confused me about assignments. likes to focus on social issues a lot. room for improvement in teaching verbs. friendly.
Makes class very interesting, very nice, makes the class fun and easy to understand. Likes to get whole class involved in assignments :)
Very interested in Social issues. Excellent command of the language, and good at teaching to the class as a whole.
Teaches very nicely, She has excellent techniques to teach the class. Very creative!!
An inspiring teacher!
Wonderful teacher! She cares about you learning Spanish. Makes you use the language a lot. Interesting stuff about spanish culture. I loved her class! She makes you use your imagination a lot and expects a lot from the students.
She's a very good professor. Orig from Peru so Span is her native language. If you want to learn span take this class but there is a lot of work and an oral every chapter and one 10 min oral final. Not very difficult to do well in the class though.
I used to love spanish in high school then I had a horrible teacher who made me hate it. She restored my love for the language and now I am majoring in Latin American and Latino Studies! She is so wonderful A+++++++++++++++ always helpful, just great all around.
I had her for Spanish 3. She was nothing short of amazing. Don't miss out. Intelligence and warmth like hers is hard to come by.
Native speaker, so she knows a lot about cultural aspects of the language. Focuses a bit too much on social issues that don't always seem relevant. Overall great teacher b/c she doesn't just give away her grades; she makes sure you understand Spanish by using writing, speaking and other activites.
Best teacher I have ever had. Very accessable, warm, loving, and engaging. Her teaching style is such that she always pushes you, but sugar coats the grading a little. I read and write in Spanish much better than I speak, but I was never afraid to try in her class. She is very compassionate. Take her class!
she was rude and unsympathetic. she made me dislike spanish when i had planned on majoring in it and was in honors spanish all throughout high school. horrible teacher and rude woman.
I was just confused it her class. She was very unhappy with us and was very moody and it got into the way of her teacher. I love spanish, but I rather learn from the book then her
She'll push you, but she's a good teacher and you'll learn alot if you apply yourself.

I loved her. I can't even imagine her being any of the things mentioned by some others here. She was definitely not an easy professor but she made me love learning el espanol otra vez. She inspired me in the ways she taught,
She's so awesome. We're still in contact. I took two semesters with her *cheers*
Basically, all around cool teacher. Very friendly and helpful. The class isn't too difficult but not too easy to be boring. I'd definitely take a class with her again.
Susanna Ackerman is an EXCELLENT teacher and it is my only regret that I cannot take her next semester for Spanish 2. Very engaging and enthusiastic, she genuinely cares for her students and encourages them to learn to *speak* Spanish (which is why anyone should take Spanish in the first place.) I highly recommend her!
Susana is the BEST TEACHER I have ever had. If you want to learn spanish, i highly recommend her. She takes teaching very seriously, and she really feels the need to make sure that everyone suceeds. The classes are fun and all the hard work really pays off.
Totally liked her class. She is a good teacher, who is interesting and doesn't demand more than should be demanded of students. At first it's hard because she only speaks Spanish, but later on she explains some things in English. :) Overall good teacher!!
Susana is an awesome teacher. She is very organized. She explains ver well and easy to understand. She is very helpful and courageous in helping her students.Take her class, and if you have problems learning spanish, come often to her pffice hours. She is such a wonderful teacher. She is the best teacher I've ever had. ^__^

I have taken this teacher for two semesters now. Although she will not be at the JC in the fall, (she is going to spain) i highly recommend that you take her in the next spring semester. She is extremely warm and caring and she really wants you to learn the material...spanish is hard and you have to study...but she is very willing to help. Great!!!
This class involves alot of class participation, speaking, reading, presenting, and acting all in spanish. Not alot of homework, tests are fairly easy, as long as u go to class everyday. Shes nice but she dosent like it when u don't participate with the class, and will call u out and test u in front of everyone. EASY C.
Wonderful! Wether this is your strongest subject or you are brand new to it, Susana is helpful and understanding.
She's the head of the Dept. I knew that the class was going to be hard, but she seemed to pick favorites. If you new spanish or were a fast learner then she liked you, but if you didn't then she hated you. I never got on her bad side, but I saw plenty of other people made fun of in class. She expected too much from a begining span, don't take her!!
