Very friendly and interesting.
I loved her. wish i was an english major. she's very good at working in historical stuff as well as crit.
She's great. Most helpful and she'll teach you how to write!
She is a very nice lady. Tests are half multiple choice and half essay. If you go to class and listen, the tests are not that bad. She does not take attendance, just so you know.
Dont take this teacher. She is very..very very boring. If you like to sleep in class. Take this one.
The class difficult and very boring.
SHE IS THE DEVIL DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER OPTION. She grades based on her opinion of your papers you write. She is not helpful and actually insults most of her students and any level of intelligence they thought they had. For the love of God and your GPA do not take this professor.
Tough for me and I'm an English major. Like the prof. just found test a bit difficult.
I loved her!! She's really funny. She really will take the time to help you, you just have to ask for it. Her instructions are very clear and she tells you exactly what she wants. But at the same she really makes you learn. She WANTS you to become a better writer. I learned a lot in this class.
OMG. She was a neat lady but she graded crappy. She would say one thing, forget what she said, then take off points from your paper. I did end up with a B but the I was sweating it the whole semester.

I really liked her as a person. I thought that she was funny and friendly. Her class wasn't too bad, but it was difficult to predict what she wanted. She did grade according a whole lot to her opinion (which was straight up WRONG sometimes), but if you were to complete an assignment a lil' bit early, she would show you how to correct it and get an A. You get lots of class time to work on stuff and she is lenient on due dates. I liked her, but didn't LOVE her.
"She grades based on her opinion of your papers you write." It's called grading your papers, brah. Great teacher, you'll learn a lot from either of her British Lit classes. Grades easy.
She is very unclear about her assignments. The actual paper with the assignment will have example topics etc and if you use a topic similar or even one she suggested in class it is unacceptable. She will state things in lecture and forget she stated them and take points off when she grades the papers. Previous Eng GPA 4.0 ; Student GPA: 3.6
expect to get a C, unless you are REALLY good at writing essays.
Pros: Tilka is a good lecturer, clear lectures. It's a short class, fairly easy multiple choice tests. Do not have to attend all classes because she reviews. Cons: You MUST read the material, she tests direct quotes. Repetitive lectures. Gets off the point. Grades essays fairly strictly. Must have organization in essays.
I like her as a person, but she is a tough grader. She does grade based on her opinion of the paper. Her handwriting is difficult to read which is frustrating because she writes all over the paper. I like her personality, but it can get annoying after a couple of months. I would recommend her only if there isn't someone better to teach the subj
An extream Feminist and has crushes on dead poets. She is very tough on her tests and essays. Take someone else who is not so bias or boring.
very hard grader. gives out way too much information for one test and does't narrow it down for you. no reviews are given out, so go to the SI session. There's one very hard out of class essay. I didn't go to the SI session and I didn't really read most of the poems and luckily I pulled off a C.
She is a feminist, but she is a wonderful teacher. She is very passionate about literature and she knows what she is talking about. I truely enjoyed her class most of the time. Her tests arent hard if you just go to class, pay attention, take notes, and study an hour before. I would take her again, and I definitley recommend her.
Expects you to take a lot of notes so when it come time to study for exams it's overwhelming. Don't take her unless there's no other option!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE AT 8 IN THE MORNING!!!!!!
I must disagree with a lot of the comments left for Ms. Tilka. I took a class with her this summer and she was always there to help and was clear with her instructions. If you seek her assistance more likely you will be successful in her class. It will be challenging but you will learn a lot!! I did & it was a awsome experience!
BOOOOORING.
VERY BORING. I took the 8 am in the summer and that was the worst decision I have ever made. That class just dragged on for 2 hours and I learned nothing other than BRITISH LIT SUCKS. Don't ever take that class with her.
She is all over the place when lecturing and it is very hard to follow. She obviously knows what she is talking about but is not a very effective lecturer. Read the book and you should be fine.
