I think he's a great prof. his lectures are actually enjoyable for a nice change from other courses. he gives interesting examples, and is pretty fair in his marking.
Best prof I've had yet. So helpful, most willing of any prof to help out, and to make sure you understand the material, not just memorize it. Plus very easy on the eyes.
Great Prof, he's really into everything he teaches and the material for the most part is really interesting. He's pretty cute too!
I actually enjoyed going to this class! He made evolution so much more interesting than it could have been!
Lectures were interesting, and the material stimulated excellent online discussions. Perhaps my only concern with Dr. G was that he was remarkably arrogant. It's difficult to describe, but he seemed to think he was the best and brightest on campus. He's insecure so I'm pretty sure he will read this. Dr. G.: Tooting your own horn is never cool.
He was a great prof, but I do agree that he did have a touch of arrogance (or something), but I suppose that I might be if I had accomplished as much too.
He is really funny and he knows his stuff well. One of the best profs I have had!
he is arrogant and its a distraction from teaching. he needs a lesson on making effective lecture slides and teaching. and i'd give it to him because i could do a better job with no prior understanding of the material!I fell asleep on the uncomfortable desks EVERY class. run far far away if you dont need to take this class. you wont learn anything!
His lectures were always super interesting, and it was great how he'd use current research in lectures and discussions to let us know what's going on in the world.
Definitely the most useless class ever. This proffesor is a bad prof good luck to all of you who take his class. He also gets mad when you go for help but he looks good in a wet suit chasing mussels in the streams, lakes and rivers of Ontario. Definitely the life I would want to live!
i like him, he is really clear in his lectures and the content is not too difficult, and i personally find it super interesting. this is probably my best class.
This course is a joke, and this prof takes everything wayyyyyy to seriously. The midterms do not reflect your knowledge of the subject at all, and the seminars are pointless and worth tooooo much of your final grade. This class is a waste of my life.
Dr. Gregory is an excellent professor and his lectures are interesting, organized and presented clearly. I was frustrated with the format of this particular course, but as a teacher, he is doing an great job.
Dr. Gregory is a good prof and his lectures are interesting, organized and presented clearly. I was frustrated with the format of this particular course, he was kind of rude when answering questions on the discussion boards
Really knowledge and active prof. He put a huge amount of work into putting the online material together, and he always stresses the easy-to-miss subtleties of the content. A few people say he comes off as arrogant, but after seeing the kinds things of self-important students demand on the discussion board, I'd say he has the patience of a saint.
Easiest course of my life. Complete waste of time.
I was looking forward to this class. This prof is so arrogant i couldn't stand listening to his lectures. The class material was interesting minus the 4 weeks we spent learning a mussels. He was not helpful at all, down right rude. No one ever participated in the 'class discussions' because it was a lecture of 600. Don't take this class.
Not very good. TOTALLY arrogant and unhelpful
I liked it. He was good at explaining, the class was interesting and he was always very prepared. I never thought it was arrogant although thinking of it now i could see how it could be perceived that way, i thought he was very nice!
He's great and super helpful .The midterm is extremely fair. He loves what he teaches, and is a very enthusiastic lecturer. I love going to class, despite the fact its at a crappy time in war mem.
Very arrogant. Extremely rude when you ask for further clarification because he's unclear. He insists on using big, scientific words which are just annoying. Full of himself and wants people to know he's smart.
Friendly during lectures, but NOT helpful at all when asked questions in online discussions. No outline/help in preparing for midterms, and had very high expectations for answering on the midterm - answer key was ridiculous and unreasonable for a 50 minute in class midterm. Didn't mind the lectures but not a fan of him at all now.
Really good prof! He spends hours on the discussion boards answering questions and gets back to you quickly and effectively. Great lecturer as well.
Arrogant and very full of himself, to the point that it is distracting from the lecture material. No help on discussion boards. Just quippy, sarcastic remarks that he somehow mistakes for humor. Notes are fairly well organized and the course material was manageable.
