she DOES NOT teach well at all. if you need more than just the book to learn, take any class she teaches somewhere else if you can...its not pretty
Terrible teacher. She knows Chemistry, but is absolutley horrible at teaching it. The worst teacher I have ever had. She is unrealistic in her expectations of what she wants the class to know in the the context of how she teaches it. I understood the material better when I stopped going to class and started just reading the book alone.
we are not doing bad because of the fact that we came from high school thinking this stuff is easy and its not, it is easy, i am in cap so i need to raise my gpa so i took it, i know all the material, i know it well even b4 i took this class, but its her questions and stupid online quiz that kill gpa, and the fact she gets stuff wrong is rediculous
Living proof that just b/c you're smart doesn't mean you can teach. Even read b4 class but was completely confused when she explained same material. Compares elements & molecules to family and food. Online quizzes only hurt you. Every test had atleast 1 error, which meant xtra points but such a pain. Numerous errors in lectures that further confuse
This class wasn't the easiest of all my classes, but it was still not so bad. Yes she made mistakes on her slideshows, but she admit her problems well and fixes them. Yes She goes fast, and goes through the slides fast, but the slides are posted online later anyways. And also, on the syllabus she even wrote this is a fast pace course, and other th
she's horribly hard, take any teacher other than her
i hated this class. i barely ever went. she went to fast for me to follow and i never really got what she was saying. for me, learning the book made me get a B in the class but it was a lot of work.
A smart lady but not so great at teaching. When I was studying for my final I found alot of grading errors so I wasn't sure if what I was studying was even right. She made alot of concepts more difficult than they actually were. I didn't miss a single class and I got more out of the book than I did from her lectures because she zips through them.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
If you're not great at Chemistry, do not take this prof. Be sure to read the book before class. Uses WebCT for slides and homework. Makes mistakes on homework, but will fix them if you tell her. A much better professor one-on-one, willing to answer any question you have.
TTRRRUUUUUSSSSTTTTTTT! This class is HARD! Good luck to whoever takes it. Read the previous comments and believe what they say. Only chem teacher for nursing majors and that sucks! She will RUIN your GPA, TRUUSSTTT. Test are tricky and a lot of pointless homework people have no time to do. 1st test is easy, goes downhill from there. Goodluck again!
Very helpful if you talk to her. Made an 88, but she still bumped me up to an A. Class is difficult if you do not read book and do practice problems at end of Chapters.
Teacher is alright. If you go to class and read the book and also do the practice problems in the book, you will do okay. I made a c and 2 b's on 3 exams and I read the book and did all the practice problems in the book. Go to her after class and ask her things and she will help. You have hw assignments on webct. You HAVE to buy a clicker.
This is the worst class you'll take at UTSA if you are a hlth sci major. If you dont take her basic chem in the fall your going to have a hard time because she assumes everyone took her for the fall. The test are nothing like the homework. No curves. Doesnt take interest in student's passing or failing. Writes her test and they are hard to read.
This class is so hard. Huge amount of homework. She dosnt explain material well at all, always makes mistakes in lecture and on her slides which makes class that much more confusing. Tests are very hard and no curve!! The whole class could have a failing test everage and she dosnt curve! class is difficult & extremely frustrating! Dont take her!
I loved her! She was a little tough at first but once you got used to her test style it was cake. She's tries to make jokes but they're not that funny and attendance is a MUST!!!! You have to buy a clicker and if you have any questions she's more than happy to help. I strongly reccommend her for any serious student
This teacher IS GREAT. No matter what those people say. She explains things very well and uses great real life examples which helps. The homework is online which sucks cause it's harder. But her tests are surprisingly easier than i thought. TAKE HER. she is a great teacher and VERRRRRY nice!
She makes analogies that just confuse you more than help you. She goes extremely fast through the material. Too bad her tests are nothing like the homework. I hate that we are expected to spend hours on homework and then study for hours more on other material that the homework didn't cover. It is a waste of time in my opinion.
Unless you were born a chemist, live it and breathe it I suggest that you avoid this class at all costs, unless you are an AHS student! She teaches like you know it, blows through her slides, tests are extremely hard unless you are the master of TF qs,and the homework load...she assigns way too much and its online! GL if you have to take her!
this class is not for slackers. however if you are a serious well behaved student that will actually take time to study and read the text book than this class is fairly simple. she is a great teacher who really knows her stuff and is always very willing to help during her office hours. extremely nice.
Smart lady, but isn't to great at teaching some concepts. She also teaches the course as if you have quite a bit of previous knowledge in the class. She uses Wiley plus for homework, and it is quite possibly the worst program I ever worked with. If possible take another teacher.
She is a good teacher, Takes her time, if you have a question she'll slow it down so don't be afraid to ask, she baby steps it, no problems other than using wiley plus, and you have to buy a 50$ clicker
Class itself isnt hard, she does break things down into steps. BUT, TESTS are kinda hard. SHE DOES make you buy a 50$ clicker for in class quizes, and she makes you buy a 75$ online program to do homework. Which sucks, because you either get the answer EXACTLY right or its wrong. She has an attitude sometimes too.
This teacher is okay.. She doesn't like to be proven wrong and makes many mistakes during lectures. Her tests are pretty easy but she does include a few trick questions. The online homework is mandatory and difficult but I think she curves the grades. The final was very easy too; most of it came from the old tests.
Unfortunately this teacher has a hard time teaching 250 students effectively. Tries to teach one concept 5 times and it confuses everyone, homework is online and done by the book company so it is horrendous, made the diff for me between A and B and homework should never be the deciding factor. My 3 year 4.0 streak is gone because of this class.
One of the WORST 3 teachers of my LIFE. At times you wonder if she has any idea what she's talking about, proving anyone can get a degree. She makes SOO many mistakes in class, and claims the book has it wrong. I felt so sorry for other kids who didn't know their stuff coming into the class.
Such a HORRIBLE teacher. I honestly think she writes her own good reviews. In a class of 2 or 300 students, NO ONE was content. HORRIBLE at math, always getting solutions wrong, and blaming it on the book. it was surreal. overcompensates her insecurity and lack of competence with STRICT policy and constantly reminding us of her degrees.
The professor is just fine. She does make a few mistakes, but they're minor. She has office hours and is very approachable. Like almost any class, you can't rely solely on lectures. Chemisty is hard. Read the book before class, make your own notes, and use her lectures to clarify any questions.
I thought she was a really good teacher. She assigns quite a bit of homework, but doing it helps you for the tests. She is very nice and if you dont understand something she will go back through it for the whole class. No quizzes at all and the tests are pretty straightforward if you pay attention somewhat.
A lot of people are doing bad in this class cause theyre lazy and don't do any of the homework or go to class. I'm doing just fine and all I do is do ALL the homework (time consuming but helpful) and memorize the slides she posts on WebCT. She has cute ways of describing concepts in ways anyone can understand. Material is difficult but tests arent.
Good teacher who truly wants to see her students do well. Her Organic & Biochem subject material is hard (I'm a CE major) but if you put in the time & effort you should do okay. Explains things fairly well and encourages questions anytime you get confused. I would recommend her, she post lectures to webct so you don't have to take notes.
Very confusing, told the class that the book was wrong and she was right. Every one of the test had at least 2 mistakes which meant there was no right answer for the questions. Could not calculate the math for this class. Definitely take a different teacher if possible!
she's very easy to understand. pretty helpful. a pretty cool cat
Took CHE 1003 twice because I failed it the first time but i realized i was just being lazy. Once you really listen to her, she's not so bad. She's funny and tries to relate most material to cute real-life situations. Lots of homework, semi-easy tests & she replaces your worst test grade.
She is a pretty good teacher. The tests were much more difficult than the material she covered in lecture and some of the questions were worded weird. If you have the time, do the questions at the back of the book.
average teacher pretty clear speaker, watch out for fer test she sometimes riquires multiple answers for a single question with telling you so
She is very helpful if you come to see her in her office hours. The tests aren't hard...they are just sometimes a little tricky (you just have to read them really carefully). There is plenty of extra credit offered (on homework and on the tests). Coming to class would be helpful, just because it's chemistry. This class isn't too bad. Just study.
she was the worst teacher i have ever had. she is not understanding and shes very rude, its her way or no way, she messed up bad this semester by giving us a higher level exam and when we told her about it she said we still could have done it. shes the worst, i suggest taking this class somewheere else cus you will hate it!!!!
umm she's allright.. it's one of those professors you have to take cause she's the only proffesor teaching the course READ at first its pretty easy she's always behind which sucks cause then at the end its REALLY HARD material i got an 88,68,37! on my tests well yea...
