This class is not a typical class. There are only papers and midterm/final are written in-class essays. His teaching style is really abstract, which can be good or bad.
He has an extremely interesting teaching method, which I thoroughly enjoy. He uses a lot of analogy and stories to explain concepts in class. He cares that what he is teaching does not just affect you intellectually, but emotionally too. It's a class that makes you go home and think about everything you've ever done in your life. I recommend it!
Dr. Sutha is by far the most interesting professor I've had. If you are not willing to keep an open mind DO NOT take this class. His tests are all essay and you need to actually understand the material not memorize. I highly recommend him you will think about things in a new light and help you decide if counseling is right for you.
By far the best professor I have had at UW-L. His teaching style is totally different than any other professor I have had and by that I mean he using examples to help us learn. No powerpoint/no memorization. You have to APPLY your knowledge to do well in this class. Tests = all essay. Take this class if you like this sort of teaching.
He is a great teacher. He only gives a midterm and a final test. They are difficult only because they are abstract and all essay. However, he is still one of my favorite teachers. He wants students to understand what he is teaching.
Everyone should take this class! It teaches you things that will be helpful in your life, not just in your future career. Dr. Sutha is very passionate about what he teaches and wants students to understand the material and feel for the topics. You should go to class or you won't understand the material. Loved this class!
Class in interesting but he is the pickiest grader I've ever had. You have to use the exact terms on his essay test. I studied my ass off and got a 3450 on the midterm
By far the best professor at UW-L. PSY 285 will change your life for the better.
Dr. Sutha is a man you need to meet in your lifetime.
Amazingly inspirational class and teacher. Can take pages of notes from each lecture with no power points - and that's saying something! Highly recommend him!
Dr. Sutha is an extremely smart professor; however, he uses his intelligence to demean and belittle you. Tests are difficult and are entirely essay format. He uses interesting analogies to teach concepts, which is different. The entire class is revolved entirely around making white students feel bad about their culture, wouldn't take him again.
Dr. Sutha is intimidating and likes to make you think about what you need to know for his class. I would not recommend taking him unless you are ready to work for your grade. You have to understand the material and not just memorize. No multiple choice tests, all essay. Be ready to feel uncomfortable and have an open mind.
Very interesting mindset, always interested to hear his perspectives. Take your own notes, from scratch. You will not pass if you do not go to class. Tests can be very hard. If you cannot apply the material, you will fail. Dr. Sutha can be very intimidating, however, this class presents very interesting and relevant concepts of white culture.
This class should only be taken if you are a Psych Major going to grad school for psych; be ready to be called out and asked why you're taking the class if you are are not. His tests are hard, but manageable. He gives no expectations and very few, vague instructions on the assignments such as the reflection papers and then tears them apart.
For the final paper and for the reflection papers throughout the course I tried to meet with him to get help so I could do well. You can't make appointments and he's always busy with him so it is nearly impossible to meet with him and get the help that he offers to give. I tried to meet with him multiple times and waited forever. Not helpful at all
Dr. Sutha is so amazing. He challenges the way you see the world and truly gets you to think outside of your comfort zone. An absolutely phenomenal class about perception and systems of power. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to grow not only intellectually but also as a person!!
Dr. Sutha was an absolutely amazing professor and he didn't teach to a test. He taught for the well being and betterment of our society, so if you are looking to better yourself as a person, TAKE THIS CLASS. Be ready to have you ideas challenged, but keep an open mind. It is a tough class but every ounce of me is so thankful I took this class!
Dr. Sutha is an amazing professor. I learned more about psychology and how to apply it to those around me and myself, from him than I have from all my other professors combined. He keeps class funny and interesting and his lectures will keep you thinking for days. Whether you like him or not, he will give you a new way of thinking about things.
I thought this class was really interesting but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it was taught by a more helpful professor.
I have taken both PSY404 & PSY285 with him and he is a great lecturer but his classes are really hard. Make sure you attend class and know how to take notes. Never wait to study for his tests because they're extremely challenging. He's great but don't take the class expecting a GPA boost and don't take them if you're not a psych major.
Dr. Sutha is honestly is one of the toughest graders I have ever had and you will need to put time into study for his class. That being said, I have learned more from him than probably any other professor. If you have an opened mind he can be one of the most inspirational lecturers you may ever meet . He makes everything so easy to relate to.
Awful. He is the most unhelpful person I have ever met.
He did not put one single grade onto D2L until the night before final grades were due. I had no idea how I was doing in the class. Through the semester you have to write 5 2 page reflection papers and take a mid-term. Within the last 3 weeks of school you present a 35 minute group presentation, write a 5-page reflection paper, AND take an exam.
