Difficult class, but a great teacher, helped my writing to improve so much.
Definitely a beneficial class to take!
If you like English, Sydney is the professor for you. She's absolutely incredible, and makes the material very fun and accessible. She's brilliant, but you would hardly know she was a professor sometimes. Very cool person!! =)
Ick. If you are not a feminist, liberal, God-hater she'll be evil to you. She pointed out males in the class and bagged on them, But praised women in the class for doing the same things. Oh, yah, sometimes you'll think you're in yoga class--not English
Outstanding! Lots of demanding work, but very much worth it. Very approachable and doesn't demand that you agree with her as long as you can support your arguments.
Not a very good person to get to know. Major ****. Many double-standards come out of her mouth. Just as bitter as the men who act the same way towards women.
I like to call her "chip", because of that huge chip on her shoulder! Avoid this person, she can be really sour.
wonderful teacher. hard.. but is interested in what she's teaching. has students listen to music, get involved, read out loud etc..she is a very good teacher.
Interesting presentations, but lacking in clarity and fairness. Makes random insulting comments and has double standard for grading - watch out if you disagree with her take on something or if you're a guy.
Intelligent and passionate. Strong on her views.
This class kicked my ass. I loved the material but I don't ever want to hear the name "Hamlet" as long as I live. Everyone in the class was guessing on what their grade was going to be because her grading is unpredictable, and her standards were impossible. I did learn alot but could have gotten more out of it if the work load wasn't so heavy.
Very hard class. You can tell she is passionate about the subject, but unless you excell in essay writing and are willing to put in extra hours trying to find out what she is looking for it is very hard. She allowed her students to re-write essays in my class, which helped.
I love her class! It's hard, but you feel like you've really learned something worthwhile. I never found her insensitive. If you're friendly with her she'll love you! (Only take her though if you love english lit.)
She substituted for our class when Karischner couldn't teach it anymore, and she is a tougher grader. She expects a lot more and crammed in a lot of material which made it rough, but if you hold on then you do ok. don't take this class if you're going to want a free ride.
I had such a good time in her class and learned alot! she's tough, but fair. I would definitely recommend her especially if you like old literature.
She really knows her stuff and is very enthusiastic about Brit Lit! 3 short exams, 3 papers, take home final. It's a survey class so be prepared for a lot of reading, but you really take something away from this class. I found her to be tough but fair, and definitely willing to help. It's well worth it to take this class!
Take this if you enjoy literature, if you enjoy reading, if you enjoy WRITING PAPERS. She is tough on papers - you have to really sit down and think outside the box. The one paper I put no effort in, I got an A, and the others I got Bs in. It's an enjoyable class for us Brit lit geeks, she knows her stuff and while eccentric is really great!
Dr. Sims is one of my favorite profs at Moorpark College. If you want to read great material and learn to write really well, take this class. Dr. Sims pushes you hard but you really learn. It is completely worth and blood and sweat along the way. I highly recommend her class.
Shes definately one of my favorite teacher ive ever had. Shes very good at what she does and she really does try to make the class not so boring. She trys to be hip and fun, even though shes 50+, and its entertaining. Theres not very much hw and she grades fairly. I would definately recommend this class to anyone. It was pretty easy and shes great
this teacher is by far the nicest lady ever. she is a little bit of a feminist but she teaches well. you will write a lot of essays but nothing big longest 2 1/2 pages. SINCH no vocab or TESTs best english teacher i've ever had and i usually don't like teachers :) if u want a good grade take her!
She is the cutest lady ever. Total lit nerd but sweet as can be. Lots and lots of reading. Her papers require you to work on them from the moment she assigns them, there is no way you can pull all nighters on them. But she does allow re-writes which is awesome, and her comments on papers are extremely helpful.
This teacher is very demanding and requires lots of reading and papers in one semester there were 3 papers due 6-10 pages long first one was due on the third class.
Extremely smart, and very helpful. There is alot of writing involved, so be aware. I was sick of the writing and I like to write. She doesn't take crap from students but I liked that she demands attention during her class. She'll have alot of exercises within class that always seem so tortuous, but they end up being really helpful. She's fun too.
