uses power point, copy notes entire class, tests are very hard, way 2 much info

he's okay. hard subject to teach.
Knows his stuff no doubt, but can't teach worth a dime. Often makes BIG mistakes in his diagrams and power point notes, and his notes are quite unclear. Use the book for help, because when you go back to read your notes, you will be very confused.
It is an info-heavy course, but that is not Dr. Gill's fault. Breaks the monotony of lectures with funny jokes, which nobody seems to get. Or else they are afraid to laugh?
He's pretty good. I would recommend taking one of his classes.
The man talks on a graduate course level on a freshman level course
The class isn't the easiest, but he knows his stuff, and is always willing to meet with you and give you help. Strongly recommend him. If the previous person thinks EAS 100, that makes me sad for them. Do they even know what graduate course is like?
If you do not understand something, see him in his office. He takes the time to explain things to students outside of class.
He is a very nice guy who likes to crack jokes to the class while showing his slide presentations. He is helpful but his tests and some of the labs are difficult. If you take him do your work and you will pass.
Class was incredibly hard. I'm an A student and I got a C. The important thing is to show up and act like you're interested. He doesn't take attendance but he does notice who's there every day. He's a great person, very understanding.
Yes, u DO have to be in class, and u DO need to study - hard. Don't leave it for just b4 the exam, it is lots to memorize all at once. But Dr. Gill is funny and approachable, always happy to help you if u don't understand. i learned a lot.
Dr. Gill is great. If you have a problem go see him - he helped me a lot. And those dark eyes
You will have carpel tunnel by the end of this course. You will need a notetaker from OSD.
i am tired of everybody talking about how hot all the other professors are in the earth science department. dr gill is the hottest by far.he has those dark eyes and skin he just drives me nuts. i can hardly concentrate in class.
Dr. Gill is hot. Plus he is a great professor
Gills class was the worst I've taken at Cal. It was by no means an introductory course. I'm an A student and was expecting rocks for jocks but his tests were extremely hard. I don't recommend the night class!
I am also an A student, and did get an A in his evening class as well. It seems that last person either isn't very good at science or gets their A's handed to them. Very helpful outside of class and just demands excellence. Nothing wrong with that.
He is so hot, but hard to pay attention to. He's very helpful but his tests are so hard. I should have had an F but he helped me out a lot!

I hated that class... I never understood what he was trying to teach and everytime I tried asking he wouldnt give you a very clear answer.. oh, and his tests are extremely HARD!
he seems like hes going to be a good teacher... hes already made me interested in Earth Science... and that takes alot... and hes really funny... so thats good
Tests are hard, but you can tell he enjoys the subject and explains it well. Also has a lot of funny although sometime corny jokes in class. Learned a lot.
350 characters just are not enough........
All I have to say is be smart. Prink off the power points before class and then write down what he is talking about. Got an A and never had to buy the book. Just pay attention.
Thus far out of Earth Science, I've learned alot but I must say, take good and detailed notes. Write down the notes beforehand from blackboard, that way you can add things onto it that he might say. Tests are easy if you study well enough for them. I just took the midterm, it was rather easy since I studied. I hope the class doesn't get harder. REMEMBER YOUR BLASTED CLICKER!!!
Dr. Gill is hillarious, but if you get into some upper level classes some things will be over your head. But if you take the time to get help from him outside of class he will go out of his way to help you. He does grade hard on tests.
Nice guy, and easy class. Pay attention, print PowerPoint before hand, and you'll be ok. Take good detailed notes and try to be in class everyday. Tests are pretty easy and labs a but challenging, but he loves to help out if you're struggling. :)
Great sense of humor makes all the difference. Material is sometimes challenging, and labs aren't that easy, but if you go to class every day and study before tests, then you should be just fine. He's the best teacher I've had. He knows what he's talking about and makes the subject matter interesting. And he always has something funny to say :)
Arrogant Jerk!
