the subject matter is incredibly tough, but mr. waibogha makes me want to go to class. not necesarily because he's the best teacher, and he doesn't answer questions too well, but he's too much fun not to love. drink hot cocoa, not alcohol!
sometimes its hard to understand what he is saying but overall he is a great teacher. I would recomend him to anybody.
He was always excited about hwat he was teaching. Anyone who gets that excited about algebra at 8:30 in the morning deserves to be commended. I would recommend him to anyone.
class runs long
I love this man. He is the best math teacher in the world...PS he is very very attractive
Waibogha is great. You'll actually have fun in a math class.
Awesome teacher....just remember "mathematics is the language of love" lol
great teacher :)
by far one of the best profs ive had here. always excited about calc, and has a great sense of humor. excellent teacher, take his class!! you really will understand calc well.
Excellent teacher! Very clear, helpful and fun. I highly recommend him.
He's a great teacher! I love the "family" atmosphere, and how excited he always is about calc. I recommend him to anyone and everyone.
He gives easy assignment and models the tests to his lecture,... if you can listen, you will have an A in his class. He is very passionate about teaching and it shows.
He is one of the very best teachers I've ever had. He is extremely helful, clear, and passionate about teaching. Any man that can get that excited about Calculus deserves a round of applause. In short, Wonderful teacher!!!!
He is very clear on what he teaches. I love his accent! It does not make him any less understandable, but it's still unique. I'd recommend him for any math class.
This guy rocks. You can tell he really loves Calculus. If I can get him again for all my math courses I definatly will.
Awesome teacher...get him to say these three things: derivative, assume, and the letter M
good teacher, explains topics very well
I LOVE HIM! He is soooo awesome! He is one of the best profs at this univiersity... no doubt. Just remember "Mathematics is the language of Love", "Mathematics is Beautiful", and "Pythagoreous"... He is soo awesome... I highly recommend him!!!! HIGHLY!
Sylvanus rocks! If you can take him for any class any time, do it!
He makes Math make sense. He's the best math teacher I've ever had. I plan on taking him for everything I can get him for from here until I graduate. He loves math, he loves teaching, and he makes the silliest jokes.
good teacher..would definitley recommend
Another Grizzled professor. Get him to say "trapezoid". Great way of teaching math. He tells some funny jokes. Excellent method of teaching. Highly recommend him.
He is a very enthusiastic professor who knows his stuff very well. The tests are departmental and he really doesn't have very much say with them. He does grade fairly on his part.
Never saw a man more excited about Calculus in my life. Never saw someone that knew it was well as he either.
What a comical guy!! I never thought learning calc could be this fun...I would take Calc 2 with him in a heartbeat. He is VERY enthusiastic, and EVERY question that is asked in class is clearly and completely answered. This guy is the best teacher I've had yet!
very good
He was sort of a sub for my regular Calc professor. Explained all material clearly and was alert to all class problems. Kept humor in the classroom. Would recommend him to anyone interested in Calc 1.
Great Funny Guy. One of the very best teachers I've ever had. If you have a chance, take this guy for math. Outstanding teacher! Keep it up Sylvanas, and dont forget "mathmatics is the language of love..."
Funny Funny Guy... which at least means you dont fall asleep in class. Definentaly one of the better math teachers.
He teaches different material than most 121 teachers and is unclear most of the time. After being an A math student in all my previous years, i actually find myself struggling to understand the things he's teaching. His lab's have NOTHING to do with what he's teaching.
Not very clear when he speaks. If you have him... run!!
He is kind of hard to understand. He goes too fast too. He is sort of funny at times, though.
Took his class in the summer. I took a lot of math in HS, but don't need it for a fine arts degree. This class was almost painful it was so easy, but he gave a humorous delivery of his lectures.
Awesome teacher, had him for 155 and made sure I got him again for 156
Amazing professor, fair tests, i truly look forward to going to class.
He likes to stand in front of important stuff on the chalkboard. He goes really fast and is _super_ pissy if you go to his office for something. He says if you need help to go to the math learning center, not him. All of his quizes are take home.
Boring as****.