She is a fabulous english teacher. She inspired me to work hard and become an English major. I loved every minute of this class. The tests and essay's are difficult, reading the material is necessary for success in this class! Take her you will not regret it at all!!!
Brilliant, simply brilliant. If you enjoy the analytical side of literature classes you will excel in her classroom. She is also helpful, and her door is always open to students. I was already a "lit nerd" when I entered her class, but she improved me tenfold.
Took her for Brit. Lit AND Shakespeare in the same semester- nearly killed me, but she's a phenomenal professor and truly knows what she is talking about. Be prepared to write difficult essays and participate in illuminating discussions. Love her! Taking her for an independent study on John Milton and I'm jumping out of my skin for excitement.
To say that she was a brilliant teacher would be an understatement. Two things are necessary for you to succeed in her class: hard work and ambition. The first one will help you pass the class, but the latter, in conjunction with her profound teaching, will help you soar to great heights academically and gain profound depths in character.
Professor Sims is the best professor Ive had-I cannot describe exactly what it is but I most certainly took something amazing from being in her class.attendence is mandatory-dont wrry-ull want to be there.4 tests/3 essays.tough grader/tests r easier than essays.lg scrapbook assignment.class def not an easy A but def worth the effort-its so awesome!
She really loves teaching English & puts effort into helping you if you talk to her! She grades papers very tough though(don't expect any A's on first attempt). You can make up the essays though. 4 exams. No real final except for a final project due in parts. Major issue is she has certain parts due on dates instead of just a final paper. Fun class!
~3 essays due. Final project but no tests(no final exam either). She requires notes on all the plays. The biggest difficulty would be juggling this class and Brit. Lit. class at the same time as she gives some pretty harsh due dates that conflict. Have to recite a sonnet from memory. Discussions are fun and interesting, take her if you love English!
Teaches as if she is your only class. Every day there is a different assingment due. Very hard grader, expects a lot! If you dont care for english and have more to worry about in life then doing essays dont take this class! Very helpful on essays but will catch anything. Her life is english be careful!
This teacher is extremely nice and has a sense of humor and helps any way she can to help you succeed. Although, i always get A's in english and I got a D on my first essay. She is a very hard grader!!! Very boring class, and i felt like i was in church. If your up for a real challenge, take her class. If not, i would not recommend her.
EXTREMELY hard grader. I have always gotten A's in English, but this class made me doubt myself. She loved my responses in class but always had something to say about my essays. She allows you to revise your first 2 essays (take advantage of it!). She will help you out if you talk to her one-on-one. PARTICIPATE! She loves it!
There are few teachers you encounter that change your life. Sims is without a doubt one of the best instructors I have ever had. Go to class, get excited about the material. Extremely engaging and splendid during office hours. Must work hard for your A. Sydney Sims is the best! Take her class!
No question about it, Sims is tough. You read a ton, she's militant concerning grammar, spelling, and format, and she expects a quality of thoughtfulness out of students that would be the norm at a graduate school. That said, you couldn't find a better instructor to inspire you to vault over the high bars that she sets. Take all you can from her.
Sims is one tough teacher. She is very nerdy in a completely endearing way. Very willing to help and trust me you will need it, especially on essays. Hard class but if you get an A you are looking good! She REALLY knows her stuff!
Took Shakespeare and Chaucer; Dr. Sims is totally AWSOME!
She is a really nice person but my experience with her helpfulness is no where near it should have been. She said on the first day that it would be a fun class, and a fun class to me isn't reading a whole play in about 2 days, analyzing it for 1 day and starting a new play on the next. If for whatever reason you fall behind you might as well drop.
Sims is the best!! You must love English to take her. She's very specific when it comes to papers. Took this class along with Brit Lit, and there were a lot of assignments due on the same days. She's adorable, nerdy, sweet, and opinionated.Sims is very tough, but it's worth it. I learned so much and became a much better writer because of her class.
