Genetics/Micro Biology Prof... she's hard as all hell.
Great teacher...clarifies hard concepts with ease.
Does not know the subject of Genetics very well. Can not answer questions due in part to the fact that she does not know the answers.

Wow, don't even know what to say. She's hard, picky and at times, not the sweetest person you'll ever meet. If you don't have to take her, don't.
one of the hardest classes i have ever taken, subject matter was very hard to follow in class but if you meet her during ofice hours she is very good about helpng you understand
She is not a bad teacher as long as you are willing to do the work. If you don't get something she is teaching go to her or go to the CLA and you will do just fine in the class. She is always willing to help.
She makes basic bio that should be an easy A like a 200 level course. She's a good teacher, enthusiastic, will clarify anything, just expects a lot. the tests are annoying.

This professor is insane. Sometimes I wonder if she even knows what she is trying to teach. She confuses the class and leads you in all different directions. Makes mistakes quite often can days later has us edit notes...STAY AWAY if possible.
She's not as bad as everyone on here is making her out to be. Her lectures are extremely easy to follow along with due to her slides. She clarifies just about everything and gives thorough review sheets for the exams. I like her a lot.
This teacher is insane. She teaches the class and then tells u the next day that she taught you something all wrong. Stay away from genetics with ehr at all possible. Take it somewhere else.
She moves at a very fast paced. She sometimes teaches you the wrong thing. Her tests are MAD hard. It consists of multiple choice, short answers, matching and essays. Absolutely horrible if you wanna pass BIO stay away from this lady
Ehhh...you could have worse, but i wouldn't reccommed her. If you have her, good luck.
nice but this class was very difficult.... tests were miserable.. i felt that this class was like a 400 level class.. good luck if u have her
She is very hard. Her tests are awful and they are basically your only grades. I would stay away from her if you can.
Hardest class i ever had to suffer through! She is one of the most unreasonable teachers i have ever dealt with! If you want a HORRIBLE semester, take this class!
This class is not meant to be difficult, but sometimes can get overwhelming with everything that needs to be known for tests. She is helpful and willing to answer any questions. The tests are hard and long, but she does give out many points, such as homeworks and lab reports to help support your average. But overall, she is not as bad as it seems.
She was awesome! Very helpful and made things easy to understand. Her tests were very hard but if you go to her before the tests she'll basically go over everything on the test with you very accurately. I highly suggest taking her!
Fantastic professor. You can't miss a class because she goes over a lot of information in one period. Never a dull moment. Very very helpful and if you need anything she will go above and beyond for you. Very dedicated to her profession. I highly recommend taking her for Bio. She knows her stuff!
Genetics is the hardest biology class offered at SHU but it's doable if you take advantage of all the help she's willing to give. I personally feel that they should split this course into two courses, genetics I and II because there's just so much to remember!
Dr. D is a very good professor. If you take this class you will really learn a lot. She is not easy. You must put in effort and time in order to do well. She always offers help and gives little extra credit assignments. By the end of this course you will really have learned a lot.
Very hard and tough teacher... holds you responable for extremely large amounts of information for tests, most of which she added herself in lecture. Paying attention in class is a MUST or else you will miss what she's talking about, she teaches on concepts from random parts of the book. Scary lady, very scary!
She is the absolute worst professor i have ever encountered. You can tell that she knows her material but she acts like we are all professional geneticist. I would avoid taking her class like you would avoid a stroke. Also she is an impossible person to work with on grading; she's very harsh and unreasonable.
I think she is an excellent professor, very clear. There is a lot of material and if you slack you will not get a good grade but that's how it should be. If people are complaining about her it's just because they didn't put fourth the effort. I would take a class with her again.
Dr. D is a very good instructor, its not an easy course to take but she does a good job teaching it. You have to put the effort in. If you use the book and highlight/post it notes and see her in her office for help/participate in class meaningfully you'll get by and learn a lot.
Goes through everything fast, but tough course with any teacher. Knows her stuff, lot of notes.
Dr. D is a good professor. She's very thorough in presenting the material and ties things together well. If you don't plan on doing the work, don't expect to get by with a decent grade. Her exams are challenging but in no way unfair. She's a great professor and I'd take her again.
As long as you pay attention during lecture and take notes you will be fine. Study for tests and do homework. She is always willing to give extra help and is approachable. I loved taking her class. She is the best.
Dr. D is an outstanding teacher, she really knows genetics. Although she goes through the material quickly she encourages office hours. If you read the book, take notes, and do the questions in the back of the book its not impossible. Go to every class. Tests are difficult and alot of work for lab! Hard Grader on labs
Dr. D is one of the best profesors! As long as you pay attention and do your work, you will do fine. She is so helpful and wants her students to succeed as long as you show her the effort.
Dr. D is a great professor. She truly cares about her students and is very helpful. She covers the material rather quickly and her tests are hard, but she gives extensive study guides that include everything she puts on the tests which is helpful. She also includes a lot of comprehension questions on the tests, so make sure you understand!
