Her enthusiasm for anthropology is obvious and very infectious. I've learned a lot about it and benefitted from her depth of knowledge. She's fair in her grading, asks more of you in your assignments because she knows you can do better, ie she doesn't slack off and won't allow you to either. Truly an excellent teacher. She certainly has my respect.
Dont do it. Hard to deal with and grades hard. Cant get even a B on any assignment! I just dont trust her
Susan is very bright and very charismatic. She knows alot about everything and class periods are very enjoyable. With that being said, her class is VERY difficult to do well in. I was really shocked to see how much I enjoyed her class compared to how poorly I actually did in it. You'd think that a high interest level would equate success not here
Her lectures were very interesting and easy to pay attention to. Her assignments and tests were difficult, but it's not impossible to get a good grade if you put some effort into it.
Amazing teacher very knowledgeable & fair. Lectures are fun and interactive w/videos. She definitely knows the subject+how to teach it. Easy to contact. 2 assignments, 2 tests that were fairly easy. Involves some thinking but had no wrong answer. Just follow her clear criteria and you will get an A for the effort. Gave good study guides for tests
I thought this class would be interesting, and it is but I have lost my interest in it since it is very hard to get a passing grade on her tests! everyone complained about grades and she did nothing! She also doesnt provide study guides anymore, and homework is 5, 5 page research papers... this class definatly stressed me out
She was a hard but fair teacher. She gave quick, good feedback on papers. The tests were difficult!
This class was very difficult for being an intro class. She tests on very minor details, and wouldn't help us even know what to study for. Basically you have to memorize six chapters a time. I spent a lot of time on this class, and still didn't do well. I don't feel like the teacher was fair at all.
Yes, Her class does involve work (this is college here people) but I ve had classes a lot more difficult than this and this is only my second year. Tests were not too bad just show up and pay attention you'll do fine, only assigned us two papers which were very interesting to do. Showed several videos which were good as well.
Uhm, for the student below that said she probably "hacked" website and wrote the first comment about herself. . okay dummy! That was me. She is a truly, truly AMAZING professor! I've had her for many classes!
She's super easy as an online prof, however, her tests are SO hard. She'll give you a partial name and expect you to know what she's talking about. Exams require ALOT of dedication, but the rest of the class, assignments, is SUPER EASY. I recommend class, but ye be warned.
Kind of a boring course, but Susan was great! She's very energetic, a bit eccentric, and definitely knows what she's talking about. There were 3 easy book reports and a slightly difficult take home final. She grades very fairly and is always available to help. Just read what's assigned, show up, and participate (have an opinion) and you'll do fine.
Online: Little attention paid to material outside of her specialization, 60% of exam questions on 10% of the material, and no curve even with average test scores in the 70's - ambiguous multi-choice exam questions full of typos. 25 pages of writing only amounts to 25% of your grade. Worst intro I've ever taken.
Online Class: This was the worst class ever. She doesn't care about her students. She doesn't provide study guides, practice tests, or reviews. Basically, this class was teach yourself and memorize 6 to 7 complete chapters because you have NO idea what the test will be on. Heavy written assignments only worth 25% of your grade. 75% based on tests.
Great at generating class discussions. She is definitely enthusiastic about the topics covered which generates a lot of provoking thought. Also will make time if extra help is needed. Very interesting course.
For an entry level class the work was not consistant. she expected way to much for the class. many of my friends agree that she seems like a graduate teacher. I expect to have to work for a grade, but when the teacher says read 6 chapters and take a test no idea what she wants, no lectures, no guide, it was impossible. not worth time invested.
This class was horrible!! I took it as intro level class for gen. ed. requirements and spent a great deal of time that amounted to me still not passing her tests. She has ridiculous expectations for her on-line class. I felt she was unfair and I will never take another course from her again.
Very Interesting class... I learned a lot. Tests were a little difficult but lectures were interesting. She has a funny sense of humor and is positive.
I have taken 7 online classes, but this by far has been the hardest, with very little guidance or interaction. 5 essays required with conflicting instructions that equal a large part of grade. Very unrealistic goals for an online class. Doesn't grade on a timely basis. Would learn & retain more with regular homework. I do not recommend this prof!
Good professor. You need to go to class to do well on the tests. Tests aren't easy but if you study what she tells you to you will do okay. Must read 2 ethnographies.