Funny as anything!!!!!!!! Kind of helpful
The best teacher I have had so far at WVU. Calculus is not an easy subject but he breaks it down so it is as simple as possible. I would definitly reccomend him.
What a great teacher! Had a love for math like no one I had seen before. This helped pass him knowledge into his students. I highly recommend Sylvanius for any Calc class.
Great teacher, period! One of the best I had while at WVU.
the man is good.
He does everything in his power to make sure you pass the class. He's awesome!
Very good professor, but sometimes the class gets very boring. On the plus side he is very funny.
Nice Professor with intresting teaching method and nice exams with a flaxebility in the correction
Very good teacher. Gets very into his lectures. Also has a sense of humor. Tries to make everyone understand. Will explain anything without getting annoyed or anything like that.
the language of mathematics
Awsome teacher, had this class 3 times before, he helped me pass, taking him next semester for Calc 2, best math teacher i have ever had, with a reat sense of humor and very fair grading
Mr. Waibogha is an excellent teacher. Teachers like him are hard to come by in the math department. If you have the chance to take him do so at all costs. He shows a real love for the subject matter and really cares whether or not his students understand the material.
Waibogha is the single most coolest professor in the math department, shows great enthusiasm while teaching which makes the material fun to learn aaaah. i'd marry that man but that would just be weird.
good sense of humor. difficult to understand at times.
It seemed like the things he taught wouldn't be on the test. So, if you enjoy reading your math book religiously, then this class is for you.
Professor Waibogha is a fair and honest teacher and person. As long as you attend class and take note along with doing the homework you should do fine. The tests and quizzes are very fair and test you on the concepts. Overall, this was an enjoyable class for me and it gave me a new appreciation for Calculus. I received an A in this class.
Best damn teach i ever had at WVU! Hes fair and wants to help you understand the material. Sounds like the baboon off Lion King. Hes the****!
The best teacher in the math department. I will definitely try to take him for other math classes
one cool guy
Professor Waibogha is a great professor and helps keep your attention with his funny jokes.
I absolutely HATE any kind of math, especially calc, but he made it enjoyable to learn because he is so entusiastic, he really wants you to learn. He is also hilarious.
He is an AWESOME teacher! Try to take him! I'm trying to take him again next year!!
extremely helpful, great teaching method, gets into the math and makes students want to come, tests and quizzes are hard but he is a very fair grader, extremely funny guy, everyone should take him, i wish he was teaching math 251
omg!!!! he is my absolute favorite teacher!!! i had him for 155 and 156...he really gets into his lectures and really wants you to learn....he's also absolutely hilarious... for those in his math 155 for fall 06, PINEAPPLE JUICE!!!!
You have to attend class he swipes ID cards. If he didn't take attendence I would have never went to the class. He is a funny guy and can make class interesting with his antics.
Easiest class in college. It's basically elementary math, and he basically tells you everything like you've never learned it before. Mad easy, easy A and sometimes its just funny hearing this guy talk.
He was a great teacher, so helpful and so intelligent. I hope to have him for Calc two
He's an awesome teacher. I would definitely recommend him. He gets very into his teaching and it shows that he loves math. He wants you to succeed in math and he will help you do it.
this was the third time ive taken 155 and he is the best teacher ive ever had for any math class. really intelligent and knows the material very well, has a great passion for what he does
Pretty chill.. He takes his class seriously, especially attendance. Fair.
His only drawback is that he is sometimes hard to understand. He bent over backwards to help me.
He is a really great teacher. He knows the material like the back of his hand, is extremely helpful, and funny. He also has catchphrases that are really memorable and make you wanna come back to class every day, like "Let's play with some examples" and "That's the answer." You'll really enjoy his class.
An amazing teacher. Take in summer if possible. He calls mathematic that language of romance. Keeps class interesting. Wish he taught upper level math classes.
He is a really nice guy, but very annoying in class! He repeats himself ALL the time and it becomes very hard to pay attention. He is also hard to understand, but becomes easier to understand after time. Most of the time I teach myself since it becomes hard to pay attention to him saying the same things everyday. ATTENDANCE IS A HUGE DEAL FOR HIM!
