommend to others. :]
I have taken 3 classes with her and plan to take more if she has any non-honors class next fall. Essay tests need to be studied for, and vocab is almost half of your grade. She has either dropped the lowest test grade or had work to make up a test grade in every class I've had her for. There is no reason to fail unless you don't ask for help.
Show up to class and look over her handouts and you will pass. She wants her vocabulary word for word so keep that in mind when taking tests. she's funny and always let you out of class early. Plus her dog is awesome
Excellent, dedicated teacher. Has an interesting presentation style, is kind and approachable, and seems to strive to make the material as fun and unambiguous as possible.
I had her for 170H, 180H and 195. She was a very inspiring teacher who had a heavy influence on my decision to major in history. She's brilliant and witty and such a wonderful teacher. I really enjoyed going to lectures. Although the honors classes were difficult (with a lot of writing) it was worth it and prepared me to transfer!
I thought she was scary and don't argue with her. She tells you exatcly what will be on the tests; selected terms, and essay promps. make sure you word everything exactly how she says it or you will get marked down. I didn't really use the book, and she hands out notes for every lecture.
Like everyone else mentioned, previous students are heavily favored. 3/4 tests graded, 10 points extra credit for buying the book on time. Do the practice essays, and you'll receive an easy A (and be heavily favored). To the students she cares about, she's extremely nice and helpful. To those she couldn't care less about, she is arrogant towards.
DO NOT TAKE HER!! I love history, but I wish I had never taken this crazy lady. Shes thinks she is better then everyone and is rude to everyone even the course assistant!! She expects you to regurgitate exactly what she says on the tests. 30 people failed the first test. Im an A student and I had to work my butt of to get by.
Every Exam is 9 pages (big blue book) and 10 vocab words.. if you're looking for automatic/easy A.. this is not the class to take.. but if you wanna learn, Prof Smith is a wonderful teacher. she's witty (can be a bit arrogant tho) and passionate about what she teaches. Do the readings and practice essays and you should be fine..
Wonderful professor who's passionate about history. I'm a math major who hates history but took three classes with her (175H,180H, 185H). She is amazing and genuine, made classes interesting, and history not so painful. Definitely one of OCC's best if you're up for the challenge.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Smith is passionate about history and makes the lectures very entertaining, all his tests are strictly 3-page essay per question and 10 vocab words. Her handouts are gold, READ THE BOOK and do the prewriting, if you wan an "A" you have to work. But still an overall good class.
This teacher treated me very poor. I left her class crying after she told me that I should drop out because I didnt pass 2 tests in from of the whole class. she through my test in the trash and i had to get it out. I know some people like her. but i think she is miserable and it was by far the worst experience I have had in college
If your a history major, you need to take this class. She is one of the best professors at OCC. Beware: If you can't keep up with the homework and "UC level" blue-book exams then you will have trouble passing her class.
This teacher is horrible! If you don't kiss her butt constantly she'll drop you like a fly. Exams would be easier if she gave you longer than 50 minutes to write 4 essays and complete the vocabulary
If you aren't a good looking guy, you will be treated like dirt in this class.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!! SHE IS SOOO FULL OF HERSELF AND SHE THINKS SHE WALKS ON WATER. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
worst teacher ever. completely nuts
I took this class in hopes to be challenged academically, but my study skills were challenged b/c it was hard to complete the boring essays and study for tests where grammar counts more. Yes, when she lectures she's not monotone, but watching fictional movies in no way helps someone learn about history accurately. And her history was inaccurate
her class was a complete waste of time. I took this class because I heard she was a great teacher, I was misinformed. She believes she is very knowlegable and will fight till the death to prove that she is right, even when she is not. I highly recommend another teacher for this class.
I seriously don't understand all of the negative comments. I'm a huge history buff, and if you should take history with anyone... it would be Professor Smith. I took her for 180 & 185. Her class is soo easy. She hand feeds you all of the answers and all you have to do is memorize them. I got an A in both classes and was exempt from both finals.
Great Teacher and Lectures! Exams are 3 essay questions and Vocab. She gives you the essay questions and vocab words two weeks before so you know exactly what will be on the test and you can prepare accordingly. If anyone does bad in her class, it is because they are lazy. Great movies and fun lectures!
