She is great: plenty of knowledge, humor,and desire to teach.
She is very explanatory with her teaching and her lessons. She is fair with her grading and understanding when it comes to students having difficulty with her assignments. She is definitly an asset to the college and I was very pleased with her class.

Dr.Chewning knows her subject and is very good at getting her point across. I enjoyed her class and feel somewhat confident about writing papers.

I thought Dr. Chewning was really awesome! I loved her class! It was really fun and I was never bored. She has lots of office hours, and is pretty accesible. Also, she is really flexible with paper topics, and the topics are definately interesting. Funny
Expect to write at least 5 or 6 paper, and when you finish with her class you will know how to write a perfect paper.
She's very nice, but not on grades. To do well u have to do everything the way she wants it exactly. She knows her stuff is helpful, tells u things sometimes u don't need to know for test or exam. So learn how to find what u do need from what she says!

Dr. Chewning is a great teacher. She knows alot about British Literature.
Very interesting and engaging professor. Class is upbeat and topical. Tough on punctuation and grammar, but is constructive in her criticisms of papers. If you are a guy realize that you are in a feminist environment. Discussion groups are great albeit a bit cliquish. Take this class w/a friend.

I took Women in Literature with Dr. Chewning and found her to be very interesting. I loved listening to her lectures because she really knows her stuff. My only negative comment is that she's a pretty tough grader. I had a A-B on all of my papers and somehow I ended up with a C+ in her class. Oh well, at least she didn't put me to sleep!
Took ENG COMP 2 She is a really tough grader!!! Not the best communicator, some e-mails did not get answered at all. Her lectures are interesting and well put together, although I only attended the extra lectures as I took the course online. I would not take her again because I was frustrated with her not being responsive.

I would not recommend Dr. Chewning for an online instructor. She doen not respond in a timely manner to e-mails and especially does not return papers quickly. It is very difficult to improve on your technique when you do not get graded papers back with enough time before the next is due. I will not take her again.
She gives too much work and then does not grade them in a timely fashion so that by the time the next paper is due...you have no idea what needs to be corrected. Very unfair grader in my opinion.
The best is for You not to be absent, do the All the work and study for the test.
run, don't walk, from this professor if you're unlucky enough to see her name on your schedule. Ridiculously, unfairly-hard grader, and what's worst is that you end up with no idea how you got such a bad grade, and no idea why she didn't like your work. I'm an A student, and got a C+ from her. screwed up my average. Don't do it!
If you like torture, and enjoy pain, look forword to going to the dentist, perfer no anestetic during surgery, love walking on broken glass barefooted, while carrying Chris Farley on your back, and juggling flaming no handle swords whistling yankee doodle dandy, then this is the class for you....
You will have more confidence and knowlege in her cats and Barry Manilow than in your writting. You hardly recieve feedback on papers, if you do poorly on papers you are reffered to the ALC to get help, when she is the one that is suppose to help you. Not encouraging, changes her syllabus more times than I change my panties. I dont reccomed.
The worst teacher ever. She is late with checking papers and sometimes does not check them at all. If you would like to take her you might as well throw salt in your eyes.
If the purpose of your education is to learn this class will exceed your expectations. If you are looking for an easy grade with a minimal amount of work it is not for you. I registered out of necessity and walked away with a passion for the subject. The class was lively and engaging. She goes beyond just presenting the material... she educates.
Prof. Chewning has a lot of haters. Well I guess I'm going to be 1 of the first to say she isn't that bad. Yes she is challenging and the whole syllabus thing was a little ridiculous but you know what? She's understanding and will try to help you out. A close friend of mine of about 11 years passed away. Prof. C is the only prof. who cared. KC

Excellent class. She expects a lot from her students, but she's really dedicated and wants to help. I learned a lot about writing -- what else do you expect from a Writing class?
great professor. she was tough and the class was definitly alot of work but it was always interesting. She has a great sense of humor and is definitly alot of fun. I suggest taking this class if your ready to work. She is also very understanding
This professor assigned alot of work ,but does not give your work back on time. I still have assignments that I completed in October that where not graded through the entire semester. This professor is concerned about her paycheck not the students.