I have also taken PSY285 and PSY404 with Dr. Sutha and every class just got better and better. He is one of the hardest graders and makes you think very critically but his classes and what you learn from him is life changing. He is one of the intelligent people I know. Take his classes!
If you've had Dr. Sutha before, you know that he's not afraid to speak his mind and that's what makes him phenomenal. Lectures are joyous, this course (similar to 285 but harder )is challenging but vastly interesting. If you've taken PSY 285 with Dr. Sutha and crave more knowledge then I highly recommend taking this class. I live for his analogies!
Dr. Sutha teaches great material but in the worst way possible. You never know what to expect in the class because he doesn't post grades, give clear criteria, or answer students' questions. For a class called "Culture and Mental Health," there was 0 mention of mental health, and it should be categorized as a Racial Studies class instead.
Very smart but uses intelligence to belittle students and call them out in class. Would not advise taking.
Dr. Sutha is a wonderful professor. I had his for Psychology of Religion and I loved his lectures. They were always engaging and easy to participate in. He taught me a lot and I hope to have him again. He really cares about his students and ensuring that they understand the material through lecture and many papers.
Sutha is a great professor. He cares much more about his students understanding and applying the material then about taking a test. His lectures utilize analogies, which makes the material much more powerful. The material definitely will challenge your thinking, but expands you as a person. Group project at the end seems daunting, but is not bad.
Respected, but was an impossible grader. Has no actual powerpoint, all notes must be taken on your own account from his lectures. Exams require HOURS of studying, grading outline is either incredibly vague or non-existent. If you skip his class, you WILL fail (not because he takes attendance, just because his lectures are so heavy). Good luck.
College got you confused? Not sure why you're a psychology major? Haven't learned anything that has actually benefited you, or help you to grow? Well look no further! Dr. Sutha will challenge you unlike the other bland courses you've had thus far. Enjoy the lectures, keep an open mind and be willing to learn; it's up to you how this class goes.
If you want to learn something sure take him, but if you want a good gpa you shouldn't. Wrote my reflection papers like I was suppose to. Its to reflect and express how I feel and he didn't like that. Received all A's this semester besides this class which is a gen ed and got a B/C. Not worth the struggle.
Should only be allowed to teach something involving religion and culture. 3/4 of the content I learned was about how my religion is bad, his is right, and was bashed daily. Was expecting to learn about counseling/personality theories but instead learned about hinduism and about how the rest of the population is nothing compared to him.
This class was challenging but it's essential to take if you wanna learn critical application of psychological concepts that involve people of color. Sutha uses analogies and visual learning to have his students deeply process and feel the content. Just like any other classes, you need to study and take good notes if you wanna earn a decent grade.
I've never respected a professor more than Sutha. He really challenges your thinking and changes you. The class is difficult, but you will get SO much out of it. Thankful for the experience of taking several classes with him. Honestly when I leave his class some days I just feel like staring at a wall and thinking about who tf I am.
This class is incredibly eye-opening and challenged views that have been taught to me since I was in grade school; if you go into it with an open mindset, you will be changed after the course. HOWEVER, the way Dr. Sutha runs the class makes it unnecessarily difficult. If youre taking this class for a gen ed, theres many easier options.
This has been by far my favorite class as I felt I have truly learned something rather than just passed a class. This class is by no means easy. Sutha demands respect & will not accept it any other way. Exams are difficult but if you listen and take good notes it will really help. Come into this class with an open mind as the content is challenging
By far the best professor I have EVER had. He taught me more about the world and myself then nearly any other facet of my life-you should not leave UWL without taking him. I cant recommend it enough! Classes will be hard, and Im so glad I took them. Phenomenal understanding of race; he struggles with queer/transphobia, sexism, and ableism at times
Ignore all of the bad reviews! I intentionally took ever class Dr. Sutha offered because Ive never learned so much from any other professor. Are his classes challenging? Absolutely. Are the worth it? More than you know. Not only do you learn about things that matter in the world, but you learn about yourself. Write down everything! :) Love him
Dr. Sutha knows his stuff but the content is thick, uncomfortable, and a lot. He's a good professor but this class is not easy. It's not like other course where you memorize concepts and are tested, you have to talk with group members about heavy concepts and try to understand the world around you. It's hard to explain. Good content, but difficult.
I enjoyed Dr. Suthas lectures, but he was an unbelievably tough grader. His grading criteria seemed clear but then he would mark a ton off points off and not say why. I liked the material of the class but he puts a bad experience on it with tough and unclear grading.
