One of the best teachers I ever had. Great and challenging class.
Tough but you will enjoy the class...and will learn MLA well!
very cool teacher. her enthusiasm keeps the class from being too boring.
as good as they come...but there is something strange about her...
Tough class!Alot of essays, but you'll be a better writer . -Very libral also!
AWESOME! Take her! Challenging but very flexible on grading.
Sydney is a great teacher. She loves her students and her job. She is open to all ideas and doesn't ever grade you down for having your own opinions or ideas.
best english teacher I have ever had. Makes the class fun-the essays are challenging but very rewarding in the end. I learned a lot and realized that I can write well. Do the work, visit during her office hours for help and the class is much easier.
So nice and so helpful! Just put in a little effort and show up to class and it will be the best English class you've ever taken! Such a fun teacher!
Great teacher! My favorite english teacher yet. Challenging yet rewarding class. I got an A and i usually don't like writing!
Sydney is a great teacher. She really cares about the students, and makes an effort to get to know everyone. She has great ideas, but is also open to new ideas. I learned a lot from her, not only about english, but also about life. Thanks Sydney!!!
Very nice, entertaining and cute. Inspiring creative writing teacher. I always looked forward to her class.
sydney is one of the best teachers at grossmont. her classes are fun; she is open minded and cares deeply for her students!!! TAKE THE CLASS
I really enjoyed this class. She teaches you a lot writing and can help you become a better writer. She is libral but won't grade you down for expressing your own ideas. Overall, i actually wanted to put a lot of effort in this class. Finished with a B+.
Nice but very hard. Class will not help people that want to write college paper. The class seems like a personl growth class. Allot of personal papers not academic papers.
Class starts out easy but then gets harder. Only the first two essays were personal and we've done four since then that are more academic. If you go to her office for help it make a big difference.
Sydney's awesome. Fun, helpful, creative. Definately take her if you can!

A great experience.
One of the most rewarding classes I've taken. I adore Sydney. She's funny, intelligent, caring, helpful, etc. I actually looked forward to her class every week.
This is an advanced writing class. She give you all the tools to succeed. If you use them, you will.Only bad comments=the unintelligable ones. These students obviously have writing issues to start with.Excellent teacher.First paper:C-.Overall grade:A.:)
I noticed none of her lit students posted anything. I just want to say her class was cool, and easy. At first it seemed like alot of work, but really it's just some easy points. As long as you turn all your work in you'll pass. And her lectures are fun.
This is a horrible teacher. She is not helpful at all. There are so many other English teachers that are much better. I strongly recommend that you do not take this class.
I took the 8 week 124 and although it was never boring, it moved a little too fast. There's alot to cover in class, so go to her office if you need extra help. I did and pulled a B off (and I'm usually a C student). Sydney is fun.
AWESOME TEACHER, VERY HELPFUL...SHE ALWAYS TRIES TO MAKE THE CLASS FUN AND INTERESTING. VERY INSPIRING...
Great teacher, she is hard but will help you immensely if you ask. I enjoyed going to her class and she is very friendly and down to earth. Definitely take her and don't be afraid to ask for help.
She is by far the best English teacher I have ever had. She is very helpful and wants everyone to succeed. She relates with students well and genuinely cares for every person. She is awesome.
Sydney is down to earth, funny, and interesting. Her class is not boring like most english courses. In class you watch movies, read short stories, write journals, and work on six different essays. Also, she is willing to help you one on one with work.
Everyone should take this professor. Beautiful person. Only wants her students to grasp and succeed.
a very help teacher, but a little bit hard on grading. funny and the class time goes fast, intelligent teacher and i looking forward to take her for eng 120 in the fall.
Quotes Adaptation in her syllabus. Brings in mountains of books for sharing. Is accomodating in the most fundamental ways (that most teachers seem to forget about). Absurdly knowledgeable, generous, hilarious, & unconventional. You'll never want to miss Sydney's class.

She is a very good English teacher. She expects a lot from you but mostly to be as creative as possible. She abandons any style of writing that you were taught in high school and teaches you to be more creative rather than structurized. Give interesting stuff to read and write about.
Do not take her class!!!!!!!!!!!!
She's a really good english teacher and focuses on writing real papers without a lot of BS. She's pretty fun in class and tells a lot of jokes. She's also very leniant, she doesn't make a big deal out of being late and if you need more time, just ask her and she'll give you more time.
She is funny and her story is fun.But she doesn't teach you anything. Mostly, she just give you some group works.I didn't learn anything from her.I got A though:p This teacher is too easy. So If you want to challenge, i don't recommend her class.
Best English teacher I have ever had, and I have had some good ones. All she expects from you is to make a solid attempt and be honest in your writing. She will make you feel confident in your writing ability.
Sydney is an example of what every college professor should be like. It is apparent that she loves teaching and her students. She is very down to earth and intelligent. There is a lot to learn from her if you want to better your writing skills. Not an easy class but an enjoyable one.
