Didn't enjoy her, she makes class boring. Sweet lady tho
An amazing teacher and her dog quinny is cool as hell. You'll have to study but it isnt bs. Im taking her again hopefully:) She can sing in russian too and a couple other languages as well I believe.
She doesn't care at all about what she teaches. She is not interested in being accurate or factual.
she is boring, the way she lectures is confusing yeah you do have to work hard in that class but what makes you have to work hard in that class is the fact that her notes go all out of order, and dont ask many questions she tends to get mad if you do
She's blind so she teaches directly from the book, very good prof
nice person, okay teacher, notes are somewhat out of order, tests somewhat hard, definately need to study.
Worse teacher I have ever had in my entire life. She is not helpful and when you ask her for help she tells you to read the dictonary!!! She jumps all around in the book. The chapters that she says are on the tests may not be the right ones. She guesses!!
She can be a little impatient with idiots, but she knows so much about history and is a really interesting person to talk to. Students can learn a lot from her in and outside of class.
Don't do it, she's hard, boring, and confusing. Don't take this class if you want a D
gives outlines that are hard to follow and confusing
Dr. Ament is a great professor. She is very helpful and is a very kind person. Even though she is blind, she is an extremely talented person. She often sings to the class and plays her guitar. I would certainly reccomend her classes.
Dr. Ament is an awesome teacher who is extremely helpful when you need her. I would defintely recommend her to anyone.
Yo on the real don't take her class. Save your parents money. First she is blind so if u are a visual learner your are screw. She lectures and u have to take notes so fast that you need a new pencil by the end of class. The whole class is sleeping at the
Dr. Ament is very hard to follow, the notes are crazy and out of order she lectures straight from the book every single class, tests are hard, and takes off for attendance come on we could be at home reading the dang book!
HARD AS HELL, avoid at all costs
I would never recommend her to anyone. She is a very intelligent person but if you are not a auditory learner you will never pass her class. She says things like "I hope the chart is still in your book because you need to know it." I barely g
Hardest class, unless you can learn a great deal just by listening to a person stand in front of the class and talk. Outlines for tests are very vague.
AMAZING
Dr. Ament is a great professor. She does give out a good number of material to learn from, but its for a good cause. You will learn a lot in her class. Plus, outside of the classroom, she is very friendly and helpful. Her lower level classes are hard, but her upper level ones are fun.
this class was very hard and boring. she just sits there and lectures and lectures,.. and lectures.. bring notebooks, pens, laptops, tape recorders, and a video recorder to be able to get all the notes down..mowh her
Her lectures are very informative and she tells you everything you need for the tests. She gives curves on the tests as well, so my lowest test grade has still been an A.
she is an amazing teacher - i have never enjoyed a history class like i have enjoyed this one - this is not a pie class but if you put forth the effort you really will get a lot out of her class - i would certainly recommend her to anyone - she also gives lots of extra credit opportunity to help out
I found Dr.Ament's class hard because I had it at 8am and she does just lecture, no visuals. However, she is a very nice lady, and I have a lot of respect for her b/c she is blind and I'm sure she puts up with a lot because of that. My advice:take notes, read, and try to take it later than 8am!
Shes very helpful if you ask, would definitely reccommend her class not @ 8am, she does not present visuals and does lecture almost the entire period. The class is not impossible, just be prepared to work extra and definitely ask her if you need help.
IMPOSSIBLE!!! This class was so hard and boring. You must be an auditory learner because there are NO VISUALS except the textbook. Do not sign up for this class unless you already have a strong history background.
Dr. Ament is blind which is why she cannot give visual aide. Too many students are used to their educatin being handed to them and being based on technology, not real learning. Yes it's hard, but only if you don't try. She has implemented the web into her lectures if the students help navigate.
AWEFUL!!!! Not a very interesting class. Her blindness is not an avantage. Very boring, same thing over and over again, everyday. Outlines are just about useless. Tests are VERY hard.
She is a great teacher! Her lectures do tend to get boring and her tests are hard...but study the outlines really well and u should do fine! She is also a VERY FAST talker so make sure u can keep up with taking notes! She also gives quite a bit of extra credit!
WORST CLASS EVER!!!!!!!!! DON'T TAKE HER IF U CAN AVOID IT! I went into her class with an overall GPA of 3.9, cuz of her, i left with a 3.4 (crying!) She's mean, rude, and being blind does not make her any less prone to insults! SHE SUCKS!!! Trust me
Dr. Ament is only "hard" for the students who don't want to put forth any effort (If you don't want to work don't be in college!). She is a wonderful professor who is willing to help you. If you come to class, take notes, and read the chapters you'll get an A - I know this from personal experience.