She was the only professor available. She's not TERRIBLE. but you better enjoy chemistry or this class will be so boring. She uses homework online. Her lectures are really boring. Test are conceptual. They are pretty hard. GOOD LUCK
She's gotten better over the years. She gives lots of examples and is an animated lecturer. The ones that fail are those that never go to class or ask for help and the prof is not to blame for a student's own incompetence. Book not mandatory. Her lectures/powerpoints cover nearly all the test material. Studying required. This is college after all.
The teacher herself is nice and helpful, but her lecturing style is whack. You basically have to teach yourself the material before you come to class and she somehow thinks its a good idea to start teaching material for the second tests weeks before we even take the first! Average grades were a 60~ and she thought it was normal. Avoid at all costs
This teacher will RUIN your GPA. If you're gunning for a 4.0, and are taking a full load, do NOT take this class. I am a diligent, dedicated student, not a slacker by any means, but could barely manage a B in this class, while struggling to study like my life depended on it. Take a different professor for basic chem!
Only professor teaching course. VERY VERY fast pased! MUST go to class in less u are amazing in chem. lots of HW, test hard and CANNOT study the night before! Many students have to retake course.. if you fail first 2 test get out, it gets harder! you will ruin ur GPA if not! She is nice but doesnt take excuses! take at vista if possible!!!
If u are reading STOP. Dont take jus STOP class is extremely hard due to the fact that the tests are nothing like the Homework. If u fail second test it is pointless, third test is way harder unless you love chem.
this is an awful class. she teaches one thing, tests another. this is supposed to be basic stuff for people who are NOT majors, therefore chem is NOT their life. unfortunately, chem IS her life, so it'll be yours too or you'll fail. her fail rate is something like 40%. DON'T TAKE HER! AWFUL!!!!!!!!
Professor Thomas isn't that bad, but her tests have tricky questions. Her lectures can be unclear sometimes and she hardly ever uses the book. She has her own powerpoints. Homework is online. Basic chem is pretty much an easy class if you study for tests and do the homework. The only thing I hated was the tricky questions on her tests.
HORRIBLE! I studied so hard for her test and still failed. I went to tutoring and everything. She teaches one thing then tries to screw you up on the test with super hard questions.Half of the people in my chem lab are retaking the class again. Take chem at a community college not with her..its not worth ur time or money.
i liked her teaching style, but it is just a tough class. i struggled all the way up into the final. however, i went into the final with a D and came out of the class with a B, so its not impossible. just be ready to work! if you go to class, practice continuously, and go to SI then you should come out of it with a decent grade for a chem class.
To those who are LAZY like me. IF you want an A or a B in her class, you MUST GO TO CLASS. he lectures are somewhat entertaining, but her math skills are rusty which can really throw you off. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE HOMEWORK. HOMEWORK is the KEY to success in that class. STUDY for the test ATLEAST 4 days PRIOR. to make an A stay ontop of everything.
AWFUL prof. I had a 4.0 going into this class.. yep, that's gone. teaches a totally different subject than what is on the test. DO NOT TAKE HER. i studied the reviews and homework and when i went to her office she acted as if i was just plain dumb. did not want to help at all. this class was AWFUL!
She's a great professor and I enjoyed her class. I attended class every so often, but attend everyday so you don't get lost. If you keep it up, you'll do great! I had an A in there even though I skipped maybe 3-5 classes? So, just do the hmk and study really hard for tests!
Professor Thomas is not bad. She is tough, but fair. If you do not put effort into her class, you will fail. As long as you do the online homework, read the textbook, and go to her office hours for questions, you will do fine. I am not good at chemistry by any means, but it is not impossible to pass as long as you are a dedicated student.
This is college, not that joke you were herded to for 4 years. Work is required on your part to EARN your degree. Given the relative difficulty of subject matter, Professor Thomas has been my best professor so far (30+ hrs). Read prior to the lecture, attend class on a regular basis, and do your homework. Visit SI as needed, and you should do fine.
Not a very good teacher. Homework seemed to be a random assortment of questions from the chapters even though some of it we had never talked about it in class and they weren't even on the tests. She's very impatient if you ask her questions outside of class.
Alright teacher. Teaches fast. You would need to buy this online HW that is required for class. Make sure you do that homework early because theres a lot of em. During the finals there was many empty seats, probably cuz alot of students dropped the class. Overall, u shouldn't take Basic Chem unless its a requirement for ur major.
The material may be difficult but the teacher is not. I personally had no problem with it but if you struggle, SI should fix most your probs, if not, there's more tutoring services and the prof herself. Most people get fed up with the system and scapegoat the teacher. Honestly a little effort and time is the key.
I learned nothing in this class. Her lectures have NOTHING to do with what is going to be on the test. She likes to talk about her kids and gay marriage in hopes it creates an analogy to chemistry. It doesn't. It sucks she's the only Allied health chem professor. Because She's hard. You will probably get a d, if not fail.
The first test she quoted only 4 people made A/B's there were no C's and Everyone else failed! When I talked to her, she said she uses 6 different books for the test. In class when working the problems out, students corrected her daily mistakes, therefore I could not learn. SEVERAL people dropped her class. No respect for non bio majors. You choose
Not for the weak! You must study. See if you can find old tests to study with. The ?s are similar but not same but that helped out. Office hours are a must for ?s. This is memory work mostly but conceptual as well. Do online hmwk ahead of time or you won't have ample time to do it. Dbl check your test. I had a mistake on all of them. She is sweet.
Entertaining teacher, loves to help, goes on tangents often, and honestly chemistry doesn't come to everyone so easily. Do her homework ahead of time, or you're screwed, get all the help you can when you need it, there's an SI and the Q-Lab. Don't be afraid to go to her for help, and study a lot, the tests aren't super easy!
THIS LADY IS HORRIBLE. TAKE HER AT YOUR OWN RISK! TEST ARE EXTREMELY HARD & SHE DOESN'T TEACH ANYTHING!
Good chem professor willing to work with you. Tests can be tricky. take advantage of SI, overall I would recommend taking her.
Teacher is very difficult. She assumes that the class has a good knowledge of the basics, which if you don't, hurts you badly. She moves through things very fast so take good notes and do a lot of home studying.I would not suggest this teacher to someone who does not excel at science. My class of 300 has been cut in half and we still have test & final.
If you are looking for an easy A, look somewhere else. She is hard and hands out quizzes like candy.
CLASS IS SO HARD! DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU AREN'T ALREADY GOOD AT CHEMISTRY! She is hard to follow and moves on very quickly. She assumes everyone is already knowledgeable in chem and if you aren't and don't want to study about 6 to 10 hrs a week on this class, DO NOT TAKE HER! HER CLASS IS HARD!
Seriously, ignore every negative comment on here about her. Professor Thomas is my favorite professor so far! Chemistry is a difficult subject but as long as you do your OWL homework, attend class and read the text book you will make an A. Her lectures are entertaining and the tests are straight forward. I recommend!
Professor Thomas assigns a lot of homework online, which can be quite time consuming. Sometimes, she gives pop quizzes, which had great effect on my grade because I did know the material. Her tests are hard, and she writes them to the point you don't understand it. I ended up dropping this class.
Please just ignore all of the negative comments about her. If you're willing to show up for class, do your assignments, and study for exams you will do just fine, if you're not, don't bother. She's tough but fair, and provides you with everything you need to do well. She is one of the best professors I have had so far, and I loved her class.
Welll....You must earn your grade in this class..practice, Practice. Online homework. Her office hour is there so take advantage. Attend class regularly bc there are pop quizzes.
If you miss one class and are not very knowledgeable in chemistry you will got confused and get behind. I understood the material, but when it came to the test she put things on there that we hardly even covered in class. She gives 10 pop quizes! so if you want to take this class study ALOT!!!DO NOT take this class if it is not required for you!
This class is difficult, but this is college.. You will have to read the chapters before class and study for many hours in order to make an A. However, she does replace one test grade with part of the final. She gives pop quizes for attendance and she assignes homework online. The class is managable.
This professor must be on drugs! the class is ridiculously hard. The final exam is unreal. DO NOT take this professor!!!!
Her lectures are hard, and the course is too face paced to fully grasp the material. I feel as if the homework did not relate much to the test work. Aside from that, your grade in the class is based only on tests and 10% hw. Who has a class that's only based on tests. It's hard and I feel as if she wasn't helpful.
