She is a very good teacher. She cares every students in her class and helps a lot. I am a kind of shy person, but she tries to ask me what I think. If you like talking in the class, take her class. You'll have fun!!
Will go the extra mile for her student. Do the reading and have fun and you will be fine.
Ms. Carlton is an excellent teacher. She has helped me learn how to write well and how to conduct myself in professional situations. She's the best!
A wonderful teacher who takes the time to give personalized attention. However, needs to exercise more control over the class, as she will change her schedule to accommodate students who have not read the assignment causing us to waste time.
Best teacher I've ever had. Very caring and wants you to get an A
Wonderful teacher. Material is always presented fairly clearly, she allows for personal inrepretation in addition to the standard. Even if you are doing well, go to paper confrences with her, she will help you greatly improve your writing!Have fun do well
THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. MORE PROFESSORS NEED TO BE LIKE HER : IN ATTITUDE, AND IN TEACHING. I REALLY ENJOYED HER CLASS AND IF I COULD I WOULD TAKE HER FOR THE REST OF MY ENGLISH CLASSES AT SANTA FE.
Mrs. Carlton is a very nice teacher. Although she assigns a lot of work, she helps us get through it. I wish I had taken her for an English class.
I liked Mrs. Carlton. All we did in this class was write essays. No grammer, which could be a good and bad thing. She lets you revise your essays to make a better grade.
Mrs. Carlton is a good teacher, she is very nice and funny. You do a lot of essays but she helps you. She lets you rewrite any essay for a better grade.
I have never been great at english, always got B's and i got an A out of her class. She lets you revise your papers as many times as you want to get the best grade possible. Final exam is easy. Does do groupwork which I didnt like. 6,000 words for the class, but just like every other class. So be ready. It's easy for and english class.
Lots of in class essays during summer A courses. She does allow you to revise, which is great if you are the type that feels pressured under timed writing conditions The only negative aspect of her class was that at times she allowed an individual to dominate the essay topic with his or her own views, which often times took up half the class time.
Mrs. Carlton's class is not easy, but I learned a lot. She expects a lot from a student. You have to attend class!! You have to study grammar--not my favorite thing. You have to write a lot. But she is wlling to help you and usually lets you revise.
Mrs. Carlton is the perfect professor to take for any english class =) I had a hard time in Enc 1102 because I'm not a strong writer. She allows you to revise and revise to get the best possible grade on your papers. A lot of writting but it is a Gordon Rule class. I would take her again for any english class.
I had Ms. Carlton for both 1101 and 1102 and think she is the best instructor I have ever had for any class at this school. If you can just deal with the fact that it is mandatory to write as much as you will have to, and don't make excuses for it, you will learn so much and be very impressed with this instructor! I promise!
this professor was nice. very understandable for the most part. did have a small disagreement with her over an online discussion, but other than this I would take her again for any english class. a lot of writing, but hey, this is english right? Do your work and it's an easy A.
Great teacher, very understanding. Everything is spelled out for you on a weekly basis. Just remember to check the assignments block on WebCT, she doesn't hound you about the dates but you will miss assignments if you don't track it yourself. The assignments are easy and understandable. She gives extra credit if you need it also. Highly reccomended
Loves teaching and loves her students. She is very fair but will not tolerate cheating.
Carlton is a wonderful instructor for a creative writing course. She is encouraging to those who don't consider themselves great writers of fiction. Even if the class was hard for me, I still enjoyed her as an instructor.
This was web based. It was challenging, fun and challenging. I had some problems finding the discussions I was to use and we had a sub that got us off kilter but it was a good experience. She is very helpful-I would recommend her highly!
If you take her online... its pretty easy... but her grading is a bit hard... if you are a good writer you'll pass her class with an A... but I would recommend her... she gives about 3 or 4 papers throughout the course.
I took this class online. Shes hard on grading, you have to follow the guidelines to make a good grade. She gives 5 essays and drop the lowest grade. Have discussions every week.
All I have to say is she is a wonderful professor! Take her class
Her standards for writing are way to high and you can never impress her with any essay she always gives a C or lower.