Its not because she's blind, but that does prove to be difficult because there is no visual aid provided in the class. She lectures "directly from the book" but it ends up being slightly different from whats in the book sometimes so you don't know what will be on the test!
I made an A in her class, however if we were provided with visual aides learning would be much easier. The entire class is all lecture, not to be offensive but the blindness hinders us to have visual aides, other than that she explains material incredible well and thorough. It would help to have maps show us movement of peoples. Not an easy A.
If you go along with what she says in lecture you would do better then if you just study from the book. What she says in lecture will be on the test. There were 4 test and an extra paper. If you make a power point she will add lots of points on you grade. So I would suggest to do all the extra credit then u would def get an A.
A great professor. Though it is cheesy of myspace to rate a persons "hotness."
I made a D in this class the semester before and wanted to re take it for a better grade...She was incredible, yeah there are no visual aides but if you take notes and study.... you are golden... I came out of her class with an A
This lady is blind, and has a seeing eye dog. Because of this, it's awkward because she never looks directly at you if she asks a question, and one of her eyes is for lack of a better term, "googly". That isn't to say you shouldn't take her on, however; she's very intelligent and very willing to help if you need it. Being able to sleep trouble-free during lecture is a nice bonus too.
I admire her very much for overcoming her handicap as she has. It was a gen ed class, it was a little boring at times, but if you fell asleep, she didn't know it! Her tests were easy and she always emailed us the lecture outlines. I'd recommend her to anyone.
its nice that she overame her blindness to become a teacher but she sucks at teaching....he tests are EXTREMELY hard and her lectures tend to wander off and she does not follow the outline she gives you....i am struggling to maintain a D and her limited extra credit she gives is hard....she isnt very helpful outside of classroom either
shes horrible , she doesnt connect with the student and shes not helpful in any manner infact shes rude.
Probably the most horrible professor that I've ever had at Radford. Avoid at all costs, the lady is the least personable person I've ever met. If you are unfortunate enough to have to go to her office, good luck as she seems especially hostile when asked questions in her office.
Stay away from Dr. Ament unless you love SLOW TORTORE! Dr. Ament is not a nice person and does not have a kind personality. Students tend to sleep through her lectures, read, or simply surf the net during class because she couldnt see them. She often seemed very unprepared and taught straight from her notes. If possible, choose another professor.
Only take this class if you are a natural at history. She's a nice lady and her class is pretty laid back but the only grades for the entire semester are 3 tests and an optional paper. She is really unclear in her notes and they dont help on the tests. I wouldn't take her again.
shes not a mean lady...just really borring...oh yeah shes blind and has a seeing eye dog so class was definitally different. definitally bring something to do in her class( text message someone, bring ur laptop, other homework) some days she will sing for u! shes a good singer!
She's a nice lady, I wouldn't say she was a bad teacher either. People do tend to do other things in her class. Her tests aren't easy, but if you study, you should get a nice grade. Also, the book seems more helpful than her notes
She is a sweetheart.
She is blind so she doesnt use visual aids besides random pictures of rulers a ppt would really help. The only grades are 5 tests which are very hard and the review guide she emails you is very vauge as to what will be on the test. It basically is like understand the french revolution. There is extra credit which I did take advantage of.
Being a history major, I struggled at first in her lower level classes because she basically just lectured in a monotone voice. However, if you get the chance to take one of her upper level courses, especially if it's about Russia, do so. You will learn much about the country's history.
do not take. she is blind, so there is no visual aids. unsure how she dresses herself so well. sings like Sanjaya. you have to read from the book because you will not get anything from her.
This teacher is awesome! Ive heard people say her 100 level classes are boring, but having taken her 300 level classes have been amazing. Shes a really great proff to have, and is very helpful. Her dog is a sweetie too!
This class is terrible. She is a nice teacher though. I give her props for teaching being blind and all but she provides no aids to take notes other than her monotone voice.. It isn't very clear what you need to know because she is so vague in her outlines and study guides
Only take her upper level classes if you love book reviews. Super nice lady, but getting all material down on paper and knowing what to study can be difficult. She lets you use a note card which is cool, but God only knows what you should put down on the thing
she is blind, but many students got over that quickly. there's no reason to fail this class. she email weekly outlines of her notes. he study guides cover everything thats on the test. the quizzes are counted as extra credit. the only downside about the class was that it was i took it at 8am.