Susan keeps the excitement level up and the class discussion is always lively. I've had her for Anth 1000, Anth 3600, and Anth 3900. Fantastic professor!!
I loved her personality, and she is very well grounded in her profession, but she expects everyone to relate to anthropology on a PhD level. Her tests were ridiculously hard. She is fun to talk and listen to, but her class is way to hard.
Susan is passionate about what she is teaching, and it shows in how well you do! She was a great professor, and I will definitely take a class of hers in the future.
Wonderful professor! Energetic and helpful, she knows her subject well. The tests are on the hard side, pay attention and you'll do well.
Worst online class I have ever taken!!! Tests are ridiculous with vague questions that you had no ideal you were supposed to know. When I asked for help I received none. There is no way to know what to study for in this class because she picks random facts out of the text to test you on. RIDICULOUS!
She is a really good teacher, she is really smart and you can tell she is passionate about the subject, also she is very nice. Only had three assignments throughout the class, just keep up with the reading for class. She likes when people discuss the subject. All together a great class, would recommend it to anyone
Susan Young is actually a very good professor, she loves what she teaches, if you ask her questions she is very helpful on what to do. People might think the test are hard, but in all actually if you read like you are supposed to, and go to the lectures then its a breeze. I would highly recommend this class.
She was HARD!!! You have 2 assignments 100 points each & 2 exams 100 points each. I never missed class and went to SI at least twice a week if i don't get an 80% on my final and the last assignment i wont pass the class. I don't recommend.
If you went to class everyday and to SI you should pass no problem. She is an easy person to get along with and a wonderful teacher. You have her cell phone number that she welcomes you to call if you ever have a problem. She cares about her students and wants them to care about anthropolgy
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE! most of the class failed.Poor response to emails, not willing to give study ideas. She used a different book for her online class, which would explain why I could not find some answers in the book. Study guides ARE NOT helpful, tests are cumulative, & requires prerequisites english & computer classes even though this is generals
I LOVED this class and this professor. She was awesome!! Her lectures are thorough and clear, and she's always willing to spend time with students after class or set up meetings. Very enthusiastic about her topics and very willing to share her knowledge. The assignments are tough but worthwhile. Enjoy!
Susan is by far one of the best professors at Weber State. She expects you to work hard, but a good grade IS entirely possible from her. The lectures are very interesting and she is so fun and kind and willing to help. You HAVE to take this class. It is FANTASTIC. Best class I've ever taken. She loves the topic and makes it so much fun.
I took this class online & she expects you to know EVERYTHING. Her exams had SO many typos I spent half the time trying to figure out what she was even asking. Exam questions weren't from the text, but from websites not listed anywhere on the blackboard. I DON'T recommend taking any class from her. Weber needs to look for a new ANTH professor.
Dr Young loves to hear herself talk. Her tests are tricky and unclear. Very knowledgable. Talk the class if Anthropology is your deal, if not, find someone else.
Susan is a good instructor who truly cares about her students and has a passion for anthropology. She bases your grade on two papers and two tests. You will do well in her class if you are well written and attend lectures. I got an A, but be warned that her tests are very difficult and some of her test questions can be ambiguous.
The test are difficult but she really wants you to understand the material. Read you ethnographic novels early! You won't get a good grade if you write your paper at the last minute, but she grades fairly if you take the time to write it. Though I didn't read the textbook a lot, I probably would have gotten an A if I had.
Awesome teacher! Does very exciting projects, and has interesting lectures. She did not use a book, so attending every class is a must, but I am excited to take more of her classes in the future!
STUDY. She seems like she makes her test harder than they should be. She was nice. But, not my favorite teacher..
Susan is very knowledgable and is always willing to help. HOWEVER. If you have a heavy workload, do NOT take this class. This would be a great class for an anthro major or someone that doesn't have enough to do. There is only 3 assignments, but TONS of reading. Very easy to get behind and overwhelmed.
Do not take this class Online. 24 pages of writing and it only counts for 25% of grade. She is the worst online teacher I have had. Tests are hard for a 1000 class. I emailed her at least 5 times with no response. Worst class ever!
Very Unethical with her behavior. She want's to control the way you think by writing papers that confirms her what she believes. You won't learn Anthropology from her and she has a superiority complex.
Susan definitely opened my eyes to the fact that there are many ways of looking at the world besides my own point of view. The ideas that things other cultures do aren't wrong... they are just different. She is a stone cold fox as well. Unbelievably so...
