If I had the choice to take this class again, I would shoot myself for just thinking it. She is extremely stupid, and the students spend most of the class correcting her. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid. Why didn't she stay in Mississippi, I know I wouldn't miss her
Difficult to understand because she's always making mistakes. Her notes don't correspond with the text, but you have to read the text in order to understand the material just so you can do decent on quizzes and tests. Try another Stats class.
Clearly does not know much about stats, but an easy class to pass. VERY annoying voice. I'd take this over the math version of this class. Not much material covered over the semester because she has a hard time teaching the concepts.
Indeed the dumbest professor in Binghamton. Repeats things over and over which is annoying. Doesn't know anything about stats. She is very close minded and expects you to assume what she wants on her quizzes. Take the class if you want to make fun of her
No Comments
almost the easiest class i have taken at binghamton, whole first half of semester is simple math concepts, things do get tricky towards the end but easy if you pay attention and work on the homework. tests are similar to homework and examples from notes
Wolcott is a nice lady and knows her stuff but isn't cut out for teaching. She repeats the same lectures over and over, day after day! You can do well on the exams with exactly what she tells you to study (meaning just 1 weeks worth of notes!)

Not as bad as everyone says...if you go to class and do the work you'll do fine...and the exams and quizzes are EXACTLY like the ones on blackboard, so just study from those and you'll do extremely well!!
One of the teachers who dont really care about the students and just care about grades. Doesnt have sympathy and does not take excuses. Horrible overall teacher and very very annoying. Never take her if you don't have to!!!!
She knows the concepts and explains them well. Not very passionate about giving extra points on tests but is fair. Just don't take math related, Stat of instance, classes from her cuz that's not her strong suit. Otherwise, she is not bad.
Whoever said she is the dumbest professor is a moron themselves, she definately knows her stuff, and she repeats the material as a REVIEW so students are ready for the test. 437 is not easy, but she DOES curve and if you go to her office hours she does show interest.
She is definitely one of the friendliest and helpful professors that I have ever had. She is willing to go out of her way to help her students.
Good teacher, very friendly. Also very helpful outside the class. I learned a lot. Beware of what some of the vindictive people wrote here: the language some people use is grotesque and I deplore their conduct.
Test are not the easiest, she is more then happy to help students. She will work with you on things as long as you don't f**k with her. She is one of the most helpful prof I have ever had.
I want to wipe my ass on her face. Terrible teacher. Annoying southern screech.

She's definitely very friendly. I love her Southern accent. She's one of the best professors that I've ever had. Don't be afraid to go to her office hours. She will help you. Her tests are fair and make you think.
No cqs112, no math147. Choose this cuz it's far easier than them. Her lecture is slow and easy to catch up with. She repeats important definition to make you understand the stuff. Homeworks are real help do this. Exam is not hard but time is too short to handle all.
Very nice but not that great of a teacher. She repeats a lot of things but doesn't explain them well. Also doesn't specify certain things but expects you to answer exactly the way she wants you to!
The tests are very long for an hour exam. She is very good and knows stats, se does tend to waste hours deriving proofs that you will not need to do on a test. I recommend her though, I enjoyed the class. Also her quizes are designed so you do well on the midterms.
Prof Wolcott is very friendly and helpful. Her class is designed so that you get an understanding of the subject instead of just playing around with numbers like most stats are about. So take it if you want to learn. The tests are hard and tricky but the quizes help you do well on the exams.
Problems with her teaching style is that she doesnt even derive answers correctly which causes the whole class to write out mistakes. Everyday in class students have to correct her. She repeats ALOT of things. Teaching Priorities dont make any sense. Take another prof more capable of teaching!!
Her quizzes and midterms aren't hard if you do the homework. She always repeats important definitions in class. I have friends who took other stats classes and wolcott's is the easiest.
she is def not bad at all...take good notes pay attention in class, study your notes and you should be fine
Honestly, not bad at all. The course itself is pretty easy. Just make sure you go to class cuz she lets you know what is important. She had to curve our first midterm down very slightly cuz the grades were too high.. jus go to class and you'll be fine.
