If you value objectivity, or anthropology at all, for that matter, don't enroll in this course. It's called "Africa", but I think that a more appropriate title would have been "Hate Whitey", or perhaps "Political Geography of Africa and Also Hate Whitey".
He is not an Anthropology PROF but rather a geography prof from Ethiopia. This man can't teach or chooses not to. He gives only vague instrusctions and finds his meterial on webpages designed for middle school. 90% of class is spent watching videos and the rest discussing nothing.Dont waste your $$$
This teacher was HORRIBLE. Such a ****, I wanted to drop his class this first week, and he told me NO. I had to break down crying in front of his office before the **** signed my form.
I got a 4.0 cause i looked at yahoo news for 5 minutes before class every day in the comp lab. All you have to do is show up, study an hour a week, and talk about current events, you will get an a.
Giday is wonderful. Granted, he is bad teacher but just befriend him and he becomes a saint. If you had a hard time in his class you should be working at McDonald's not going to college.
It's really difficult to get a grasp on that class unless you're one of those who already really cares about world issues. That, combined with his accent, make it difficult.

I think that he's a very good teacher. Some people don't do any of their assigments but expect a good grade. Doesn't make sence right? If you do all your stuff and turn it in on time, you'll get a good grade. Easy quizzes, fair grader and always helpful!
Took the video course. Instructor is very thorough. The material is INTERESTING! However, something to consider before taking this class: In addition to watching the videos, there is a ton of reading. More reading than I've done for any class that I've taken. The reading and the videos add up to make LONG daily study sessions.

Giday's 'urbanization in developing nations' class is great! He is a caring, dedicated instructor who focuses on relevant world topics. current events discussions can eat into lecture time & tangent conversations are frequent, but he manages to connect the dots for the tests, which are fair and not designed for anyone to fail.get out what u put in.
Does a great job with very relevant subject. Facilitates discussion of news & ensures we learn something every day. Lectures & films are dated, student initiative will be required to update them. Assigns a fair bit of research/typing work and expects a working knowledge of geography. Great life experience & sense of humor. One of the best @ SCCC.
Worse teacher I have ever had. Tons of grading errors only read of text book's power point. expected a ton of reading and test questions didnt even make sense and a lot of the time. For the final test, I studied 5 questions wrong because he had given me the wrong answer.
He thinks that his class is the most important class. He will make you cry. LOTS LOTS OF HOMEWORK, ESSAYS, BOOK REVIEW, + Different Excercises at home for Useless topic!! + Several in class tests and a Final Group Presentation!! WTF! If you're looking for an easy 4.0, don't take Giday (Destroy my day) => Take Mr. Faucette,
Wa~~~~~~~Never take his class..=.=" Giday will destroy your day if you take his class.Lots of homework+reading. The videos that he shows us are so sooooo boring and useless.
Giday is a great teacher! When I first realized he had an accent, I was like Sh*t. It didnt take long to get used to doesnt affect your learning process. As long as you hold your end of the bargain, come to clas and take notes, his stories are interesting, his tests are relatively easy, but can be a bit vague sometimes. Very funny and understanding
He is a rude and unjust teacher. He discriminates against disabled and other classes. He will defame your character any chance he gets. He is just mean and hateful. If you are disabled don't take this class, or just dan't take this class. Same for his Hum105.
By far one of the best teachers at Seattle Central. He speaks truth to power and engages all students to ensure every voice is heard regardless of whether he agrees with you or not. However he will respectfully let you know if he disagrees as is the responsibility of all activists. If you have a head on your shoulders you won't be disappointed.
He made me angry. One day, he yelled at me in his class. I was so embarrased. I couldn't understand his logics, and lectures. I don't like when says the word "world," and "interesting," that is all I've heard for the entire quarter. What a waste of time taking this class. I shouldn't fail this class but, he is difinitely insane ridiculous teacher.
why bother taking his class? fire him!!!!
Perhapsthe most unorganized, misleading course structure I have taken. His grading is contradictory, expectations misleading,I don't beleive he has actually reviewed his syllabus, course outline and materials leaving students feeling as if everythin is a catch 22. the course feels like a game of What would giddy think or want rather then the facts.
He is brilliant and respects all his students no matter how stupid or ignorant they are. He has his faults but the pay off is far greater. I highly recommend tapping into his wealth of knowledge a lot can be learned from him as well as his class.
His class was ridiculously easy all the way through the end. I had no problem getting a 4.0 even after skipping a week or two of his lectures. Just do the annoying journals and the book review. Skim the reading packet to get an idea of what it's talking about and infer from there. It's not that hard to assess and extract the information at hand.
For an online teacher, never online. Hard to reach.
I loved his class. Mr. Giday is filled with knowledge. It is hard go understand why people would be so unjust in their description of him. It is not impossible to get a 4. if you work hard and are serious about school. He is very clear in his lessons and always let's students chime in to keep the classes interesting. Mr. Giday is Wonderful.
Don't take his online class. He gives very lengthy reading assignments, about 100 pages per week. He is also unclear to what he is looking for in answers to the reading. It also takes him a few days to respond to any emails, so if you have an important question you just have to guess the answer. I am never taking his class again.
