She knows the stuff. She taught me lots of goodie goodies. Her class made me realize that i never understood films. Take her, doesn't hurt.
very good
very very very good teacher...read the book, come to class and you're gonna get an A.
She is an awesome teacher that knows a lot about and loves films!!
very nice teacher, you can tell she is very much into films herself
Really cool teacher.
she's awesome and she know her ****
EXCELLENT TEACHER. Very willing to accomidate all learning styles. Straight forward expectations of students. Go to class, ask questions, Do well. EASY B, Somewhat easy A.
She's one of my favorites! She knows so much about Film and is a true expert in her field. You learn so much from her lectures. Students like her so much they attend her lectures even though they aren't enrolled in her classes! She's totally nice too!
Very clear, knows her stuff, nice, helps you when you need it.
SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!!!
she has the experience in film that backs up her teaching. she's a great person and teacher.. friendly and helpful.. i enjoy her class a lot
She is an eminence in her field. She is so well educated and cultured. It is a pleasure to listen to her lectures.
She knows what she's talking about...i walked out of class feeling that i have learned something...
Excellent professor. Her lectures are interesting... She knows her stuff and teaches it in an enjoyable way. Although her class is not very difficult, it is still very informative. That is a sure sign of an excellent professor. I'm a film major, BTW.
very nice teacher!!trust me
One of the most memorable professors I've had. She is involved, she is passionate and extreemly well-spoken. She will remember students' names as well as grade fairly on papers as long as you cite yourself.
Knows what she is talking about. Great and interesting film teacher. Exams are not too hard. Thumbs up!
her passion for film is contagious. being in her class convinced me to change my major to film.
she is great
wonderful
(to be continued)But I still recommend her because she is the best teacher in the film critics class in De Anza. Try to attend all of her classes and you'll pass easily and get an A.
This was my only film class and it was argueably my best class this year. Very interesting, I now look at films a different way. Pretty easy, not many assignments. I would take a class with this teacher again.
Fabulous teacher. Why isn't this woman the head of the F/TV film Dept?
I agree with all the great things said about this woman.
She is one of the very best teachers I've ever had. I lover her.
She is such a great teacher and is so helpful if you have any questions or concerns. Her intro to film class is the best! I love her!
although i struggled a little bit in the beginging, i did show up to every single class and pulled of an A, suprizingly! she's an awsome teacher. but she will tell you majoring in film is almost impossible to make a living off of so i changed my major.
i think her class is a little bit hard because of all that reading you have to do from that thick textbook. although it is fun to watch the movies, the movies are really long and lasts 2-3 hrs. not including lecture.
just wonderful!
This is a great teacher. It is a interesting class. Do all the work and you will do alright. It is one of the best classes I have had.
One of the best professors ive ever had!
She thinks she's the sh*t but her lectures are boring & the short films are even worse! She likes movies like psycho & silence of the lambs where there's lots of killing & bloodspill. Learn to suck up to this looney teacher or you wont get a good grade.
She'll make you believe her classes are easy but then she'll try to catch you off-guard. She could be very sneaky and underhanded and i don't recommend her at all. Take someone else if possible.
boring
Uneducated people write bad things about this teacher. She is Great. Makes me wonder why some poeple want to study films if they can´t sit through some of the best movies ever made, such as Hitch**** Psycho.. She´s GREAT. EASY TESTS!!
she bases her tests mostly on her lecture which is great for those who dont like to read. that doesnt mean that u shouldnt read. if u read then u will do a lot better than if u didnt. i took the summer quarter version of her class (in 6 weeks). its great!
The class was very easy if you just showed up. Tests based on her lectures, so reading is optional. She is very nice, and VERY helpful whenever you have a question. Class can be boring, but is easy and sometimes interesting.
This teacher is average at best. The only reason she has good ratings is because those that got A's gave them to her. The truth is she's ordinary-just the average aficionado-wanna be that never made it so she'll pick on you if you ever disagree with her.
dull and boring teacher; she makes you watch stupid movie clips in class but i wasn't surprised because it was a stupid class to begin with. plenty of alternative classes out there that are much more fun and interesting.
Gives boring lectures and talks WAYYY too much about nothing. If only she would shut up for a minute and let you enjoy the movie!! Very annoying teacher! Yeah, that's the word- ANNOYING!!
dont listen to the negative comments. these peoples brains are so diluted from watching crap like lord of the rings, they cant see how good this class. if you are a TRUE fan of GOOD film this is the class for you.
