Friendly, approachable, VERY EASY!
easiest class ever, and actually interesting. I got an A+ in it, and it actually made me decide to switch my major to Poli Sci. I wish she taught more poli sci classes!!!
very easy class, very fair, doesn't take attendance, i got an A plus
Great time for sleeping or playing on the computer. This class is so easy, I could have taken it three years ago and aced it just as well as I'm doing now.
Great person, easy course! earned an A attending once a week and not reading the book
Not as easy as everyone else says. If you drank away most of your hs poli sci knowledge like me your ****ed. Need to either do all reading or go to all classes and take notes to get a good grade. I did neither and barley passed first test.
Easy A, yet learned a lot
She was so hard. Her exams were ridiculous
I thought she was great! She made a topic I thought I would hate really interesting. Information and exams are very straightforward. She's not difficult at all, I got an A+.
this professor seens easy, though, her tests are very very hard. She doens't give anyone extra-credit. Do not take this professor on Summer. She gives 70 questions exam, half of that are short answer questions. She is clear when speaking, however her tests are not.
Not that bad. She explains very good, but her exams are confusing, 3 choice multiple-choice. You have to go to class to get a good grade
She is not a difficult professor; her multiple choice tests are tricky -- you have to attend class, take good notes and read the chapters b/c even though i would do that, on the tests i would end up getting B's b/c they're tricky. However, i would reccommend this prof for this class.
she's not as easy as everyone says she is. i went to almost all the classes, did the reading, and still got a B+. the multiple choice on her exams ****ed me up all the time.
boring and monotome..skip that**** if you have her friday mornings
very good communicator, but exams are kindof hard
she is a nice teacher. the tests are long for a 50 minute class. you have to read through all 3 answers to make sure which one is the real correct answer.
So helpful and nice that it's not even funny. Can get a little boring here and there. You could do worse then this easy A.
Don't take her. People say she's easy but that's because she doesn't count attendance or give homework. She only has three tests, but the multiple choice is really tricky. She doesn't explain clearly what's on the best and is really boring to listen to! I had to drop her class. Try to avoid at all costs!
She's an interesting lecturer. Oftentimes she asks questions which no one can answer. Also her tests aren't the best. They're rather hard with trick questions. It doesn't help that there's only three. I got a B in the class so it's not too bad.
If you think her lectures are boring, then you shouldn't be taking political science classes. Just like any other class-you have to read and go to class and take good notes. Three test with 50 questions and three multiple choice answers to choose from. If you attend class and read, you should get an A.
This woman is the devil. Her class is absolutely boring and puts trick questions on the test.
Interesting lecturer, if you ask her questions she will answer, read the book material and the handouts because she asks question from those as well as her lectures. The tests are really easy, 50 MC with 3 choices (normally one is completely wrong). If you think her tests are hard then you just don't know the material.
Her lectures are pretty interesting and easy. If you think she is boring it is simply because Pol. Science is not the subject for you. I thought the book was a waste of money because she covers most of the material in her lectures and handouts. Only 3 tests, fairly easy. Some of the questions can be a bit tricky. Overall good class and good teacher
Interesting class, not difficult. I'm a former poli sci major so I did hardly any studying here, but even if you're not a big fan of the subject just going to class and paying attention should be enough to get no less than a B.
GO to class! take notes and read her handouts and you'll get an A. She doesnt take attendance but her tests are what she says in class. She's a good professor and overall its a good class if you enjoy Pol Sci.
horrible. don't take if you want to pass pol 213. Any one else would due.
Very Hard Class. Avoid at all costs. Least favorite of this semester.
Test are impossible and do not reflect anything covered in class. I highly recommend taking another teacher.
Thompson is awesome. This is the most boring PoliSci class but she makes it barable. The tests aren't hard if you've gone to class and read the handouts. DON"T buy the book. If you are conservative in anyway you have to hold your tongue because she's pretty liberal but you can hold back and get an easy A
Favorite teacher at UM by far. She makes the lectures as interesting as possible and encourages class participation. If you go to class and take good notes there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. Don't need to read the book at all!! Just the notes and handouts. Awesome teacher! Would definitely recommend.
class is boring, seems like it lasts forever, teaches every class from start to finish never get out early, but shes very nice and the exams are pretty easy.
Great pofessor! Very interesting if your into what she's teaching. Recommended to all
Easy class. Good professor. She can be dry and those 50 minutes never end quick enough, but she makes sure you know the material for the tests. No book reading involved.