Probably my best teacher ever. ABSOLUTELY take her class if you love writing and want to improve or want ideas on prompts. Put in the effort and your grade will reflect it.
Sydney is by far the best English teacher I have ever had. It is disappointing that every teacher, or even half of the teachers on college campuses aren't like her. She has a true love for teaching and her students. To prove my point, I'm taking a class with her enxt semester.
She is a great teacher. She assigns interesting topics, lenient, easy going, young, funny, really down to earth. you do about 4 big essays, 4 reading responses and your mide-term and final are an in class essay. Not a hard class I got an A.
Great teacher. class was suprisingly not too boring. enjoyed the semester.
Syd was very clear on treating her students as adults. I enjoyed each lecture, and felt my writing improve. She challenged the class to try styles they were not used to. TAKE HER BLOODY CLASS!
Her stories were funny and class was ...kinda fun. But she doesn't teach you anything, She always did same things. I think she didn't prepared for a class well.
She is a great teacher. I've had her for two semesters now and I love how personable she is and very thorough. Though she sometimes assigns the same stuff to do she gives you a lo of freedom to write about what ever and how ever to want. I highly recommend her for any English level.
I find it interesting to note the goobers who claim to have had a less than satisfactory experience in this class have the grammar of third graders (chock that up to poor listening skills). The thing to note about success in this class: You have to engage yourself in the material. I loved it!
Sydney is the greatest teacher I have had yet in college. She is so helpful and works with you when it comes to essays and such. very funny lady in class always making jokes. I would recommend Sydney to anyone any day of the week. english is not for me but sydney made it fun :-)
Tough class. Bold personality. Good teaching.
She cancelled at least 6 classes in this semester. 4 classes are watching movies. Very easy to talk to and super friendly. You don't have to speak up in the class to get participation points. Offer 30 points extra credit which is great!
Anyone who doesn't agree that Sydney is doing something special with her classes ought to be thrown into the Shark Encounter at Sea World. Wise up. She cares about you and she cares about what she's teaching.
She is a wonderful, cool and fun teacher. I love everything about her including her Betty Paige hair cut. Her class was very easy. She is very undersanding and easy with giving extentions. So cool you'll wanna take her to the bar and have a drink. Probably the best Advanced Comp class you could take at Grossmont. Stay away from Roxann Dapper.
Best English class I've taken, and I'm usually very bored in English classes. Sydney is very helpful and clear. There are two graded in class essay(one done on finals day), so be ready for that. We watched two films. Hard but fair grader. Go to peer workshops, even if you don't have finished paper!!!

I chose this professor based on ratemyprofessors.com. I am a little dissapointed because she doesn't clearly explain assignments untill after you do them. And beyond that the things she gives us to read and discuss in class are so political. That makes it really difficult if you couldn't care less about politics. I realize that it is because it can be used for critical thinking. but at least she could chose better writers for us to learn from.
Sydney is an amazing female and an equally amazing teacher. She is one of the most fresh, fun, and inspirational teachers I have ever encountered as a student. I recommend her highly if you are open to new ideas, perspectives, and honest writing.
Keep in mind, the ancient Greeks had a word for those not involved in politics: Idiota. And today we use a word taken from that word -- idiot. So, do you think maybe that has something to say about you if you are not involved? Syndey is a great professor. Funny and cute and VERY fair. And I will probably make a B, too. So, unbiased opinion here
as you progress through sydney's class, she becomes more like a friend than a teacher. she makes herself available all the time whether it's to help out with an assignment, lend you a book or movie, or just to chat about whatever. oh yes, she does not like to be called "professor" at all. just "sydney" is what she likes.
I hate this teacher!!!
She can be nice, but also very mean and go beyond her boundaries as a professor...she has favorites of course from her creative class. I really disliked this teacher. She helped me out in a paper and critized it until no more and then still fail me from the class.
Strangely, she makes you feel like you're actually in college and she's really funny. Hard class, but in the end you feel like you've accomplished something. Rare.
i've had two english profs before Sydney, both of which made me feel stupid. Sydney was a relief. honestly, one of the best. creative, brilliant, and funny she is as complete a person as one can be. the assignments are fun and she is gracious with time. the only class i have looked forward to attending.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! I REPEAT ... DO NOT TAKE HER. All she ever talks about are movies and books. She gives way too much homework and expects way to much out of her students. I WAS an English major until I took her. She makes you feel like you are worthless & don't know how to write a paper.
She is a GOOD teacher, but definately not an easy A. You better hope to study hard for her class or else don't bother. If you are serious to learn, she is the teacher for you. =)
Sydney kinda reminds me of Velma Dinkley from Scooby Doo, if only she said jinkies once in awhile, ho hum.
I liked going to this class. Sydney expects alot, but will work with you. I wish more teachers were as human as her.
Sydney is the best! I loved her so much I took her twice. You have to earn your grade. She is very helpful. She gives interesting topics to write about. Just do your work and you will do well!
