Susan is a wonderful person who really cares about her Biology students. I really enjoyed this class because of her, and I wish she taught more of my classes!
Love Susan! She's an awesome instructor who cares, I learned so much about Biology. She does have 11 quizzes and 5 exams so be ready. Can't wait to take her for A&P!
Susan made me work really hard for my grade but I have to admit I learned a whole lot in her class. It was awesome of her to let us do group work because it really saved me! Her exams were hard as well as her quizzes, I got an A in the class and I am no Einstein, I just studied hard and used her website she made with links to help us!
I take this class online and she's always mess up on quizzes and exams. I don't think she can do math well. I mean my grade isn't what I expect. I think she isn't good at online class work because she always make lots of mistakes.
Susan is an ok teacher, she does reply to emails pretty quick.. She doesn't do office hours.. Don't ask for extra credit because you won't get it.. She makes it very clear... I wouldn't take her again... She's not the type of teacher that wants you to succeed.. You pretty much get it or you don't.. Be ready to work!
Not helpful at all. Didn't offer up supplemental material other than Mastering and lectures by a different professor. Half of her tests are TF questions where the sentences are constructed poorly. No test feedback so you'll never know what you missed. I barely managed a C and worked twice as hard as any other class I've taken.
This class was extremely difficult. Susan emails you back quickly and is able to answer any questions you have. The issues I had with the class were the confusing study guide discussions online and the directions for them changed a lot. The tests were extremely difficult and hard to pass even though you may have studied religiously.
Miss Susan, was a great professor. You actually have to work for your grade, which is important for people going into the Medical field. I'd take her course's again if she teaches the higher level bio's or A&P's.
Susan is an amazing professor, this was my first biology class in 10 years and I was super nervous. Susan is very clear on her grading and is very helpful with any questions you may have. She assigns study guides which includes everything that will be on your test. I learned a lot in this class and I would definitely take a course with her again.
Susan is awesome!! I took her for Intro to Bio 1410 and Microbiology 2110 and I love the way she teaches as well as her study guides. As long as you read your textbook daily and follow her study guide you will ace her class. If you take this course online and don't understand something take the time to go to tutors! Or watch Bozman on youtube!
Susan is by far my favorite professor that I have had since beginning my education. I've learned a lot in her lab. She is very clear about what she wants and expects from the class. Her study guides give you all the information you need to know for the tests. Would recommend for anyone.
Susan is really specific in what she wants you to do and learn for the lab. For my class she wrote page by page instructions and they were very helpful! She tells you on there what you have to memorize and what concepts you should know for the quiz's. There's a quiz every class so be prepared to study! Not a hard class at all.
Taking this class online was extremely difficult. The test are hard and no feedback is given. From what I have seen on here shes a great instructor in class but it is very difficult online.
I had Prof. Tappen for a online bio class, she was very helpful and helped me come up with fun study tips to help me be successful in this course. She offered lots of extra credit, she drops the lowest exam and lets you know what is expected of you at the beginning of the course. I definitely recommend taking her classes.
Susan was a great teacher. You absolutely have to show up or will miss a lot. She knows exactly what she's doing and makes class fun. Would def take again!!
This professor is the most hardest and stubborn teacher I have ever had. Tells us not to procrastinate and yet it takes her a week and a half to put a scan tron in a machine and grade it. Impossible to see the test questions you missed and expects way too much information in a short period of time that you should know on the tests.
Susan is amazing! Your grade won't come easy, study lots! You have weekly quizzes so make sure to study the terms list, the whole lab packet, and PowerPoint pertaining to that weeks material. It's a lot of memorization but studying the models helps! She clears anything up if you need help and is really passionate about her job! She's awesome!!!!!!!
Susan was by far one of my favorite Professor! She started the semester by telling us she all wants us to end with A's but at the same time let us know it was not going to be easy. She cares so much about her students and it makes you want to do your best in the class! If you have to take A&P lab, do not take anyone else, take it with Susan!!
I took this class online. I will not be taking any classes with Ms. Tappen in the future. She makes things a lot more difficult than they need to be to save herself time. There is absolutely no extra credit. Lastly, her frequent emails ranting to us about procrastination and poor grades is really annoying.