His midterm requires a lot of knowledge of evolutionary terms, know those for sure. His exams are different than most others I've taken, but after taking the midterm I was fine for the final exam. Multiple choice questions are very difficult and confusing. Overall, he was still an engaging prof. He may be arrogant, but he knows his field well.
Not that bad of a public speaker/ lecturer but honestly useless on the discussion board. If you ask him a question about something that was done in class he will NOT answer you at all. Really disappointed with his behaviour considering this is post secondary education. Just overall useless and I would NOT recommend him to anyone EVER
The material covered in class is supposed to help your understanding but it actually makes you question why you showed up. Never missed a class and studied for hours and the midterm and exam is crazy someone who didn't even take the class would have the same chance at the mark. The exam was a guessing game + any mark received will be pure luck.
He was arrogant and condescending in lecture& honestly rude on the online discussion board. I would never take his class again. A lot of class time was wasted talking about the prof and was not helpful for the exams. The exams were impossibly short and being at every lecture didn't improve your chances at doing well, just a guessing game.
Dr. Gregory was a bit condescending. He constantly was lecturing us on how bad class attendance was and how our marks would suffer because of it. He was saying this of course to the individuals who did show up to class which didn't made any sense. The final exam was very difficult, probably as an attempt to lower the incredibly high class average
Is it really necessary to reduce these students to tears? You are not a professor you are a dream crusher! You should be trying to teach them not causing them to jump off the nearest bridge.
If the class wasn't boring or ambiguous enough in the first place, a rude condescending prof doesn't help. There were multiple incidences of students posting fair questions on the discussion board and being completely shut down with a rude answer from him. Would advise not taking this class if you do not need it. Would have given 0's if I could.
I found that Dr. Gregory was very arrogant. He would often fail to answer students questions on the discussion board or would answer them in an arrogant manner often belittling the student. This course focuses way too much on hands on learning and critical thinking however the exams are very vague as you are given ambiguous mc questions.
This class made me cry more than once. I am a 90's student and I have never been faced with class that despite the amount of effort you put towards learning the material and studying you still cannot manage to achieve a mark higher than a 60. Whereas other students can walk into the exam without studying and ace it.
It was never clear to me what the main points or even topic of the lecture was. You can't study for the midterms. He is way too focussed on "applying your knowledge" without actually teaching a concept. Only time I've wished for a textbook to use for clarification. Posts lecture slides a week later. Classes don't add much for me.
He seems like a nice enough guy, and he's a good speaker, but you don't learn much in the lectures. Any kind of learning is in the online material and research to answer homework questions.
Almost impossible to take notes in class. He tries to 'apply' knowledge way too often, and doesn't really explain and go over concepts with the class. His lack of theory based teaching in class makes it almost impossible to have material to study. I do not recommend taking his class.
very focused on applying concepts and critical thinking, you never know what mark you are going to get on the exams
Loved this class and him!
Exams consist of the material in the online quizzes, not lecture material. I only go for the clicker questions.
He's literally a crybaby. Gets mad at students, so stupid. Like who cares if they are talking, they're paying tuition and you're getting paid bank. Just teach the damn class.
This is the most fked up class I have ever taken here. Its like no matter how much you study, u still cant manage to do good on midterms and the exam. The resources are also not enough for us to fully be ready for the tests. The prof also barely replies to student's questions. I wouldnt recommend this course unless ur required to take it.-me/friend
Don't take BIOL 1070 unless you're required to. Dr. Gregory's teaching style is not effective. He tries to apply A LOT of critical thinking to questions, but he often won't tell you what the correct answer is. Although some questions on midterms are similar to ones he gives in lecture, he simply is not great at teaching concepts at all.
If you dropped this class, like this ratings please. :)
He's a smart person but kinda condescending. He's one of those people who says that the thinking process is more important than the answer. But in that case, we should be evaluated on our thinking process and not the answers. In tests, all the answers could be right if you think about them. Do a lot of past papers if possible.
For Bio1070, this prof was adequate. I didn't have an issue with his teaching style but more with his attitude. This is a course that has two profs and he would often dominate the lecture and talk over the other prof. He is an okay prof and knows what he is talking about but I did not find him enjoyable.