She wasn't very good. Midterm and final were somewhat challenging. Also, the written assignment was hard. In addition, she didn't tell us in advance before the exam date. Also, class met once a week but very long. So, not a wise choice to take her.
Very boring lecture. Required a lot of works for two research papers. Not recommended unless you are a film major.
I've taken every class she teaches, and she's a wonderful film instructor. This is great for students who really want to learn about REAL film. It's an easy class to pass, and of course a teacher will lecture on certain aspects of films she shows. This isn't Mercado, it's a class.
Gives very informative lectures. Lotta research will be needed for her papers, but other than that, a very nice, helpful and enthusiatic teacher. A pleasure to have.
I loved this class. At first I thought it was going too be one of my hardest classes but it turned out if you do the work you'll do great. She was great!!!!!!!!! She always offered to help and knew her subject very well.
I can't believe the negative comments! It must be from those students who couldn't care less about film. Susan is the most helpful instructor I have come across. I found the class to be very intellectually stimulating, and I'm a 3.8 student. Don't believe the neg stuff, those of you who care.
I don't really want to repeat the positive comments but let me briefly say this: if you do ALL the worksheets, know how to write an essay, and pass at least one exam with a C, you'll likely to get a B. You don't even have to like film to enjoy this class. Believe me, it's worth the effort and time.
took two of her classes they were great and interesting.she is one of the best teachers in DeAnza! She is very helpful,go to her class.I cant believe the neg comments. I went to all of her classes, listen to her lectures and wrote the essay assigments. I didn't even need to study much for the final.A
She is the best film history teacher I ever had! So friendly, helpful, and her lectures rock! The tests are not difficult if you do the reading, however, the reading is moderately challenging (but not difficult at all). Her choice of films to show is excellent. I wish I had her more than once.
Tests are not that hard if you really study. attend every session and have good notes on the films. the research paper is pretty hard though. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO WRITE A RESEARCH PAPER, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Because the paper is worth 1/5 of the grade.
She rocks, I love her class
it was a great class and she was a great teacher. i learned a lot and the class was fairly easy. who wouldnt like a class where you watch movies!
One of the best instructors in DeAnza. She makes you learn the subject, but she leads you through it. She is fair and clear and very knowledgeable. She is welcoming during her office hours and really is able to help you. She goes the extra mile and loves what she does. I took the class because of her excellent reputation and will take more.
She is very clear, and her lectures are very interesting. She really made me interested in film history.
Susan gives an excellent lecture, repeats important details, and tests you exactly on what she taught. If you attend all lectures and take notes, you barely need to read the book. Tests are more than fair - bordering on easy. She clearly loves to teach, will spend a lot of time outside of class with you, and knows her facts like an encyclopedia.
easy class with some boring movies
she was not as nice as I thought, althought I got a B.................. :(

The movies we watch are interesting but she doesn't want to anwser any questions or help with any of the assignments. She acts like she just wants to teach what she has to and leaves it at that. Only take the class if your prepared to figure things out on your own.
she is a very good teacher and totally knows her stuff. if you are not that interested in films and just want to take this class because you think its going to be easy: dont! (thats what i did) it was a really cool class, and the teacher is super nice and helpful though.
Very helpful outside of class. Also accomodating to personal issues.
Knows her stuff and is very helpful and accommodating. But you have to want to really learn about films, not just watch films as entertainment. Took her for intro to film and was so fascinated that I took film history, too.
she is very very nice. chooses good movies that make you think, i loved the movies she chose for the french new wave, post WW2 Italy, and film noir. she really wants to see you do well and gives many opportunities for increasing your grade. she tests you on notes taken in class, handouts, and the readings so if you prepare well, you should get an A
Good teacher. Was a little hard sitting in the clas for about 3.5 hours but gives breaks regularly. Interesting film choices. Grades not too hard, need to be there every day tho. Reccomended.
An easy GE class if you are interested in movies. Also great for major students. Respond to emails promptly. 1 quiz (50), 1 mid-term (100),1 final + take-home essay (100+50), 1 optional research paper, (40) 1 optional screening (10) and an auto 10pts. You need 270 to A. Her movie choices are great and you have to attend every class to succeed.