If you want an easy A, hate writing, and are generally looking for the least amount of work possible then: 1) don't take her 2)Don't bother with college 3)reassess your life If you want to transfer to a U.C., improve your writing and are a history major then you must take this Professor.
Professor Smith is a great person and wonderful teacher. I do not normally like history, but she kept her lectures interesting. It is important to go to her class, so you get all of her handouts and notes. The only papers we wrote were on movies. Know the vocabulary for her essay exams.
She's great. Very easy Honors level class, write practice essays, and attend every class and you'll do fine. Know how to write essays, and like to write essays! Each exam is 10 pages in blue book, with 3 3page essays and a page of vocab. Take everything she says with a grain of salt, but after you get past her political leanings, shes wonderful.
Her class is real easy. She gives you the test questions in advance so you need to know what your going to write beforehand because the test are timed. She keeps the class intresting with her lectures and movies are allright.
Good teacher who knows what shes talking about. Don't be frightened by her attitude the first two classes, shes just being angry to try and get people to drop and get the class size down, past the first week shes an awesome teacher. dont take this class if you are 1)a bad writer, all her tests are essays and 2)afraid of Dogs, she has a great dane
Man I cannot stand this teacher! At first I liked her for her eccentricities, but now I'm realizing she is only a bitter and pessimistic person. She seems to hate teaching at a community college level because of "dumb" students, which is really condescending. She is pompous and makes herself to be a great professor, which she's not!
If you want an A, simply regurgitate her words verbatim. This is no way to learn, and everyone who thinks she's a great teacher, you need to learn to think for yourself.
Prof Smith is one of the most bitter, condescending, pompous teachers I have ever had. She literally said in class "all of you who didn't pass the first exam are lazy and stupid and I want nothing to do with you." Ridiculous.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ENJOY HISTORY!! I'm currently taking the second half of western civ. because I enjoyed the first half so much. However, all she teaches are her religious views. Opinions are meant for poli sci and philosophy classes. NOT history. If I had none she wouldn't actually be teaching history I would not have taken her.
she's passionate about her subject but she totally plays favorites...I felt like I was back in elementary school. She also is very short with you whenever you ask a question. Before, during r after class. Did not enjoy her class at all
Professor smith is a darling woman. She is very passionate on the subject that she teaches which is refreshing. she cares about the world and simply tries to inform her students. she is opinionated but unless you are just obnoxious and have to have your views heard in the classroom, than it shouldnt get to you. the tests were straight from her lect
I respect Professor Smith because she knows so much and is very passionate about the subject. But I also found her to be quite intimidating and pretentious.
Professor Smith is one of the best professors I've ever had. She is passionate about the subject, and her lectures are interesting and informative. This is an honors course. Be prepared to study because the tests are extremely difficult. Those people who don't like her simply aren't willing to work hard for a good grade. Be prepared to study.
Her tests are not that hard! its 3 essay questions, she gives you the topics at least 3 weeks b4 the test and lets you write rough draft and proof reads and corrects it for you. She tries to look tough but she is not really.. Fun lady, sometimes seem mean toward minority groups, but she doesn't seem to mean any harm by it.
Don't bother taking this class unless you are prepared to dedicate yourself to the curriculum. You cannot skate by in this class. All of the grading is discretionary, so you don't want to be on her bad side. 4 tests, each are 9 pages of written essays with 10 definitions. You get 88 minutes per test. You need to know your stuff to even finish.

difficult class, but lectures go by outline. tough grader on writing assignments but you learn a TON in the class, as she has a lot of first hand experience. I loved the class even though I didn't to too well.
She told us when the economy went to hell that we should change our majors since most will be useless and that in a few years people will be freezing to death because "the world as we know it is over." Her class isnt super hard, but she has a horrible/all knowing attitude. She is not friendly to students, and even screws up taking down grades.
angry old lady who thinks shes better than all..oh ya if you dont agree with her politically she will grade you lower. she also makes **** comments
Only incentive to attend lecture is to record her BIZARRE vocab. When she's not imposing her political beliefs, she's bragging about her $. Exams are 90% essay, 10% vocab & 100% SUBJECTIVE, so make sure you repeat "her" information VERBATIM. I expect an A in the class, but I find Smith to be pompous, unapproachable, and unhelpful. Good luck!