While she may be a bit delayed while returning papers, Sue Chew is a fantastic person, Always very friendly, humorous, and was very involved in making our classes more interesting. For example we would read "The importance of being ernest" then follow it with a film. Very compassionate and fair! JUST DO THE WORK !
If you feel that you are entitled to a good grade just because you show up for a class, this is not the class for you. Dr. Chewning is a serious instructor who knows her stuff, regardless of whether she gets your paper back in a timely fashion or not. Are you serious about your education? You wanna learn something? Take any class she teaches

this teacher was horrible! so unorganized, loads of assignments to do and never posted them until a few days prior to when they where due. it was her way or no way! class was worthless, all we spoke about were cats and car engines, deff not a teacher you want to have!

the fact this woman is allowed to teach tells you a lot about the adminsitration of this school. They dont care how bad she is. She doesnt return work quickly, she wastes class time, she doesnt seem to know what she is doing and she isnt friendly to more than 1 or 2 students in the class. 2 people complained and nothing came of it.
You can tell by the comments who does not like to work! She give quite a bit of work and you cannot be lazy. If you communicate with her regarding your revisions she will tell you exactly what you need to do to get an A. Not easy, but she is a good professor if you are looking to learn something!

Dr.Chewning is a professor who cares about her students and I learned a lot from her class. She is very helpful and her instructions are very detailed and useful.
Unbelievably difficult.Does not return papers or grade your work timely. You will receive a grade for the first few responses,and then nothing at all.Very hard to track down,voice mail is always full.Blames online software for her lack of response to your emails.Went to the Dean of Academics due to her lack of response, received a C as final.AWFUL!
The worst. Lazy, unfriendly and incompetent. The higher ups clearly dont care about students if they let this woman teach, much less be the dept. chair. You can complain to anyone about her. She is boring but funny at the same time. Knows her stuff, if you take this class you will have to read a lot plus 3 papers due. Very hard to get a A, but if you do your best you will pass or get B.
I had her for Freshman Education online and had the worst experience with her. She has only graded a few assignments (unfairly too), doesn't reply to e-mails asking her questions. She sometimes did not even post all of the resources you need to complete the assignments. For a class that should be an easy A, it was very frustrating dealing with her.
I took her in fall 2009 online, and, regretfully, she is the worst professor I have ever encountered. Never followed her own deadlines, was rude, and extended our class 2 weeks into break! Little or no feedback on papers; she has not even graded midterms 2 months after giving them! Please spare yourself a headache, and avoid taking her classes.

I took Eng 101 online for the Fall 2009 semester. I cannot believe this woman is still teaching. She is horrible, no help, rude and gets very upset when a student ask question. She is an insult to all good teachers in the Union County College.I have to wonder if maybe she's a **** to minority, donot waist your money with this teacher.

Very tough professor. Assigns tons of homework and was a little difficult to reach for feedback. Did do well in her class, but wouldn't take her again due to the heavy course load.
Summer Online. Incompetent. MIA for most of class. Ignored emails, failed to grade midterm, final, papers and much of homework. Never gave promised help. She had lots of excuses - Internet out, broken bone in hand, secretary out, registrar's fault - never her fault. I worked hard and expected her to do her job (she didn't)- very upsetting.
Knows her stuff. She gets emotionally erratic when questioned and is very arrogant. You'll get little feedback on papers and don't believe the syllabus; she does not allow you to meet set up appointments. Expect her to come in late with interminable excuses. If you work hard avoid her. Looking to get by? Moderate work gets you a B.
Dr. Chewning is a great professor for COMPETENT STUDENTS. She might come off as "arrogant" but she is presenting a University attitude at UCC. She is serious about her subject and does not take lightly to rude self-entitled students. There is A LOT of work. Read the other comments and find all of the mistakes. Bad comments come from bad students.
As a professor, why assign a BUTTLOAD of articles to write a response to when they date back to 1998,and when you, the professor can't keep up with the amount of work yourself?!As a professor, WHY do take a question as an insult?WHY WHY would I have gone forward with this professor?Don't care how intelligent she is, she is a nightmarish person.
Took her as an online course and she really isnt good with it. If you get lucky she responds at least a week later for any emails. Grading took her weeks and all you do is response after response along with 4 papers. if you do what is given and keep up with it you'll be fine. If you need help and ask many questions dont take her online!!
I actually gained an interest in poetry after taking Dr. Chewning's poetry class. All we had to do was read poetry and do a poetry response each week. We also watched a few short films. She talks a lot about poetry/poems in the class and you can tell she has a great love and knowledge of poetry.