Worst teacher I've ever had. The tests are basically impossible. The quizzes help a lot before the test though. Going to class is the main way to get points in the class. He's very hard to understand and is annoying. Just repeats stupid sayings and jokes over and over. There will never be a canceled class or be let out early. Just fair warning :)
Very well organized and knowledgeable teacher but kind of confusing at times. After the first month, I stopped taking notes and just went to class for attendance. It's a hard course if you don't study.
This man is truely in love with math. He knows everything there is to know about calculus. He is also very funny and very friendly.
He's a really easy professor. There are tons of online quizzes, easy labs, and free points are given out like candy at the beginning & end of the semester. I got a C on my final, and still got an A in the class. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FREE POINTS. There's really no lecture, just filling in the "study guide" during class. The textbook is useless.
People that gave a bad rating are clueless. Tests are hard but he doesn't write the tests, the math department/Dr. Ganser does. Just do and study the HW and you'll be fine. Great professor, funny, loves math, explains every detail. I strongly recommend. Don't blame the professor for things he can't control.
He does his best to explain algebra in a way that isn't intimidating. The only problem he has is needlessly repeating how to solve problems. Most of the people who need the problems repeated that much are also the people that tune you out after you mention the word 'math'.
I have him as my 126c teacher. I keep hearing people say how hard the class is, but if you do your homework problems more than once (yes, more than once) the material gets easier. The examples in the study guide help too. Study for more than an hour, I tutor for this class and we average about twelve hours a week. If you're not good at math, it can seem difficult, but there are options to help. Take advantage of the help an you'll do well.
this guy is hilarious! The exams are hard as hell if you don't do the homework like you are supposed to but he is pretty cool. He is hard to understand though so be aware of that. He also hates it when people read newspapers in his class so dont do that.
One of the hardest math classes I've taken by far. Although doing the homework, more than one is the key, you can get a decent grade in this class. In class, he has funny quotes like "Let us assume" "That is the ticket" "Suppose you're walking through the mountainlair and someone asks you..." If you study hard, this is the teacher you want to have.
Sylvanus is a great teacher. The class can be challenging but he makes it easy. He gives a take home quiz each week that has most of the answers in the back of the book. Exams are based directly from the notes. He is extremely helpful if you talk to him, but he can get carried away sometimes. Overall a very funny guy and great teacher.
Sylvanus is hilarious, and very approachable. If you ask questions, he may go on a spiel and derive everything that has nothing to do with your question, but overall he's a fantastic professor.
He is a fantastic professor. He doesnt make the exams, the department does. Sit in the front so you can read the board(his writing isnt the best)He loves math and he is HILARIOUSI would strongly recommend him for math 126. And hes also great for calc!
His accent is the best! Math 126 is overall a pretty easy/boring class but he always had a good joke about how doing your math before going out on a Friday night will make you have more fun. Take him if you can.
Awesome professor. cares about the students and wants you to succeed .
Best math teacher ever! It's evident that he's in love with calculus, which makes his teaching that much better. He is absolutely hilarious, making math innuendos all the time. Says "that's what you do" and "go home and play with these problems" in his accent.Tests are based on homework, so even though the subject can be challenging,it's easy with him
One of the best teachers in the entire math department ! Take him!!
He is very knowledge about what he is teaching. He makes it a point to make jokes and understands that most people do not want to take a math, so he tries his hardest to make it as painless as possible. GO TO HIS REVIEWS - THEY HELP!
This class is very easy if you took math up to precalculus. Passes a sign in sheet for attendance. Taking notes helps you understand how to do the work. The quizzes are the tests. Labs are helpful! If you don't understand he will help you, but ask after class for one on one. He's nice and a little hard to understand, but you learn to deal.
Hilarious teacher that really knows what he is talking about. Attendance is taken with a sheet passed around and I would definitely recommend going each day. It is easy to fall behind, but he is there for help whenever.
Dr. W. is the best teacher that I had so far. His grades and assignment s are fair enough and moderate. As long as you go to class and practice a couple of problems at home, class should be a piece of cake for you. Instruct makes sure to cover every topic in class and throws some jokes if he is good with time. Absolutely recommend him to take!
