I absolutely loved being in Dr. Cote's class. She's clear in her lectures and shares her enthusiasm with the class. She's also extremely friendly and helpful if you talk to her outside of class. She will make an effort to remember you. But warning: be prepared for wrist cramps from all the notes you will be taking!
A very good prof. She is always approachable, and if you have any questions she's also enthusiastic. Her exams are more than fair, everything is straight off her notes, so make sure you have a good mind of memorization to memorize some key facts. I highly recommend her.
I did enjoy this class and thought Dr. Cote's tests were fair. I found that she rushes through ideas making it hard to take notes. When this was mentioned to her she did not slow down but instead told us to take notes with our laptops.. Memorization is key for her tests. You should be able to practically recite her slides from memory to get an A.
Awesome! Study the slides and go to class and you'll do great. The classes are interesting to go to as well.
Intersting and informative class. Dr.Cote is very clear on what is going to be tested. Textbook stuff is not generally tested, but it does have supplemental information in it. Great class. Would Recommend.
this class is way to condensed. Its a real easy class I am sure for the fall and winter semester, but for summer its ridiculous. There is so much info you have to memorize and very little time to do so. The info should be set up in a way where it gives you the basics and does not test you on he nitty gritty, especially when tests are days apart.
An extremely content heavy course and requires a lot of memorization. A lot of time is spent on this class, especially it being super rushed in the summer. Dr. Cote's lectures are organized and she was pretty clear in explaining the topics.
Dr. Cote is one of the better profs I've had. Straight forward, organized and easy to understand. Serious about material but has a good sense of humour. Very willing to help understand tougher concepts. Personally didn't need textbook but attendance a must. Ability to memorize facts presented in class verbatim will guarantee a high grade.
Dr. Cote is an amazing prof, however, do not take this class for an easy A. It is a lot of biology and science, which means a lot of memorization and studying. Her lectures are key, and she is wonderful at explaining course topics. You also won't need to buy the textbook!
She's absolutely brilliant!
I took this class a year or 2 ago. It was probably one of my favourites during university and I learned a LOT. She expects you to know a lot of detail, but I think that's how it should be. Study enough and you'll do great in her classes. She really is a wonderful prof with a great sense of humour.
Lectures informative and concise. A lot of memorization for this class but she makes the course material interesting.
Clear, informative, interesting, entertaining. Lectures were a good time, and also super informative. Exams were very fair and reasonable, and she was very clear with her expectations. Exams are not a breeze, and marking is tough, however she gives you everything you need to succeed, and goes out of her way to help you learn.
She's very stuck up and didn't give her TA a chance to teach or do anything. Don't get the textbook.
Dr. Cote provides amazing lectures and online notes for studying and review and has incredible experience in the material she teaches. She can be a little bit sassy with student every now and again, and has no tolerance for excessive chatting and disruption of her course. Excellent prof. though, and if you pay attention, passing her course is easy
Tests are hard but just need some studying. You only need to skim the textbook and you should be fine for the tests. Remember to memorize the locations of certain phyla for the humanprimate section but she will generally make it clear about her expectations.
Professor Cote is not my favourite anthro prof, however she is very intelligent and answers questions very well. She is a tad arrogant and won't tolerate disruption. Her tests are all MC, and her notes are very clear. The textbook was a help and is testable.
Cote was amazing, I had a joint class with her and Brian Keating and I was so sad to see her go. You might think she's arrogant, but I think she just really knows her stuff. She will help you if you need it, don't be afraid to ask! She's a great lecturer and clearly loves her field.
Susanne Cote is an amazing professor who clearly loves her field of study. She really knows her stuff. If anything, the class is a little difficult, but she wants you to do well!
One of my favorite professors in the Anthropology department! She's hilarious, very personable, puts effort into getting to know you and not see you as just a number so if you have a chance talk to her about the class and any other interests you might have in the field. She will help you find your answers )
She si very nice to students and very clear on her lecture materials. exams are straight forward.
Her lectures are long but amazing. There is a lot of reading as well but if you complete the reading before lectures than you are fine. She makes the occasional funny quip as well. If you take her class and are prepared to put in effort than you will succeed and really learn something from the experience.
Fantastic class. Very hard work, but toally worth it for the amount of learning and expereince you get from is. Dr. Cote is a fantastic prof and really knows what she is doing, but be prepared to work for your marks!
Its a great class and she is an awesome prof in general and the subject matter is presented in awesome way but watch out... exams are very specific and even the lab final was marked hard. Make sure to take great notes in lecture and study!
