good about outlining expectations, doesn't make you do group work :)
very straight foward
agree with others about good at outlining expectations. expects you to come to class, but very straight forward about what to expect on tests and projects. i hate group work too! :)
very nice and helpful...a lot of notes tho
Amazing teacher, extremely helpful and understanding, the only way to get through your history requirement at CofC.
She is amazing!! Class is like story time! I hate history and she is the ONLY way I got through it! If history is not your strong point, take her. Best decision I ever made. :)
Great teacher! Only way to get through History courses. Tests a little harder than you'd expect, but still good teacher!
very nice, each test has an essay part worth 50% , andthere is one project on historical accuracy of a movie of your choice. but overall class was fun and interesting
No Comments
good, interesting lecture, but ****ed up grading.
take good notes in her class and the tests will be so easy. interesting lectures, she is so fun and makes class fly by!
LOVES teaching history. Every class was storytime! Grading was strict, and tests were harder than expected, but her teaching was wonderful!!!
Make sure you make to every class or parts of the test will confuse you. I haven't even bought the textbook and in the 2nd year in a row I'm getting an A in the class. Just show up to class and take good notes and youre money baby you dont even know it
the first history class i have EVER enjoyed. she knows her stuff, and if she doesnt know something she says it. only 4 grades all semester- 3 tests and 1 paper. completely understanding and helpful. TAKE HER!!!!!!!!
Extremely nice professor, loves telling stories and teaching history. Come to class, pay attention, and take good notes because tests (essay parts) are in depth. Overall a wonderful class.
Professor Toland is GREAT, and her classes fly by even though you have to take notes all of the time. You have 3 tests including the final, one 5 page paper, and no homework. Her tests are from class notes, and she is one of the nicest teachers ever.
very nice teacher, out to help the student get a good grade. tests are not easy, but she provides lots of opportunities for extra credit if you show up.
What a great teacher! Her tests aren't the easiest, but preparing for them is the only thing you will do outside of class, except for one paper. Very smart. Very nice. History classes can be super not fun, but I loved this class! Take her!
I dont know what these people are talking about. This woman is a complete fake. She is rude and condescending. She knows history well, but is very opinionated, and not open for debate. She ****s up grading on every single exam. Ignorant.
A GREAT teacher. Classes are interesting. The tests aren't THAT hard. They just require you to put a little effort into them. If you take good notes you'll be fine. You definitely don't have to read the book ever!
This teacher is terrible...tests are hard..talks to fast..forgetful..frustrated with life...she thinks its english but its really history..my english teacher didnt garde this paper as hard as she does!! Will be miserable
very good teacher, funny, easy to get along with. fun discussions in class. i usually sleep through my other classes but stayed awake in hers. take notes and go every day and you should get a B.
awesome teacher, made history almost interesting.
Very fun teacher, makes history fun. but hard grader
Awesome lady...go to class and you make a B...test based off notes...very understanding and loves story time!!! take her
Well, I had Professor Toland for 2 semesters and she has been my favorite teacher by far. I actually really enjoy going to her classes, and she's extremely understanding in general. Her classes have a jolly atmosphere. Definately take her.
Kinda spacey, but very nice and jolly in class. Tests are fairly easy, but she graded the papers rather harshly. Overall, not to hard to get a B.
talks about history in a soap opera fashion and then expects you to know the important political facts on the test [after spending all of class time talking about her son and who the czarina kissed]
I have had her for two semesters now, and I absolutely LOVE HER! She always has a smile on her face, and she is always willing to help you. Her class is not easy though, but if you try and take very thorough notes you will be fine. 3 tests and a paper.
DO NOT BE FOOLED. If you like the kindergarten voice and being treated like a seventh grader you’ll feel right at home. She picks favorites from the first day and it will drive you insane to see the attention they get (hence the reason there are people
I loved Prof. Toland. She made history very understandable and should definitely write her own history textbook. Students would definitely read it then. Her tests are a little challenging, but if you study your notes (and take good ones) you are cool.