I took her a couple years back, Ms. Carlton is amazing! She's very helpful inside & outside of class, but you have to step up and do the work. I would recommend her to anyone that actually plans to show up to class and write. If I ever come across another class she's teaching, I'll take it in a heartbeat - even if I don't need it.
i suggest you take her if you want to take composition online. all u have to do is do write in the discussion forum once a week and write 4 750 word essays. one is dropped.
I took her class online. She grades tough but fair. You HAVE to do the weekly discussions on the chat boards online. AND DO NOT BUY THE BEDFORD HANDBOOK... you'll have the entire book available online. She takes a long time to grade papers and you won't know your overall grades until the end of the course. But I got an A+ just doing what she asked.
I have never been so ready for a class to be over!!!!
Great teacher. I took her online class and the discussions are easy and as long as you keep up with the work, it's not hard to get a good grade. Answers questions relatively quickly and is very friendly. I will take another English class with her :)
she is pretty strict and makes you do a good amount of work. took her online and had my hands full with her class
I took this class in the spring and online. Prof. Carlton a great teacher. There is a discussion due every week and you write 4 papers. She has quizzes that counts as a bonus. SHe will get back to you ASAP. You will use the books. 1 final exam. I really enjoyed the class and improved on my writing skills with this class.
I took her class online. She grades tough but fair. You HAVE to do the weekly discussions. There are 4 papers to write and quizzes you can take for a bonus grade. She is extremely helpful.
Took her class online. She is very organized with Angel. Weekly discussions, bonus quizzes, 4 essays, could re write the first essay for a better grade, had a extra credit essay too. I learned a lot. The bad side- lots of peer reviews on essays.I feel like I graded 100 essays this semester, but I'd take her again because she actually teaches.
Professor Carlton was a hard teacher to please. There was a discussion due every week, 4 essays for the semester, and a short answer exam. She offers an optional essay which, if your like me, you will need. She is extremely tough grading the papers. Overall, I learned a lot but it was a tough class to get through.
Tough!
I took her online. I think she is a wonderful teacher and willing to work with you. You use the book and there are assignments weekly. If you read the material and do the work you will make a good grade.
I've had this prof for 1102 and Fiction, both online. She is clear and helpful, but I must agree about her grading. I am a skilled writer and English student and have never made more than a B on a paper I've written in either class. She lets you revise for more credit in FIC. If you are weak AT ALL in grammar or are a week writer in general, avoid
This class was by far the hardest! She is very strict about how things are structured and even stricter when it comes to grading. I would advise finding another instructor, unless you are up for a challenge. I have a 4.0GPA and I am praying that I get at least a C in this course.
Had a hard time with this class but as long as you email her and go to the writing lab you shouldn't have too much of a problem passing her class.
I took this class online last fall, and... it was very tough. She was very structured and organized on Angel, but she only put half the course's assignments on the calendar, which was annoying.. All in all, I'm just glad I passed.
Very helpful, and responds to emails in a timely manner. The class is pretty average, but can be tough at times. Online she requires you to take part in nearly all discussions, students are only allowed to miss two. Would recommend. (:
This professor does not accept late work. She doesn't care if you are in the hospital or have a doctors note. She doesn't care if you experience technical difficulties uploading work to canvas she won't help or accept your work. Would not recommend. The course is also very confusing. I took online.
Don't ever take a class with her. Super tough, rude and confusing! NOT recommended!
Professor was very slow in returning graded work so it is difficult to gage where you are in the class. Her feedback was very generic referring you back to handouts, the bedford handbook, or the open lab. Structure of class: write, review your peers work, peers review your work. If you are not a strong writer, do not take this class.
Didn't return previous work before next assignment was due; continuously extended deadlines for those who missed assignments. Not a hard course, but very little guidance was given as to assignment details, etc. so most students will struggle.
She was very unorganized and not very helpful with explaining the assignments. You pretty much have to teach yourself.
Helpful but expects a lot.
She expects a lot and she gives feedback too late for it to help with other assignments. She is not helpful, and wouldn't round up my grade when it was an 89.9, or give feedback on the final exam. I cannot stand her.
Surprised to read negative comments. Seems some people missed teacher's comments or didn't understand that grades couldn't be rounded up because the lowest essay grade and discussion grades were dropped--boosted my grade a lot by doing this! Thanks Ms. Carlton!