THE nicest teacher I have ever had at De Anza. She is extremly understanding and helpfull with the assignments. Her class helped me to appriciate film much more. She is a credit to her field. She REALLY knows her stuff, she helped me respect film & critics. Take her class you won't regret it. She is a very classy lady, I was impressed.
She was pretty easy. Sometimes it was super difficult to sit through her damn movies for 3.5 hours but at least it's only once a week. It will ruin your movie going expierience so if you don''t want that then don't take the class. Got a B and didn't even try that hard. If you need a class for GE then take it cuz its not to difficult.
This was the best class! Susan is sweet and treats us as equals, yet doesn't talk over our heads. Great for beginners and experts at film, and the subject material was fascinating! She chooses controversial movies, unlike other teachers who are scared to show sex or violence. The paper was long and challenging, but I'm so glad I took the class!
Susan class was a great experience. She is very articulate and knowledgeable. I recommend her. I also wish to take more classes from her.
It's an easy B. but if u want an A, u gotta work hard. all hw are in-class. actually u don't hv to spend anytime on this class but just attend it. however, the environment makes you sleep in class! You can learn sth from her though.
Susan is such a sweet lady, I don't know how anyone could not like her! She has a Bachelors in English so I recommend her for any English majors interested in film as well. I found the class was rich in English-style analysis of film, that I, as an Eng major myself, deeply enjoyed. She has a deep understanding of all aspects of film and it shows.
I am very interested in film and thought i could easily get an A in FILM 1...but no...it's hard..the essay was so hard..i got a B in the end...but she is a very good teacher. professional..graduated from USC...i recommend FILM major students take her...
I loved her class. We sat and watched short clips of films and studied their meanings. Pay attention, take notes, and have fun!
easy class, watch movies and take notes. I didn't need the textbook once, I got everything I needed from her handouts and my own notes. there is 1 quiz a midterm and a final. and an optional paper.
Tavernetti is the Sweetest lady ever! Her grading system is a little weird but I think if i put a little more effort into her class i would have gotten the A. But she's def. not difficult. She's wonderful and I def. don't question why students become film majors after her class.
Loved her class. Nice lady, very knowledgeable about the film industry. Will make you appreciate film more, even if you loved it to begin with. Thanks Mrs. Tavernetti.
Really knows her stuff. Extreeeemely nice and easy to talk to if you're ever in need of any help. The class is no problem as long as you attend.
I absolutely love Prof Tavernetti. I already love film to begin with, but she is so knowledgable and passionate she just makes you love it even more. She wants you to get a good grade and i owe my A to her. She is very helpful and loves to answer your questions about meterial, assignments, and anything else you might need. Highly recommended!
SO chill, and super sweet. This class was easy but i still walked out with film knowledge. totally recommended!
Really a great teacher who is very knowledgeable about film. Extremely helpful and nice. Very easy class but you still learn so much about film from it by just showing up to class. Highly recommended teacher for any film class.
She is really nice, helpful, and funny. Everybody likes her. Almost four hours kind of boring, but you won't be tired, bored or sleepy because she won't kame you bored. But you have to work hard.
Susan is very passionate and knowledgeable about film. She does add ppl--I took a fri class with her &so half of the class dropped by the 3rd week. 1 midterm, 1 written assignment (pls start on this asap!!), & 1 final. Exams not 2 difficult, she doesnt grade based on grammar on the essay portion on the exam. She will on the written assignment tho.
Don't buy the Barsam textbook! Buy the one that she wrote!! It's so much more helpful and on topic with lecture :)
She is just amazing ,her teaching is clear and informative . The Tests are a piece of cake .
She's great, the choice of movie is classic and important. Informative, really learn a lot from this class. Highly recommend this class and the teacher
Amazing teacher! Very insightful and nice. Ask her any questions and she'll answer as best as she can! Class is extremely interesting. She also respects students' opinions and ideas. Midterm was easy (mc and essay); 1 written assignment; final was not too bad (short answers). Really take her if you get the chance, you won't regret it!
she is incredibly nice and uber helpful. i took her class as an honors class and i was a bit worried that i wouldn't get an A because i am not a film major (even though intro class, its a bit difficult, for me at least). some material is a little stale, but pay attention! if you do, you'll pass with flying colors.
Susan Tavernetti is an outstanding professor. Being in her class is like having your best friend's uber-cool mom for a teacher. She is incredibly kind and personable. Her lectures are meticulously planned and organized, she presents clearly (with careful examples), and the 4 hr class goes by so quickly! She knows everyone's name in the class.