Attendance is not necessary but she has pop quizzes every week that are 10% of your overall grade. Her test are hard. She didn't teach me anything. I learned everything from the book & student study groups. The homework is nothing like the test. DO NOT TAKE HER unless you are only taking chemistry & can give all your time to this class!!!
I took her class as a 10 week summer class and it was a mistake. She spends a lot of time talking about how she needs to rush her class and leaves a lot of hw. Her tests are A LOT harder than the easy hw she leaves which I am pretty sure she has never seen herself since it's all online and on two different websites.
This professor is HARD and terrible. She is too fast paced in class. You have to go to class to try and understand the material. There is too much homework online and it takes alot of time. I have to take this class for my major but do NOT recommend her.
She tries her best to make analogies that simplify the concepts, but they are not very effective. She covers the information well enough and I fully expect to be making an A. If you struggle with this class, consider changing your major.
I'm not going to sugar coat this, Dr. Thomas is probably the most difficult teacher I have ever had. This class is required for any nursing majors, and unfortunately she is the only professor who teaches this class. Very hard to keep up and her analogies are weird, but I suggest always read and attend SI sessions and Q Lab!
Her Basic Chemistry class is hard! I attended class every day, did the homework, the Q-LABS, studied for the exam, etc. & I still had to drop the course before the end of fall semester. Her way of teaching makes it hard for students to understand the material but she helped students when they asked her for it. I would recommend taking someone else.
Professor Thomas isn't that bad of a professor. Chemistry in general is just really hard. She uses a lot of examples in her lecture and goes at a good pace to where her students can understand. She's pretty funny too!
One person commented that "you have to go to class to understand the material" is very true of this her Allied Health class but you should expect that for any university class, or rethink the whole college thing. Professor Thomas is nice, intelligent, and helpful. She teaches info we should know before being health professionals and teaches it well
I took high school chemistry seven years ago. This class was great and easy. I never studied for exams, the homework was light (which prepared you for tests) and I attended all the lectures. Dr. Thomas is a great professor, if you take her, pay attention. You're on your own kid, put the time if you don't understand.
This class is just teach yourself pretty much. I went to class everyday and she was so unclear. She doesnt email you back ever. But if you study hard it is very possible to make a B I never worked so hard in a class in my life.
Too hard!! She doesnt explain things well in class, she goes by quick and you really have to study! the test aren't so bad but she's not that bad of a teacher. She just goes by stuff really quick and expects you to practice at home.
Shes a horrible professor no help at all cant teach dont post powerpoints just plain bad overall I had to drop or I wouldove failed do not take. I repeat do not take.
Slackers will not do well in her class. I took her for 1073, got a B. Now I have her for 1003 and expect to make an A. She is interesting and a good professor, really loves chemistry. Go to class, study, go to SI.
Very difficult and confusing professor, fast paced in class. Hard to hear her lecture from the back of the classroom. I felt like I was a confused and lost deer the entire semester instead of one of her students, and the online homework barely had anything to do with the exams. This ended up being the first course I ever dropped. DON'T TAKE HER.
This is class is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I went to every single class and the SIs on top of that and still BARELY pulled through with a B. She is the only professor that teaches this course, so if you can take something else do because this class will probably take your soul. She's a nice lady.. just too hard of a course.
I am usually an A student, but I had to drop this class (my first drop ever). I tried my absolute best to do well, but it didn't work. If you are not a chemistry person, you might have a difficult time and you must dedicate your life to this course. Thomas is nice, but I do not recommend her even though she is the only professor that teaches this.
She is really not that bad of a teacher. She is very relatable and goofy (easy to like). Make sure to pay attention and take notes, she talks kind of fast and moves quickly through the chapters. She offers a bunch of extra credit on each homework assignment just make sure you do them. STUDYYYYY cannot stress this enough! good luck!
Hardest class I've ever taken, by far. She is an intelligent woman, no doubt. However, this class demands WAY too much of my studying time but there is honestly no other way around it. Very little help given and she is quite vague with projects. Online homework is usually irrelevant to in class assignments. Overall, a terrible experience.
I have definitely been enjoying my experience in her Basic Chem class, 1073. I am a freshman and was intimidated to take my first somewhat difficult science class. She is hilarious and keeps me interested throughout class. Her class requires a lot of attentions, but it is interesting, and if you see her in office hours, she will help you! Take her!
She definitely was a hard professor. Goes through topics really fast, hard to catch on. Tests are pretty difficult. I would NOT recommend this class to a non-biology major. I DO HAVE THE BOOK if interested.
professor Thomas is awesome, almost too generous with extra credit, and does too much for the slackers in her class. Dont expect an A if your not going to study
The lecture is interesting enough, she's a funny lady.BUT she is sporadic in her teaching & hw assign. Also, she takes notes down as soon as the test is over, & even then some are "board only" so you can't make it up. Hw is easy, tests are harder than hw. Reviews and hw that "were going to be up by _" were not always put up. Esp @ the end of semest
Professor Thomas is a great Chemistry professor, she is obviously very knowledgeable and has a great way of making the subject however she can be very unorganized. Test reviews were very unhelpful and rarely posted on time and she will not return your emails. Lastly the book we used(Hein-Arena) was awful. Some of our books had3 missing chapters.
Pros: She was nice and knowledgeable. Made fun analogies to help better understand the material. Replaces 1 bad exam grade. Cons: Highly unorganized, reviews weren't posted in time, hw didn't always correspond with lecture. If you figure out the methods to her madness, then you can definitely pass. STUDY STUDY STUDY!! Textbook wasn't really used.
Smart and nice lady, but does not know how to teach a hard subject to students that are there because they couldn't pass the chemistry placement exam! She teaches the class like its regular chemistry
I thought I would fail this class, but Thomas is the best professor to take for Chemistry. She explains things really well, doesn't word the tests too hard, and allows a lot of extra credit on homework. Get your stuff together and you've got an A.
Professor Thomas can be hard but if you have any questions you just have to ask her or go to her office hours. Yes you do have to study and homework is online. She repeatedly states that she responds to emails and if she doesn't respond she didn't get it. She teaches fast too but there's a lot she has to cover for the course.
She is a very good professor. Gives very good examples and goes over everything very detailed. The class is difficult, that is not her fault. Would highly recommend taking her class!
If you do not like doing HW this is not the class for you. HW is super easy but MANDATORY if you want to pass her class. Test aren't too bad but I highly recommend going to class. Chem is a hard class but she is not a bad teacher. Likes to make funny comparisons of problems to help you remember. Pretty understanding teacher.
First off, CHEM IS NOT EASY!!!! So saying that she is a bad prof, is a LIE!! She is the nicest lady and is always willing to help. Heck the hw will bump you up a letter grade if you do it, and do good on it. Its hard to do bad on the hw. Class is easyish if pay attention and attend class and SI. Super sweet prof!! Don't listen to the lies!!
Thomas is an awesome teacher! She explains everything so well and makes us understand things in simpler ways. However, I would advise not to take a class with her only because of the Q assignments. They're so complicated and they're worth 20% of your grade. So, unless you don't mind having a hard Q class, don't take her.
Chemistry is hard. The Q assignments are harder. Don't take the Q course. If you take this class, you can't because you'll fall behind. There is lots of memorization. Lots of online homework. She's a good teacher though.
This class is very easy if you show up on time to her class and listen to her lectures and the example problems in class are very similar to the test questions so pay attention. The Q assignments are annoying however
Ms. Thomas is such a great professor! Very clear, understanding, and funny. The homework helped me for the exams. Her exams are fair and not too bad. She cares for her students as people rather than just students. She gives life examples which makes it understandable and cool! She makes class so enjoyable! Definitely take Ms. Thomas if you can!
Susan is a nice lady very understanding. If you are looking for an easy A go major in Art or Kinesiology. You have to be a jackass not to get 100 in HW they are unlimited attempts until you are satisfied. And for those who love her good luck on you path as for the haters have a glass of organic solvent on me.
Professor Thomas is THE BEST! I was a little worried about taking her class because of the reviews, and my advisor told me that most students dropped her class because it was difficult. If you attend class and do the homework (easy 100) you will definitely succeed. Do not be fooled by others, she makes the class as easy as it can be.
She's pretty cool and funny. The class is fairly easy depending on whether you took chemistry in high school or not. Read the book and go over her slides and you will be fine. I definitely recommend this class. Professor Thomas kept it interesting and I loved that class.
