she has no humor and has panic attacks in class if any body has a question. She does not speak very good english, which wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that she's teaching students that don't understand her examples and is unwilling to clarify.
She should not be teaching. She has a heavy accent and has a hard time explaining things in English. If you ask too many questions, she gets frustrated. Most people ended up dropping.
Horrible teacher. Half the time she'd talk about herself, or confuse herself and the class because she couldnt explain something in English. And then she'd start screaming at us for not understanding her.

She has a few fatal flaws: she does not make math easy to understand. This teacher takes points off your test for not doing problems her way. She speaks with a heavy accent (Russian). She has wrongly accused several of her own students of cheating. She is very, very unpredictable in how she grades HW and classwork. Nobody in class trusts her...
This teacher is a nice person and all but she doenst understand how to teach a class. All she does is stand up at the bord and write. You cant understand her and she doesnt understand anything you ask her. DO NOT GET HER AS A TEACHER. OH and bad english speaking skills.
If you are literate & know what math is, you know it's tough unless you work at it (same as with everything else in life). After terrible instruction in HS, I'd hated all math til I took Prof. P's class. It was the greatest experience I have ever had with math... She's brilliant, hillarious, and truly kind. She'll go out of her way to help you! I g
Shes a good teacher, help students alot, give extra points, even if she is russian, she knows how to teach, but student needs to help him/herself to get good grade, but she did her job in a perfect way, and i don't mind to take math with her again, and guys when you wanna rate a teacher be fair and honest,if shes not good, nobody will get A's and B's
Before taking this class I hated math with a passion, but after having Svetlana for a teacher I actually started to enjoy it more since she taught it very well. I liked how she was to the point and didn't have you trying a million different ways to solve a problem, she was an excellent teacher and quite hillarious as well:)
Yes, hilarious is the word. I would recommend her to anybody. Any math. She is fair and helps you to learn. I want to track her down where else she is teaching.
She is quite unclear, not just because of her horrible accent, but because she is always jumping around back and fourth on the board and what she is talking about!!!!!! I would recommened Martinelli however he does not teach this class so blah maybe snow then she was good!!
I would give her an "A-", because only God is perfect. She definitely knows what she is talking about. Bad news - you HAVE TO DO YOUR HW! Good news - all her tests are based on hw and quizzes plus she follows her syllabus(surprise!) and very helpful.
In our class we could practice all her tests & quizzes on-line which was a nice surprise.Gives hella extra credit too. Overall I found her very helpful. A lot of things that she taught were not covered by other teachers. She does not like when you talk during her lectures though.
couldnt understand what she was saying
The heavy accent is the first problem. The main problem I have with any teacher(particularly math) is when a teacher expects you to learn the material by reading the text first, then just repeating in class what you read. With math, the text should supplement the teacher, not the other way around. Do NOT take without prior knowledge of the subjec
Excellent teacher. Very nice, cool, with a sense of humor. Structured, relaxed, humorous, & humble. She explains math in such cool, calm, obvious clarity that it is near enjoyable. She has my highest recommendation

With Podkolzina you reap what you sow as it should be! I recommend her highly.
She's very patient and trys various ways to get the point across, even if it means having one of the students help in explaining...somtetimes coming from your own peer helps a lot. Gives much homework... but hey, how else do you learn math but practice, practice... if you don't like to do work and skip class alot, don't expect a good grade. with Po
You'd do better understanding the concepts from the book and making sure you take another instructor. Most of the time her methods are unclear and she refuses to elaborate upon them.As someone else said she commonly accuses her students of cheating.I have attended Solano since I began HS(2002) and she is by far the worst instructor I have ever had.
she gets started right when you get into class so make sure you already have your pencil and paper out for notes. She doesnt really leave room for questions, and she expects that you know the material after she teaches it. she is very hard to keep up with.
Ms. P is great. Yes she could be tough at times but I think that is good especially if you are planning on going to higher level math. Accent takes some getting use to but overall she is great and funny
you get what you give. A lot of people didn't like her because they were lazy and expected special treatment. They also blamed her accent. I had no trouble following her, and her macabre sense of humor was hilarious. It's probably the russian in her.
She is pretty hard, but I have to admit she's pushed me to work harder...esp her online homework. Bonus: two online tests=2 submissions each + she gives bonus points to help raise your grade a little, but you have to earn them! I hope this helps.
Nice teacher but has a very thick accent. You have to work hard in her class.
This teacher is horrible. She barely touches the surface of certain subjects and expects u to complete her online assignments. i think she is lazy that's why she assigns it. once u get started on the hw, u'll be left scratching ur head thinking "did we do this in class?"
I took her MATH 104 Hybrid class, very hard class don't recommend for anyone unless you have a good understanding of algebra. The work we learned from the online part has nothing to do with her inclass quizzes/tests, the final was the hardest. Terrible accent but she's a nice person & she is very strict when it comes to missing work.
your grade will match your commitment and effort. guaranteed. i can't stand math, but i had a great time in her class. she actually made higher level math kind of exciting for me. if you have no desire to learn, you will fail. it's that simple... just as with everything else in life.
Ms. P is fantastic!!! American education is not, and she has to waste her time reversing years and years of ignorance.
I took this class online over the summer and it was hard. Even though the test and quizzes were short, it was tough memorizing everything in a short period of time. Some tests were at the campus. Her accent is weird too. Don't take her unless you're good at math and don't take her over the summer.
At the end of the sem. there were only 6 ppl left. she was very angry anytime i missed class. she told me "i give quiezzes when ur gone" (i missed about 4 days the sem. so that's 4 f's on quizzes. panics when u ask for help. marks u off for correct answers if u do it a diff. way. told us that foreign students are better than us. I give her an F-.
She was very helpful and spent a lot of time to explain my questions after class. Her lecture & assigned hw definitely helped me a lot to prepare for the quizes & tests. She was tough but funny. She encouraged students to move on to a certain level. I enjoyed her class. Read txtbk & do hw, then go to her class. You won't be dissapointed.