Worst proffessor Ive taken at cnm! Took her for online bio lecture and for bio lab! Her online class was a huge mess made us purchase the book and didnt use it only 3 times! Didnt give extra credit hard tests hard grader sends very rude emails out! Shes a rude instructor that does not care!
I took the online Bio 1410 class. Her emails were unprofessional and weirdly specific. She sent emails out with lines like- "I saw very little motivation or effort in most of you..." and blamed us for not alerting her to HER mistake on a practice exam. On the other hand, her crossword puzzles and fill-in-blank home works were fun and helpful.
Prof. Tappen goes above and beyond for her entry-level Bio students. She takes her time and creates these AMAZING study guides that break everything down and tell you EXACTLY what to focus on for the assignments, quizzes, and exams. She puts so much effort into the assignments, even creating a brilliant cell respiration activity that was so helpful
I took her online Biology class this semester and I would not recommend it. She makes the material much harder than it needs to be. There are 6 challenging tests in total. In the last month of class we took 3 of the 6 tests, which was extremely stressful. Don't take this class unless you have a lot of time to commit to learning the material.
I would not recommend taking Bio 1410 online. The course was very difficult and intensive, as well as test heavy.
People are complaining about difficult courses being difficult. Odds are they're just poor students. Susan is awesome. If you have the opportunity to take her classes you should.
I took BIO 1410 with a different instructor and did not pass (by a long shot). This semester because of Prof. Tappen, I AM PASSING! She is a tough grader but it is ONLY because this is INTRO and it will only get harder. She really cares that all of us in this class will be in the health care field so she wants us to really understand this material.
The quizzes were a mix of multiple choice, fill in the blank and true/false. Tests were entirely fill in the blank. It was a difficult course. She expects a lot from her students and it wasn't always clear what she expected you to know about a topic. Homework is busy work, but make sure you study her terms list. She tests on minor details from it.
Susan is a great professor. I absolutely encourage anyone who is taking bio 1492 to take it with her. Shes on top of her game, she posts on CNM Learn and is shilling to help you. She truly cares about her students. And most important she knows what she is doing. LOVE HER!
Susan is very passionate about teaching and the subject matter. She may not be the easiest professor, but she is a real gem for all who are serious about learning. I also had her for A&P 1 and 2 labs. She is very methodical and give excellent handouts that helped me to absorb the material the best way possible.
Professor Tappen is great. I wouldnt pay too much attention to the bad reviews. She wrote the lab manual youll be using for lab so she knows her stuff. Just be sure your putting forth effort! Theres a quiz every week based on the lab from the week before and the upcoming unit. Luckily she provides a detailed study guide so its easily passable.
Prof. Tappen is a hard grader. You must completely dedicated 10 + hours a week to study EVERYTHING. Tests are closed book, long, Proctered. She sends out emails that are not inspirational. If you dont get nearly 100% on every assignment then you will get a low grade. She gives no opportunity for feedback or to help the student.
Had her for Bio, she is a wonderful instructor. Her lectures are clear, she provides tips for studying the material, and is on top of grading. She does make you work for your grade, however, if you keep up you will do great. Would definitely take her class again
I am in the middle of this class holding a B. This teacher is by far the most down to earth science teacher I have ever dealt with. She is tough on grading so pay attention to your spelling. Each week she uploads a video where she literally goes over the whole chapter and tells you what to pay the most attention to. Lots of reading. She's great.
Do NOT take online course with Ms. Susan. You teach yourself. Tons of reading and terms.
Shes very quiz, homework and test heavy .
Prof. Tappen is a hard grader. You must dedicate 10 + hours a week to study EVERYTHING. Tests are closed book, long, Proctered. She sends out rude emails that are not inspirational. Study material is a mess, her links never work. You're responsible for her mistakes. She gives no opportunity for feedback or to help the student.
Not a fan. Literally is rude, and my apple computer was having technical difficulties during an exam and couldnt get a hold of her, which she knew I was having technical difficulties cause I emailed her and she looked into it. She gave me a 0 on one of my exams.
This class was one of the worst classes I've taken. There was so much reading and note taking but almost none of it actually applied to the Lockdown Browser Exams. Also, she's very tough on grading and will take away all points for one small mistake or spelling error.
