I've been doing english for 4 years at MUN and she is by far the worst prof i've EVER encountered! Very arrogant, picks people out in class and if you don't knoe the answer she makes you look stupid. DOn't ever take a course from her if you wanna do well

Grow up people! Stop whining because you didn't get the mark you wanted. She is a very thorough and helpful professor. Her classes are more like discussions if people aren't afraid to speak up. She is very fair, you get what you deserve.
Hardest english Prof ever- she has her own SET opinion and no matter what you do, you can't change it...not a fun class, definitely not interesting,and greatlyunfair..- VERY HARD MARKER!!:(
Her opinion is the ONLY opinion. Hard marker and unclear about what she expects. I believe she picks out her favourites in her classes & if you are not one to speak up, give your opinion and prepare to be humiliated by her, then u won't get picked!
She is not very helpful and does not explain what she wants her students to do for her. She thinks that the students opinion is wrong and hers is right, especially when it comes to poetry. The students do not have an opinion unless it is her opinion.
Agree with the opinions concerning her high and mighty opinions......avoid this professor!
I've got to say, I like her. She's dry and sometimes blunt but she's a good teacher and shes helpful. Her lectures are to the point and there is no dancing around the material, things are presented clearly.
This is my first year at MUN and Ms.Ingersoll is one of the best profs I have. She is very fair and willing to help her students succeed.
i really didn't like doing poetry with her, but short stories are good with her because she encourages group work and discussion in this.if you don't like english, don't get her! if you do, she makes you think.
Avoid at all cost people, she will make the next three months of your life very miserable, she comes off as a nice person but once she has you in her claws theres no escape!!! Take this as your final warning people

I loved poetry before I had her-- now I dread going to class. Although she does encourage discussion, her opinions are always right-- excuse me, Ingersol, but when was the last time you talked to Phillip Larkin and asked him about the meaning inhispoetry
I found her lectures to be so boring. I really hated how she would ask questions to random people in class, especially since she always had to correct whatever was said.

Didn't like her much at the beginning but she grew on me, not really a hard marker if you know something about poetry. But I would recommend trying another prof first.
She's a really nice person...but it's her opinion that matters...nobody should have their own. She is a difficult marker and I find it interesting that somebody without a ph.d should consider herself so much more brilliant than everyone else.
She is the worst professor I ever had, I did not mind poerty in the beginning and going to her class made me hate it. I used to dread going to class.

Bad rep. is undeserved. Very interesting teacher.
Not only does she berate and belittle you in class, but I never saw such an unfair marker before in my entire life! Heaven help you if your opinion differs from hers because she'll dock you big time for it, no matter how good your essay is.
Did well in her course, but she is a horrible prof. Don't dare disagree with her opinion...you would never say poetry is subjective!
Worst prof ever! Made me change my major! Boring, rambling, closed-minded. If your opinion doesn't match hers, don't express it or you can kiss your chances at a good grade goodbye! She only rewards those who regurgetate her own comments. AWFUL!!!
If you want a good mark just shake your head and smile at everything. Do not dare to comment or tell her you have a different opinion unless you want a low mark. Not helpfull in the least also quite dull and uninteresting.

she doesn't even know anything about poetry! most commen comment on a poem is "i like this poem" ...asks others for their oponions and and then tells them if they're wrong or right, but never gives her own analysis or belief. Very hard marker, i'm doing 3 englishes a's in 2 and a c in this one!!
I like her class. She knows her stuff. She shows a huge interest in what she teaches and I found the topics she highlighted to be the most important for essays and tests so just pay attention, and discuss your take on things and you will enjoy this class.
Is very appreciative of the subject. Enjoys it and wants her class too. If you are interested in poetry I recommend her ten-fold. Probably the most generous woman I've met at MUN, knows her stuff, as for the others who commented that she does not, needs to LISTEN in class. Not easy, not hard. Awesom
Ah she does not explain things in much detail. So what is written on page 43 is important...note it. BUT WHY??? I did well in the course, but I worked like a dog.
Most boring, uninteresting, biased prof I've ever had. She infuriated me, as I am an opinionated person - much like her. I changed my major shortly after taking her class. Wonder why? I hope I never have to take a course with her every again.
A good prof-not getting the credit she deserves. It seems the people in her courses who don't like her never show up, don't listen when they do show up, end up doing poorly and then say she is a bad prof.
She doesn't teach things that are important because she doesn't understand them. Have to agree with her opinions on the poems you're reading or she'll disagree with you.
A little effort goes a long way with this prof. Show some interest, it will make a difference. Likes to hear students opinions, she doesn't have to agree with them, that's why they are opinions!!!

