Very nice, involved with subject and her enthusiasm comes through. Lecture can be tedious at times, but the tests are fair and she is willing to proofread papers before due date. Would recommend.

Awsome Prof, great story teller, totally involved, traveled all over the world, compleatly helpful, can be hard nosed, but pretty fair, great teacher and I didn't even get an A!

She has teachers pets. I didn't think she was very fair. She is anal with her grading, and I would not recommend her unless your'e willing to put in much effort to get a decent grade in her class.

she's ok. she seems nice and stuff, but she grades way too hard. especially on exams. she says you did good and covered the points and then end up getting a D. too much crap to cover in the semester too. its not like im taking this as my major or something.

Merkel does not like any ideas that come from someone other than herself. Oh well, I guess that why she makes the big bucks. She needs to understand a different view from hers is not a challenge or an attack of her.

I Love this teacher. I've had 3 classes, all A's. i felt she was very open to discussion of other opinions in her religious class. People in the class seemed to have a problem setting their beliefs aside and looking at the bible from a scholarly perspective. She's very clear about her expectations and very willing to give extra help if you need it.

she offered beacon which was extremely helpful!! she is a hard teacher but if you do the readings and listen in class you will do well. i GOT a A in there and i was suprised myself. if you go to beacon you will get an A as well.

she is very willing to help but grades a little hard. sometimes it is hard to understand her.

Great professor! Very sweet, nice, understanding, lenient, and helpful. But I do admit the lectures could be very boring at times. Required to do two essays... very open and easy. Graded kind of hard on exams.. but everything else was pretty simple if you actually payed attention and studied! I learned a lot, I recommend her!

Professor Merkel seems to me to be a wonderful teacher who's received a great deal of libel and slander from the very conservative christian movement that's plagued ARC. Even listening to her classes while waiting for mine, I can tell she's extremely knowledgeable and well read - her lectures are engaging and informative, but not long winded.

Shes hard yet easy.i really liked her it was hard but easy to accomplish if u listen to her and follow her rules. Yet i found she grated pretty good i got an A on both her first test and i never get As hope to get an A on the last one!! She makes u learn but learning with her is easy

If you keep up on your reading, this class is cake. People seem to think she doesn't give A's out but not only did I get one, so did others. She is big on respect and offers make-ups and xtra credit. The secret to success in her class is to take notes when she talks!! She is very accessible and helpful during her office hours.

She is not crazy...yes she is hard, test are mostly essay's but she pretty much spoon feeds you what you need to know, it's up to you to read and comprehend, adnif you need help, ask her, she will help you. She knows her stuff, she's hard, but you can do well, jsut be ready to work hard.

Merkel is the funniest, sweetest, and most understanding prof i know. She is down to earth, realistic, sarcastic, all in one! She is a lovely person and a great professor, if i could, i would take her class again, but she already gave me an "A". If you are looking for someone who thinks outside the box, this is your gal!

Prof. Merkel is a great teacher. She is super helpful and really cares about her students. This class was really hard. Go to class, keep up with your reading and take good notes and an A is definitely possible. I would definitely recommend this class, though it is really hard so only for people who are willing to put in a lot of work

Professor Merkel is a great professor, she offers unique insights into the sources and helps to provide a greater understanding of the underlying issues and symbolism. She is also a genuinely understanding and supportive teacher, while her views may be seen as liberal and she is most certainly a feminist she is not by any means anti-Christian.

Prof. Merkel is such a sweet person, she smiles so genuinely every time she sees you. Her lectures are okay, a little off-topic sometimes. She shows a lot of videos. She grades super easy! I got A's in my 2 essays which I personally thought weren't that good. She's funny and a great person overall, the kind you wish was your grandmother =)

LOVE HER! She is hilarious, nice and really knowledgeable. She has great stories, and is very opinionated. She's like the kinda crazy aunt I always wanted! Super sarcastic, in a great way! Learned a ton!

Professor Merkel is a very hard teacher. Her tests are all essays, but she teaches you every thing you need to know. Not only that but she lets you see the questions that going to be on the test before hand, so if you fail it's your own fault. She is really funny, and makes the class interesting. I really enjoyed her class and might take another.

Merkel is an excellent teacher. She made everything relevent, repeated notes, and is very personable. However, I feel that she is too stuck in her opinions or views on certain subjects. If you argue a different point-of-view than her own she grade you down on your paper/test/exam.

Professor Merkel is great. Great lecture, and plenty of extra credit opportunities. Some people complain that she's a hard grader on papers, but as long as you know the material, and you can write reasonably well, you will have no problems. Merkel also goes out of her way to show you the interesting parts of humanities. Great lady!!

There is a lot of reading and she gives a study guide for exams and even goes over them. she is an average grader, she looks 2 see if you put what you talked about in the essay questions and if u did u get a pleasing grade. lectures is just talking.speak up she likes it

Good Professor.Class consists of 5 quizzes(need book).A midterm(matching & essays, Final(take home essay & 3 in-class essays).Attendance is mandatory(role call).Art slides are extremely boring,lecture is interesting,a lot of reading. Overall Prof. Merkel is great,she is helpful and a charming lady.