Learned a lot in this class, including grammar, something I'd been missing. She saved me from embarrassment later in college because she cared enough to teach. Can't believe some of the mistakes I was still making! I would recommend this class to anybody who doesn't mind working.
Her feedback comes far too late and is not helpful. She did not respond to emails. I have a 4.0 yet I dropped her class because she is next to useless. In fact, 30 days after I dropped her class she finally graded some of my assignments.
I took this class online and that was a huge mistake. This teacher can not communicate using the written language. This poses a problem for anyone taking this course online.
Takes a long time to get work back. Lots of my returned work has come into Canvas at midnight or later - which is reason for concern in my opinion.
Seems nice. Will give you any answers you need. However, very confusing on when she wants things due. Would not recommend her.
This class is hard. I took it online and it was a nightmare for me in the beginning. She doesn't really tell you what she is looking for in your paper until later in the course, so your first couple of essays are gonna probably bomb. READ EVERYTHING SHE GIVES YOU, the stuff she gives you is WHAT SHE IS LOOKING FOR, and do your MLA standards
Alot of writing, but it is a college comp class. She does not give grades, you must earn them. She does have office hours and is willing to talk, but not fitting if you work during the day :-( Participation in discussions are mandatory, that is where your attendance is based from since the class is online. So far an A, 1 week to go...
Professor Carlton is a great English teacher! Her online class is extremely easy to do well in. Most of it is discussion boards and a couple essays. She responds back fast for any questions. I would recommend this class for anyone who wants to do English online!
Professor Carlton is extremely hard working. Many posts and responses to e-mail in late night or early AM like 1 or 2 AM. She always makes office hours known and if there are any changes. She really wants her students to do well in her class. This is a heavy work load class and very writing intense, but a good grade can be made for the work you do.
Wonderful Professor. If you have questions ask her, she will help. 4 essay with an optional 5th to drop lowest grade. Discussions are a must because it counts for attendance. Peer reviews on essays. This class is very writing focused, it is not an easy A. However, if you do the work and use the resources an A is achievable.
Takes forever to return grades. she is very unclear of what she wants I would recommend taking any other class but this one
Extremely unhelpful!! I have worked my butt off writing essays for this lady and she never helps me out. She's rude and unresponsive and insensitive to her her students needs!!! Now I have to take this class a 3rd time thanks to her.....
I took this class online and her grading was crazy. I have no idea what she expected from an online class but its kinda different than a campus class. How can you give a low grade for a journal entry? Its my thoughts. Geesh! Will never take her class again. I passed 1101 with an A now I have an C average in 1102.
Worst professor I have ever had. Never tells you what's wrong and she takes forever when grading. I have never failed an English paper in my entire life until this lady. Save your time and abort this mission immediately! Seriously though, she's awful.
She was a pretty good professor. She is there for you and helps you out.
Even though it is harder than your usual English class, it is very doable to get an "A" in the course. Don't expect to get A's on half-assed assignments. In contrast, you actually have to work for them. Like many others, I was baffled by the amount of work, but my writing improved tremendously as a result.
Takes forever to get feedback and grades. Usually comes in during the middle of the night. Also, by the time you receive the feedback it's useless cause the due date for the next assignment has passed. Unclear rubrics and vague answers. She also has changed the due dates for assignments on the day the assignment is due.
Good class.
Had to take this class twice cause of her. She thoroughly grades everything and marks for every little bitty error off your grade. I BARELY PASSED because she was so tough on me. If you want an easy english class don't take her.
I loved having Professor Carlton as my teacher! The only reason I can understand the poor reviews is if that student didn't follow her directions. She is very clear on her directions and gives you handouts. Anytime I had a questions, she emailed me back within that same day. I would strongly suggest taking her! Easy A if you follow directions.
Prof Carlton was very clear about her expectations for the course. We were required to participate in a discussion every week and there were 4 essays to be done throughout the semester. Prof Carlton is very fair and really wants everyone to pass. She gives lots of opportunities to earn extra credit. She was also very responsive to emails.
I've had Professor Carlton for ENC1101 & ENC1102. Responds to my emails the same day. Has her working hours posted every week. SUPER organized. Gives an optional essay to better student's grades. No surprise assignments and directions are clear. I love her as a professor!