Without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. Takes weeks to grade your work, if she grades it at all, is rude to students who ask legitimate questions, very arrogant. A nightmare. I don't know how she still has a a job.
Very knowledgeable about her subject but speaks on it like a nerd at a comic-con convention. If you have no prior knowledge to the subject do not register for her class. It for the most part is a monologue in which you will write a lot of responses, few papers and not until after you can't drop you'll know where you stand.

She is very intelligent and knows her subject but she is a terrible teacher. Assigns a lot of work but does not grade it or give feedback. She changes deadlines last minute, which is frustrating. She does not respond to emails, she is nasty when questioned and constantly looses track of what she assigns. Avoid her class, not worth the aggravation!
It is true that she is an absolute horrible grader in terms of giving things back, but if you are confident in your work, you have nothing to worry about. Don't take her during the summer, she expects the same work load for summer kids as her regular semester kids (OUCH!). She is brilliant in her field,but needs to focus more on grading. Good Luck!
Shes a nice lady and all but when it comes down to grading she puts her two cents in and is very ananl about it.
Really enjoyed the class. Dr. Chewning was great with the class. I looked forward to class each week. Dissapointed in grading. We only received 5 grades at once and then nothing. This class has been over for a week and no final grades. I realize it is a honors class and we should know how we are doing, but it would have been helpful to know.

This professor goes by 6 papers which are not that hard but she is a tough grader and takes forever to give your grades back. She talks the whole class time which makes the class easy. She uses ANGEL for responses every week. Mandatory attendance. She isn't hard but isn't easy. I wouldn't take her again..
GREAT TEACHER! She is extremely helpful with all of the assignments, and is funny, too. Truly a dedicated teacher, loves her job, and students benefit from this. I really wish I could take her for my next English class but our schedules don't work. I would highly recommend this teacher, easily my favorite teacher this semester!!

Assigns papers but never discusses them or grades them. Assumes dates are posted on syllabus but syllabus does not follow what is said in class. Says things about grading or assignments and forgets it ever happened. Nothing graded is handed back any time soon if at all.
Dr. Chewning is a great professor that is serious about her class. There will be a lot of work (this is a college class) you have to apply your self. She is tough on grading but that is only to make you better, thats what professors are here for, to help make us better students. I enjoyed her lectures, shes funny and caring.
She seems like if I would've taken her English class, I would've enjoyed ger because she's knowledgeable and cheeky. However, taking her UCC 101 course felt useless. I didn't learn anything and she was always a mess. Granted, I did take a blended course, which may have made it even worse. I don't recommend her for UCC 101.
I would not recommend her. She is very strict & always has excuses for not logging on or grading papers. She never replies to emails. Her grading is also tough. DO NOT TAKE HER! TTHE WORSE PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD!
I had read the reviews for Dr. Chewning after I had already registered for a summer session with her, and walked in expecting the worst, especially since I was taking an anatomy class at the same time. She's not even close to the villain that these reviews make her out to be! Read, participate, and ask questions. That's not too much to ask, is it?

