Very lecture heavy. Definitely depends on if your ok with that. Does explain things well and will get mad at the class for an assignment being not done to her standards.
She belittles people in class and can be quite offensive. She spends all of class talking and then wonders why we are behind on lectures. If you email her regarding a question, once again, she will belittle you. She doesn't care about students' opinions about how she runs the course and will not change. She has been very vocal in this.
In class, Swapna laughed at how bad her rating was at the last university she taught at (on ratemyprof). She does not care what people think of her, and she will also not change, even though her teaching style is insufficient. She is not cut out to be a professor due to her lack of professionalism, communication and empathy.
She is unprofessional. Miss Swapna is an educator but stands in front of class and calls everyone racist. She told the whole class that someone had reported her and told us it's fine if we don't like the way she teaches. That information about her being reported should be between her, the student, and the student board/dean. I don't recommend her.
Take any other prof for this course if you can. She is not very personable and will blame the class for them doing poorly, when 1/5 is the class average on an assignment, maybe the explanation and instructions were poor. Every class she talks about how behind we are in lectures then proceeds to rant and have useless discussions for 45+ minutes.
Professor Swapna is a good instructor and is not afraid to call you out. She grades tough however the instructions for the assignment are posted and can be easily followed. If you can't handle critical feedback, then I suggest you take a different course. Professor Swapna can challenge you but I believe it's for the best, would take another class.
Worst professor ever. She reads from her outdated PowerPoint without providing any explanation. She laughed at the ratings and stated that she couldn't care less, showing that she will never change her teaching style. She is so awful that I wouldn't even recommend her to my worst enemy.
I am not sure if it was just this class but every assignment was an essay.
The main assignments in this class are essays she gives assignments before those that prepare you and give you feedback. She will challenge your viewpoints and give different perspective on things but I do not find her rude in doing so. I think she does what is necessary for this type of course. This course isn't for you if you cant take criticism.
I have heard somethings about this prof, but she is honestly so amazing, she was very helpful with the essay and had very good lectures. I am speaking from an online class perspective so maybe inperson is different but I would highly recommend this this prof and this class.
This class was awful. All of the assignments were essays and they were very confusing. On the first essay, she told us that many of us would to bad on it, maybe switch your assignment? Why are you setting your students up to fail? Lectures were always behind and slides were hard to follow as they had paragraph after paragraph on each slide.
The most unprofessional prof I've ever had. Doesn't know what constitutes an academic source for papers, readily takes out their anger on students in grading, and just watches youtube videos in class. No wonder she cant finish her PHD and got fired from another university.
So I was sick for two weeks. I went down bad with the flu and my whole family was bed-ridden and just overall not great. I also have health problems and I don't recover very quickly. Swapna did not give me an extension for my assignment even after I explained my situation. Then, on the last day of classes, she yelled at us about that same homework.
Was an awful class. Always getting mad and yelling at us at the front of the class about the work we had done and switched up what she wanted all the time with no notice at all. Never finished lectures and got very side tracked. Often was very rude and took her anger out on people. Has no sympathy. Highly do not suggest!
Swapna is passionate about what she teaches which makes many students dislike her, but she's there to teach. The class isn't easy, but she is very helpful if you reach out to her. Any chance I get, I will 100% take another class with her. Just be ready to read, reflect, and critically think and you can easily get a good grade with her.
Indig online with Swapna was a lot of work, but doable. There is lots of reading and sometimes the test were weird aswell. Overall very time consuming if you want to do well in the class.
the experience was not what it seemed to be. She is a really nice and was very helpful with the essay done. The material was good to learn and the readings were fine, the midterm was fine and I thought I did really good on the final but I got a 51.5%, and I did well on everything else. Im happy with the final grade but not the final
Swapna is very passionate and honest. But, lectures had too much slide reading and we were frequently behind. Students slow down the class when they resist critical thinking. Course materials were very relevant and interesting. The assignments had a clear rubric and contributed to my learning. Not a fan of writing a 4 page essay for the final.
This class requires a lot of work. Endless texts and activities that are sometimes confusing and/or unclear.
This was one of the worst experiences ive had in an intro level course. She rarely covered what was supposed to be covered in class and had hour long group convos during lectures. I highly suggest taking a different professor for INDG107.