This is the worse class I have ever had. He did not teach anything. We watched videos everyday. He should look into another career.
all i can say is powerpoint presentations everyday. i ended up dropping the class.
Giday is awesome! People that dont like him on here are the slackers and bad students. His class is hard, but he is a great teacher. That's what education is supposed to be about.
I took many other classes from good and bad teachers one thing I can say is that he doesn't have interest to help students His lectures are very stagnant not so much inspiration or motivation If you are looking foward to really learn something don't waste your money on his class
Also had him for 100 the same quarter..Mr. Giday has a perspective that few here in America here can identify with, so it can be a valuable tool. Sometimes flustered, unprepared, and unorganized. He lost two of my test grades in both classes and other assignments as well so hold onto your work. A decent teacher nonetheless, you will learn something
His class is by no means easy but you get a lot out of it. His english/understanding is a little lacking so he sometimes lacks clarity on what he expects of you but if you work hard you can get a good grade.
This teacher is terrible at answering questions and has terrbile communication online. Do not sign up for his online class, he doesn't respond to emails. He also likes pages and pages of lengthy anwers.
He is actually a great teacher, and his lectures cover all the material that will be on the tests. He really got me interested in this subject.
Giday is a wonderful man and professor. He has a very diverse background from growing up in Ethiopia and shares a lot of knowledge about the developing world. He is very kind and knowledgeable. His accent is sometimes hard to understand but everything he says is worth the effort of listening. Pay attention to lectures and you'll do fine.
He's a knowledgeable prof with tons of vocab,as well as an awesome promotor of grapes and wine. Genuinely cute prof.
At least five major essays, reading homework, short essay assignments, and final presentation. Terrible communication and heavy accent.
I dont have words to say, how amazing this professor is. Hate to read about people commenting on his accent. I wish everyone could be expose to other cultures and enjoy his class. Well prepare and very smart professor. Best memories in his class and excellent friends i gained
Don't take his online class. He gives very lengthy reading assignments, about 100 pages every week, and unclear to what he is looking for in answers to the reading.
A lot of essay and reading assignemnts. hard to know what he is looking for in reading assignments.
If you really like Geography, please look for other teacher. His teaching method is not interesting. His assignment questions are not clear and he likes to deduct points as possible as he can.
I took his online class and his teaching method is not interesting. He assigns about 200 pages reading every week with questions to be submitted every week. Knowing what response he wants for the questions is really hard. In addition, he doesn’t replay emails fast.
Professor Giday is an experienced teacher and genuine person. He responds to engaged students and gives a variety of examples and small assignments to help students appraoch material. Light on the reading (100 pages assigned a week or less), with a stronger focus on discussion, interpretation, and connection to current events.
He seems like a really nice guy and he's not too harsh on grading, but the entire class was based on a boring video program - seriously, we watched a video EVERYDAY. He really didn't do a lot of teaching.
Horrible online class. Do not take him, don't waste your money and time. I did not like his attitude and it seems like he doesn't really care.. Lots of essays, midterm and a final.
An excellent teacher when given a chance. His accent is occasionally difficult but sit in the front row and it won't be a problem. He is very kind, extremely intelligent and very interesting. If you go to his office hours you will gain an important connection with him. ONLY weakness: slow response to email.
Great subject, terrible instructor. Unclear about expectations for assignments, will deduct points without explanation, impossible to please, doesn't reply to email, loses assignments. Awful experience. Killed all interest I had in the subject by the second week. Great readings presented badly. Skip him, anyone else would be better. Seriously.
Great teacher that is full of valuable knowledge. Anyone on here that says ride things about him obviously got a bad great or aren't serious students. It's not the easiest course, but if u do your work everything will be fine. Also, go to class everyday he takes that stuff seriously!
I'm sorry but I really can not understand his accent because I'm an international student, it is really hard for me,some students even drop his class because of this. He hardly updates the canvas, and also does not clears the assignments in classes.
At first it was hard to understand his accent but I got used to it after a while. He gives high marks for those who put in a lot of efforts in the assignments. He is helpful when you ask him for help but sometimes his lessons might be boring. Overall okay.
He barely gives lecture. All we do is watching videos of someone lecturing other people His worksheets are hard to fill and he made the video lecture as an exam! It's not that fun at class but it's kind of easy to do his homework because the library has the DVD of the lecture so you can always watch it after school.
He starts out really nice but he is strict and mean. He doesnt give clear assignments and he doesnt care about your concerns. Dont ever take this teacher you have meen warned!
Awesome teacher with an abundance of knowledge and very interesting stories about the world. If your looking to learn something AND get a good grade in the process then this is the class for you. Just show up to class, do your assignments, and participate and you will get an A! GREAT teacher!
just come to class (for attendance), be active (speak up), and do the hw (which he rarely assigns) and 3.5 is yours ! Never lecture, only watch videos. HW based on video which u can find in library
A GENUINELY LIKABLE PERSON
Marked down on EVERY assignment for not citing sources even though I explained various times that I only had the book or my own experience to draw upon. I am twice the age of the average student and I have traveled to most of the countries we studied, so I didn't need to look any of it up because I knew the material. You deserve better instruction
Worst class I've ever taken at Seattle Central. Teacher offers little assistance for those in need. I should have known something was up when he provided a syllabus with another teachers name on it. Horrible instruction. Horrible feedback. Doesn't read your assignments, just gives 8/10 for all work. Hard to tell what he's looking for.