So far, wishing I had a different professor. I've spent over 4 hours on each paper that has been assigned and still can't manage to land higher than a B. She offers no feedback as to what I am doing wrong. Also seems to play favors in the most ridiculous ways and I always feel like I am bothering her when I ask any questions. Not recommended.
British Lit was not at all an easy class but I didn't expect to coast. Get comfortable with a lot of writing assignments and make it a point to attend lectures(Dr. C is funny and kind in class, though weirdly passionate sometimes about gender roles in Chaucer's time). I worked hard and was treated with courtesy and taken seriously as a result.
Worst experience I have had yet with a professor. Do yourself the favor and take another professor. ENG101 is a lot of work. A professor who doesn't value your time and doesn't care about wasting it makes it harder. Never responds to emails and doesn't grade papers that you need back in order to complete other assignments. Not worth the headache.
Terrible experience! Chewning expects graduate level work from students in an entry level class. She is unfairly tough in grading. You can't ask her any questions or she acts personally offended and she has a terrible attitude. She claims you can ask for help but does not respond to emails until after assignments are due. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!

I took this class online and I do not recommend choosing her as your professor. She grades very harshly but does not give any feedback to improve your future work. Assignments and papers are rarely graded in a timely manner. You are pretty much on your own with her. Don't expect any guidance or help.

Honestly, she is not an easy A, but shes not hard either, as long as you do your work, do essay corrections and participate you'll have an A. She does not care about when you hand papers in, which is good. She is funny, and always have new stories to tell you. I finished the class with an A, and definitely enjoyed it.

Whenever there was an issue with any paper I wrote, she would never clarify WHAT the issue was. She graded extremely harshly for no reason. I got an A in (an even tougher) English 102 class, but (my lowest grade ever!!!) a C+ in her class.
First off, she talks and talks and talks and it never seems to be specifically directed to the assignment. Her grading policy is confusing, she asks for one thing but grades you based on other things. She gives too much work in very little time with no explanation. Don't expect to learn anything or improve your writing in this class. Feedback is rare and late. She's usually unprepared for class so relevant class work/discussion doesn't take place. The grading is pretty tough too. She might just not show up to your class or cancel a meeting with you randomly. Find a different professor if you want to do well.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. She would yell at students for asking questions and always came into class a big, sweaty,mess. Never responded on time and waited till the end of the semester to grade everything. I pray that she reads these and changes her way because she is a mess and does not deserve to be a college professor.

She gives a lot of work but if you get it all done and hand in the revised papers you'll get a decent grade. Great professor. She is difficult yes, and is not one of those easy A professors. Her style of grading is different yes, but she does in fact give back useful information and is willing to work on improving your work. She's passionate about the work she does, and if you show her any interest she'll be more than willing to help.

I am really kind of turned off by all the negative comments of her being disrespectful and being disorganized I didn't detect any of that about in her class. Professor Chewing was such a good inspiration to me I learned a lot of class I become a better reader become a better writer and definitely a much-improved Jeopardy player.
Professori compassionate about literature. You will , or have heard he say, "I love Literature. My hope is at the end of this semester, you'll at least like it. She is always available, arrives early in the afternoon, and has an open door policy, and indeed, her door is actually always opened. Would recommend her. Interesting and flexible.

She is the best professor i taken her class already. i intently was able to get my writing and reading skills to such a big improvement to where i was before. She is very inspiration and the comments she put on the assignments are very helpful to improvements.
Super nice, lots of homework. Really obviously cares a lot about literature which makes her lectures super awesome. Not an easy A by any means, you have to do the work, but she does work with you.
Professor Chewning is a good professor and a nice professor. She doesn't hand out A's but she will give you the opportunity to earn them. She is very fair to say the least. She is also very passionate for literature and there is a tremendous amount to learn from her overall.