Dr. Cote is amazing, she's passionate about her subject and she's eager to share that passion. She's very approachable and super helpful if you have any questions or need clarification. Exams were tough, but if you attend lecture do the readings, and study as you go you'll do fine!
Dr Cote is one of the most amazing professors I have had! She makes you work hard for a good grade but that is what helps you to learn! She notices your strengths and is more than happy to help you succeed. She may seem intimidating at first but is a great prof to get to know! I highly recommend her classes to anyone!
Professor Cote is the biggest wanker. You might as well give the 500 bucks to charity cause you repeating the course if you get her.
She should be the role model for professors. Lectures are clear and detailed and she invest extra office hours before exams to help you to the fullest. She is not an easy grader but not an impossible one either. I like that she really challenges to put your best effort into it. If you like the material, you will have a positive experience.
Amazing and inspirational lecturer. Tests are difficult but fair.
Amazing professor. She really is passionate about the subject and presents everything in a way you can understand. She posts the slides online, but you should definitely go to class because otherwise you miss the context of the slides. Inspired me to pick my field of study.
Dr. Cote is hilarious and one of my favourite professors. She is really enthusiastic about her material and isn't afraid to give her opinions on controversial lecture topics. The labs are fun and if you participate the lab exam is easy. Her lecture exams are difficult, so make sure you memorize as much as possible. One of my favourite classes.
Dr. Cote is my favorite prof, she makes lectures interesting with her jokes and her opinions. She makes what's on the test very clear, and is helpful if you have questions. The lab exam is easy, but be sure you understand the material while you do each lab (don't just follow others). Lecture exams are tough but fair, so be sure to memorize it all!
Dr. Cote is one of the best profs I've ever had. She is very passionate about the material and very engaging in class. She makes your work for you grade but she really does care about her students and wants them to succeed. Not to mention she's hilarious!
I loved this class, Dr. Cote is hilarious, brilliant, kind, and has realistic expectations. This is one of the few classes I feel like I will remember information from for years to come. It was interesting and very well organized. Grading was fair but you had to go to class and know your stuff.
She is very knowledgeable but she is not meant to teach at least for first year . Her tests and quizzes are very tricky and every single detail matters. I know this is a memorization course but she makes it hard for no reason. I honestly dont understand how she is recommended because you have to take the class again if you choose her.
Great Prof. I'll admit, the tests are quite tricky, especially the first part of the course, but she's a gives great lectures. She's very approachable and kind. If you're at all interested in apes/monkeys/evolution and want a good option, this is a good one to take. It's an Arts course, though. Can't go wrong taking it with Dr Cote.
She comes to class prepared and have a lot to say. She knows a lot about the course and she tries her best to help everyone succeed. She doesn't curve marks, though. The only thing I dislike are her exams (i.e. options are A and B are right, B and C are right, all of them ... none). Every single bit of detail you need to know.
The amount of patience cote has is rather amazing. Being a Harvard graduate, with a PHD, a solid prof.
Excellent prof with good lectures and knows so much about her topic, but tests and quizzes are actually quite difficult considering its an entry level course. Really have to read the textbook to do well.
Dr. Cote is a great lecturer she kept me interested through the long 75 minute lectures. If you miss lecture you wont do well, she has videos in class that are on the midterms and final. She also knows a lot about her field of study which makes her able to answer the difficult questions classmates had. 100% worth the time spent in her lectures.
She really passionate about anthropology and that's reflected in her notes which are amazing. But to this day I have nightmares about choosing to buy the textbook or a used car. You're better off with an older textbook that's a fraction of the original cost. Got my 6th edition for 5 bucks but I was always worried I was missing info...
Ill start by saying that this class is difficult for an intro course. Dr Cote covers a vast amount of material (mostly from the textbook and summarized in her lecture slides). I would recommend not skipping any of her classes as she puts in the effort and communicates the material with enthusiasm and makes it easier to digest. Firm but nice lady.
Cote made this course really interesting! Her lectures are great and very organized. If you study her slides and read the textbook, the tests are really easy. She gives out study guides which tell you the contents to focus on. If you want an A, just prepare to read & memorize a lot of things. The good thing is that the test are non-cumulative!
Dr. Cote was a real gem. It was nice being in this course even though I wasn't very interested in hominins or evolution. This course isn't an free A though, it was a lot of memorization for an intro/200 level. Still, an easy A if you are willing to study all the material 2-3 days before the exams. Would recommend relying on older text versions.
As someone said, she is a real gem; fair on tests and marking, clear on grading criteria, and approachable in and outside of class. Her lectures were inspirational and easy to follow. That being said, there is a lot of memorization in this course and getting A isn't easy. If you put in the effort and time to memorize though, it is not impossible!