I was added late to her class. Stayed in her class for one or two days. At times get angry and yells for no reason, very unprofessional and disorganized. Switch out into Zak Hannan's Math 20. What a difference. Zak Hannan may be hard but he is much clear and comprehensible to understand other than Phd Ms. P
When you ask her a question she acts as if you are stupid for not understanding a problem and most of the time if she does not know the answer she will get really irritated.
Never again... I would never again take a class she was teaching. Worst math teacher ever.
Excellent calculus teacher. Rigorously proves virtually every theorem or idea presented. Is helpful if you ask questions, she truly is patient. Give it a day or two to get used to the accent. She is an amazing knowledge resource, knows math cold. One of the best professors I've been blessed with in my educational career. Do the homework online!
HORRIBLE. gets mad at you when you ask a question and is not very social. i definitely would not take her ever again. not the worst when it comes to actual teaching but honestly, probably the meanest teacher i've ever had.
hard teacher, great online class.....good mix
nice and damn fair. do i dare say fabulous?
Summer semester course. Professor Podkolzina does a good job at explaining the material in such a constrained period of time. The subject is challenging so doing the homework is highly recommended to gain a better understanding. She is a fair grader and focuses on the understanding of the class as a whole. One of the better teachers to learn from.
if you are the type that asks questions and needs more explaning, she is not the teacher for you. Gets mad when u ask questions. If u already know math 104 than she is ok. But deff. not a teacher that likes to help
She's very rude and it seems like shes teaching a second language. Her accent is very thick, and she thinks everyone is against her because of her accent. She will not help you if you need help, and will not answer your questions at all. She's rude, take kirkbride!
just took her online class, what a nightmare... you have to check everyday to make sure you dont miss one of her many pop quizzes. also its ridiculous the way your grade is weighted! homework is only 5% while the final alone is 40%. would not recommend!
Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. Just finihed up her online course and talk about a miserable class. She puts a syllabes and doesn't stick to it. Who the hell gives pop quizzes on the internet? So much for convience, you have to check twice a day to make sure she didn't sneak one by you. Ended up with a 90 for HW, but a 59 for quizzes due to 0's.
This is NOT an easy class, and she is NOT a push-over teacher...she is here to do her job which is teach! And she does it well. Taking an online course requires dedication, organization and a professor who is willing to help you along the way, which she does. I would highly recommend taking her classes if you are actually interested in LEARNING!!!
Organization is key - the quizzes were ALL notated on the fixed calender which students have constant access to. Here's a hint, copy the entire semesters calender onto your desktop or paper calender, this way you are always prepared. Stay focused and go to her study groups if you need help. The grading is fair, it's up to you to do the work.
Good class, very difficult pace for busy adults. The tests are the weighted heavily. The calendar and related material is accurate, read it. My math lab prepares you but ensure you are retaining the material. Use the test review CD when you need to see an example. Professor P. wants to help, go to her for reviews and as a resource. She is patient.
Wow, what a great class. Math is never "easy" but with the way coursecompass.com is set up it is pretty easy to navigate the class. You have to be really dedicated and work hard. Organization is key in this class, and it behoves you to log in daily. Professor Podkolzina is a wonderful teacher, she responds quick to e-mails and is very helpful.
She knows her stuff.
Took this class online which was really dumb. Math should not be offered online. She had office hours online, but the three times I tried to attend she never answered my questions. Bad teacher, don't take.
HORRRIBLE TEACHER! Took her class spring10, was most miserable class in my life. She sneaks in pop quizes online you have to check twice a day. Classes should never take up your whole life as her class did. Has hw/test due at 2AM so it looks like nothing is due that day, shows up when past due. Can hardly speak english. Had to withdraw w/ W.
This class is fairly difficult and the teacher knows that. Talk to her often outside class and she'll help you. All I can say is do EVERY problem she assigns BEFORE class (Trust me!!!). She will pick on you and slap you if you don't. Other than that, she's a lenient grader on tests. Just let her know you know what you're doing if you get marked.
I took this class online during the summer and it was a fast paced and difficult class. However, she picks the homework carefully, which ends up being a great study tool. If you are taking this online - check the websites DAILY. She is very understanding and helpful if you communicate with her. Good teacher, I would take another math class from he
Taking her class was very challenging. She is a very intelligent woman who is passionate about math. However, her willingness to explain/help relies on what her mood is that day. She makes the class do lots of group work. I recommend reviewing what she is going to talk about for the day before class, and also lots of studying. Good luck.
Very difficult to understand her accent. Hands out summarized packets of each lesson, doesn't give helpful notes at all. Expects you to have prior knowledge of what will be taught in class. Can't really go to her for help, overall taking her class is a strain.
She answers her mail immediately, even at night! Very helpfull indeed. Grading is on a tough side though. Other than that I would take her classes again. I only appreciated her after taking the next level class.
one of the worst teachers ive ever had! not only was she unsympathetic, but she was mean and didnt make learning a difficult subject like calculus any easier!
She is very organized and good. Starts from the minute she enters her class. Anyone who couldn't pass this class either didn't try , put it on a back burner or isn't ready for it yet. My grade is not the best and it is my responisbility. I think it's horrible that people would post such aweful lies about a really good professor. Grow up.
Good: very intelligent woman, who knows her math extremely well. Bad: very unwilling to answer questions depending on mood, somewhat hard to understand, and her organization can be better. Quizzes are given at random (dont believe her calendar) and the subject covered on them are not clearly given beforehand either, so be on your toes.
I see posts re pop quizzes. You must login daily to see what’s coming up.Some quizzes stay open for a short time but if you login daily it’s not a big deal.Prof Podkolzina wants students to succeed, but you must speak up and ask for help. I can't stress enough the importance of staying current. If you get behind you will not do well in this class.