Nit Wit! She is never prepared, always waiting till last minute to give info sheets or test dates. Good lectures. Harshly grades papers on style versus content. 2 test and a map test, 2 papers and a research paper. Scattered brained.
great teacher, if you hate history take toland, she makes it interesting, attendence is manditory, 1 paper, two tests and a map test
Great lectures, but HARSH grader! I have never made less than a B+ on any paper, and she told me my writing was pathetic. Lots of reading, tough tests, but makes class fun. Good for majors, perhaps.
LOVE HER!!Wasn't a big history person until her class!! She makes it fun and interesting. The only thing is that her tests are kinda hard and there are only 2, a paper and a map test with the final...very helpful and tells lots of personal stories!! i agree! she should write her own book one day!!!
The class is fun. Test are hard and you don't have alot of grades. Is not clear about dates and can be hard to get in touch with. Her stories are fun. But you really have to study for the tests and work hard on your papers.
extremely annoying. i liked her in the beginning, but realized that i learned more about her life than history. she complains all the time about random stuff and flips her hair too much and talks in a child voice half the time. im not kidding shell annoy the hell out of you. stay away
a month into the class, something bad must have happened in her life because she turned into a... i got an a in the class but i would nevernever take her again. and i think i know as much about her family as she does. no study guide which is ok except i FILLED a notebook w notes. youll be stressed
Are we still in elementary school? I don't think that students deserve to be treated as mentally deficient just because they choose to go to school in SC. Most boring, frustrating class ever. I killed brain cells.
loved her lectures! very clear and organized except for the kick back fridays when stories rule the class. Tests come straight from the notes. Take good notes! write down everything she says! She definately picks favorites. Be involved in class discussion. Participation is a plus.
HORRIBLE teacher!! The Biggest Bit** EVER! I left her office hours crying twice! Won't help and doesn't care! She picks favorites the first day of classes and only awknowledges them! She is VERY frusterating...she sucks and her class sucks!
She is a very nice teacher, however her teaching style may annoy you. She makes lectures interesting but when it comes time for the test she ask questions that she did not cover and expects you to know more than she gives even though she makes the course seems laid back.
If you want to hear irrelevent stories and not the facts, take her. As well grades essay very tough! She thinks she is a princess and very important, but is far from that... ENJOY?
don't listen to any of these ppl. she is a sweet mother who only gives 2 tests (one the final that's not comprehensive) take good notes though and sit in the front so she can pick you as her fav. rarely takes attendance, dates are not important, and somedays you just listen to her story time
Horrible teacher! She is so scattered and only gives tests. If you are someone who can cram 50 pages of notes & take a test and feel good that it counts as 50% of your grade, go for it. She is very rude and needs to take a few English classes, as she provides ridiculous critique on papers!
Very unorganized and terrible. The way she grades papers is ridiculous, she obviously has no English background. She will go over your rough draft with you, mark nothing on it and then tear your final draft apart and fail you. Stay away at all costs!
She is an awesome teacher and an awesome lady! Class is really interesting, even for people not interested in History. She tells great stories and is really helpful. You just have to work hard on her papers. Tests aren't too bad.
Just about the nicest lady you will ever meet! Lectures all of class, but tells great stories to break up the time. Will help with anything you ask her to. Is stricter on the grading scale, but nevertheless, a wonderful, compassionate, interesting woman. Highly recommend!
If you enjoy...writing papers that are graded with no regard to the enlish language or to the facts of history, being treated like a 12 year old, being ignored when you ask or answer questions, the company of a moody woman, indecisiveness, and lack of organization, go ahead and take Toland...good luck! I believed her good reviews to my detriment!
Anyone who talks poorly of Mrs. Toland is just bitter because they did poorly. She is a sweet woman and runs a very laid back class. Her class is all lecture, so take good notes b/c her tests are based off the DETAILS of her lecuture. As far as history teachers go you couldnt ask for a more fun teacher that still challenges you to learn the info.
funny, very eay tells hist like its a sory...nice teach. some papers but not hard...i liked her alot
there's NO homework, and she tells history like it's story time, and she's funny, too...BUT, her grading scale on papers is FAR WORSE than that of my english teacher!!! sometimes she treats you like a 12 yr. old when you ask questions..it's up to you!