Very passionate about anthropology! Definitely attend lectures she is very good at explaining and breaking down tough topics. I would recommend you use the companion website for the textbook to prepare for exams (very helpful). Overall really enjoyed the course.
The way the course was split and graded was very beneficial to the students. The first part was basically an easy version of bio 30, easy but boring. the best part of her class was the final was not cumulative and in my opinion it was on hominins which was the most interesting topic, and you just needed to know all the key dates to get an A
Dr. Cote is the single most important professor I encountered during my undergraduate. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. If you have any interest in continuing in the field of anthropology, be sure to make an appointment with her. Ask lots of questions, utilize the resources available to you, and study! You will be successful.
Dr. Cote is amazing! Take any chance you get to take a class with her, even if you are not an Anthro major. She is one of the best examples of a top notch professor that you can find at U of C. Not an easy A, she will challenge you to put the work in, but it is worth it if you take pride in your academic pursuits. Excellent value for your tuition.
One of the best professors in the anth department, makes an hour and fifteen minute class feel like a fifty minute class. Labs are fun and re-assert material from lectures.
Dr. Cote is a real gem. she's hilarious and you can tell she enjoys lecturing even if it isn't her research. Her lectures are clear but still expand on things that make you think. You need to memorize a bit but the labs make it infinitely easier to recall concepts. Lab exam was easy and requires minimal effort if you pay attention in lab and class.
Amazing professor!
She's so smart, so articulate, answers even the "dumbest" questions kindly. Tests are fair, I wish every prof could be as good as her. I wish she taught more classes!
Great prof! Awesome lectures and very willing to answer all questions. She was very helpful and reasonable in the lab assignments and with assigning readings. The tests were well done and so long as you have a basic understanding of the material and paid attention in class you will do great in her class. One of the best profs i've had so far!!
One of the best profs at UofC. So knowledgeable, kind and genuinely caring. Her lectures are so interesting, labs are so fun and tests are challenging but super fair if you put in the effort. She gives tons of advice to do well on them and will answer any questions in a respectful manner. Take this class!! Its so fun!
Honestly one of my favourite profs! She is super caring and always able to help us out. The exams are long but so long as you have a basic understanding of the concepts you can do really well. Even the research paper was way easier because of the multistep review and editing approach that definitely set us all up for success!
Highly recommend. Genuinely cares about her students. Despite having a lot of assessments and a high amount of material, she is so clear about what she expects that it is less stressful to take this class than it is to play animal crossing. She is also very happy to help students interest in continuing in the field and give advice.
Dr. Cote is one of the best professors at the university. I've taken several courses with her and she is constantly kind, helpful and clear on expectations. Her classes challenge you in a good way and she is always ready to help out. This was my first 400 level class so I was a bit nervous, however, her teaching style made it very enjoyable.
Dr. Cote is the best prof I've had at UofC! She's so passionate about what she teaches and genuinely wants everyone to succeed! The lectures are fast but they're well organized. Expectations for assignments/tests are always clear. Essays on midterms but they're okay if you study! Highly recommend, take a class with her if you get the chance!!
If you need a 400 level ANTH class def take it with cote. She always evaluates exactly the way she says she will and is accessible and happy to help you. She also responds to emails freakishly fast. I always finish classes with her feeling like I learned a lot and was pushed to do my best in a really fair manner.
This class is unreasonably difficult and Dr. Cote prides herself on students getting in the 60s?! That is not a flex. I never want to take an anth class with her again.
AVOID. HER. I hated everything about this class. Her teaching style is boring and honestly this class is so unnecessarily difficult. I was genuinely interested in anthropology, but her teaching style and tests have put me off it so much.
The material of this class is very interesting, although admittedly sometimes lectures do become a bit dry. To be successful, you simply need to memorize some key points from lectures, labs, and readings, which is not crazy difficult with the cue card provided for the midterm/final. If you spend any significant time studying you will do well.
One of the worst professors at UofC. She is mentally inflexible, has no empathy for students, and has extremely unfair grading practices. The lectures are interesting, but the labs are super tough and unnecessarily difficult. I was very interested in human evolution going into this course, but she has turned me completely off the entire topic.
I hated the class content, but Dr. Cote was a good lecturer who made the class manageable. She is professional, concerned about your learning, and gladly provides support for her students when needed.
overall a good prof
I love dr cote
Dr. Cote is one of the best profs I have ever had. Her notes are amazing and her lectures are so enjoyable. The quizzes are easy and really help boosting your grade; the exams are the BEST you can ever have in your entire life in terms of questions flow and the number of questions. She is really caring and inspirational.