Her test are tricky.
british literature. if you are sci major and dont care for english, TAKE HER! her class is great for people who just dont care for english. the test is just a hash of the lecture, go there and read the poem you will do just fine. no real studying requried. if your into english well she does know her stuff and goes well into the literature stuff.
She's very good at telling you exactly what she wants
She reads assignment during class. Tests are very hard, even 4 multiple choice. Out of class essay is difficult, but if you see her, she will help out. Seems like you could get away with either reading or going to class, not both. The test questions don't have to do with the background or the story, but hidden info that isn't talked about in class.
This woman is insane. She requires out of class essays which hardly pertain to the course topics. Her feedback is unclear. She has repeatedly taught us FALSE GRAMMAR RULES such as, "Don't use ellipsis when removing parts of quotes out!" What?! Do not take her under any circumstance!!
absolute WORST teacher i have ever had. she doesnt care about helping her students out. she told me several things that she would do for me to help me boost my grade because of a certain situation, and when i confronted her about helping me she told me I DONT REMEMBER SAYING ANY OF THAT! as if i was putting words into her mouth! do not take her!
I just finished her Summer Technical writing course and earned an A. Her lectures are interesting and funny. Unfortunately, her editing is somewhat contradictory. "Do this, no, don't do that." I found this class very easy. She has an 'attitude.' You tell her something and she responds, "whatever!" I think that's her favorite word.
This class isn't ridiculous, but I was not interested at all in her lectures- she makes class time pointless by going over what we were supposed to read the night before- but if you don't want to read, just go to class. she goes over everything. Not a hard class, but not fun... and I was excited about it at first.
Tilka is insane. She told us to write an opinionated response to a prompt, "nothing like a research paper", and then gave me a D on the paper for putting "too much personality" into it and because I had mentioned something about Harry Potter dueling Voldemort at the end of every book, which was "not true, -10"
Just as other have said you either read or go to class, no need for both. Easy tests but VERY hard grading on the essays, although she admits she has her TA do most of it. You could definitely tell a grad student was grading--she left some demeaning comments.
I would not suggest taking Tilka. Attendance is not mandatory, but she pretty much goes over everything in lecture...pretty boring. There are 3 tests and an essay in all...good luck if you have her.
This class isn't really analytical. The tests are 25 multiple choice q's mostly based on historical context and one essay which is where the analysis comes into play. The lectures are kind of droll if you're not really into history. But the wonderful thing about this class is that since att isn't mandatory you could just read and show up test day.
I tried asking her for help 3 times and she basically just repeated my question back to me. Her lectures are boring. Tests are hard. Essays are graded for content but mostly for format.
She knows a lot...but she is really boring. And if you plan on reading and not going to class I would choose otherwise because what you read can be confusing. The tests are pretty hard and she grades the essays REALLY hard. Well the TA's do. Wouldn't recommend.
THIS IS NOT AN ENGLISH CLASS. IT IS A HISTORY CLASS. She grades essays extremely hard. Don't try to be creative, just give her exactly what she wants. She doesn't give any clues to what will be on the test; no reviews. Tons of reading, but only 25 questions on the test which are mostly historical. I do NOT recommend her.
I went into british lit thinking it was going to be so boring, but it actually wasn't as bad as I thought. Her lectures are pretty interesting. You write one paper which isn't that bad and the tests are tricky but they arn't horrible. If you listen in class you'll be fine!
THIS CLASS WAS HARD!!!!! Her tests are hard and she grades essays really tough!!!! Her tests are half essay and half multiple choice and the mc is just as hard as the essay. Try to find another prof before you take this one. She doesn't communicate with students well. You can't ask her questions and it's hard to take notes because she lecture fast
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR TECHNICAL WRITING!!! She grades based on what SHE thinks is correct although she has never been in the professional world. She will belittle you in front of the class. Her grading is very inconsistent. Very arguative. Doesn't give clear instructions. She counts off for work that is there. Not worth the stress!!!