Dr. Sutha is still the most amazing professor Ive ever had! His class changed my life for the better. I dont know where Id be now without it (Im writing this 3 years later I think its that important) take every chance you can to work with him! Go to office hours! Such a cool person to get to know.
Worst professor I have ever had. Does not care about your success in the class and thinks that all of his students are stupid. Information is interesting but not worth it. Seems to pride himself off of students failing and dropping his class. There are few points in the class so if you do poorly on one you are screwed.
He has 1 hour long tests with vague questions for which he expects specific answers. Every lecture he talked about race, and he has some pretty far left ideas about things. He gives the impression that if you believe anything right of his opinion, you're a bad person. Avoid him if at all possible.
Dr. Sutha grades tough, but if you really want to learn something about yourself and others then take his classes. His lectures are uncomfortable, because they force you to look within. I've never learned as much from another professor as I have with him in PSY 235 and PSY 404. If you are open to changing your ways of thinking take his classes.
Studying for hours will not help you in the least (trust me, I tried). A professor whose class only covers racism, not the topics in the name of the class or textbook, Dr. Sutha explains very little, gives you very little chance to practice concepts, and grades harshly. Feel confident in your answers? Too bad, they're wrong, and you fail the class.
Here is a direct quote from a message he sent. I'd appreciate it if you can keep your anxiety in check as we get to the end of the semester. Please try not to come up with creative excuses to somehow hold me responsible for your poor performance in this course so far. If that doesnt tell you what kind of a professor he is, idk what to tell you.
Made me cry. Very rude and unhelpful. Does not want you to succeed. Wants to see you fail. Do not recommend.
He will change your life. Do not leave UW-L without taking him. Prepare to be uncomfortable and make sure to go in with empathy and an open mind. The only professor that I have had here who I feel truly teaches something worthwhile and applicable to all of life. Leave your ego at the door. Prepare to be humbled.
The content is great but I would not recommend the class unless you are up for a challenge. If you want yo pass the class go to his office hours and attend every single lecture miss one and good luck! He does not make himself very available and does not care about you passing the class. If you ask for help he assumes you are blaming him. He is rude
Amazing class, left every lecture feeling more intelligent and as though my eyes had been opened. Very valuable information life changing even. However, expectations arent always clear and very hard/specific grader. Tests are short answer/ essay format and you need the EXACT vocab words hes looking for when most terms from class would suffice.
Absolutely do not take him. Spends the entire hour and a half of class complaining that he's not white and making you feel bad for being white (I'm not white but he addresses the whole class as it). Thinks he's funny but gotta admit content is interesting. he's just annoying
I've grown to respect Professor Sutha even though I disagree with him on many of his opinions. He doesn't pull his punches, which is a very respectable trait when comparing to other professors at UWL. He's got some logical inconsistencies about the ideas he presents, but otherwise he's a well-rounded teacher. If you take this class, good luck.
Worst UWL professor I had by far. 3 essay exams(only accepts HIS answers, and no help for what will be on it), 3 group videos(doesn't like what most students say), and 35 min presentation(NO NOTECARDS). He thinks that he is a great teacher and students are in the wrong. Did I mention the exams are cumulative and he doesn't explain the grades?
This professor is one of the few who actually cares about teaching you something. This professor's approach to teaching is not like others, if you are looking for a "going to class, reading the Powerpoint, and regurgitating information" this class might not be for you. If you are looking for a class that will help you grow as a person, this is it.
Awful, do not under any circumstances take this professor. He is extremely unhelpful and seems to want students to fail his classes. Not available outside of class. Avoid him at all costs.
I am about to drop the class. This professor has the opportunity to teach amazing content - but lets their personal issues cloud the course. Fails to make connections between concepts, doesn't care about student success. Is unwilling to be questioned. Wasted weeks complaining about personal issues, yet it was our fault we weren't ready for exam.
Worst professor Ive ever had. Makes the whole class uncomfortable and fails over half the class on test.
This professor has done so much for me in the small time I have had him. He has allowed me to look at the world from a completely different perspective. Although his lectures are amazing and very insightful, they are a must and if you do not attend class, you will not pass! Highly recommend Dr. Sutha!!!!
I took Sutha for PSY285 and PSY 404. I absolutely love his classes and think they have taught me the most out of any of my classes here at UWL. That being said, these classes are not easy. He is very particular about wording and there is no such thing as multiple choice. You have to genuinely study and know the material to succeed in his classes
Bias in his teaching. Makes horrible statements about the chancellor, and other people on campus. He seems to think he know more than anyone. Narcissistic in how he interacts with students and even other teachers. Degrades white women and men in class throughout semester. A very angry person with many of his own issues projected onto to others.