Dr. Gill definitely challanges his students, but not to an impossible point. Exams r a bit challanging, but if u take time to go over the BB notes(big asset cause they're online, don't have to hand write them) and skim through the text, u should do pretty well. Quizzes r very challanging, more so than the exams maybe. Last 2 labs are hard too.
Dr. Gill is the best professor I have had so far. He is very funny and always has something to say if your are having trouble. Tests are challenging and so are the quizzes. The last two labs were hard too. But if you study well and pay attention along with going to class you should do fine.

Very passionate about what he teaches. Really seems to know and understand what he is teaching. Def. recommend this prof.

Gill does not know too much about Oceanography. He just gives you notes from powerpoint every day, all semester long. The tests are pretty hard. If possible, take someone else.
He can't teach. He should go back to Canada!! Just because you have a PhD you don't need to show it off by confusing the**** out of his students. HE STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sucked ass. Gill is a terrible professor. He posts quizzes on blackboard and likes to switch the date that they are due around a lot, so you just never quite know when you're supposed to complete it by. The tests are horrible, and the material on the test is nothing you learn in class. Avoid taking this class with this horribke man.

not very easy
Alot of writting! But if you don't want to write you can print off all the notes off of Blackboard. This is a boreing class but Gill is a cool guy and explains things to better understand it. If he taught more intro class's I would take more with him.
Just awful
Horrible. Just because I am a geology major doesn't mean he can treat me like he does. He's pretty hot though.
Hes actually a really good prof. Hes very smart and will try to help you in any way that he can. Although he seems rather intimadating dont be afraid to ask for help. His test are very challenging though, and online quizes are even harder. Take good notes, and come to class regularly. He keeps an eye on it
He is very smart and tests are really hard. the class is curved tho. I failed all 3 midterms and finished with a 66% but with the curve was a C+. the class is actually interesting and he is an all out great guy. if u want to learn take this class, or if u want to just get an easy A then dont, but its your money remember, and hes worth it.
Frustrating for an intro class because he expected both good understanding of big concepts, retention of previous material, AND petty details. Tests were impossibly confusing.
Very helpful and knowledgeable about the material and follows the sylabus pretty well. He does challenge his students but if they are having trouble, he is there to help.He cares about how his students are doing.
IMPOSSIBLE
Nice guy. Not really interested in Earth Science so I thought the class was pretty boring but he gives you lots of ways to get bonus points like clicker questions and weekly quizzes but he lets you use the book for that one and you can take it over and over until you get all the questions right.
dont walk in front of the projector
execlent
Seems like a funny guy, but its like he gets off on scaring freshmen. God, get a life. Kind of obnoxious.
YOU WILL DEFINATELY FAIL. WHATEVER YOU DO DONT WALK IN FRONT OF THE PROJECTOR OR TEXT OR BE ON YOUR CELL PHONE OR YOU WILL DEFINATELY GET KICKED OUT OF CLASS HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER YOU WILL NEVER PASS THIS CLASS SO IF YOU SMART YOU MIGHT JUST WANNA DROP THAT CLASS NOW UNLESS YOU WANT A FAILING GRADE!!! PS THE TEST ARE VERY EASY........NOT!!!!!!!!
This guy really SUCKS, PERIOD! He also needs to cut his disgusting mop of hair! And, what is up with that stupid clicker he makes us buy! The thing never works and when you ask him about it, he does nothing to help you. Totally bias towards Metrology students, says some pretty mean things to students, and thinks pretty highly of himself. AVOID HIM!
Brutal prof. He spends more time playing video games and "fooling around" then doing work that he should be doing. My recommendation is to stay away from him at all costs. Not worth the money to take a class with him only to have him not be willing to help you and do lousy in. Nuff said.
This is a fairly demanding class, but Dr. Gill has the greatest sense of humor! The tests can be long, and you should definitely study for them, but the online quizzes and in-class labs, and clicker points (for coming to class) always help you keep your grade up. He curves the class grades more than he lets on too. Don't be afraid to ask questions,
LOL LOL LOL to previous comment.. .you were texting, phoning and being an ass in class, and you are upset for getting kicked out??? Dr. Gill expects you to be in class to learn, not goof around. He's hard, but fair. If you want to yap on the phone, drop out of college.