Worse prof ever! If you don't agree on what she thinks the poem is about there's no point to go to class or write an essay, she'll fail you. She don't even know what the poems are about half the time. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to!

she never gave the class any critical comments on the work, rather she would sya nothing more than "poor work" or "superficial" without explain herself.
People who actually like this horrible professor must be either her pets or people who think just like her. Poetry should be subjective, but it isn't so far as she's concerned. Say anything other than what she wants to hear and you will be marked down. She turned a lot of people AWAY from poetry.
Uhh... HORRIBLE! Wants you to spit back her own views for her! I have all A's and B's in the 10 English courses I have done and from her I get a 50%! I put in the time and effort but did not reap the benefits! If you can avoid this woman, do so at all costs as she is not open minded to you take on poetry and he is a brutal marker!
This prof is very narrow minded, if you stray from the opinion of her notes then you are wrong in her eyes. It's almost like she had someone else interpet the poems and she thought that it was the only right answer. VERY UNINFORMED!!!
K, well I'm dropping this course after 2 classes. She has repeatly said she does not agree with other students when they express their own opinions. I usually speak up in class, and I am fairly confident about my knowledge in poetry, but I was afraid to speak, or even look at her! Don't take her course!!!!!!
DON'T take her course... she hates others opinoin's, even when it comes to religion... SHe has to be the worst prof in the English Department, Try getting John Connors or Christopher Lockett instead! ANYONE besides Ingersoll and Somerton...
I didn't find her marking too bad and her lectures were great. She's kind of laid back and will give you lots of time to work on your papers. She will tell you when your wrong, so if you can't take a little criticism then stay away!

I didn't find that she was too hard of a marker. Her classes were fairly interesting, but she doesn't mind telling you when your wrong. Your best bet is to sit there and take it, don't fight back cause it won't be pretty.
This woman only teaches because she loves to hear the sound of her own voice. She marks based on how well you relate HER opinions back to her, if not, you fail. She shouldn't be allowed on the campus, let alone teaching. Horrible ****.
Don't EVER take a course with her. Because of her I almost quit my English degree after first semester. Her opinion is the only one and she'll hate you if you're not like her... a poetry reading babble mouth! If you value your Uni experience and you want an English degree, STAY AWAY!
Lovely. Passionate about her work but not dictatorial. There's a lot of "she's a bad prof because I got a bad grade" comments here, what can I say? If you give her something, you'll get it back.
Taking a class with this teacher made my mark drop over 30%. Usually teachers will give some marks if you back up your argument. If you disagree with what she thinks she writes words like Nonsence on your paper. Worst teacher Ive had at mun. Very boring. Your opinion doesnt count. Stay as far away as possible unless you enjoy failing.

Ok. I am a fourth year engligh major. I took my 2001 course with her not adhering to the comments on this site(though I did read them)...All of these comments are true. This lady is unreal! You will not pls her. Out of the 40 people in that class only one did she like and listen to. Everyone else was wrong. My avg eng mark is 70%. with her 51%.
she seems very intelligent and certainly knows what she is talking about. however, she isn't very flexible with another person's interpretation of a text if it differs from her own, and she is an extremely tough marker. i liked her. i feared her grading my papers
After taking this english couse with S.Ingersoll I never want to take another english course with her every again. She does not respect the opinions of her students and is very hard to communicate with. My average english mark is around a 73% and in her course I have 51%. I would not advise anyone to take a course with her.She is a negative person.
If you do not share her opinion then you will be wrong and therefore get a bad grade in the course. Her grades are inconsistent and the books that she chooses for her courses are not worth reading. I generally love english courses, however, she made this course unbearable. I agree with the other comments in saying that she is a terible prof.
She is definitely a hard marker and I agree that she sticks to her opinions and they do influence her marking. However, she is a fairly nice lady and seems to be passionate about poetry, just stay on her good side and try your best.
She is very much wrong on a very many things and yet she refuses to see otherwise. If a student raises an interpretation of a poem she will almost always immediately start her response with the word "no." If you do not share her opinion--you are wrong. Apparently there is no symbolism in poetry--everything is literal... Be warned.
This last rating was mine and I must say I was very much wrong. She's an incredibly intelligent woman and teaches very strategically. My initial rating was ignorant of a lot of things and I would recommend her. Specifically of importance to note is that she's teaching a difficult subject to teach. I was wrong in a lot of things. She showed me.
Extremely intelligent woman. Intimidating at first, but her course was well worth the fantastic material and insight she provided. I fell in love with every text she chose! Possibly the brightest prof I've had, with definitely the best vocabulary.
i absolutely hated poetry before taking this course, but susan made poetry interesting, and was really helpful. before taking this course, i had never gotten higher than a 55% in english, and i'm getting Bs!

I'm writing this rating after taking two courses with Susan. One of which was a fourth level seminar course, so I got to know her pretty well as a professor. I learned a lot from her but I don't know if she stopped to learn anything from us. Perhaps she has been in the department for too long. She grades low if ideas aren't precisely on point.