I respect his ambition but for a gen ed class, he was tougher than I anticipated. The thing that screwed me over was that his second exam fell after the drop date and hurt my chances of succeeding in class. It is difficult content in general to interpret and his exams are very specific in how he interprets the entries. Wish there was more to grade.
Only graded on 3 exams, a paper, and a presentation. He never responds to emails and isn't very accommodating. He is rude and has a very big ego. His directions on things are never clear and always have some sort of confusion. I would NOT recommend it.
Dr. Sutha is the worst professor I've had so far at uwl. He makes you feel like it's your fault if you're confused on a topic and provides no help if you are struggling. His grading is biased and he teaches like he has something to prove instead of wanting to work with you to help you learn. I am a 4.0 student and had to drop this class.
love this guy. if you can't handle him then good luck in the real world!
I took PSY 285 with Dr. Sutha and I am currently in PSY 491. Favorite professor ever! If you are not ready to learn info that conflicts with your pre-existing ideas(causing you to feel uncomfortable),then this professor is not for you. This is my first class I truly learned about applicable content that I still reference in the outside world.
Best professor I have ever had, and I fully believe I would not be the person I am today without having him as a professor. I've taken all of his courses and am sad I don't have any left for next semester. Don't let other's inability to endure change hinder you from experiencing one of his classes.
I have had Dr. Sutha as a professor three times now during my time at UW-L and if that doesn't encourage you to take his courses, I don't know what will. Go into his classes with an open mind, and be prepared to reconsider your understanding of how the world works.
I have too much to say to fit here, but if you need to take this class for the art therapy minor, I recommend talking to your advisor as the school is working on offering more classes that fit that requirement.
He uses analogies and several sources from different psychologists. I enjoyed his class, because he also used humor to address issues. Most reasons people view him as difficult is because he doesn't like to sugarcoat.
This class was good but I struggled understanding some of the information for the 1st test. He gives interesting lectures. One thing that I would say he could improve on is grading a bit quicker. Other than the grading and the difficulty of his tests, I would say to take this class if you want to be critically challenged and intrigued.
Dr. Suthakaran is a very amazing lecturer and you learn a lot in his class. However, there are 11 graded materials and 5 of them are within the last two weeks. The exams are hard, and there is a final paper, presentation and exam. If you take this class, be ready to put in the work.
His class will make you uncomfortable at times because he makes you confront your implicit biases so don't take him if you have a closed mind. The material is interesting and you will learn a lot. Exams are tough if you don't know how to apply the material but he is very clear with his expectations for assignments. Pretty funny dude as well.
Sutha is okay; he understands if you need accommodations or a day off. However, the class syllabus + your planner are your best friends here, as he will not remind anyone for upcoming projects in-person or Canvas. I feel as if the instructions for projects were very vague, and he can come off as accusatory if you don't understand certain details.
Dr. Sutha was the best professor I've ever had at UWL. He provides a valuable new worldview unlike any other professor here. He also provides the level that a college class should be. Also very helpful in office hours and helps you succeed if you put in effort. UWL: Do better at uplifting your profs of color, otherwise you are robbing your students
Dr Sutha's classes are transformative if you're willing to go in with an open mind. Psych of Culture and Race completely shifted the way I see myself and others. Show up to class, take good notes, and be honest about your own process and you'll get a lot from his class.
One of the best professors t UWL by a mileeeeeeeee, funny, multicultural, you name it. BUT, the exams are hilariously hard -- the expectation is INSANE you must know the material front and back.
Worst professor I had, very egotistical. Starts off the first day of class saying people can't disagree with him because he has a PhD. He thinks everyone dislikes him because he is not White, but he's just an unfriendly person. Most lectures consisted of him attacking his students. For tests, include the correct key terms, or you won't get credit.
If you go into this course with an open mind and good attitude, your life will be changed. Dr. Sutha helps you see things in a different way through his use of analogies and real-life examples. I believe everyone needs to know this information in this disconnected world. Do not let biased thoughts about this course stop you from experiencing it.
there is a lot of reading. actually a nice and funny guy. only homework is really reading. if you take good notes you'll be fine on the test. wouldn't miss class, if you do miss a class you definitely need to get notes from someone. the exams are very hard if you don't study but if you do and you understand the material you will be fine
Professor is very set on his ideas, unwilling to take another perspective. If you disagree, you are wrong. Also takes very roundabout ways to explain simple topics, often leading to confusion.
Just awful. He doesn't really care about students unless you agree with everything he says. Take a different class.