Had to take course online and was not very good. Took very long to grade papers, was very rude replying to messages.
So much work and so little to show for it. Between Papers, Discussion and Exams, I think I must have written over 100 pages. Yet, I did not learn anything new. There were no comments on my work, just bad grades. She did not teach me one single thing about writing.
She's harsh tbh and i wouldnt recommend her for freshs or sophs. It takes forever for her to hand back your papers

Okay I loved her personality and everything but she gives us essays every week and discussions every week too and the one thing you will remember from two things is an Author named Richard Rodriguez and that even if you put your heart and soul int something doesn't mean you will get a good grade. But I have to admit that she lenient on dead lines.
So Dr. Chewning overall is a great professor. She doesn't give easy 100's and stuff and makes you earn your grades. There's discussions and responses due weekly which is a great opportunity to raise your grade higher along with her essays. She helps with format's and gives you ideas to help do your essays.
I enjoyed Dr. Chewning's class a lot. The topics which she covers in her lectures are very interesting, and the group projects which she makes us do are a lot of fun. She can be very late when it comes to grading papers and essays; but overall she is a very kind and understanding professor.
I took Professor Chewning's class spring semester and ended up dropping the course because her workload was too much to handle along with my other classes and obligations outside of school. If you are a busy person or work a reasonable number of hours, I don't advise taking her class. A nice lady, but lots of time-consuming homework.

Took this online course as a requirement. She gives tons of work that is due at the end of each week. Be prepared to read and write alot!
Took her class online & it was not my fav. This woman has no regard for people with jobs or children. The only way to pass this class is by literally having nothing else to do but her work all day. She is not present or interactive & she runs her class on a master level like a literature class vs composition. She does not give 100's, literally.

DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA!! She takes forever to grade, she goes on rants about stuff that's not relevant to the class. She puts the assignments into canvas before the semester even starts so you don't get any reminder, she'll change the dates on assignments without telling you and give you a zero for it.
Just don't! One might ask : "how bad could she be?" Well, for one, you will most likely never get a 100 on anything she grades. Secondly, she rarely responds to emails. WORST professor ever. She and I quote doesnt believe in As. Because no ones writing is perfect. The highest grade youll get is a B/B+ and thats only if it is extremely good. Highest possible grade is an 85 yet she grades out of 100. You will not ever get an A in her class. Her grading system is bogus. BEWARE.
Out of all my classes she gave the most work. She is definitely a tough grader and gives many papers to write which will basically count as 50% of your grade. She also give extra credit which is good. she grades papers late. Sometimes she will give feedback back and sometimes she will grade without giving any type of feedback.
Professor Chewning is so tough. Her grading criteria is insane. If you want to keep you GPA good then don't take her, get ready to write and even if you write an extremely good paper you still wont get an A on any paper you ever write. I only took 2 classes and still ended up with a C. She takes forever to grade papers.
Be prepared to write 2-4 200-1000 word papers every single week in between your midterm and final drafts and corrected papers due every other week. I dropped after 2 weeks of not having any of my work graded, how is anyone supposed to write new papers without getting feedback on the previous ones? Save yourself time and pick a different professor.

All you need to know is pick a different professor because if you have to go through the semester with her your life will revolve around writing nothing else this class was hard and too much writing if you want to get an A or even a B I suggest picking a different professor.
This was my first online class, being that this was a reading and writing comprehensive class there was defiantly a lot of both. Aside from all the reading & writing involved the material that Dr. Chewning had us read was by far the best. I greatly enjoyed all the works she had us read. My writing improved a lot. Challenging class but worth it!
She doesn't do her job very well. Chewning's class will not help you write better or stimulate your mind in any useful way. If you find yourself in her class, I would brace myself for constant frustration. The selection of literature, and writing topics is clearly part of a 'Smelly' Agenda. She has many cats. Expect to hear stories about that.
Dr. Chewning takes over the class curriculum with her own personal views. She doesn't focus on the curriculum and makes the entire class focused on her celebrity crush on Roxane Gay. She also has no consideration for your personal life or other classes. Do not take her if you want to have your sanity by the end of the semester.
If you want to keep your gpa up do not take her class. This Professor is very difficult and hard. She doesnt give As, she grade late, she dont grade fair. if you get a 71% is a D+ which should be a C.
AWFUL PROFESSOR. She barely made it to class, but that's not the worst part, she attended class, but for two months straight every other day she would be at least 15-20 minutes late and would make up excuses, but when a student came late she would mark them late. I tried so hard even went to her office hours for help I never received a fair grade.
She is the the worst English professor, i've ever had. For papers that state your own opinion, go by her opinion to get a decent grade because she'll argue it with you to the max until you eventually change it. she does not give helpful comments, if your paper is wrong she'll just point it out instead of telling you what you did wrong.