She's awesome. By far the best history prof. She makes history interesting and tells it like an adventure story. There is minimal homework and she grades pretty fairly. Take her, you won't regret
She makes the class very interesting because she makes all of her lectures seem like stories, and she also tells lots of stories about her life which is fun. Only a small paper, midterm (8 quotes from through class, 15 matching, and 4 short answer, and then an essay) and then a 5 page research paper on a historical movie. Not an easy grader though
these people are crazy. she talks about nonsence the whole time and then grades you hard as hell. only 2 tests which is good b/c you dont have to study but bad b/c then when the test comes around you have literally 40 pages of notes to study. grades ridiculously on your paper, even if you go to her for help she wont tell you what to change.
Toland is a really nice lady. Her lectures are really interesting and she indulges in "laid back mondays" etc. to give you a break. Her lectures are fun and she keeps your attention. But...her tests are very specific so take good notes and she grades papers pretty tough. Overall, a good teacher, highly recommended, but be prepared to study hard!
She attempts to make her lectures interesting by telling them like stories using different voices and tones, but in all honestly, i felt it drew away from the content being taught. She also will voice her opinion on various topics which can approach on being offensive depending on which side of the comment you fall on...
you take gazillions of notes and she only pick out like 5 little points out of atleast 50+ pgs of notes for the tests- so the test aren't reflective of what you have studied. i found that most A students struggle for a B in this class. Don't miss her class- I only missed one the whole semester and she caught me. An okay teacher- but frustrating.
i liked her! sure... she was hard.. test-wise... but her lectures were very interesting. you just have to study and work hard on the papers.
She makes lectures interesting, but tests are very hard and detailed. Grades papers ridiculously hard and doesn't put any reasons for giving a bad grade. Hard B class.
She makes history ands story, which in turn makes it fun to listen to. She isn't difficult if you just pay attention. You can even miss a couple of classes and get a good grade. She is absolutely one of the best professors I've ever had. Would take more classes with her if she taught them.
I hated this woman. She is childish and living vicariously through her favorite students.
Mrs. Toland is a good teacher. She does not like are want to see her students fail. By talking to her, you will find that out. Mrs. Toland's history class is not hard at all!
If you can get in her class, do it. She is by far one of the best professors I have had. Some say she plays favorites but she grades fairly and is nice to everyone.
AMAZING! Take her- best class I've ever taken!
not helpful, too concerned about coming off as "cool" to her students, VERY VERY UNCLEAR ABOUT WHAT SHE'S TEACHING! class is a joke. DON'T TAKE HER!
This class was by far one of the most interesting classes I've taken. Professor Toland makes her class fun and I wanted to go to class most of the time. However, she is VERY unclear about what she is looking for on tests. I would take her again but I wouldn't put as much time into studying for her class because getting an A is pretty hard.
EXTREMELY UNCLEAR. Has no idea what she wants out of students for tests. Very inconsistent. Take McSweeney! Oh and don't buy the textbook!!!
Worst Teacher I've had in years! "Story Time 101" is what her class should be called. Do not take if you are at all interested in this subject- unless you LOVE the French Revolution. FACT: For midterm we're supposed to have read 7 chapters; We got through TWO! Total slack job and hated every moment of her classes. I had to drop this course.
teacher lectures notes entire class, with frequents tangents and personal stories. east to take notes from etc
Her lectures are like listening to an interesting documentary were neat facts about the time period are thrown in. She tells occasional personal stories, mainly to rest your hand. Not THAT many notes for a history class and the tests are very straight forward. 1 mid-term, 1 research project, 1 short essay, and a final. I would take her again!
Loved her...she cracked me up every day with her "personal stories" and listening to her lectures did not seem like a waste of time, unlike some other teachers! She is funny and I actually learned some stuff. Def try to get her!
a little hard for a 102 class, but a really nice prof
She is supper nice. One 5 page paper on a movie, and a few exams. The exams are tricky, but she gives the essay topics before hand. No homeowrk, and the texts are optional. I would take her for 104
This woman is the best teacher! I hate history but I loved going to her class because its more like "story time." The note taking is easy and she loooves quotes. Test questions aren't tricky, they're "specific." Her stories are great and you can tell she loves her job. TAKE HER!