What a wonderful professor! Only paper is optional, tests are taken directly from weekly outlines and test study guides she sends by e-mail. All quizzes are extra credit to the tests and there are 2-3 five question quizzes per test. So long as you show up to class and study the outline for the test, you can make an easy A.
she's so easy- she gives extra credit quizzes, tests are multiple choice, and the only assigned paper is optional. i'm sorry but you just can't lose in this class unless you are rude to her and come on the woman is blind so be respectful! not to mention sometimes she sings and plays guitar which is just plain cool.
She is incredibly sweet, but because she is blind there are not a lot of visuals. I have traditionally been a visual learner so this class was harder for me. She has an attendance policy, but it's not too bad. I took her at 8am and a lot of people fell asleep. She offers extra credit quizzes about once a week to add points on your exams.
I love her she is one of my favorite teachers. I have learned so much from her. Her tests are both hard and medium just depends on the test. I admire her because she is blind and still travels all over has dr in a few things and teaches most amazing person ever. She also has the most amazing singing voice. i love it when she sings.kind person.
I have had Dr. Adment for two classes, one was an intro the other a 300 level. She is a very smart lady and knows history. When my father passed away during spring semester she went out of her way to help me not only with class work but with other things I was dealing with at the time. You must read and study to get a good grade, but I recommend he
Very kind teacher-really cool. She does speak very very fast during lectures-I had trouble keeping up but most of the stuff is in the book. READ THE BOOK! A lot of info in there is on the exams. Exams are terribly hard, but she does make you learn a lot.
Very intelligent, however there are to no visual aids (blind) and all she does is ramble on about pointless history all 90 minutes. Her class is extremely boring and she takes role every day. There are only 2 grades, quizes and exams. The only good thing is quizes count as extra credit points on exams, If you dont have to take this class DON'T!
If you are bad at taking tests I recomend getting a different teacher. She only gives tests, and they are pretty difficult.
Learned a great deal in this class. I had to read assigned books and take notes on what I read. A lot of reading. If you want to skate through do not take this class. If you want to have knowledge about subject matter when you are done, take her. She accents lecture with guitar playing and a beautiful singing voice.Passionate about Russian history.
This class is HARD!!!!!! unless you can memorize every little detail that is in the book and lectures .. dont take this class... I looked at all the comments and i read "extra credit" so ithought i would do okay.. but the exams are really hard. :(
looking around all the negative comments, its mostly from the 101 level individuals taking her for gen ed. I will admit she probably is harder for gen ed students. History majors like me will find her interesting. she has a great knowledge on the material and lets you use a note card for her exams. the class goes surprisingly faster than you think
It's not necessarily that she's a bad professor. She is just incredibly hard to follow sometimes. She gets off topic very easily, and even when I memorized the entire outline I got an 85. I don't generally make B's in classes, I had to withdraw to keep from completely messing up my GPA
Okay, so we all know Radford is full of students looking for an easy A, so I have to disappoint you: this is not where you will find one. However, Professor Ament is a great example of why a smart guy/gal can still get a good education at Radford. A competent professor who loves her subject, willing to help the individual when asked.
I can see why she would be a good teacher for upperclassman, but she really has no business teaching a gen ed course at all. Plus, the two times I had class conflicts she was kind of rude.
i took her for a gen ed course and altho she isnt that bad i wouldnt take her again, the tests sometime hav random ?s that werent on the outline, u dont hav to go to class but u should cuz she takes atendance sometimes and gives quizes that add points to tests, she likes when ppl talk and ask ?s, the only reason i got As on tests is the quiz points
Not easy not that hard, pretty boring. Def get the book if u want to get better grades on the book, altho u shud rent it not buy it, sometimes lets u out early so u dont get ahead of other classes, she sang once or twice.
Very boring class, you should probably not bring your laptop to class because i can guarantee that all you'll do is look at facebook. She uses powerpoint, but its all pictures. The instructor is blind and uses a seeing eye dog, and that's why i recommend not bringing a laptop or cell phone, cause you can get away with it. Overall a very dry class.
very nice professor but only has a couple of exams that cover way too many chapters!
very nice and willing to help. although, she only has a couple of exams that cover way too many chapters. she does give outlines for every chapter that are very helpful though. this class isn't impossible, but it's definitely not an easy a.
Hardest class I've taken in college. I dont want to say the fact that she's blind impacts her teaching but it does. The outlines make no sense.
Don't let the other reviews discourage you from taking her. You have to do your work, read, and pay attention. That's really not too much to ask. She is the sweetest professor I've had at Radford and is willing to help anyone!I watched so many people fail in that class, just because they were lazy. If you're serious about school this class is easy.