The class requires a lot of memorization, but as long as you study a week before every exam, you'll do well. Her lectures are very well done, since she explains the material in a very easy manner. Exams have material covered in lectures, so even if you don't read the textbook you will be fine.
Dr. Cote is very knowledgable and passionate about the content material, which makes her lectures interesting and engaging. She gives weekly online open-book quizzes, which aren't too hard to do well on. Slides are helpful, and she makes review slides as guidelines for the two midterms and the final, which consist of fair multiple choice questions.
One of the most respected Professors in my opinion that I would most definitely recommend to undergrad students. She is very passionate at her Job and is not afraid to help and answer questions. Her weekly quizzes will help you stay up to date in where the class is and her notes are equally as useful as the textbook itself. Would totally recommend!
Loved her! Super interactive and cares a lot about her students success. We did use the textbook, but I didn't and ended up with a A+. The tests are average. Keep up with the powerpoints and study slides and you will be set!
She was very thoughtful and caring towards her students. Her lectures were well organized and engaging. Weekly open book quizzes, with questions that repeated on midterms and exam ;)
Dr. Cote is the most inspirational prof I‘ve had in undergrad so far. I looked forward to her lectures every week because she is a very engaging and insightful speaker. Like lots of people have mentioned, the quizzes and tests were well thought out and very fair. Get the textbook! Even reading an old edition made studying for easier and faster.
She was very prepared for lectures and was really great at explaining things. Only downside were the weekly quizzes, that were quite easy, but you had to read the textbook section for the next week before you could do them. Its an easy class, as long as you are willing to read the textbook. The midterms and final were heavily based on the quizzes.
Dr. Cote is such a good professor! She explains concepts very well and ensures that everyone's questions are answered by going above and beyond to clarify everything. She clearly outlines what's on assessments and also takes the time to clear misconceptions that students have on quizzes etc. She is very approachable and makes class interesting.
Dr Cote was an amazing professor. She was clear on what would be on the midterms, her expectations, and created reviews/ recommended how we should study. It was easy to reach her through email and office hours. She would extend her office hours and have more right before the exams to ensure there was time to reach her. Overall, no complaints!
Dont read the text if youre doing anth201 u dont need it unless u rlly want more context (only read the advance chapters that she didn't lecture yet)
Best prof I've had, she clearly cares about the material and her lectures are super engaging and interesting
Dr. Cote is great! She is really passionate about her work and her classes are really engaging. You need to go to class, it is impossible to get a good grade if you are not there taking notes. Would definitely recommend her class if you have an interest on it and are willing to put in the work.
Dr. Cote is an amazing professor and probably one of the best I've had at UCalgary. She gives really interesting lectures. The course load might be intimidating, but she makes it straight to the point and digestible. She's more than happy to take questions and talk about the material after class all the time. Amazing teacher!
Overall one of the best profs i've had so far. She is very caring towards her students, always answering questions positively and her lectures are very helpful for when tests come around. She is very transparent with what will appear on her assessments, overall a great experience and would definitely recommend this prof.
Great and extremely knowledgeable prof. Interesting class with relatively in-depth midterm and final (good grade is very attainable if you show up to class and actually study). Criticism is that labs seem to be graded a tad unfairly. As a non-Anth major, I felt like she wanted us to know things that we simply couldn't have.
shes so real, she made a midterm prep slides and her lectures are easy to follow along with for the most part
Dr Cote is absolutely passionate about what she teaches, and you can tell. She's great at answering questions and her lectures are very engaging and interesting.. I however personally had some issues with her midterms as I found them to be a little confusing for some questions, but otherwise fair
Cote is a good prof and really does care about her students. Her slides are detailed and pretty much from the textbook. My favourite thing is the fact that she gives exam prep slides which really outline what we need to do for the exams. The lecture quizzes are also mark boosters if you follow along the class lectures well.
AVOID this section if possible and take the evening lecture with a different professor. Although she says questions are encouraged, the responses always feel dismissive and condescending. Despite being an option course, I did worse in this than CHEM351.
hated this class more than anything during my 3 years at uofc so far
Dr. Cote is awesome, she's very passionate and is a great lecturer! As long as you go to class and study you'll do great!
Amazing prof, don't take intro anth if it isn't with her. Super passionate during lectures, which works wonders for engaging the entire auditorium. Almost embarked on a journey to Ethiopia in hopes of discovering a new LCA.