Good teacher, very helpful class
This teacher was extremely difficult. I took the class online but our midterm & finals were in person. She was so confusing and it was difficult for me to understand her. She can be quite demeaning if you ask her a "dumb" question. The only way to do well in this class is to know the material and try to get on her good side.
hardest class of my life. Took the online class, and it consumed my life completely until it was done. No time for anything else, missed many occasions due to tests and quizzes. Terrible how homework is weighted 5% and the final is 35% and quizzes are 10%. She is fairly rude, but she has a heart. Show interest and put in work and she will notice.
you can pass if you do well on the final. unlike other online classes here, she makes you take her midterm and final face-to-face which is a pain. she also has face to face office hours & gives extra credit for going. shes a tough grader but if you want to learn, take any of her classes. oh and read her syllabus bc then you wont be surprised
Took her Math20 . Hard class and glad I took it.It is true she has heart but most important she teaches the right stuff.
She was a wonderful professor and made the material fun. Very nice, and always willing to help students that were struggling, even when they were outwardly rude to her. Highly recommend her!
This teacher is strict but fair. Pros: returns emails quickly and instructions are clear.Cons: will not change your grade - she says you get what you earned, period
She teaches you to think
I had a really tough time with this class. I just ended up giving up since i got lost and confused. I had previously taken this class in high school and passed, now I failed just because she expects you to know pre -algebra and everything is review. Also, she won't accept excuses like i haven't taken math in 3 years or things like that.
I took the intermediate algebra class online, and it consumed me as a person. Dozens of assignments due weekly. In the end I realized that nothing besides the final and tests matters, because work only carries a 5% weight to the final grade. Do good on the final, and pass. She is very hard to understand and gets mad over nothing. Convoluted class
shes tough but if you get your work done and communicate with her, you will understand
She is a good Professor. I took her class on line and I did good in her class, although I have been out of school for 30 years. there are a lot of home work just like any other math class. The tests on line were supper easy because if you did not do well, you can normally take it atleast for one or two more times. Mid and final was easy.
I wish I could take her again. Many things I considered not important when she taught them, since she did not test on them "attention, this is beyound the course outline", Boy was I wrong.
Responds within an hour or two. Ms P , I learned a lot. Thank you!
My only beef with her is her grading - it is harsh, but fair. Other than that her online and face-to-face classes are good and highly recommended (I tried both). I think, her hybrid Math104 is easier , because attendance may be virtual and you still can come on Fridays to clarify stuff.
Her dry sarcasm comes across as rudeness to some, but she is nice.
I was ready to take on this class due to reviews from others. I knew Id have a slight struggle being that it was my first online class. This course requires a lot of work and the teacher uses Canvas and MyMathLab, both of which she doesn't have set up and organized very well. I regret taking this class and later dropped it due to not receiving help
She has her own unique way of teaching. She wants you to know "why" before she shows "how". She wants you to read the book and has lectures posted in Canvas. Quizzes and tests may be hard. She has warm-up, then the next day - quizzes you. Very interesting class, indeed. I learned a lot!
Ms Podkolzina's grading is tough. All Friday lectures are posted in Canvas. Most assignments are in mml though, including videos. Do not miss Practice quiz before midterms. Overall a LOT of work but doable, depends on how you budget your time. If you need an easy class to support your GPA, go elsewhere. Still highlyrecommended for serious students.
Brutally honest. I wish I could take her again.
For me her class was enjoyable, even though the material is hard itself. She teaches difficult topics and returns back and forth , when we fail a quiz, she teaches well, including returning quizzes the next day! She's really nice and funny. The best math professor I've ever had. Highly recommended for those want to learn well.
Expect pop-up quizzes, or "warm-up" quizzes, exit quizzes and the like:(( Overall she is an excellent teacher who keeps you on your toes. She has heart and some people abuse her patience, but she just moves on.
Not a fan of this teacher. Took hybrid class. Nice you could log into class from home, but she is extremely hard to understand, usually confused me more. If you are able to work alone and are good at math this is your class. A lot of help located in data base but didn't find until end of semester. Also comes off as rude. But will help if you ask.
I did not expect to learn much in online, but this teacher was very helpful. She would answer my questions late at night and even rescheduled tests.
I took this class online and I was a little afraid because math is not my strong point. This professor always got back to my emails right away and was EXTREMELY helpful. She offers online conference call so I could actually speak with here. I highly recommend this teacher and I'll take her again for upper division math classes.
Took the summer online math class. Her online layout is very confusing. If you work full time then this is not the class for you. It is very time consuming. If you don't have a strong math background then I wouldn't recommend taking this class. Try an in-person class if you really want to understand what is being taught. She can be rude also
If you can work past her heavy accent and see the material she is lecturing, this is still a difficult course. If you have issues with a certain problem in class, her reply will be "ask your classmates". I felt as if she was unwilling to assist us with anything and would openly belittle you in front of the class if you didn't understand.
Not only does she give a lot of work in an online class but when trying to listening to her lectures, it is impossible! Her accent is way too heavy and like someone had said below when approached in person she is rude. Taken her twice and will not anymore.
Her online class has way too much homework and assignments. She's pretty easy to talk to through email but when you talk to her in person she is so rude. One of the rudest teachers I've ever met and regret taking. During her final she made everyone uncomfortable with her rudeness and was sassy and not helpful at all. Way too much attitude.
She was the best math teacher who replied quickly to all questions I asked. This class was a make it or break it for my transfer. She makes herself available to her students when they ask and rescheduled tests for us, took questions online live. My only issue was she requires a lot of work. She wants you to learn, you just have to suck it up
Though I was barely passing, I could not blame it on her. She went out of her way to help, but boy she sets bar high. I feel she prepared me well for the next class. It is up to me now. Tough grader but willing to give you chances . She is funny too. Many times we laughed . I enjoyed her class. Highly recommend her. She cares about all of us.