Her class to me seamed unstructured. its very hard to pick what to take notes on. It is important to read the book, the quizzes are totally based on the book. The midterm and final are on lectures in class. quizzes are easy, test are very hard and she expects alot

The class was unstructed and very hard. She would give you study guides for each section but she grades incredibly hard on her tests. She's an entertaining professor, but this class is far from easy.

If you do all the reading assigned you'll pass. Great teacher, clarifies if you ask questions. She gives study guides and the questions are identical to the ones on the tests.

This professor knows her stuff and she expects you to try your best in her class. She's tough, but you *will* learn in her class and her expectations for her students are indeed high. Excellent professor. She is challenging, as in you have to learn to pass the class, has a great sense of humor, and grades fairly. You will learn. It's guaranteed.

Great teacher. Very interesting lectures. She gives study guides which are almost exactly what is on the tests. Finals and mid-terms have some in-class essays, but if you do the reading and are prepared, you will do well. I had a wonderful experience in this class.

A very good teacher. The class is great and i recommed taking it. She expects you to do ALL of the reading, but gives every chance to pass the class. The answers are all but given to you in the study guides for both the quizes and exams. She is more than willing to explain anything.

Sydney's lectures were engaging and the reading was easy and entertaining. Her quizzes are supper easy. Finals were a little tricky if you don't do the reading or show for the lectures. I really reccommend this teacher, but if you don't plan to do your assignments, don't bother.

She is a great teacher, I lvoe her! If you slack off of course you arent going to do well jsut like any other class! Her papers and quizes are easy, midterm and final not so much. You learn alot and she tries to keep class interesting, kind of a boring subject and it is unclear what notes you should take during lecture but overall good class.

Merkel knows her stuff. The way she describes things to the class is very engaging, but the art slides were quite boring at times. You have about 5 quizzes and 2 papers and 2 midterms: all fairly easy. The only downside is that all of the information throughout the course is rather disconnected so it's hard to keep track of where you are.

Good teacher, a little biased when it comes to art but manages to bring the culture and history of the past come to life. You NEED your book for the quizzes, gives you complete study guide for quizzes ands tudy quide for midterm and final.

great teacher. really nice. class is super easy as long as u attend and take notes. need book for quizzes (exact questions as study sheet) and exact exam questions given ahead of time. 2 essays-very open for interpretation and some extra credit. U learn all the culture without having to memorize dates, etc. Love the class!

Sydney was great. I had no interest in classical art but learned a lot along the way. Tests and quizzes are right from the book. Energetic and funny, knows pop culture, too.

Medium-easy clas, she's very nice and very helpful, but classtime can be pretty slow. Not a lot of homework, but you do need to know your stuff for her quizzes and exams. Taker her 365 class only if the topic interests you, if not, then I wouldn't recommend her.

She is very helpful during office hours and even will help you do outlines for papers. Quiz questions are right out of the study guide which is nice. I'm a B/A student and I tired very hard in this class and got my second C ever in college :/. I did every single extra credit opportunity she gave. If you do bad on one paper it's hard to catch up.

Merkel's class is not difficult as long as you use her study guides. She goes over all the reading and explains it well, she is very passionate about the subject. Her tests are not hard as long as you study, the only thing to keep in mind is that she wants SPECIFICS,lots of specifics. She offers extra credit and her essays only have to be two pages

Two Sayre books and 3 texts that you have to read. She goes over the readings in class. Quiz questions are exactly as they are on the study guide. When it comes to exams and papers, USE SPECIFICS! SHE WANTS SPECIFICS! I feel like she was expecting a lot out of her students.Tough essay grader. I was less than 2% away from a B, and never read.

You really have to work hard for this class, by the end there were barely any people left. She's a nice teacher but hard grader!

Sydney was so amazing for HUM 300 that I had to take 310. Her lectures are really fascinating and funny. Humanities isn't always easy, but if you work hard and do the reading you'll do well. Her exams are tough, just use lots of detail in your essays. The quizzes are a breeze and the 2 essays are fun and easy.

The professor is outstanding. I enjoyed her class a lot, only because I put work into it. There's a lot of studying but if you keep up and stay on top of things you will do fine. She can be strict, so it's important that you do as she says and when she assigns hw. If you are an A student than you will get an A in the class. Try!!

I love this class. It can be fairly tough, but she provides study guides for the textbook reading and quizzes you with questions from the guides (I recommend making flashcards!). She's always helpful, she's always friendly and I've thoroughly enjoyed her class this semester. It's challenging but well worth it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Professor Merkel was friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. The only issues I had with the class were that she does tend to grade pretty tough on the midterm and final. She provides a study guide for the quizzes and then takes questions right from the guide. Get a study buddy and cross check answers, though!

She will never give you a question on a test without telling you that it will be on the test. There are a few study guides that she tests on which are fill in the blank, word from word, from the text book. There are a couple papers she assigns that really make you think about the subject and are interesting to write about. VERY knowledgeable!

I got a big fat F in the first midterm, and I went to talk to her during the office hours. She went over my exam and helped me understand where I went wrong and how to do better in the next exam. She can come across as impatient and rude, but she is really nice person behind the gruff exterior. Go and talk to her if you are having trouble.

I am an old student of Mrs. Merkel and she is one of the best teachers. I got a 40% on my mid-term and she went over my exam and explained where I went wrong. She also introduced me to one of her ex-students to help me prepare for the final. Don't let her harsh exterior scare you away. She will definitely help you if you are eager to learn.
