does not explain things well, is not helpful. very confusing and hard to follow. i had to be retaught everything she tried to teach.
Information was hard to understand in the way it was presented. Tests were very difficult and 1/3 of my class flunked the first test. I wouldn't recommend taking
Ugh, I would draw pictures in class because I was so bored. She cant teach... The material wasnt hard or dis-interesting, but she just made me hate it because she was so dull and boring.
Doesnt know how to relate info to students. talks at you and doesnt make sense. not fun.
She is one of the worst profs I have ever had. She was unable to explain anything. For example, I went to her for help on a homework problem, I was in her office for 1 1/2 hrs and i thought i was on the right track and i didnt get any credit for it.
This class presents a lot of info and Riehl does not do a good job explaining things. This class was a waste of time because you never could get her to explain things well enough to understand. Do NOT take this class!!!!
She is very un-clear about what she wants from you and never helps you with your questions. Do not take her if at all possible!
I had to put a lot of work into this class but it paid off. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. She did treat us like we were at the bottom of her priortiy list at times.
This class is difficult. She has weekly homework problems which consume a lot of time and are very difficult, but if you go to her office hours she is pretty helpful. Overall, she doesn't explain things well in class and it often requires a trip to her office hours to get explanations of material.
She is very unclear about everything. 5 students in my class of about 23 were retaking it because they failed it... with her. She said that not even she could get a ten on her homework. Everyone sat around dumbfounded. Takes long time to do homework which never seems to be right. Not helpful.
this is kind of a boring class anyway. Prof Riehl is a little unclear and doesn't seem very enthusiastic about teaching. She knows what she's doing, but that's the extent of her teaching.
Sometimes class is boring but you get to do lots of activities in class. Lots of worthless busy work outside of class in group assignments and WebCT. Tests are hard and you dont get enough time. She is funny once in a while. She grades tough and is nit picky.
Not particularly personable, a bit dull, but knows her stuff, covers it well. A little tough but fair. Kind of a lot of homework. Overall not bad.
Well...besides being unpersonable, nit picky, and a "Golden Girls" look alike, she's not too bad. It's a tough class no matter who teaches it, and she definitely knows her stuff. Not too much book homework but 2 quizzes per week on WebCT and these super hard word problem things once week suck. Hated the class, but the prof wasn't too bad. Good luc
She is very nitpicky -- you could have an answer correct on a test but it isn't word for word from the book it is wrong. Nothing is explained in class - you can just hope the book will help. Tests cram too much info into a short time, nearly impossible to get done. Homework takes forever and she isn't that helpful about it.

The class is hard. You are better off teaching yourself by using the book. First semester using webct, it sucked. She had quizes before you even went over the information in class. Best of Luck!! Her tests are hard, she does T/F that are worth 20 points, and its only 3 questions!!! KNOW EVERYTHING
This teacher is really boring, she tends to tell you the stuff you dont need to know, and doesnt tell you the things you really need to know to complete the assignment.
this class is not easy. riehl expects a lot out of you and expects you to do a LOT of studying outside of class. the tests are extremely difficult, and she is not afraid to give out a lot of bad grades. almost 80% of your grade is how you do on the tests. if you put in the time, you'll learn a lot....if not....well good luck...you'll need it.
If you need to take a calculus class and she is the only option for you, I recommend that you wait a semester before taking it. She goes over unecessary information, if you ask a question she will only go over part of it and let you figure the rest of it out and her test are EXTREMELY hard. Good luck getting a good grade with her.
I really enjoy her lessons. I always look forward to attending class, and I don't get bored or space out during class.
This class is uber hard. Take the class with someone else. What is taught in class doesn't relate to homework and homework doesn't relate to tests. Most people who haven't taken Calculus in high school have a hard time passing. Plus the class is dull and boring. I'd recommend a different professor!
Horrible. Doesn't clearly explain anything. Tests are very difficult. Most of your grade is based on tests. Expects you to do a lot of outside class work. If you didn't have calc in high school, do not take with her.
Reihl's Calc I class is fairly difficult. She sometimes doesn't explain things well, and the tests are a little bit harder than one would initially expect. However, if you study hard for tests and do well on your homework, you'll do fine. Just study!