Her tests are easy as long as you take the time to understand the material. If you think you can just memorize it, good luck... Genetics was challenging yet really interesting, and I think I'll probably take her again because I like her teaching style. Again, just pay attention and actually study.
Dr. D is a nice teacher, she just goes really fast and it is really difficult to understand certain concepts. If you don't understand something, get help or you'll fail the tests! She also thinks bio is the most important thing in the world and it should be your life.
Dr. D is the best. She is clear in lecture, but is more than happy to clarify anything that does not make sense. When she teaches she also assumes you have no previous knowledge in the subject so she is very thorough in her explanations. Taking her again because she was that awesome.
easily the worst teacher ive ever had, shows no compassion, recommend never to take her class, she's no help
Dr.D is a very smart Professor. She will teach you what you need to know for the exams and is great at explaining in lecture. However, she is a hard grader when it comes to short answers on the exams. I would recommend her as a teacher if you want to learn Bio I and II.
She was unhelpful - all she did was lecture off of her slides that she posted on blackboard. She was a very harsh grader and never gave the tests back either. I would not recommend her as she was not helpful in clarifying or preparing one for a test.
Dr. D is a harsh teacher and person. She is knows her information and can clearly teach a Bio lecture. However, she is rude and the hardest grader in the Bio department, when she doesn't need to be.
She is really not a good teacher. She expects you to know more than you should, and expects you to know everything in detail. She never tells you what is on an exam, so you are always super un prepared. My enitre class was failing and she could careless. You end up teaching yourself difficult material. AVOID TAKING HER BY ALL MEANS!
Tough grader and tough tests. Not the best at explaining.
I don't know why people don't like her. She goes through the power points very slow and she explains everything to the best of her ability. The tests are tough but if you study you should do fine. I really liked her.
Dr. D really wasn't sure how to teach this class, since it was her first semester offering it. Participation was crucial in this class, especially during class discussions. She records who participates and grades based on that. The class itself doesn't really make sense and wasn't very organized, but it's survivable.
Lectures arent really helpful when trying to learn new material, doesn't really help learn information too hard - tests very hard, only way youll pass is iff you go to study groups and CLAs
SO BAD DO NOT TAKE
She is a tough grader, but she is fair. Really wants her students to do well. Mandatory to do reading and studying outside class.
Professor Deschenes was my professor for the discussion portion of biology 1. She was always willing to help, inside and outside of the classroom. If I did not understand a certain topic, I would go to her office hours and stay there until I understood it. She was good at figuring out ways to help each individual student understand the material.
Professor Deschenes is a tough grader to begin with. She does not provide us with all the information necessary to receive a high grade on the exams. Exams in this class are brutal. This class took up most of my studying time which resulted in poor grades in my other classes. This class requires extra help and tutoring. Keep on top of MasteringBio.
Prof. Deschenes is a very straightforward grader, which isn't a bad thing. What she grades for is cut and dry, so you should have no trouble knowing what she's looking for on exams. Grades pretty quickly. If you show her some respect in and out of class, she will make sure to show you some respect too. One of the best profs. in the bio department.
She makes biology more fun to learn. she uses funny references and memes to enhance her teaching, she is available for extra help whenever you need it and she is very nice
Likes using a lot of references to teach class. Wants to understand the reasoning behind answers, to better explain concepts. Very kind and gentle. some concepts are taught thoroughly other too quick, but she's always offering her office hours- so take advantage of them. Bio isn't the easiest. Beware of mastering bio, try and keep up! Good luck!
Would not recommend taking her class. She teaches all her classes like you are already a doctor in the subject. She will not scale tests and will not give extra credit. Her grading is tough and she seeks out 1 specific answer and will not take any variation. She changes the syllabus numerous times during the semester and does not keep her word.
Do not recommend. She is so strict with short answer grading. There are other professors you will get a better grade in.
I've heard very mixed things about her so I was terrified to take her course. She was one of the best professors I've ever had! She gives you different tricks to memorize certain concepts. It is important to always go to the bio reviews before a test. She tells you everything that will be on it and even gives you the specifics of what you need.
Compared to all the other Bio I teachers, she is by far the hardest. All the other teachers only teach what is on the test but she feels the need to go over the entire chapter, front to back. She keeps students the whole class time every single time and often goes over. She never finishes her lectures before the test and records them to watch after
She was the only teacher that graded discussion assignments and graded the short answers too critically. Always went over the time limit and we never had time for reviewing before the test, like the other classes did so instead she would record online lectures. Provided too much material/material that wasn't on the test. Would not take her again.
Professor Deschenes was a nice woman but her teaching style wasn't very effective. She included a lot of excessive material that we didn't need to know for the tests. She was often behind because of this, so she would have to record the rest of her lectures and post them online for us to listen to on our own time. Also usually kept the class late.
Dr. D talks to you like YOU'RE the doctor, never available for help, changes the syllabus every other week, tests are hard, long and impossible to do in the amount of time she gives you. This is the most work I have had to do for a class at my entire time at SHU which is crazy. DO! NOT! TAKE!!! Unless you want endless hw, studying and tears
Dr. D is unclear, changes syllabus, hard grader, tests are long and difficult, terrible for office hours, extreme favoritism, not a good professor for undergrads. Don't take her class
absolutely terrible prof and class. take plant bio instead lol
Over 1/2 class got below B- on test 1, and she encouraged all of them to drop out of her class with that grade. Very harsh grader. Tests based on 10+hrs of lecture, 200 textbook pgs, and secondary posted info, all "fair game". Endless work and reading, hardest class taken at SHU and was only an elective.