I am really surprised by some of the negative comments about Tilka. She is one of the best English teachers I've had. She is HILARIOUS and her lectures are really entertaining. She's also really helpful, especially during office hours. Highly recommend her for 3319. Her husband, Dr. Hennessy, is a badass as well!
I must admit that I made a D in this class due to the difficult tests. But I learned that I should have gone to her office sooner rather than later. She is a good teacher and knows her stuff. She convinced me to change my major and I completely thank her today. She had an impact on me! Just remember to ask questions!!
She is a feminist that spouts off about the repression of women throughout Britain. All of her lectures are centered around women and how they influenced the poets of the Romantic era and beyond. None of that is on any test. She provided a study guide, once. Absolutely none of it was on the test; it was all quotes. Unhelpful, cocky, and brash.
Tilka is not necessarily friendly, nice, or approachable, but she is a pretty great lecturer. She hates having questions asked in class, but is more perceptive to them if their asked after class. Overall, I learned a lot in her class and enjoyed it.
Tilka is a good professor, very good lecturer. She is very repetitive so you can't miss a thing! I highly recommend going to here class as much as possible. There are three tests and an essay for a test grade, not hard at all. As long as you read and know the material you should be fine. I recommend this class!
Never really liked English before Tilka. Her class is a perfect melding of English and history. Going to lecture and reading is pretty much essential for an A (mostly reading) but her lectures are so interesting, I didn't want to miss even though I had her at 8 am! Very knowledgeable and very well spoken. One of my favorite classes here.
Dont listen to any of these other people. Don't take British Literature at all. It is boring and way uninteresting. All this teacher does is put you to sleep. She is a horrible lecturer and is not clear on what is on the test. Don't ever have Tilka as a teacher.
I took Tilka for ENG 2359 Mythology. You aren't required to come to class, so no one does. Tests are easy. Textbook is useful but don't bother getting the other books. Cliff Notes will do just fine.
Her IA's are lame; She reads from the book; She ruined mythology for me; of the three text books, one was over 500 pages and we had a 25 question final over the book, with NO study guide....500 pages--->25 questions--->no study guide--->sucks.
Rarely discussed the literature, focused mostly on history even though she made countless mistakes. Grades papers expecting you to write a High School paper-anything higher results in a lower grade.
Talks a LOT! Talks more than teaches. Even though this class was NOT a writing intensive class, you still have to write 7 short papers every other week. She is a tough grader but she is very helpful when she is in her office. She tells you to email her when you will be in but never responds to emails.
Tilka is not a good professor. She seems to think everyone has the same passion for British Literature as she does. She provides no power points and doesn't like to have Q&A time. She also does not provide a review and her class is extremely boring, with her throwing information at you and the majority of students asleep,it is a horrific experience
She is awful! You ask her to revise your paper before you turn it in and she tears you apart, then when you actually turn it in she tears you apart again even though SHE revised it. Nothing is good enough for her no matter how hard you try nothing is good enough. And yeah all she does is talk the whole class and expect you to listen instead of work
Not worth your hard earned money and time. She is way too difficult and doesnt care about her students grades.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR... She can never make her mind up on what she wants and makes you feel stupid... She will show you how to correct something and you do it and then it is wrong when she grades it...
This class is a lot of her talking and you listening, no Q&A. It's more like a history class than an English class and I liked that. Homework involves lots of reading. Tests are based on recognizing authors and texts. Tests are short MC with short essays. Only homework assignment ever, a 3-page essay. I suggest you go to lecture, you'll do better.
She focuses a lot on the history of the time periods instead of the literature. She will read a good portion of the assigned readings in class. Her tests are 25 multiple choice questions and 1 essay and she curves a lot. There is also one essay. Attendance not mandatory but highly highly suggested.