She is blunt and only cares about what she thinks. Your opinion is invalid to her.
First assignment, she gives us a 5 question quiz marked out of 7, but is graded out of 15 for some reason. 1 question is not found on the resources she provides, and the rest are trick questions. The only short answer question was supposedly opinion based, but she then tells the class that you had to disagree with the paper... class in a nutshell
In the first class, she called us all racist. When students try and voice their concerns she will publicly shame them and make accusations that are not remotely true. She is very unprofessional and often takes her anger out on students. Swapna poorly represents Indigenous studies and the University of Saskatchewan. DO NOT take a class with her.
This is the worst professor I have ever seen, and I have seen a few. How can this person get away acting the way she does. Someone should take some video to submit to the Faculty, recommending she be removed from her position. I cannot believe she gets paid money to abuse the students like this.
Absolutely ridiculous assignments, in particular one assignment was worth 10% of our total grade with 4 multiple choice questions and one short answer. Each multiple choice question was a trick question, the short answer was graded upon whether you agreed with a statement. It was out of seven, somehow graded out of 15 for some reason. So stupid!
Her lectures slides are long, and its's hard to know the main point. Behind schedules as she uses most of her class time for discussions and critical thinking. If you missed one assignment, you will not pass the class. Didn't really like her as a prof.
unprofessional and contradictory. marked one of my assignments, left comments and said the exact opposite once in class. she takes the enjoyment out of learning and that scares me for these students future opinions of learning about indigenous issues and culture.
Genuinely considering sending a strongly worded email to the dean, questioning why they think she is a suitable professor.
Extremely unprofessional, think every student is racist, spends class time discussing personal matters or criticizing students the entire time, and spends a lot of time complaining. Most assignments are easy and the material provided helps, but it is content heavy. The lecture slides are too long and do not clarify the subject matter.
Where to even begin, I took INDG 107 with her. First assignment half of the class failed because they failed to identify the bias and racism in an academic article, it was worth 10%. She called out one student in front of the whole class with a powerpoint because he openly questioned her teaching method. Loved her classes they were entertaining...
A very tough grader!
Demanded critical thought in a way that I have never seen before. I was challenged, and I learned a lot. This course is not an easy grade, but was more engaging and enjoyable than I expected from a class with 300 students.
Before taking this class, I expected it to be hard based on all the reviews. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was better than I thought it'd be. Swapna's lectures are very insightful and I learned a lot. She encourages us to think critically. Most of the assignments were easy, as they all had something to do with one another.
PLEASE AVOID IF POSSIBLE. I actually got a decent mark in her class however because of the way she reads off slides and her professionalism while teaching was unacceptable. Because of her I do not want to take any future Indigenous courses at all.
An integral aspect of this class is to THINK CRITICALLY and Swapna encourages this. If you're being called out for being racist then YOU PROBABLY ARE. Using this class or prof to no longer want to learn about Indigenous cultures and issues ONLY PROVES IT! Not surprised by the ratings thought, this university has a lot of racist entitled students.
She always gives the same energy back and questions you inorder to get you thinking about the other side. This class has alot of emphasis on critical thinking to challenge students previous beliefs about indigenous peoples. Don't get offended when you are questioned that is part of learning how to critically think and defend your beliefs and others
Told us we can voice our opinions but to note that she'll tell us were wrong and arrogant, and that she isnt there to make us feel safe, comfortable or welcome being in her class. Got highly upset when she asked the class " who WANTS to be here vs who HAS to be here" and most students said they had to be there because it wasnt the answer she wanted
within the first class she: -called a student out in front of everyone and told her she wasn't metis because she wasn't 50/50 -said if you were raised catholic you should feel guilty -humiliated a student who answered incorrectly she'll give you a guideline for grading then doesn't follow it when she's actually grading. dropped it 2 weeks in
I sincerely think her teaching style confirms the biases of students going in with racist biases. It seems like she WANTS to make the people in her class racist so that she can call them out and feel better about herself. Totally unequipped to teach this subject matter. Wow. Easily the worst Professor I have had, and I've had a few.