-Her lectures are mostly on PROOFS, w/. min. examples, +math problems that mostly (75%+) go unanswered. -She expects you to know how to do the HW based on her lectures; doesn't grade it. -She WILL grade the weekly quizzes, which are based on the HW (that you weren't sure how to do/didn't know if done correctly). -MAC HW is forced group work.
It's not like it's her fault, but the accent shouldn't be ignored -- it's hard to understand her sometimes. If you can get past that, it's a very fun class. Her lectures are very hard to follow, so you may need to do quite an it if work outside of class. She does care about your grade. Ultimately, I'll miss the class, but I wouldn't take it again.
I took her hybrid algebra. I wish I had her more than once a week. She is funny+explains the same thing several different ways, it may be confusing at times. She is not like others- use this formula. She uses an older edition of the book and it makes it cheaper. I liked homework on computer, but she still wants you to show work on paper.
If you're used to taking easy Math Classes, when you take Mrs. Podkolzina, that ends. Even though I may have little to severe Algebraic Weaknesses, I can see what she is after. In her class, you must work hard, & do every bit of HW she assigns. Trust me, it will pay off if you do all the HW, & read the textbook. If you want to learn math, take her!
I like this class, because Professor responds 24/7 and teaches well. The amount of work is manageable IF ONLY you keep up with her pace. Sometimes it was a challenge.
Worst professor. I took a combo class which means it's online but there are classes in person that are optional. I stopped going to those very quickly because her russian accent is seriously so hard to understand. Plus she has so much attitude. She's also someone who gives out homework on the 1st day. Cried and sweat for her class and still failed.
My final was not as good as I expected, but I still give my highest recommendations to this professor. I learned a lot. Homework was a bit too much form day #1, other than that she is wonderful.
She tells you upfront that homework matters and yet the homework is not graded. Too bad if you skip doing it. Surprise NOT she likes quizzing you on homework. Highly recommend you not to miss her classes. Trust me, you will not get this experience with anybody else at Solano. Sure I was not thinking seriously about math before taking her class.
I used her office hours many times: dont judge her by her accent, she explains great. She stays with you through thick and thin. Amazing lectures, when you discover something knew every day, but i would only recommend her for serious learner. Do no bother otherwise.
This teacher makes you work for your grade. But she is approachable and responds fast.
I would recommend Ms Podkolzina for any level of math. She taught me to love math. Her pop-up quizzes on hw are not that hard assuming you did the hw. Then you learn not to fear any tests. I took her Math 21 years ago, still remember our group and how we tackled the problems she gave us. This was fun. I would take her again in a heart beat.
Ms P is compassionate and takes time to explain things. I like her Algebra class and recommend her to all of my friends. On a negative side she uses MML , which sucks . I still like the class.
I would only recommend her for serious learners. Pls, do not text in her class. Other than that she is great
Not only is her ascent a little touch to understand, she tends to make you feel very stupid for asking help. Her online class isn't any better. She uses My Math Lab, which sucks, and she will blow you up in the online discussions sometimes. I won't ever take a class with her again. Her style of teaching sucks. Your teaching yourself, basically.
Great teacher, passionate, helpful, caring and works with students. She wants to see you win. She provides students with a tutor, handouts, ECredit opportunities, videos and even a calendar to tell you what you should be doing daily. The rest is on you. Do the hw, go to lecture, take notes and if you need more help, speak up. She is on your team!
She is a tough teacher, she's kind once you get to know her you understand the way she is. I've learned a lot about dedicating myself to a class, if you don't you will not pass her Calc 1. She's willing to stay after class and help you, and understand where your coming from. You must speak up if you don't understand or you will never understand it.
She makes you work for your grade and that's understandable. She is sweet once you get to know her and makes jokes at times. Online class consists of a lot of homework and she makes sure you stay on top of it.
I didn't like that our class was somewhat fast. She covers many things like eps-del for limits. My point is that Ms. P. is a good choice for any higher level class although she may be tough. Sometimes I was frustrated in her class, but I think she was right when challenging us from day#1. She gives you a warm-up every class which may become a qui
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. I know she is very smart but she talks to everyone like they're stupid. Will ridicule you for not knowing something or asking for help. Grading criteria made it hard to save your grade. I recommend this teacher if you're already good at math, otherwise, do yourself a favor & stay far away from her.
She gives you a lot of quizzes. I think we had like 24 or smth like this. Finally you know you learned
She is adorable and funny and I do enjoy her as a professor, but this class is too work intensive. Homework EVERY DAY and very fast paced. If you fall behind even once, you're toast. its impossible to get caught back up and if you get stuck on something, your only option is going to the math lab for help, which can be hard if you work. Hard class.
Shes probably really smart, but doesnt really seem like shes cut out for teaching. The best (math) professors are ones who clearly want to teach, but it doesnt seem like teaching was her first choice path. Shes extremely rude and blunt, and doesnt have a lot of organization. I learned nothing from her lectures.
If you have not learned a bunch from her lectures, you better go back to your high school. She is a pro and not like others. Ms P has my highest recommendations for any class you take with her
The final grade in this class rides entirely on the final exam. No matter what grade you have going into the class, if you do not receive a 50% or higher, you will "not receive a passing grade" (syllabus). The course was too fast to comprehend anything and she was quite rude throughout.
Do not take this professor! She assigns way too much work on MML & Canvas. All of her assignments are very unorganized. Her accent is very thick as well.
This professor is a real deal. She is full package as well. She has her ups and downs but she is the best if you need to learn and relearn.
I tend to agree with the previous review. She is very good in her teaching. She responds quickly, even at night. I learned a LOT. I liked how Canvas class was set up.
She was very unpredictable. I took this class online and in the summer and I had to dedicate a LOT of time to the homework and quizzes. The final is fairly easy if you do all the homework, but beware that she bases your final grade strictly on the final exam! For example, If you have an A before final, but fail the final, you will fail the class
Only class I have ever had to withdraw from. Not an inclusive learning environment. Don't take her for calculus.