Some of these comments make me laugh because his class was ridiculously easy. If you read the Powerpoint lectures (they're on Blackboard, so you don't even have to go to class all of the time - I hardly ever went) take the quizzes online, and show up to take the test, you'll do fine.
If you study alot and do the assignments you should get a decent grade. Its not a blow off class you have to study to do good and he is a nice guy unless your disrespectful.
He can make all of the excuses he wants, he pretty much tells you in his sylabus that your the idiot and he does nothing wrong. He leaves NO room for error however, he was the one always screwing up. If he would get off his butt and stop playing video games, maybe he would have remembered to bring the right test to class. What a jerk.
I heard this guy is rediculous before I even took the class, but me being the know it all that I am decided to go ahead and do it. He definately made my life a living hell. First D I've ever had in my four years of college. JERK. Oh, and he yells at people for walking in front of the projector...hes the jerk making a big deal and interuppting class
He would do things like not announce stuff in class or not put it on blackboard. He thought he was being tricky. what a geek. And this guy knows random peoples names...probably a facebook stalker. He was always screwing up, but he expects perfection out of his students. Hes the kinda guy that probably comes on here and rates himself.
Class was hard! You really do have to put a lot of time into thise course! Gill will help you anyway he can. I studied my ass off for his exams and never faired better than a b- on his exams. Tests are hard, but course has 5 labs and 10 online quizzes that boost your grade. I recommend him, this is one class i actually learned something.
Hi. I'm a senior. This past sememster my grades were as followed: Macro- A, Sign Language- A, Research- A, Social Change- A, Earth Science- D. This guy has seriously screwed my GPA. Worst teach EVER
WOW. These comments are ridiculous. His class is not that hard. There are 10 online tests that you can take as many times as you want. I only study the night before for the test and still manage to get at least a low B on them(tests are curved).BTW, I like his sense of humor.

he is really nice and helpful but his exams are sooo hard. study hard and make note cards
Very good professor. Attendance isn't counted for points but if you want to do well I suggest going to as many classes as possible. If you put in a little effort before the tests there is no reason not to do well in the class. Highly recommend.
Dr. Gill's class, while at times dry, was entertaining. He knows how to joke and not to take himself too seriously. Best thing you can do is show up and review the study guide prior to the test. One word of advice, don't have your phone out and don't walk in front of him if you come in late, he will kick you out of class.
He was awesome. He had a joke for everything. When I become a teacher I want to be just like him.
Dr. Gill is not as hard as people make him out to be. He certainly challenges you on exams, but you learn a lot in his class. If you study, you'll be fine. Also, not to mention, he has a good sense of humor.
I can't believe no one's said he's hott yet. I have him now and the man is GORGEOUS. As for the people who say the tests are hard, I kind of wonder how they got this far in life. Its a college course but I think its one of the easier courses I've taken in that the material is straight forward. The only way you dont get it is if you dont come to cla
He is good.
Great class!
Great teacher! good class .
Best professor Ive had so far at Cal. He makes class interesting with little jokes but you can tell he knows what he is talking about. The exams are hard unless you spend a long time study, or just like the subject. The labs and online quizzes def. help your grade though. He is very friendly and a good prof and person.
Definitely knows what he is talking about. Very good professor and very knowledgeable. Only downfall is that his tests are the hardest I've ever taken and unless you devote hours upon hours to study for them, you WILL NOT pass them. His on-line quizzes and labs do help your grade a little though.
He is honestly a very good teacher. I will admit, his tests are very VERY difficult, but I'm usually a B student and I received an A in this class. The main thing I can say is that you really do have to READ THE CHAPTERS and fully comprehend what you read. and make sure you attend class, because his clicker points really add up.
Don't take this professor unless you really like science. Yes, he knows what he is talking about, but for us non-science majors, we need explanation in leymans terms. He's also really boring. I was told to take this class with another professor and I wish I would have listened. You need to study a lot for his tests. This isnt a blow off gen ed.