NEVER GAVE STUDY GUIDES &WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THEM, SHE QUICKLY DISREGARDED THAT IDEA STATING THAT IN HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS, YOU WONT HAVE THOSE,THEN HALFWAY THROUGH THE COURSE, WHEN SHE NOTICED PEOPLE WERE FAILING, SHE STARTED GIVING STUDY GUIDES. SHE WAS LATE TURNING IN MY GRADE WHEN I HAD TO DO INTERCESSION CLASS& CAUSED ME TO NOT BE ABLE TO SIGN UP
No practice quizzes/ exams. Lengthly study guide for each exam. She was extremely rude to the class after the first exam because we didn't meet her expectations. Dread taking every module exam because of the fear of disappointment! I can't wait for this to be over. I would not recommend it.
I have taken upper sciences courses and received As up until taking this course. Ms. Tappen-Cordova scheduled 7 Lockdown exams and 1 cumulative final. The final exam was scheduled 1 day after the 7th exam (was changed to earlier date than the syllabus). She did not lecture and more concerned about spelling than providing practice exams.
Worst professor I Have ever taken would not take again. Not nice and not helpful.
Dr. Tappen is straightforward and very organized. If you follow her guidelines, you will most probably get an A. I believe she is the best professor for online classes, you will not regret taking her class if you appreciate the discipline and proper learning.
She acted like this class was an inconvenience to her every day. She always complains about how she is so busy because of the students. She is not very helpful when asked questions.
I have taken Prof Tappen for the Bio Lecture and the Lab. She really cares about her students and will do anything to help you when you get stuck. As long as you communicate, work hard, and show effort, you'll succeed in her class. She also gives easy extra credit.
One of those professors that won't "hold your hand" but you will remember the content of this class for the rest of your days! She can come off as kind of egotistical but she knows her microbiology and biology! This course was online so it was very reading-heavy. If you want to get an A DO THE STUDY GUIDES.
Horrible teacher! 61% of the class was failing. She pretty much told us to drop her class, she doesnt care about you! She think she does nothing wrong its all the students faults no matter what.
Very difficult instructor most of your grade is based on weekly quizzes and exams. She will take several points off for any little thing such as not putting date or even misspelling a word. She rarely offers extra credit she will emphasize that you need to study for her class and the only thing you should be doing. I do not recommend this class.
You basically have to teach yourself her study guides also did not help me understand the material. She speaks very negatively which makes interacting with her unpleasant. I like that she holds students accountable but she needs to hold herself accountable for her lack of teaching.
This teacher grades way too tough. It's like she doesn't want you to succeed. I've never written anything about a teacher and I'm a straight A student, but she is very frustrating, and I felt like something needs to be said. Save yourself a headache.
She is consistently saying that averages on exams are normally higher, you have no chance to practice the exams. The study guides are no help at all. Your grade is based on test scores. If you bomb a couple of exams you have no chance at bringing your grade up. I'll be lucky if I pass with a C. The class average is usually in the 60s for every test
Susan Tappen has to be one of my favorite teachers so far. I took her class in the fall, and honestly it was pretty easy. She explains so well when giving a lecture and is always on top of grading stuff.
This professor literally wont care or even look at you if your not one of her A+ students I would struggle so much & I am new to college, she would act like these type of students were a nuisance to her. Extremely negative, she is a very tough grader, no matter how good you do itll never be enough for this professor. Avoid her like the plague.
The professor gives at least 7 exams during summer. You don't even get those many exams during a normal 15 week course. No extra credits are provided to help you even the slightest bit in your grade. It is exam after exam. Her stats showed half of her class getting poor grades all the time. Which obviously says a lot.
This was my first in-person lab so it was pretty difficult but got easier with time. Professor Tappen was helpful and willing to answer questions. She came off a little blunt when speaking to people, which is a bit scary at first, but it can be helpful so you know exactly what she's saying. Fast grader.
Save your $, scholarship & time. Don't take her class. She is egotistical cruel & threatening when you voice your concerns. She marks off points for every little thing. You could teach yourself all of the material you need to know and still not be able to get a perfect score on quizzes or her long worksheets. Take A&P with a genuine good instructor
She's a tough grader but fair. Not an easy A but you learn the material and learn it well. If you're going into the medical field, sign up. If you're looking for an easy grade, keep looking!