Sydney is a fantastic instructor. If you are absent often or do not complete your homework, you will recieve an appropriate grade. She comes on very strong but is very intelligent in regards to her profession. Awesome
I absolutely loved this class. This was my first "creative" english class of any sort, and was an enlightening experience. She gives assignments that are fun to tackle, and teaches in a peer-oriented manner. She's hip, down to earth, open, and understanding. And lovely. Le sigh. I felt intimidated, surrounded by such talent, but she makes it work.
Great teacher! I am an int'l student, and I am getting either A's or B's. She gives you the chance to revise your essays except the midterm and final. You have a couple of take home quizes. And she is funny, modern, and very nice. Just do your work, do your best and you will receive a grade no lower than a B.
She expects her students to keep up on all assigned work. She is lenient on deadlines IF you communicate with her. She takes a real interest in her students' lives, just try not to do a lot of complaining. It's not too hard to please her. I still keep in contact with her and she is very knowledgable about Professors at SDSU.
She's nice and funny. She is helpful and you can always go to her office hours if you need extra help. Her class is the first time that I've actually enjoyed an english class, but the last paper really has no place in an english class, it should be in my POSC class. Easy work, attendance is important but not THAT important.
Initial writing sample promp is Theodore Kaczynski's "Manifesto," She encourages, unfairly, the religious tone of her students. Is a speaker for MADD & against abortion. Qualities don't deter from recognizing abilities as a writer. She's more than fair, worthy. Older readmits beware of the lack of incentive of young generation, have a thick skin.
Mrs. Brown makes sure that voices on both sides of an argument are heard (especially ones traditionally made to feel like outsiders in college). She plays devil's advocate alot. I'm not sure where she stands on abortion and MADD, but she seemed pretty liberal to me. Class is fun.
I love this redheaded beauty.
One of the best english teachers I've ever had, that's saying a lot in itself. Wonderfully funny, creative and a general pleasure to be around. Has great taste and offers a very balanced view on all subjects. Anyone looking to take Creative Writing with her should go for it, I was reluctant at first but haven't encountered a class like hers yet.
I liked this class. Papers are difficult but class discussion was fun. She has a strange sense of humor and lets certain people talk too much.
if youre going to take this class, be sure to make the the last class of your day because she has a tendency to cancel class a lot! other than that she's pretty cool!
I took several classes with Sydney, she wants you o get your stuff done, but that is all really. Great teacher.
I took her for creative writing and I loved it. She is extremely helpful and fun. assignments are interesting and fun. You have to read you work in small group workshops. She doesnt grade your work, everything is done on a contract. if you want an A you must do a 8-12 page paper. attendance is mandatory for your grade but she misses class a lot.
Sydney is the best English teacher I have had at Grossmont. Her class is fun to go to and her assignments are reasonable. She actually grades on content/ideas and not so much punctuation. I would recommend her to anyone. Too bad she won't be back in the fall for 124. ):
She is a fair grader. Her assignments were not hard at all. I took her 8-week class and pulled off an A. I like her and she was one of my favorite English teachers.
i really enjoyed this class. the assignments were challenging without being frustrating and she's open to you coming down to the office if you want to work on something. i think i improved as a writer as a result of taking class with her. only downsides are the 8-10 page paper you have to write if you want an A, and she's absent quite a bit.
Currently taking her for summer and so far I love her class. Before this, I hated English but now I actually enjoy attending every class and writing every paper. I'm taking a 6 week course so it's a bit tough so far, but I'm still hanging on with an A so far. Excellent teacher, funny, simply as good as an English teacher can get.
I dreaded Engl during my first year in college so I never took it. I am so glad she is teaching this class. There is work due each day (took during summer) and you get to revise half of the essays. Quizzes are usually done as a group or take home. She's very easy going, fun, she's excited about what she does. Keep up on the work and you'll get an A
Sydney is one of the best professors ever! I was surprised at how much I learned - and retained - in her class. She's easygoing and makes class fun. She's professional, yet the type of professor you'd like to be friends with outside of school. Loved her class!
I would reccomend that you take her class in the after another in the morning, she's hardly ever there and class is cancelled frequently. Other than that she's an okay professor.
Great class and teacher. Easily one of the most valuable courses I've taken at Grossmont.
Love her!
The short term 8 week class was a PAIN, but she took out 1 assignment because we didn't have time for it. She is more interested in well rounded THOUGHTS and CONCEPTS rather than technical organization. Short term is VERY fast - only take it if you are able to keep up! Take her - she is awesome!
Could I love her more? No, I could not.
she was one of the best teachers that i have ever had. she has very easy to schedule office hours. and she gets sick a lot so you will get to skip class some.
One word: awesome. She's the funniest, friendliest, hip, down-to-earth professor of all time. Her class was by far my favorite this semester. She's really considerate too and understands student's circumstances and is really encouraging. I hate creative writing, but I'm still going to take it this fall just because that's how awesome she is.