I definitely liked my AP Calculus class in high school a LOT more! She did not explain things very well. Tests weren't too hard if you came to class and asked questions about the homework. We had daily quizzes on WebCT that were pretty dumb. If you can, try another teacher.
did not enjoy her class, didnt seem like she cared at all
The tests cover a lot of material. She is willing to curve grades and wants to make sure you know the info. DO the HOMEWORK. with out it you don't stand a chance on the tests
Even if the hw isn't collected, you have to do it to do well in this class. You have to learn to think about things differently than with other math classes, it can take awhile to "get it." Asks a lot of conceptual questions. Curves grades at the end. She is very helpful and nice if you go to office hours.
Success in this class is placed solely on your ability to read the chapters outside of class and figure it out on your own. The lectures didn't cover chapters in their entirety so you cant count on them alone. That being said a lot of test questions are from the homework and professional problems so know them and you just may pass :)
This class taught me how to use resources: I needed a study group, tutor help, and spent individual time working on the problems. The online problems are VERY beneficial to your grade. The online sample tests are VERY VERY helpful for the tests. I strongly recommend tutoring help for the Professional Problems. Don't rely on just her teachings.
Not the easiest teacher in the world, but you can also know what to expect with her. Do the homework and professional problems, ask for help if needed, and these things are what are on all the tests.
Hard Professor. Seems to not enjoy class on some days. Only reviews for one or two exams. Very critical grader. Exams cover some things class didn't.
She does not actually teach but instead expects a computer program to give you all that you need, and to ask her about it later at which time she will chuckle at your question. I believe in class teaching should come first and the computer second. I understand the concepts but I am no where close to being able to apply them. NOT WORTH PAYING FOR!
terrible teacher. expects you to teach yourself. i would avoid this teacher
Riehl is the worst professor I've had in 7 semesters at UNI. Avoid her class, she purposefully tests over concepts not covered in lecture and is generally rude. As a science major who is used to tough classes, this is the first class I've ever dropped. Do yourself a favor and take Calc I with someone else.
Just don't. Shes only helpful in office hours. You deserve much better.
Worst teacher I've ever had for Mathematics! She knows her stuff, but is way too smart to teach it. She doesn't explain her steps at all, so if you don't know how she got to a certain spot, you're on your own. She's not very helpful in class and doesn't have much of a curve. Some parts of tests don't have partial credit and require all steps shown!
Dr. Riehl is very intelligent and knows her stuff when it comes to Calculus, but does not to a good job at teaching. She uses round-about techniques that are more of a hassle than a help, and often is very confusing in her lectures. The tests are VERY hard and she grades them even harder. She does not use a curve. Don't test your luck here..
She is not a good teacher at all. She is very very smart, but teaches it horribly. If you get lost you will stay lost. Very hard class.
I took Calc in high school and did well. I thought that if I retook the class in college it would be a breeze but Riehl had a very inaccessible way of teaching this class. She is extremely smart, but she doesn't recognize that many of her students may have barely passed pre-calc. Overall I think she is just too smart to be a teacher.
Very good professor. Very helpful during office hours. Incorporated collaboration and visual learning very well. She did expect a conceptual understanding of Calculus which made tests a bit more challenging. If your are looking to understand calculus, take her class. It won't be easy, but will be worth it.
This is the worst professor I've EVER had. She is not very helpful, her tests are near impossible, and teaches the class as if you already have taken calc 2. As a science major, I am used to memorizing formulas and abstract thinking, but her tests were near impossible. She is way to smart to teach this class! Might be good for higher level class.
Terrible professor. Was lost since day 1. Really boring class. Also makes you do some programming assignments that confuse you more than help you. Don't take her if possible.
WORST professor ever! She teaches the class as if you know it well enough to teach it yourself. Very tough grader. She uses an online homework system that is filled with bugs and doesn't compensate for it. If she did, I would have a MUCH higher F. I went to class everyday and couldn't understand a thing. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER!!!!
She is very knowledgeable on calculus but DOES NOT know how to teach others calculus. The software she uses is awful! WileyPlus does not help learn calculus. I learned more from my friend's AP Calculus notes from high school and online videos I googled.
Hated her class. She knows alot, but she doesn't know how to teach. She kinda threw you in the deep end. If there is an SI session, I highly recommend attending especially before test. She tells the SI instructor some things on the exam.
I would avoid if you can. She's not very clear and the test are pretty tough.