She is very knowledgeable about the information, sends outline to follow along with in class, and study guides for tests. But I study all the time for this test and am barely getting by with good grades. Very discouraging class, tests cover ALOT of a material some not even in the book/lectures. The fact that she is blind is a disadvantage.
Outlines and lectures are all over the place and it is very hard to take notes. Listening is key. As is reading. She is very nice and helpful though if you approach her.
Do not take if you are a visual learner. The PowerPoints are only pictures. I found that she is really hard to follow and gets off topic very easily as well. I do not recommend taking if you are a bad test taker. The tests cover a lot of material and some of it is not covered in the lectures. The book was more helpful than she was in my opinion.
ok first things first it is hard to make a one on one connection with her because, she is blind so she can match names with faces so on that level its hard just because she just lectures and uses power points this class isn't to bad she is a great teacher you just have to make sure you read and take notes
The fact that she is blind is just a disadvantage. Her class is straight lecture with no notes & guidelines are next to useless. Her tests have a ton of material and she doesn't even know the chapters we're on in the book. I went to her for help and she basically told me to drop. DO NOT take if you're a visual learner or apparently if you need help
Since she can not see it makes it really hard. She is all over the place with her notes. I do not recommend her if you can switch out do it. She is not willing to work with you either.
She is blind, but her class is simple. She lectures, hands out things from time to time, and then tests on her notes. She is very friendly and helpful if you ask. The students in my class were completely rude to her and I felt bad, they didn't participate or answer her questions, they slept and played on phones, and then blame her for bad grades.
I'm not someone who is good at history which was a major issue in this class. The fact that she was blind was also a disadvantage. Her class is straight lecture, she gives an occasional handout which is irrelevant and does not help with further understanding. I got a tutor and still got a 56 on tests. I dropped the class.
She is a kind person, who grades hard. But if you go to her during office hours, she will tell you exactly what you need to study for and exactly what you need to fix so you can improve. The books in the class are interesting but can be intimidating. Show up, take notes, ask questions. Do what you're supposed to do as a student and you'll be fine.
Dr. Ament is a great teacher despite being blind. The quizzes are ALL extra credit & she's more than willing to help her students. I have an A in her Hist 102 class & I've never had to look at the book before. Whenever I have a question about something in her lecture, I either stop her mid-lecture or talk to her about it after class. She's great.
Dr. Ament is a super sweet woman that is in the wrong career field. Her tests cover a ridiculous amount of topics, some of which she doesn't even cover in class. The book will be your best friend. Her hand outs are pointless and the study guides she emails the class make no sense whatsoever. I'm a history major and I'm barely making a C.
Although she is blind she is a nice professor who knows what she is talking about. If you have a question she is willing to help you. There are a few quizzes that are extra credit on the test but there are only 4 tests and those are the only grades in the class. Tests cover A LOT of topics and can be confusing.
If you get this professor, withdraw immediately. Staying in this class will be the worst mistake of your life.
This class will be the death of you and your GPA. She is not helpful at all. She can be a very sweet woman, but she should choose another career because teaching is not for her. If you take this class you will need to teach yourself the material. Her lectures are very long, boring, and dry. Do not sign up for this course!!!!
She is very sweet and wonderful person, but the exams cover to much material, and rather than choosing one topic and delving into it, there is a lot of scratching the surface of a thousand different things. Definitely way to difficult to learn in this class for a 100 level course.
This professor is very hard. You better be ready to study. She is all lecture which is not good for me because i need visual stuff on the board like power points and not just pictures of random people. I studied a lot and still did not have any luck in the class. She is a nice woman and her assistant is too but a very hard teacher.
Although she is blind, she is brilliant! She knows what she's talking about, she just can't explain it very well to her students. The tests have TOO much material on them and her lectures don't go into enough detail & the book is useless as well. There's no extra credit at all either. Try to get a different professor if you're not good at history.
Awful! If you don't like history and you don't like lectures please don't take her. I've never skipped class, I had a 4.0 before her class and currently have a c- it's terrible and you are told to self teach. If you take her, good luck
I did not like the way this class was set up. But this is coming from someone who doesnt like history. Your grade was based on three tests and a few quizzes. Lectures were very terrible because there was no actual notes, you just have to sit and listen. I don't work best in these classes so I had bad notes to study. She has a cute seeing dog tho
This is the hardest class ever! I have all A's except in this class!!! She only grades tests and quizes so don't expect extra credit or homework grades. She speaks so fast and I cam't keep up. If you even touch your phone you get an absence for the day. DO NOT MISS THIS CLASS!
