Extremely helpful, Matrix Algebra is a tough course to teach, if you are ever confused visit her in office hours. She will help you and more. She is very patient and will take time out of her schedule to help you. Ms. Oshkai does not let you get away with "I understand" she ensures that you know and will help you get a good mark.
Extremely helpful and good at presenting the material
Don't agree with the negative comments abt her. Awesome accent, good looking, clear derivations and explanations of theorems and examples. Ridiculous midterms but fair final. Overall great prof.
Awesome accent, quite difficult material to learn, but she manages to teach it very well IMO. Pretty difficult midterms, but easier final (if you study).
Great prof. She's really tough but because of the you end up working really hard and get a lot more out of it. I feel like I learned more in that class than any other. Hated the course at the beginning but ended up really liking it once I really started studying and got the hang of it. Doesn't hurt that she's really hot.
HARDEST CLASS EVER! her office hours were helpful but thats about it
I found this class really hard! She wasn't very clear at all and her midterms are way harder than any other prof!
easy to listen to, great explainations, helpful and respectful, very approachable, good laughs in the class as well
Probably the best teacher in the math department. Consider yourself lucky if you get her. Anyone who doesn't understand what she is talking about is a retard, and shouldn't be talking the class in the first place. There is a lot of help for this course as well, no reason for not getting a good mark.
Oshkai may have an accent, but it just makes you wanna listen to her more. *wink* The way she structures her class is amazing, she just knows exactly what people have trouble with. Although it is still Calculus, so its still pretty hard.
Very talented teacher, informative lectures and gives very good examples instead of notey notes. Her midterms are hard but they will benefit you as she writes a majority of all finals. Her accent is a little hard to understand but she explains concepts well.
Very erratic teacher, hit and miss (depending on her mood, you will know whether she will deliver a good lecture or a terrible one) Often babbles(says) jumbled-up English+Russian when upset or tired. Ignores your in-class questions , and makes diabolically hard finals.
She may seem intimidating and her tests most certainly are but she really wants you to do well and she will clarify concepts and makes sure you understand. She is a great prof and really knows her stuff. Absolutely have her for a math prof!!
Classes fly by with Svetlana. Every day, I would look at the clock only to find that the classes was about to end when I thought we were less than half way through. She is an amazing prof that explains everything extremely well.
The first time you have her, you won't like her until around the end of the class, when you realize she is extremely good at teaching. She's just hard to get used to. The second class I had with her, I would have failed if it wasn't for her extremely detailed notes and really REALLY helpful examples. Choose her over all others, you won't regret it.
Took math 100 with her. Wasn't too sure in the beginning, failed the first two assignments and barely passed both midterms. But because of meticulous explanations and frequent requests for feedback on her part I rocked the final and finished with an A-. Highly recommend for those new to calc.
I wish I had taken Math 100 with her as well. She explains things quite well, if you can understand her accent. Her midterms are hard, but they really prepare you for the final, and thanks to the math dep't scaling policy her midterms will probably raise your final mark. She's also easy on the eyes...
This is one of the best math profs I have ever had. Everything is explained extremely well. Her derivations introduce new, and very useful techniques. I would move my timetable around to be in her class. AMAZING!
So hot. And Helpful.
She was a very good teacher her midterms are hard so use the practice questions that she outlines in the course outline. Try and sit in the front so she doesn't call on you to answer any questions. Also be quiet in her class or she'll call you out and make you look like a fool in front of every. Overall the best teacher i've had so far.
Best math teacher I have ever had. She is tough, but she gets you through it. If you put in the effort, it is worth it. I moved my schedule around to get in her class for 101. HIGHLY recommend!
Great prof. Has a Russian accent which is difficult to understand at first, but once you get it your golden. Likable, makes you laugh now and then (gave a mini Russian lesson every math 110 course... Which we laughed at). Very helpful in lectures, very audience based (when doing an example shell call on the audience for every step). Office hrs gr8.
hard work but funny jokes and well worth getting for any math class. sometimes you have to ask her to repeat because she switches into russian by accident
I found her very hard to understand.
Great Prof, so far I had her for 100, and 110, and currently having 101 with her!!
really good teacher!
Oshkai is a babe
She is overrated because she is funny and motivating. She is, in my opinion, not a good teacher. Her explanations are confusing and her writing is unorganized.
Avoid her if you can.
She makes great notes and is happy to help you. plus it makes it easier to learn and pay attention when your prof is eye candy :P
Svetlana is a great calculus prof and excellent motivator. I went to every single one of her classes and each helped me understand the material better, and let me know what I needed to focus on in my own time. She's the best math prof at uvic so get her if you can! Math is no easy feat so the marking and tests are hard. As a bonus she's funny too!
Good teacher, brutal tests. Make sure the textbook you use becomes your bible, because you're going to need to practise a lot to be successful in this course. Classes with her fly by very quickly.
Has a lot to offer students that are willing to put in the effort. Svetlana has pretty high expectations, but her tests are very fair and representative of what should be expected of students.
difficult exams. a bit biased. sometimes difficult to understand. spent 30 minutes in the last class on talking about how to 'study' for the final exam, which was totally useless. people find her motivating though, and she's really helpful at times.
I loved her class I wish she taught my other math classes too. Her explanations are really easy to follow.
Should have taken the course with A. Wise.
If you can get used to the Russian accent she's amazing. Her notes are easy to follow and she's so helpful if you approach her after class. Her midterms are hard but its helpful because it prepares you for the final. Highly recommend math 100 and 101 with her!
Horrible prof. Very difficult to understand, and often does not explain what she is doing.
She is willing to help you after class and outside of class. Her teaching is absolutely great and her sense of humor makes class fun. If you sit near the front and put full effort into the class in and outside of school, you will do well.
A smoking cougar. A bit on the tough side in terms of work, but it helps with the exams. Has a tough sense of humour. I liked her
Arrogant, not helpful, bad at teaching.
Cannot understand her very well and her teaching is terrible. Very few people with no prior calculus experiance can actually understand what she's teaching/writing on the blackboard
Excellent teacher. I have had a number of math teachers at UVic and she is by far my favorite. Read the textbook, and let her help you, you'll do fine.
Great prof with an awesome sense of humour. knows her stuff and gives useful examples and tries to engage class. never thought i'd say this, but i actually look forward to attending her lectures. love her mavi jeans too.
She is amazing, very interesting and clear. Her notes are easy to understand and her class is actually fun, I started to look forward to math after a few classes with her. I have now had both math 100 and 101 with her. She is my favorite prof at uvic!
Worst prof ever. Impossible to understand. If no one answers the questions in class she moves on. Expects you to know everything prior to lecture. Really doesn't teach you anything. Learnt everything from the textbook.
Excellent professor with a great sense of humor. All the haters need to remember they are not in high school anymore. Exams are difficult but fair. If you put in the work you will do well in her class.
Show up to class and you'll be fine.