Her tests are impossible. 3 tests + final & she'll drop your lowest score. She gives you vocab and essay prompts way ahead of time so you can try to prepare, but I don't think anyone ever showed up on test day feeling the least bit confident they would even finish. You have 50 mins for 4 five paragraph essays + vocab. Memorize everything or fail
Professor Smith completes me. And I gave her that chili pepper btw.
I found her class VERY interesting. She has a wonderful way of making history fascinating. However,on a personal note, she was intimidating and insensitive. Not someone I would want to be close to.
Susan Smith is one of the worst instructors I have had at the collegiate level. Her class is based on mindless memorization, and much of class is spent listening to her vent about her own political and religious beliefs. You must mindlessly regurgitate her narrow views back to her (verbatim) in order to succeed. Class discussion is nonexistent.
I took her for honors She is a wonderful teacher. If you an easy A, well you won't get one. I think only one person in my whole class got an A. If you want to do well, ask her about practice essays on the first day of class! Do all the practice essays and even redo them and you will do great on her tests :). No extra credit.
Do the practice essays, memorize the vocab, and write decent essays = A. I loved listening to her lectures and found them quite comical. If youre liberal than youll probably cry and become insulted by her conservative viewpoint..get over it. Take this class
Nearly dropped because the class seemed scary at first. For an A, just write practice essays, incorporate her corrections and memorize them. Only 3 tests and can skip one if you do well. Has a few weird views. It's like she's talking to herself and doesn't need the students there. Has a dog the size of a horse you're not allowed to pet or talk to.
I really do not like history much, but her love for history makes the lecture time pass by quickly. This is a college level course and not easy, but if you study A's are posible. I wish I had more required History just to take another one of her classes. She is retiring after this year. Do not miss out on one of the best history teachers on campus.
i took 175H and 185H and as long as you do the practice essays before the exams and take her notes into consideration you'll be fine. make sure you memorize the essays you have to write because the exams are 3 3-page essays with 3 papers that are written on movies, and if you write all the papers you don't have to take the final. I got an A's
Pre-writing your essays for the tests is a MUST. Be extremely detailed when studying. Practice essays are very beneficial. If you take this class, try to start a study group and exchange essays before the test so you can share ideas for the essays. on avg. 3 essays/test + vocab words. good luck.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Professor Smith was an amazing Professor. She ran her course well and made sure that the students did their part as well. She taught us that is her job to present the information but ours to take it and use it. She is truly the best History Professor to take. You'll learn a lot from her.
Professor Smith is very intimidating. Actually she's just plain scary and she could probably make me wet my pants. But despite that, she will definitely prepare you for a university and for that I love her. But she makes me wonder if university professors are that scary... I sure hope not!
Mrs. Smith is the most self centered controlling teacher you have ever met. Besides her over confidence and DGAF attitude, she wants everyone and all to study and learn the way she did, sorry sweetheart that does'nt work for everyone. instead of being helpful and sweet she puts on the bad guy image & tries to intimidate you. be aware. dont fall for
Professor Smith is a extremly smart Woman. Yes I agree that she can be intimidating however she just wants to really have her students succeed. I spent a short time with her during her office hours and she helped me in not just in History but advise for my future with transfering to a University. Just be prepared to study when you take the class!
Very interesting, and funny woman. Explains her expectations as well as what you need to pass her class. Recommend taking, but prepared to work!
I absolutely love professor smith and toby! she makes her expectations clear at the beginning of the semester.4 test she drops the lowest grade. all have 10 vocab words and 3 test have 3 essays. shes super funny and is extremely helpful when you go to her office hours. By far best history teacher ive had at occ. she has so much passion for hist.