This professor made me see math differently
She is good and teaches well
Warning. Do not for any reason take her class. You will 1000% regret it. She was an absolute terrible professor and did little to help her students. She was quick to belittle instead of help. If you want to succeed in Calculus, I would look for a different professor. Save yourself the pain and stress and take someone else. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Only plus is she uses an old textbook that's affordable. Calculus is a hard enough subject to learn as it is and she was all over the place in her lectures super unorganized. Lectures were useless for me and she is not very helpful if you didn't understand I would only recommend if your good at calculus because she expects you to know everything.
She is such a nice person and very educated. It can be hard to understand the topics sometimes, but you can make it easy for you if you read the chapters before attending the class. Hey guys! this is mathematics class and you have to practice and practice. she does her best and you have to! I love her personality.
Imagine being given group assignments in a math class. In DE. In week 1. Imagine a professor who is unable to answer basic questions about the subject matter she is "teaching." Imagine an "instructor" who belittles her students to make up for her shortcomings. This is the reality of Svetlana! Pro tip: If you need Differential Equations go to NVC.
I took her math20 and later Math23. Both were very good. But i write about Math20 bc this one was instrumental for everything else i learned in Math. I recall she was heavy on quizzes, but you could often improve the grade down the road. Finally , in Math23 she had like 4 of us from her previous classes. I would not tradeher for anyone else here
not a good instructor her lectures ramble on and on and is very unstructured. the tests are hard because they are completely different from what she talks about in class. personally I would recommend not taking her class.
Take. Someone. Else. Easily the worst prof at SCC.
Some profs are good if you want to learn and are willing to work hard. Some profs are good if you just need the grade and don't care about learning. Svetlana is the worst of both worlds - you won't learn anything from her and you won't get a good grade unless you can teach yourself the material. Waste of money and time!
It was a hard class. Lectures are a bit more into the theory and the why things. You can find a lot of practice on YouTube, but not the explanations and proves she gives you . A lot of things in math make sense now after her class. You are lucky if you had her.
SO. MUCH. HOMEWORK. Assigned 2 LONG homework each day and 1 quiz each week and 1 test every other week. You can imagine how overwhelming this is for someone whos full time student and worker. Heavy accent, but shes friendly. Unless you love and thrive on math, take her course and her workload.
Truly cares about seeing you do well. She emailed me to check how I was doing when I hadn't posted for a week or so due to craziness from COVID. Clear grading criteria. Expectations are outlined, the ebook through Pearson makes learning super easy. Everything is due about once a month through this ebook
Don't take this instructor. First of all, her voice is really hard to hear, even though I was on the first line tables. Secondly, she will pretend that you know everything, which means from the lower classes as well as the material before the next class. She just keeps teaching without pauses. Strongly not recommend.
She cares about math and her students.
This class was taken during the pandemic and required scheduled zoom meetings. Requires you to have read book (or have watched youtube videos) on the section that would be covered on that day's lecture. Does not allow questions to be asked during the lecture, only after lecture or during office hours.
Professor has no genuine teaching skills. Lectures are unorganized and her notes are incredibly messy and impossible to follow, which is crucial for a math class. She sends us videos to watch instead of teaching us herself. She is quick to get flustered/upset with the students when confused in class and overall I do not recommend taking this class.
I recommend using her lectures if you can make it, cause free algebra book kinda sucks. Ms.P is the best.
She was good about explaining the lectures and she would post videos to help out with lectures and homework. I like the way she does her quizzes and test. Its easy to pass her class just do all your work
Do not take her. I'm currently in an online class and it's a nightmare. I have a final next week and she still hasn't given any info on it. She takes a long time to respond, she sends too many videos and info that don't even help, and her modules are a mess. I wish I read the reviews before taking her class. The stress and annoyance is unbelievable
Watch her recordings. Her modules are Read-Watch-Practice. Sort of simple to follow. She tracks u down when necessary. Her responce time is fast. All assignments have rubrics and I know what to expect. I think she is very good.
Ms P is an excellent instructor, who is always willing to help. Pay attention , read the book and ask, ask, ask. OpenStAx book sucks big way. Her lectures in Canvas are perfect. Use them.
She knows her stuff. Her way of teaching is somewhat different from others. Get used to it and you will learn a lot. You are lucky if you had her. Do not trust the negative comments , cause you know who leaves them.
Very slight language barrier, so she comes off as abrupt, which clearly isn't for everyone. She is very caring and passionate about teaching, to the point where she'll watch you work through problems to make sure you understand. Isn't strict on grading. She also does her best to find as many good resources to help out her students as possible.
Our class had many group works. Beware she wants you to upload sometimes. Nice instructor although her grades are nonnegotiable unless you found a clear error. She listens to what-you have to say and makes corrections in class mid semester. Some say she is disorganized, but it is not true.
Ms.P was pretty laid back about our Zoom sessions. Just do what is necessary in Canvas and WebAssign and you will be fine. WA is like $30, the book is a free download. She made announcements each week wht to do with the due dates. Ms.P helped me way beyond this class. She cares about her students. Oh, and her night office hours were well populated
My experience. I picked her for two different classes. She is very nice. No problems, lots of help. Take her.
She is nice although perfection is her virtue. I recommend you to read the book and tune in for he lrecture whenever possible as shemakes math easy digestable
Her class is fairly easy if you're reviewing Algebra but if you're learning it for the first time, it would be better to find another instructor because sometimes the way she teaches isn't easy to understand. She also has an accent which may be difficult for others to comprehend and there is also a lot of homework. A lot of group work on zoom.
I took math 20 three years ago. Math21 was a breeze after her class. Her grading could have been on a softer side. Other than that she is the best trust me.