Prof. Ackerman is really enthusiastic about teaching spanish. she speaks 3 languages fluently, so her teaching is derived from her own learning, which is great. Tests aren't bad, always a B. She can be a bit critical if you haven't done the work the night before..but she goes over everything well. Unfortunate down fall, participation is mandatory!
She is adorable! She loves her job and she is amazing at it. Definitely take her class!
She is the awesomest teacher ever! If you love spanish you will love susana!
She is not the nicest person ever. She kind of puts on a front and if you annoy her, you're gonna get it. She's unclear with assignments and always just says "You should read the syllabus!" even though a good portion of the class is clearly confused. I've found the books and website more helpful, and certainly more approachable, than her.
not a quality instructor. rude and picks favorites. ESL teachers have even sat in on lecture--mention her shortcomings and poor teaching method. Also, her syllabus is more like a disclaimer; not clear at all. hope the jc is more selective when hiring next time
I loved this chalenging class. Tests were like spanish two dificulty with span 4 content. When ever i got one back, i was pleasantly surprised with an A. She uses personal stories and experiences sometimes and helps expand your understanding of Latin America, especially Peru, where she is from. Fun, clever, kind, a worthwhile class.
Susana is an amazing Spanish teacher! I have been teaching English for 25 years, and she uses all of the "best practices" to inspire learning. A high level of participation is required, and she consistently keeps the class engaged. Reading and writing assignments are relevant. Her teaching is first rate, and she is extremely helpful and clear.
She's just the best. Her accent makes her really easy to understand. She is a native of Peru and knows a lot about Latin American culture. I've learned so much from her and recommend her to anybody taking Spanish. She's also so kind and remembers the names of every one of her students. The best professor you could ask for!
Susana really knows how to teach. The class was difficult, but I learned a lot.
Susana is a wonderful teacher, loves teaching Spanish and likes to get you interested in it too. Be prepared to be called on pretty much every single day. A ton of work for this class. We also did several oral presentations in class. She is really tough on memorizing the smaller orals and does to like people to read from a script. A great teacher!
This is a great professor. I took Spanish 1 with her, and now Spanish 2 (which I think she enjoyed teaching more, though I could be wrong). Her class is not easy. You need to stay up with the work, set aside time for this class, and have good attendance. She is fair and willing to help. The classes become like a family, so it isn't uncomfortable.
The sylabus was unclear. I did the assignments as they were listed and somehow whatever I did wasn't quite what she wanted. She'd say "that wasn't what I meant", well how do I know that? I did what the homework sheet said to do. The worst thing was she had clear favorites from the first day and she treated and graded them differently.
Fabulous teacher, super nice and easy to work with. She makes sure to teach to all levels of students in the class.
Susana is one of the best language teachers I have ever had. She is a native of Peru, so she spends a lot of time on culture of Latin America as well as the basic grammar and phonetics of the language. I would recommend having her for any level of spanish because she speaks in spanish most of the class, which is the best way to learn a language.
Susana is such an amazing teacher! I struggled a lot in her class because I never took Spanish in high school but she was extremely helpful, kind, and considerate. Without a doubt she is one of my favorite teachers at the JC. Yes, the class is hard but she totally makes it worth it!
Easily the best Spanish teacher at the JC. She goes out of her way to assist anyone who asks for help, but her class is challenging.
If you want to not only learn the Spanish language but also about the culture then this class is a must! Susana has a genuine interest in the well-being of her students and makes sure no one is falling behind. She is always available and makes an extra effort for students who want to get the most out of Spanish, inside and outside of class.
Susana is a wonderful teacher. This has been my third semester with her. While I heard lots of complaints about other Spanish teachers, I have always appreciated Susana's patience for students she sees wanting to learn. I have truly learned so much Spanish, and in a safe environment. Do the work, you'll get the rewards. It isn't easy, but worth it!
Don't fall behind! Professor will help you but the class moves very fast. Do the online homework and labs per the schedule, it REALLY helps. The course is difficult but you will learn Spanish!