Extremely disorganized. Says one thing and does another. Can't keep anything straight, postpones exams and quizzes, which aren't always needed. Notes are really scattered, and not being able to explain the math is just enough to screw you bigtime. Exams are really hard, i.e. the final, and grading is harsh. Hated the class, not the material.
A bit disorganized with her notes, but she does know the material. Fair tests and quizes if you go to class and discussion. Take good notes and go to test reviews and you should do fine.
very good class as long as you go to class and take notes. gives quizes before that is exactly like test questions. review sessions are very helpful
knows/reads how hard one tries in college and interperts that into ones grade. If you give it your all you will be fine!
Wolcott is great! She knows her stuff and she is always willing to help you out, especially if you are really working at it. Quizes are EXACTLY the same as the testes, but finals are much more difficult.
Go to class and take notes. Tests are highly correlated to both practice midterms and quizzes. It isn't a very difficult class.
Remarkably great teacher. Truly cares about her students and notices/rewards effort. Not always perfectly clear, but is always willing to help. Provides direction with papers, but you must know how to write clearly to do well. Asset to the econ department. Great attitude. Very approachable. Highly recommended.
Great at teaching a dry subject. She goes over things multiple times, it's hard to NOT learn the material. Tests were fair and easy if you know the material (which isn't too difficult).
She is a good professor. In the beginning of the semester she will warn the class that the material is difficult. It starts off easy then will get progressively more difficult. She may seem like she doesn't care about you, but she really does. She is quite a "softy". Do the work and make an effort, and she will notice.
4 years and she is by far the best professor I've had. A bit disorganized but she truly cares for her students. Material is a review of intermediate marco plus application to world events. Only professor I even bother goin to office hour. Participate in class and if she knows your name you are good. Tests are curved. Highly recommend.
Class is not all the hard. Teaches easy stuff spread through 1st half of semester then throws in some tricky stuff. Loves talking about her kids and other random stuff. 10 hws (have to do 8), 2 midterms, final,and2 5% quizzes. Nice lady but not dependable. Office hours were somewhat helpful. Going to discussions and reading the book helped me a lot
Great Professor, is willing to give help if you're looking for it. I would def. recommend her if you want to walk away from class and really understand how things work.
She's fair. If you show that you're trying and go to her office hours, she'll boost up your grade! I didn't do too well on the tests but she gave me a B+ for going to her office hours and participating in class.
she is tough but good
A pretty good (and easy) class overall, and it does help to go. Do sit closer to the front so she will recognize who you are. She repeats the concepts over and over (and over again) until you get it. Not too much studying was needed to do well for this class. I think she gives some sort of curve for final grades.
She is the only teacher who actually made me believe in my math skills... She is tough, but very good. Just make sure you go in to every lecture, sit in the front and participate. She is also very helpful in her office hours. Love her, definitely reccomend
A few or several students, out of 40 to 50 people in class, may like it because she's usually dealing with them during the class. not clear examples. her own way to teach. Somebody might like it, I mean a few, mostly doesn't.
She is tough and blunt but helps you learn a lot.I would follow her classes if she still teaches higher level econ. Do your homework and participate then you'll ending likeing her~
she's ok,but she talks down to the students.and shouts a lot.....this is college not kindergarten,so over this course.
Not bad as teacher but the test ?s are tricky. I looked up the grade distribution between the 2 micro classes this semester and in her class the average was a C+ with the most common grade being a D. In the other class with plassmann, the avg was a B+, the mode: A. it's just frustrating when you know your stuff and end up with a bad grade
I thought that Prof. Walcott was a pretty good professor. She was clear, the tests were fairly easy, and she is pretty funny to boot. You can tell she wants her students to succeed and understand the topics being taught. Although sometimes I thought she was pretty condescending, she is (usually) just joking. Definitely recommend.
Great professor, helpful and clear in lecture.
Pretty easy class. She is very nice 1 on 1 but can be intimidating in lecture.
Hard if you've never taken Econ before. A breeze if you have. Silly examples and tests are about 40-50% the same as the year before (provided in course). Nice but intimidating.
Very clear in class and the lectures are much better than most classes. I never took and Econ class before and I thought the tests were very fair. Very good teacher, can't complain at all.