Worst English teacher I've ever had. All she did was critique and mark up essays. She doesn't elaborate on corrections and has a specific writing style she wants all of her students to maintain. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! First B I ever got in English.
I took Sydney Sims for Intro to College Writing in Spring 2013 and she really helped me prepare for Jessica Hasson's ENGL M01A and ENGL M01C classes I took FALL 2013 and Spring 2014 respectively. She provided helpful feedback comments for each essay we turn in for addition revision. I enjoyed being in her class and shes a great professor.
LOTS of work. 4 exams (lowest grade dropped), 3 papers (revisions allowed), turning in notes constantly, large scrapbook involved, LONG readings etc. All exams are FILL-IN, which makes testing hard. Also, you (pointlessly) have to recite Chaucer to the class. TOUGH grader but she is a nice lady & knows her stuff. Don't miss class!
She has a specific style that she wants everyone to convert to. She thinks everyone is an English major or aspiring to be one. She doesn't grade you as a writer she grades you for your paper that doesn't have her formula in it
Sims is amazing!!!!! Yes, she makes you read, write, and memorize. You're taking English. The coursework is difficult, but she brings fun, creativity, and beauty to what she teachers. The tests were odd and didn't really make sense, but even if you do poorly on those, you can still get an A. She gives detailed notes on your papers. SUPER helpful!!
She's nice, but is looking for a certain kind of writing. I've always gotten As in English; writing is my strong point. She mostly gave me Bs. Lots of assignments due & tons of printing. Luckily, she had us revise our papers twice before giving a final grade. Also, we had to read countless stories, poems, and Jane Eyre. Hard work, but she's not bad
I had Dr. Sims for two semesters at CLU. I enjoyed her Shakespeare class, and found her intelligence and funny voices to be entertaining. However, there were times when I felt that she looked down on me because I was not as smart or experienced in the subjects that she was. Her class was one of the first English classes I remember struggling in.
She was actually a great teacher. She's pretty hard sometimes but she's supportive. I'm usually pretty good at Eng since it's my major, but there are somethings I still need to fix. She helped a bit. Expect A LOT of homework&reading. My brain was fried. 4 essays. We didn't get a final, but it probably depends. Don't skip. Prepare to talk in class
I don't recommend taking this class. I have nothing against her, I think she is an amazing professor, but her work load is just too much. She treats students like we're graduate English majors that are only taking one class. I feel constant overwhelming stress from the amount of work I have for her class alone. Clear your plate before you take her.
Professor Sims is incredibly intelligent and passionate about her subject, but she loads students with enormous amounts of reading. If you are taking any other challenging courses or work outside of school, expect to be drowning in readings and work. She does let you revise your papers and is helpful if you make the effort.
She is the best English teacher at Moorpark. Yes, one must know how to write before taking her classes, something students should know how to do before getting into advanced English courses but don't. She teaches her subjects to depth that will benefit students. She also critiques papers expertly. She is the best editor I know. A gift to students.
Sims is great! She will make you work for your grade, but she definitely does everything she can to help you. With essays, she grades them and types up a sheet for each individual and tells them how to make their paper better, and you have the chance to revise your paper. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Take her!
If you have a social life, a job, or just have a life outside of school in general, DO NOT TAK HER. The world revolves around her class and she gives the work of four classes combined. Was taking five classes when I took her, big mistake. She's nice and funny and she does know what she's talking about, but be warned. The work load is too much.
Horrible! She gives a short time frame for tests! She rushes through them just to show videos that you can literally watch on YouTube at home. Leaves lots of homework. She makes you feel dumb and puts you on the spotlight too! Definitely do no recommend her!
Dr. Sims will make you work hard for your grade but her passion for and knowledge of the subject makes it all worth it! She loves the literature she is teaching and will make you love it too. She is a tough essay grader but allows a rewrite. She makes class discussions interesting, fun, and often hilarious. Sims is an exceptional professor!
Honestly one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. She really does teach as if she is your only class. Don't expect much free time if you take this class. Loads of notes and reading daily. Gives little to no time between essays which she grades harshly, she literally used a ruler to measure margins. She's a little too passionate for me.