He was so unclear and really hard to understand. People would ask questions and he never actually answered the questions. He'll show you a million different ways to do a problem it becomes really confusing. There are so many points in the class though so don't worry you shouldn't receive too bad of a grade.
One of the best professors i have ever met, highly advising to take his class definately going to take him on math 156 if he is going to teach next semester please not that the department give the exams, not the instructors. his quizzes are easy if you do the homework.
Dr W. is the BEST. He's one of the most passionate professors. This man LOVES math, and he wants you to understand it. He is always ready to help. I really struggled with calc 1&2, but when I went to his office WITH QUESTIONS he really cleared a lot up for me. I still see him around and he always asks me how I am. Go to class, do HW. Great Dude.
He is a great guy funny, charming, honestly would love to have a beer with him sometime. However teaching wise, his lectures are terribly boring and i pretty much taught myself throughout the entire semester. Never gives extra credit, attendance matters but a lot of people just sign in and leave. Also he gives no homework. Not a hefty workload.
Waiboha is awesome. Easily would have gotten an A but got really sick over finals week and our last regular test and bombed them. Gives only take home quizzes. Barely any homework. Gives clear explanations and loves to joke around with the class. I would take him for any class.
I just randomly googled Sylvanius and came up with this site. That is nuts. I had him for Math 15, which was the 1st Calc class back in 1996 at WVU. I generally thought he was one of the best and most memorable teachers that I had at WVU. Very funny, and LOVES math. In reading some of the reviews, it doesn't seem that he's changed much in 20 years!
He can be hard to understand at first but you will get used to it. Go to class and take notes. You kind of have to teach yourself the material when you take the online quizzes, you get 3 attempts though. If your decent at math and make an honest effort you will easily get an A.
As long as you pay attention, the class isn't so bad. The exams are multiple choice, which has really saved my butt quite a few times. He is really cute in the way he talks about math. It's hard to explain, but the guy really is passionate about him. It just makes me sad that students leave and cause ruckus while he's still lecturing.
one of the best math professors ive had at WVU, dude is in a serious relationship with math and shows a ton of enthusiasm teaching it which always makes it a good time. DONT skip class but you wont want to anyway, you'll laugh in every lecture at how excited and carried away with a problem.
Dr. Waibogha shares his passion for math with students, which made a class I didn't really want to take more enjoyable. He's an excellent instructor, and you should try hard to go to class and collect notes. A lot of students get up and leave before he's finished instructing; sit and finish the problem with him. It helps your understanding!
He was one of the best Calc professors I've had to date. He knew the material he was teaching and showed a passion for math. He taught Calc 3 in a fundamental level and made sure that every student could understand, while also pumping up the difficulty by the end of the class. If you can choose your prof., pick him. Easy A with very moderate work.
I think Sylvanius is a really nice guy, but not a very good teacher. I went to class everyday, and still couldn't grasp what we we learning. He is hard to understand and the writing is so sloppy you can't read it. He is really funny and makes class somewhat enjoyable. But, I have never been taught math the way he does. I had to have my bf teach me.
He is a boring lecturer, but he is a funny guy. I only go to class for the attendance points. I sit in the back and watch Netflix and got 100% on every exam. Be prepared to teach yourself in that class. Also, there is homework due every sunday that is WAY harder than the exams for whatever reason, so dont let that freak you out. Labs are also easy.
His lectures are boring but funny guy. I dont really pay attention in class i just go for attendance and sit at the back watching series or using my phone. Exams are super easy, easier than homeworks. I'd recommend his class for an easy A.
I had to take math 122 as a prereq for math 126. Although the class is online and self paced, Sylvanus was there for help. So I cannot speak to his lectures, but he is extremely good at explaining things 1 on 1. He is also super funny.
A really great professor. While Math 122 is self-paced, he really helps you and encourages you to do well. Would take again.