Dr. Thomas is so nice! She will go above and beyond to help you out! She gives you a free 100 just for doing your homework (which is super easy). Chem is a hard subject so if you want to not to any work, pick a different class. Do not listen to the advisors, its not as scary as they make it out to sound!
SMH. What a waste of time and money. She thinks we are still in middle school. I doubt this class has helped me be prepared for General Chemistry.
She is one of the best professors I have had at UTSA. She makes great analogies for every concept and really tries to provide a strong base for Gen Chem I. You will not do well if you do not go to class or study. She provides study guides for the tests. Homework is an easy 100.
No tags. I was enrolled in Gen Chem but she is so confusing I had to switch sections and it has made a life of a difference. Avoid!
The Chemistry Department at UTSA leaves much to be desired and she is no exception. Get a tutor, or better yet, take it at a community college.
Don't listen to any of these bad reviews. She is the most amazing professor at UTSA hands down. She is extremely helpful in person or over email. Her lectures are clear cut and she does an excellent job of explaining the material. If you are taking her for a lower level Chem she gives you an awesome foundation for future classes. Such a sweet lady
Test are VERY tough. Lectures are somewhat helpful, probably best. Gives some grades based on attendance
I love Dr. Thomas! The material itself (Chemistry) is tough irregardless! Dr. Thomas is the best teacher for Chem. If you keep up with the material from the beginning and go to all the study sessions and do the homework you're good!
So first off, Chem is hard, so any professor you take it with, it is going to be hard, but Professor Thomas is willing to help, she makes cute analogies in class to help you remember, and if you do the HW she will help you out in the end. Go to SI and do not be afraid to ask questions or go to her office hours. Very helpful!!
Basic chem with Thomas was a good start to chemistry at UTSA. She offers extra points onto tests for clicker questions, and there are SI sessions that are very helpful. I don't really use the book, but it is handy in some cases. For the most part, she gives lots of real life examples and relates problems to things relevant to our generation.
Attendance wasn't mandatory however she did do iClicker questions every once in a while that counted towards your grade. You do need to study for the tests and you need to make sure you understand the material. I liked her because she made the material easy to understand by using analogies. 5 tests including final, some online homework, iClicker.
Expectations are ridiculous, 5 hours worth of work every week. I taught myself everything from the textbook and YouTube- it's impossible to learn from her fast-paced, far-fetched analogy-filled lectures. Expect to put forth A LOT of effort in this class, and still come out with a B.. She makes exams tricky and is very short when you ask for help.
She goes over exactly what you need to know for the test in her lectures. Her final is all of your tests that you took in the semester stapled together, so if you study those you're golden. You actually learn chem with her and she is always willing to help you. Do your homework and go to class and theres your A. Amazing professor.
Loved her class! She's very clear in what she needs you to know. What's on the test we cover in class! She gives lots of examples. Tests are multiple choice and workout problems so make sure you study and look over the bookPPTs. Extra credit for IClicker questions and HW. Bring Calculator! You'll need it all semester! She's funny and sweet!
She's super awesome and the class is easy to understand.
She is very nice and sweet. She is funny and likes to make analogies that we can relate to in order to understand what she's teaching. She can sometimes make small mistakes during lectures and sometimes on tests, but not that many to be annoying. If you go to her during her office hours she will help you. There are Iclicker questions every day
Chemistry isn't easy to learn, Thomas makes it easier with real life examples, personal stories, and jokes. She tries to be funny, it works sometimes. Attending class isn't mandatory but recommended. A lot of what she does in class is on the test, and so are some of the homework problems. The homework grades really bring your grade up, do it!!!
She's not that bad. She's a nice lady and chem is kind of tough, just do the hw and you'll be fine.
Don't believe the negative comments. She really cares about her students. Yeah there is alot of homework, but it is helpful. Always available in office hour or after class. Made me love coming to chemistry class- didn't think I would. I love the real world examples.
Dr. Thomas is honestly the best chem teacher I'll ever have. Yes, chemistry is tough to learn and she gives homework, but for YOUR benefit. It boosts you a letter grade if you complete it, and you have infinite tries! She's always available if you're struggling, happy to help. I would love most definitely take her again. Amazing honestly.
I loved Professor Thomas, she is a sweet lady who really knew her chemistry. She makes lectures interesting and uses a lot of real life examples to help you understand the concept better. She does give a lot of homework but it is only for your own benefit. Prepare to memorize the periodic table!
Professor Thomas is a really cool person! She's very down to earth and the examples she gives in class help a lot! However, the class itself is very hard. You have to work for your grade. I highly recommend taking this class when you have a light course load. Do not take it along with Anatomy, Physiology and those labs. YOU WILL HAVE NO LIFE.
Super nice lady, horrible class. This is not her fault, it's the material. Hours and hours of homework, and the tests are really hard. She does help you in the end as long as you do your homework and get a good grade in the lab. Do not take this class with a full course load or you will really struggle.
Pretty basic class. She is very helpful and makes sure to drive home what she wants you to know.
She doesn't seem to know what she's talking about and rambles about random things. Not very student friendly.
She isn't a horrible professor but she is really hard. Her tests are very hard and she makes that very clear. One bad thing is you don't exactly know your grade until the end. She does relate the material to interesting things to try to help you remember and does provide a review which is a plus. Honestly, I wouldn't take her.
If I could pick one teacher for Basic Chem it would have to be Thomas. Keeps her office hours open on monday and wednesday and helps you with literally anything you need help with. Make sure you study and do practice problems to learn the material.
Dr. Thomas is a very helpful professor who can get carried away at times during lectures. Her tests arent too difficult but you will still need to study. She is almost always there to help. Would Take again
Worst Professor I have ever had. Absolutely terrible at explaining. Relates everything to her personal life which helps no one. It was just terrible taking her class. I completely regret taking her. Hated her curve grade system. In class she makes MULTIPLE mistakes but expects the students not to miss a step. She's just awful.
I think the teacher isn't necessary horrible, but the content itself is hard. She tries to give examples in hopes to help the class, but it just gets more confusing. The tests seem easy, but when I got my grade back, I was shocked haha. You have to study hardcore to get an A. If you get an A without studying, you're probably just a Chem Wiz.
She is a very nice lady, who is there for you to help you if you need it. But, if you want a for sure A this is not the class. Had to work really hard for the A in a class that isn't supposed to be that tough. If you can take a different teacher do it, if you can't having her won't be the end of the world. Study, study and practice, practice.
If you go to her office hours, she will give you extra practice for the exam. She does iclickers in class so be sure to attend. She posts a review before every exam and as long as you know the material on it you should be prepared. Not a hard class if you put in the effort.
Do the extra credit she gives it truly helps of the tests which are not hard as long as you study. Don't skip class you need the notes. She is a nice lady and wants her students to learn. I did not need the textbook at all didn't even buy it.
Thomas is a fun and intelligent professor. Gives great real life examples for chemistry concepts. Don't be afraid to if you did not understand, she will try to explain it as simple as possible. She isn't the easiest, but she will prepare the heck out of you for Gen Chem 1. Highly recommended for students in the sciences.
Tests are harder then what you learn in class. Examples and iclicker problems make you think youll do good on the test, but not really. I would suggest studying the homework and online practice problems if you really want extra practice for the test.
Professor Thomas is a wonderful teacher! She loves chemistry but understands that most of us hate it, so she does everything she can to explain things in a way that we be able to learn them effectively. She's so nice and funny that she made my mornings worth waking up and going to school for. Go to class to get your attendance points. Easy tests!
Professor Thomas is a very caring lady and realizes not everyone likes or is good at chemistry. She does her best to explain in a way that you will understand but she wants you to know material not just memorize (its too much to memorize anyways). Tests were challenging but if you put the effort in your grade will reflect it!
not very hard at all. just do the homework and do practice problems. her tests aren't very tricky or dense. shes a nice lady but she rambles on about stuff that doesn't really connect with the lecture.
Dr. Thomas is an amazing chemistry professor! Dr. Thomas knows her stuff, her father was a synthetic organic chemist and she was raised learning the material. She has clicker questions every class that count for attendance and all quizzes are online and extra credit, if you do them all she'll probably bump you up a letter grade! Favorite prof!