Tilka's mythology class was very interesting. If you have read the Odyessey and Morte D'Arthur, you're sufficiently prepared for the course. The exams consist of 25 multiple choice questions and an essay. It was a class I enjoyed reading for, and I recommend it as an elective for any English majors/minors.
You must have perfect grammar to perform well in this class. Tilka has unrealistic expectations for student's writing. She lectures the entire class, but not information is correct or helpful. As a student you must be prepared to teach yourself.
Tilka was a great teacher. Her lectures were very interesting and funny! She was one of my favorite teachers even though my class was at 8 AM. I never minded going! You dont even have to show up because she doesnt take attendance. If you want to pass just show up! Grades hard, but she's very helpful and nice. Loved this class!
Tilka is the worst teacher ive ever had. She is rude and unhelpful. Her expectations for the assignments are unrealistic. You never know what is considered right or wrong. If you are a strong writing you might pull off a B. If not I highly recommend taking a different instructor.
WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. Run, as fast as you can.
Worst professor of my life. Please do not take her unless you are seeking to lower your GPA. I have only missed one class and have no clue what we are doing because she is not clear at all
I enjoyed her feminine perspective. Lectures are interesting if you have an adult attention span. Tests arent so bad.
Lectures are not that great but you HAVE to go to class and take notes everyday. Tests are strictly over lecture and the poems she tells you. You have to write a essay for each test which was difficult for me but she is very willing to work with you, without a doubt. I failed my first test and got low C's on the others and still made a B.
Tilka is not a teacher I would recommend. Her lectures can be interesting but does not give you enough time to write down notes. She speaks very fast and does not provide any information on her powerpoint presenations. We had to write an analysis paper which was a bit difficult to write. She does offer help but she is unclear of her expectations.
She knows her material and obviously loves it. During lecture she tends to repeat the same points, but her ideas are solid. She'll go over the poems in class and will give you an overview of the reading, but you also have to read for yourself. I recommend her for an easy but informative A.
Ms Tilka is a top-notch professor. I learned a great deal from her.
If you take her for technical writing, prepare to be talked down upon. She thinks she knows everything about every job ever. Her handwriting is horrible and hard to read. She goes on and on in class about the most random things that have nothing to do with Technical Writing. It feels like she hates any major dealing with science.
Her tests questions are not complete sentences, and if you have a question she will make yu sit there the whole time with your hand up and never answer it. She also gets off topic in class and goes to talk about other things.. Grading is horrible. I had 3 different grades for one test. Do not take this unless there is no other option!
She's really not that bad once you figure out how she works. All of her lectures pretty much break down the story for non-english majors to understand. The best advice I have is to go to class and then go home and read the story. Notes aren't necessary.
She does talk over class time. And she does break the stories down to make it easier to understand.
This class isn't a walk in the park, but if you read what;s on the syllabus and go to class and pay attention to her lectures you'll be fine. If you ever have questions either her or her TAs will be available to help you. She really does want you to do well.
all lecture, no interaction with students. She wants the students to do well, but is very vague. There is one out of class paper, 2 tests that are multiple choice and essays, and the final is just multiple choice. The tests are extremely detailed down to exact words from the poems in the book. I do not recommend this teacher.
Had her for two classes and that was by design. The Brit Lit class was difficult, but she did curve and her and the TAs were helpful if you asked for it. If you're an English minor or major, then you should have good enough writing skills to get an A in her classes if you invest the time and you're not embarrassed to ask for help. I recommend her.
Honestly, you have to go to the lectures to get all the information you need for the exams, unless you are a pro at reading and memorizing every little detail. Her lectures are not mandatory, but YOU NEED TO GO. She gives you a lot of info and she makes it easier to read the text. I would take my advice if I were you. :)
If you don't care about Literature or history and just want to get your lit credits out of the way, you'll be happy with her. You will be taught some incorrect information and your essays will have to be plain-jane, unoriginal template writing with no critical thinking allowed, but there it is. I'm an English major and I couldn't stand this class.
