Her lectures are all over the place, its hard to tell what shes talking about half the time, and she doesn't answer student's questions very well. She also has a bad habit of calling everything "things." She'll call an atom a "thing" or molecules "things" or "stuff." She never uses proper vocabulary. Thats what makes her lectures hard to comprehend
Had her for honors chem I. Homework easy, lots of notes in class. Tests INSANE. Class average was probably a 30 for most, but she does allow you to make corrections for half credit on whatever is fixed.
Professor Young is literally all over the place when she is teaching. She is hard to follow, especially when she is giving an equation as an example on the board. I found it very difficult to follow her explanations. She is very vague in describing what she is explaining.
i had her for H-chem 1 ! I couldnt follow her. she is too smart for teaching students. but she give you chances to correct your test to get half of the point you lost. i learned absolutely nothing from her. i didnt know the material. i failed all of the exams but made correction so i was able to pass the class with almost no knowledge to go chem 2.
She's all of the road in this class. Had more clarification from my TA in Chem Lab who can barely speak english. She works for NASA, and definitely does not know how to break down to an understandable level.
So she is kind of everywhere when she lectures. I had to read the chapters, which everyone should do anyways, to do well on the quizzes. She gave 3 take home quizzes out of the 12, with is great. The HW, at the end of the semester, she opens up every single one if you need it. Final, she tells you exactly what to study. Hard class, but shes good.
In chem 1. Quizzes are all multiple choice and easy compared to other teacher's. Online homework is rather long but good learning tool. She's very nice and down to earth.
Very difficult class and professor. She is very nice and helpful overall, but the quizzes are very hard. She will help you with bonus points, and give an opportunity to fix wrong answers on quizzes occasionally (once each for my class). Her lectures are not very good (often are not on topic!!!), but at least she is very nice.
Easy class if you pay attention but she goes off on tangents that have nothing to do but I did well
Her honors chemistry class was fun and enjoyable. It was the first non-A I have gotten in college so far, but it is certainly possible to get an A in her class. She is a lovely teacher and I have no complaints! It wasn't super difficult, but is still the most difficult class I've taken so far (one of my favorites however).
Awesome professor. She is so sweat and kind and always cheerful. just amazing. The best grader ever. There is a lot of work to be done for the class but you learn a lot from it (that is kind of the point). She knows her stuff and if you show up to class, do the assigned essay writings, and read the book then you will pass. Just AWESOME.
What a disaster. She means well at heart and for some quizzes gives you the opportunity to retake them, but is too unorganized.
Last semester I had to withdraw from chem 1 due to having a terrible professor but Suzanne Young had very clear lecture and has designed the class so that there is a 15 min period where she can help you one on one. She gives out practice quizzes in class (used for attendance) and is always looking for a way to give her students a better grade.
She gives you the questions that will be on the quizzes and the final. She is super easy as a chemistry professor she is the define easiest one to take. You need to do workshops in the class which give you the answers to quizzes and the homework has extra credit.
Prof. Young is a wonderful human being. There is not a single mean bone in her body. Now if you are decent at chemistry, then this will be an easy A. I am really bad at chemistry but I still ended the year with a B-, and Prof. Young helped a LOT to get that B-. She doesn't mess around either, she tells you point blank what you need to know for quiz
She makes the class so easy that your own laziness will hinder your grade. Don't just look at the workshop before the quiz actually study it or you will not pass the quiz or the final. Chem 2 is hard regardless of who you have. But she just calms you.
Listen and study and pass
Suzanne Young is a fantastic human being. I would take her class again just to be around her kindness. Now for the actual class, I suck at chemistry. But she helped me out&was always happy to do so. She didn't like bullsh*t was open about what was expected on the quizzes. She was very helpful when it came for the final. She is the reason I got a B-
Hands down the best chemistry professor there is. She cares a lot for her students and really wants you to succeed. Made chemistry fun even though its particularly not my favorite subject. Her lectures are very engaging with multiple practice problems done after the lecture. Would take again if she were available for chemistry 2.