If you're not a science major, you'll hate his class. Worst, most unhelpful professor I've ever had. Some of us wonder why he still has a job.. but then we realize he curves so much that he probably has to do that in order to keep it. impossible class. don't take him. makes you buy a stupid $50 clicker too. waste of time and money.
VERY smart man, knows his matieral..cannot teach others who are just taking it as a gen. ed. His curves are what saved me from the class..
This man is very smart however his ability to teach others is basically non existing. He is very rude when you ask questions and isn't exactly nice all around his class is nice and you do learn a lot but he isn't a good teacher at all
While Professor Gill is a relatively likable guy, I would not recommend his class. This is NOT a blow off GenEd. He doesn't care about attendance, but you have to show up if you want a chance at passing the course.
It was an interesting class.
He had a good sense of humor and treated people fairly. He, like most professors, expect college students to act like adults and put some time into your classes. Also, he wasn't bad to look at.
Coming from a man who has no interest in Earth Science, this class was fantastic. It is by no means easy, but Dr. Gill keeps the class focused and interesting through humor, while explaining the material excellently. It is by no means an easy class, but it was definitely a good one.
Dr. Gill is an awesome professor. His class is not simple by any means. He does not expect you to always be in class, but in order to pass his tests, I recommend it. He is very fair and is eager to help those who address their struggles early on in the course. Use the book! It helps tremedously. Overall, a great professor.
He is a very good teacher, but his class is a little hard! We used the book a lot, and it is very helpfull for the tests because the notes are not enough if you want to do good. It is a very interesting class where you can learn a lot.
Dr. Gill is so HOT!
Seriously, this guy is impossible. His tests make no sense at all. He basically makes students feel stupid compared to him. He thinks he is amazing because he knows about the weather. However, i really dont care, do not take this professor if you want to take this class,
Prof Gill is hands down the best teacher I've ever had. His class isn't an easy A, but his humor makes the class interesting. He is also very friendly and will always stop and chat if he sees you outside the classroom. As for the class, it is obvious he knows what he is talking about and is passionate about it. If you don't understand something, ask
Dr Gill is a very humorous teacher however it is a very hard course. Attendance is not requird but in order to succeed you should attend.
Science is my least favorite subject, but Dr. Gill made the lectures funny and kept it rolling. Taking notes just by copying the powerpoint will not do it, write down explanations when he talks about each point. When you have a question or need extra help he makes it his priority to help you, as long as you go for the help.
His tests are extremely difficult, but he goes pretty in depth while presenting his power points. He definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to teaching, and is able to answer any question you have.
Keeps the class interesting. Funny and nice guy. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to go to class to pass. No phones in this class. I would recommend.
Well structured class. Uses humor to keep things interesting. Laid back.
Test are all in class and VERY challenging. Other then the test he is a great guy keeps class fun and fresh. If your looking for a gen-ed to just get by this is not the class for you. He wants to challenge your learning skills and make you a better student (nothing wrong with that!).
Some of the hardest tests I have ever taken. They are all in class. Make sure you get 100% on all the online quizzes and labs. Take the labs seriously. Go to class. There are points for questions he asks in class. You can get 5% total grade bonus for the in class questions. Take notes and most classes are 8 or 9am so bring a coffee .
Dr. Gill is needlessly rude & crams way too much information into a 100 level course. He introduces himself as a challenging professor at the beginning of the semester & he stands by that. He makes inappropriate joke references, and makes the course harder than it should be. He comes across as superior during class & makes students feel dumb.
Some people on here don't find Dr Gills sense of humor to be funny.. but i find it to be the only thing that keeps me awake in his class! You must go to class to pass tests. Yes, he puts the power points on D2L, But that is not enough to pass his tests. He is an extremely hard grader. Don't get on his bad side. No phones
If I had more than 350 characters I'd say much more, but here it goes. Dr. Gill is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He is arrogant, inappropriate, & does not "teach." The exams are ridiculous (coming from the girl who made 73 flashcards, studied for hours, & still got a 60 on the exam.) Save yourself the stress & tears, don't take this!