She's really helpful, however the paper you have to write for this class may seem confusing, make sure to show your rough draft to her because it really helps. I got an A in this class. It's very easy, however when it comes to exams make sure to review her online notes.
Very interesting and informative class. Sometimes she lets students go off on tangents which is annoying. She is easy to ask questions to but the way she phrases stuff in tests is pretty ambiguous sometimes and sometimes seems like she's trying too hard to trick us instead of actually making sure we know the material.
The most informative course I had this quarter. U'll learn everything u need to know about the movies industry. She's very very very professional. Mid-term and final are question/multiple choices (depends), QUITE HARD. Plus a mandatory paper, which she grades pretty hard, u must write better than a EWRT 1B paper. but It's great afterall
She is a really good teacher. The textbook really helps to understand the online notes. Review the online notes is the best way to get a good grade on the exams. The paper may be hard if you don't do couple of drafts and show it to her. She is really helpful and it's important to ask her questions during office hours. I got an A.Love the class
Super easy class. Few extra credit chances. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM. no papers (ec), movies every week, the lecture is helpful. notes online though. read the book for an A on the exams. I didnt read it and i got B's.
Tavernetti is one of my favorite film teachers at de anza. I thought her history of film 1950s to current class and i can tell you that even as a film major I learned a bunch of new things. She will introduce you to the appreciation of The French New Wave, The dogme95 Movement, and current Hollywood practices and formulas. Great teacher.
She is certainly a great film theory professor, I must say. She's quite intelligent in the simplest way, and clear in her lectures and her expectation for the exams you have to take for the class. Overall, an easy A for anyone who's passionate in film.
Easy A. show up, do the work. lectures are clear, movies shown in class are cool. the tests are not tricky, they are all from the lectures, also very helpful if you need her help.
She is a very nice lady who enjoys in teaching and full of passion. The note is very important and helpful. The films that shown in the class are all classic and awesome. For the research paper, send her your rough draft. Talk to her during her office hours. IT HELPS ! It bumped my grade up to A!
Really great lectures and examples. She's very helpful and clear and a total sweetheart. I had fun in her class and absolutely aced my paper on "Looper" :D As long as you're passionate about the subject, it should be an easy A.
She is nice and knows movies very well but as an ESL student, if you dont know the english names of the movies that she mentions as examples, then it is hard to follow the class. But overall its an interesting and not a hard class.
Took this class to satisfy GE requirement. By the end of the term I fell in love with the subject. Because of her my passion for film ignited. She's an incredible teacher! I had not background in film, but she''s very clear and intimidating. Only way to fail is to NOT show up. HIGHLY recommended.
I just love this teacher! She is probably one of the best professors at De Anza. Films are interesting, although they are a bit old, you wil learn a lot from them. Worksheets (She gives Full Credits if you have tried) are done during class, so DO NOT skip her class. 1 Midterm + 1 Final, pretty easy if you have revised. Overall, I recommend her!
This teacher is incredibly knowledgable in her subject and it was a pleasure attending her class. She prepares very informative lectures with example clips from movies. I definitely learned a lot and developed a greater passion for films! Pretty fun class, not too hard either as long as you do your worksheets and remember some key terms.
If this is your 1st film class, some material might be hard. But I had already took good one in high school and I was prepared. I eventually realized that the readings were pointless. Out of all the exams, there were only 3 questions from the book. Questions come from her lectures, and details from the movies. Do extra credit. It helps a lot
The most enjoyable class I have ever taken. Susan is incredibly experienced and explains concepts very clearly (if you absorb what she says in class, you won't need to read the book). Do the worksheets (in-class, every class) and remember the lecture material and you're set. Giving her a rough draft of the essay also helps.
Great class of you want a generalization of the field getting into it. Extremely clear and nice although the lectures can get boring.
I never took a film class in my life until this Winter quarter. Tavernetti is a great professor and made me feel comfortable taking this class for GE. Nothing was too overwhelming throughout the quarter. Class is very simple. Go to class, watch the movie/clips, listen to lectures, read the required passages, and then take the tests. Great class.
She is extremely helpful & knowledgeable (went to USC film school!!) Took this class as a GE req. All lectures were posted online and most of class consisted of watching films. Tests were fairly hard but fair (based heavily off of films watched in class)-studying is a must for an A.