Completely phoned in teaching style, TA basically taught the class. Was hard to contact in person or by email as nearly all interaction was delegated to the TA. Just say what you think she wants you to and you should pass with a decent mark. Recorded lectures were serviceable but unnecessary if you went to high school or elementary school in Canada
She is very specific on her syllabus. If you have a question avoid asking her under all circumstances because you will just be met with attitude and not even get a straight answer.
The lectures are incredibly boring and she just reads off of slides. She believes that her opinions are the only correct ones, so be prepared for her to try and humiliate you if your views don't coincide. Class attendance dropped by 50% after a few weeks
Swapna made me really dislike indg studies. She made it feel like the whole focus, grade wise, was on the mechanical aspects in a paper. Despite putting papers through the English writings help desk, the feed back she gave directly went against the feedback and suggestions from the help desk. I don't feel like she should be teaching 1st year.
She is a genuinely good prof, she does tend to read off slides however said slides are very thorough. do your reading and pay attention to the syllabus and you'll do fine. and show her respect and you'll get it back.
she's genuinely a great prof. she elaborate further on many topics to make sure you can understand and is willing to engage the class during her lectures. her main task is to get you to think critically and if you're respectful she'll show it back. her exams were more on the difficult side but nothing outrageous, she wouldn't be a bad choice.
Swapna is a great teacher who knows what she is talking about. Her lectures are packed full of information and I enjoy her confidence and matter-of-factness. She has a great personality. Assignments can be tough, especially as a first year but if you go to class and pay attention you should be fine! Theres extra credit in class sometimes.
Wasn't fantastic, was hard to contact and had little interaction throughout the class, however was very helpful when able to get in contact. Fair tests and reasonable grading on papers. Don't be a numbskull in class and be open to thinking a little about how you view things.
Little to no information on assignments, but after with bash you for not understanding and getting a bad grade. If you ask questions about an assignment she will not answer them and will tell you to look at the syllabus, yet there is little to no information on the assignment there.
Thought the reviews of the prof were exaggerating but they weren't. She does not answer questions about the assignment but explains it after we've gotten our mark back. She told us she would not be replying to emails because there were too many students and does not answer the question, tells students to look at the syllabus.
The person under me definitely did not attend the one class she spent 1 hour and 20 mins answering questions. There has been no tests so far, and she asks if anyone has questions. cheers tho.
The only way you will be able to write an essay in this class is if you write it in a racist point of view, this has been made very clear by the professor and the TA. The TA was unprofessional was demeaning to me. RUN
Put a midterm on the reading week
Had a midterm over reading week, when asked about it she said the weekend isn't part of our reading week.
First day of classes she said she reads these reviews and that she's aware of people say about her and that it's not true, that they can't handle her bluntness. In reality she asks questions that are racist and wonders why no one puts their hand up. You have to be racist to write the paper, when I asked the TA agreed.
Idk who's giving her 5/5, they must be related to her as there is no way people think that after spending a semester or even a class with her. She called us all racist and bias after the critical analysis quiz and then back tracked saying we had racist tendencies and then wonders why we're afraid to answer her questions.
Swapna was by far the best prof I had as a first year student. Made classes engaging to the best of her ability. Content is straightforward, assignemnts and midterm were a breeze. Participation makes the difference so show up and ask questions. If you are complaining about her class, you probably didnt want to be there in the first place.
Knows what she's talking about for sure, final was the hardest part about this course as it was mc only. Comprehendable Assignments, if you don't know what you are doing ... ask she makes sure you understand before submission and extends due dates! Quit looking ar all the negative comments, she's better than what everyibe portrays her to be. 10/10
The grading is overly strict in this class. In general, not a very captivating course, and it can be hard to get help on assignments and stuff. Overall, it wasn't an enjoyable learning experience at all.
Had us pay for tophat program and then told other people that they could just text in their answers and not purchase the tophat. Frustrating that she didn't tell us buying the program wasn't mandatory.
Mind numbing lectures, numerous videos to watch outside of class, and heavy reading. 200 multiple questions for final, good luck passing.
If I could rate Swapna as a zero, I would. She completely lacks professionalism and is extremely arrogant. As an Indigenous student, I believe that she represents the exact opposite of what an advocate for Indigenous Peoples should be and has made me feel ashamed and uncomfortable. Her behaviour reinforces negative stereotypes. Take HIST 195!