She challenges you. Read before the class and come ready.
She is unorganized, messy, and clearly does not care for her students or her job. Several students reached out to her for help but have been answered with aggressive rhetoric. Lectures are hard to understand. She does want students to pass, but clearly doesn't show care or work to make this happen. Save the units and choose any other professor.
My first day in this class had her telling me I was, "wasting my time" when I asked her to give us the material she had on screenshare when she put us in breakout rooms. We are in Zoom and life happens, and I expect to not be disrespected when I have to step out to handle family issues in class. Everything was formatted poorly, including our quiz.
She does not really stop time to answer questions that one or more individuals may have. She puts us into break out rooms and expects us to understand what is going on, but for the most part we sit there in silence. She seems like a sweet lady, but is incredibly hard to understand both verbally and through organizational mishaps.
Lectures are well planned. She grades both canvas and webassign, which I liked. Canvas assignments are the hardest. Videos are tol quality and helpful.
Class is very fast paced and can get hard to catch up on if you fall behind. She provides lots of useful resources, but also uses Webassign to assign homework, which was pricey as it was $105. Her grading is picky, and you have to thoroughly explain on how you solved each problem. Would recommend taking another prof to save money if possible.
Hardest math class I've taken and I usually like math. Her grading is super strict, her lectures aren't helpful. I fell behind at one point due to a family loss and when I notified her she didn't reply, all I got was an email saying "What could possibly go wrong and why are you not working in the class?" I do not recommend her at all.
For rating from Nov 14th, I meant to say my grade wasn't complete yet, not incomplete, cause I haven't finished the course yet. oops
SIGN UP FOR ANY OTHER professor!! From what I can see, there aren't many great professors for math 020 at Solano. Podkolzina is no exception. You know this class has a reputation when other students and tutors would share negative experiences taking this class when I asked for help. Avoid taking this class or be prepared to withdraw.
I liked the class and that we got to know each other pretty well although it was mostly online. MsPoskolzina use Canvas assignments as well as WA online home grading system, which was a bit more work to my opinion.
Not the best, but also not the worst. Really tough grader I rarely got 100% on anything. Ended zoom meeting right at 4:20 and didn't answer questions. WebAssign is the redeeming quality because the vids really help a lot. Her lectures aren't the best. lots of assignments so be aware that this class takes up time. Not the worst option.
She assigns a LOT of work. WebAssign was heavier on points than Canvas assignments. But at the end you learn a LOT. I wish she was teaching Math21, but she did not. Ask questions, she responds quickly.
This a tough class as it is . She makes it manageable . Best of all I was well prepared for Calculus after her class.
She is very argumentative and will push you to ask questions, but when you ask a question or ask for help on an in class assignment, she will say you are arguing with her and will shut down the conversation and instantly give you no credit. Her writing and class is very disorganized and she is hard to understand. Passive aggressive to say the least
She has a very thick accent which makes it very difficult to understand what she says. On top of that there were many times where she was blatantly disrespectful and rude to the students. She is horrible at giving explanations and clearly doesn't care for her students understanding. She is prone to ignoring students. Do not recommend her at all.
How dare this professor grades so poorly or teaches math when she has no degree in math?
This professor doesn't even teach, relies on other professors YouTube videos to teach. I've never heard her voice or seen her face, showing that shes never teached/helped her students and remains hidden. Her tests are nothing like the problems you practice. I've never stressed for a class like I have for this one. All good scores were probably her
Words can't describe how bad this professor is, take your math class with a different professor. YOU WILL THANK ME LATER!
There is zero learning since there is no feedback what you did wrong. All you do is waste time from tremendous amount of mechanical work of inputting in WA. Her methods of grading and learning should be audited. I am surprised she is teaching still.
Relies on youtube videos of other people teaching math. Much of the HW is through WebAssign (and costs $100 to access it) but the heavily weighted tests are on Canvas and are nothing like the structure of what is on WebAssign (which is where you get a majority of practice). I suggest finding a different teacher.
Terrible grader, can't even call her a professor or a teacher as none of the work she forces upon you are actually hers. You can write a 4 page response/solution for a question on her test (as I have), but if its not her method, be prepared for a 0. You can't even try and teach yourself, because if your method isn't hers, its wrong. Period.
Please please PLEASE do not take her class. Find literally any other professor for Math 020.Take it at another college or University if you have to. But save your money, save your time, and save your mental health and DO NOT take this class. Poor grading, her canvas assignments are nothing to the Webassign assignments, and exams could take so long.
Ms Podkolzina posts midterms in Canvas. you can treat them as take-home. Plenty of time. it becomes easier. My take is give yourself enough time for doing the test. Last minutes uploads would not cut it. She can give you a graph rather than formula. I liked most YouTube videos she posted in Canvas except James Souza . He seems to be pretty boring.
2. Unwilling to teach; assigning videos is just plain lazy. 3. Disorganized; she will hide instructions in her "not-so-good" notes. 4. Confrontational and rude; if you question her method(s). 5 In person and online tests have different requirements. 6. Refuses to answer appropriate queries; she will disregard you after you question her.
I've never felt so relieved from a class finally ending. Her tests are purposely hard because she wants you to fail. She grades so strictly because she doesn't want you to past. She wont help because "its beyond my paycheck" - Svetlana. She also wont like your method because it isn't hers and is "unnecessary", but ofc, if you dont show work, you get F
The assignments aren't clear that she uses previous lessons from other chapters to answer current chapters and does not accept anything else. Trying to succeed in this class is close to impossible she has random acts of kindness but don't count on being that person it is so very rare and far between.
Very hard to learn, be ready to teach yourself, says that she has lectures but they are all videos of other professors, so no self-made content. The Grading Criteria is not clear and is very hard to determine whether there is supposed to be an English class or Math with the amount of description required with each answer.