Sylvia Rocks! One of the best teachers at UM. She is so down to earth (look at her tattoos)! She is kinda monotonous and repeats a lot of things she said, but that is a good thing cause then it gets stuck in her head. I really enjoyed her class. She tries to stay politically neutral but she is clearly Liberal
Easiest class I've taken at UM thus far. Just go to class and write down what she says. She's very monotonous so it can get boring but stay awake because her tests are exactly what she says in class. Pay attention to detail because she does! Her tests are multiple choice with 3 options but there all very alike. If you study, you'll know the answer
She is an awesome professor and extremely responsible. She is very knowledgable and can answer whatever question you ask. Her classes are long, sometimes boring, but very useful. I highly recommend her!!!
Helpful and concise professor. Book is not necessary. However, attempt to attend every class. Otherwise, make sure whomever you copy notes from is good at taking them. Everything in the tests is in the lecture and handouts. Study them well. She never lets out early, in fact, be prepared to stay an extra 5 minutes or so if she's running behind. She
very tricky questionsss!! and she is very boring!
great!! clear straight to the work with her lectures....a must take
I took her during my freshmen year. She was great! She is very helpful and all of her tests are multiple choice, however be prepared to read a lot on the test. Her tests were like reading a novel. Overall I liked her and the class.
This woman knows her history. Extremely smart and able to teach. Attendance is not mandatory, but HIGHLY suggested as it will save you from having to open the text. Class is kinda dry, however she does her best to draw students in. Overall great teacher!
easiest class at UM- if you're a US citizen you should already know everything in this class
Presents material very clearly. Gives handouts and sends emails telling what to study for test and clarifying ambiguous terms
Seems strict and even scary on first appearance but turns out to be quite a pleasant person to listen to. Is enthusiastic about subject matter, easy to understand, and happy to answer any questions. Exams are on the difficult side, not the least because many of the questions are mind-bogglingly long.
I really enjoyed this class.I had it M-W-F and missed about 1 class/week. Attendance is not mandatory but you should get the notes from someone if you miss class. I got B's in all my tests studying the night before (and not too much). Overall easy class, great teacher, and very interesting. I'm an international student and learned A LOT with her:)
She's very nice, if a little dry. I tried to attend because, you know, at $3000 a class I figured I should show up, but you really don't have to. If you miss class, definitely get notes from someone else. Easy A, especially if you have any knowledge whatsoever about American government.
by far the best professor! if taken in summer two exams, final is not cumulative...take A LOT of notes and just study all your notes before the exams, she is the BEST - knows her stuff!! Great Professor!!
Excellent professor, she's helpful and knows her stuff. Attendance isnt mandatory but her exams are based on her lectures for the most part, take good notes. Don't really need the textbook but glancing at it wont do harm. She gives 3 exams and each question only has 3 choices but they're very wordy. Definitely recommend her
Excellent professor! Going to class is not a chore because she is a great lecturer and she is always crystal clear. She will repeat difficult concepts 2-3 times to ensure that everybody understands. Her tests are extremely easy, but she is a tough essay grader. 3 tests, 1 essay, each worth 25%. I definitely recommend her to anybody, she's great!
very nice lady. she loves it when you ask questions and prompt discussions during the lectures. if you go to class you'll be good. the content is super simple. every test is all multiple choice with only 3 answer choices.
She explains everything very clearly, and her tests are pretty easy...they're straight off her lectures and from the book (though you can get by easily without the book). Her paper's the hardest thing, but as long as you answer the question, you'll be fine.
i hate this woman. She pretends to be nice but she's not. She is a mean professor. I do not recommend. Her grade range is too narrow. Take it at your own risk
Talks and talks and talks and talks. Notes never written on the board or anything so it's hard to know what's important. Not very clear about what will be on tests and no test review. Get out late EVERY day guaranteed because she never stops TALKING.
A+! If you just read the book you will do okay, if you just go to class (and pay attention with strong note-taking) you will do great, and if you do both of the above you will get an A+ for sure! Exams are 99% STRAIGHTFORWARD, honestly. Thompson is great professor with a sly sense of humor, although she does talk a bit much. Seriously, TAKE HER!
pretend to be nice but not
She is an AWFUL teacher. NO test review, nothing written on the board or powerpoint or blackboard, just her lectures that go on and on and have countless irrelevant tangents. She's absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. Avoid her please.