All the reviews are true, she grades TOUGH. If you are going into healthcare, get ready to realize all exams will be test heavy & self study. You cannot expect to do well in this class if you slack. It was very intense and sometimes I felt overwhelmed, but you will learn if you try. Productive students will succeed. If you're lazy, good luck!
The majority of the reviews don't give her justice at all. She goes above and beyond, whether it's hosting open labs in preparation for the final and midterm, or making her own worksheets for students with a terms list of everything that needs to be known. She gives every one the opportunity to pass, but you have to be willing to put in the work.
Although she is a tough grader, she is an amazing professor. As long as you follow the syllabus and textbook guidelines, you'll be good. She provides extra credit and provides clear instructions on assignments. She explains topics in a way that is easy to understand, and her class has always been really fun.
You need to read the textbook, but she has detailed study guides that really help and her lectures also tell you what's most important to know. She is honest about the amount of work you need to do and about what will be on exams. The textbook also has review apps. And again: use the study guides and extra materials she makes!
She's great, her lectures are very informative. Be very prepared to read a lot however, much of the quizzes and exams for based on the textbook and her lectures. Use the study guides they are extremely informative as well. I know the grade I got doesn't exactly reflect that but nonetheless.
Susan Tappen seems to resent her students. She grades tough just to be tough. She creates a poor learning environment. When I asked her a question, she told me "Go away." Students feel unsupported and marginalized. AVOID. I will not take another class with her again if I can help it
Very organized. Seemed overwhelming at first but it really wasn't once in a routine. It's not an entry level class, so you will be reading more. Susan's class is kind of hard and she is intimidating; but she does know her stuff and she will help you. Anytime I've asked questions (via teams) she has always given me QUICK and friendly reply.
I don't understand all of these ratings. This is a college level class. She is not going to hold your hand, nor give you credit for something that is misspelled. Study hard, flash cards helped me with this class. Plan on spending at least 8 hours a week studying (split it up). She is a fair professor, period. You've got to show up for yourself.
I like Professor Tappen as a PERSON. As a professor, not so much. She grades very heavy and marks off points for everything if not done EXACTLY how she wants it done. A majority of the class this semester failed, and although I studied very hard and put lots of effort in, I still got a C. Microbiology Lab was an interesting class but steer clear!
If you thrive under pressure, have ample time commitment, and enjoy detailed study, Her class can be highly rewarding. However, proceed with caution if you lead a busy life or prefer a less demanding learning experience. Late start class had assignments due every other day and exams every 10 days! lots of work BEWARE
she is a very difficult to work with avoid if you can!
Overall I definitely learned a lot. She is very organized, and provides A LOT of material on brightspace. Make no mistake, THIS CLASS IS DIFFICULT. She is test and quiz heavy. There is no room for error. She expects you to grasp a lot of knowledge quickly. Great person, just be prepared to study like you've never studied before!
This professor is very organized. Her assignments and instructions were also very thorough and understandable. She is a tough grader, but it has helped to understand the material better. Her lectures are very straightforward and concise. I would recommend if you're willing to put in the effort.
She is a good teacher, gives lots of quizzes and exams so you need to study to get a good grade, her lectures are good because she tells you the important info and makes it interesting. She gives good feedback and is really organized.
Dr. Cordova (Tappen) runs a tough class but is a great professor. She wants to see her students succeed and she is always willing to help out if need be. She is test heavy and you need to study, study, study.
She wants everything done her way or no way. Any time you ask her a question, she is condescending and rude. She is not approachable at all. She is a tough grader and very nit picky. A lot of her instructions contradict each other
She is a good teacher, theres lots of exams, and quizzes every time you have her class, therefore I highly recommend you study and be on time. Her lectures interesting, provides lots of important information that will help for other classes.
I try to leave only positive reviews, I've never seen such a teacher be SO strict on spelling, words that aren't even directly applicable to Micro and she will dock your assignment every which way to Sunday. Ignores students in passing, will communicate bare minimum she has to. Don't take her if you are ESL, she's not accessible to students.
I love this teacher so much, yes you have to be prepared to put in the work but you can learn a lot. Her lecture slides are easy to follow and her homeworks are extremely helpful and are good reference resources. She would check homeworks prior to the turn in date to ensure everything is correct for you. This class is worth the effort.