Literally showed polar bears falling from the sky. Spent 1/3 of the semester taking about freshwater mussels. Just a strange course. No clear way of studying as the very few practice problems do not have answers (he will not give them). Some of the questions on exams seem to have multiple right answers though you need to choose the "best" answer.
Very confusing class. There is no way to study, as the practice questions from counselling do not have answers or steps on how to solve them. Even after students ask him for clarification, he would still say "choose the best answer". Genuinely think he spent more time making his Wikipedia page than teaching students how to succeed.
His notes are confusing unless you listen to him mention things that are crucial. That being said, he never gives you an opportunity to test your knowledge and reinforce concepts until the midterm and final. It really is tough unless you find external materials to help yourself because he isn't the best professor in lectures either.
Great class, one of the most interesting for sure. Certainly manageable to get a great mark if you put in some work. He seems to really care about students well being and is always doing things to help!
He really cares about his students and wants us to do well. He listens to students requests and concerns and makes changes accordingly. I found this course interesting and not overwhelming or too stressful! The notes can be a bit confusing but overall a really good course with Dr. Gregory as your prof!
Great professor. The content isn't hard and his quizzes and activities are not bad either. It is easy to do well on these. He let us collaborate with other students on the midterm and final (because of covid). The term project is kinda a pain but overall this class is an easy 80+. A grade booster for sure.
I love this class. This is the first year this seminar course was available at UoG and trust me its an easy A+. They have a lecture once a week that is very interesting along with a weekly reflection. His class was great and they are very considerate of mental health and well being. If I feel overwhelmed and want an extension they gave it to me.
Such a nice guy. Lectures were incredibly interesting and easy to follow, assignments were very straight forward and fun. Actually learned stuff in his class as he didn't just expect people to memorize things for tests and assignments. Midterm and exam were open book and collaborative. Stress-free and enjoyable
Best course I've ever taken and the greatest prof. Dr. Gregory's lectures were really well done and had lots of real world examples to apply the evolutionary concepts. Doesn't require that you simply memorize terms, but makes sure that you understand the concepts and apply them. Also blessed us with the exam, I highly recommend BIOL 2400 with him.
Getting a grade of 5 because he showed a Futurama clip during lectures and hes just a really funny guy.
Grade of 5 because he showed a Futurama clip in lecture.
Dr. Gregory is very philosophical and sees things from a deeper perspective, so he's quite inspiring. I like how he is able to apply examples from movies and TV shows to what we learn about. Evolution is a fascinating subject in general but even more fascinating with him.
he is a very nice and thoughtful teacher, he shows that he cares about his students well being. however, the course layout was very bad as all we had to do was read and there were no due dates for anything, we had to make it up ourselves.
this is easily the hardest class in all of my undergrad (and I've taken analytical one AND two). There are so many readings, most of which are very unclear and appear to be redundant in terms of the quizzes you have to complete. Both my friend and I are 80/90 students and we are both currently sitting at a 60 average (enough said!!)
This course actually hurts my soul. I'm usually a strong academic student but I ended up with a less than favorable mark. The case studies were on another level, it had me jumping for joy when I got above a 60. If you have a choice, don't take this course.
I first had Professor Gregory in my freshman year (2019-20) & he was unremarkable - nothing to write home about but not amazing either... but this year he's like another person entirely. Rude, prickly, difficult to deal with, the antithesis of what a good professor is supposed to be. I'd honestly avoid at all costs if I were you.
100% the worst course I took last year (& the worst prof for that matter). Avoid!!
Cranky and unclear - constantly gives extended analogies that you (& possibly him) get totally lost in. Had to study insanely hard to get a decent grade
Writing this on Christmas Eve and... yeah jus thinking about his class is enough to ruin my Christmas LOL
Mean & rude - don't take
Lectures are v. confusing and his monologues about very specific (and largely irrelevant) examples take up way too much time - sometimes more than half the lecture. Unsupportive and unclear when contacted with queries/questions. Would not take again.