If you are not an English major, this may be a tough class. Consists of 2 multiple choice and essay tests, one out of class essay (equivalent to test grade) and a multiple choice final. She tends to pick specific quotes from 1 of 20 readings and asks you to identify the speaker andor story. She can be condescending at times, but she does curve.
Tilka's lectures are pretty boring because there are little to no visual aids. However, she does a good job of summarizing the readings. Take notes if you don't want to read. There are only four grades: two in-class multiple choice & essay tests, an out-of-class essay, and a non-cumulative multiple choice only final. She does curves grades.
When I looked her up on here and saw her terrible rating, I thought the class would be so hard. I was so wrong. She is awesome! You just have to go to class and pay attention. I skipped a lot and barely read any. She covers everything and curves big time!!! I never failed a test. She is funny and tries to make it interesting! TAKE HER!
She's great! She makes Brit lit a breeze to understand and puts it into modern terms! She isn't there to fail you and makes that clear, but still holds you accountable for your grade. Tests are multiple choice (with curve) and an essay.
I really liked taking Tilka for British Lit before 18th century. The time period itself is extremely boring, everything between 100-1500 AD is religious in nature. She always adds a historical and cultural perspective to her lectures which I always found interesting. You must read the book if you want to pass this class.
Skipped a lot of her classes, just read the book over and over for the tests. It's pretty easy, She curves. Her lectures are boring as any other literature class would be but she's passionate about it and she is hilarious at times. I did well on the exams, essays and English is not my forte.
No one in the class received an A. I would follow the template she provided, what the book suggested and end up with a C or D. Have her review my work before turning in, follow everything she suggests, still receive a C. Worst class I've ever taken and I have never received anything lower than a B on an english assignment.
I really loved her. She's quirky and funny. She made me fall in love with the literature1
Lectures are literally just the readings from the textbook, so if you want to be read to this is the perfect class- though she does give a little background and extra information when she reads. Tests are all things from the book, there isn't much of a way around getting it. She does curve and will help if you ask.
Loved her! pretty funny, extremely interesting facts and background info about the material. Really enjoyed her, you have to read for the class but it's really not that hard. Skipped occasionally and I made a B+ TAKE HER!
No attendance, talks the whole time but does let us out early, passionate about the subject, & very sweet older lady. No matter what read the text even if it is a summary online, try to go to her lectures bc sometimes she reads the texts, but also gives good notes. The test is 25multi choice & 25 pt 5 paragraph essay(easy if study).
I busted my butt in her class and did all the readings. Her lectures are long and she doesn't allow you to ask questions to clarify. you have to go to office hours for questions. there is so much reading and after getting essay help i still wound up with a c. some of her test questions are unclear and she puts you to sleep. i do not recommend!
She just talks. And talks. And talks. Her reviews weren't even reviews. They basically said "study everything."
If you are biology major or Ag major or any science related major its best if you avoid her at all costs you grade depends on it. She knows more about your major without knowing anything about it. She offers help outside class but it's useless. She tells you to correct things you do, it's wrong. No one made a good grade, most people failed. No Go.
This was my worst professor ever. The lectures themselves are very boring and she doesn't do anything but read the material out to you, which you should have done out of class. Also, she pushes a lot of work off to her student teachers and isn't much help. My advice? Go for another Brit Lit professor.
I heard this class was going to be hard, but it turned out ok. Really study for the tests because she gives out a lot of information to cover. Half of the tests are essays that she grades extremely hard. Know your people, themes, and poems. Read the book! Read the poems! Asking for help is an option, but she seems distant or stingy. Go to class!
I have never had a professor this bad. Does not give clear feedback on assignments, hard to read handwriting, very hard grader, and extremely back and forth on what she wants. Only her edits are right. Even after she tears your paper up with corrections and you do them to her specifications, YOU ARE STILL WRONG!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER No structure Does not engage students Reads/talks fast entire class Gives too much info & all is 'important' for exams, word for word Expects too much on essays yet does not teach well, acts as if it is a writing intensive course! Goes off topic Repeats herself Basically teaching yourself if you take her! Vague unclear grading.