Dr. Thomas is a good professor to have. She is very helpful with giving out hints and tips on how to solve problems or remember concepts. Pay attention to deadlines, iclicker quizzes every day. If you're having problems in the course, go to SI sessions or the tutor center. Make sure to look at review sheets notes and lectures. HW inline with quizs
Besides Professor Thomas's extensive use of family analogies to describe atomic/molecular behavior, the thing I hated the most was that although she should have been preparing us at a level to take the ACS chemistry exam, she moved extremely slow and explained concepts badly. Not good unless you're hoping to get a C in the class.
Amazing professor. The material is hard, it's chemistry... but if you actually take the time to study the material the class will be an easy A. Don't listen to all the bed reviews. Most students who take this course are freshman and don't understand the concept of studying.
Terrible, absolutely terrible. Unless you know everything about everyone in her family tree you won't understand. She relates everything back to her personal life which works for her I guess, but not us confused students.
Dr. Thomas was a great chem professor, my favorite thing about her lectures is she loves to use analogies to make the material easier to understand. I fully understood all the mathematical concepts, not so much the theoretical however. My only complaint is she has a lot of homework assignments with a lot of varying due dates rather than a fixed day
she just loovves waiting for the last possible day to upload about 10 homework assignments! its great, i love having to take 3 days off to just complete all of her work!! its just sooo lovely. lovely professor! i have no complaints whatsoever!! couldn't have asked for a more organized and professional instructor! shes always on time to class too!!
HARDDDDDDD!!! does not explain things clearly and uses weird analogies which make no sense. My TA taught my chem better than she did. DONT TAKE IF YOU CAN AVOID (sorry nursing majors were stuck with her)
you can tell she has a passion for chemistry, i enjoyed listening to her examples when explaining things. really enjoyed going to this class every day.
she sucks, her lectures are pointless, her exams had things she never mentioned in class or in her power point. Chemistry isn't easy and I feel like she made it harder for us to understand. She is all over the place and unorganized.
I would agree that she made things more complicated tbh, my TA helped me understand concepts way better. She took forever to give back tests. I was scared I wasnt gonna pass but she came through and rounded up to a C so bless but she's chill overall I think if you study 10 hours everyday its definitely manageable to get a good grade.
I've been the class for 12 days and she has assigned so much homework.... It's so much homework that you can not learn the material you just have to try your best to complete the homework and hope you remember the work you're going over. You can't sum a chemistry class up in 50 mins. It's not enough time. This class freaking suck, prepare to work.
Acts like Chemistry is the only class you're taking, even after acknowledging most of her students aren't Chem majors. Lecture long enough to grasp things the way she expects you to. Insane amount of homework, usually added a few nights before it's due so you're scrambling to get it done. I'm a junior and this is the hardest class I've ever taken.
i logged into blackboard to 39 notifications of her uploading homework that we due in one or two days over things we haven't even covered in class or lab yet. :)
Most terrible professor I have ever encountered. She spends 30 minutes of every lecture trying to figure out what she did wrong on a problem. Everything she says will be on the tests is everything that is not on the tests. Beware. Literally.
Her resources are garbage. Lectures full of anecdotes about her family that don't teach the information at all. Homework only covers about half of what is on the test. Honestly she puts tests as 60% of the grade but prepares you as if they were 10% or something. To do well you need a study group or something ELSE because she will NOT prepare you.
She was really fun to eventhough it was an 8 am class. She comes up with really fun personal stories trying to connect to the material, which makes the class a lot more engaging. She also takes the time to go over practice problems in class, letting people try to answer and then going through the solution clearly. Really recommend her.
she is pretty terrible at teaching, although you can tell she is passionate about chemistry. She loves to relate everything back to her family which can confuse people, and likes to give iClicker questions without warning. She also messes up on more than half of her examples in class, takes forever to grade tests, and puts homework up randomly.
I have learned more about her family than I have Chemistry. She relates all her Chemistry to her family in weird analogies that hardly anyone gets. She's a really tough grade ENTIRE question is wrong no partial credit even if your a little off. Always messing up on example questions. Just take prof GOLD.
Don't take her class if you don't have to. She is unorganized, always behind on lectures but expect you to know what you're doing. Lots of homework. Test are mostly fill in vs multiple choice. Digresses a lot in her lectures. Always comparing us to her kids.
Prof Thomas gives out a ton of homework. Shes a ridiculously tough grader. Took her for basic chem and it was definitely a mistake. She easily gets side tracked.
Thomas is fair. She makes you work for your grades, but she really prepared me for gen chem. Clicker questions forced me to keep up with lecture material. If you want to realky learn the material take Thomas. If you go to class and pay attention she practically gives you all the exam questions in lecture.
Dr. Thomas expects a lot of her students but is kind and understanding at the same time. Chemistry is a difficult subject even when the professor is great, however. It requires practice and homework. She is available most days of the week and works hard to make sure the class thoroughly understands the material. You will be prepared for future chem
Chemistry is a tough subject, so don't take this class if you plan to skip a lot and not do the homework. If you actually go to class, study outside of class, and do your homework, you will do fine. As for Professor Thomas, her tests are HARD, but she is a kind lady who is generally very understanding.
Take Dr. Thomas, she's uses great nerd humor. She makes you work for the grade, but in the end it pays off. If you go to class and do the homework you have it made. No surprises on the exam, and she gives extra credit. I have been more prepared for Gen Chem than most of my friends. She cares about her students and will help you if you ask.
Ok, the begining of semester was HARD, but it has gotten better. If you work hard and keep up with the homework this class is doable and almost fun. Once you get used to Dr. Thomas's weird analogies, some of them actually work and I remember some of this stuff. I still hate chemistry, but I will say I am learning alot. She's not so bad after all
Wow. She is not the professor you would want for a CHE class (at least). She basically expects you to know everything and she teaches things so fast so it's hard to catch on especially if you don't like converting atoms to moles. Her tests are very hard and long. If you don't memorize the periodic table 1-84 before the 2nd test then you're screwed.
Great proff, one of my favorites. Take her, she cares.
Dr. Thomas was pretty hard in the beginning of the semester, but as you get used to her teaching style the class becomes like second nature. The level of difficulty is moderate for an intro chem class compared to others on the campus, but it prepares you for the chemistry classes down the line.
Professor Thomas's tests are pretty hard and she gives a lot of homework. Her lectures aren't easy to follow and the examples she gives sometimes don't even make sense. I took her for basic chem and it was probably a terrible idea. My advice is to not take her if you don't have too.
Dr. Thomas is all unorganized in lecture and rambles about everything else for 15 min even before an exam. She falls behind on schedule and messes up on examples and forgets to post so many things. Ochem exams are open ended and biochem are multiple choice. Read the book esp for ochem. Ton's of HW but many are extra credit. Good luck nursing majors
Class is very test driven. Probably one of the hardest professors I've ever had. People aren't lying that she is unorganized although she is passionate. Her lectures are vague and I was constantly going to her office to understand what she was teaching. Her test are off from the lectures and there are random questions we never even went over.
I say take this professor. The first test was hard only because of units, but if she sees progress she boosts your grades. I slacked on homework which I dont recommend doing, attended every class which is graded, and ended up with a B. I definitely could have done more to get an A, Im personally forgetful. Unless you suck at math youll do fine.
GO TO THE SI SESSIONS. They may not seem relevant all the time, but the extra practice and just getting into the zone more often can really help you out. Most people in my class hated her, but Im not sure why. Not the hardest class Ive taken, but lots of studying needed. DO ALL OF THE EXTRA CREDIT. Thats how I got an A.
ORGANIC CHEM DOESNT GET AN SI LEADER!! due to "not many people failing" but by the half way mark and on of the semester more than half your class will have dropped. good luck...
Professor Thomas was great, her lectures were helpful and has prepared me very well for Gen Chem I. I am so glad I had her. I barely passed with a C but she truly does prepare you for future classes. This is not an easy class! Be prepared to do lots of practice problems in class. Study before exams, and you will be okay.
Prof. Thomas is my favorite professor! I didnt even know there was a book until the end of the semester when she mentioned it. If you listen& pay attention to her lectures you dont need to study outside of class! Her lectures are very relatable& easy to understand and there are no surprises on the test! TONS of hw though, I did maybe half of it
Get ready to teach yourself because her lectures always tend to go off topic. If it weren't for the attendance, i wouldn't have been going to class. She also gives ALOT of homework along with the lab. Sometimes if you email her she won't get back to you or it'll take a while for her to respond.