I've had most of her classes, and all I can say is that she is the best mentor that I've ever had here at De Anza.
Tavernetti's classes are an absolute pleasure if you have any interest in film. Additionally, Her lectures and notes are clear and engaging and cover the subject matter extensively. I wouldn't ask for a better intro to film. Also, her beginning classes require your focus but otherwise are never too hard, but her advanced classes are challenging.
Susan might just be my favorite professor at De Anza. Film, in itself, is a very interesting subject, but Susan's straight-forward approach at teaching it adds to the enjoyment and simplicity of the course. She is concise, supportive, and very knowledgable. Her demeanor and passion toward film drew me into taking another one of her classes.
What more can I say about her! She is a very extraordinary professor and passionate about what she teaches. A one of a kind professor. The only time she can be a little cranky is when students forget to email her in advance about their extra credit topic, it's not that hard to do.
She's so passionate, which makes a great class. 1 quiz, 1 midterm, 1 final: you NEED to attend lectures, b/c everything she says will be important. Also study her PDF files. Pay attention to all the films you watch. Just really engage and focus during class, and restudy that material to pass. Class recommended for movie enthusiasts/appreciators!
She is the best Film professor in De Anza! I personally, highly recommend to take her class as an GE! She's very understanding and willing to help students if you have any problem on home works or education plans.
Most incredible, passionate, all-inspiring film professor of all time. I don't know how she does it but hands down Susan is the best film instructor not at De Anza, but anywhere! Her selections of films to watch make you open up on a lot of things, not just filmmaking, but life. Always do the optional essay, don't do it for just extra credit.
I can see why everyone loves her, she is an incredible lecturer that gets you sinked into the material she teaches. Nothing bad to say about her, she CARES about her students so much she always checks in with them on where there gonna transfer.
She's a very seasoned and well knowledged professor who is good for someone not a film major and film majors alike. She knows her stuff and really is able to share her passion with the students. I learned a lot about film in her class and gotten to appreciate and understand different genres of film. Taker her if you can even get a spot in her class
She's the reason I look forwards to my Fridays Her lectures and sections of films help take the Edge off. Her voice and lecturing style is 100% compelling and never boring. Im surprised she doesn't do voiceover work on the side. Quiz and Exams are not that hard as long as you study and remember the clips and movies she screens. Always rewatch!
Man we are so lucky to have her as our professor! We should be glad she doesnt teach at USC (she went there) Her film knowledge and lecturing style is just incredible and exquisite. The more you take from her, your critical view of seeing movies will never be the same. Any questions you have on which Film School to apply to, she can help you.
Took it for GE but I absolutely loved it! I was always pretty interested in film, but I learned even more from the class and the professor. She is super helpful super nice, you can ask her anything. Go to every class because there will be worksheets and that's how she counts attendance. Midterm, paper, and final.
Susan Tavernetti and her classes have received overwhelming critical acclaim. Sorry if that shows like a tv review. But man, everything about her is incredible, her compelling and captivating lecturing, film sections, and her knowledge. A very respected teacher that every film student can learn from.
Great Class. Professor Tavernetti shows a great collection of films and has the best film knowledge out of all the FTV professors, none of them can rival up to her. This is my 4th class with her, exams and extra-credit are pretty much the same as always. Study the notes and re-watch the films and you'd get an A, even without the extra credit.
Prof. Tavernetti is a solid instructor. I wasn't thrilled to have to take a film history course for my major, but she is passionate and a great speaker. While this class wasn't always the most exciting, I can't really say anything bad about Tavernetti. She reviews with the whole class before exams and emails out study guides. I would take her again
She's the most popular choice to take FTV1. A great choice to take as one of your first FTV classes to learn the basics that you will carry on for rest of your film student career. She's a solid lecturer, a small worksheet due at the end of each class, and she does a in-class review of the material before a test.
I received my first "B" ever from this class. It is not an easy A class especially if you have no prior film background. There are no + or - grades. Your overall grade is composed of four items weighted at 100 points each: assignments (you get full credit), midterm, paper, final. She grades hard. There's no extra credit and she doesn't round up.
She's a phenomenal teacher! If your into Film Studies, she's the teacher for you. People that don't do well in her class are mostly because they tanked on the tests and exams. She's not a hard grader, students just don't write well on their essays or ditch during the Film Screenings.