Tilka does not use any visual aid, only reads the readings to you, adds additional info. Tests were pretty easy (A's on both), but the out of class essay was graded pretty harshly(I made a C, which is unusual for me in writing.) Make sure to read over the handouts, only passed out in class. She doesn't use TRACS at all. Tough, but I learned a lot.
Tough grader, you really have to work. Don't miss classes, she doesn't take attendance but since she doesn't use TRACS the only information you have to go off of is in the class itself. Made a C on the out of class essay I spent hours on. Ended up making a B (miraculously) overall. Only 4 grades: 3 tests and the essay.
This class was fairly difficult, mainly because the text isn't written in Modern English. She only assigns 4 grades for the whole semester: 3 tests and a paper. Be prepared to multiple choice and essay portions on tests. Overall a difficult course, and she wasn't very helpful.
Worst professor I have ever had. Offers writing help outside of the classroom but feedback is typically useless, since the corrections she tells you to make on your paper is usually what she'll end up deducting points off of. Made the changes she wanted me to make but was completely useless since she changes her mind from one minute to the next.
She expects you to listen and not to provide questions or feedback. Must go to class or you will miss handouts and she doesn't post slides online. Only cares about her interpretation. Easy class to get a B or A if you want it. Two Tests with an essay and multiple choice. One out of class essay as a test grade.
I am a junior in college and have had many professors, all of whom I liked some aspect of. She is by far the worst. Setting aside how high strung and condescending she is, she is a poor instructor. She will not use TRACs so if you miss any class you will fail. she verbally sets vague expectations on papers then grades them ruthlessly. Stay away.
Vague in expectations and doesn't use TRACS. Tough on essays, but easy multiple choice tests. (her tests are 1/2 essay and 1/2 multiple choice)
She is not one to give out A's which sucks, but she's really animated and a good teacher. Just go to lecture and you will do fine on the tests.
She does not post grades on TRACS or return assignments until the final unless you go to her office hours. I, unfortunately, had work during those. I have never struggled in an English or Literature class in my life, yet I got a D in her class. I had 4's on both of my Enlish AP tests in high school. She is very rude and condescending.
Skip her and take a different prof.
textbook information used but you can google the readings and save $60. only 4 assignments- 3 tests and an essay. essay was graded harshly (usually I get A/B on essays easily, had to work for a C.) 3 tests were harsh and you had to write an essay for 2 of them. attendance not mandatory, but dont take this class. most harsh grader ive ever had
4 exams. 3 multiple choice/essay. Final is multiple choice.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. Her expectations are not clearly outlined. Her exams were a blindside because of her expectations not being communicated effectively. I went to every class and don't feel like I learned anything from her. Avoid if possible.
WORST. CLASS. EVER...... This professor is by far the worst college professor i have ever taken in my entire college career. She doesn't post or even use any sort of power points during her lectures. She rambles about stuff that really isn't relevant to her tests. Awful grader and not helpful whatsoever. If you are forced to take her, good luck
I love English. I'm kinda awesome at English. I know. Bragging. Gross. This class, though. Wow. D's all the way. She's unclear, grades ruthlessly, talks about how stupid students are in front of other students, & doesn't understand good writing. She says there's no thesis or there isn't an argument, but it's there. Clearly there. DO NOT TAKE HER!
The entire class is based off of your major; all of the documents are tied to your major in some way shape or form. She can be highly confusing, she'll say she wants something, and you'll correct it, but when you get your paper back it will be in the incorrect format. I wouldn't recommend taking this class, but if you do, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!
Professor Tilka was the most influential and inspirational professor I had while at Texas State. Coursework and expectations were clearly laid out. Feedback was critical but done with purpose of growth. Thank you professor Tilka!!!
