This professor is the worst professor I have ever taken from. She requires students to participate in class discussions then openly humiliates and laughs at them when a he/she makes a comment. I would not recommed her to anyone.
I loved professor Newman. She was so flippin easy. If you don't want to take the final, make sure you don't miss more than 4 classes. (That's her rule). She always let us out early because she didn't have too much to say. The only thing is that class is WAY boring. I always brought my laptop and played on Facebook.
This professor is rude, not helpful, and hard. She said I did fine on all the papers and then I received a C. Take my advice and not take from her... try Pollett or Hamer.
How this woman decided to go into teaching is beyond me. I guess there were no more opportunities in the prisons. Wow! This is a new low. It's a 15 week exercise in endurance. Can you stand the stupidity? Can you keep suffering the mindlessness? She killed a lot of us on her way to a paycheck.
Criticizes student work in front of the class and encourages the rest of the class to help her criticize. She doesn't help you improve, she just likes to make herself feel smart.
I loved Professor Newman. The discussions we had in class about what we read were great! Everyone had a chance to share opinions. She graded fairly. I loved the class and would definately take from her again!
Professor Newman is pretty much the best English Teacher I have ever had. She teaches by building on concepts that she has taught making it very easy to understand new material! Her class was interesting and it made me like English. She was great, and graded very fairly with awesome critiques to help me improve.
This professor was one of the worst. She openly humilitated people and did not take anyone else's opinion. She was not helpful and very rude. Most of the classes were pointless to attend yet attendance is required. Only a few actually contained relevant information. She picks her favorites and then only listens to them. Pointless waste of time.
This professor was terrible. She openly mocks students and chooses her favorites and listens to them and only them. She has no idea how to teach and likes to make herself feel smart.
I learned a lot from this class but that does not excuse her attitude & treatment towards students. She would ridicule anyone who disagreed with her. She thrived on the class teaming up against certain individuals & was very arrogant. If you agree with her unconditionally you'll enjoy this class. If you think for yourself you will not.
Newman is extremely subjective in her grading. Also she added work on the weekend before finals without it previously being in the syllabus. Picks favorites and grades accordingly. Also her quizes are not true tests of knowledge but rather hey did you decide to pay attention to one random sentence. I do not reccomend newman for any english class.
She was utterly unhelpful, ridiculed people openly and her grading system was completely silly. In addition to being inflexible with people who were unable to complete in class quizzes. She also had a nasty habit of choosing the least entertaining material I've ever read in my life. Although I myself was never picked on by her I saw her do it a lot
This professor is fun and engaging. Contrary to the beliefs of others here, if you can back up your thoughts and positions on issues she will not ridicule you. This is a class about formulating logical and sound arguments, not just rambling off some brain dead rhetoric. Great Teacher!!!
I can't help but wonder if most of the negative comments on here are by the same person. Quit taking out your bad grade on the professor. Professor Newman is great--she is a fun person, and very intelligent and knowledgable. She's not easy, but if you work hard you'll do fine. She was very willing to answer questions and help me.
She is horrible at grading! Make sure you only write about what she agrees with or else she'll give you a horrible grade! She is not understanding at all!
Worst teacher of my college career. If she doesn't like the topic that you will be writing about for your papers you will receive bad grade.
I'm wondering if these bad reviews are a prank because I have a very hard time believing them. She never ridiculed or ripped into students in class. She does assign a lot of work but I learned a lot. She focuses a lot on you being able to credibly back up your arguments, which is what you should expect out of a 2010 class. It was a great class.
She gives a ton of busy work that isn't necessarily helpful. She also picks favorites and if your not one odds are it will reflect in your grade. Worse professor I've had.
She does give alot of work, but it is effective with what she is trying to teach you about writing.
One of the worse professors I've had in my college experience. If you're open minded and have an opinion this class isn't for you. She does pick favorites out of the class. Many people on here say you have to back up your paper false if you have an view she doesn't agree with you'll get a bad grade on that paper.
I don't understand the negative feedback on her profile. This was simply one of the best classes I have ever taken. I wonder if what students have an issue with is that she expects you to think through and support your arguments rather than merely state something with no proof. I highly recommend this class for anyone who doesn't want to just coast
If you are looking for a class that will challenge you and you love busy work this class is for you. When writing papers pick a topic that you know she will agree with you on, if not then you are in for a rough grade. oh, and she picks favorites.
overall her class was fun, with interacting and discussions of the previous chapters read during class, it made me more inclined to want to read the material, to involve myself.