Talk , talk and more talking. Her lectures are boring but only 3 exams count for this class.
if you can just go to every class and sit there, you'll get a guaranteed A. tests are incredibly easy and the final isn't cumulative. I def recommend for an easy A with pretty interesting info. She does write stuff and gives out test reviews so everyone before me probably just did horrible in the class. She's not that bad at all
Extremely easy professor. All multiple choice tests with one clearly answer and 2 clearly wrong answers. Class is a bit boring, but if you can sit through it, it will be worth it. Always willing to help. Final is not cumulative. She gives extremely detailed study guides. Definitely recommend!!
Informative lectures, yet very boring. Tests are hard, too hard for a Pol Sci class.
DO NOT TAKE HER unless you are amazing at paying attention, can make the time to read the book chapters (even though i dont know what in the book is going to be focused on on the test)... idk how im doing so bad but only 3 tests whole semester so if u do bad ur screwed. thought itd be an easy class but no, dont take it!!!!!!!
BORING! she speaks like she is about to fall asleep. her tests are long and some questions are confusing, but if you go to class and, even if it is REALLY HARD, take notes you should be fine. if you are not required to take this class, don't take it, extremely boring class.
Very interesting class! She knows her stuff! Very prepared. Go to class and you will have zero problems
The class is interesting but her test are very difficult. She's into fooling her students what will be on the test. If you are good at paying attention the whole time while taking notes and is willing to know the textbook word for word then you'll be ok.
The most boring class I have ever taken. She is very knowledgable, but incredibly monotone. Tests aren't HARD if you go to class and pay attention (the hardest part)... Her wording is odd on several questions, which is the only thing I found difficult about her tests. If you can avoid it, don't take the class
Easy course, she allows to miss 2 classes so attendance is pretty important. Most say she is boring, but she is very clear and knows exactly what she is talking about.Very helpful, sticks to the agenda and tests are straightforward. Tests are piece of cake if you go to every class and take notes. Her studyguides are awesome.Highly recommend.
She is the easiest teacher ever IF you can bring yourself to go to class. She stands and lectures the entire class- it is painfully boring. However, the tests are extremely easy and based on the handouts she gives. The book does not help.
I love Mrs. Thompson's classes, if you go to the lectures and take notes, you will learn a ton and do well on the tests. What I loved about her is that she kept me guessing as to what political party she belonged to. She also has a great dry wit to her, and he's very knowledgable. Absolutely wonderful course and professor. Also, there was no stupid busy work, just the reading, lectures, and the exams.
great prof. very very simple course if you attend lectures. if you take notes in lecture and study those notes you have no reason not to get an A. gives a compressive study guide and tests are very clear.
Take Thompson! You have to write down everything she says in class to do well, but if you have good note taking skills class is very easy. You cannot skip and expect to do well, but if you show every day there'll be no problem. Memorize your notes for the 3 tests in the course, and they'll be easy As. Final isn't cumulative.
Thanks to all smart people that are the only one that took the time to write good things about her I got a bad grade. I got a C. Her test are very hard. Not clear of what to study. If you have taken any other government class maybe it would help. But if you have never taken a government course then don't take her. Her test are extremely hard.
Very Tough. Currently a 1L at GW Law, found out that most of what Prof. Thompson taught is completely irrelevant to the field of law. I advise anyone considering law school to take Con Law IN LAW SCHOOL. Do not fall into the trap: "taking this class will prepare you for law school" Avoid this class!
Mrs. Thompson is the coolest lady. She walks into class smiling, dressed to the T, with her super cool sunglasses on. She greets us every class saying I hope you've been having a fabulous day. She is SO smart!!! I want to be this woman when I'm older!! You have to go to class to pass, bc her lectures are pretty much what the tests are based on!
Her lectures are long and boring, but going to class is the ONLY way you'll ace the tests. The tests are based off of what she says in class and the handouts, so they are very straightforward. If you go to class and be engaged with her, write down everything she says, and read the handouts, the tests will be no problem and you'll get an A.
If you're gonna show up to class, take her.
Dr. Thompson is my favorite professor at University of Miami. You do have to do the reading and show up to class, but if you do those things, you will be perfectly ready for the exams. Her lectures are perfectly to the point and she has a wonderful dry humor. I also took her American Politics class my first semester. Great class.
She is honestly the best. I want to be her when I'm older. This is the third class I take w/ her. You MUST go to class and pay attention, but I personally find it easy because she's interesting! If you're even remotely interested in the subject, you'll enjoy her classes. Attend, pay attention and write everything she says, and you will be fine!
Prof. Thompson is the best. She comes in to class and basically just talks about the subject for the next hour and is always interesting. Her class is super easy. Never cracked the textbook and hardly took notes and cruised to an A.