You can get an A easily if you review what you learn in the class. It does not matter if you have learned the film before or not.
Tavernetti is a great teacher! She can be firm at times towards students who don't follow her guidelines, she doesn't need to baby you. All you do is watch clips and than a great movie. She offers her time to help students, despite her busy Chair of FTV department schedule.
If your a Film major, her classes should be a piece of cake. If you're not, PAY ATTENTION to clips and films she shows. Ask questions or visit her at her office. Exams are based off the clips and films she shows; mostly T/F, matching, and MC on the reading; I get stuck on those. Overall, great teacher!
I took this class as a GE and it was not hard. Definitely study for the tests using the lecture and movie notes (the lecture notes are also posted online). She also goes over questions on the tests right before. Textbook is optional. There's a quiz, midterm, and final exam. Definitely do the EC research paper and screening.
I took both 2 A and B this quarter with Pro. Tavernetti. She's fun to talk about movies and filmmakers with, its like she's seen everything. She's so passionate! Every class she lectures, shows clips (memorize them) and screens a movie (rewatch or look it up on Wiki, to memorize for the exams) a quiz, mid-term, and Final, each with an Essay!
Tavernetti is an amazing and passionate professor who loves film and wants all of her students to succeed. She is easy to access outside of class. Her tests are straight forward and mainly focus on the films she shows in class. She offers a major EC essay that can boost your grade my an entire letter! She is very understanding and effervescent!!!:)
Susan is very qualified and passionate. Her film history classes can at times be boring due to the content, but she usually finds a way to keep students engaged. She is an amazing public speaker and is highly respected by students in the program. Her quizzes and tests are all based on her lectures, in-class screenings and light assigned readings.
I took her for both 2A and Intro to Film. I've LOVED both classes. She teaches you how to look at films critical and analytically, her selections of films were very interesting. Both classes, all the exams come from the movies and clips she screens, so rewatch them if you need to, don't ditch class!
Had a blast in this class. The class was straight forward and easy.
She graded my final wrongly. So I asked her to check again then she fixed. She does not give any extra credit and you will get score by one midterm, final, class assignment and written assignment. It is not an easy class.
Easy A but boring. Unlike other teachers who lecture the first 2 hours and show a movie the remaining 2 hours, Tavernetti lectures the entire 4 hours. Nevertheless, her tests are not too difficult and she is very kind should you ask for help.
The classes are very long. You are only graded by a quiz, a midterm, and a final. They're not too bad, but make sure you do your readings and take notes. She has very long lectures, but is very resourceful and kind to her students. She is passionate about the study of film and is open to any comments or criticism you have towards the film.
Took this class for GE. Prof Tavernetti is amazing and her lectures are the best. They are well paced and easy to understand. As long as you pay attention in class you're all set for the midterms and final. Also, do the worksheets.
I took Tavernetti for two of the three film history courses offered at De Anza. She is very lively and is great when speaking in front of a larger class. I question some of the films she shows (some are great, some are boring) and some people fall asleep during the screenings lol. I went to one of her office hours and she is helpful and kind.
Professor Tavernetti is probably one of the best lecturers at De Anza College. I never once got bored of her lectures and found myself wanting to learn more about the films she listed as examples. She gives students all of the appropriate tools to disassemble cinema and analyze each element individually. Would take her again.
Amazing lecturer & highly knowledgable! All you need to do is put effort into attending class & making sure you write quality essays to get a good grade. My favorite professor at De Anza.
She's a sweetheart. Focus on the lectures and Canvas material, not so much on the book, but I'd recommend reading through it at least once.
I'm torn about this class. Online COVID class is one lecture per week, followed by ten million screenings. Class is difficult if you don't have prior knowledge in film and are looking to satisfy a GE. Tests are difficult if you didn't memorize all of the information, even obscure facts about the screenings.
Only take this class if you're a film major and not as a GE req. Made that mistake when I signed up. You can't go into it thinking you're going to watch movies for the entire quarter. 1 lecture each week along with a bunch of screenings and articles (you need to watch them). Tests are a little hard because of how specific they are.
Love this professor and no meetings. The midterm was a bit hard, the final exam was easy. Her lectures may be super long but the information is amazing to learn. Reading the textbook is good to have for a better understanding. Grades easy, you do have hw every week as well as a paper due at the end of the quarter. ASK QUESTIONS FOR CLARIFICATION.