This class is kicking my butt. Newman has an assignment due every other day, sometimes every day. These are assignments that take quite a bit of time so if you have a job and other classes this class will probably not work with your schedule.
Mrs. Newman is difficult. This is definitely not your run of the mill course. I've been very confused on a lot of the topics and the writing requirements. She makes you think.
Not her biggest fan. If you take her class online, she will leave you feedback on your assignment, often for the whole class to see. Which I didn't feel was very tactful of her. I received an assignment back with a poor grade. I have no idea what I did wrong, but her comment was "Really?" that was it. Thanks for that Professor.
Took the online course. Requirements for assignments are very vague. On one assignment I recieved a low grade even though I "Met the minimum requirements". If she doesnt like the direction you take the assignment, she marks you low. It makes her online class a guessing game.
Probably the worst english professor I've had ever. She is stupid and doesn't have any clue how to respect her students. She asked a student to define manliness after he clearly explained it. She will only give you a good grade if you brown nose her and worship her like a god. Trust me and everyone of the bad reviews or you will want to hurt urself
The amount of work in this class is ridiculous. Way to many assignments, 2-4 a week. Reading 20 short stories that are sometimes a 100pgs long, and 2 novels that equal over 900pgs, quizs, 2 tests, and presentation. This class/teacher is NOT a friend of the non-trad student, if you have other classes, family, and work..BEWARE of this class/teacher!!
Took the class online, and I would NOT recommend it. She gave us 3 days to read over 200 pages, and make an essay post, and comment on 3 other essays. Not a time friendly class. Also, she made a grading mistake and did not correct it or give me a reason after contacting her multiple times.
I enjoyed some of the stories we read, but felt there were way too many of them to really be helpful. Always felt rushed to the next assignment, which made it hard to really soak in the point of the work. This class had over 20 short stories to be read with discussion essays due for each, some of the short stories were a 100pgs or more,......
...This class had over 20 short stories to be read with discussion essays due for each, some of the short stories were a 100pgs or more, and 2 novels equaling over 900pgs, 2 exams, 2 quizs, and a presentation, way too much for this type of class, can't remember any core classes that I have taken that has had this much work, maybe Math, but thats it
Felt the instructor was out-of touch with her students especially when it came to the work load she had us doing. Would take a few days to get back to you when you email her. Also some assignments she asked questions about we had yet to complete, like on the midterm she asked about stories we had yet to read.
Some assignments she asked questions about we had yet to complete, so how were we to know those answers? Due dates were wrong and not clear. I would never recommend this class, and especially instructor, to any student, but especially for Non-trad students who are trying to juggle family, work, and other classes. Terrible experience.
I came into this class having a very good understanding and opinon of the subject and left the class wondering why I ever liked it in the first place. Ms. Newman has a way of belittling the students and then stringing them up for peer-based ridicule. Her instruction is not encouraging or helpful in the slightest.
Awful. She should not be able to work at a university as far as I am concerned. She doesn't care about anything you have to say and if you need help or advice she ignores you. If you are a logical person, do not take it from her.
I tried to get help and she just confused me more. She does not have a rubric or any actual grading system. She takes off points and you don't really know why. The few times she did leave comments they didn't even make sense. I did get a good grade, but almost went insane doing it. I wouldn't take a class from her again.
I understand its reading intensive course but its too much if you're going to school and working at the same time. I wouldn't recommend this class. She gave me half the points on a bunch of discussions even though I really tried. Take this class if you want to end up being really bored reading stories that are not relevant to today's society.
This professor is spacey at times and finds herself really funny. She will laugh at jokes that my class didn't even realize was even a joke. You read out of the textbook all the time and honestly I never really understood how it applied to English. Easy class. Lots of text to read and busy work.
I don't like English, but I loved her class. She made English enjoyable. He loves class discussions and never makes you feel stupid for offering an answer. She is open to a variety of ideas. She is very understanding but not a push over. I feel that expectations are very clear, as long as you attend class you'll know what was expected.
Professor Newman was a very pleasant and passionate teacher. She was always on time ready to go, and had something prepared. She tends to grade pretty harsh, and sometimes doesn't give enough instruction on assignments. She will make you earn your grade, for sure. Lectures were usually pretty interesting. Would recommend.
A fairly easy class to pass. Grading is inconsistent however. It seemed like the papers I actually tried on received low grades compared to the ones I didn't try on. Her class is also attendance based, so if you don't show up, neither will 20% of your grade.
There were no tests, but there were several writing projects. The projects throughout the semester had rough drafts, and then feedback was given. However, the final project did not have a rough draft, which made it more difficult to get feedback. Professor Newman was not bad, but she was not great either.