I don't think Swapna actually knows what Indigenous Studies is. When asking a question she said that I was a "colonizer" so I will never be able to "understand and do well in this course". Stayed late one day and witnessed her bullying a TA as well. Zero professionalism. She is verbally aggressive and tries to cover it up saying it's bluntness.
Some comments are false. Swapna didn't assign an exam over midterm break. It was assigned for after, but she opened the window so people could write during the break. For films she cancelled class because of extreme cold and gave an online film to watch, second she cancelled class to give time to work on an essay and said to watch film on our own.
All you have to do is read the ratio of good comments to bad comments and you get the picture of Swapna.
The overall experience in this class is disappointing. Lectures tend to be very boring, the material is not presented in an engaging way, and there are too many unnecessary readings. Assignments are graded way too hard, and it's difficult to get the help and guidance you need to genuinely improve.
Swapna should not be a professor. She Is an extremely tough/bias grader, she will not explain or answer any questions regarding assignments then will bash everyone for doing poorly. If you are not indigenous she calls you a colonizer to your face and is blatantly rude/racist towards you and will go against anything you say. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Her lectures are not insightful or interesting, they are mind numbing and she drones on and on. As a first year taking this class, I found it extremely difficult to have confidence in my work after Swapna repeatedly tells the class that no one ever does good and that the class average is usually a 60. Here's an idea, change your teaching methods
Communicating with her on assignment instructions was near impossible. She is teaching us about the history of discrimination yet would publicly humiliate and invalidate the students of color who contributed to class discussions. Very unprofessional. Rude and blunt and graded poorly on assignments, never answered emails and admitted that in class..
Swapna is a terrible professor, she should not be teaching a first year class. I'm in my third year and struggled, I do not recommend. She does in fact have very informational slides that help you learn about what she rambles on about. NEVER take a class with Swapna, you will regret it.
Incredibly egotistical and rude. Claimed on the first day she expected the average to be about a 60%. I got a 5 on my AP English exam, and she still tore my writing to shreds. This is a 1st year class with graduate level difficulty. If you value your sanity, I recommend taking a different prof or even a different class. PHYS115+117 was easier.
the lectures are long and boring. It feels like the only reason she teaches the class is to just push non-native students down. She will call you a colonizer, but by her standards so is she.
I would not recommend Swapna's class to any first year student, if you can take any other prof, PLEASE DO. Assigned a 2000 word essay without any example's or strong guidance and marked very harshly. Only positive is she responds to emails quickly but doesn't listen to requests and isn't very willing to help.
Swapna has a fun sense of humour & is very straightforward, which many people misinterpret as her being mean. As long as you are willing to show up, take notes, study, & have an open mind you'll be ok. She checks in with the class for feedback on her lectures & always answers questions.
She delivers her lectures in a way that shouldn't offend anyone. I did find that some of the assignments were graded harshly, but I went to her office hours and she was very nice and pretty much gave me what she was looking for. I believe she raises the bar for an East Indian Woman to dedicate her studies and career to indigenous studies.
this course was frustrating. The instructor's attitude was unprofessional; for example, when a student asked a question, she dismissed it with, “Well, you're not indigenous, so it doesn't matter.” It's insane because she's not indigenous either. Canvas was a mess, feedback was very unhelpful. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Swapna's class is not as bad as many reviews make it out to be. Her lectures are not very interesting and can be hard to follow but overall online tests are easy. The paper involved is very difficult and requires a lot of research and time. Overall Swapna does care about how students do in her class but it could be improved
Good prof, no idea why people complain.
I know that usually online classes are harder, but her online classes had us taking some quiz that was not related to anything we were learning and I did not know anything on that race and critical quiz. It seemed very bias to her own opinions. Also, it confuses me why we don't have an Indigenous person teaching this class.
A good professor, people think she is mean because she is direct and will tell you if you are wrong. Her lectures can be long and boring but going to class does make a difference. She answers emails fast and has good office hours. The race and critical thinking quiz was poor and bias. Be prepared for essay to be time consuming with lots of effort.