She is very helpful and nice during the official hours. One of great professors in the Bing. It is not hard to get an A if you read notes taken in the class and really digest it!
She treats you like you are a first grader, but if you attend class and pay attention you will do well. You might not like her very much though. I went into this class very interested in the topic and left never wanting to learn anything about trade again, so... take that as you will.
Susan Wolcott isn't a good professor. Even though she do held office hours prior to midtern and final examinations, she wouldn't go into length to explain the logistic behind the economic problems. I emailed her several email messages regarding the finals, and she never responded. To be blunt, she wasn't helpful. Avoid if possible.
She is ALWAYS there for you during office hours. Really cares about the students and she may come off a little rude in lecture, but in office hours, she's a different person. I'd take this class again if I had to.
EXACTLY HARD... NO MERCY
Tests are straightforward and directly from notes and hw, she's funny and sarcastic! Definitely got me interested in economics
Lol @ the people saying she yells and is rude for repeating things in Micro... I honestly think she's as clear and as polite as you could hope from someone standing in front of 250 people. I like her, she's kind of sarcastic and funny in a way that makes her more interesting, and she's obviously incredibly smart. Good class.
Great professor. One of the best classes I have ever taken.
I loved Prof. Wolcott, she also goes by Prof. Hanes. She is funny in class and cares about her students. She goes over the material well and tries to reinforce important topics. Midterms and final are kind of hard because they are usually not that similar to the review, but if you read the textbook outside of class you should be fine.
Be sure to go to class and take notes, this makes the class much easier than it would seem. Exam questions are identical to past papers, and can be solved just by using the lecture notes. Textbook not required if you're a diligent note taker. I highly advise this class if you are interested in exchange rates and macroeconomic policy trends.
Economics is known to be hard at Binghamton, but she explained the content very well. Her lectures are great and she is always available outside of class and does review sessions before each test. Her tests are kind of hard but an A is definitely achievable. Make sure you do the homework and quizzes.
Wolcott is amazing. Her lectures are hilarious but you need to pay attention or you'll be lost. Textbook reading is a must. Quizzes, homework, and attendance are grade boosters and the tests are fair. My ta was cool and even showed us breaking bad in class but discussions are useless so don't bother going. Overall solid choice.
One of the best Econ professors in Bing! She is a hard but fair grader. Attendance is not mandatory, but you absolutely do not want to miss her classes. All of the questions on the exams are straight from lectures. Remembers EVERYONE'S name, and takes the success of the students really personally. A very sweet and understanding professor.
My favorite economics professor at Binghamton. Attendance isn't mandatory but you don't want to miss the lectures because she does a good job explaining the material in detail. She uses a textbook but it's not relied upon for everything. Reiterates ideas in class to make sure everyone stays caught up. Generally seems to care about her students.
Prof Wolcott is by far my favorite econ professor I've had at bing. She learns names and really cares about her students doing well. Some times her lectures are all over the place which makes it hard to study for tests but she always has review sessions and plenty of office hours beforehand to help students out. I loved her & would def take again
My favorite econ professor at bing. So caring and nice, really wants students to do well. Make sure you come to class, as she really tries to know every student's name. Tests are on the hard side, but she is a very nice grader and will not purposely screw you over with a difficult test and the curve was good.
Cant say enough good. Had her for 437 & 485 and if you work for it, it pays off and she sees that. She wants you to learn and if she sees someone not understand something, shell go over it. Very open to questions and by far one of the best professors Ive had at bing. If you study the notes in class youll do well.
Okay so Wolcott is definitely a great person in general but she SUCKS as a professor. Her lectures are all over the place, she belittle's students in almost every class, AND she has horribly vague exam questions. Lectures are dry and material is WAY harder than it needs to be because of her teaching style. I say avoid her at all costs tbh
Cannot say enough good about Wolcott. She wants you to LEARN and COMPREHEND econ-go to office hours and review sessions, she's incredibly welcoming. My only complaint would be her exams; all over the place and you cant understand what response shes looking for. She curves though, so no one ends up with a terrible grade. Totally take her class!!!!