This professor is only controversial because of the topics he teaches. I encourage you, take his class! His lectures are so interesting to listen to, and the content will change your life and make you a more understanding person. Tests are tricky, but if you read, go to lecture, and take good notes you'll be fine. Everyone should take his classes.
If you are taking this for your Minority Culture G.E. requirement but you aren't interested in psychology I would not take this class. This class if very difficult for a G.E. and can be very frustrating if you do not have a passion for psychology. You are graded by few things and he is a tough grader however his lectures are very interesting.
If you came to college to expand your brain, take PSY 283. If you came to college to just get by, don't take his class, those are the people who give him a 1/5. If you don't want your comfort bubble to be popped take a business class, I don't understand why someone would take a class on Race and be mad that their views are challenged ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
he is not a bad guy. his class is challenging, so unless you know for sure the class is something you're interested in, don't take him. you NEED to be able to put in effort into this class. i think he can come across as appearing rude sometimes, but i do think he cares ab his students
Not specific on what he wanted in papers or what would be on tests. Docked points on paper b/c it was over limit even though he never gave out a page limit. Tests were hard-you had to put EXACTLY what he wanted or you wouldn't get credit, even though there were other things that could be used that were correct. Exams were short answer/essay, no MC.
3rd course with Dr S. Very challenging but worth it. Advise; put aside enough time for the class; don't think you can get away with not studying because the essay style exams and papers require a lot of specific detail and you'll need to know the material. Go to office hours; he's tough but cares about his students and will help if you reach out.
Everything is said in a question format and will ask the same questions 5x over to make a point, ie yes?, do you see it?, do you understand?, what does it mean? 2hr auditory pain.
Yes he is hard, yes he is unhinged, but he's a great professor. This is one of the most challenging, yet gratifying classes I have ever taken. Many psych courses are TOO easy, but this changed the way I behaved and learned as a student in ALL of my classes. If you give him the chance to teach you, you will be thankful. Always ask questions too!!
Very hard and attendance is mandatory but not graded because he doesn't post his lectures or slides. All tests were completely short answer and you had to answer them how he would answer them or you didnt get the points. Also very few assignments.Hes not reasonable whatsoever but I will say I took alot out of his class and he is a good professor.
Sutha is the best. He is hard, but very impactful. The most important aspect of his course is keeping an open mind. The content may be difficult, or even uncomfortable, but the more you listen and learn, the more you begin to understand. Absolutely brilliant, UWL is lucky to have him.
Dr Sutha changed my life. I've had great discussions with him and he was there to support me. Though he structures class in a different way, he gives you the materials needed to do well on exams. If you are willing to learn it is a great lecture to attend. I heavily recommend if you are also a student of color.
Very rewarding, deep discussions in class. Available for office hours and a very interesting and nice person.
I have never learned more in a class in my life, he is a GREAT lecturer, I would have attended his lectures for no credit. But he has extremely high expectations with no clear instructions on what he does and doesn't want to see in the papers. He left me feedback, "This was very poorly don,e" with no comments...a mental health day was taken.
Horrible professor and class, he was biased, he clearly has is own agenda and he is a terrible lecturer. I would have skipped every class if I could have because he was so hateful and rude. His expectations were not clear and provided no clear instructions for assignments and rarely returned grades. Why is he still teaching?
Dr. Sutha changed my perspective on the world and how I look at other people. This guy knows his stuff. Although this can be a good thing, he's a little strict for intro classes. I would like him to be a more lenient grader, but it's just because he's the top dog in his field. He may come off as harsh, but it's only because of our encapsulation.
Someone called him top dog; more like top biased at UWL. His teaching was shaped by clear personal biases, often dismissing views that clashed with his own. The class felt like a stage for his ego. Condescending and dismissive, he discouraged real dialogue. Respect and professionalism were lacking.
Throughout the course, he had very clear biases that negatively affected both classroom dynamics and student engagement. There was a consistent pattern of dismissing differing opinions, especially when expressed by students who didn't align with his worldview.
He frequently came across as condescending and overly self-important. Instead of fostering discussion or encouraging questions, he liked to shut down dialogue, making it difficult to feel comfortable participating. His approach made it seem that his perspective was the only valid one, which undermined the educational environment.
There were times when he showed a lack of respect, particularly toward certain groups of students, which was disappointing and inappropriate in an academic setting.I believe every student deserves a classroom led by someone who is respectful, open-minded, and professional. Unfortunately, this was not my experience with this so-called "professor".
Coming to class was great at first until he made it clear that everyone there were "bad people" for being born the race they were. I even remember the word "r*acist" being drawn on the board when referring to us (his students) I loved the way he taught until he started bashing people for not aligning with him perfectly. Also impossible grader.