I LOVED Thomas. I had her for both my chem for allied, and my ochem/biochem class. She is in fact a very tough grader, and gives lots of homework, but that isn't something you should complain about. If you actually want to learn, than take her class. If you are here just to get a grade, than you will fail. If she sees effort she will help you out.
Thomas is a good professor and is willing to help and work with you. the class is hard and there is A LOT of work to do along with the lab if you're taking allied science. It is possible to get an A, but you have to truly earn it, study the slides, go to SI, and youtube helped me.
tests arent that hard but shes nit picky about grading details. Lots of HW more annoying than hard and shell extend deadlines just ask her. Lots of memorizing. Kind of fast pace. Her analogies kind of suck but I just tune them out. If you took chem recently before youll be fine, if not you might have to study more.
AMAZING!
DO NOT TAKE SUSAN! She will make your life miserable. Lots of homework, several exams that are mostly open-ended questions, packback, lab quizzes, lab reports, lab final, attendance etc! You have to teach yourself everything because learning from her is a joke. The entire class had a strong opinion about her. Oh and her analogies never worked!
Dr. Thomas has been the most difficult professor I have ever taken. Because this class also has a lab connected with it, I expected it to be a challenge but not this much of one. She assigns pointless homework in large amounts and the tests matter a lot in the long run. She is also hard to get ahold of if you need her on short notice. Good luck!
Professor Thomas had a powerpoint prepared for each class that are accessible outside of class. She does iClicker questions randomly on different days for attendance. She gives out a lot of unnecessary homework. To get an A, I recommend studying outside of class for at least an hour everyday. Lots of memorization so make a cheat sheet.
Chem 1004: She takes attendance with the iclicker. The class was overall easy, but her lectures are hard to follow. The exams are easy overall and she does give extra credit. She is easily available outside of class if you need help. All the Information needed on powerpoints Also took CHE1014 with her & was the hardest class I ever took.
Professor Thomas has a great soul, but not the greatest teaching soul.. If you really know how to WORK for your grade, then go ahead.. but I personally do not recommend. TOO MUCH HW and exams DO NOT correlate. In lecture, she talks a little too much about... well.. anything else besides chem.
Dr. Thomas is honestly an amazing woman and professor. Her class is hard but if you go to her personally she is more than happy to help and loves to get into depth with anything you have problems with. The homework she assigns is to HELP YOU because the class is hard and practice is the best way to study. Personally I loved her and the class.
I personally really liked her, I had Thomas for two semesters and eventually learned her ways. She makes you work for your grade but she does it in order to make sure you know your stuff. If you get to know her, she is really nice and really cares for your education. Her analogies aren't the best, but like I said, you learn her ways.
Tough, but you'll learn a lot
For the final, she gave us the review the DAY BEFORE the final. Other test she wouldnt even give a review and just said know everything we went over. She's allowed to make mistakes no problem, if you make a simple mistake, there goes your grade.
I enjoyed Thomas's lectures, they were helpful towards my understanding. Although there is lots of homework before exams and we have to do a lab report every week, there's also A LOT of extra credit. Does attendance through clicker questions, not a fan. Make sure to read the textbook, take notes, and understand the material to grind for that A.
I'm not really sure how Dr. Thomas has such bad reviews. She offered extra credit before the beginning of the course. There is no doubt work required to get an A but it's definitely not impossible. Her lectures really help make the materials easier to understand. I recommend her to anyone planning on taking gen chem or basic chem!!
Dr. Thomas is the best prof Ive ever had. She really does care about everyone of her students, if you have questions she will sit with you until you understand the concept Her class is very difficult, and she is very hard but you will come out actually knowing the material, Which is what a good prof actually does. Dont be intimidated she's amazing!
Dr. Thomas is an amazing person but her class is definitely one of the harder classes you will take. She's very sweet and always willing to help during her office hours or after class. This class is very challenging and although she is very helpful the class still remains extremely hard. She does try her best to make sure you learn the subject.
Dr. Thomas is a great professor! Her class is well structured and follows the same pattern. You read the chapter and then do the homework and take the quiz for each chapter. So the faster you learn how to manage your time on the work the better you'll do. You definitely have to work for your grade but she teaches well and is always open to help.
AMAZING- best Proff I have taken at this University. If you want to learn take Dr. Thomas
She really cares about you understanding and learning the material. She makes you work hard, but in the end it's worth it. Would definitely take her again.
I hated Chem until taking Dr. Thomas, she made me want to go to class. Loved how she related her class to real life.
She s challenging, but it is worth it. In Gen Chem 2, I am teaching my neighbors the basics thanks to Thomas. She makes you work and actually learn the material.
Love HER - if you can, take this PROFF!!
She is super nice and her class is fairly easy considering it's a chemistry class. She is very clear about what is on tests. She gives homeworks and learnsmarts that are easy 100's and boost your grade. There is also gives extra credit assignments through mcgraw hill and gives two per test. Im taking her again for the next level of chem.
Seriously abysmal lectures. Reads word for word from poorly developed power points. Gives no direction on what to study and tests over the most obscure material
It's a hard class, but it's my favorite this semester. Dr. Thomas makes the subject clear and understandable. Brings in everyday life examples. Take her if you can!
Dr. Thomas is a very nice lady and is always willing to help outside of class and in her office hours. She gives a review, but her tests are hard. She lectures fast and its hard to keep up. She tries to help students understand, but shes not very good at explaining. Overall, if you put in the work and study outside class you should secure a B
DON'T take Biochemistry with this horrible professor! Dr. Thomas has to be the worst professor at UTSA. I've dealt with tough professors but at least you learned something. She provides no guidance on anything, makes obscure exam questions, & lecture is pointless bc you have to teach yourself everything. She shouldn't be allowed to teach. 0 rating!
Expects you to know what she wants without telling you. You have to truly understand material, tests are hard. Proudly states she will fail the entire class if she has to. No extra credit. Does give points for correct methods. Wish another professor taught this course, worst than organic/physics. More than half the class from previous semesters.
Just know, it may be shocking, but organic chemesitry/biochemistry for allied health will NOT be easy! Thomas is wonderful in lecture and straightforward about what the tests will cover. She does exam replacements and extra credit at the end of the semester. She's great to meet with one on one. Labs are easy enough. Study and you will do fine!
Professor Thomas has a very straightforward mindset. Whatever she's thinking, it'll come out. She does provide us with the powerpoints, but basically needs to teach yourself. She is a tough grader and her way of grading is very confusing. You will not know exactly what grade you have in the class until the midterm and at the end of the semester.
She seems like a decent person. This class is very challenging but it is possible to pass. I gave her a 1 star because I felt that the information is skimmed over and not gone into detail for a class that needs to be broken down. I did not always feel confident about my tests. If you take her, I strongly recommend a tutor. That is how I passed.
DO NOT TAKE HER or you will suffer! The exams were nothing like in the review she gave. She rarely responds to emails. And do not expect to get A's in the exams even if you think you studied really well.
By far the most disorganized lecture + lab I have taken at UTSA by far. The lectures seem all right at first and once paired with the book questions seems like a good way to prepare for the exams, but then the exams would make you feel otherwise. She's really good at making you question your previous knowledge and your self worth.
Biochemistry is hard, you have to put in the work. Dr. Thomas is one of the most amazing profs I've had at UTSA! She truly cares and will make time for students who reach out. Her lectures are informative and interactive! Even when we went online, she made time for us and recorded every live lecture. Read, do practice problems, and ASK for help!
She is by far the worst professor I have taken at UTSA. Makes the most off the wall, non-funny, borderline inappropriate comments/examples. I have taken her 3 times and each time I'm reminded of why I hated her class and style of teaching. Everything is her way or no way, rarely makes amendments for students that need additional support.
Exams were nothing like the review. Would always skip important material in lecture. UTSA step it up, how is she the only chem professor.
Nice lady, but doesn't teach well. Took CHE 1004 and the lab, and I learned absolutely nothing. Her lectures did not help me, it was virtual, and every lecture was just her ranting. She gave us test reviews nothing like the exam, it was so bad only 3 people passed. She blamed us for the poor performance, when she didn't even teach. Don't recommend!
Shes very rude and not helpful. Basically imagine a Karen as a professor. She rambles on about things that arent important and can be very sarcastic and not in a good way. She expects WAY too much with her assignments and the exams can be different than the assignments/study materials given.
Terrible professor, lacks the ability to teach her students in any environment. She doesn't show any sympathy towards students in the current pandemic that we are going through. Does not extend deadlines. Her tests are completely unrelated to the content. She mostly talks about her life during lectures. It's a self taught course. Major attitude.