I've taken 3 courses from Susan & they are work but entertaining. Going to SI is highly recommended for Intro. Her classes on religion are great. She sets up work that makes you think and prove that you can. Plan accordingly
Susan is a highly energetic, charismatic teacher. She will demand that you do the readings. She holds you up to your potential. She prefers precise information in your papers. Her finals are essay based but she gives you the tools to succeed. Reading intensive.
Took Magic, Shamanism and Religion from Susan and liked it. It wasn't what I was expecting though. More of a theory class than about magic, shamanism or religion. The grades were fair and the final was an essay test. She is looking for specific things in your papers so make sure you pay attention to what that is... In all, an ok class.
Worst class I've ever taken. Susan is really entertaining, but shouldn't be a professor. This should be taught as an upper division class, too hard to be intro class. What you learn in class has nothing to do with the questions she asks on the tests. I recommend you do NOT take a class from her. She is awful. I got a B, and Im a straight A student.
I took this class for a general in life science. The professor expected you to know too much information for exams and then tested very specifically. She mispells a lot which makes it difficult to read her tests and study materials. Discussions and assignments were fairly easy but tests were crazy hard!
She is terrible. She does not care at all about her students. She wants to be the smartest person in the room at all times. She goes off on tangents. I am open minded but she wanted you to do graduate level work in an introductory class.
Absolutely worst professor I've ever had. I took this class twice and had to withdrawal both times. First day of class she said to expect a C if we're taking this as a general only. Her tests are extremely hard. She is completely bias and believes her opinion is the only right one. I wouldn't recommend this professor to my worst enemy.
Heads up for anyone who wants to take this class, she doesn't give you a text book and doesn't fully teach you the material that is on the tests. How do I know this? I recorded each one of her lectures and reviewed each recording with the study guide . She doesn't fully explain the terms that are on the test. Fun, but fun isn't everything.
She is very knowledgeable about what she teaches, and will help if you ask. However, do not take any 1000 level class from her unless you are willing to work very hard. If the majority of the grade comes from multiple choice tests - drop the class. She is a terrible test writer! Most of the Q's come from notes. She is a hard a**
Professor Young is really friendly and her classes are fascinating. She's really enthusiastic about the material she teaches and is always willing to elaborate outside of class if you need clarification or have more questions. She's a great professor, I hope to take more courses from her in the future.
If you are not planning on being an anthropologist DO NOT take take this class from her. Attendance is mandatory, as she uses no text. Her lectures ramble and it is hard to know what will be necessary for tests. Her tests are ridiculous. Very tricky, despite what she says. Don't take her class just to fill gen ed, you'll regret it.
She really has a passion for her subject. More than willing to help if you are struggling. Made study guides long before the test so we could take decent notes. It's a hard class and all of the essays, discussions, etc. require critical and abstract thought. But that's anthro for you. Take very detailed notes, study well, and you'll be fine.
Susan Young is fun, smart, and easy to talk to. She definitely demands a lot of work, but it's worth it. I learned so much it's unreal. She got me interested in the subject immediately and kept me interested the entire semester.
I've taken a couple anthro classes form Susan now so i decided to take her botany class for a science credit. The tests are EXTREMELY difficult, even if you know the material the test questions are very broad and seem random, and the whole class is 3 tests and a 5-6 paper. She very smart & intelligent just not the best test-writer Learned a lot tho
Her class was very interesting. I could tell she is very passionate about the subjects she teaches. Her tests are just so dang hard. Study!
If you are taking this class purely for credit run away! She expects you to know (expert) everything you read that she has written. The tests are incredibly hard, and the class average was a failing grade for all 4 of them. I have never been so frustrated in all my student career. I love plants, but I have no interest now, she made me hate Botany
Confusing and tests are insanely hard. I thought this would be a fun class, WRONG!!! No lectures, no help, just read this material and take a test. Average on the tests was under 60%. Horribly slow grader and there is no way to try to improve your grade as you will not know it until after the semester is over! Run Far Away!!!
Lots of information, but you better be ready for it!
I did not select Young to be my professor because she came in mid-semester. She is a unique person. But her lectures and criteria are not easy for an entry level class. I found her to be finicky and too specific. While she was willing to work with us, her grading criteria is too strict and she is too much to handle for a generic class.