By far the worst English class of my life! This class is incredibly boring and has an incredibly unlikable professor teaching it. Constantly came late to class, punishes you and looks down on you for having a different opinion and overall is guaranteed to drop your GPA.
Shes honestly so rude its disgusting. I did all my papers and still managed to recieve and F. Never missed any days perfect attendance and i went to her office hours to understand why my grade was so poor. She failed all my well written papers and would tell me to redo them and even when i would she wouldn' accept it. I tried so hard for no reason.
WORST PROFESSOR YOU CAN EVER HAVE. Shes an old hag, grouchy and rude for no reason... never knew someone can be so unhappy and take it out on students. TOTAL cringe. DO NOT TAKE YOU WILL FAIL IF NOT FAIL YOULL RECEIVE A D AT MOST!!
I took this class online in the summer and the only feedback I received was her anger at how bad my writing was. there was no constructive criticism and we had to use the words and language she wanted. She also left the country and had no way of grading papers so at the last minute I had many papers to correct and finish. I used the tutoring hub.
I took her class during the summer the work is a big load but nothing you can't handle. She isn't very helpful when asking for feedback and when emailing her she was very sarcastic. She gives quite a few papers and written assignments to get done so be prepared to write a bit and assigns many readings. Shes a very harsh grader.
She gives out so many assignments throughout the week it's outrages! Seems like I was doing work just for her class everyday of the week. For example, was suppose to do a total of 4 papers however, the class was so backed up she had to cut it to 3. Extremely hard grader. She can also be rude at times when asking for help.
Ive had Dr. Chewning twice and shes great! If you dont enjoy writing, she may not be for you. There's a weekly essay, group essay, and discussion. Throughout the semester, we had to write 4 papers which she allowed us to edit and hand in multiple times for the best grade. There were a few extra credit opportunities, too. Youll have to work hard
In short: a LOT of reading, A LOT of group work (99% of this class is groupwork) so make sure you have access to your group members outside of class for homework and outside of class assignments, theres 4 papers in the semester and shes a TOUGH grader, and theres a few video assignments youll have to do that involves you recording your answer
First she is an extremely tough grader, to the point there is almost no way to earn a 100 in any assignment. She isn't always clear in her instructions and gives you vague topics for papers, as well as grades them harshly and your viewpoint on a lot of subjects can affect your grade on your writing if it differs from hers.
This is the worst teacher I've ever taken with. She will NOT teach you writing skills, she will talk about her political views and try to force her opinion on you. If you write the opposite she will deduct points. she's never ready for class, always late grading papers, all the semester she will only talk about herself, very offensive.
Never in my years of school have I received such low grades on papers or just 100-word paragraphs. She grades so tough on simple assignments and then won't give you proper feedback on things she took points off for. Her lectures are mostly political talk and about Facebook groups she's in. She has no empathy and like the other reviews say she loves talking about her political views and when she gives specific topics on things & you write your honest opinions she gives a low grade because it does not align with her views! What is up with that!? Spent all semester writing about garbage thats not beneficial to me!
shes so mean lowkey and gives so much busy work. the work she assigns is pointless and a waste of time, im learning nothing. all she talks about is race or gender, idk what that has to do with brit lit but shes annoying
Don't do it bruh, even if it's a class you need, take an online course or just wait next sem for a different teacher. Tell me why I'm doing more work for her than my two sciences (A&P AND ORGO) combined???! Along with 3-4 small essays she has mandatory group assignments every week!! She's also super ode on phones (if ur on it she'll mark u absent)
Worst teacher honestly, she let's you hand stuff in late but her grading is unclear and very hard. The dynamic of the class is boring and she doesn't seem to care for the students at all. Been an Honors A student in English all my life, up until her.