The purpose of taking a class is to learn from the teacher and get evaluated according to your level of knowledge. If someone is taking this class its obvious that the person will need help with english writing, therefore being a harsh grader is not helpful, and actually demotivates students. Not recommended.
Please do not take Suzanne Carlton. She is a harsh grader. Highly NOT RECOMMENDED
You got to learn how to write essays by yourself. She don't know how to teach and when you ask her about the grade you get she always find an excuse. Don't take class with her if you want to pass .
Her grading makes no sense, and her feedback on essays and HW honestly don't help at all. Ive always been a straight A+ student in any English class. I just took her online class for a prerequisite credit, and I'm actually struggling getting an A due to her harsh grading. Don't take her!!!
I have NEVER failed an English paper until this teacher. She gives feedbacks on essays but half the stuff she says does not make any sense. She talks to you as if you were an English teacher and not a student. You basically have to learn how to write essays by yourself. She will find an excuse for your grade. Find a different teacher if you can!!
Decent teacher. But no matter what I did to correct assignments, I received consistent 89s.
Do not take this prof. I have always gotten As in all English honors classes I took in High School but this prof. is a really tough grader. She will give feedback, but when you correct it and turn it in she will still find other things to take off points for. One time, she gave me a 73 on a paper and could not even explain to me what I did wrong.
By far the harshest grader I have ever met.
Do not take this prof if you want a decent grade.
I would not recommend to my worst enemy.
She acts like we are professional writers and will take off 20 points for doing 2 things wrong.
Wish I read the reviews on here before choosing her when registering
This is my fourth semester of college and first non-A. She is a tough grader.
Online. She can be a little on the vague side. She is helpful if you ask. Pay very close attention to instructions! She wants to teach, is accessible, and understanding. Not a bad professor. This is not high school English! Not a easy A but realistic.
Horrible is the best thing I can say. I would avoid this class. She expects to much out of a freshman class. I would not take any other classes with her. Stay away and thank me later. She expects to much out of everyone. She treats it as a senior level class. Always changes due dates, and tells you nothing about it. Avoid avoid avoid
Knows subject. Learn from her. Work for it. Fine. She should be timely w/feedback, return of/grading of assigns. Tough grader; need feedback to correct errors prior to next paper. Lots of homework. Fine. Need timely comments. Final essay--graded at 12:01 a.m. Canvas cut access early. E-mailed her 3x for copy. No reply. I paid for this class.
She grades extremely hard. You write 4-5 essays a semester and due a discussion every week. The essays are 85% of your grade while discussions are only 15%, so if you get a bad grade on an essay it is almost impossible to bring your grade up.
Professor Carlton is a nice, however no matter what you do it seems she simply likes to fail papers. She will specifically tell you what to edit, when fixed some how it and more things will be incorrect. She grades as if you should be writing for the new York times. This is an entry level college course. do not take if you want to pass.
I took this class online. This professor is a really sweet lady. She gives really good feedback on assignments and offers students plenty of time to get one on one help with papers and other assignments. Lots of resources are provided and the discussions are really helpful for preparing for future papers.
Definitely one of my least favorite teachers Ive ever had. She expects your life to revolve around her class. She is a tough grader and doesnt seem to realize that this is entry level college English. You miss one discussion your grade will suffer. Her discussion posts arent fun. She expects you to write paragraph responses to one sentence.
Suzanne Carlton ENC1101 is the worst teacher to take for an online class. She didn't respond fast enough, she's not at all clear on whats wrong with your work. she takes forever to grade and when she does, she gives low grades. she will not call you back. she told a student she didn't like their writing style so thats why she failed her.
She is not good at grading and she stacks up work because she doesn't have good due dates.
Carlton is an extremely tough grader but she means well and wants her students to succeed. Her feedback can be vague but I was still able to benefit from it. She cares about her students and if you are willing to go the extra mile in improving your writing in her class, your efforts will not go unnoticed. I would take her class again in the future.
Currently in this course for summer A.... This professor does not care about her students passing the course. She's here to pick apart your work and doesn't give out A papers. So far we are three essays in, the averages for 2 of the 3 essays for my class were all failing grades. She is not very quick with grading assignments making it hard to pass
She is a very hard grader. I swear I spend so much time on writing my papers and re-reading them and she just gives me back the worst grade possible. I know my papers aren't bad either because I submit them to a tutor site. She gives lots of busy work and if you wait until the last minute you wont pass.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. The class teaches each other more than the teacher does, and when grading she is super critical. She is late to give feedback or grades, so you have no clue how you're doing. All you do is keep writing essays while learning and trying to figure out what she wants. Do not take this class.