She knows everything about Poli Sci. It's almost like she was best friends with the founding fathers. Her tests are difficult because it's not just on her lecture but from the book. There are essays due with every test. And she takes roll and docks you. Read the book before class and answer her questions she says out loud and she will love you.
She is amazing but you have to put the work in if you want the A. If the subject interest you I would definitely recommend taking it with her- I personally love her and will be taking another class with her but class is no walk in the park- she is very very knowledgeable!
She's just a cool lady. The class isn't too difficult and material is interesting. The lectures can be a little dry but she's just adorable and so sweet which makes up for it. She walks in every day and says "Well I hope you're all having a fabulous day so far." She's awesome, highly recommend!
She is the best! I had her for 2 classes and I got A's in both. I did all the reading and got good grades on the tests. She takes role in the classes I've had with her. Honestly I missed a lot of class in POL315 and still did well but I wouldn't suggest it.
Dr. Thompson is a straight thug. Like Tupac and Biggie. She's the best professor at UM, and she's the reason I switched my major to poli sci. Don't take her class if you're a lazy waste of space, she doesn't have time for your crap.
Dr. Thompson is a very good professor. Her tests are very easy as long as you show up to class and pay attention. She does not use powerpoints, so you have to take your own notes. You're allowed up to 2 missed classes. It is honestly an easy A, you just have to put some effort into it.
Professor Thompson is one of the better political science professors. Her classes only consist of lecture and can be boring from time to time but all questions on her exams are from lectures. Three exams determine you're grade so do well, she also considers attendance and participation while grading. She gives you an outline of each test too
Thompson is a very straight-forward professor. Her classes are 99% lecture, not really any discussion. This can get really boring, but it depends on your learning style. I read the textbook and the lectures were exactly the same as the book. Participation grade is attendance-based (can miss 2 classes), and there are four tests.
Dr. Thompson is a boss. She knows what she's talking about and her classes are so enjoyable. Write down everything she says and you will do fine on the tests. Textbook is not entirely necessary.
She's very approachable and knowledgable but your grade is based only on 3 tests and nothing else. The tests are super dense and it takes a lot of time to read each question. It's purely lecture, with just a few handouts in each chapter. If you find it difficult to just speech with no powerpoint or tangible notes, I wouldn't take her.
As someone fluent in politics, I learned nothing new in this class. However, I ended with a B+ because she lectures and covers SO much material and then puts the most obscure T/F questions about specific laws on the exams. If you miss a class, you will not know at least 2 Qs on the test. She is super picky about short answer Qs too.
This is the third class I took with Thompson. Usual grading of 4 tests each making up 1/4 of your total grade, with 15% of the last test counting from attendance (taken every class) and, different than her other classes, participation. Unlike her other classes, you should get the textbook. Still, she is interesting and very knowledgeable.
She is a great professor. Highly recommend.
Sylvia Thompson is the best lecturer I've ever had. She is clear and precise; you always understand what she is saying. I learned so much in this class.
This woman is the best professor ever. Intelligent and nice. She knows everything and if you listen to her, you will succeed.
Fine professor. Lectures may get a bit boring and repetitive but she knows what she's talking about. I wouldn't mind having her again. You have to really like the subject, though.
She knows what she is talking about and the class is overall enjoyable to go to everyday. There are only three tests throughout the whole semester and that is it. However, if you pay even a little bit of attention, you will likely be fine.
Prof Thompson is one greatest professors to ever teach me. she is very clear in she wants you to know. show up and write down whatever she says even if she coughs write down *coughs* because it'll probably come up on the test. it is not an easy A class as much as it is a well-earned A. changed my major to PoliSci after taking her class.
I cannot stress how much I loved Thompson, she's funny and sweet and cares for her students. She's precious and honestly my favorite professor I have had so far. Be warned though, you must do well on all 3 tests or you won't get an A. Read the hand outs before each test and take good notes because her lectures are not written down in a power point.
Said the Civil War was not about slavery but was about states rights. Why do you think they WANTED states rights? Said her relatives were Civil War veterans so she knew it was true. Everyone was falling asleep in her class because she is not engaging. Tests are dense.
If you took AP Gov, do not take her. You will not learn anything, and she is extremely boring. Her class was based off only three exams, which are 70 T/F questions, so I thought that was very unfair. She's really nice and cares about her students, though. If you study the handouts, you're good (no need for textbook).
Prof Thompson is such a sweet person. She definitely cares about her students and her profession; she is very smart! Your grade is solely based on three exams, which kinda sucks, but the exams are very straightforward and as long as you come to class, you will be fine. Although it can be boring, she does a great job explaining things. She's great!