For this course with this teacher I recommend teaching yourself the material, do all of the homework and online reading assignments outside of class, attend lecture (even if it doesn't seem worth it) and use the SI sessions as an opportunity to ask questions. Professor teaches in a round-about way which leaves you more confused than you started.
Horrible teacher. Super smart but does not know how to teach at all. She says you need to read the text and she is absolutely right because she will not cover the majority of what you need to know in class. You will go into class thinking you understand the material and homework, but she will just make it completely confusing. Avoid if possible.
You need to work hard to pass one of Dr. Riehl's class but not impossible. She does graded reading quizzes before every class which can be confusing if your not good at teaching yourself from the book She also uses wiley plus for homework so you have to type in the answers online and if you make one mistake you have to do it all over again.
Calc 1 with Riel is definitely a "weed-out" class. She makes things so unclear and confusing. She goes over simple problems in class and then makes the test questions impossible, and the class is mostly based on your test scores.
Avoid at all costs. One of our tests had a class average of 56% and she does not grade on a curve. If you don't do a problem exactly her way you will lose points. SI sessions were very helpful. There were reading quizzes for each chapter and they often had trick questions. She is not good at answering questions even in office hours.
Dr. Riehl is a very smart professor. She is very helpful in office hours, but you have to make the effort. There are reading quizzes due before every class and you should have a basic concept of how to do things before you take those, and class is more supplementary. Overall, she is very knowledgeable and will help you if you go to office hours.
Worst professor ever. For arguably the hardest subject ever. She doesn't seem to understand that teaching means the students are supposed to learn things. She also doesn't give very much if any partial credit which makes things worse.
I've never met anyone more inept at their given occupation, than Suzanne Riehl. I would've preferred if I just showed up everyday and had the textbook read aloud to me. Imagine a chimp trying to teach you how to eat a banana. Now imagine the banana teaching you how to escape the chimp. That would be a more educational experience than Riehl's class.
All you suckers out there who gotta take linear better prepare your butts. If you can, avoid suzanne. If you can't, prepare to be shredded. You will dread every second of this class and every second out of class because you will constantly be thinking about how linear algebra is porking you. With a name like linear algebra you'd think it'd be easy.
Remember when you thought vectors were cool? Well think again. Never in my life did I think lines would be so difficult. Not only that, but this professor sucks. If the math department would give me 3 credits to peel the skin off my face instead of taking linear algebra, I would gladly accept.
So here's the situation. She sucks. Here's a story of basically how this class worked. I went in to her office hours to get help on homework. I felt like I knew more than her. Not only that, but she said it was all good. Apparently it wasn't. I ended up getting a 10/24 on this assignment. If that doesn't sum up this prof, I don't know what will.
Her class was the most difficult math class I ever took. Math had been fairly easy for me my entire life. She expects you to learn the material before class but the textbook we used wasnt helpful at all.
Worst professor I've ever had!
One of the worst experiences I've ever had. I took Calc 1 with her and she never once taught me anything. She expects students to know material before class then never goes over anything during class. Never once did she teach anything, she just assumed you learned everything outside of class. Do not take classes with her.
Here's the deal. Calc 1 is a hard subject by itself and it is definitely a weed out class, but that's Calc 1 at any college . She can be kind of harsh to get used to, but when you actually put in the work for the class she is actually a very kind professor. SI sessions are a must, but thats because its a hard class. I really grew to appreciate her.
I liked her. She had a no-nonsense teaching style, and she seemed to care about answering questions. Class is not too hard if you are willing to do the work. She had a lot of in-class worksheets, which are actually useful. Again, do the work, ask questions, and you will be fine.
I feel as if I have always been great at math. I loved math up until this class. Never in my lifie have I recieved anything less than an A in a math class. That is, until this class. She threw trick questions on exams and poorly explained topics. She also gives you hours upon hours of homework every week online. I reccomend another professor.
I was told by a fellow student to never take a class from Suzanne Riehl, so I jotted it down in my notes and tucked it away. Two years later, I enrolled in her class completely forgetting about the warning. I kid you not, this is the hardest math class I have taken. It shouldn't have been, but she tended to breeze through explanations and move on.
Not a good professor at all. Gives partial credit for showing work. Focuses way too much on definitions of mathematics instead of the math itself. Doesn't do a good job with textbook. Requires textbook, doesn't incorporate textbook into lessons or studying at all. Required work off of Wileyplus, except most of questions on weren't on quizzes/tests.