Great Prof. Had her for both math 100 and 101. Lectures are interesting and she works through lots of examples. plus she gives you time to work out in-class examples. I actually look forward to this class. Willing to help you if u see her during her office hours. However, at first, it was hard to get over her accent but you get use to it.
Worst instructor I've had in university
A GREAT prof! I had her for 100 and 101 and I am trying to get in with her for stat next year. If you didn't like her, you just didn't work hard enough. She is tough, but overall and amazing prof. Super funny and caring in office hours.
Great examples and clarity. Very intelligent and always engaging the class. Midterms and finals are fair.
Excellent teacher, great examples and clear instructions. Very helpful in office hours. From others opinions it is a love/hate her thing, but if you work hard and don't get behind her class is great. Highly recommend, but don't expect to get through Math 101 without working hard.
I didn't like her class at first, but after 2 or 3 weeks I really liked her teaching methods and how she tried to get everybody in class involved. Now looking forward to having my 101 with her in spring... p.s. I like her accent; especially the way her GOOD MORNINGS sound... like good moanin...
Svetlana is great! Her accent isn't even slightly distracting and I really enjoyed how much she seemed to care about her students. Her exams were definitely more difficult than previous years, but still fair. Plus, her humour definitely adds to the class!
Very nice and caring teacher. If a student has a question in the lecture, she'll go into it in detail. The midterms and final were pretty hard though
She is very helpful and seems to genuinely care that the students so well. Unfortunately, her midterms were hard and her final exam was terrible. If she is MA 100 course coordinator, STUDY UP.
even if I didn't pass the class I would still recommend taking math with her. she is a really good prof and a lot of students from other lectures even sit in on her lectures. Her accent is not hard to understand at all and she's got a great sense of humor! she also is extremely helpful if you do go to her with a question.
Wonderful teacher. I didn't find the exams difficult at all.
She is simply the best, always go to class. Gives you everything you need to ace the tests and give great motivational speechs.
Loved her! After midterms she would often spend up to 30 mins of the lecture discussing statistics: giving us the avg, mean, how we compared to the prev batch etc. Which teacher does that? Also always arranged for us to see our final exams to make sure we were satisfied with our mark. If youre expecting calc to be easy, you will be disappointed.
Excellent prof! Meet her during her office hours. She is ALWAYS ready to help. Office hours were so productive. Lectures were pure awesome
Yeeeee yeye yeeee
deliiiicious
Definitely a great prof!!!Take her lecture for a whole year, and got A+ in the final. Use typical examples to explain the concept and give us useful summary sheets. Read the textbook for more detail. The Assignments are hard , but motivates us to think. She is very approachable and willing to help, don't be afraid to ask questions!
Clearly explained things and tried really hard to get the class involved. Very friendly and approachable after class. Very helpful in explaining extra questions. Definitely go to lectures, even if you took calculus before, new material will be covered. Really enjoyed this class with and hope to have her again!
horrible examples, can nearly understand her accent. goes through lessons way too fast. i didn't learn anything- horrible teacher
Oshkai is mother Russia. She has the most Russian accent ever. It's amazing. I didn't have trouble understanding her, but if you don't like people with accents, you won't like her. She's hilarious in her own way, and incredibly helpful when you ask her questions. A sincere feeling from her that she truly wants you to learn and succeed in her class.
Unlike other profs, Oshkai's lectures help significantly for the midterms and final.
She is always prepared for class and knows what she is talking about but sometimes would jump around in the notes and would be hard to follow. Also not the class to mess around in, pay attention and try the questions she tells you too.
All over the place, the class wasn't necessarily difficult but if I had to do it again I'd go with a different teacher
Careful about taking classes with her. Exam averages were lower than other sections due to a lack of communication on what to expect. Also presents an ethical dilemma where she tore into a bunch of students for copying assignments before stating she wouldn't take any action. Terrible.
I found her lectures very useful. She goes through the material rather fast, sometimes assuming everyone knows certain conceptstechniques, but I found that she explained most of the steps she took in solving each problem.
Clear and interesting lectures
A very helpful professor. In my opinion, the best of the Math 100 and Math 101 professors.
Total girl crush on this amazing woman. She is super sweet, funny and intelligent. Has an accent but you can understand every word she says. Make sure to take her class if you want a reliable, and VERY helpful prof.
Great prof - has an accent but is still very clear with what she is trying to say. A tough first year course, but she does a very good job preparing the students, as long as they are willing to pay attention and work.
She's an amazing math professor who explains things super clear and is super helpful when it comes to office hours. She is also very entertaining, I didn't mind her accent at all. Definitely would take any class with her again.
I think her tests are not so difficult. The difficult thing is that the figures she gives us are big and difficult to calculate. She teaches very clearly also she has a little different way of pronunciation.
I love her She's amazing
Great lecturer, clear in her notes, and accent isn't a problem at all. Funny and genuine person and quite enthusiastic. This time around the tests are hard, and the time given to do them is very little. I 100% recommend her, but study hard and do the homework.
The average of her midterm was failed. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! She won't go over the details of concepts; only challenge examples in the lecture!
She told me in the office hour that "you have to study on your own; I dont want to waste time to teach. I only want to give you as many examples as I can in the lectures." AVOID HER CLASSES PLEASE!
I think students should do a lot of practice, so you will find that the exams aren't that tough at all. Overall, a wonderful class for you to attend although sometimes she is not so helpful in her office hours.
A wonderful class!
Her tests are too too too too too tough and the time per each exam is only 45 minutes, definitely not enough.
Svetlana Oshakai, math coordinator, her tests are a little hard I went to her office hours and told me all of her question are strictly from the textbook maybe from you tutorial, she's from Soviet Russia where the education system was harder but right now I do an hour or two math every day and I'm doing alright, she is 0%BS 100%Russian
Great teacher. Don't talk during lectures she'll call you out and embarass you
awesome lectures, difficult midterms, have to study a lot to do well
Her every lecture is amazing and you can learn a lot during the class. Her exams were fair, but her marking on the exam is awful and tough. The average of three midterms is just nearly close to 50%. Overall, if you want to learn mathematical knowledge, choose her. Otherwise, If you want to earn very high marks, I highly recommend you to avoid her.
Compared to any math prof I have had, her lectures are clear and helpful. She manages to explain concepts without just writing theorem after theorem down. The courses she teaches are not easy, so you will not do well if you do not put in work. Be sure to utilize the study plan in MML.
svetlana really cared for her students and worked hard in trying to teach really tough material
MATH 110 is a really difficult class, but Svetlana is the best prof you can have for it. She really cares about the students, and is there to help you through tough material. Students would often see her immediately after lecture and she would answer questions really clearly. The final was difficult but fair, and I under-prepared (my fault).
Her midterms were difficult because of the 45-minute time limits and hard knowledge. However, the final exam were extremely similar to the questions in the midterm. I highly recommend you to practice the questions on the textbook, especially Chapter 11 because it is an important part and not in the midterms.