Here's the deal... Susan young is full of energy and keeps you interested in the class. She is very passionate about what she does. However, her class is a challenge for some. She bases all of her Exams on her lectures. If you love attending class and ACTUALLY learning then she is the right teacher for you. Overall I loved her class.
Professor Young is very passionate about the subjects she teaches. She can be a little overpowering if you aren't used to her personality. She grades very strictly and it is extremely challenging to get an A in her class. I love her enthusiastic lectures, but she's a little much for an intro class. Challenging if you don't love the material.
This class was incredibly challenging. I normally receive straight A's and received a C in this class. The tests are super confusing and she expects you to know everything about botany. She isn't very clear with what are going to be on the tests and just makes you fend for yourself. The averages for her tests were all failing grades.
The lectures are very dense but also very interesting! The tests are based off of the lectures. Pro Young knows her stuff! My gma is an archaeologist and I've traveled with her on some of her "digs" and Pro Young does a great job of talking about how the field truly is! Anthro is not for the faint hearted & neither is this class. Get ready to work!
this teacher is very hard yet you learn so much from her class.
She's very passionate about her field, and her lectures and discussions are very interesting. She's overall a funny, productive, and highly intelligent professor. Don't bother buying a textbook, and make sure you attend every class and write notes. Study well, because you're only graded on the exams and a notorious project.
If you like tests that make no sense with the information never covered, Dr. Young's class is for you! She likes to humilate students in class and ramble about things that are off topic completely or proven to be inaccurate. Also her field project is a joke and doesnt have enough info for one to do what she wants. She's awful.
She is a really fun instructor! Awesome lectures that are interesting and entertaining. She is always willing to work with you and help you with assignments, she gives you her phone # so you can call or text her whenever to get help. Her test were hard, just because of how she words question. Take notes and study and you'll be fine. Great teacher!
I've taken online classes but this one was a waste of time. Told prof. Young that the exam reviews and assignments weren't effective enough to succeed and she told me I wasn't trying hard enough. This class is taken too seriously for a general education requirement. Little to no effort was put into the class on her end which is discouraging.
Most unenjoyable class I've ever taken! Her tests will cover things she's never even talked about it class and there's no book to reference. Won't help when asked. I mean come on, how can you have a final exam and have a question with literally no question just answers! She's an entitled person who wants her students to fail.
Susan Young is an excellent professor! I loved her Anthropology 1000 course and will be taking another course with her in the near future! She definitely has a different way of seeing things than most folks at Utah, but she does her best to change your world view in a respectful way. Be ready to take detailed notes and to ask lots of questions!
She knows her stuff and will call you out if you are wrong, to her opinion... Her tests do have the material covered, but her exam study guides are very generic. Print the exam review out and take notes on that for lectures instead of just a notebook. The exams are hard because she writes the questions as if you are familiar with the major.
I did enjoy 1303 and thought Dr. Young was very passionate and interesting. I took the course online and think I would have enjoyed it more in person. I'll just echo what everyone has already said about tests being difficult. On written projects I received an A, but on tests I received a C at best, which brought my average down. Good class.
I feel like with this woman you either love her or hate her. She is a character. I really enjoyed the class and the material. She talks non-stop and will barely get a word in, but you can tell she really loves the subject. If you show up to class and take notes, you should be good.
Attendance is very necessary if you want to know whats going to be on the test. Professor young speaks very quickly and covers material very quickly. She tells lots of stories then jumps right back into the material so pay attention and take notes via the study guide so you don't miss topics covered. Also don't raise your hand. You're wrong. Haha.
I spent most of her lectures trying to figure out her layout, she misspelled everything, and when I submitted something it was always about how my grammar wasn't good enough and not about how I could improve in that certain topic. The mistakes she would point out would be something so small and honestly I felt like I was in another English class.
She 's pretty good at teaching, I guess. Not very good at making it clear what you need to know for her class and expects you to have a solid understanding of the field before taking the class.
If this professor was a starburst, she'd be a yellow one.
I went into this class expecting it to be hard, but not impossible. No matter how hard I studied I never managed to get the score I wanted on the exams. She was incredibly rude which made me not want to answer questions and she humiliated other students for asking questions that she deemed uneducated. Very disappointed.
Susan Young is perhaps the worst professor I have ever had. She is very obviously passionate about her fields, but in my opinion, she is entirely unfit to teach a classroom. She is often dismissive and rude to students that ask question or hold opinions opposite of her and does not fully cover material that appears on tests.