This prof and her class have made this my worst semester by far. Her lectures are decent but the homework is the nail in the coffin for me. Wayyyy too many assignments that serve no purpose other than to be busywork and are often repetitive. The grading criteria are not clear. This class alone takes more time than my 3 others combined. Steer clear.
She's VERY stingy with grading. I'm already in week 2 of her online class and I've not gotten a single grade that is above 88. A lot of the assignments are going to be about politics and she does not really teach you how to write essays. Don't take her if you don't want to keep reading & writing about politics and to only get an 85 at most.
Doesn't even know her subject, still tries to be a "know-it-all". Will always make you work on topics that suits her views, if you present your own views say goodbye to your grades. No wonder she teaches at a community college and no one even respects her there. STAY AWAY...!! THE COLLEGE BETTER LAY HER OFF..!!
Unreasonable with grading. I worked really hard and went above and beyond what was expected of me for three papers she assigned in the first week. She gave me poor grades that I didn't deserve. Not to mention she forces her views on you and if you disagree she literally takes points off. She's really close minded and assigns way too much homework.
You will need to do several things to pass this class with an A. Understand her grading rubric STARTS AT 80%. This is the grade she gives if you MEET THE REQUIREMENTS for the assignment posted. To score above this grade, you must go well above the prescribed assignment. Ensure you read and fully understand assigned articles, they are critical.
This is a very difficult and stressful class. Professor expects perfection, I'm not kidding. Compared to others, she's very strict, and will rarely give out 100's or 90's. Your best bet is a 80, and your average grade will most likely be a 70 or 75. I highly do NOT recommend this professor. Save your money and stress.
I wouldn't retake her class because she barely covers anything related to English, and she forces her viewpoints on you and gives an absurd amount of assignments. She was extremely unfair in grading as well and wouldn't give feedback on how to improve. I work very hard to be an A student, but she made it almost impossible & she's very rude.
Professor Chewning has very specific grading standards, so be prepared to go above and beyond to earn high marks. Utilize unstuck study and other study tools to excel in this challenging yet rewarding class.
First off I want to start by saying that the workload is outrageous. She is a very tough grader, don't expect to get higher than an 80 on most assignments even if you've tried your hardest. Doesn't give clear feedback... Extremely rude... Most of the class time is spent with her talking about politics or race. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS !!!
Dr. Chewning gave a huge amount of work alongside 3 papers that have to be written throughout the course. If you do take this class get ready to receive no more than a B on all of your assignments and minimal feedback on your work. Attendance is mandatory, she spends the entire class time chatting which could instead be spent getting work done.
I arrived at UCC without taking SAT and intended to get an undergrad through the transfer process to the State University in the same county -- Kean. Dr. Chewning was a professor at Kean & made it feel like I can do anything if I tried. I took Brit Literature 2 in Spring 24 (highest level English class) instead of another language. Stay Sharp!
Professor Chewning was incredibly communicative, helpful, and genuinely cared about her students. She always made time to answer questions and guided me in the right direction whenever I felt unsure. Her support made a big difference in my learning experience, and I really appreciated how approachable and encouraging she was throughout the course.
Every single assignment is about race or politics. You will not receive a good grade if you don't agree with her views on either. Please save yourself the headache I am having right now and do not take any of her classes.
I don't think Professor Chewning was a bad professor. I learned a lot from how tough she was, but I HAD to drop this class bc there was no way I was going to pass it. I always considered myself a great writer and all of my Eng classes always ended up with an A+ but I could not get higher than a 70 in any paper in her class. Don't do it, too tough.
This class was a bit strange for an English-101 course. As others have pointed out, the main material came across as more appropriate for a Journalism class or Political Science class. Many of the assigned readings came across as very strange, especially the ones critiquing secularism. I also disliked how group assignment heavy the class was.