Fantastic teacher
Best math teacher I have met in UVIC. Math 101 isn't very easy but she exactly told me how to be successful in this course. Please do the final exam very carefully and your grade would be fine.
Awesome prof, awesome accent.
From Russia With Love. This Eurasian bombshell of a Victoria professor is everything you can ask for from a mathematician. With derivatives, integrals, and a touch of sexy, taking her class will leave your brain bolstered and your knees weak.
Not really sure what all the hype is about. Pretty typical prof.
Best professor I have had
Math 101 is a hard class no matter who you take it with, but Svetlana has been teaching the course for years so she's by far the most competent of all the Math 101 profs. She's knows her stuff and truly does want you to do well. I highly recommend doing as many textbook questions as you can in this course, since she bases her tests on the book.
She was a good prof, and always very friendly and willing to take questions. Sometimes lectures were confusing, but more because of the material than her teaching. She did her best to help make a difficult course better.
Do ALL the recommended textbook questions right from the beginning, not just while studying for the final. And read the textbook and work through the examples because that's where she gets exam questions from. A fair, clear, helpful and sometimes funny prof who cares about students' success. Definitely recommend doing math 101 with her.
Svetlana is an amazing math prof. She's kind of like a math mom, honestly - always makes us say "good afternoon" at the start of class. It's a really hard class, but her explanations are so clear & she's very organized. She always gives good feedback after midterms & tries to improve class scores. Even better than Butterfield!
Svetlana is an amazing prof. I had her for MATH110 in my first semester of first year and switched around my entire schedule in second semester in order to have her as a MATH101 prof in the spring. She has a slight accent but is still pretty easy to understand. She also does a lot of in class examples which I found helps a lot.
Svetlana is a beautiful human. I wish I could have her as my prof for all my classes. There's no words to describe her
Excellent instructor, favourite math prof by far. Very caring if you talk to her 1-on-1, and definitely lets you know exactly what's expected of you right off the bat. Midterms are fair! Just do all the assigned homework. Also, she draws the best diagrams which really helped me understand the concepts better.
One of the best profs I have had. Explains concepts in class extremely well. Asks students for input and what they would like to focus on. Office hours very fair and helpful. And shes just a sweet human being in general :) Math 101 was difficult but she is super helpful with explaining if you go seek the help you need. Plus notes very clear to read
Svetlana is the most caring professor I've had. You will learn so much in this course under her tough Russian love. Wouldn't take the course with anyone else but Svetlana.
SOVIET SVETLANA 10/10 WOULD TAKE AGAIN :)
Soooo kind. Is very empathetic towards students and at the same time actually teaches you math. It is NOT an easy course, but she makes it bearable.
Oshkai is one of the best profs I have had so far. She does many examples in class and is incredibly caring about how everyone is doing. She's very open to questions and answers them very clearly. Her russian accent was somewhat hard to understand at first but after a few lectures it was fine. She is a super happy prof and I enjoyed going to class.
I've never learned more in lectures. She is extremely clear and competent.
Svetlana explains hard concepts very clearly. She likes giving "trick" questions during exams, so be prepared to really put your mind to understanding the material, and not just memorizing how a problem should be solved. But even if you pass with a low grade in her class, you will have great knowledge of 101 material (if you attend the lectures).
She is a very caring teacher who is willing to communicate and adjust her methods for the benefit of the students. Her tests are tough. Two of the three midterms I had had below 50% average but it could just be the material being hard. If you're a top student, you will love her guaranteed.
Best prof at UVic I've ever had. She teaches a hard course but she also provides you with the material and advice on how to succeed, just show up for class. She's super caring for her students. Her lectures are fun (for math) and her accent is amazing.
Svetlana is a great instructor. Her lectures are wonderfully detailed. The best way to succeed in her course is to finish the suggested questions right after learning the material in class. Aswell her course is designed for you to learn out of the textbook before a lecture. So don't expect to be an expert after a class. Tests are tough tough tough
The best Prof I have ever met. Oshkai is a awesome prof who is always ready to help you. If you have to take 101/100, I will definitely recommend her. The lecture is interesting and useful. The notes are really important. The tests are not that hard, but you do need to go through everything and do some practice. Love Oshkai sooooooo much!
Svet is my gal. She seems like on of those professors that became a professor to teach and not do research. It's amazing how much control she has over a lecture hall of 250 people and keeps all of them engaged. Explains the material in a great way and her pace is perfect. 11/10 best prof so far.
She made me want to attend the lectures. I'm not a math person, but I actually enjoyed calculus. One of the best instructors I've ever had, and I'm disappointed that I could not take her Math101 class.
Only class I attended every lecture for just because of how great she was.
Svetlana is hands down the best math teacher/professor I've ever had! She's great at explaining the "why" behind concepts before delving into them, which is crucial for a subject like calc. You can ask her the dumbest questions in the world and she won't judge you. Funny, genuinely caring, well spoken professor. Can't recommend enough! :)
Im not sure why Prof oshkai has such good reviewed, I am a hard worker student with very good grades however this iss the worst class I have ever take, the Prof acts like she cares on your effrots but will screw you over on purpose. Honestly this class made my life a living hell and i would NEVER take this class or any class taught my Prof
Honestly one of the best profs I've had, in any subject, ever. I hate math, yet this class was actually one of my favourites. Going from her 100 class to someone else's 101 class was such a shocker, and if I could have switched into her section, I would have.
She teaches well in lecture; however, midterms are not like the practice given. Will make you feel bad about yourself if you didn't do well.
Svetlana is an amazing person and is greatly respected by her students. However, she may rush through certain important and/or difficult topics and spend days on topics that are easy to understand for those who have taken calculus before. Get ready to feel bad about yourself on midterm #2 or #3, there's always one that will get ya down.
Love her. Not a difficult course if you've taken calculus 12. I really enjoyed her lectures and low key look forward to going to her classes actually. She's also very kind and caring, the kind of teacher who actually cares and want you to do well, though in Svetlana's class, you need to absolutely do the work. Not an easy A but you'll learn a lot!!
Took Calc in high school & this was by far the hardest class I've taken in first-year sciences. Switched my major to avoid 101 as she ruined math for me. Her tests are constructed to determine the A+ students; so study the hardest textbook questions you can. I respect her as a person, but her tests do not reflect the difficulty gone over in class.
Accompanied by her amazing personality, Svetlana delivers well-explained and thorough lectures that made MATH100 the easiest course I've taken to date.
Svetlanas notes are some of the best I've seen, straightforward and easy to follow. She does a great job of explaining concepts without overcomplicating them. There are a few projects in this class and their instructions are a little difficult to follow, so they can kind of chip at your grade. The midterms ranged from a breeze to.. not a breeze.
Svetlana is an engaging and overall solid prof. She made calculus not terrible and her lecture notes were fantastic. Would 100% recommend.
absolute gem! i adore her
Very awesome, amazing, and engaging prof. Every lecture was entertaining, despite the difficulty of the course. She would always be available for extra help and support with any issues.