Thrive under pressure and have a photographic memory, this is the professor for you. When asked for clarifications on how to do better on her exams, response was study more. It is her way or no way. Will mark for misspelled words, hard grader, fast passed, not available, has favorites. She doesn't like questions during lecture. Avoid if you can.
Prof. Tappen was very nice, but she does make her expectations clear. Course work wasn't too difficult, especially when taken with a lab, but some things were more challenging than others.
Professor Tappen provides her students with materials and other resources to endeavor her students success
She is a great teacher and very organized; however, her class is very hard, and if you don't study, you won't pass. The exams are weighted so heavily.
The reviews both good and bad are true. Lab is more stressful than the lecture. Nitpicks subjective aspects of "instruction following". The intention is understandable but it's not an environment to ask questions. All of that said, she's passionate about the material and puts a lot of effort into teaching it
She is very passionate about the subject, but lacks in the material she puts out to prepare you for quizzes/tests. The class is very hard but you wont receive a lot of encouragement if you fall behind or dont understand. Quizzes are weight HEAVILY. Teaching style of an upper level biology class. Super tedious about "following instructions"
She is very very picky. Please read instructions VERY clearly as she will knock off points for something as simple as writing in lowercase. Tons of HW and quizzes, but after a while it keeps you on your toes for the exam, so they are helpful. Her exams are on the smallest things on her lecture slides so be sure to stay attentive and detailed,
I took her class last Fall, and it was my fave! She's passionate about the subject, which shows in her lectures. Her attention to detail is vital for studying bacteria, though it can feel nitpicky. The quizzes and tests are tough, but staying on top of the lab manual, lectures, and reviewing her slides helps. I'd take another class with her!
Very strict with spelling, and even lower or uppercase would matter. Doesn't show grace for late papers even if you have a very good reason. She is very passionate with the lecture, but I wouldn't take her class again as little things will count for the grade.
The course was challenging and structured with very firm guidelines. A bit more flexibility or warmth could enhance student engagement and ease anxiety.
Very complicated, instructions are very long.
instruction is longer than the real paper works we are working.
difficult professor to deal with
very tough in giving instructions
WE NEED TO WORK HARD TO PASS
The subject is easy, but the professor is very difficult. Not happy when someone asked questions during her lecture, and she also said she will look into the answer, but at the following meeting, there was still no answer. She doesn't consider your answer even if that is exactly the same answer she puts on her PowerPoint presentation.
Micro is a challenging class, but Prof. Tappen's passion and organization help set students up for success. She has good lectures, and her homework assignments are purposeful-serving as good study guides for exams and quizzes rather than just busy work. You will learn A LOT from her. I highly recommend her and would take her again in a heartbeat!
Professor Tappen was the worst professor I have ever taken as a college student. Professor Tappen does not give help when you do not understand and she expects you to know all of the material before she teaches you any. Professor Tappen will not accomadate you in any way and she lacks basic compassion. Do not take her class.
This professor ruined micro for me. The labs are actually fun and interesting. However, each class period felt like a hazing ritual. I've never seen someone demean and belittle so many students in front of the class. My table would genuinely argue over who had to ask her a question because she was so mean and condescending. Very tough grader also.
Too strict that it scares you coming into her class.
Super test heavy, grades hard takes off points for misspelling and not capitalizing I's. Really unapproachable, has a novel for a syllabus. If you take an online course she thinks everyone cheats, honestly thought I was going to fail after the first week. This class consistently kept me on my toes not in a good way.
unapproachable, will never take any of her class again.
She doesn't care about your reason, follow her or you will mess up in the class. Very terror and inconsiderate.
She doesn't like it when someone asked questions in the middle of her lecture. Very strict with late assignments even though you have a very important reason. She thinks you copied from the other classmates when it is late.
Doesn't care about you as a person. All she cares is your grade.
She is very strict and not very welcoming about your concerns.
A little bit of kindness goes a long way, but this professor never met this word.
If she doesn't know the answer to the question, she will tell you she is not a doctor. Which is true but at least she should have a little knowledge about it since she is teaching the class.
Extremely inconsiderate. Very rude and loves to embarrass students in front of everyone in the class.