Newman had students write 4 writing projects, 4 mini-writing projects, a book and a reading journal (where we were supposed to write every day). There were not tests, but participation was mandatory. She gives donuts and milk. She also gives many prompts that students can choose to do the writing projects with. She wasn't bad, neither good.
There is a lot of reading that is required, If you youtube the stories you can usually get an audible book( which saved me tons of time). It is an intro to fiction but she expects you to already know how to interpret these old symbolic stories. I found it best to just google the themes and that helped me know what she was looking for.
The longest paper you'll ever write for this class is less than 6 pages. Newman, gives you many options for the assignments and it's very good at giving feedback. Participation is mandatory. Also, students were required to have a reading journal with entries no longer than a page.
Loved this class! You have to work hard and read quite a bit but if you do the work thoroughly you will do well. I took it online so I never met Mrs. Newman in person but she was very kind and helpful on Canvas and through email. Assignments come quickly after each other so stay on top of your homework! I don't understand the negative! Great class!
I struggled with Mrs. Newman because she was very unclear in her expectations, in her lecturing, and in her grading. When she asks a question, she wants you to read her mind. She expects you to think the way that she does and when you don't, things get tricky. She is a such a nice person, but I struggle with her as a teacher.
I don't know if Sylvia is threatened by her student's intelligence or is simply insecure about her own, but I could not handle her condescending looks and attitude . She will correct you in front of the class, in a degrading manner. She will scoff at your ideas. I wouldn't recommend this class if disrespectful behavior offends you.
Horrible teacher... will not consider students communications. I misunderstood something on the syllabus during the first part of class. I turned in all of my work but she did not even look at it because it was late.
I have nothing against Professor Newman; she's actually pretty nice. But the workload for this class was practically a full-time job. SO MANY ESSAYS! And we had to do a TON of reading! Plus the readings were extremely boring! She's a good professor, but she expects a lot. Be ready to work hard if you take this class.
There was way too many reading assignments that it was like you were working at a full time job and many of times she would dock you a lot of points because she didn't agree with you. I didn't like how she graded our essays she was very harsh on everything and made the assignments due at different times for each assignment making it confusing.
Poorly organized and usually very boring lectures. She left assignments for last minute and did not provide specifications. Terrible class.
This was the hardest English class I've ever taken. There are no tests, so everything is based on your papers. If you don't write toward her point of view, she will mark you down a lot. I had very different opinions so my papers were usually 8/10 or 7/10. She doesn't care about her students and doesn't give feedback. YUCK!
Fabulous teacher. She has tons of expereince and really knows her subject. She has clear expectations and grades fairly. I learned a lot.
In this class get ready to read. You'll have two short story assignments due every week with responses, plus towards the end of the year you'll read two novels in the matter of a month. There are also two essays and two exams during the semester. The class is doable if you're organized and stay on top of your readings.
She has relaxed her late work policy, which I guess was a problem for a lot. Get ready to read and write but its not hard. I loved this class and found her to be inspirational. Shes easy to talk to and understanding. If you do the work its effortless. I would take her class again.
Loved her! Interesting conversations, amazing lectures. She lightened her late work policy this semester and I am glad because there is a lot of reading and writing but this class was worth it. Shes very caring and has a positive attitude. Shes friendly, approachable, understanding and fair. Shes my favorite here at Weber!
The online course I took with her had an assignment every other night. The assignments themselves are not hard, you'll just need to work to stay on top of things. I fell behind during the semester, and she was willing to work with me. She is very passionate about what she teaches.
You are going to do a lot reading and writing in this class but the material and classroom discussions are interesting and thought-provoking. Earlier criticism mentioned a tendency to give lower grades to dissenting viewpoints but I found her to be one of the most objective graders I've had at WSU. Enjoyed the course even with the workload.
Mrs. Newman lets you work ahead, if desired. I took the block class, and it was pretty intense, but doable. Do the readings every other day, if not every day. There were two exams. The first exam was on terms, short stories, and two essay questions. The second exam was on two novels. There was a 1500 word research paper and a creative intervention.
Newman was a great professor. A bunch of the reviews say that there is too much writing, but this is an ENGLISH class. There were only three essays the entire semester, and the readings were easy. Most classes were discussions not lectures, and you are fine to miss class a few times. I learned way more in this class then any other English class.
You really only need to purchase the Short Stories Textbook, this is what most of your assignments are off of. The class is basically read a short story, write a small essay answering the question, and responding to 2 classmates' post on a discussion board. Mrs. Newman is super understanding and the stories she chooses aren't a bore! I loved it!