She has canceled too many lectures this semester....but I enjoyed her talking when she showed up class!I wish she did not get sick very often so that I could learn more from her. She is very understandable about your own circumstances and funny, too!
Very cool teacher. You learn a lot from her she is into rock, movies, and books. You will enjoy going to class. Oh by the way she gets sick a lot, so you probably won't see her that often.
She's not absent THAT much. She only missed like once class for sickness and then dismissed it early another day. The rest of the free days were already scheduled. Cool lady. I couldn't believe she was 43.
That's what I said in the beginning later it started to get worse with the absences, just wait!
Fun, clear, very interesting. I enjoyed sitting in her class for discussion. Very reasonable and understanding. Understands that students do have lives outside school as well and stuff does come up sometimes. Great teacher. Always has a smile on her face :)
Very down to earth teacher, sweet, understanding, always willing to listen to students' concerns. She does have allergies so she was absent a few times, but she is a great instructor. She made me love English. Not too much reading either!
I absolutley loved this class and this teacher. I took the 8 week course, which was challenging, but in a good way. I learned a lot, and she always made the class fun and interesting! She genuinlly cares about her students opinions and values. She is tough, prepare to work hard, but you will be rewarded!
I'm not a huge fan of English but this lady is cool. I turned in a number of things late and she didn't freak out. Additionally I typically encounter a lot of liberal fanaticism from English professors, but Brown doesn't interject too much of that and is open opposing views. Fun teacher and knows her shht.
Amazingly amazing. Took this class to avoid regular English, but immediately afterward I changed my major from Physics to Creative Writing. Completely unconventional class with no real rules or guidelines. Deadlines are the only active hold put on students, other than that just be yourself and 'make it new'.
All the great comments about this woman is false. She has no compassion for teaching and is very lazy. She never gives work back on time. Don't take her.
To call this teacher lackadaisical, apathetic, or shiftless would be an insult to all the lazy people in the world. She could never return assignments on time, would forget office appointments made with students, and just didn't care. If you do take her class Never disagree with her, keep your mouth shut and don't voice your opinion
Seriously, I didn't learn a thing in this class! She is very close-minded and lazy. She would assign work or readings that are irrelevant and are a waste of time. She doesn't care about her students at all. I have come to her office for help and it was useless. She would glance over my work real quick and rush me out! Seriously, don't take her.
She is the absolute BEST professor I have EVER had, hands down. I took this class several years ago and I always meant to leave a rating but never got around to it. The class was wonderful and guided me to write in ways I wouldn't have come up with on my own. Sydney was so helpful and inspiring both inside and outside of class, I love her!
To add to my last comment: I also recommended her to my brother, and he took 2 classes with her, and he also says she is his favorite professor ever! So take her if you get the chance to :)
Dont always use the book, so if you cannot afford it, there are alternatives. Ms. Brown obviously loves to write and she is extremely helpful when it comes to assisting student in their creative writing.
I know the odds of Sydney reading this are slim, so i shall be completely honest here. Sydney cannot truly be reduced to numbers ona 1-5 scale. She is more than just an amazing English, poetry creative writing teacher. She is an extraordinary woman who truly loves her craft. She will go to NO ENDS to help her students. Take herN learn ur potential!
One of the best classes I've ever taken. The teacher is supportive and helpful like no other, her teaching technique is seemingly painless and extremely painless. She always has time for individual help if you need it. She can be very funny or very serious, always at the appropriate times.
Sydney is so popular with her students that getting to see her is a bit of a chore at times. The discussions in poetry class are lively to put it mildly. I'd take her again if I wasn't plain burned out by it all. I recommend her but if you just need a college credit and don't want to participate then stay away.
Such an amazing person. Shes so smart and truly makes you think about things. Although the work can become tedious, it truly is for the better. Take her!
Inspirational. Personable. Relatable. Passionate. Compassionate. Loves Writing. Wants others to Love Writing. Loves Reading. Wants others to Love Reading. Empowers students to read and write. Total cougar.
Great teacher! Extremely helpful and wants everyone to succeed. I wasn't all that interested in English before, but the class was interesting and I became a better writer. Definitely take her class. Show up and do your work and you'll get a good grade.
Sydney is an excellent teacher and has been such a great help in both classes I was in. However, she is terrible at getting work back on time but understands that life comes up and will give extensions on papers, as long as you don't abuse it. Her class discussions are always interesting and she has a really cool and fun personality! Take her class
Sydney is inspiring in a door-opening kind of way, bringing out an interest in poetry and fiction in me that I didn't know was there. My only complaint is that she makes poor use of classtime; there was too much idle chatter and having to attend Literary Arts Festival events during class time was largely a waste of time.
Great teacher, but this class is available to be taken 4 times, which means everyone was already buddies (kinda awkward at first). At any rate the feedback and workshops on your poetry are insightful and you will improve as a poet just by being around the talented students in her class. Recommended.