Dr. Young is the best chem professor. I did not have a strong chemistry background and she made it much less stressful. Each class she lectures and then gives you a chance to try it with a workshop worksheet. On the way out you pass it in for attendance, and walk out with the answer key. Before the weekly quizzes, she tells you what to focus on
Dr. Young is an absolute doll, but I must say she's not the best teacher. By this I mean, she sometimes dumbs her lectures down to the point where you're not really sure what she's talking about. However her lectures are very animated and she really tries to help you visualize the concepts. Youll do well if you did well in high school chem
Best &most understanding teacher ive ever had. She allows you to go to any one of her 3 classes she doesn't care when u show up, just come in theres a worksheet w/ answer key as soon as ur done you can leave for the day. Extremely helpful once done with lecture she will work with you 1 on 1 if you need help even during class. Best chem teacher 10!
She is a very nice lady but not the best teacher. There were only two tests, a huge research paper and the final (+ homework online). If you did poorly on the tests, you have a chance to make up for them in the final because she switches in the final exam grade for your test grades but her teaching style is very hard to get used to.
Dr. Young is a wonderful person, and teacher. She knows her subject very well, and her enthusiasm for chemistry shows in her lectures. It's clear that she wants every one of her students to succeed. Her lectures are very clear, and easy to understand.
Took Young for chem 1 and am currently taking her for chem 2. THIS WOMAN IS THE REASON WHY I AM EVEN PASSING CHEMISTRY. She is literally an angel on earth. Yes, she can be a little confusing sometimes during lecture but she is great explaining 1:1. I am so grateful for this woman, I am crying right now as I am writing this. She's a greek goddess.
Angel on earth. One of the sweetest people I've ever met. Makes her lectures really enjoyable and gives easy homework and classwork grades. Took her for Chem I and I'm taking her for Chem II next semester.
Suzanne Young is super sweet and funny, but she is not the best professor. She gives out workshop which is nice, but it is not always like the quizzes (which she says it is).The homework is very time consuming and 10x harder than the classwork she gives us. I received a good grade at the end of the course, but was struggling at first. STUDY STUDY!
She can be nice if you are nice from the first impression. You kinda have to do independent teaching from the notes she gives you, because she is way too smart to explain things on your beginner level of chemistry. She tries her best at teaching, but most people get lost in the middle though. She gives out notes which includes 95% of the quizzes.
she was great, enjoy her as a professor and person. if you have taken chem in high school, you will do fine in her class. there is a lot of hw but it so you learn .
really good professor
Worksheets are very similar to the quizzes, study and you will get an A.
Dr. Young is the best! I had a hard time learning from her lectures, however the workshops clear everything up. You totally work at your own pace in this course. Everything is very clearly outlined. If you put in effort, you can get an A in this class. Dr. Young provides slides on all info needed and quizzes are very representative of quizzes.
However, it's a tough class in general, if you get one multiple choice wrong, it's -10 pts out of hundred! You have to put hour(s) for the quizzes. Give a thumbs up so other ppl can read this most honest review.
Awesome teacher but , it's a tough class in general, if you get one multiple choice wrong, it's -10 pts out of hundred! You have to put hour(s) for the quizzes. Give a thumbs up so other ppl can read this most honest review.
Dr. Young is super sweet. She really cares about her students and their progress. The course is content heavy and some chapters are more dense than others so study, study, study! She is very willing to help clarify thingsnot necessarily right away in class but definitely during workshops and office hours. (Her accomplishments are inspirational!)
I was in Dr. Young's Honors Chem 1 class and it was great! There are so many opportunities for extra credit, in the forms of challenge problems and extra credit exam questions. She is always in a good mood during class and respects your time. Lectures were posted online after each day so if you miss class you can still get the material.