Information wasn't hard to grasp when understood. While he was teaching, it was impossible to follow because of his dialect. Just does examples on the board until the very very last second he has.
one of the best professors i've ever had. he explains everything in class but you have to write everything with him to understand the material. his exams were kind of hard but everything was taught in class, I missed some classes so some of the questions in some of the quizes and exams I didn't know how to solve. a very good professor.
He was very hard to get along with.
Math 122 is a self paced class so there weren't any lectures. He would just walk around and if you needed help he would help you. Overall, he was very helpful however some people didn't get along with him very well. Sometimes he had a good sense of humor.
His accent is heavy, but he is extremely intelligent. Pay close attention and you'll be fine.
Hes incredibly hard to understand which made learning awful. If you have the choice dont take him
He's great! He knows exactly what he's about, he's really really passionate about it, and he's funny. He goes until literally the last second of class, and don't leave early. He notices. The tests are straightforward, but he blames all of the grading on his TAs. He's very thorough though, and his accent ISNT hard to understand. Just pay attention.
Enthusiastic about what he teaches, but is a strict professor. Don't ask repetitive questions or questions about things you should know, he will get frustrated. But he taught it well and is hard on the students only so that they can continue on to do good in later classes. You will get more out of taking him but you will be expected to respect him
I will say I still cant pronounce his last name, but otherwise hes a great teacher. He knows what hes talking about. It is kind of fast paced, but not too bad. You literally dont do much except for labs, about 6 quizzes, and 4-5 exams. Hes great :)
Does lots of example problems during classs and makes pretty good jokes. Hes a sweet guy that will help you if you ask for it. Id recommend taking him because he actually cares and wants you to succeed. Just do your best in the class and youll be satisfied with your grade!
I never understood what he was saying in class and he never understood what we were asking regarding the problems
This class couldve been so much simpler if taught differently. His lectures consist of mostly him writing words and definitions on the board with his back to the class instead of doing math problems. The material isnt difficult but if you want to do well you have to teach yourself.
It is very hard to understand the lecture. Writes a lot of definitions instead of actually solving problems. He tries to care about his students. He do push you a little bit when you ask for it. Lots of online HW, takes attendance every class. You will have to teach yourself.
If you dont pass the exams you wont pass.
Sylvanus is a funny professor however he tends to not give many examples and just writes paragraphs on the board that tries to explain the material. This can make the class seem longer than it actually is. If you take this class make sure that you study for the final because its worth 34% of the grade, which is not explicitly stated.
This class sucked. He refused to teach or explain anything when you asked him a question. His famous line is you should already know this. Sufficient to say, I felt like an idiot in every lecture and test, even though I was making As in chemistry and biology and the likes of that. DO NOT TAKE Math 153 if you can help it. But definitely not him.
Very enthusiastic about the subject, and provided good feedback. His lectures are very informational and everything he goes over is usually on the test.
I honestly loved having Mr. Waibogha as a professor. He is funny, helpful, and really enjoys what he is teaching. In my opinion, the work in this class is VERY independent, and almost everything is online. You can get tons of extra credit by simply doing homework early. Practice exams are your best friend, as most of the exams are very similar!
The worst professor I had last semester. His lectures were never clear and confusing. He would often write paragraphs on the board and expect you to understand. The book never aligned with what he was teaching either. If you fail one exam youre probably screwed too. Do not recommend
The professor is good at explaining how a problem works and how to solve it. He does give a lot of notes but they are all super helpful. If you need help with math this is the class, you have to put in the work and care.
This was the hardest math class I have taken as he would just show a ton of examples on the board without explaining them and if you miss one day you will get behind. There was a ton of homework. There were extra credit opportunities and multiple tutoring resources, though, but you will definitely have to work harder.
Amazing guy, not the best teacher. Does not thoroughly explain concepts but is organized and helpful. Take advantage of every assignment and show up!
I thought Sylvanus was good. He has an accent but if you pay attention he's easy to understand. He's also a really funny guy. The lectures were pretty clear. I went to tutoring for extra math help when I didn't understand the material.
i am going a ways back here.... i had Sylvanus for Calc 15 back in 1991. i was a double major in chem and bio and i had to knock out 2 years of calc. he was my first teacher for calculus and one of my fav teachers while i was at WVU. i think he was clear and concise during his lecture and if you did your homework, you were all set for the tests.