AMAZING PROFESSOR....VERY FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING.....I'LL ADMIT THAT I WAS AFRAID OF HER IN THE BEGINNING BUT NOW I LOVE HER. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT!!!!! I RECOMMEND
She is one of the smartest women I've ever met! She makes history so much fun! It's a bit challenging because there's only 2 exams (essay format)and three papers. If you do well on that, you dont need to take the final. It's FUN, EASY, and YOU LEARN a lot!
ABSOLUTELY AMMMMMMAAAAAAZZZZIIIINNNNGGGG! SHE'S IS SUPER NICE, SUPER SWEET AND REALLY WANTS HER STUDENTS TO SUCCEED. SHE WILL CHALLENGE EVERYONE TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY REAH THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL. YOU WANT TO LEARN A LOT AND GET A GOOD GRADE? TAKE SMITH AND TOBEY (HER DOG)
Take her, nuf said
I love Professor Smith. She WILL intimidate you the first day, this is intentional. If you stick with her, I promise you will not regret it. In fact it's likely that she'll be one of your favorite teachers ever. I'm in my third class with her and I look forward to everyday in her class.
I liked her alot at first but she doesnt believe that students can be intelligent or write well. Every year some students will be accused of plagiarism. Not incredibly hard but will cause stress just because she is so intimidating. She plays favorites, especially if youre a boy. Learn to dumb down your writing and repeat her word. Love the dog tho.
Professor Smith is the best teacher i have ever taken at OCC. If you do not take a course with her you truly are missing out. Her lectures are crystal clear and she gives handouts that follow them in exact order. She truly loves what she does and it shows. I would highly recommend taking her, if you follow instructions you should pass the class:).
i had to drop this class unfortunatley due to a busy life schedule but Proffessor Smith is the most amazing teacher at OCC. She is the honors program at OCC. She wants to help you succeed as a student & do your best. to anyone who has complaints about her, you are a slacker. she gives everyone a fair chance & is wonderful. will def her again!! :)
Professor Smith (make sure you call her Professor!) is an excellent teacher. She scared the crap out of me the first few classes, but she is now one of my all-time favorites. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about history and really teaches it in a way that is very interesting. Take time to study for the tests and you will do fine!
Professor Smith is old, and it explains a lot of the things that we don't like about her. She's strict, but completely fair. She's discouraging, but encouraging if approached. She wants you to work hard for your grade- but she gives you the tools to do it well. Worth taking for the experience- her dog is a plus! She knows what she wants, for sure.
Great professor, truly has a passion for history and tries to instill a similar passion in all her students. She will always be the great Bard.
What a lovely lady and spectacular teacher! Taking her class is like being handed the tools to success, and if you fail to take advantage of them you're a loser, because "in life, there are only winners and losers." She teaches with immense passion, authority, and interest. Smith's one of the most rare and authentic talents I have ever encountered.
Great teacher! Extremely passionate about History... You MUST take advantage of the practice essays! I wish I could take her course over again.
I have taken Susan smith for 4, unforgettable, history courses. Her lectures are masterfully crafted.lectures are tied with world events, humor, and wonderful anecdotal insight, but the gravity of the content is never lost. The most memorable lecture is that of the treaty of versaille. The type that attends class to pass a test:sit this one out.
Best western civilization class on campus
Absolutely amazing teacher. Period. All teachers should be as in love with teaching as Susan is. She is of the highest quality. Always had a great time in her class and her dog Jasper is absolutely beautiful! Looking forward to taking another class with her asap.
She is willing to help all her students if they are willing to put in the work for her class she is really engaging in discussion and is in love with what she does. she takes her honors classes out to dinner at the end of the semester. She really is a great teacher. Love Her
I took her classes about 20 years ago (first took British History, then Western Civ.) She didn't make it simple. No multiple choice, just essays for her exams, but she was eager to help, a great lecturer and had a great sense of humor. I loved the pixie costume she showed up in one day! She probably doesn't do that anymore. Still my favorite prof.
Professor Smith is an absolutely incredible teacher. She loves what she does and she loves teaching. Her class is designed to prepare you for universities that require essay formatted exams. This is my fourth semester taking her class because she is simply, THE BEST teacher at OCC hands down. Def take her class, she is an OUTSTANDING TEACHER!