The class comprised of 2 or 3 short stories a week and 1 novel (usually two, but this was a block class), with a class discussion for each, which were actually super fun! There are 2 essays due by the end of the semester, but it's wise to do them before. 2 essay exams. Newman gives good and clear feedback and overall was a great online class!
Professor Newman is a great professor. Her online class has two discussion posts a week based on textbook readings, a couple of quizzes, and 4 larger writing projects. She grades very fairly and her instructions are easy to follow. She is very kind over e-mail and will help if you don't understand something. She leaves very good feedback on papers.
Prof. Newman was great! She really wants you to succeed in her class and she wants to make the material as clear as possible for everyone to understand. She might be considered a tough grader, but she makes it clear what she will be grading on and stays true to it. The class is not tough, with weekly discussions and a total of 3 writing projects.
I really liked Professor Newman as a teacher. But the class overall had a lot of group work, so you have to get comfortable really fast. Be ready to share in front of the class a lot. Shes a tough grader, but she does give feedback on assignments which is really nice. Shes always willing to help, and shes really good at emailing back!
As a person and a general teacher, she's great. I took the online course, and she was good about checking in with us regularly, providing feedback, and being an overall nice person. The main critique I have is the discussions seemed like busy work and we were expected to know things she hadn't taught. This made the papers very difficult.
You're required to buy 3 textbooks, I have only used them once so not worth it. Every week we do 2 readings for the class to which vary from 12- 35 pages. I took this class because it sounded easy yet she grades really tough. I have answered all of the discussions and yet she still only gives me part of the grade because it wasn't what she wanted.
She tends to be a very critical grader. Even if you cite evidence and have a strong argument, she'll say you're wrong if she doesn't agree. You HAVE to do the assignments early or you won't get full points. She docked me because I turned an assignment in on time. Yes, you read that right... I turned it in the day it was due, hours before it closed.
This course was a lot more difficult than it needed to be. Prof. Newman is a tough grader and will even dock you points just because she doesn't agree with a statement you have made. She'll also dock if you don't turn the assignment in early (even if it is on time still). Tons of reading. Towards the end of the sem. we were reading ~120 pages/week.
If you are shooting for an A and you are not a female working towards an English major then do not take this class! Sylvia is a poor grader and her critiques are arbitrary and will knock you down full letter grades for things that are not in the grading rubric but pulled out of her butt that morning.
I took this class for English 2010 and her class is really interesting, however she grades very critically.
Her assignment's due dates were not properly set up in Canvas. Feedback was not helpful or constructive. Seemed to be more involved with talking about philosophy rather than writing or english. I did not learn anything and will need to take another course to better my knowledge. Waste of time, credit, and tuition.
Honestly, I'm a better reader/writer as a result of taking this class. Her office is always open and I'll wear my B+ (A- if this last paper hits) with honor. She challenges you. I really respect that.
This was the worst experience I've ever had with a teacher. The class was hard, because of her blunt grading. She is impossible to please, she won't like any work you submit or any essay topics you choose. She also doesn't respond to emails. Don't take a class from her.
The discussions feel like busy work and have no real implication or help toward the final projects and papers. Her feedback is a little passive-aggressive and she grades tough. Called my English paper, which I had written for that class, "a warmed-up sociology paper" and claimed I "dove-tailed" my project, which I don't know what that means.
I think while slightly tough she did a good job at trying to get the students involved in class. she had zero late policy which is nice especially if you need to revise something. I think she is pretty simple as long as you ask questions. there was reading due for each class but it only took 30 minutes to do most of the time.
Professor Newman is great! I'm shocked her rating is as low as it is. Her classes were always entertaining and she always gave kind feedback. Attendance is important, but if you show up and apply yourself this class shouldn't be that difficult. If you have a problem, she is more than willing to help if you talk to her.
She is very strict and a harsh grader. She doesn't include rubrics so you don't know what you're getting graded on and then she docks a lot of points for missing something that she didn't say was needed. She was not an easy to work with professor either.
Don't take a class from her she is the worst grader! She grades based on random things and doesn't tell anyone what she wants in papers. It's really hard to please her.
She repeatedly marks things as AI after proving you wrote it yourself. She grades hard even after you follow all the rubric. She does not communicate well in email and is rude.
Her rubrics aren't very clear. I messed up one of my papers because of that, but she let me redo it. She is very passionate about literature and encourages you throughout the class. Overall, I had a good experience. I do wish that she gave us more time to read the two novels, though. The last month felt very rushed.