Sydney is the best! Funny, lively, passionate. Gives lots of room for creativity. I admit, she's terrible about getting work back to you, but she also gives lots of extensions on deadlines. Her comments on papers are very helpful. Offers tons of feedback on works in progress. No reason not to get a good grade if you ask for feedback b4 turning in.
Amazing teacher. Passionate and funny, lectures fly by. Honestly wants all her students to succeed. Extremely helpful. Very lenient with due dates and offers extensions on almost every paper. Available to read papers and correct them before you turn them in. No reason not to get an A
I hate creative writing, and this class was fun! Sydney is easy going and lenient with deadlines as long as you communicate. This class is graded by contract - you decide what grade you want and do the necessary assignments. Final project is not mandatory, but you will get a "B" if you don't do it.
She is the most proactive teacher I've ever met. I wasn't looking forward to taking an english class but she makes it very interesting, motivates you, encourages critical thinking, and helps you when you need it without making you feel like your a bother. It was actually FUN. Take any of her classes and you wont regret it!
Super awesome lady. love her lectures. laid back, easy going. makes you question what you think you know. work hard in her class and be rewarded. and maybe learn a little about yourself in the process.
takes forever to return your writing and is absent all the time. Just okay
She is lovely! So passionate about English and teaching! It is true she was absent a lot! But she trys very hard to make her class amusing. She doesn't like being late, she will take 5 points if you are late in hading your assignment on due dates unless you talk to her. The only thing about this class is she gives alot of homework!
This instructor is passionate about her subject. But she assigns way too much work. Is is inflexible in working with deadlines. She is brutal if you are late to class. She favors students who agree with her political opinions.
Sydney is one of the best English teachers at Grossmont. But don't take her unless you want to think. The class was very political, but thats ok with me. Just make sure your papers are tight and well thought out and she won't mind if you disagree with her. You have to work for a good grade, but you will learn a lot. I definitely recommend her
Amazing human being! She is the nicest English teacher ever. She is so open minded. I really like her a lot! :)
I love this women. I have taken English 220, 224 and poetry with her. She is supportive in my writing. She cares so deeply for her students. She sees everything and knows what you have to bring whether you do or not.
She is absolutely amazing.
YES you do need to think in her class but there is a lot of room to kind of do your own thing. She is super understanding, if the class seems to be struggling she'll postpone essays. This is so you have more time to come to her office hours. She really cares about the success of her students and has been the best english teacher I've had!
ms brown is amazing in this class! Sence it is a low english class, she gives you the option to reise almost everything you turn in because she really cares about your writting getting better. i have nothing bad to say about this class!
Mrs. Brown honestly cares about every individual in her class. She does not give you the option to fail. You wont be making a mistake if you take her for english.
Sydney took over for Dr. Holder this semester and was brilliant. She is precise and clear in her lectures and absolutely loves the subject material and her students. You will never find a more engaged, caring professor. I have taken her multiple times and wish she could teach all of my classes.
Sydney is beyond amazing! One of my favorite teachers at Gmont. She brings consciousness of the real world to the class and it is really interesting to hear the relation of the assignments she picks. She can be lenient on her mood and always gives reasonable time to complete an essay. It can be challenging. She should have more commentary on essays
I TOOK HER CLASS FOR ENGLISH 98 ! AND I RECEIVED A "B" I THINK I COULD OF DONE BETTER, BUT I WAS LAZY! :( EASY CLASS BUT YOU DO HAVE TO DO THE WORK. AMAZING TEACHER AND GIVES EXTRA CREDIT OPTIONS! IM TAKING HER AGAIN FALL2012 ENGLISH 120!!! S
I love Sydney. She is the best teacher I have ever had. Her passion for english spills over and into her classroom. She is willing to help whenever its needed and is always a joy to listen to. Attend class and you will have no problems passing.
Take this teacher. Your life will change forever. Don't even question it. The end.
Sydney is thought provoking, candid, and entertaining. Taking this class will definitely get you to think outside the box.
Mrs. Brown is an awesome teacher. She really does care about her students and will try every possible way to pass you.If you are struggling she will help you and postpone the due date for you. She talks about relevant subjects and her class is never boring! Take her. I never liked English but taking it with her was relieving.
Sydney was a pretty great teacher. She's like the stereotypical professor that you see in movies. She's edgy, insightful, and cusses like a sailor. Her lectures were very enjoyable and I learned a lot. She's a TOUGH grader. Be prepared to start papers THE DAY they're assigned until the day they're due if you even want to dream of getting an A.
Whether you take Sydney for a Rhetoric class or for Creative Writing class, you will love her. I've taken six semesters with her. Can't get enough.
Nice teacher, made class fun but very harsh grader. I had a solid A going into the final and had an A on every essay and on the final she gave me an F because she didn't want to many A's in the class. Nice to your face but stabs you in the back. Gives a lot of essays to be prepared to write 24/7
THE “hot ticket” in lit/writing. Brilliant, passionate, funny, hip, brilliant, generous w/ her time & talent, entertaining & brilliant. Flexible w/deadlines, assignmts, but she’s no pushover. Heavy reading, tons of writing. For Eng. majors, Syd will rock your world. If you’re just looking to feed your inner lit animal, Syd will rock your universe.