Waibogha was the only professor available for Summer 2023 Calc 2. He does have an accent that can be hard to understand at first, but he is insanely passionate about what he teaches and spends plenty of time making sure that everyone comprehends the material. You can't get a better professor than Waibogha for Summer Calc 2.
Took CALC 2 over the summer of 2023 in 6 weeks, hard to understand at first, but extremely forgiving when grading and offered extra credit opportunities after exams. This man does not have a class, he has a WVU family. Due dates were often pushed back to ensure everyone understood the material. However, he is terrible with technology.
This was my second time taking Calc 3 and he was significantly better at explaining the course material in an understandable way. I went to his office hours a couple of times with questions and he was more than happy to help walk me through problems that I was confused about. If I had better study habits I would have done significantly better.
Sylvanus is overall an average professor. He at times can be difficult to understand but if you pay attention it isn't too hard. Participation points via IClicker count for a good amount in this class. He was great at answering questions and cracking the occasional joke. Not a hard class or professor. I was terrible at math and still got a B.
Professor Waibogha was a very nice man. He cares for his students and makes sure that everyone is able to make ends meet. If I didn't understand something during lecture I would ask after class and he would stay until I knew what was going on. Overall a great professor and an even nicer man.
Sylvanus is an average professor. His lectures can be unclear, but attending class and using resources like the free textbook and Unstuck study helps a lot. Put in the work, and you'll do well despite the difficulty.
its hard to understand him, but he loves helping you solve the problem. he's also a diva about thing when you don't know. overall really funny.
Dr. Waibogha usually spends more time on the theorems than the actual problems. He also has a slight accent which it's nothing unbearable. My main complaints are he never has review days for any exam. With all of this said, he is not the worst options for calc 2 and he is very passionate.
Only writes and does not do example problems. It's all theorems and discovering where formulas were derived from. Does not help when I asked for help on homework assignments, and I had to pay for the textbook/homework access. Had to teach myself the course through ochem tutor. Do not recommend.
Can't understand a word he says
At first he is very hard to understand but you will get used to it. He has humor and is funny but he just writes and writes and doesn't wait for students to catch up or give them time to understand.
horrible horrible teacher if u can avoid it do not take him
Sylvanus is the goat. Very funny guy. Loves to lecture. Covers definitions and gives examples in class so you should go as much as possible.
Uses bizarre examples never waits for anyone to understand and catch up. Problems never make any sense. Very hard to understand most of the time.
Dr. Waibogha was a pretty good professor for MATH 156. He was clearly very passionate about teaching and the math that was being taught, and he truly cared about your understanding of the material. He also was very funny. Most of the quizzes were take-home quizzes, and most of the homework was all on webassign.
Waibogha is funny with lots of jokes and Waiboghisms. He mainly lectures throughout the class working on practice problems and examples for the whole class period. He is very passionate and good at explaining concepts. Some things he teaches aren't necessarily on the test.he isn't that harsh of a grader for quizzes. He helps you on them in class
Prof Waibogha is kind and funny, but not great with tech and can be blunt. His teaching style is confusing, so I went to the tutoring center daily. I got a 100 on the midterm, but stopped going later and failed the final.
he's a great guy, not so much a great professor. along with that, it's an easy class but not an easy subject. if you put in the work to understand what's going on it's easy to get a good grade. gives you up to 10% extra credit on every exam. his "lecture" is just him writing down the answers to the notes, so learning center is helpful before exams.
Genuinely cares about his students. Took AP Calc AB in high school and I was confused most of the time. However, when I learned from him everything suddenly made sense. Very good at explaining things conceptually and I really hope I get him somewhere else in my courses. Also, expect quizzes every Friday (they aren't difficult; basic questions).
great professor.
He is a great math teacher who genuinely cares about student understanding. Their lectures are engaging and often funny, which makes class enjoyable and less intimidating. While explanations can sometimes be a little hard to follow, they are patient, approachable, and willing to clarify when asked.