Dr. Young truly cares about the well-being of her students. She is super nice and will always try her best to explain the material to everyone individually. She even gives you everything you need to pass the exams, such as example questions that mirror the real test. I am enrolled in Dr. Young's section of Chemistry II next semester.
had young for honors chem I and II. best lady ever. sometimes she can be hard to understand as she gets excited about topics. 3-4 exams throughout the semester, but if you can get an A average on the first few you dont have to take the final. She loves nerds. she will give you extra credit for liking comics, movies, books, cars, literally anthing.
Dr. Young might be the best chem professor at UMass Lowell. She is incredibly clear and helpful during lectures, and is very helpful if you have any questions. She also truly cares about her students and wants the best for them, and that is something I really respect.
She's really a great professor and gives great lectures. She truly cares about Chemistry and her students. If you're taking the Honors class, you're in great hands with the extra credit and all the work she puts into the lectures. My only complaint would be the homework, which sometimes doesn't really align with her lectures 100%.
Amazing professor! One of the most caring people at UML. All of her quizzes are very direct and she tells you exactly what is on them. Watch the videos because there are always problems from them on the quiz and they help a lot! She really wants her students to succeed. Best in the Chem department.
Dr. Young is the best professor I've had at UML thus far. It is extremely evident she cares about her students and wants them to pass. She is so smart, and answers all questions very clearly. The course material for Chem 2 is difficult and she knows it, but if you do the workshops, watch her videos, and do the homework, you will succeed.
There's a homework assignment due every single week at it all takes at least 3-4 hours to do. She's not a bad professor by any means but the way she teaches isn't my cup of tea. If you prefer deadlines, having to turn in things all the time to keep you on track, then the class is for you. If you're more independent, you won't like it as much.
I had her for chem 1 and chem 2. She's probably the best chem professor at UML. She truly cares about her students and always teaches concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand. The videos she makes are super helpful and often have problems that are very similar if not exact problems on the quizzes.
I've had her for both chem 1 and 2! Honestly she's real reason why I passed both classes. She's best in the chem department so no doubt take her. She really wants you to pass and do good. She's really caring and nice and really wants you to do well in the class. Don't even think twice take her
Her quizzes come from homework problems or very similar problems so just make sure you know how to do those at the very least and you should have no problem getting a good grade.
Honors chemistry I was amazing with Professor Young! She is such a nice, relatable person. Homework is assigned after every class, but it's really not that much. Virtual class had no quizzes or tests so I can't comment on those. There was a term paper, but it was very interesting to do since you could choose your own topic. She loves her students!!
i had dr. young for honors general chemistry I and plan on taking II with her next sem! you can tell she's passionate about her job and gets very excited talking about chemistry. there's homeworks after every lecture, but she gives you 1 week to do it. in her honors section, there's no quizzes/test so can't comment on that but she's such a gem! <3
Professor Young is by far the best Chem professor at UML. I had her for chem 1 and am taking her again for chem 2. She gives so many options for every students learning styles. She is very flexible and really cares about her students. She is goofy and only gives quizzes every other week and one final exam. Pretty easy class as long as you attend.
I had Dr. Young for Chemistry 1 and 2 and was my favorite professor both semesters. Very dedicated and understanding. Loves teaching and makes learning fun. Before I took her course I was nervous about not liking it because I didn't enjoy it in high school. Its now my favorite subject. Hands down best professor I have had.
I want to start by saying I have never taken the time to review a professor, even when I have had the worst. However, I want to make a post about Dr. Young because she has by far surpassed any expectations I had based on the pretty decent reviews on here. Dr. Young is incredibly kind, inspirational, and caring. You will not regret taking her class!
During the summer, it's like a tidal wave of work after work that only grows in size. Leaving one to stress out to no end and feel as if nothing has been accomplished even getting through 30+ pages of notes. Do not take it during the summer unless you have some fetish for pain and suffering.
I had Dr. Young for Chem 1 and she was great! She goes through her slides in class, but also offers plenty of examples on the board so you understand how to do the problems. This was the first year she got approval to let her students with an A overall average and an A quiz grade to skip the final, so that was a great plus. Definitely recommend!