Susan Young is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She is harsh on graded and gets really frustrated by students asking her questions that is her fault. While you go through Chi for all of the test, she doesn't have that tool unlocked for her students on canvas. Then since we couldn't find the test dates, she lectured us about finding it
Susan Young is the absolute worst teacher. She wastes time during lectures, talking primarily about her dog and how great PETA is, which shows how little she cares about our time and just how uneducated she is. Our grade is made up of 3 exams and paper. Nothing else. When talking about Ebonics, she kept pointing at an African American student.
A lecture heavy course, no use of a textbook. Score was comprised of 10 assignments and 3 tests. The assignments were fair and graded fairly, not too difficult so long as you put forth effort. The exams were EXTREMELY difficult; you must memorize and understand the material inside and out. Responsive to questions/concerns outside of class.
She is absolutely terrible. The tests are insanely hard and you have to practically memorize everything little thing. There are hardly any assignments to help your grade. I highly recommend not taking this class.
I took this as a general education requirement and left failed, she acted like this was a anthropology major class. So much information, tough tests, and not very helpful.
I took Intro to Anthropology from Dr. Young and absolutely loved this class and her! She is very professional and has multiple ways to contact her always gets back to you. This was a lecture heavy class which I prefer with only three or four exams and a big writing assignments. No busy work.
She has interesting lectures, attendance isn't required but the majority of material is taught in class. Make sure to use the study guides as they as incredibly helpful when studying for the test.
Very unprofessional academic. Your grade almost entirely relies on tests. These tests are built out of confusing lecture outlines which are riddled with grammatical errors and unclear language. She puts this class on autopilot and obviously puts little effort into giving you tools to succeed. Avoid this gen ed class at all costs!
I have never quit a class before until now. I literally tried to make it work until the last day I could withdraw. Before if a class was hard I was able to see what questions I missed and change my studying accordingly. She does not let you see what you got wrong on the tests. If you are looking for a class for generals credit take another class.
My honest advice would be to not take a class from Professor Young. This was my first online college class, and I almost swore them off forever because of this course. Almost all of your grade comes from three tests on random material from one or two hundred pages of text. Not cool.
I am so mad I originally ignored the negative comments about this class. I agree with the complaints about the tests being hard, her lectures are hard to follow and do not prepare you for the tests. She refuses to work with you when you have a problem. I ended up getting the lowest grade I have ever had in this class. Very frustrating experience.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM THIS PROFESSOR!! I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took it online thinking it would be a great alternative to going into campus. I have a job and a family and am trying to get my degree. She is the WORST professor I've ever had. Tests are only open 5 days, so if you have a family, you will need a babysitter.
Worst professor I've ever had. She's absolutely ridiculous. If you don't use the correct word or phrase that she believes should have been used, she docks you heavily for it. She has an MD and she's teaching an entry level course, she needs to lighten up a bit. She cracks down on grammar when hers was just as bad on the exams and announcements.
This professor is incredibly condescending. All of the messages sent out by this professor are condescending and rude. She acts as if she is doing us a favor by lacking in communication and not posting exam dates into canvas. The exams and papers are easy.
Susan does not lecture well, she goes off on random tangents and doesn't teach what we need for the test. She's also awful whenever I attempted to contact her about a confusion I had. Due to COVID a class was cancelled and I was confused by her announcement so I messaged her to get clarification and she got upset at me.
Absolutely worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of taking a class by. Learned nothing because she would not stop talking about her personal life. If you ask her for help, she'll go off on another tangent about herself. She has a big ego and should not be allowed to teach.
I usually get A's. After I got a bad score on the first test there was no way for me to bounce back; she offers no extra credit and grades on almost nothing but the tests and one writing assignment. I felt like she had an adversarial relationship with her students and constantly assumes the worst of us.
Assignments weren't accepted late even if someone was having issues with technology. There were no opportunities to redo tests or assignments; Everything was expected to be perfect on your first try. Tests were difficult and certain questions were misleading.
she is the WORST teacher i have ever had. Her grading is so strict and she grades on grammar not even on botany. She never puts anything in the dashboard to see your assignments, but makes you find them in tabs. The tests are the hardest test I have ever taken and i'm majoring in neuroscience. RUN AWAY and do not take this class. She is the worst