My sister was also at Guelph and took Professor Gregory 3 years before me and my goodness did we have different experiences... she said he was good and a nice guy, but with me he was not a good teacher at all. He was angry and rude, sometimes straight-up lashing out at students just for asking him a question... I would honestly avoid at all costs!
Dr. Gregory is hands down the worst person who's taught me at college. Not only was he unhelpful to students who asked questions on the discussion board, he was insulting and sanctimonious for no reason - literally invoking things like his (very poor) view of the student's intelligence (!). I don't understand for the life of me why he's like this
Dr Gregory straight-up upset me this year. I took BIOL1070 previously and he was a good instructor, but this year it has been hellish. I don't know if something has happened, but when I took 1070 he one of the better lecturers, and now it's just the total opposite... I also have a friend who's taking 1070 this year and they said the same to me!
Hard to even explain but tldr I wouldn't take Dr Gregory again - he was pretty unclear during lectures & even more so when asked questions in writing. FWIW I'd hard avoid
Just really, really bad. Teaching was tough, didn't support us in any meaningful way and was unhelpful when approached
Had worse but stultifyingly boring and unhelpful in lectures
Dull & boring
Took 2 years in a row(for some reason that eludes me lol) and honestly, just don't. soo bad
After having taken Dr Gregory for 2 years, all I can say is he was (unfortunately professional) 'outlined' various studies whilst he was in position - I thought it unprofessional but there we are, pretty typical for such a range.
Honestly worst thing I ever took at uni, content v interesting but horrendously taught
Wish I could say good things about Dr Gregory given I've taken him for 2 years now, but both during lectures and answering student questions he is very irritated and most of the time not very helpful (or at least not as helpful as his own lecture slides). It's a shame bc his presentations are ok content-wise; just he's not good at all as a lecturer
Was not a good experience
Gregory was a great prof, a very funny and nice guy. To do well you need to understand and apply the concepts taught, not just brute memorization. The seminars were redundant and your grade was based on who ended up in your group.
Not a good instructor and seminars in particular were very poor. Woudl not take again
He was funny but not good a good lecturer at all. Complicated but I wouldn't take him again
No offense, but for such an easy topic you sure managed to find a way to make it difficult. 'Not memorizing' and 'thinking critically' means 'I'm going to make questions that have one word in them that makes them true/false or ''''the most correct'''''. SO much content for the case studies, I just ended up guessing and getting same marks.
I'm sorry but his case studies are about 4+ hours of assigned work/readings, 9/10 the quiz references none of it. It's great you don't realllly have to do the readings, but the quizzes are absolutely undecipherable. Hieroglyphics. I have never seen so many 'pick the MOST correct' style questions. also who writes a Wikipedia page about themselves!
Case studies relatively straight forward. Assignments pretty easy to do well in.
Dr.Gregory I hope you are reading this. You are one of the most unprofessional and unhelpful profs at Guelph. Instead of posting on twitter all day maybe reach out to your students and provide help on the case studies. The best thing a student can do is avoid this prof and course at all costs. If possible take it through another prof.
This prof is horrible, barely responds to emails.
this man is THE WORST PROF AT ANSWERING EMAILS/POSTS THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. wild. especially when our final project (25%) says we're "encouraged to consult with the TAs and instructors about your ideas"... laughable. i did prefer this DE course to in-person evolution though, but just wow. fine for me because i didnt ask for much help but beware...
The quizzes were all 'based on most correct' which can be difficult. Very much 'applied knowledge' over memorization. My main problem with Ryan is that hes egotistical - He wrote a wikipedia page about himself. But, the biggest is Twitter: I kid you not he tweeted 53 times in the last 14 hours - I counted. How can he care for students?
Rude to the point another student actually made a formal complaint. A really bad instructor, avoid at all costs.
If this dude spent half the time he spends on twitter actually ANSWERING HIS EMAILS he might've been okay. As it was he was a poor instructor who was difficult to get hold of to clarify his unclear teaching materials
Prefers Twitter to teaching.