If youre thinking about taking her chem 1004 class dont. Tests are extremely hard since she doesnt teach at all. Countless of students have already dropped her class this semester cause of her incompetent teaching. Please dont waste your time and money on this class. Youre better off taking it at a community college.
Susan Thomas is one of the most impossible to please professors at UTSA. Constantly making inappropriate jokes during class, and has little sympathy for those who are struggling. Homework and lectures are almost nothing like the exams. May be different in person, but online she is horrid. If you need to take chem, take it at a community college.
This class would have been so much easier if Susan Thomas was more understanding and easier to communicate with. During the lectures, we would not learn anything that would be on the next exam. She would mostly talk about random things, her kids, and her own life. She does not follow her own syllabus. If you get this professor, please switch.
The WROST professor Ive ever had!! Doesnt teach well, test does not relate to the review. If you can please take this class a community college Im begging you.
Lectures require you to watch video beforehand otherwise they wont make any sense. You really have to teach yourself. Very disorganized changed directions for lab almost every day. Makes it so you have to score a 100 on quiz so if you fail test your grade wont drop that bad. Homework is online and can be tricky since its a program that grades you.
Getting an A is possible. Not helpful or accommodating at all. Labs make no sense and she will change the instructions at least 2x every assignment. Gives reviews; not helpful. I only learned by doing the hw. Gets lost during lectures and gets own problems wrong. Again, you can pass shes just NOT a good teacher and you will have to teach yourself.
Unclear grading criteria, lecture heavy but gets her own problems wrong, lots of scribble (Jackson Pollock painting). You end the zoom bewildered and hopeless. If Proctorio messes you up, she doesn't care. Susan please watch Tyler Dewitt on youtube for teaching tips & proof read the exams you write. Try to connect with teaching. I beg you.
I took her about 3 years ago for basic chemistry. I just want to come back and say she was one of the worst professors I ever took. I would say I am pretty good at chemistry, as I got an A in gen chem 1. So I was shocked when I ended the class with a C. If you have a chance to take another professor please do that for your own benefit.
Dr. Thomas goes out of her way to help anyone that wants it. Online is hard, but Dr. Thomas has met with me and 3 other students every week to help us through this class. She is amazing. She presents the material clearly, gives extra credit, gives extra practice and most, she CARES!
She messes up on her exams and says you have a set amount of time, when in reality she only gives you half the amount of time. She does not follow her syllabus and does not cover the material in the homework. She essentially reads her lectures from the book but doesn't explain much of anything. She does not really make sense even when communicating
ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PROFESSOR! She is always making mistakes on the quizzes and exams. She says she follows the syllabus but her syllabus was from an old semester and hasn't been updated. She blames everything on the students and ignores questions when students asks. A third of my class signed a petition to report her to the chair. DO NOT TAKE HER
Gives you plenty of homework to help learn the material. If you read and go to lectures and do homework you might be okay but study also . TEST ARE CURVED
If you want to spend a whole semester confused on grading scale, due dates and the material in the class then this is the professor for you. She spends a whole lecture on one problem which SHE is confused about the whole time and then expects you to move on to the next chapter in the next lecture. Poor communication skills and poor teaching skills.
Biochemistry is not an easy course at all. Dr. Thomas seems to emphasize that throughout the semester by overloading her students (up to 33 assignments due in a 2 week period) and agonizingly difficult tests. Despite the fact that we've reached out for help multiple times, she refuses to put in any work on her end to help her students. Do not take
She comes from a family of oraganic chemists and has grown up knowing chemistry. Therefore she does not know how to properly teach and expects students to know everything before they even take the course. You're not allowed to use formulas on tests and you basically have to memorize everything. This class ruined my GPA. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSES
Do not take her unless you absolutely have no choice. Her teaching style isn't effective. She talks about her family all the time and gets side tracked. Her exams aren't like the homework's or quizzes. No extra credit either, but she does drop the lowest test grade. She's very nice, but a horrible teacher in my opinion.
She does not review the homework at all, so she teaches and tests different than the material presented in the homework. She also likes to mix topics together on the exams, because she wants you to KNOW every process covered in the section. She also requires you to read ahead, and may not get to teaching you all the material.
You know someone is a bad teacher when all they inspire is hatred for the class they teach. I used to think chemisty was cool. Her teaching is so bad it makes me cry. She tries to get you to mess up on tests. Nothing she says makes sense. She often contradicts herself and our textbook.
she literally rambles and contradicts herself in lecture and contradicts the homework. only way to pass is to go to stars sessions bc she is dookie prof,, do notttttt take!
Lectures are awful. Assigns weekly quizzes and its either a 100 or a 0. Most people were going to other professors lectures just to pass. Avoid her if possible
I love this Proff! She follows the syllabus exactly Gives quizzes to help understand the material Always available for help during office hours Keeps on topic, follows the book. I learned alot!
Thomas is wonderful in lecture and straightforward about what the tests will cover. She does exam replacements and quizzes. She's great to meet with one on one. Study and you will do fine!
Professor Thomas makes the class harder than what it needs to be. She will not post her slides and moves rather quickly through the material. She expects you to read the relative chapters before coming to class . Apart from this she is an understanding professor and will give extra credit it you work on the Aleks topics assigned.
I absolutely loved professor Thomas. To get through this class, you'll have to stay on top of your homework and weekly quizzes. She goes quickly through the material, so you either have to read the chapter being discussed before the class or piece it all together after class (whichever works for you).
She honestly is not a good teacher, she moves too fast through the material and says irrelevant stuff that doesn't even help you with the exams, she doesn't respond to emails. Honestly just not good in general at teaching. Avoid her if possible.
I have her for my lab and lecture lab. She goes through her lecture so fast and doesn't let us ask questions. I have emailed her multiple times and have never gotten a response. One of those things being that I wasn't able to get an assignment video to work and showed proof and she didn't respond and gave me a 0. Stay away from her class!
Took for biochem. Lectures were awful. You learn more about different analogies than the topic you're learning. Get ready to teach yourself the material and move at a very fast pace
I JUST FOUND OUT SHE IS THE ONLY PROFESSOR TEACHING BIOCHEMISTRY 2. WHY DAWG? SHE IS SO NICE, BUT SHE SHOULD STICK TO ADVISING OR SOMETHING. BIOCHEM IS HARD ENOUGH, AND HAVING A TEACHER THAT DOES NOT HAVE A PASSION FOR IT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE. I AM SERIOUSLY ABOUT TO DROP OUT BECAUSE WHAT THE? DR LIU OR DR YOSHIMOTO NEEDS TO BE THE PROFESSOR!
She is helpful the material is just a lot. The exams are heavy on subject matter but she makes sure everyone does okay in the end. As long as you study you're good. If you are only going to lecture it is not enough, you need to get into the material. Just try and it'll all work out. If she's your dept chair she helps out so much.
Dr Thomas isn't terrible but she is tough. I disliked the short notice for some assignments, she was not teaching the same information from the book, and there is a lot that she does not cover. On a positive note she related all concepts to real life to help understand tough topics. She was also easy to talk to if you had any questions.
Dr. Thomas is hard but fair. Lectures well, cares about the students. If you have questions about material just ask her. Make sure to read the book before going to class or you'll be lost/behind. If you're struggling, there are tutoring sessions available.
Dr Thomas is inconsistent on the explanations. Doesn't make the understanding of lectures any better. Would usually talk about family and lacks any preparation to exams. It is difficult to prepare as she doesn't help set it up.
Thomas is inflexible and dismissive. She does not give enough time for students to answer daily attendance questions in lab lecture. When confronted about this, her attitude is consistently "Well, It's not my problem." Lectures are redundant and uninformative. Do not take her if at all possible. I dropped this course because of her last semester.
I like Thomas as a person, but not as a professor. She makes the class even harder than it should be. I had to learn from another student also taking the class, shoutout BRI!! Her lectures are all over the place and unorganized. You will be better off taking another professor that will actually teach and care for their students.
Dr. Thomas is very blunt with what she wants, she can be rude at times. She seems to know what she's talking about for gen chem 1 but she does often go into tangents about other random things that stem from a lesson. She is a decent professor for gen chem 1, but expect to use aleks to understand material.
The test for gen chem 2 were difficult and when I asked how to study, she said to just read the book and practice more. The subject itself was sort of difficult but her lack of communication about how to teach it made the subject THAT much harder. She is decent for lectures, but the exams are much harder than they need to be for this course.