Ridiculously harsh grader. God forbid you have a quote incorrectly cited, automatic 50%. Do not take her class if you want a passing grade.
She would move around the dates things were due and she was the harshest grader I have ever encountered. I worked so hard on my papers and she gave me terrible grades for them. Also, if you miss 3 discussions, even if you have an A+ in the class, she will automatically fail you.
The due dates were constantly switched around. She didn't want to teach she passed the job onto tutors. If I emailed her for help she would tell me to ask someone else. It took her forever to grade papers and would post assignments last minute.
Professor Carlton was a very tough grader and did not offer me extra credit. She also didnt correct my mistakes she just told me my work was wrong.
Professor Carlton is nice but not a good professor. She's a tough grader and does not tell you how to correct your work, just states that it is wrong. I had a hard time keeping up and stressed out a lot over this class. Most of the time, my responses to classmates in discussions were longer than my actual essay. I don't recommend her.
Grading was harsh with minimal feedback. A lot of busy work, very little application to real life situations. Took the fun out of writing. I walked in thinking that I would view the class as a challenge, based on the reviews, but left defeated. You must already be very good at writing to succeed, because you are on your own with professor Carlton.
Worst professor by far! grades terribly hard on well deserved essays and gets angry when work isn't turned in a week before the due date. Claimed a personal essay of mine had "online sources" in it and gave me a failing grade. I turned stuff in on time every single time and still got punished because it wasn't "early". Stay away!!
Unlike any English teacher. You must work by her rules, if she doesnt like how you write this class will be a pain. Even on assignments where you are given freedom to write about a topic of your choice, if she doesnt like the topic then you will not be able to do it.
This is perhaps the most annoying professor I have ever had. Her criteria is so difficult to understand what I'm doing wrong any amount of feedback is almost unreadable, and she grades EXTREMELY harshly. Be prepared for your essays to be 80% of your grade. These essays will be graded very harshly. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
Nice lady so it bumped it up from a 1. Shes a tough grader and she just gives way toooo much work. At least one discussion every week and consists of multiple postings usually about 1000 words all together. Canvas organized sloppily. Knew itd be more work for summer A but she made it impossible to take other classes. I never leave bad reviews :(
I do not recommend this teacher. My peers taught me more in discussions than the professor. You also don't get your paper back graded until after the next one is due, so you have no idea what to work on or improve. Very harsh grader but does not provide much feedback. Discussions are nothing but busy work with ridiculous prompts and word counts.
When receiving feedback on work the advice isn't helpful. She is also very hard to get ahold of as she rarely answers emails. I have never had a teacher who hasn't been helpful or straightforward. Carlton doesn't have good communication or a caring attitude towards students.
Very writing heavy. Every week expect to write at least 5 paragraphs on difficult topics. A lot of discussions and she is very picky on word count and following exact guidelines.
Her writing assignments (discussions/essays) are very clear and specific so that students understand what they are supposed to write about. She gives helpful resources for MLA formatting, grammar, structure, etc. She has an optional essay used as extra credit;this will boost your grade a lot. She's always willing to answer any questions anyone has.
Professor Carlton is an amazing teacher for both ENC1101 and ENC1102. She has taught online for the last 15+ years, so she is very organized and knows the "online learning" environment. She gives very detailed instructions and helpful/specific feedback. She replies to emails during office hours and even outside office hours and over the weekend.
If students let her know ahead of time that they want to Zoom or have a phone call, she's more than happy to do that. Even though this class is not easy and takes work, she wants her students to succeed. She loves writing and wants her students to love the writing process too. Once you dig into the subject more, the more interesting it gets.
Confusing instructions and messy canvas layout. Multiple links for the same thing in multiple spots but only some work so you have to find the ones that do. Not helpful when asking questions. Very tough grader on essays, and they are heavily weighted. EC opportunities barely make a dent. Way too much work, her class alone feels like a full time job
My her class was very easy in my opinion. Although her approach was mostly hands off , she responded to my emails with questions promptly. Her grading in my experience was not overly critical at all, and if anything it was very lenient. I would recommend taking her class because in my opinion it was extremely easy and overall a positive experience.