TERRIBLE. She grades extremely hard on tests and participation but will only call on her favorite students. She also told us at the end of the semester that we can only contact her about our grade if she made an "egregious" error "otherwise, think twice". Nice person but not a nice professor
Wort class taken at SHU. Shows huge favoritism and then knocks your participation grade when you do not talk because SHE did not call you. Tests are so hard. She made so many mistakes when making the tests and each test had to give 10+ points back when a student showed her she was wrong. Nice person terrible prof
Her teaching skills and unrealistic expectations make me consider changing my major. I have never had a worse teacher, change out of this class while you can. She could not be more unclear with what we are going to be tested on for exams and speaks to her students as if they are already doctors.
She just reads off slides the entire class. She expects everyone to be able to teach themselves before going over any material. Most people don't know what's going, and have had difficulty trying to learn with her "way of teaching" if you would even call it that. On top of all that, she didn't show up to the first 3-4 classes.
Honestly loved prof. deschenes. Her class is very lecture heavy and she reads off slides but she also goes more into depth about what we are learning especially if it's something we need to know for the exam. Her class is hard, but it's bio so it should be expected. Very nice and caring and will help you if you need it.
Lectures are so all over the place I used to miss class and sneak into the other sections to get a solid lecture. Can't get through the material in one lecture and will post like 10-20 min videos we have to watch. Just overall hard to follow and has to re-explain things like 3 times bc everyone always has so many questions. She is nice though lol
Dr. Deschenes cannot teach. She basically reads off slides the entire class and her lectures are extremely unorganized; I usually do very well in school but I have never struggled in a class like I do in this one. I DO NOT recommend you take bio w/ this professor.
you have to teach yourself everything.
She is an extremely nice person and is always available to help you both in and out of class. Sometimes she goes a bit too slow and doesn't get all of the content done in lecture before the exams, but makes great review videos to help you. She is very thorough in class, and if you put the work in and pay attention you will succeed.
Dr. Deschenes class is reasonably challenging as it is college biology, but she is a professor who wants her students to succeed and is willing to spend extra time focusing on problem areas. Of course this class is assignment and exam heavy, but proper review for quizzes and exams goes a long way. PS. don't be afraid to go to her office hours!
It is important to note that Dr. D is not a bad teacher by any means. She has so much knowledge that she is so excited to share with her students. In terms of Cell Bio she is difficult because she has a lot of expectations that can't always be met. The class is hard, she is tough, overall if you want to challenge yourself in biology this the class.
Dr. D is a very caring professor who tries her best to help you succeed. She reads off the slides but expands on the topics to help us understand. She is a slow lecturer compared to other professors, but I didn't mind. If you take notes during her lectures and attend Dr. Jereb's exam reviews, this class will be an easy pass.

Dr.D is such a bad professor. I had to teach myself everything. She was very helpful during office hours but is just not a good lecturer. She would go too slow then not have time to finish the lecture and email us topics to look up after class. Very test heavy and graded open response so harshly. so hard to do well on exams compared to woroniks.
Can barely hear when she talks in her lectures. Unclear. Very boring class. Hard to pay attention.
awful professor. so hard to understand.
terrible professor. kind of just does her own thing without having any student engagement.
the most boring professor I ever encountered. Literally, 5 students leave mid-class because of this. Cannot teach
Prof D is a very nice professor but her lectures tend to be pretty boring. She goes a little slow that makes us fall behind and not finish learning completely before the test. She's very accessible to meet with her if you need to go over anything. Definitely watch Jareb's review because that is what will make you pass the tests.
Terrible professor. Very harsh grader on everything especially exams and moves very slow in class. Would NOT recommend this professor to anyone.
Shes nice and easy, but she moves slowly, which sometimes made us behind, and you are responsible for the not covered material. Slide reader, and she can get very detailed. Attendance is taken by pollev. A lot of homework and the quizzes boost your grade if you do badly on exams
Overall she cares very much about her students and is accessible outside of class, but slide reads so much it's hard to grasp some of the more complex material since she doesn't explain it in depth. She moves so slowly that you have to scramble to teach yourself the last chapter before the exam because she doesn't get to finish/start it.
I thought Dr. D was good, she broke down the concepts well, and encouraged us to come see her if we needed any support.
although dr d's class was hard, its a college bio class and she tried her hardest to make it engaging. if you followed her instructions and made sure you understood each chapter before moving on and watched dr. jerobs review video/ did the slos, you'll do fine on exams. it's challenging but your not gonna find an easy bio
Awful. stay away! spends too much time "teaching you how to time manage" and not enough time on content. She has no clue what she's doing lowkey. Bio is such a fast paced subject and we would be sooooo far behind the other sections. take anyone else