Do not take her class. She makes the class extremely difficult, only grades tests so your grade for the semester is based upon four tests thats it! Gets off track and forgets things
First of all, this teacher is blind, which is a huge disadvantage. She is rude. You can't just raise your hand, you have to make a noise like you're some sort of animal to get her attention. She gets mad when students go to the bathroom. She has a creepy assistant who stares you down the entire class. She speaks the notes. At least has a cute dog
First off shes blind. Her assistance is a math major so no help. He gives you zeros if you have your phone in your hand for 6 sec. He watches you and its super creepy and unconformable. She very rude. one girl actually cheated all year and when we said something about it she just laughed, she didn' believe us but whatever. DONT PICK THIS TEACHER!!
Dr Ament is passionate about Russian studies and very knowledgeable. Unfortunately she does not provide any study guides and the RU doesn't help her transcribe braille to text; so no lecture outlines. You will have to buy several large books for her class, and read 100+ pages a week. She grades you on a few papers and a couple all-written exams.
First off, shes blind which puts her at a disadvantage. She speaks the notes and drifts off topic a lot. Her tests are too long and those tests are your only grades for the semester. Shes extremely rude as well, she hates it when students use the restroom. Her assistant stares at you all class and its really creepy. Do not take her class ever.
Her test are 60 questions plus and the study guides she gives you are way too long and you aren't even sure what you're studying is even gonna be on the test. Terrible professor also very rude. I can't believe after all these reviews about professors at Radford that are bad how are they still a teacher here.
The class is solely lecture (without notes on the board) so if you arent the best at note taking she isnt for you. No graded assignments other than 4 exams although you have the opportunity to gain ec on them with pop quizzes. The only way to do well on the exams is to attend every class, actually read the textbook, and really study hard.
Due to COVID the lectures are a power point online of her just talking. She goes off topic a lot and is super boring. She emails us an outline of the chapter each week which don't help at all. There's a quiz each week that has a 10 min time limit and 10 questions which are super hard and don't relate to the content from the outline. DONT TAKE HER!
Be prepared to take A LOT of notes in this class, theyre about 12 subjects that you take about 3-4 notes of pages every week then you take a quick 10 question quiz on Friday. Quizzes will make or break ur grade, make sure to do them, if you dont do notes, quiz scores gonna suck. She is blind so lectures are just her talking to you for an hour.
Dr. Ament is a nice person but grading is strict and non-negotiable.
Tests can only be taken on non class days, all notes besides useless outlines must be hand written or typed. Has never given us a chapter to study for, does not allow retakes and only grades are 10 minute 10 question quizzes with some true or false. Haven't had a worse learning experience anywhere and would never expect from a college professor.
Personally I find the lectures extremely interesting. Dr. Ament is visually impaired, but I don't think it affects her teaching ability. It is quiz heavy and if you don't take notes/study, you're screwed. My advice if you're new to lecture based learning, is to work on your note taking, or record them. Speak up in her class if you have questions :)
DO NOT take this class. Made us buy a textbook but never told us what chapters to read when, everyone I know in there is failing just like me, she stands up there and talks for an hour and a half and if you look at your phone you get yelled at. Assigns quizzes that have to be taken on a non-class day. Does not put notes on the screen, just TALKS.
Super nice lady, has a helper because she's blind, it wasn't a mandatory class for me so because it had a bunch of work I dropped it
I didnt learn anything. We were told to buy a textbook when Dr. Ament used a different one to teach us. The material that was on the test most of the time was never taught during the lecture. She was also rude when we asked for help because we didn't understand the material due to it coming from a different textbook.
Dr. Ament is a very kind professor and she likes to joke around. She's very passionate in what she teaches. It's slightly difficult because she doesn't do notes, you have to write yourself what you feel is important, but as long as you read your book it's an easy class to pass. Even then, I hardly read and got just below an A in her class.
My personal belief is that this professor should retire and stop teaching all together. I have had this professor for many semesters and struggle to comprehend anything in her lectures. I do understand that this professor has restraints on her teaching ability due to her disability, however it makes it really difficult to move along in her class.
Dr. Ament is a very intelligent and experienced woman, but she is an awful lecturer. She does not give slideshows/notes and speaks extremely fast so it's extremely hard to take notes. I can't understand her accent which means I cannot write down half the words she is saying to even attempt to look it up later.
I would not take this professor under ANY circumstance, unless it is a requirement. Quizzes on non class days, no phones under any circumstance, mental absences are taken by the student aid, hour and fifteen minute lecture, "theoretical handouts" she posts documents on d2l instead, in person scan-tron exams.