GO TO CLASS! TAKE GOOD NOTES! as long as you know your notes back and forth you'll do fine. don't miss a class. she doesn't teach out of the books so you'll miss a lot if you're not there. overall a good teacher. lots of stories.
Awesome teacher!!! Not an easy A, but well worth it. She's a professor you'll never forget
I really enjoyed this Gen Ed class! She is so fun and tells great stories. Makes history very accessible and interesting. Her objective tests are not hard if you study for them. It wasn't an easy class but I don't know of a HIST 101 that isn't. Would highly recommend her!! She is so personable. Attending class is crucial
Great teacher! Kept me interested even though I couldn't stand History. I learned a lot from her notes and the books I had to read for the paper I did for her class. I still do no like history, but this professor can change the negatives / boredom aspects of a dreadful course. Thanks for this course!
Spends a lot of the time in class telling stories, that do not always pertain to the lesson. You spend time taking notes on extras, that she sometimes doesn't specify if it will be on the test or not.She can be helpful, but is very short at times. After she has spent time telling irrelevant stories, she will rush the class to have all notes done.
Professor Toland is a joke. She wastes time telling stories and talking to people in the class. She answered phone calls during class from her children. The material is not hard, but is presented in a disorganized manner.
Awesome teacher, great stories, pretty friendly. Willing to help if you need it.
She was the best History teacher I have ever had! History has always been my worst subject but she made it interesting. You have to study to make a good grade but her stories and the way she lectures makes it easier to study.
I absolutely loved Professor Toland! She made a subject that has the potential to be boring so interesting and fun. Attendance is not mandatory but you will not succeed in the class if you do not attend. There are only three tests and one huge research paper that she is more then willing to help you on. If you do the work and participate definite A
She makes class interesting, but the material is hard to follow. She moves chronologically, but she wastes a lot of time in class telling stories - which is funny, until the end of the semester when you have to teach yourself everything about WWII and the Cold War because she ran out of class time to do so. She also grades WAYYY too harsh.
At first I liked Mrs. Toland. However, as the semester went on I changed my opinion. I realized that her fun little stories are a waste of time and a cover up for her being a bad teacher. Despite her cute and nice facade, she is an overly tough grader. That being said, like any class, hard work promises an A.
bad teacher? are you kidding? the semester started off with a completely unengaged class forced to take the gen-ed history requirement. Her enthusiasm is so engaging/contagious. Somehow this woman has gotten our whole actively and willingly involved in class discussion. She makes history interesting through the stories she tells about these histo
Prof. Toland is a saint. she actually makes history fun and interesting. She is always enthusiastic and LOVES to teach her student and she is always there if you need help! her class is on the harder side, however its completely worth it. TAKE HER CLASS!
Not the best hist prof, don't recommend
Professor Toland is amazing! take this class!!!
By far the best teacher that I've ever had for history. I hated learning about history in high school because it was all out of the book, but she puts it in a way that gives you a perspective, a way that helps you better understand history instead of reading about it! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Take her you won't regret it!
Fun class but she hardly knows what she's talking about. Couldn't answer many questions students had. Who cares about how many stories she tells? It's not like she tests on material she didn't cover. Pushes deadlines back like no one else. No written homework. Overall - Eh.
I do not like her. She comes off as sweet and kind of a dork but she can be really mean. All she does is lecture and her tests are hard. What she talks about doesn't go along with the book. You have a midterm, a research paper, one test and the final. I would not recommend taking this class.
I totally agree with the comments below me, this lady seems sweet and innocent for a while but in actuality, coming to class was like sitting in on an episode of gossip girls. This professor is not very smart and i felt like she focused on the random silly details rather than the big picture. Shes a way tougher grader than she comes off. Avoid her
She gives notes the whole class and goes off on daily tangents. Yet her tests are not easy and she grades harshly. Only take her if its your only choice!