Dr. Young loves what she does and will continue to prove that through each and every class. Everything is accessible to you and she does not make you look for answers. I truly realized I made the right choice of choosing a chem major because of how much I enjoyed taking her class. I built my entire schedule around having her for chem 2.
Professor Young teaches a really great online chem class. Chem itself is hard but prof Young made it easier than I could have imagined. Very flexible due dates, just email beforehand. Super kind and there is lots of hw but its all helpful. She has usually has typos in her notes but you can read them pretty well. I recommend taking chem w/ her!
The best professor I have had here so far. She is very caring and understanding of her students and will put in effort to get to know everyone who cares about the class. Lots of help and resources make it extremely easy to both pass the class and not have to take the final.
I could not recommend Dr. Young enough to anyone who is taking Chemistry 1 and 2. Not only is she incredibly brilliant, she is so caring to her students. The homework (Chem 101) is NOT hard at all. If you cannot get it done she will extend the deadline for you. She is so lively and fully of energy. Take her for Chemistry!!!!!!!
I have been attending UML for years, thus I have seen a lot of types of stem professors, and Dr. Young is one of the best ones out there. She is caring, loving, and really wants you to succeed. She has many teaching styles that can be applied to any student. She will always find a way so you can understand.
Dr.Young truly values mental health, and cares the the students actually understand the content. I had her for my second semester as a first year student, and I wish I could I have taken her my first semester as well. She is a genuine person, and views us as more than just a name on a paper. She clearly values her work.
Dr. Young is one of the best professors you could get. She has inspired me so much and believes in all of her students. She clearly lays out the material and is always available to help you 1 on 1 if you need more clarity. Watch the videos she posts!!!
Prof young is a nice person and she definitely cares about her students success. I found her mini videos on blackboard to be a bit too simple and dont prepare you enough for the awful chem101s you have to do each week. These chem101s are probably the worst thing about this course. Lectures are decent and quizzes always come from the vids. okay ig
Dr Young is a very sweet professor! Shes always willing to help you out whenever you need it and she does her best to explain the material in class. Shes super excited about what she teaches which shows her passion for chemistry. Shes also into all sorts of things and hobbies Only downside would be that the chem101 are annoying, overall great prof!
Very caring and supportive professor; would recommend taking her honors class for chem 2, its a lot easier
I had Professor Young for Chemistry I and Honors Chemistry II. She is a great professor, just not exactly my type of lecturer. She knows the material like the back of her hand. She teaches with lots of energy which is phenomenal, however it can be distracting at times. The Chem101 assignments can be lengthy however there are plenty of resources.
I haven't actually had Prof. Young, however, the multiple times she's taught our Chem 1 class as a sub have been amazing. I wish her classes weren't closed by the time I checked at the beginning of the semester, as my current prof. is awful. She has delightful and easy to understand lectures that make more complicated topics less challenging.
Professor Young is an amazing professor. She's very kind to her students and wants them to succeed. She would talk about other scientists that are inspiring. She clearly cares about what she is teaching and is very knowledgeable about the topics. There's a quiz every week, but she makes it easier because 20 points are just doing a personal prompt.
Very good prof. Would definitely take again
I went into this class expecting to struggle (I've previously taken Chemistry and struggled with it), and it has exceeded my expectations. Professor Young is a wonderful teacher and lecturer, while also making lectures engaging with side stories and real life applications. She also gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit. Highly recommend!
Dr. Young is a highly respected, caring professor and she definitely loves teaching this material (Chemistry I). My biggest concern with this class was her teaching style. She has an abstract way of making her points and sometimes gets off topic, but this can be interpreted as her enthusiasm and passion for Chemistry. Do the worksheets!
If you put effort into Dr. Young's class, you're going to do fantastic. She makes it harder to fail her class than to pass it. A lot of learning is done at your own pace through videos and workshops with other students, so if you like a more hands-off collaborative approach to learning Dr. Young is perfect. Love her so much. Best professor.