Loved taking Thompson for POL 201. She's a great professor, cares about her students, and tells great stories. If you took AP Gov, this class will be a piece of cake. Tests are super easy, 70 T/F questions. 3 tests, no other graded work, meaning you have to do good on the tests to do well in the class. There is an EC opportunity as well.
she is super nice but the material is difficult and not useful in the slightest. 4 exams that comprise your grade that are impossible to pass. don't take if you can help it.
The class is pretty straightforward: show up, learn about Supreme Court cases, take 4 exams (which are the only grades in the class). The open response questions are honestly quite difficult, and she can grade quite harshly. But, she is incredibly knowledgeable, sweet, and caring. I've learned a lot.
Criteria is very straightforward and the class is very easy to pass. You are graded by 3 exams composed of true/false questions. It is very easy if you listen in class. She is very chill and sweet. I recommend her 100% The textbook is helpful but not necessary at all.
Only 3 exams with 75 true or false questions but some were worded weird which made me question my answers a lot of the time. I will say I'm not that interested in politics which is why I didn't get much of what was taught so if you're the same, don't take this. You have to pay attention a lot to fully understand. She is funny and sweet tho
Attendance isn't mandatory but there's potential to get your grade rounded up if you miss 2 or less classes. The entire class is graded on 3 100-point true or false tests with 1 optional extra credit essay worth 10 points. Super easy, definitely recommend.
She is a kind professor but the course is only 3 tests with heavy material. I do not recommend her if you want an easy A.
Although attendance isn't required, you should attend every class. There was a book required, but I've never used it and have gotten 100s on every exam. All you need is to write down everything she says in class and READ HER STUDY GUIDES. The topics they talk about are ALL you need to know for the test.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This class was very tested heavy with only 3 tests and that was it. It is a very boring class as well. Every class consists of a long lecture with note-taking. I do not recommend this class!! Especially if you are looking for an easy A. Just take something else that is worth your time.
As someone who is interested in American history and political science, I was extremely excited to take this class, but sadly, that was a grave mistake. Sylvia is one of the most boring lecturers I've ever met, and I couldn't recommend her less. She gives exclusively T/F exams, which are extremely difficult. She also requires the textbook.DONT TAKE
Definitely don't take this professor if you want an easy A. This professor does nothing but lecture with photos up on the board for hours at a time. There is only three super vague T/F exams that she grades super harshly even though the questions are unclear. I have literally watched her turn passionate polisci majors off their major entirely.
She has oddly specific study guides and tests, and the class is lecture-heavy. Run for the hills, don't take this class.
I signed up for this class because I was considering adding Public Admin as a second major. However, after taking her class for one day, she made me hate political science, and I never wanted to touch it again. She is strict with grading and gives super long exams. If you want to take a POL class, don't take it with her.
Professor Thompson truly is my favorite teacher I have had here. Her passion for the subject shines through her lectures. She is clear about what will be on the exams and sets them up so you will do well if you pay attention in lectures and follow the handouts. Ultimately learning such a large amount of material was fairly easy with her.
I learned so much in this class that sticks with me today, 5 years after taking the class. I could not recommend Dr. Sylvia Ann Thompson enough. She taught me everything about how our political process works.
One of the most knowledgeable professors (and people) I have ever met. You can ask her any question and she will likely know the answers off the topic of her head. This class is definitely not a joke and I probably spent around 20 hours studying for each exam but she is always available for office hours and a pleasure to talk to.
Some lectures were a bit repetitive but she goes over the material clearly and slowly. Tests are true or false questions, but if you study using the handouts you'll be fine. Textbook is required but reading is not necessary to do well in the tests.
Professor Thompson is very nice and knowledgeable. Your grade is made up of 4 tests which are very hard and she is a tough grader but you get extra credit for attendance if you dont miss a certain amount. Just study a lot beforehand and you will be fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took it as an elective and she ruined my passion for political science. So much material to study.
All the tests are true or false questions and the questions are not difficult. This is a core class for political science majors, so it covers basic concepts about American government. She explains the material clearly, and if you attend her office hours, she will answer any questions you have.
Studying for these exams was def a grind. Exams are True or False that's it (approx. 68ish questions). Grade is based on only 3 exams, final isn't cumulative. If you're willing to put in the work, take her. Take advantage of office hours, as she answers questions clearly. Study her slides and HANDOUTS, take notes on all of her slides!!
Dr T is a really nice and funny lady. Her class is awesome and will teach you a lot. Its 3 exams true or false. If you go to class, take notes, and read the handouts you will do great. Highly recommend her.