Swapna's lectures are long and boring. She doesn't find ways to make her lectures interesting yet still wants class discussion. Yes the midterm and final is online, but they are very hard. If you can take a different prof, do it. You wont learn anything in her course and it's incredibly difficult especially if you are in your first year.
Dr. Padmanabha gets a bad rep due to her reviews. Her lectures are insightful and passionate and as a result, many people get offended. However, she is an amazing prof who is extremely helpful towards those who ASK for help. If you ask her for clarification, she'll go above and beyond to make sure you understand what is expected of you. She's 10/10
Lectures were long and not stimulating at all. I think Swapna did her best with how large the class size was. Showing up to lectures does make a difference in understanding materials but because of how many people were in the class it was hard to ask questions. She is a hard marker and the final was extremely hard compared to other assignments
Swapna was a really engaging and passionate prof. There were 5 things we were graded on, which meant that everything was weighted heavily, so make sure you seek frequent advice from her and don't be afraid to email for feedback or set up appointments with her!! She is always willing to give detailed feedback and expand on any ideas you need help.
Professor Padmanabha is very inspiring! She is confident and loud, which is one of the big reasons she gets a lot of bad reviews but I personally found her a great prof! The lectures are informative, but the TAs grade harshly so make sure to get work checked before submitting, as she is always open to meet with people.
She was fine in my perspective honestly, but i understand why she has a lot of bad reviews.
Say what you want, Swapna's class was a mark booster, the guidance for the research paper was definitely what helped me reach a higher grade and I'm super grateful. She's also very funny and genuine, she was graceful when I missed a quiz she reopened it for me tbh with her assignments being online it made it all easier, quizzes were also super easy
Swapna is one of the worst professors I've had. In her INDG107 course, she accused me of being racist for using the word "rituals" and told me my "white colonialist views" would hurt my grade. I dropped the class after feeling belittled. The excessive workload and toxic atmosphere made my learning impossible.
She is very knowledgeable about her class and does feel strongly about what she teaches… but the assignments were not it. One assignment had next to no relation to what she was teaching and when everyone did bad she was surprised and said the average was lower than expected. Her TAS did not grade fairly and if approached about it became very snarky
The professor's teaching style wasn't effective for me. Lectures felt unnecessary as key content was better found in the textbook. Feedback in class often felt harsh, which was intimidating. While the course material was interesting, clearer expectations and a more engaging approach would improve the experience.
At least 1800 students are required to take this course annually. One incomplete assignment in this class is an auto-fail. One assignment is only accessible through a third party website that costs each student $112. That's $200000+ to this website from Usask alone. I have a suspicion that they give her a kickback. She is a scam artist. Avoid her.
I don't have one positive thing to say about this professor. Quite frankly, it would require a PhD level education to come up with answers as to how she still has a job and I'm pretty sure she has personally written all of the positive reviews on here. If you value your mental health, avoid this woman at all costs. She needs psychological help!
Her lecture slides were packed with information that she didn't even touch on. Quiz, midterm and the final were hard. The final exam was open book and even when using the textbooks, and her notes, I could not find any of the answers and had to look them up myself. The TA's marked harshly and removed more points when I questioned them.
People hate her for absolutely no reason
Really engaging and interesting lectures. People hate on her just because she is confrontational about racism and won't take any nonsense. If you're cool, you'll like her.
Genuinely awful.
she literally called campus security on her class and fled because they got into a "controversial" argument.
I swear more people fail this course than any first-year physics course! Her canvas assignments which account for 65% of the final grade have absolutely nothing to do with Indigenous studies and are hard to do well on. She admittedly said on one assignment that had many errors that she doesn't, know what was on it- ChatGPT probably made it.
She says that no one can compare their experiences to Indigenous peoples' experiences. Then, as a non-Indigenous person, she spends every class comparing her experience to Indigenous peoples'. She loves to call people racist for asking regular questions by the way.
Does not explain the assignments and grades them very harshly. Avoid her if you can! Total waste of money!!
She knows her stuff and cares about what she is teaching
Swapna is a knowledgeable professor who knows her stuff, and her lectures are not bad. However, the assignments are brutal. I have been in school for four years, and I can't imagine how people in their first year are doing in this class. She told the class, "You guys need to get your marks up," and didn't change anything or reflect.