This was the worst lab and lab lecture I have taken at UTSA as nothing was given ahead of time. The lab archive was unstructured and the procedures were hard to read. The mechanisms of the experiments were not explained well and you were expected write lab reports over a subject that she would not have taught you yet. She grades very harshly.
Very inconsistent on her teachings. A big waste of time on trying to deliver the main idea of the concept
The course was boring and didn't add any help to the labs set to happen. Also did not put any notes for students to follow and ensure that the concept given is accurate to what is expected in the lab
Unorganized & creates notes night before lecture, which she does not post after. Unfairly gave 2 sections an extension on lab report. Practical final was sprung onto us & moved two weeks in advance. Also notified late that we would be switching partners for the final. Lab data is time consuming and there are no instructions on how to do the math.
My Issue with this professor is that she goes on tangents trying to make an analogy for a concept in chemistry that made less sense than if she just explained the concept IMO. If you learn from analogies, then she might be great for you, just not for me. She was kind and would answer questions, standard CHE coursework, drops you after 4 absences.
The problem with this course was the lack of focus on the concepts. Although getting through practice problems may help, I wish we had a clear explanation of the foundation and concepts. The real life examples didn't really give much to this course.
In my opinion if you put in the work and go to class and office hours, you will do well. She answers all questions and will explain as long as she needs to to help you understand. Many people had a hard time in her class but if you want a good grade she is always available to answer questions.
Honestly, I was a little nervous to take Dr.Thomas' class because of all her bad ratings on here, but I loved her. She's a great professor, very nice, and if you're having trouble in her class I highly recommend going to her office hours. Yes, she does use a lot of analogies in her lectures, but personally, they helped me a lot on the tests.
AWFUL. This professor is tenured (BEWARE) and does not care if students pass or fail the course. I took her class and attended all of her office hours and tutoring where I was ignored, belittled, and not helped. She has no issue with failing students and often describes her purpose to "weed students out". She is not encouraging, nor respectful.
The professor doesn't care. The course heavily depends on Alec's. I went to tutoring and office hours and the lectures didn't match her test and Alec's made it more confusing. She recommended medical withdrawal after asking for an extension due to my father passing away the week of testing so that tells you everything about her character. Skip her!
This professor just talks and talks but never actually teaches ? I think she jut like it listen to herself sometimes lol. Attendance is mandatory via clicker but there's no point in going to her class since she's not going to teach anything.
Uses analogies that don't make sense, can't teach, cracks jokes and wastes class time. Makes you put your laptops down and you can't take notes.
Personally, I absolutely loved having Dr. Thomas as my Chem II Professor. However she does use humor and analogies in her lecture which for me were very helpful and insightful, though it isnt everyone's cup of tea. If you prefer a professor that does classic powerpoint lectures then Thomas isnt for you. However, I loved her class.
I personally really liked her and her lectures, I thought her analogies were very useful and was scared to take this class because of the poor ratings, but I really ended up loving her class. She is very sweet and funny and you can tell she cares a lot about her students and wants them to succeed.
I thought the analogies helped with how to think about concepts. Lectures primarily cover practice problems which help when doing thomework/quiz/exams. Exams weren't terribly difficult if you study. iClicker used and can help pad grade by 2%. Never went to office hours so not sure how she is but in class she's cool, didn't get condescending vibes
Avoid!!
Talks in circles, starts a point but never finishes it. Class was canceled, substitute proff or holiday half the time. She teaches good life lessons, good for advice or help with an assignment. Not the best at teaching new concepts without mistakes and over complication of the topic. She seems like she's going through something.
Chem 2 is hard but this is the best chemistry professor I have had at UTSA. She says some weird things in class that have nothing to do with chemistry but she is good at teaching chemistry. Take her if you don't want a professor who just reads off slides.
This professor was not the best she didn't actually teach, used so many analogies; that made things so confusing! Said that if your having to teach yourself, that means she doing her job lol ( we pay to be taught but ok)... Maybe just because I took her in the summer? I don't know either way teaching style is terrible.
She explains concepts really well, she does use analogies but they made sense to me. If you go to her TA's sessions it makes a difference in her class. I learned something different every class but that's just chem. She uses Aleks a lot.
Be prepared to teach yourself the material through ALEKS and the textbook.
Dr. Thomas is a great professor who teaches without powerpoint and by using real-life analogies and experiences to get her point across. There's 4 partial exams and 1 final worth 25% which is ACS standardized. Overall not as bad as people make her out to seem; just read the textbook chapters before class and do some aleks a day and you'll be okay.
Dr. Thomas uses a lot of analogies for her material, some may drift off of topic but overall they help. She does not read off of slides and gives you practice questions through your iclicker. She is VERY ALEKS heavy and is a good chunk of your grade. Be prepared always.
Please do not take this professor even if she's the last one. Wait for next semester and register for an actual good prof. She makes horrible analogies talking about herself and family all the time that is very confusing. She expects you to learn test material that she DOESNT cover during lecture. This is coming from a 3.9GP now a 3.7.
Biochemistry is already a hard course- do not take this professor if you want any ounce of sanity left. She makes wild "real life" analogies that are supposed to help. They don't. For the hydrophobic affect she compared it to the "KKK exterminating minorities". She has a reputation for being racist. She also is just bad at teaching. Avoid avoid!
Initially signed up for her biochem course. Super unclear about what will be on the exam and is a horrible lecturer, makes no sense during her lectures and veers away from what the topic is. Over complicates topics and will just confuse you didn't want to risk my grade taking her so I dropped her class two weeks in to take Renthal in the fall
Too much material for the pace that she goes at, we were supposed to cover 1 topic a lecture but that never happened,we always had to look up the material on our own. Does not stay on topic during lectures. Does curve the exams. Does do extra credit for HW. Overall not bad if you are okay with learning the material on your own.
The course load is incredibly heavy, with tons of homework (due dates were switched suddenly on these throughout the semester). Highly disorganized overall, bad lectures with many random analogies or tangents that were NOT helpful, and professor often seemed not to know what she was going to lecture on. DO NOT TAKE her if you can avoid it.
When I tell you this class was sooo bad. She is only option for biochem at UTSA. GPA was on a rise and about to be tanked. only other option for fall is completely full and everyone is waitlisting just to avoid her class. doesnt cover all material for tests, off topic and RACIST. the racial comments are all true. Tried to drop but no other options!
Please take literally anyone else but her. One of the worst professors I've ever had at UTSA. Her lectures make everything more confusing, not to mention her awful and out-of-pocket analogies. Does not drop any exams and takes forever to grade them. Contradicts herself with material on the test versus what we were taught in class. Save yourself.
Most unprofessional professor I have ever had. She is extremely disorganized and evidently does not know what she is teaching. She spends half the class on tangents that do not relate to the topic we are supposed to be learning about, she always posts test reviews late, she takes forever to grade tests, and she is wrong about basic information.
This professor appears to care by what she says but her actions show otherwise. Unprepared, poorly thought out resources (exam reviews, actual exams). Does not provide solid resources; you're left guessing what the exams will ask, which sucks in such a content heavy course. She has to curve a lot due to her own mistakes and poor teaching.
Professor Thomas is very fair and ensures that you are treated like an adult. Her lectures are where she tells you what is going to be on the exam and if she doesn't talk about it, then it isn't there so class is mandatory. The book is awful for BCH however as forementioned, just listen in class and take notes on what she talks about in the ppt.
Terrible in every aspect. Wastes lecture time rambling about topics that are not relevant. Misguides students on what to expect on exams via vague and inaccurate study guides. Assigns homework that is not relevant to what concepts will be covered on the exams. Barely answers emails. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Awful lecturer, doesn't actually teach during class. You will have to look for outside resources to learn the topics. Doesn't care at all about her students. 0/10, I hope the Chem Dept. will reevaluate her abilities and contributions to students/academia. Would NOT recommend taking her class.
Please listen to the reviews that say do NOT take her. Exams always had material that she said would not be on there. She posts assignments without announcements. please do not take her (I am NOT usually one to complain about a professor but she is the worst professor I have ever taken in undergrad).
This professor was the biggest head ache. She was never on top of grades, doesn't understand technology, and is extremely boring in lecture. She doesn't answer emails and doesn't listen to her students. I had an assignment that I missed one part of and suddenly I had a 25 on the paper? Makes no sense avoid her at all costs PLEASE.