For her first semester taking the reigns of the Am. Lit. II course, Sydney did a fine job, and her syllabus will only get better as she refines and develops the class to her teaching style. An intense ride from Whitman to William S. Burroughs to Sherman Alexie. Sydney Brown is the best professor at Grossmont.
This teacher has a real passion for English. She is the director of the creative writing program at Grossmont, and I really enjoyed her class. She challenges students and gets them prepared for transfer. If you are serious about becoming a better writer, take Sydney
Do not take her class, you will regret it. Hard grader. not helpful
Do not take her class or you will regret it. I took her last semester and I got a C. Horible professor, harsh grader, not clear on assignment. She also has an in-class essay final. So if writing essay is not your forte, avoid her in any possibilities.
Drop the class instantly despite the fact I need it. Chse this class after reading the reviews on rate my professor. What a horrible mistake. Horrible teacher , hard grader. Choose someone else is my suggestion. Avoid her at all cost! Peace
If you are looking to simply pass this class then don't bother. She gives you tools to do well on writing entrance exams for transfers and tools succeed in life. This class requires actual thinking and requires about 4 - 5 essays. Make sure you know MLA it'll count. Please note this is a thinking and writing class so be prepared. I got an A.
I enjoyed going to her class every day. I learned more about English in 2 semesters with her than I ever have.
She plans everything out and gives you what she expects clearly and before hand. Make sure you know MLA even for hand written essays. She will fail your first paper if you don't but gives extra credit to make it up. The class is not an easy class but it will get you ready for your entrance essay for transferring. I was surprised when I got an A.
Not an easy class. She curses a lot which I don't like. Dont really understand her sense of humor. The amount of work is ourageous, so watch out if you want to keep up your gpa. Actually she told the class that out of 35 students there would be only 6-7 get an A
I haven't heard her curse much, though I wish I could! Sydney's class is really interesting and she only demands that you do your best, or at the very least, college level work. Slackers need not apply.
Great English teacher. The concepts discussed in her 124 class were mind-blowing. If you don't like writing papers before Professor Sydney's class, you sure will once you're done. Another cool thing is that she is more conditionally strict in comparison to some absolutely strict teachers. Great English teacher - hard, but worth it.
Sydney Brown is such a sweet person. I have taken her for two semesters and can't get enough. Her class is difficult but she will help you, if you put the effort forth in her class. She is has a passion for teaching and it is evident throughout any class you take with her.
Sydney has a bit of a cult following at Grossmont and it is easy to see why. Creative Writing with her was a great experience! She truly cares about her students and helps every individual to grow into the writer they (may not even know) they could be. Grades are contract bases so you get what you work for. If you're thinking of taking her, do it.
Sydney is an absolutely AMAZING teacher! She makes the class fun and keeps you engaged. There will be group activities so expect that. My writing has significantly improved, and now I actually understand the material. I will definitely be taking her in future English classes, and I absolutely recommend choosing her for your next English course.
I took Creative Writing with Sydney and finally found my major and my passion. She is amazing. The class doesn't feel like a class. It feels like an actual workshop and is only for people that care about improving themselves as writers (its not ENG 120) versus those just trying to get a course requirement done. Shes a really great professor!
Sydney is by far the best English professor at Grossmont! She genuinely cares about her students and wants you to succeed. She assigns a lot of HW that can be time consuming, but I would expect nothing less from a college level course. I've already signed up for English 124 with her over the summer!
I was disappointed when her class ended. Although it challenged me as a writer, her class was one that I looked forward to go to because her vibrant personality makes it feel like anything but a class. She genuinely cares for her students and wants them to succeed. She makes it clear what she excepts out of you in your papers and assignments.
Sydney rocks! Not much more to it than that! She is a clear grader, provides ample extra credit opportunities, and the class is based around interesting concepts that allow you to want to work hard for her. I would take her class again in a heartbeat. In fact, I will for 124.
She is a great teacher I wish she taught English 110! totally recommend her.
Great Teacher! Made me really think more about my writing and how to write more effectively. IS really encouraging and will go above and beyond to help you with your writing and assignments if asked.
I would take her again for English 120
Sydney rocks!! Enough said. Seriously! Yes, it's an English class, there are long papers, but Sydney is a fair grader. She rewards effort and doesn't allow differing opinions to sway how she grades. She is super open minded. I would take Sydney again and again if I needed more English.
She is a very good teacher but she'll cancel class sometimes, she can talk the entire class period without really making sure if you're understanding the material, and she will be all of the place with grading. It took her almost 3 weeks to hand us back our grades for the semester.
Everything assigned were books or things she liked herself and wanted to show her students and have them write long papers about. If you disagreed with her, it seemed like she started to grade you harsher afterwards. Her instructions are not clear at all- students were constantly asking eachother what she wanted for the assignments
Professor Brown is great at teaching! Her expectations are clear, and she is more than willing to read papers before the due date and give great feedback.