Quizzes have nothing to do with the course content. There is nothing given to study for them and she expects you to do well going in blind.
Online quizzes that you have to do weekly has nothing to do with the lectures and does not give any outline to do better. Quizzes are tough and worth so much of your grades.
This is not a class I would recommend taking with this prof. Her lectures are a waste of time. Her assignments are long and she marks them incredibly hard. She openly tells her students that her class average is normally a 60% or lower. She is zero help with any work done in the course. I would not make my worst enmy take this class it's terrible.
Worst class I've ever taken.
the quizzes have absolutely nothing to do with the modules we learned, and she gives no details before we get to do them so you literally have go to into these quizzes blind. Every time I open canvas to do the work, I try to compose myself so I don't smack my head on the wall. Do not take this class.
i never took this class but ive never seen my friends so stressed over a class, much less an indigenous studies class. you have to spend over $100 to do the assignments just for them to be the same as the module quizzes, on top of paying tuition for the class. dont take the class and the prof, it seems like a waste of stress and money
PLEASE SAVE ME THIS FINAL IS IN PERSON HELP PLEASE HELP ME
There is zero reason a first-year Indigenous Studies class should be this difficult. The assignments have nothing to do with the lecture material and are brutally hard. I would tell you to avoid her, but it seems the University insists on allowing her to keep her job and making the class mandatory for most colleges. Pray for us.
I personally wouldn't recommend this professor. I think the other reviews give a clear picture of why
This class was so dreadful to the point where me and several other students had to report her to the dean. When many students began dropping out, she had stated that those students were racist and can't handle truths. Her lectures and assignments had no correlation and when the class average would be a 50 (it usually was) we would be scolded.
I was scared at first because of her ratings but found the class to be really interesting. There were alot of guest speakers. I was happy to have a bunch of small quizzes instead of an entire paper. They were hard but you have to follow the instructions exactly. She challenges people and some people don't like that but it was interesting for me.
Swapna cancelled many classes and her online assignments didn't correlate with the lecture material. Whenever she marked our assignments there would always be some "technical difficulties" which was so annoying. Her final exam questions were dumb. The only thing I liked about this course was the guest speakers.
There were multiple grammatical errors and many duplicate questions on the final exam. We were only told what exactly would be on the final 12 hours beforehand. The Canvas assignments were difficult, completely useless, and none of the topics they covered appeared on the final.
It is not even she is the problem but rather TAs that marked everyone so harsh for no reason. She had to go an adjust everyone's marks couple of times because the assistants gave us too bad of the marks. she is very nice as a person and the final was pretty easy.
People are very harsh on Swapna, but fail to realize that she is teaching 1000+ students. Is direct and could seem scary to first year students, but the final was easy and if you read through the assignments you can easily get a 75 or higher. As long as you do your job as a student and ask questions and go for help when you need it, you'll be ok
Hard work, some interesting stuff
I think people are too harsh on Swapna. Sure she's blunt but if you're teaching about a sensitive topic then I believe you have to be. She clearly cares about what she teaches. When I experienced mental health problems that interfered with my work she was very understanding and directed me to some resources that helped. 100% would take again
Swapna was a great professor who challenged students understanding of the world instead of sticking to a Western prairie perspective. I noticed a lot of students drop out once the topics shifted to the sensitive ones which acknowledged historical truths opposed to what was taught in previous education.
There has been a lot of 5 star reviews defending her. This is her and her TA's NOT THE STUDENTS. She is trying to keep her rating high. She was a terrible prof. The worst one I have ever had. The drop outs weren't about the content. I have taken many Indg. classes for the college of Ed. and gotten 80's-90's. The content is easy. SHE is difficult.
I will never take another class from her. Lectures do not cover any material required for tests and assignments. She says she encourages discussion, but unless your views align perfectly with her's she will shut you down. She is a very tough marker and you can lose marks over a one word difference even though it means the same thing.
It was like she bragged about the fact so many students did bad on her first assignment. Seemed rude and unhappy all the time and don't even get me started on her lectures. She'd have like paragraphs on some slides it honestly looked like she just copied and pasted off google.