This professor is GREAT! I had absolutely NO interest in history before taking this class, actually i dreaded every second of it, but she made history fun and easy to understand. Her research paper was actually fun to write, and her tests aren't too bad. As long as you go to class and pay attention you will do well!
I hated history until this class. Professor Toland was a great teacher and allowed me to actually understand the material.I LOVED this class, and it's obvious she loves teaching. If you do your work you will be fine, If you don't like her you probably don't study or pay attention so you're blaming your bad grade on her.I HIGHLY recommend her class!
She is more interested in telling stories about her life then actually getting the concept of the history class down. After the midterm I knew I was not going to do well in her class after I nearly failed it. She give way too many notes that she expects you to know all of them. Too detailed. Avoid taking her
She gives way too much information and most of it is useless. She tells way too many stories. At first, the class way okay but after the midterm she sped up tremendously because she gets to far behind that by the end she'll give you a million handouts to tech yourself from along with assigning more books and movies just because she's so far behind.
STAY AWAY! SAVE YOURSELF! Worst teacher I have ever had. Can not stay on topic. Lectures are pointless just study the text in order to pass. Avoid her!!!!!
Professor Toland teaches the material as if she is telling a story, which helped make me more interested in learning it. She does get off topic a lot, and although this can become agitating, it's also my favorite thing about her. I do warn there are very few tests which cover a lot of material, so pay attention and study! Otherwise,I reccomend her!
Straight lecture class but very effective and informative
Worst teacher i had this semester! She straight lectures and gets off topic. She has very few tests that cover a lot of information so they are very difficult. Class gets boring very fast. She tends to only like the guys in the class too. Definitely wouldn't recommend taking this class from her it is the only class i was failing
Despite the occasional story, Professor Toland makes a point to illustrate the topics of her lecture effectively. It's true she gives few tests, and those tests cover a wide range of material, but she makes it clear from the beginning that if you plan to succeed in her class you must study. If it came up to take her class again, I would.
She is the toughest grader ever. She only gives three tests, two of which are your final and midterm. One research paper which she kills with point deductions and comments. She is the sweetest lady out there but if you're not willing to work extremely hard, avoid her class. My worst grade of my college career thus far.
Best teacher I've had here! She is a tough grader but it was so worth it. I loved her class and she made history really interesting and fun to learn about. Tests follow exactly what she talks about in class--no surprises.
Stay away! I loved history until I took her class. Her grading is ridiculously harsh, and she picks favorites. Her lectures are full of useless information, and she is very unorganized in giving information which makes taking notes difficult. I highly recommend staying away from her classes.
She's so nice, and the entire class is her telling stories about history. It's like story-time, but for adults! If you want to pass, just take notes, read her handouts (which are rare), and understand the things she tells you. It's not a hard class unless you're an idiot.
Loved her! Show up to class, only has 2 tests, midterm and final, not accumulative. Half each test is an essay the rest is short answer, multiple choice, and matching. As long as you take good notes and study those notes you are good to go. I didnt read the book otherwise I probably wouldve gotten an A. She does have a 7 page paper you have as well
She is the nicest lady and cares about her students. She gives a midterm, objective test, research paper (5 pages), and an exam. I'm awful at writing papers and I got an A- on it. She is big on giving "pop quizzes" but usually only counts as extra credit. Just show up, take good notes, and you will do great!!
She is a tough grader and she expects a lot from you. YOU MUST GO TO CLASS. She is very kind and her lectures are very interactive. I had no trouble making an A and whatever comes out of her mouth is what will be on her tests.
Prof Tolland is the best professor I have ever had. I took her for 115 and then took her again for 116. She is fun and interactive and loves to tell history like a story. EVERYTHING that comes out of her mouth is fair game for a test. The research paper is difficult but you can go to her for help. I had no problem making an A in both classes.
Funny, and sweet. No technology and strictly lecture. Missing class is difficult. She can get off topic and tell stories but I enjoyed that. Her lectures are interesting and enjoyable, just make sure you take lots of notes. She only has two exams and a few big essays and is a tough grader.