Svetlana gives some of the best lectures on Math that I've ever had. Be careful though, she can go through some material fast, especially if nobody speaks up, so do!
I would never take a class with her again. She teaches stuff that we never needed to know and then skips stuff that we need to know for finals and midterms. As well, she sent out our second midterm the night before it was to happen and then gave us a much harder midterm the next day and basically blamed the students. She never owned up to anything.
Probably the most engaging math lectures you're gonna get.
Teaches things that seem so straight forward and easy in class, and then gives us midterms and finals that are much more difficult and don't really match what we do in lectures. Wouldnt want her as a prof ever again
Sometimes hard to understand in class and not super engaging to listen to, though clearly passionate. Also she somehow managed to accidentally email the entire midterm to the class the night before then rewrite a significantly harder one to replace it.
Probably one of the best math instructors I've had so far.
I'm currently taking Math 101 with Svetlana . She has a great personality and is more than enthusiastic when she teaches, but after taking the second midterm today, it's clear that what is taught in class and what is tested are not equivalent. Personally, I make a habit of going over the online homework until my hair turns white, but it doesn'help
A dependable and warm character. Clearly dedicated to her profession as a university teacher. Maturely handles class progression and classroom events. Inspired and helped me a lot in calculus II learning (side material is Paul's online notes). I doubt that I will meet many math teachers as good as her in the future.
Svetlana is an amazing prof. 101 is hard in general but her lectures are super clear and helpful. Students in the other prof's lectures would come to ours just for her. She's very caring but fair. Failed the first midterm, considered dropping, talked to her and she helped me map a plan to succeed, no bs about how hard it would be but it was doable
Seems like an ok person, but handled COVID-19 terribly. Made us go to class with 200+ people. Made the second midterm only out of 10 online and refused to give partial marks for incorrect answers. Gave us the outline for the midterm late at night the day before. From what I'm hearing from classmates, it will be a wonder if 10% of the class passes.
Svetlana is the most frustrating prof ever. She doesnt care about her students at all. It is 2 days before the final and we still don't have our second midterm marks back, so we dont know how online exams are graded. This among other things. While normally she might be considered strict, the coronavirus she has shown how little she actually cares.
Less than 40 hours before the final and we do not have our midterm marks back. We also do not have enough info on the final. What time is it at? I'm honestly appalled by the level of incompetence she's showing during the coronavirus. No one in the class knows what's going on. We're all expecting our grades to be RNG'd at this point.
Svetlana is one of the most incompetent professors I've had the displeasure of meeting. There is a clear lack of communication between the students and her. No info on how tests will function untill its pretty much too late. Marking a tests takes forever. Returning from the final i now must believe that she has gone senile her class is ridiculous.
Every time I think Svetlana can't make me hate her more she gives me a reason to. We don't have our midterm marks 24 hours before the final. We don't even have a clear idea of what the final will look like. She is the most incompetent, disorganized, and unfair professor I have ever had a class with.
If Svetlana can't get our midterm marks back or get information about the final to us at a reasonable time, maybe she shouldn't have assigned all that extra work once classes switched to online. The worst handling of COVID 19 ever.
Svetlana has demonstrated an utter lack of adaptability when faced with the Covid-19 situation. Some examples: - extended gateway quiz deadline 30 mins before it ends (only to procrastinator's benefit) - over 3.5 weeks (1 day before final) and still no grades for midterm 2 - less than 24 hours to the final and zero information on the content.
Possibly the worst handling of the COVID-19 situation I've ever seen. Examples: extending the time for Gateway 3 by an entire day 30 minutes before it was supposed to be completed, still not getting midterm 2 marks back to us after 4 weeks, and still not providing information about the final less than 24 hours beforehand.
I am writing this while the online final is being held? Why? Oh, because the long answers just didn't show up. Thanks Svetlana.
She was a good prof until the final.... That final was the most horrendously put together exam I have ever written. It was so badly botched that almost 90% of students had not enough time to answer the questions, Not enough answer spaces were provided to answer the provided questions.
So, for the final, we had plenty of review material. So everything from past midterms, gateway tests tutorials. Plenty of review material. The structure of all the previous midterms and gateway tests are very familiar and questions we've all seen. Yeah, the final did not utilize those questions at all.
Terrible final. Not nearly enough time given, and on top of that a portion was available about 3 min late and was only open for 15 min in the first place. I can't express enough how disorganized and unfair this was. Not one person ive talked to had enough time. There isn't one thing she has done correctly since switch to online. Not a single one.
The online Test was bull half the stuff we didn't learn and the other half we didn't have time to do.
keep your sanity. don't take it.
Her exams are one of the hardest I have ever encountered. It is practically impossible to finish the final in the given time limit.
Her exams are one of the hardest I have ever encountered. It is practically impossible to finish the final in the given time limit. She is not a bad teacher though!
Ridiculous tests.
She is a tough but fair prof when it comes to lectures, homework and weekly quizzes. She sets up the course with tools for success and makes it clear that you have to work hard to do well on exams. In a normal semester, she is an ok to good prof but she completely dropped the ball with the corona situation and destroyed kids with the final :(
Imagine the worst way possible someone could handle a online course, then toss it in the trash. Because thats what I feel after this exam. Otherwise, she is a great prof (In person) caring but really harsh.
Good lecturer, but unfortunately has zero sympathy or respect for her students. She commonly replies to "dumb questions" with a mildly condescending tone of voice which clearly makes a given student feel stupid. additionally, she will gladly murder her classes with executively difficult exams. I would highly recommend not taking her course.
While prob just strict normally, online classes have rly showcased how little this prof rly cares about students. Making a final impossible to finish in the allotted time just because you don't want people to cheat is ridiculous. I have yet to hear that one person answered all the qs, mostly that everyone thinks they failed. Don't take her class.
She did not handle the transition to online classes appropriately
She was a good prof during when we still had face to face classes. People need to chill tho. Final Exam was difficult and was hard to do in the given time but not impossible if you put in the necessary effort. Not all, but a lot of these people are capping with their complaints and excuses.
Worst professor ever
She completely messed up the final exam. We had to take it online because of COVID 19 and she decided that the test would be super short giving us about 5 minutes per question while each question normally takes 15 minutes. She also made us submit our written work in probably the most unnecessary ways possible.
Normally, I found her an awesome prof. Learned a lot from her lectures and felt like she wanted us to do well and be happy. That feeling did not transfer onto exams. I'd say the final was the hardest thing I've done, but that would imply that it was possible to do, which it wasn't. I was disappointed in how this transition was handled.
Final exam was a train wreck. Unprepared, disorganized, and disastrous . Not a damn clue what was going on. She basically punished her students for Covid- 19. To think she's been running this course for years is baffling.
As many others have stated on here, she was an amazing professor prior to the COVID-19 situation. Once everything went online, it all went downhill. I realize this is a difficult time for everyone but that is no excuse for the way this course was handled. I'm crying as I'm writing this. All my hardwork down the drain. Waste of time and money.