Worst professor I have ever had!!!! Expect to do nothing in your life other than her class constant homework reading with mandatory notes her specific way or she won't accept it. You will be stressed till your hair falls out working on 3 essays at one since nothing is organized and you will never have a break DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
I usually love english, but absolutely hated it this semester. She couldn't care less about her students or their schedules. She acts as if this is the only class you're taking and gives sloppy and off topic lectures. Genuinely not a very nice person and give sarcastic and unhelpful feedback.
Sims truly does not realize that students have other classes that take up their time, or that some students work on top of that. Simply, this class is unorganized and unfair. You'll write and rewrite three essays in a three week period along with copious amounts of reading and annotating along with graded note-taking. Worst class I have ever taken.
I can confirm an earlier review of how Professor Sims uses a ruler to check the margins of your essays. I was baffled but every Professor is different. I took Professor Sims at CSUCI for a weekly class and overall enjoyed the class. Her workload can be hectic but she made learning about Shakespearean plays and sonnets fun.
She is the WORST professor I have ever had. She's not specific about what she wants and wants everything her way. I've never gotten less than an A in English and I actually failed her class. I do not recommend. She does not care about what you have to say and does everything revolving her.
Survey of Eng Lit I with Professor Sims involves lots of very difficult readings and you will be required to turn in notes on each story which leads up to a paper on which you will use your notes to complete. The class has a lot of work outside the class just based on how hard the readings are but she will go over everything in class!
Despite of her bad rating I had to take her class as it was the only class available as a requirement. Even if you write a flawless paper, you will be disheartened by her finding many flaws in it, which in my opinion-- just to brag about her knowledge. Only 3 papers and 4 exams for the entire course, but a ton of reading. Do not take her!!!
I understand that a professor should have high standards, Sims has unreasonably tough standards. She virtually measures the margins on your paper with a ruler! She has no consideration for the fact that students have other classes and a life to live. She should be stopped from teaching. Only take her as the last resort.
I've never received a C on a paper until I took her class. Although I did learn a lot from her, Professor Sims expectations were unrealistically high for me as a full time student and having a part time job. I took her as a last resort and I would suggest the same. If you do have the extra time to dedicate for her class though, take her :)
She's like the Eye of Sauron; nothing escapes her gaze. She will note every minuscule imperfection in your writing. If you need additional help, she'll be there for you. I scheduled many meetings with her during her office hours. Those meetings have been the most significant part of my college education. I hope you take one of her classes!
You cant complain to her because she is the dean for English department. Very rude and unappreciative. She has highly unrealistic expectations of her students. It would be her death to give a student an A.
I wish professor Sims was also teaching English M01. She is such an amazing professor. Anyone starting college and is not sure if you can jump right into M01 she is a great source to make you feel confident to get there.
She honestly isnt that bad. However keep in mind she never gives anyone an A. Shes a tough grader, and will find something wrong with every assignment, but the work is definitely manageable. Her essay topics are somewhat vague. However, I learned a lot about Shakespeares best works and it was an overall fun class.
Lots of reading. The workload got pretty heavy at points, but she kept her promise that it would get easier. Clearly passionate about literature and likes to have class discussions.
if you are looking for a professor w human decency and critical thinking, this is not the one for you. Besides the insane and unreasonable amounts of homework and ridiculous content, this teacher does not care about you as a person and it will show. Insane coursework load, long lectures, and a complete and utter lack of compassion
Prof. Sims is NOT for everyone. Sweet woman but incredibly disorganized. She expects everyone to know and understand Old English Text. She and her requirements become quite overwhelming by the first paper. She doesnt make exceptions for anyone or anything. If you cant keep up with consistent reading and writing DO NOT take her. Good Luck!
Literally worst professor I have ever had. The fact that she is employed and the chair of dept is beyond me. Incredible rude, horrible lectures, hard grader, and honestly just a really apathetic and uncaring person. Do NOT take her class if you can help it
Im not sure if this rating will be posted because of how honest it is... But to put it simply. Shes a terrible teacher. Shes the department chair so you cant really complain about her to anyone AND she teaches a required class. I tried so hard in her class and put in so much time into all my essays and she still gave me a D.