Totally rude and completely unhelpful. We did not get along at all.
Susana is the best spanish teacher I've ever had, the class does move fast but thats expected when you have to learn any language. Was always polite and helpful but DOES EXPECT YOU TO PRACTICE. you will not do well if you do not do your book work. Would recommend her in a heartbeat
She is really helpful and fun. I feel like I learn a lot, but it's kind of hard.
Profesora Ackerman es muy interesante. Ella es mi profesora de espanol favorita. La clase es muy divertida y facil, pero hablamos espanol mucho. If you want to really learn this language, then you take Susana Ackerman. There's no better way to learn Spanish than by speaking Spanish. You'll learn to love the language as much as the teacher.
She is a wonderful teacher! Very willing to work with you, but you must do your homework, which is assigned everyday. She uses a lot of spanish in class, which I found very helpful. I plan to finish out my spanish classes with her!
Excellent teacher! Her classes are challenging but so fun. She uses creative ways to teach language, and puts great spirit into it. She has high expectations of her students, and you have to do all the work - and you have to speak Spanish! She is encouraging and you will want to learn more.
Profesora Ackerman is a great spanish teacher. There is a lot of homework, but if you really want to learn spanish, this is the teacher to take. I plan on taking her classes all the way to spanish 4!
She is a great teacher, if you want to learn Spanish and have fun this is the class to take. She will pick on you and make you practice your spanish in front of the class which can be unnerving but it helps a lot. She is a lovely person.
Susana Ackerman is the faculty member of the year for a reason! She is super helpful and interesting. Most of the class is spoken in Spanish, which helps a lot in your studies. I have never had a teacher as great as Profesora Ackerman. Definitely TAKE THIS CLASS! All teachers should learn something from her! ¡PERFECTO!
Profesora Ackerman is the best Spanish teacher at the SRJC!
Susana is one of the better teachers at SRJC. She is passionate about the subject and has a genuine interest in students learning and excelling in her classes. She will go out of her way to help you if needed. Her syllabus can be a bit disorganized. I would most definitely recommend her as a Spanish teacher.
A great teacher! The class is difficult, but she does everything that she can to make it fun and interesting. Make sure that you study and turn in all your homework on time, and you'll get a good grade. Definitely take from her
Susana Ackerman is an excellent teacher! One of the best I have ever had! If you want to learn Spanish then this is the class to take! You do need to do your work and study, but she is very helpful and her class was fun and interesting. She seems to love the subject. She has a great personality!
Best spanish teacher ever. She let me take my final later then everyone else and I was so nervous.(I'm not the greatest test taker)she saw I was nervous and gave me a hug in the middle of my exam. She told me whether I do well on the final or not, my work through out the semester earned me an A. This sums her up in a nutshell!
Profesora Ackerman is a great Spanish teacher. She's funny and explains her points very well. She tries to get everyone involved in class and brings in food to make it fun and cultural!
The best teacher I've had in any class ever, and I have a master's degree. She cares about ALL her students, and is extremely sensitive to diversity. She is totally dedicated, has a great sense of humor, creates interesting fun curriculum, and makes the class a total joy. If you really want to learn Spanish, she's the best!
Professor Ackerman is one of the kindest and most giving people I have ever met. Her teaching is very dynamic. Regardless of my mood coming into class, I always enjoyed the lessons! She makes an effort to create community among the students and made me feel very welcome. If you put in the work, you will leave her class with a good grasp on Spanish!
Fabulous teacher! Class was a balanced mix of native Spanish and non-native speakers, and Susana does an exceptional job in teaching to both groups while making all feel welcome and creating a strong sense of community in the class. She cares about each student and is totally dedicated to her classes. Incredible teacher!
Easily the best Spanish teacher I have ever had, this coming from someone who attended a Spanish immersion school. No need to give her a brilliant review everyone else has too! :D
I love Susana with all my heart and soul! She is so inspiring and I feel honored and lucky that I have been able to take Spanish 1-4 with her. If you truly want to learn then take her classes! She is a native speaker and really cares about the subject and students.