The instruction is clear and her class is very organized.
Professor Carlton gives excellent feedback on every assignment we have done!
This professor is caring for all her students. Canvas is a little messy but not too difficult to figure out. Her work isn't too difficult and she encourages feedback and questions from everyone.
This is the first English class that I have enjoyed taking so far! She explains each assignment and makes sure we understand them. She is also very helpful and responds to messages and emails quickly.
Her grading system did not make sense. If you put in the effort it will be an easy A but an annoying one. She gave me a 90% of a paper so I went into her office hours to discuss what was wrong with it. She had me change 2 sentences then bumped be to 100%. Really makes me think she just gives out 90%'s.
Professor Carlton gives examples for each essay. She also lets us provide feedback for each week. All of the assignments are very well organized!
Professor Carlton takes her time to make sure each of us understands every assignment. She helps improve my writing for every essay and lets me revise essays for a higher grade.
The course is very organized and clear. This professor gives us everything we need for each essay. The readings and assignments also helped me to prepare for the essays.
I love Professor Carlton's methods, design, and assignments. She is an excellent teacher!
Do not take this class. She has no idea what she's doing. She's all over the place with what she's doing and has no clue how to work technology. Expects us to know how and what Inquizitive is and works. Never recommend this professor to anyone.
She's awesome
I really enjoyed Professor Carlton's class. My only complaint is that the canvas page could be more organized. She gives good feedback on essays and gives you a lot of opportunities to revise and re-turn in final drafts based on her comments. It's an easy class to pass. She also genuinely cares about her students and wants you to do well.
Professor Carlton was sometimes unclear with instructions, but overall she was okay. There was many easy assignments, and her essays weren't difficult to grasp as well. She strongly enforced peer reviews and gave a lot of feedback and SO MUCH TIME to write essays. She is also somewhat of a harsh grader.
Professor Carlton's class is well-organized and helpful. She provides great feedback and lets us revise essays. I found unstuck study useful for essay prep alongside the readings.
This woman is an angel on earth. The most caring and wonderful professor I've ever had. She is so understanding if you communicate with her. She gives great feedback and TRULY cares. I love professor Carlton SO MUCH!
I took Carlton ENC1101 in person. The class was fine, the teacher was fine, but I felt like attending class was a waste of time. Felt like a lot of busy work. There was tons of homework and reading that I never did and got an A. She was very kind, if you dont have a busy schedule she's a fine option, but I recommend just taking an online class.
Professor Carlton is very caring and wants her students to do well. Gives multiple make-ups and re-do's for a better grade. As long as you do your work it would be impossible not to get an A in her class.
Professor Carlton is one of the best teachers I've had! I loved her class because she made everything very straightforward and easy to follow. The assignments were clear, and she explained things in a way that made sense. ENC1101 with her was not stressful at all, and I felt like I actually learned a lot. Highly recommend her!
This teacher gives so much busy work for no reason, it will be a sentence you could answer in 4 words and she throws a 400 word requirement on the response, when shes sick she will assign you a 500 word assignment on something that could be said so easily so you basically just have to repeat yourself over and over again, old and hates technology
Caring toward students and understanding. Picky grader. Lots of essays. She gave us class time to write but we didn't get to use it sometimes because she would lecture the whole time about how to write an essay for the 4th day in a row. Gave you lots of clear outlines and resources on what to do. Not a bad professor, but feels like busywork often.
She is an amazing person! 3 big essays and papers here and there that sometimes you turn in, sometimes you don't. She is older so she explains things in detail, which I like but some other people in my class didn't.
Great professor but she drags assignments for weeks instead of moving on to the next, which became draining. Used the textbook MAYBE once (waste of money). Layout was sometimes messy & confusing but she's helpful & responds to emails. Offers extra credit, sweet & kind person but probably would not choose her again. May be better options available.
Sweet woman, but didn't like her as a professor. Will occasionally make you do writing assignments on pen (not pencil) and paper. Lectures can drag on, she restates directions a lot. Explains writing to you like you're 5. Did not learn anything in her class. But it was very easy, only three 800-word papers. Will help you if you're struggling.