He loves the subjects he teaches, but he loves them so much that it makes a level 100 class very difficult for other majors to do well in. He gives tons of bonus from participation and the labs are usually fun, but everyone I know who took the class received a C or lower on his exams. He is funny, but he expects a lot for 100 level class.
This teacher was young at the time and expected students to do graduate work at an undergraduate level period. You cant expect people to write 30 page paper research like book writers. thank god I have books out period to prove them wrong!!!
Not very understanding. Almost failed what should be a basic class. Nothing he teaches is on his tests.
He doesn't like to help!!!! Barely knows what he is teaching half the time . Pick a different professor. He has to alter the grading scale to the point that a 56% is considered an A . Terrible!!!! And faulty doesn't listen to students when they complain about how difficult or isn't helpful he is. ITS AN INTRO CLASS!!
This class is the worst if you don't like science. Even if you are a science major it's still hard. He doesn't teach the material on his tests, and just expects you to know as much as he does about the subject- in an INTRO class. He can be funny at times but that doesn't make up for his terrible attitude towards helping students and crazy hard test
does a very poor job of explaining things, material and exams are a lot harder than just a gen ed/100 level class, nobody that i talked to got above a 54% on any 4 of the exams, unless you do very well on all of the labs you will not pass, overall if you can get another prof for this class, do it
Incredibly tough grader. If you want an A, you have to work incredibly hard. Be sure to always attend class. Very lecture heavy and plenty of hand-numbing note-taking. A nice person outside of class - very strict and semi-rude when it comes to assignments.
It seems like he only likes you if you like star trek. Frequently gets off subject to talk about his own experiences, opinions, etc. Extremely tough grader; almost feels like nothing is good enough for him. Some of my classmates struggled much more than I did.
If you have ever watched paint dry then you know what its like sitting through his class, the man has the most depressing, boring tone i have ever heard
Definitely avoid taking physics with Dr. Gill. He doesn't know how to teach physics, and even said he would have to teach himself as he teaches us. Contradicts himself constantly and likes to use "big words" to sound smart when in reality, what he says doesn't make any sense.
He's not very approachable, and on occasion would belittle students when they didn't meet expectations. He DOES use respondus lock down browser, which frankly is an invasion of privacy- among other issues. He expects too much out of his 100 level classes, I would not recommend this unless it is a major requirement.
The worst professor that I have had at the university. Incredibly tough grader on labs and exams. Will not work with you or hear you out on issues with grading. He doesn't lecture or explain class concept, just does practice problems that even he can't complete correctly. Class average on the final was around a 30 percent and refused to curve.
The entire class is just lectures and straight from his slideshow so going is not that helpful. The textbook is not needed because his slides cover everything that is said in it. His tests are on paper and are about things we never talked about, the average was below 50 percent.
Dr. Gill was the kind of professor that does not have a desire for you to succeed. He moved very quickly through the material of this intro class, did not take time to explain things, and inserted his political opinion. He was not a professor that I felt was 'on my side' or that took the time to help students succeed.
Overall he is a good person and he is funny and makes me laugh sometimes, the only issue I have is there are so many slides that he goes through during 1 lecture for an intro class. You never know what is really going to be on the test because he goes over 450 slides in like 2-3 weeks so you never really know what to study. He is very nice though.
Would not recommend him for a GenEd. I have a 4.0 so I work hard. Each test in Climate Change I had me in literal tears. Only 3 tests, discussion boards, and a final project. Does not offer bonus. Tests will include questions of the most MINUTE details. Lectures read from the slides. A huge final project and presentation is not a 1000 class level.
What can I even say about swarn? I wouldn't take his classes if given the chance. You could probably pay me thousands of dollars, and I still wouldn't take one. He says he cares, he is lying. I can't even suggest you pay attention, because he does not test on lecture material. My advice is to drop his class asap.