1 person I know got a good response and that was throughout the whole semester. Also be prepared to be in the tutoring center because even the video lectures that she posts sometimes aren't relevant to the assignment at hand
Assignments do not prepare you for the tests. Relies heavily on WebAssign to deliver most of her instruction. I would recommend you take any other Math prof at Solano.
+ Funny, Cute dog - Homework and lectures don't prepare you for the tests, Lectures are disorganized, Canvas is disorganized and the video lectures posted are often irrelevant to actual material, Often disrespectful The lectures are extremely unhelpful so prepare to study like it's a second job. Thick accent but you get used to it.
Definitely recommend a different teacher, her teaching style personally isn't for me and her online modules are completely different from her teachings. Her accent is difficult to understand and is a bit rude, she does want students to succeed but doesn't show it well. Still, choose a different teacher
Lectures are disorganized, notes and homework are disorganized, and overall material is disorganized.Has a deep accent, you can barely hear her unless you are sitting in the front row.All I have to say is find any other Math20 professor at Solano.I know there isn't many good ones on the Fairfield so take your classes in Vallejo or Vacaville if needed.
Be very wary in choosing this Professor for any Mathematics class. Her teaching style can be very difficult to get a grasp of. Her drop rate is quite jarring, as over 80% of the class dropped. She is unrelenting and can be vindictive as well, which causes tension during class. Too many red-flags to list but all I can say is beware.
If you do not walk into any course with her where you do not have preestablished knowledge, you will fail. Please file for medical accommodations thru solano as she will not care if you have to leave for medical reasons and will mark you as absent, which can cause you to be dropped.
I took Ms P class years ago and still remember calculus. She is very good.
Review College Alg/Trig for this class if you're not confident in your knowledge. She will dance over the review. She is a nice person, but not a great teacher. Make CERTAIN. You read over the sections and do some activities before the lecture or you'll be confused during the in-class lecture. The only upside would be she didn't grade/assign HW.
In her class you build a team of people who help you. She is ok if you are using the 8th ed or 6th ed Stewart . Pop-quizzes check how you did on the hw problems, tests may be challenging. Overall you will learn a bunch and feel good about yourself in Calc 2
We had good classes despite her fixation on epsilon delta proofs. All shall pass as you know it. Eventually you learn
Would make condescending comments when students would ask which hinders my learning. Her lectures are disorganized and from youtube despite it being an in person class which did not help in me learning the class at all. Unfortunately dropping this class set me back but I would prefer a professor who genuinely wants to teach and help students succeed
Rude, mean, controlling, manipulative, intimidating, and grumpy. Test questions are irrelevant to what she posts on canvas or teaches in class. Started w 35 ppl, we're down to 6 with more than half failing. Does not curve the grade either. Take her if youre good at math and can teach urself calc, other wise be prepared to drop like most ppl. WARNED
This professor is rude and manipulative. Didnt let students help each other out in class even tho she fails to make clear explanations of the concepts. Its either her way or fail, even though she doesnt teach, she posts utube vids as her lectures. Might as well be an online class. THE 5 STAR REVIEWS IS SVETLANA HERSELF TRYING TO CHANGE HER RATING
Great annotations on Canvas assignments. It helped a bunch. WebAssign was good and I liked her canvas video lectures.
Professor P. Is proving theorems and it may be difficult for some. I found her teaching style perfect thus recommend her to everyone. Sometimes she offers watching online lectures as a support and an alternative way of explaining things.
doesnt know how to teach or how the grading system works. She changed total points of given tests and didnt upload some of the quizzes we took, wasting our time. Teaches stuff that wont be on the test. will put stuff on test she didnt teach. Will have to learn by watching utube vids she has on modules. controlling and rude and doesnt help much
I believe she is on a heavy lecture side. Pay attention cause during the lecture she gives clues what is and isn't on the test that's coming. Overall she is nice and kind to say the least. I would like her to be teaching Calc2 .
This woman has some control power issue. Everything has to be done her way or she will deduct points. She's not very good at explaining a lot of things (calc is already hard) and when u dont understand her explanation, she gets upset and basically tells u to shut up. Changed points on popquizzes depending on how peaple did.
take only if youre already good and knowledgeable at math cause ull have to basically teach yourself everything. Sometimes she's alright but does a poor job at explaining things. theres also a significant language barrier. She has very strong russian accent and its hard to understand.doesnt give test reviews and test is dif from material taught
She was extremely unclear on concepts that I, and many other students, had learned before. Simple ideas were made to be much more confusing than necessary. Thick accent did not help this struggle. Would not recommend unless you are very advanced in math.
This class is an algebra class with focus on material being used in precalculus. It is very fast paced. The professor is pretty negative to the class when the class cant answer problems. Threatens to take away participation grade for the day if you cant answer problems when asked. Its almost like she tries to discipline you with math.
The lectures can be disorganized, but the professor is generally nice. Attendance is mandatory, and the textbook is used. Doing the homework and using resources like Unstuck AI really helps with the challenging tests. Overall, it's a difficult class, but manageable if you put in the work.
Her instructions are not clear and treats the class like we're supposed to already know everything she's trying to teach. You have to do everything the way she wants you to even though youre expected to learn by watching youtube videos she has on canvas. Wastes a lot of time on irrelevant material
Positive. Every class is interesting as you learn something new. Remedial test allows to replace any grade. Which is good as i screwed up test1. Group works were super hard. A lot of laugh . Highly recommend her. I feel i am ready for the next level. Negative. Too bad she is not teaching calc 2 next semester.
Ms P gave us a remedial test. It could replace any midterm score in case we needed it, otherwise she counted it as a quiz. Which was nice. She would assign a group work and then we may have a quiz the next class . Pretty obvious what to expect. Overall it was an enjoyable class.
She was horribly condescending. A student expressed their anger with the class and she lashed out at any students that gave feedback within the feedback assignments. You would ask for an explanation for a certain problem and she would not answer you and instead give you a proof for the answer for 45 minutes. Tests did not reflect homework at all.