Have a GRAND knowledge on your class prior to taking it. Riehl assumes that you already know the content and will quickly breeze over it. Textbook readings, class lectures, and homework are all THREE separate topics and have no correlation what so ever. She does not pick up where class was last left, everything is out of order & confusing to follow
my lord i thought the reviews on here were being dramatic. she is the worst professor ive ever had. only goes through half a problem and assumes you get the rest, textbook and lectures have nothing to do with one another, and she goes WAY too fast and doesnt explain much. i took this course as a freshman and i dreaded it everyday.
She is absolutely horrible. I didnt think she would be as bad at the reviews of her but trust me and everyone else on this page when we say DO NOT TAKE HER!!! She flat out says in the first week of class, Im not going to teach what can be read in the book like were in history class or somethingshe assumes you should already be a pro
Riehl was the worst math professor I've had. Pre calc was awful with her. What she taught in class didn't match the homework/tests. I had to have my high school math teacher tutor me through the whole course because I had no idea what I was doing. I would avoid her if you can.
Professor Riehl knows what she is talking about. Math is hard to understand in general and she is not fantastic at communicating it, but if you know how to ask the right questions, you will be just fine.
Honestly thought these reviews were exaggerating when I first signed up for her class, but they weren't. Her lectures don't match what is on the homework or on the exams/quizzes. Not to mention there were only 3 exams including the final all semester, so if you did bad on one you weren't recovering. Avoid her class if you can.
I want to give her the benefit of the doubt because college calc is really hard in general but I really didn't understand her lectures and learned way better when I just watched youtube videos about the material. It is very lecture-heavy and gets boring quickly. She seems like a nice person though and passionate about math.
I would just like to say she didn’t teach she expected us to know what to do. I would recommend If taking this class to go to another math teacher or possibly the learning center.
Her lectures during class don't make any sense and she just makes you feel stupid without helping.
If you take a class with Suzanne Riehl expect to teach yourself. She just doesn't well at all and her tests are very difficult. Please avoid Calculus with Riehl and take it with someone else. Wood is better than her. Your class grade will be entirely based on how you do on tests and exams.
If you haven't taken Calculus 1 or a Pre-Calc class before, this class will probably be challenging for you. Very little extra is credit offered. You will have to learn mostly outside of class. I found it best to read the textbook and find helpful videos before attending class because sometimes the lectures aren't the most helpful.
Never had a teacher/professor this bad before in my life. I was thinking the reviews were bad because the students were just lazy, NOPE. You will get 6 assignments a week, along with a quiz or exam in that same week. The "professor" doesnt even teach. You get put into groups everyday and she hands you a paper to solve as a group. No lectures, bad!
Was absolutely horrible, did not teach in class and was too technical in her grading criteria. Whole class with her made me want to drop out
One of the worst teachers I've had. Stopped paying attention to initial lectures and only asked questions when I knew she couldn't confuse me more. Knows the course work very well, is unable to translate that to something that can be understood by students. Learned a majority of the coursework off the textbook and homework.
Terrible professor. I have taken Calc 1 before he class, and got an A, but my credit didn't transfer. SO I retook it with her and it was the worst class ever. I was constantly failing and nothing ever made sense. Our entire class dropped her, and the rest barely passed. But she is a great person overall, if you talk to her in person.
Can't understand how she is the head of the math department. Day 1, class size:43 +/-. Week 5, class size:10. you leave much more confused, doesn't answer questions. Doesn't notify on blackboard, horrible communicator, will not provide useful feedback, her way or the highway mainly for test answer format. Class avg is 76%+/-, you need a 70 to pass.
Riehl is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire academic career. She will just speed-run through every concept with no detail then get frustrated when none of us ask questions as if she didn't just leave us in the dust. When the entire class failed multiple exams she refused to acknowledge that her lack of instruction was the cause.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Always made you more confused when you asked questions to the point where you just stop asking them. makes the learning environment hard and dry and expects at least 3 hours of work time at home, where you will inevitably teach yourself what you need to know because she does a very poor job of it. sad
Riehl barely taught, never explained herself, and expected everything to be review. She was demeaning and rude every time someone asked a question, to the point that I stopped asking and going to office hours. She literally asked, "Did you even try?" Class size went from 30 to under 10. If you don't read the textbook, good luck. I do NOT recommend.