Keep in mind she is super busy teaching more than 5 classes a semester. It can take weeks before you get your grade back. Sydney is understanding and willing to work with her students. Never be afraid to protest a due date!
Great easy going teacher. I suck at english and i passed the class with ease. Super cool and down to earth. She will do anything to help her students pass her class.
She was really helpful if you needed help. She gives lots of reading and will ask questions the next day. She gives pop quizes but she will clue out when they are. Easy's are tough but she let's you revise.
Sydney's great, she's always more than willing to help with an essay and she definitely makes the class pretty fun. However she did cancel class quite a few times, which in the long run definitely helped a lot of people but overall she was great, I worked with her during her office hours on an essay and got a perfect score because of it:)
I would only give this professor a 5 between 1 and 5. When you asked to meet her after class in her office, she would skip out of it at the last minute with a note on the door. What ever happened to e mail notification? You know it is interesting that you are not to use foul language on this site, yet prof. Brown used it in her class a lot.1
I just would not take from Prof. Brown ever again and luckily I don't have to. As an English major going for my certificate I was not helped by her and as a DSPS student that was unacceptable. She needs to listen to the students and when they send her an e mail, then respond. Also, she needs to use BLACKBORD for making sure we know our grades.
I was in the same section of American lit and Sydney helped me alot. She met me out of class more than once. I had some major things going on in my life and she gave me more time on papers, which saved my grade and my sanity. Honestly, I don't think I could have passed this class without her kindness. She really cares about her students.
Sydney cares so much about her students and their success. She's so down to earth it's awesome. Her class is easy as long as you put forth effort. Expect lots of readings and easy essays. Her grading is very clear and helpful. You have an option of essay revisions for full credit. Class is cancelled or she's late often. Highly recommend taking her
She a very caring loving person gives great feedback easy grader due to being on eng 98 but she did make us do couple essays and some other papers. not hard but worked for my grade !
sedney is just great and shes the only teacher that udnerstands the student including me , she is tough grader but her class is so fun and i know she gives a lot of hw but still she makes them clear and easy. i would love to take her for english 120.
Not Easy A if you don't do work, but if you do it's an easy A 100% because she loves to teach and she actually cares about students. Best teacher in the world
As a strong a student who struggled to hold a c in this class I would not advise taking sydney brown. she is very unapproachable and seams to not show up to class every other week or so. She tends to act superior and speaks to her students as if they are unintelligent.
Sydney is funny so class goes by fast. I learned more about writing in this class than all of high school. She even helped me write a letter to petition for financial aid. Love her!
I just love Miss Sydney, Enrique, and the way they do their class. You get to revise every thing and that is what helped me the most. They are fun and care alot. I am going to take Miss Sydney for all my English classes.
I took Sydney's 120 and 124 accelerated online courses and thoroughly enjoyed both. Sydney is a great teacher. She uses a combination of discussions, essays and quizzes. As long as you hit all the points on the grading rubric you're golden. Quizzes are easy, just read what she tells you to read beforehand. 10/10 would recommend.
1- She doesn't prefer to impart or react legitimately. This is an online class, and she should react to any scrutinize that befuddles an understudy. 2- Not very evident. She allows a 4 hour test like clockwork without giving the fundamental inquiries previously we tap on the (take test). 4 hours test is extremely troublesome for English 124 under
Lots of reading with an extremely high vocabulary, & are controversial & boring. Short replies that make you feel stupid for asking questions. High point quizzes that contain large essays that are due in 4 hours once opened & you can only open these ONCE. Very strict, unreasonable, & hypocritical w/ deadlines (modules taking forever to be updated).
the worst teacher that i ever taken
I loved Sydney, was never very good in English through High School. Sydney made me look at English in a new way. She was always very willing to help if you needed it. She gives you plenty of opportunity to get the grade you want, if you put the effort. Would've taken all my English classes with her if possible, Absolute favorite teacher so far!
I can't believe you guys took the same class i did. I took Brown for her online English 124 and it was a great class, though difficult because you do a semester in half the time. We only had one four hour quiz that was four short essay questions that were not that hard at all. She always got back to me quickly and was chill. this is college
do not take her online class a lot students drop the class with W
I love Sydney! She's very open minded and is WOKE! I love the 2 small books, we had to read for class. No textbook tho, we do write a bit of essays, attendance is mandatory but is very understanding if something comes up. Just be honest with her and she will be cool with you. Always has office hours, definitely taking her for Eng 124 in the fall!
The only struggle was the lack of syllabus and organization during the first couple of weeks. Other than that Sydney was really understanding and gave a good amount of time to turn in the essays. She allowed extensions if you asked. She graded fairly and gave a lot of simple extra credit opportunities. She isn't great with attendance.