Absolutely vicious professor, she will put the hardest possible questions on the test and her class average is incredibly low. She has been demoted from teaching math 100 to math 109 because of it. Its a bummer because these math classes are mandatory for a lot of people and she will tank your GPA. Find another way to take calc if you can
Unfortunately a lot of these reviews are from people that didn't do well on the online final due to COVID this year. Svetlana is one of the best math professors out there. She makes her expectations clear and explains concepts amazingly well. Yes, math 101 is a hard course, but these reviews don't reflect Svetlana as a professor.
I was able to get a good grade in this class but with no help from this prof. Basically taught myself the entire course as her notes just consisted of examples using techniques that she hadn't even taught us. On top of her disorganized style of teaching, the way she handled covid was terrible. Seems like a nice person, but unfortunately a bad prof.
I had Svetlana during my first two semesters in university. I'm not a whiz at math, in fact I used to hate it. Svetlana genuinely cares about her students. She starts every lecture by asking how her students are doing. Her testing methods didn't go well online during COVID but otherwise, she always held office hours to support her students.
Good lectures but spends too much time on easier concepts so has to rush through harder ones. This wouldn't be an issue but she tests the harder concepts. Half marks are non-existent on midterms & finals. Completely dropped the ball when transitioning online. she's only helpful if you understand the topic well.
She is easily the worst prof I have ever had. So strict on grading that she will make it impossible to pass if you so much a hesitate on a question before attempting to answer it. I had her during the COVID-19 pandemic and she made it impossible for anyone to pass the final exam.
Svetlana is a friendly, caring professor. She is very tough on midterms but does a fairly good job preparing you for them in lecture. She mainly does a quick 10-15min lesson, followed by sample problems till the end of class. As long as you do the examples from the perspective of learning the underlying principles of the math, you'll do fine.
Makes her exams extremely difficult, I had her during the Covid-19 pandemic and the final exam was near impossible to pass. She emailed us saying she purposely made it harder, even though we had to teach ourselves online. She also took near a month to mark the exam and midterms. Definitely would never recommend her for anyone.. terrible, terrible!
She had good clear lectures, 1st midterm was easy if you kept up with the homework (which is a lot), quizzes etc. When COVID happened it turned into bloody nightmare. I had 95% on the first midterm and barely passed the final. She made the final impossible to answer by putting insane time limits. Ruined my course and GPA. Stay far away during COVID
I did well in this class, and in the beginning I did like the class. But she made the tests so much more intense than they needed to be, the math was doable but the conditions like time and format made them so much worse. I think she cared more about cheating than if we understood. during covid she screwed us all and made it impossible to finish.
She was horrible!
I'm sure she's a nice person, but she's the most unreasonable teacher I've ever met. I appreciate teachers with high standards, but her expectations are just totally unrealistic. She put sections we haven't even learned yet onto the tests.
Online I don't understand how she can be considered a professor. She does not lecture and posts youtube videos to try help students learn concepts. It is absolutely ridiculous that I am paying full tuition to be taught by youtube videos and be told by a more than useless teacher that this is 'how it has been'.
The online term has been horrible. I haven't even met her once. The reason why is because she doesn't even teach. All she does is post links to the textbook (which is so confusing) and post links to youtube videos like Khan Academy. We're literally paying full tuition just to teach ourselves with Youtube. Really??
If you enjoy paying to be told to read the textbook and watch the compiled youtube playlist, Svetlana is for you. I'm sure she may be better in an in-person environment, but she is an awful online instructor, and replies to student concerns about the course with defensive "instructor is always right" emails.
Just horrible.
Terrible professor, they seem to just be here for the pay and didn't support students in their learning. We taught ourselves with her youtube playlist she made the whole year. Math 109 and 101 have open book exams, while she's forcing us to use lockdown browser, no part marks, no going back to previous questions.
I only give it such a difficulty rating because I have to teach myself the whole curriculum. She might be different in person but could not recommend her online, you are paying for access to tutorials and thats it.
She honestly didnt teach anything herself this semester. I ended up learning and understanding majority of coursework on my own. Wasnt understanding either. Never replies to emails so dont bother sending any
Well ....... Congratulations. I just payed for a YouTube playlist, access to MLM and another prof who just confuses the entire class. Legit, what am I paying for? The answer ...... nothing. Svetlana doesn't teach the course, she doesn't mark the course and she doesn't care about students concerns. Thx
We had to learn EVERYTHING off of youtube... nothing was taught right. We all paid so much to be taught off a free platform and we didn't even get youtube premium :(
Prof? What prof? All we got was a youtube playlist lmao. Don't take her online course, it's absolute bs. The final is also ridiculously unreasonable.
Contrary to most peoples opinion I found her to be very caring, she has a lot of students to take care of but she always answered my emails. This course was taught as if you have already taken calculus, which is why the course is here. The stuff taught in this course should have been similar to what you were taught in high school.
She gave us a playlist of youtube videos to teach ourselves the course. No actual lectures. She also has a lot of due dates for various assignments and quizzes. She did some weekly tutorial sessions, although they are so slow and disorganized that they won't be worth the time for most (and it doesn't help that her English isn't too great).
She posts a youtube video playlist that she didn't even make and expects you to learn all the material herself. She can barely speak English and her teaching is useless (when she tries which is almost never). The fact she has a job is honestly quite sad.
She is an horrible prof who teaches by posting YouTube videos. She got offended when someone asked her how many questions are on the final and ended up not answering. The class was a joke.
Don't take her courses. Svetlana was actually kind and she seems like a good person but HATED her course. She never answers emails, was the only teacher that used lockdown browser and zoom call with cam and mic on for tests. She literally didn't teach us anything we had to do it ourselves. Not a hard course but so many tech issues and overall bad.
everything essentially self taught making course load 2-3x more. The midterm and final were nothing like the MLM questions and if you didn't pass, u don't pass the course. Said she cared about how we are doing but actions said otherwise, didn't accommodate to small changes that wouldn't affect her or others, in order to just pass the course
I hear Svetlana is a good teacher in person, but online she designed this course poorly. Most of the material was delivered via textbook and youtube. I found it was possible to do well if you had the time to teach yourself and practice a ton. People are saying that she doesn't speak english which I disagree with. She's just stubborn and bad online
My biggest regret this semester was not researching this prof beforehand. There was no substance to her lectures; we were essentially given a youtube playlist and abandoned to learn coursework on our own. She never responded to a single email I sent asking for help, and we had four assignments due every week, sometimes more.
I think she ran the course well considering how quickly everything moved online Content taught through YouTube videos They were great at explaining concepts^ Lectures served to provide clarification on difficult problems She's caring and thoughtful Only negatives were heavy workload (3-4 assignments/quizzes per week) and difficult exams
I took math 102 with Svetlana online. Her lectures are scattered so I didn't go. It's a flipped class so you teach yourself the content, she does examples, and then you complete the assignments. 102 is assignment heavy. Math lab is *chefs kiss*. Do the lectures on math lab under chapter contents, they're more concise than the youtube videos.