I took her film online class over for Spring 2020 quarter and I can tell you that she grades really tough on her papers. The midterm is crazy specific and is pretty hard. The paper that used to be optional is no longer optional and is really hard (4-6 pages about one cinematic element or commercial). Final is 11 questions, all short answers.
Ridiculously hard grader. She grades as if you were in a Literature class. For our paper, a majority of the points I got docked for had nothing to do with the content. Rather it was because she felt that my word choice could've been stronger. Same thing for the final, graded more on my word choices rather than the content. Final is short answers.
Discussion every week, but no assignments. Required to watch films and if you don't you WON'T/BARElY pass. 2 extra credit opportunities that are essays but are a grade saver. Lecture heavy, TB are required to skim/read or you'll be lost. No meetings, Final and midterm are a bit hard, they are timed and gives you half the amount of time to take it.
I love film and Prof. Tavernetti was the best introduction i could get about the cinematic industry. I definitely learned the basics and I wish there were classes she taught that gave u 5 credits instead of 4. She includes clips from films in her modules/lectures. Really amazing teacher if you love cinema. If u dont, she'll get u hooked into it! :)
Really enjoyed this class! Definitely think it would have been more interesting had it been held in person but I thought it was pretty engaging especially compared to my other online classes. Overall, this is a fairly easy class. As long as you do the homework and put some effort into the written assignments and exams, you'll be fine.
I enjoyed Prof Tavernetti, her lectures were interesting and the films were entertaining. Nothing was too difficult in the class. She was a great help when I reached out regarding a homework question and answered promptly. Overall a very nice professor and I would take another class with her!
Prof. Tavernettis teaching style is one that is strict on a students responsibility to keep up with course material that corresponds with the week, with the addition of consistent due dates. Her grading is emphasized in provided rubrics, however, it is her critical commentary that students should be aware to further excel in the class.
took her to fulfill igetc, really nice prof! posts everything you need to do for the week on monday, everything due on sunday at 11:59. i would take more of her courses in the future if i can, you can find the textbook online but it's not necessary. take her if you can!
I am taking this class to fulfill my IGETC requirements, and my major is not related to Film in anyway. Honestly this particular class does not feel like a good fit for me because it really honestly feels like a class for those who are Film majors. I would say I am a pretty good student, but something about this class just gets me very lost.
The class content is extremely filthy. Grading is tough. Tests are full of random trivia from the movies you watch in class. Discussion posts every week are a little better for grading, but deadlines are crucial for your grade. Don't take this class if you are not a film major.
The weekly discussion posts we do are useless and the class is determined solely on exams. Exams are extremely difficult where it is just a random jumble of facts that you need to have memorized from the lectures. She is retiring which probably is the reason why she is so difficult, wanting her students to go down w her in the sinking ship
I really despise this teacher. This is a classic case where a professor takes her class too seriously. This is an igetc course made for exclusively film students/majors. I misinterpreted this class due to the previous reviews, but i just wanted to put it out there that this class is a lot of work. And when I mean a lot, I MEAN A LOT.
I wouldn't recommend her class unless you are a film major, but she is nice and cares about filmmaking. There's a lot of homework, but I would expect that for a history class. Very hard grader and the extra credit is even harder to finish. It's a thesis! She's a good professor, but I would avoid her class if you aren't willing to put in the work.
The films are intresting to watch. I only saw the teacher threw her recorded lectured but I've emailed her and she very helpful. Films are a big part of the class so make sure to watch them. Assignments were simple but took time to do. Good class if you're good at finding deeper meaning in things and connecting things together.
Professor Tavernetti is a tough grader, but the coursework is valuable for film majors. Lots of writing assignments, so get ready to put in the work. unstuck ai can help with study prep, but don't rely on it too much - engage with the material.
she is amazing. so sweet.
In my experience, Professor Tavernetti wasn't the tough grader that some reviews on here made her out to be. Homework is a discussion post once a week that's worth very little, but the work that's actually worth a lot consists of a test, the midterm, and the final. Lots of material to consume, but not hard at all to manage! Great feedback as always
Susan Tavernetti fueled my inspiration and hunger for film. She is inspiring, caring, incredibly knowledgeable, and passionate about everything film. She makes every viewing incredibly special with her deep dive knowledge about the background for each film, trivia about cast and crew, and analysis of the symbolism. I would take every course of hers