Her lectures are boring and all over the place. There are no powerpoints, she just write on the board once in a while, and all her notes are super confusing when you look back at it. The textbook doesn't really help at all. Her exams are also hard and you don't really know what she's asking. There's a curve though. Overall, would not recommend.
People here say shes caring, but what I think hasnt been said enough is she is very smart, and I think shes done a much better job of explaining the material in a way that you can actually understand in a practical way which many professors dont do. Many just teach from the textbook, she told us real world ways it actually applied.
If you have high anxiety, this probably isn't the best class for you. Since we are online, she keeps us engaged by randomly calling on everyone throughout the class and you get graded based on your answer. She is a very very smart lady, but sometimes I think she forgets we aren't as smart as her and she belittles us. You will actually learn though.
If there is a chance you will be online for this class, do NOT take it. Prof asks everyone a question each class and you are graded on your answer. Material is difficult and she expects a lot from you. Midterms and final were oral zoom exams. Only goal the whole semester was to prevent cheating and didn't care we are in a pandemic. Avoid this class
I heard she was a good professor pre-covid, but since classes are online she's become obsessed with cheating. We had individual oral exams over zoom which made me debate dropping out. Every class she calls on everyone to answer a question at random for a quiz grade. I was so stressed over being called on that I couldn't focus on learning.
Great teacher, if you pay attention in class you will do fine. If you are struggling with a concept and ask her, she will go through it again with you. Test grading might be a little harsh but not crazy tough. Would take this class again
definitely one of the best professors in the department. she really drills concepts into your head. my only complaint is her grading. tests are moderately difficult but she grades pretty harshly in the way that she expects 150% effort in your answers. questions are occasionally vague
Professor Wolcott is a fantastic professor. I recommend going to her lectures as the textbooks are not really helpful - her lectures instead provide great information.
Probably the nicest professor I've had at Binghamton and teaches the material well. Class isn't particularly hard as long as you make sure you go to class as much as possible and take good notes.
Professor Wolcott is one of the true gems of Bing's econ department. This is the first economics class where I actually felt engaged and really learned something. Her tests are fairly difficult, but she gives a really good review night before every exam that essentially goes over everything. If you need an econ elective I highly recomend this class
Professor Wolcott is simply the best. She is by far the best professor in the economics department. Her lectures are entertaining and she genuinely cares about her students. Attendance is not mandatory however if you go to class and go to her office hours if you are struggling on a topic, there is no way you won't do well in the course.
Pretty easy class, you generally know what to expect on tests and not a whole lot of material is covered. Prof is sweetest professor you'll ever have and really wants to see her students succeed. Pay attention in class, she wants you to use exact words she uses on tests, and will pedantically dock points if you explain things differently
Attend every lecture and pay attention, writing good notes and you are good to go. She will say everything you need to know and explain it very clearly and well, leaving you feeling very prepared for the exams. Be sure to remember every detail and write it for the exams as well to get full credit. Learns every student's name so be sure to show up
Extremely kind & caring, wanting all students to succeed, learning everyone's name. Provides extra office hours & study guides with most of exam questions (w/o key) before exams. Besides paying attention to lectures, be sure to skim the plethora of readings for answers to all review questions. Article review & final paper doable & fairly graded
In order to succeed in this course, you need to go to all lectures. Do not skip or you will struggle. Great lectures, get ready to read outside readings, and Professor Wolcott is very accessible for extra time with her students outside of lecture.
Wonderful caring lady. It's clear she wants her students to try to put things together for themselves. Her Brightspace is practically useless, so skipping class is NOT an option. She is very unorganized so her lectures are kind of hard to get through but the content is interesting. If you took econometrics prior, this class will be a breeze.
Nice professor, wants to see you succeed. Lots of reading, so you really do have to stay consistent on them throughout the semester. Tried to teach us stats with mixed results. Homework is relatively easy, tests aren't bad. Overall too much work for an elective. Did we really need a final exam and final paper due one day apart?
Prof. Wolcott (listed Hanes on schedule) is genuinely amazing. A rare gem in the Econ department. She asks questions in class and calls on you, but they genuinely help you learn the material. She's super supportive and never puts you down if you get something wrong, she does it to get a gauge on what to clarify more. Tough exams but not impossible.