Steer clear during covid/online courses. Shes a lovely person, but horrible online prof. Literally paid a tutor to teach me everything (even though the course was near $600) because she posted YouTube videos (not her speaking) as lessons, ads included lol. Good luck if you have her - Id recommend watching MLM videos over the YouTube ones.
Didn't teach at all. I don't know why I even had to pay for this class. The final was ridiculously hard and she doesn't seem to care about students at all.
Had her for Math 101, and I could barely understand her accent which made it really hard to follow along in lectures. Halfway through the course I was completely lost. I re-took Math 101 online at TRU and it was way easier and less confusing just reading through the textbook and doing practice problems.
Horrible, lazy prof. Is only at UVIC because her husband is an amazing, high level math prof.
The worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. Do everything in your power to steer clear from her. Made me rethink my existence. Quite easily the laziest prof known to man. Do not take her class. I would rather shove a fork through my hand then retake this class. Nice outside of class though.
I do think she is an amazing person, however, she is the absolute worst prof I've ever had she only confuses me more in the lectures. I have to teach myself absolutely EVERYTHING else and the amount of work is INSANE. Long assignments due on midterm weeks, completely failed the midterm even though I did the most that I could for the content. 0/10.
Super nice lady but there is lots of space for improvement when it comes to teaching... Course is not well organized, would not recommend.
Worst professor I've had by far! She seems like a nice person but her idea of teaching is make a YouTube playlist and have you teach yourself. She's super unsympathetic if you do bad on a midterm, instead of helping HER students she pawns you off to the Math and Stats center. The midterms are completely unreasonable, complex questions little time!
Svetlana is the best math prof in the whole university. No questions asked. She is AMAZING. She will help you pass this course no matter what. She wants to see you succeed. Don't be scared, you will pass this course if you take from her, she will make sure of it. You will understand everything. Even online. I highly recommend her to anyone.
Very unapproachable during lectures. Emailing her leaves you more frustrated as she doesn't respond and only uses the syllabus as a response to your inquiries if she feels like replying
3-4 heavy assignments/gwt/quizzes per week. Linked other peoples youtube vids to teach which often had mistakes. Didn't feel set up for success for the extremely difficult exams. Needed a tutor. MLM questions dock marks on things never specifically stated, wasn't willing to help w questions. Didn't complete midterms, & they were 1 directional.
This was the hardest class by far I've ever taken (3rd yr). At the beginning I thought Svetlana was really sweet, but then soon found out I was set up for disaster. So many things due per week, with hours of effort, to barely understand the concepts/how to do them. The midterms and final was insanely hard and no chance for part marks.
We were assigned tons of homework (3-4 quizzes, tests, assignments per week). I basically taught myself through the YouTube videos that she provided us with. The midterms and exams were NOTHING like the practice exams, we had very little time, 10 -12 questions. She was not supportive and didn't feel like she wanted us to succeed.
Svetlana is passionate but made me very upset. She gives so many assignments and they are on a third-party site, and quizzes and tests are basically automated through there, but then suddenly her exams are all different (only like 9 questions too so more weight on each question). She also posts YouTube videos as "lectures" and they don't help.
Svetlana is very good at teach concepts and is a very nice professor. Her exams are difficult, but still fair. Very organized class, would take her again.
If there was a negative 3 option i'd give her a -3. Way too much homework assigned for marks, instead of learning it found myself trying to just get it done. Just take it with another prof. Listen to what your friends say. Just listen and take with other prof
she was terrible. made the class so so so much harder than it had to be. the tests weren't even remotely similar to what we did in class.
Nothing she goes over in lecture is on the midterms and she claimed that curbing the tests was illegal. When asked what would be on the midterms she said she couldnt teach to the test because it was unethical. Hardest thing Ive done in my life, absolutely ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
like paying hundreds to watch youtube playlists? do u enjoy collectively failing the impossible midterms and being gaslit by ur teacher? congrats this course is for you! 0/10 taking this course just to feel something again
Many of the reviews are misleading. Students are provided with enough material to succeed in the course. People need to recognize that Calc is not easy or straightforward. Having prior Calc experience will be an asset in her class, I also recommend trying to stay ahead to get the most of her lectures and use bright space tools to prepare for tests
Worst professor at uvic by far. Seems to love ruining students chances of succeeding in the class. Exams were moved online due to covid and she decided make the exam more difficult than it would be if it was written in person. You only have one chance to answer a question and cannot go back to it with no partial marks for anything. Unfair to us.
Wait, why does she have such a bad score? MATH 101 is difficult by nature, but she does an excellent job teaching and answering questions in great detail. Midterms were a bit unfair with how little time we got, but the final was perfectly reasonable. I always felt comfortable in her lectures, even if I didn't understand everything.
This was a really pretty hard class for me, I previously taken calculus in highschool. The Midterms for this class were pretty hard, the final was multiple choice which helped. There are assignments, quizes and tests due every week, the TA markers were very tough. Svetlana can be hard to understand some times, but she was always willing to help me
She was my course coordinator this fall (didn't teach my lectures, just organized the course). I got 95+ in pre-calc in high school, but this course tanked my confidence. 6+ hours of homework each week (that was not helpful for tests) & class average of 45-55 on both midterms. Fast-paced & hard to get help. Don't take this with a full course-load!!
Svetlana is clearly passionate about teaching math, she is easy to talk to, and her lectures are engaging, however, her exams are much more difficult than any assignments or tests she gives out. Don't let your guard down. She is also brutally honest and may seem rude, but I think she means well.
Svetlana's class is HARD (I had a 95 in gr 12 calc but I ended with a 74 in her class, and I worked hard) but she is an amazing teacher. I really enjoyed the lectures, Svetlana is engaging and really cares about teaching. She is very honest but in a reassuring way. Despite it being my lowest mark, she was still my favourite prof. Go to office hours
I had her last term and I have NO IDEA how she's still a prof at uvic. I'm in 3rd year and she's by far the worse prof I've had hands down. Lots amount of weekly work and even though I found the quizzes EASY the midterm was INSANELY HARD nothing like we did in class. I can't believe she thinks rounding is illegal when all other profs do it.
By far my favorite teacher this semester! Her lectures were easy to follow and she gives lots of opportunities for marks outside of the exams. The workload was heavy but if you work through the practice materials and go during office hours her tests are very fair.
Svetlana was approachable and respectful. The bright space page was extremely organized and she provided many resources such as library of reliable sources. The grading method nd instructions were clear.Assignment took around 2 hours/week-reasonable.The midterm was a bit harder than expected.Sit in the first rows, participate and you will do amazing.
just terrible don't take. problems we did in class did NOT reflect the difficulty of our exams. literally if anyone else is teaching go with them, Dr Oshkai is not caring or understanding of student's needs. the final was not at all fair idk where half of that stuff came from.