I liked the way Professor Young made it possible to pass even if the content was hard, but my biggest gripe with her is the way she teaches. I pay out of state tuition to listen to chemistry not a welcome to UMass Lowell lecture. I only attended them because attendance is required. Other than that she is like any other bad chem prof.
Warning, if you've never taken chem before/are bad at chem, you might struggle a bit in her class. The only reason I was able to make it was because this course was more so a refresher for me. Watch the lecture vids & practicing is key. She is nice, extremely smart & caring, and is helpful if ya have doubts or need more time for assignments, etc.
A nice professor but much of the learning is your own responsibility as you have lots of freedom. Recitations are workshops with your group on worksheets. Very passionate about chemistry but lectures are a bit confusing sometimes. Lenient and if you request anything, just email and explain, she'll listen try her best to make your request work.
She is amazing amazing and completely understanding
give this woman her flowers! she is the best professor i have ever had. one of the kindest and understanding professors who genuinely cares about her students, and you'll leave her class feeling successful. no long boring lectures, just her videos in blackboard and workshop! quizzes are easy if you study, and she gives you lots of hints! take her!
this was honestly super easy. I think it was more difficult to get a bad grade than to get a good one. the recitation is easy and attendance is required. the lectures were the only reason that I did not enjoy this professor. she was never on topic. I could have skipped all of the lectures and still passed. her homework videos are the way to learn.
She is the worst professor I have ever had; she was extremely unprofessional/unhelpful. Assignments were constantly filled with mistakes, such as imbalanced equations or wrong answers. I constantly had to email her about mistakes to get credit back. She also was terrible at giving questions making them extremely vague. I wish I could give 0 stars.
Worst professor I have ever seen.
She has no clue what she is doing the lectures i class often rambled without reason and 90% of the information was not taught to us. She also fails to do basic things like giving a proper balanced equation of exams, or not knowing that basic things exist as solids at room temp. I wish I could rate her a 0
Extremely unorganized with lots of mistakes scattered throughout assignments. Extremely unprofessional and kind of overall just an unhelpful mess of a teacher.
I have never seen a more incompetent professor here. She gives weekly take home quizzes worth 35% of your grade but the documents are filled with mistakes. Every single lecture has been a rant of useless information. She's impossible to get a response from on email and when she does respond, it's not coherent or answering what you asked.
People like her cuz she's nice but for honors chem I don't recommend. Her modules/assessments have constant mistakes in them. Her lectures are slideshows you've already looked at because everyday before class you watch and take notes on videos she makes. she's not a great professor if you want to learn chemistry/ want a good quiz grade (35%).
The professor doesn't understand basic chemistry and when, not if, she makes a mistake on a assignment module she will double down on it and make you do chem with wrong information and makes it so you'll learn the material wrong. She wasn't at all useful in trying to understand the “mistakes” that I had. Worst Professor. Never take if you can.
She's super nice and everything you need to succeed is made available. Most of your grade is quizzes, and in-class time is mostly doing worksheets, not neccesarily lecture. She makes videos to watch for everything and it explains everything you need to know. This isn't a free class, you have to study a good amount at home & do all the worksheet/HW.
She has to be the worst professor. People love her because she gives easy A's, but she cannot teach for the life of her. The quizzes/modules are awful and she uses trick wording. She also grades so incorrectly all the time. Because she lacks teaching skills, you are constantly lost on all the labs unless you have previous chemistry experience.
If you are not a chem major and don't ACTUALLY need chem, take prof young. It is literally the easiest A you could get. She is head of the department and constantly makes exceptions for extra credit and easy quizzes because nobody can tell her otherwise. If you actually want to learn you have to do a lot on your own time.
She's a great professor however, her quizzes don't match what we learn in class. If you want to pass... you would probably want to use AI. In her class AI is welcome.