15A is a really challenging class and not for everyone. Be ready to dedicate A LOT of time and energy to the class. To do well, you must do all the readings and whatever you can to understand them. Before this class I was a decent writer, but Sims pushes you to be even better and gives incredible feedback. Do the revisions (they'll help ur grade!)!
I adore Professor Sydney Sims. She made me feel challenged and inspired and made me want to be a better English student. Shes the hardest grader Ive had, but that just made the wins in her class more impactful and I felt respected as a student. Shes available for extra help and is passionate about the subject.
Truly the worst professor I have ever had, and the best part? good luck complaining as she is the department chair. Awful at teaching, horribly disrespectful to her students, and grades like her salary is determined by how many students she can crush. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES
I cannot praise Prof. Sims enough. She's so passionate about everything she teaches and it's easy to care when you're in one of her lectures. She's a tough grader, but she gives you a chance to rewrite, as well as heavy feedback. She's also an incredible lecturer and runs a genuinely fun, if challenging, class.
I am convinced the positive reviews written about Sims were written by Sydney herself, as she is the single handed worst professor I have ever had. She genuinely was awful at teaching the subject and is just an unpleasant person. The fact that she is the department chair also sucks bc when u have a complaint, guess who you have to complain to.
Its a shame theres no zero because Sims was hands down the worst Professor Ive had. Shes uncaring, disrespectful, and truly believes shes ALWAYS right. Expect nothing over a B or C. She doesnt care of the success of her students and shes just an overall rude teacher. Expect to read a lot because youll have to read a play in a day.
Worst English prof ive ever had. rude, unorganized, and entitled. has no respect for students and starts new essay topics before even finishing the one before. so much work and lectures are useless and extensive. dont waste your time taking this class.
This professor seems to have gotten a lot of criticism during distance learning. However I had a very positive in-person experience. She's very funny, personable, and knowledgeable. Every essay you submit receives detailed and helpful comments. The class was also very easy. If you got an A in highschool English, you will get one here.
Isn't clear when grading I never got an A. The beginning of the class was so easy with just ready and easy work. Then the papers killed me. I got a B but I worked so hard for that.
Rude and uncaring. She contradicts formal writing as well. She does not want her students to pass and makes school life as difficult as possible.
In person, Professor Sims is a fantastic mentor. Her grading is tough, but the feedback she gives is concise and full. I didn't take a normal English class with her, but she still made an effort to help make our essays better. Also, be prepared to have a ton of time dedicated to her class.
Do not take this professor if you don't enjoy writing essays! She is such a tough grader! In my class barely anyone got a C or B on any essay extremely thought grader. Can also get off-subject and never explains things thoroughly. Overall will not take again
She's a passionate teacher and gives amazing lectures. Went through a great deal of effort to create assignments that were interesting and relevant. A tough grader but will carefully annotate your work / allow you to revise and resubmit. If you want an easy A, I'd highly suggest taking an online course. Many friends have stated that it's easy.
Amazing!! SO funny. Very tough essay grader. If you're going to make a claim, make it either generic or out there. The only essay I got an A on was my claim that Olivia from Twelfth Night was a lesbian. Most everyone got Bs or lower on essays, but credit is very easily gotten elsewhere. A couple of daunting projects but graded VERY easily.
DON'T. She is horribly outdated, a really odd grader, and completely backwards. She does grading solely on paper, no grade online. This would be fine but SHE LOST OUR GRADE SHEET 15 weeks in. She said "not to write like Harvard students", grading isn't A-F it's checks based on whim. I took AP Engl in HS and everything taught there is reversed here.
She's the type of teacher who says "This class is for you" as she hands you an F on your paper with a comment too wordy but a good effort. Nasty women who wouldn't care if you've contracted cancer and will take your assignment down a couple of letter grades if you do not turn it in on time.
Promised we would be able to turn in revisions for all are papers. Due to terrible planning on her part, the class was only able to turn 2 papers in with revisions.