Made the tests very hard and made a passing average on the exams to pass the class, therefore, most students failed. One assignment she explained it completely wrong and more than 90% of the class got a 0% she felt no shame by saying that it was our fault we did not catch her mistake and should have read the instructions rather than listen to her.
Svetlana might teach courses that many people find challenging, but she is definitely not to blame. Her brightspace has tons of resources, and her lectures provide a good overview of the topics. This course has lots of assignments, quizzes, and tests which seem overwhelming but take weight off the exams.
The program used for quizzes, tests, and homework (mylabmath) shows steps and gives a lot of practice questions. Yes, it's a lot of work, but it's calculus so that's expected. The exams were TOUGH, but again, if you do all the practice you'll be fine. I got a 97 overall. Don't be scared to ask for help! She is super kind and helpful.
I worked so hard in the class, I spent hours doing homework/working with a tutor and I still didn't pass. The tests were unrealistically hard and very different from the material we did in lectures/assignments. The course was very homework heavy. And Svetlana refused to accommodate me for my medical condition. Worst prof/class I've ever had.
So much homework every week and the tests are way too hard compared to the other work. Never taking this class again.
I had a terrible time in her class and would avoid her. So much homework in this class and the design questions she creates are poorly worded and tough to exceed in especially when it is marked out of 2! Stay away from her classes!
Oshkai is a pretty good professor but get ready to have tons and tons of homework. She is really nice but the workload is insane.
I was worried about this class going in as I did poorly in pre-calc 12, and have never taken calculus. Surprisingly, this has been my favorite class this semester. It's not easy by any means, but just do the hw and you'll be fine. Lectures are entertaining and concepts are explained clearly. She might try and scare you on the 1st day - ignore it.
This class was HARD but Svetlana was awesome. Her lectures are filled with examples and set you up well for the homework (which there is a LOT of). She grades fairly, and is very flexible is you feel like you demonstrated understanding on a test but were not given the marks, and will change the mark. I really really enjoyed lectures with her :)
Loved this class! Passionate & clear lectures (encouraged me to pursue a minor in math!) The pacing is due to the volume/difficulty of material. Weekly hw was helpful imo + tests were fair. People struggle due to a lack of fluent precalc skills. Go to office hours! She's happy to help & takes all questions. Many resources on BS & MLM.
Final Exam was super harder. Multiple choice, but there was 8 options for each questions and they included options like 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5...
-Exams are a lot harder than homework or examples done in class. -Final was m/c but you had to show work in order to get the mark. Should've just made it long answer (at least you could've gotten partial marks) -Very heavy in homework and assignments. -Prof is nice but the amount of work and brutal final isn't worth it.
so bad, a great human being. horrible teacher.
Absolutely awful. The exams are way different than homework and assignments. She made the final exam multiple choice but you only get the mark if you show work. Very stupid way to test knowledge. Avoid her class at all costs. So much work in her class and a terrible teacher
She is an excellent professor, I highly recommend taking a class with her. Be prepared ro study a lot and work hard on her classes, not that she is hard but rather because the course is not easy. If you show up for office hours she will answer and explain is details any problem you have. One of the greatest professors i have ever seen.
I would say there were a lot of homework due and assignments, but after getting to the final you realize that all these assignments you had to do was a good foundation to prepare you to the final, and the prof is an amazing prof absolutely recommend her if you ever need to take this class. She is super helpful in office hours too.
Hard class, but she genuinely wants to help you succeed and offers office hours multiple times a week. Weekly homework assignments with quiz, and design questions BUT the practice is honestly necessary, gets easier more you do. Lectures are content heavy so strongly recommend taking the time to read text for clarification and going to office hours
Professor Oshkai is amazing. She never minds slowing down, has office hours multiple times a week, can be reached via Brightspace and email, was accommodating and is just a really kind human. The course isn't easy and there's lots of homework if you want to pass, but she supplies lots of material similar to what will be tested.
Definitely go to all the lectures, Professor Oshkai is very good at explaining concepts. However, it seems like the exams are on only the easiest and hardest versions of questions. Exams are harder than you would expect them to be for the content. Professor Oshkai is very caring and helpful though, so I still quite recommend this class.
Did a poor job a explaining material. Quizzes and hw were nothing like exams/midterms. Average on the final was 40%. If you dont do a ton of extra work to COMPLETELY understand the material then you will struggle on her exams. Exams are very hard to prepare for, and I dont feel like they were graded fairly.
Svetlana is a great lady. You can tell she has been teaching a long time based on the tricks she had to help us understand. The midterm mark averages were low but if you are willing to study HARD, there are so many resources available. Online textbook heavy. Go to lecture if you want to do well. Classes were not recorded unless you were sick.
horrible prof would avoid at all costs
Svetlana was awful. she was the worst prof I have ever had and will ever have I bet. the class average was 40%. I would avoid at all costs if she still has a job.
It's insane how Uvic has not fired her. Complete joke of a professor... I would avoid her class by all means. HORRIBLE!
By far the worst prof I've had at Uvic. Midterms were nothing like the weekly assignments. Overall class average was 40%. Avoid taking a class with her.
Not a great prof. Avoid her if you can, her exams are on Saturdays throughout the semester. Very hard exams and tough grading. Class average for calc 1 was something around 50%. Way harder than it needed to be.
Prepare to study hard for this course. Lectures don't fully prepare you for the challenging exams, but utilizing resources like unstuckstudy ai alongside the textbook can really help. Attend class and be ready to put in the work.
Can't understand her accent to much homework get ready to do a test every week and lots off math that she doesn't know how to teach properly avoid if you can
late on first day of class didnt know if she was in the right room and asked a student what class they were there for. super thick accent which she cant control but really difficult to understand when learning uni level calc. way too many busywork homework assignments quizzes/tests. tests outside of class time. plz do not take. i dropped.
Svetlana seems like a really sweet lady however, this course is extremely homework-heavy and test-heavy with quizzes and tests weekly. Only one question for each section was done in class and the rest you have to figure out on your own. If you are not good with graphing I would not recommend this course with Svetlana.
Had to drop this course because I failed the midterm at a 29% after receiving 90-100% in highschool. Weekly tests & quizzes with additional 30 assignment questions, so absolutely no time to slack off. I was doing well (86%) on assignments etc but the midterm was nothing like assignments or notes in class. Even went to office hours EVERYDAY, no help
Awful prof. Exams are so unfair. Don't take class w her.
This course had a big workload with the amount of assignments and weekly quizzes, but it actuallly helped in terms of making sure students keep up with the material. That being said her exams are absolutely atrocious. Graphing questions that are worth a ridicolous amount, and there's no prep (MyLab only has multiple choice for graphing). avoid her.
Svetlana was an amazing teacher, she always came to class with a positive attitude. Although the hw assignments are a lot of questions (around 25) they aren't hard. "recommended questions" are supplied to the class which the exams are based upon. If you do them, you will be able to survive her confusingly designed exams.