She was always supportive and understanding. Great teacher, she takes the time to learn your name and she makes sure everyone is learning something. Great teacher!
Prof. Ackerman is passionate about students learning Spanish. She will work with you on any extra help that you need. There is a lot of busy work, but it pays off to do it. She is very strict about showing up to class, and being on time. I would recommend her to anyone serious about learning Spanish.
Susana is awesome!! She is such a nice lady and super helpful if you don't understand. She makes learning the language fun! I HIGHLY recommend taking her classes. I will be going on to Spanish 2 and won't be taking that with any other teacher!
Ackerman is a wonderful instructor. I highly recommend her! Attendance is crucial. Same with the Supersite plus (SST). Her teaching style is fun And creative.
I took spanish 2 with Ackerman last semester, and she was absolutely wonderful. She really cares about her students, and wants them to succeed. She will encourage you, and give you additional resources and suggestions if you are struggling. I am very excited to take spanish 3 with her, she is truly a wonderful teacher.
Susana Ackerman is SO sweet. She really cares about you learning the material. What is important is to do the work and show progress; I thought I wasn't going to get a good grade, but I exceeded my own expectations. The class requires effort and lots of assignments, so stay on top of those. She's an excellent instructor.
I absolutely love Profesora Ackerman, she has expectations for her students, and definitely makes you work for your grade, but you can tell that she loves her job. She definitely wants all her students to succeed, she based our final exam off of where the class was at, which I thought was very considerate. Absolutely wonderful teacher and woman.
Me gusta profesora Ackerman. She is a great teacher, really cares and connects with her students, wants you to succeed, and offers extra credit to get your grade where you want it to be. I learned so much more than I thought I would.
One of the most incredible teachers I've ever had, Susana is supportive, kind and motivating, a professor who truly makes so much effort to ensure your success. She adapts to her students needs and is honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. Her class was challenging but extremely rewarding. I would highly recommend her to anyone.
One of those teachers you'll always remember, she is a great person and a great teacher. I highly recommend taking a class with her if you genuinely want to learn Spanish. It is not easy by any means, but not grueling or unfair either. She is extremely supportive and helpful and gets really enthusiastic when you do well.
Susana was absolutely fantastic. One of the most personal, kind instructors you would ever have. She meets you where you are with your needs and helps you go above and beyond to really grasp the language. It is not an easy class, but if you do the work and show up to class and make an effort to learn, it is a breeze.
Wonderful enthusiastic teacher. She wants every one to succeed. She is very smart, knows 4 languages herself, understands where the pitfalls are for us English speakers. If you really want to learn the language, she is the best.
Susana is a compassionate, intellectual, and wonderful instructor. She really cares about her students and if you put in the effort she will help you succeed. There is a lot of busy work for assignments outside of class and she isn't the easiest grader but I learned SO much from here. Truly a gem of a professor and person.
She is the best Spanish teacher I've had. She's very caring and respectful towards her students and encourages you to do better and cares about the success of her students. She's passionate about the material and explains it well. She creates an inviting and warm environment in class. I love her.
What an amazing professor! Susana is compassionate and truly cares about the success of her students. She made learning Spanish a fun thing. Lots of partner work and class discussion. That being said be prepared for lots of homework and studying! Highly recommend taking a class with Susana if you want to challenge yourself learning anew language.
She gives an excessive amount of work. Keeps you over time in class. Doesnt tell you what the homework is until 30 seconds before class is ending and people are packing up. Also will email you the day before class to add on homework. Honestly just kind of a mess of a class but she has a great personality
Susana has helped me understand Spanish than any other teacher I had, but I do think her grading is a little too confusing, strict and unfair. She also assigns a huge group project at the end of the year and my grade might be affected because my groups actions and when I confronted her about it she didnt really help so be aware.
I took her class years ago but now I'm about to graduate and have taken more Spanish classes with different teachers it made me realize that she actually wasn't a great professor. She was asking too much for a beginning level class and her grading system was too difficult. My Spanish Senior Seminars were easier than her assignments!
Great professor!