She has no office hours; it literally says to be decided. Awful teacher who refuses to teach and grades harshly.
This class is majority busywork and HELLL. Sims is a super hard professor and is the hardest grader ever. My first paper was graded a C, second was a D, and third was a B. She allows re-writes, but will only bring it up by a +/- or 1 letter grade. My papers didn't deserve low grades like that. Hard grader, yet I ended with an A? AVOID HER.
“Professor” Sims is extremely pretentious and needs an ego check. Entitled Karen vibes 100% Proceeded to call me dyslexic in front of the whole class, does not give notable feedback, and could care less about students lives outside of class! Don't take her you deserve better!
Sims is very upbeat and has lots of energy, however she is reluctant to consider external circumstances. She is terribly strict with her "3 missed classes before drop" policy, which adds a layer of stress for students. Essays aren't terrible, however she is very tough on grading and will not hesitate to mark you down for anything and everything.
She is literally the worst grader ever! She doesn't help with the writing process at all and relies on peer grading from other students. She allows rewrites, but is a very tough grader and will mark down everything and anything.
I am convinced this professor takes a nice long hit of DMT before each class because she is out of her mind.
I've never left a review on rate my professor before till I had Sims. Awful teacher, said the N word to me multiple times, and extremely tough essay grader. I'm not sure how I got an A in the class, but thank god I did. Majority of the class got Cs or lower, so good luck keeping a 4.0 with her.
She assigns a lot of work, and she assigns different assignments compared to the whiteboard and on Canvas. She locks Canvas so you can't see your grades. She is also rude. She gives conflicting responses over email about what you ask. She made me present even though it was optional. I tell her my concerns, and she denies it.
really tough and kind of mean. but honest and upfront. her expectations are clear. its easy to get s good grade if u put in the work and improve your writing skills. if you come up with conclusions of your own on the readings she will respect that. as harsh as she is, she will help you improve if you put in the work.
She is demanding, has high standards, and made us do a thesis again, even though we did it weeks ago. I turned in my notes for a play, and she returned them to me. She changes what work is due. She also gives harsh feedback on essays. She has a certain way of doing things. If you don't do them a certain way, you will get a bad grade.
Dr. Sims is actually a very nice lady. She's very clear on what she's looking for, always check syllabus because it's all on there. The big thing about her is she has a passion in Shakespeare and in English, and she does a good job sharing it!! The big thing is about her is common sense, ask questions and get to know her!!!
I would not retake this professor; it is too heavy to balance with your other classes. Might I add that there were some derogatory "jokes" towards marginalized groups? Professor Sims is very passionate yet very demanding with classwork. Grades are not posted in Canvas. I highly advise that if you don't want to burn out, take my word for it.
I was going to write a very real review, but I highly advise anyone debating on taking this Professor just don't do it to yourself. I warned you.
no words, don't take this professor
You couldn't pay me to take a class with her again. If you enjoy existing outside of school or sleeping ever, stay away. If you have a full course load and work a job, it's far too much. My mental and physical health have been affected by her class. Also no sympathy for a student experiencing the loss off a close family member.
Dr. Sims is one of the best professors I've ever had. Her wit and intelligence make the class extremely enjoyable and manageable. If you're struggling in this class, it's on you. She outlines exactly what she wants and grades accordingly. Just put in the work and enjoy your time in her class.
Lots of work with strict deadlines. She does not accept late work unless you have a very good reason. If you have a lot of free time and enjoy reading and note taking, take her. Otherwise I don't recommend. I will say, however, the discussions in class were fun to participate in. She has a unique perspective and opens up the conversation to all
Professor Sims runs a tight ship, and if you don't shape up, she will make you ship out. Feedback can be contradictory, hard to improve. Staying on top of work is crucial. No leniency on late work. Ask for extensions in advance or take the 0. 4 papers, 2 in-class essays, and a 15 min. presentation make the bulk of the semester.
Genuinely does not grade English according to the rules of English but rather personal style. If she doesn't like your style, it's so over for you.
Horrible teacher i did all her essays and she only likes the smart ones very bias