Svetlana was a good teacher with lectures that made it obvious she cares. Her accent was often hard to understand but she did supply recordings upon request. Lots of homework that was not like exams at all. Lectures barely taught, we were basically given examples instead. Great teacher if you have taken calc before, if not, drop immediately.
Svetlana is super nice and sweet although this class is very difficult. The exams were nothing like what we did in class or in my math lab, and Math 102 is said to be for students who aren't strong in calculus although the difficulty was ridiculous. I went to office hours everyday after class, had a tutor, and constantly studying. Avoid taking this
shes really funny but not a great teacher, she will give one example in class and I had to teach myself, my class of over 200 students averaged a 48% on the midterm, and for two of the questions on the test not a single student out of my whole class go the answer right, and she refused to curve the questions. She is very nice in lecture though
I think all these ratings are pretty harsh on Prof. Oshkai. She is super sweet and approachable. I think people don't like how homework heavy this course is, but it forced me to understand and actually learn the content. It's not hard material, you just have to put in work to get the hang of it. She gives you everything necessary to do good
I did really well in highschool pre-cal, didn't take intro calc, and I honestly found the course quite tame. It makes sense that its supposed to be the easiest one. Best thing about this course, NO TRIG IDENTITIES. just do the homework and practice its that simple
I think Sveltana is a very nice lady but I think her tests are extremely unfair. The first midterm had a question where majority of the students got it wrong and she didn't take it off or made it worth less and thought it was the students fault (it was worth 7% of the test). So she is nice but her tests are very hard so be prepared to study lots.
please please please avoid her she is the worst!!!!!! hardest tests and totally not fair at all!!!!
Bruh I am unsure of what my final grade is but Svetlana was overall a decent professor. She offers many office hours but her final exam was extremely difficult and I felt poor about my performance despite rigorous studying throughout the semester. Easier class than Math 109 but had difficult exams with averages around 50% each time.
Svetlana is really nice and has lots of office hours. She is really great at explaining calc in an approachable way. Lots of homework, but you need it to boost your grade because the tests are very hard. Class averaged 50% on all major tests. Despite studying and preparing a lot it was a hard class to do well in and caused me a lot of stress.
Svetlana is a dedicated professor who is accessible outside class and during office hours. I studied consistently throughout the course with high averages on the midterms but still found the final exam extremely difficult. Her class average overall was a 59, but despite her challenging exams it is still an easier course than math 109.
I absolutely love Svetlana. If you're someone who's going in because you want to take the math course and you WANT to do well, Svetlana is a great educator as her methods of teaching go above and beyond. You should absolutely ask her questions and you will see she truly does care about her students and wants them to succeed. Absolutely terrific.
Svetlana has been one of my favorite professors this past semesters. She genuinely wants her students to do well and is so wholesome during lectures. She also provides lots of homeworks and gateway tests (3% weight) to prepare for exams. Her exams are also super easy and marking is fair. TIPS: attend all lectures and finish all homework
Difficult to understand in lecture and also in the questions she makes for the homework/ exams hard to understand. For the exam questions that don't make sense on the exam she adds it up for you to “interpret”. Over all the the test are overly difficult. The avergage grades for the midterms was 50% which is absurd.
I believe the poor reviews for Svetlana is because she teaches a tough course that a lot of first year students aren't prepared for. The exam questions were pulled right from the practice problems she posted on the course outline, and she told us that in advance. A lot class average isn't due to a poor instructor, but unprepared students.
I appreciated that there was homework and quizzes online since they were good grade boosters although they still don't make up for the Midterms that were extremely difficult. About 7+ hours of homework a week in this class alone and none of it prepared me for the tests. The final was easier although graded more unfairly than the midterms.
a very caring prof. every week a set of around 15-20 practice problems was posted, which is kinda a lot, but it's the key for successfully completing the course. all the problems on the midterms and on the final were taken from an online textbook, which made it fairly easy to prepare. though, the class average was only 57%.
Svetlana is a wonderful teacher and the nicest woman ever. She offers lots of support with her office hours that she holds 6x a week where you can basically get private tutoring. Even with office hours though the midterms were very hard and the homework questions I didn't find prepared me well for the midterms but the final was pretty easy.
Super kind and good at explaining things in a simple way. The weekly MyLabMath assignments and quizzes were very time consuming but definitely prepared me well for the midterms and final exam. Tests were fair and she even put a question that a lot of people struggled with on the first midterm on the second one as a bonus.
Quite at teaching the subject matter and cares about students and that they do well. Still a difficult course with more mandatory homework than most classes. Overall a pretty decent prof and I would definitely take a course with her again.
The teacher style was clear yet engaging. Really involves the students in the lecture by asking questions and doing activities, also likes to make jokes. But this does not take time away from the actually math. This class completely changes the way I approach math, would really recommend if you're willing to put in the effort.
Probably the best math teacher I've ever had in my life; extremely supportive & friendly. I noticed that she actively tailors the course based on feedback. The homework tends to be easier than the exams, but all the exam/lecture q's are pulled directly from the textbook. Just make sure to actually do the homework and pay attention in lecture!
Entertaining lectures, would recommend
Tests were 70%. I got 40% on both midtrms but 100% on hw/quizzes + 60% on GWTs = 42% total. So, I only needed 26% on final to pass. My mom literally died, so I flew home and deferred the exam. Svetcуka ghosted all my emails. Grade came back just “F,” no %, after drop date so I got dropped from next sem + paid 50%. No way I got < 8/30 (26.7%).
She's a great prof, very enthusiastic and helpful, quick to respond to emails and forum posts, and is generally kind and understanding. the coursework was very time consuming, but I believe it did a good job at preparing us for the exams. She gives you all the resources you need to succeed, you just need to actually use them.
I took MATH 101 and Svetlana was the course coordinator. I watched some of the lectures she posted for all the sections and I think she did a good job explaining the material. Above all I think she is very kind. She seems dedicated to helping students learn. She gave me a lot of good feedback on how I can improve, and left me inspired!
I don't think there's a professor who cares about the quality of your math education more than Svetlana Oshkai. She took every moment to provide student with online and offline resources, her time and helpful feedback. Her course structure is actually based on studies on how to get best success in first year math classes.
Lectures are unclear, much easier to learn on your own.
has an attitude
She is the goat!!! and people who say otherwise are likely just mad because they weren't expecting university level calculus to be hard like be fr... She's a GREAT prof it's not her fault that the course material itself is difficult she does a great job at explaining it.
The course itself was hard but office hours with Svetlana saved me, wonderful woman, clear explanations
Wonderful teacher, the content was challenging at times but taught well.
she's good
One of the best professors I have ever had! She somehow managed to make lectures about calculus engaging and entertaining. She clearly cares a lot about her students doing well and has designed the course based off of her own studies on success in calculus courses. Her office hours were so helpful! She deserves a much higher score on here.