The best teacher ever. Most kind and helpful. The best teacher ive ever had in my life..
If you get into her honors courses, HAVE FUN! Because she will make sure the slackers are out by the end of the first week :). love prof. smith so much, i had such an awesome time being her student, the only problem was the killer exams. 3 essays, 3 pages for each essay, and you've got to memorize them because you're gonna be writing in-class.
professor smith is HANDS DOWN the best teacher at OCC. She is willing to help you pass the class, and if you put enough effort get an A. She takes the time to go over your practice essay for the exam and gives you test questions before the test. Her lectures are crystal clear, she is an extraordinary teacher, TAKE HER TAKE HER TAKE HER!! :)
Tough class. Read your textbook to supplement in class info. Make flash cards, study her notes, and you will do well. Always willing to help students after class and in office hours. She does have a bit of an ego and is a bit intimidating. She's a good teacher, but not as good as she may thinks she is (and will tell you so).
Professor Smith, is an amazing professor. She not only teaches the subject matter well but makes it interesting. She always talks about events in history as though she was there and it provides such interesting insight. In addition, she reinforces the ideals of hard work and discipline. Her class is not easy, but taking the class is so worth it.
Professor Smith is the best teacher on campus. I had her for several courses about five years ago. Trust me: if you learn how to get As in her class, you can get As in any class, at OCC and beyond. There's really nothing more to say.
She can teach and her class is quite interesting. You will learn a lot about her class. The MAJOR downside is how she grades your exam. If you can't spell or write essay FAST, your efforts will be wasted. 4 full essay (1 page each) and vocab in ONE HOUR for each exam. What a shame, great teacher but the work makes it very hard.
I took this class in the summer and basically it's based on 3 exams with a total of 69 points. However each exam is 25 points and she will give 5 extra point if you have a textbook, do not buy the book yet!!!! talk to her first cause the book is +$100. There will be one essay that will replace any failing exam. DON'T DARE TO CHEAT!!
Took the summer class and got an A. Passionate teacher. 3 exams and 1 optional paper. If you do well on the first 2 exams and on the paper and like your grade, then you won't need to take the final. Rarely used the textbook. Memorize all the vocab and practice writing the essays beforehand.
She is interesting and brilliant, but this class has a huge workload. You get packets for every chapter. Tests were different: you write practice essays days before the test and she hands them back evaluated. You then memorize that and then recreate it on the test.Do that for 2 tests and then do the 3 movie papers, you're exempt from the final.
The best teacher on OCC campus, but not the easiest. You will learn in this class and she is more than willing to help you get through her tests. Tests are in blue books and essay formats, but the questions are given before the material is covered. She makes history come alive and loves what she does. Take her, you won't regret it. Practice essays!!
Best class I've ever taken!
very fun class to be in! she really helps you out and prepares you for exams well
Loved her as a professor! She is very informative and makes history extremely interesting because she is so passionate. I took her honors course and it does require a lot of work to prepare for written exams, but it is possible to get a good grade as long as you put the time and effort in.
Only likes the students who are the smartest. So if you don't do good on her tests, she won't even bother being nice, but instead tell you to drop and do something else with your life because you aren't fit enough for her class. Tests are 4 pages of memorized written essays& vocab must be word for word. You WORK for your grade!HARD
She gives you the questions that will be on the exams (2 exams and a final). The key is to write your answers and vocabulary beforehand and get her to look them over and then memorize them -- easy 100%. Textbook is not used in the class but needed b/c she gives you 5pts for having a textbook. Her class lectures are interesting.
One thing I liked about Professor Smith was that she gave you the prompts to the essay exams in advance: She wanted you to KNOW what you'd be writing about, not to THINK about it and waste time on the test. Her class was very entertaining although I was always intimidated every time I walked in her class since she is very intelligent. Take her.
I would not recommend this class. I am dyslectic I am able to do the work I just need a little more time writing papers. Susan Smith did not want to give me the extra time that was needed. I felt she thought I was too much trouble. She told drop her class. Not a nice lady
Best Prof At OCC altough I think she is retired now I took 4 history classes with her got an A+ in all 4 (all honors)