One of the best professors I've Ever had. Her readings aren't boring textbook readings, her course work has to do with relavent issues/ topics today. She gives alot of feedback, and helps her students above and beyond. Always caring, outgoing, and understanding. loved her.
I truly enjoyed my time in Ms. Brown's class. It is difficult and will challenge you as a writer but you are graded faily and her feedback encourages you to analyze your writing from various perspectives. You absolutely get what you put in. I would recommend her class and would take it again if I had the time.
Terrible. Extremely disorganized teacher, constantly behind on her syllabus calendar, impossible to know what readings need to be completed for the next class so you are caught up, and a ridiculously tough grader for someone who is so terribly organized. She is obviously very passionate about what she teachs, but it gets in the way of organization.
Prof. Brown's class was my favorite at Grossmont. She teaches it more like a writer than a historian, so i liked that we discussed form a lot. we did get off track from the syllabus many times, but it's because we had really good class discussions and I think it is is more about quality discussion than quantity of literature.
good teacher 10/10
What I've noticed is that I like a lot of teachers than some peers of mine don't. Opinions are opinions, and that's okay. Professor Brown was one of the most passionate teachers I've yet had. People may say, oh, she didn't follow the syllabus perfectly, and while that's true, it was because we went rather deep into the literature that we read.
Shes tough.
This probably would have been an even better class to take in person, but for an online source Coach Syd was awesome. I grew a lot in this class.
Sydney is the goat. Tells it like it is. Coolest lady ever, creates fair opportunities for all of her students. She ensures that everyone in her class succeeds while maintaining a respectful and cheerful demeanor the entire time.
I do NOT recommend this teacher. If your English is your second language, most likely you will regret taking this class with her. She does not answer questions and when she does she'll makes you feel stupid. She will give you so much homework that you wont have time for anything else, Very difficult, she doesn't like any homework you turn in either
This was the best class I took at Grossmont. Sydney is funny and super understanding and the class really made me think. I wish i could take another class with her but i am transferring--yay!
Amazing teacher! Easy grader and easy to understand. She will help you get an A in the class, but just make sure you do the essays!
This class was on the easy side, your average reading material, essays, discussions etc. The one thing that did irritate me was her lack of help in the class, like if you don't understand something the first time she won't tell you how to better understand it, instead she'll just respond with "not quite right" ???
She is AMAZING!!!!!! Very cooperative and cares about her students. She gives extra-credit and does it in a fun and creative way like a scavenger hunt for eggs. Would love to take another class with her!
Finally, a professor that treats college students like adults! Brown is very in-tune with the feelings of generations that are growing up in an uncertain world. Class is incredibly socratic and you'll love it because of it. Challenging in an invigorating way. I wish I could take this class every semester. Take this professor and change your life.
she cool
Gave me the best feedback on essays i've ever been given, and she allows revisions. Discussions are fun to participate in and there's not a lot of homework besides four essays, discussion questions, and light reading. As long as you don't regularly skip her class you'll pass.
Feedback focuses on you being wrong, overshadowing areas of potential. Assignments come with a feedback loop, complicating their educational benefit. She steers students towards external resources rather than providing direct guidance. Her approach is constraining, with a discernable reluctance to entertain diverse viewpoints that are not like hers
I took English124 with professor Brown in an accelerated 8 week course while the coursework was a heavy load she was really nice and gave lots of good feedback.
Prof Brown was amazing, I took the faster class so there was a lot of work each week but the structure of the class is very organized so you don't get lost. There are three essays, she allows drafts so she gives you helpful individual feedback to fix your work and turn the essay back within a week. Follow instructions and reflect on feedback
Prof Brown runs a tight ship, but the feedback and structure pay off. Essays with drafts, engaging discussions, and a reasonable workload. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for essay prep.
The teacher was a very nice lady. The start of the year will start slow but gradually you'll begin to do more papers. The papers are easy and she allows you to revise if you don't like the grade you get. the class is lecture-heavy however going over things like easy structure and pathos ethos logos. recommend to everyone
Amazing professor! Offers detailed feedback and lets you revise assignments for a new score w/ no penalty. Follow the rubric, and essays are graded generously (I got 95%+ on all). Quizzes are easy, discussions are minimal, and the class is super chill. Extra credit is hidden in assignments, so keep an eye out. Would definitely take her again!
took this online and accelerated, was very face paced but manageable. procrastinated all my essays and still got an A. even online Professor Brown has a great personality, can tell she really cares for her students!! discussion boards did get tedious. i had a zoom call with her over a faulty AI scan, but she was extremely understanding and sweet.
I took the accelerated online course and from her interactions with her students, Professor Brown is extremely kind and caring; considerate too. Her instructions are very thorough but also can come in large amounts but she gives good feedback and only wants the best for you. I would recommend the online course if you're like that
I took her online for her 8-week accelerated Eng 124. I would not recommend. She would give feedback on everything and expect you to apply it, including discussion post replies. There were three giant essays and lots of reading. There is at least one heavy discussion post a week with two peer replies, she is also a tough grader.