This professor somehow makes the most simple understandable concepts take 2 hours and you'll have NO idea what the lecture was even about. If at all possible do not take this professor over anyone else. I've gone to other professors for help and I understood the concepts so quickly and easily it makes me wonder why she had such a confusing lecture.
Ms. P would belittle anybody who asked questions that she deemed "too easy" or "too stupid" to answer. She'd skip over steps in processes that required a step-by-step instruction, just expecting you to know already. The accent was also very hard to process, especially as someone with auditory processing issues. Don't recommend
Without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had, AVOID AT ALL COST. To name a few discrepancies: 1. Woefully unorganized for a math teacher 2. Required Textbook purchasing 3. Verbally announced students who failed quizzes to the whole class 4. Pop quizzes in an upper division math course 5. Rude and condescending. Avoid No matter what. DO NOT!
Good : 1) no online homework , all on paper 2) an older edition $7 textbook, she notified us early. Homework is not collected often. It is your choice you either not doing it and may fail her tests/quizzes or you do it. Nice instructor, clear lectures, canvas site has some good additional videos. I rated it as a hard class because math 23 is hard
She recommends Cohen's precalculus book, but uses an openstax. Lectures on all sections then makes you practice. Most quizzes were announced ahead of time. Overall is a good class.
Nice professor, never late, starts the lecture right away. sometimes it is hard to follow as she can go pretty fast. You need to ask her
Took her last semester. Great and funny personality but some didn't like her because of how fast she would lecture. Sometimes hard to follow, but she's receptive to questions. It wasn't so bad for myself since I took calculus before, but self-studying and practice is a MUST to do well on exams.
Interesting class, lots of work. She gave 3 midterms. Returns the tests next class.vow!. It is doable if you do your homework
AWFUL STAY AWAY DO NOT TAKE
Please whatever you do do not take her for any class ever. You will instantly regret it...trust me. I would have so much joy in my life if it wasn't for her. She made me s**cid*l. I lost all happiness and trust in human beings after meeting her
If you do the work, you will pass. I didn't have enough time for the final, that's why I got a bad grade. Besides that, the only way to fail is to not try and not be doing the work. Very few homework assignments. If you message her, she can come off very blunt and rude, but I thinks its because she's a straightforward person.
Horribly unorganized, didn't follow the calendar that SHE provided, gave random pop quizzes. Lectures are unclear, she gives handouts that are so messy theyre barely even helpful. She was also somewhat rude, would get upset whenever corrected, and had clear favorites. She was pretty generous with rounding up grades though, overall I'd say avoid her
Despite getting a C on the final, she rounded my 86% to an A. Ask questions, stay after class, do the hw. If you show her that you really want to succeed, she'll meet you in the middle & will be more forgiving with points. Tough prof, but she will award the few who work the hardest and genuinely want to learn from her. She's kinda disorganized tho.
Okay, but find someone else first. HIGHLY technical lectures. Picks RANDOM students to grade for HW and GW. She teaches like she expects you to already know what she's talking about. Can sometimes feel condescending. She does round your final grade up. Watch ALL of the YouTube videos she provides, stay after class, and talk with other students.
Nice and tough at the same time.
Do not take this class. Unless you are some algebra genius and don't mind learning the coursework on your own, you are out of luck. The quizzes and tests are nothing like the work learned in class, and she expects you to know everything beforehand. She is very blunt and rude, and to save your sanity and time, take it with another professor.
I found this class extremely frustrating. Lectures were disorganized and often drifted off-topic, with key steps skipped or written so small and fast on the board that they were hard to follow. When students asked for clarification, answers were either vague or dismissive, and office hours felt unhelpfu.
This teacher has taught me one thing, and that's how to be self-reliant. She moves so quickly and gets angry when people can't understand her accent. It's so hard to learn anything from her that I have taken it upon myself to find outside resources to learn the subject. Even in moments where I can understand her, she's so horribly disorganized.
You are very lucky to have her. My advice: take her only of you want to learn. An easy grade is not about this instructor. She teaches you to think, but this is not for everybody.
I failed her class once (my bad)and came back to her. She sticks to her calendar thus is organized and structured. Rarely .PPT-s. Have notes cause she gives pointers for quiz/tests. Her examples in class tend to be on a heavy side, but hence the homework is easy. well, sort of. I only used her office hours on Zoom and she is the nicest person.
Her Math20 was the only reason I passed Math21. Beware she is good!
This class feels like crying over your math homework as a kid with your parents at the dinner table. Professor is rude to students, has a horrible temper, and is bad at answering questions. Her lectures are really confusing and you end up having to learn the material yourself outside of class. Do not take if you value your sanity
I don't know how this prof. has so many 5 ratings, but it seems she writes most of them herself. Genuinely over half the class drops her course because it is so harsh, so if you care about your grades, take another. Algebra is my best subject, yet I still struggled to learn. It took me hours just to get the concepts down in my free time.
5-star reviews are fake. if you read them you can tell she writes them herself to change her rating LOL
This professor is awful. All the good reviews are written by herself to bring up her own ratings. There's a reason why more than half the class drops after the first week. She is incredibly rude, impatient, disorganized, and mean. She body shamed me in front of the whole class and gets mad when you make mistakes. Do not take her for your own good
Disorganized, quizzes almost every class, lectures move at a lighting pace, you will need to advocate for grade corrections. I learned that doing well meant learning from Ochem Tutor. The homework is not reflective of exams nor quizzes. Have a strong understanding of HOW to do a concept bc exams are STRESSFUL. Doing well is possible. Good luck
Please avoid this professor! Didn't stick to the provided schedule. Sometimes we had quizzes on unfinished chapters. Her lectures were very unclear/unorganized. On the tests, students had to correct her grading errors. Office hours are not helpful because she provides little to no feedback. She is very hostile and demeaning.