He is an interesting guy, but to be honest I really cant understand what he talked. His pronouncement is so bad, especially for international students. You had better don't choose his class if you are international student. You must be confused. He gives low grade of each assignment. The most unbearable thing is we have to watch boring videos everyday!
Giday has a lot of enthusiasm for his subject, but didn't set clear enough expectations for projects.
I was rooting for him because he had interesting experiences to share at first, but then his lectures started to veer off onto completely irrelevant topics. We never got to hear instructions clearly for assignments because of it, and he would often forget to tell us about due dates. Also didn't know how to use Canvas. Grading was inconsistent.
This guy is completely useless. His grading makes zero sense and you lose multiple points on a 10 pt assignment because your format wasn't totally MLA for short answer/essay questions. The class in itself so beyond dry and nothing but terrible movies and textbook readings. Save yourself from this class or find another teacher if you can.
Plenty of major assignments are given that are not on the syllabus so pay attention! The syllabus was unusually tentative for my class and if you ever had a question he would refer you to the syllabus; a confusing cycle indeed. Gives a lot of onlineCanvas assignments in nononline courses, but still does not seem familiar with Canvas or technology.
unclear, unorganized, gives exams on weekends, and doesn't help when I ask for it.
Lovely and interesting person, probably should not be an instructor. Elementary material, less clarity than was imaginable to me, excruciating lectures directly from textbook's companion deck but peppered with inaccurate remarks. Attendance and participation graded. My worst ever class to date. Outrageous and my first B grade in college
He is a a very hard teacher but if you ask for help he is always ready to help. everything he expects is in the syllabus, and online since it was an online class. i had trouble getting a hang of the class but he helped me by giving feedback . is is not an easy class but if you do all your work. i struggled but ended up getting a 3.0
Vague is an understatement. Would never recommend.
Decent teacher in beginning and I got A's/B's through the class. When finals came, canvas kicked me out halfway through the test and I had to email him many times before he got back to me. He then expected it done next day by 11am but some of us work late and I missed it. He never responded to my emails and I wasn't able to retake, ended with a 1.5
Awful.
Awful. Strongly believe he might have discriminated when he first moved to U.S. Only talks about his country and teaches nothing. He should be kicked out from the school he does not deserve to be a instructor.
I agree with a poster below. Vague really is an understatement. Beware of online classes with this instructor. Email replies are usually prompt but the instructor does not seem to actually read your entire question and responses often show a lack of reading comprehension. Expect 2-3 emails to get a half-assed answer. Gave up on questions many times
I DEFINITELY WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS SO CALLED INTRO CLASS TO ANYONE. IT'S SUCH A BS CLASS BUT HE EXPECTS SO MUCH OUT OF IT. HE EXPECTS YOU TO FINISHED HIS ASSIGNMENTS 2 DAYS BEFORE THE DUE DATE. If you turn it in on the due date, he will deduct points & accepts no late work. And his instructions are terrible! WORSE PROF EVER.
2 weeks in and by far the absolute worst professor I have ever encountered. I've had to email him at least 5 times because none of the instructions make any sense. His responses are patronizing as if he thinks everyone should know what he wants in assignments. This professor is an absolute joke.
He's extremely unhelpful and his standards are very unclear. I get graded down on assignments for things that I was never told to do. He does not communicate his expectations at all. He also doesn't respond to emails. I can't believe people like this get teaching positions.
I am only a few weeks into my quarter with him and ALREADY I am out of my mind and frustrated. He has the HIGHEST expectations of a 100 level class I have seen. He does not make his standards clear and expects assignments turned in DAYS before the due date; he is also one of the MOST patronizing teachers I have ever had. 0/infinity do not reccomend
No word can explain how terrible I feel with him. I honestly don't know how he got his job, he's terrible. Probably the worst prof I've ever had. No clear instructions, no clear expectations, sucks at responding emails. What a waste of my time taking this class.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken, with the simplest material. The assignments are unnecessarily strenuous but more importantly very vague. Discussions have to be completed long before they're due or else you will receive a late penalty, and the lecture slides are useless. Taking this class is the biggest regret of my college career.
Taare is an absolute nightmare! Completely unclear and inconsistent with expectations and grading. Geography is such an interesting subject but he makes it so stressful and boring! His syllabus was incredibly confusing and made no sense. You basically have to guess when assignments are due because the syllabus won't help you. Avoid at all costs!!!
I read other profiles. Giday ain't that bad. He is a trip, though. I still liked his class. I learned in it. But I see what others, especially international students mean with their problems.
Professor Taare is unfairly underappreciated. Mr. Giday is an interesting person with a fascinating background. He can talk with passion about his experiences. This is valuable to the objectives of the class and considered as respectable life lessons. Professor Taare is a great professor and ready for a good discussion. His syllabus is accurate.
Professor Giday is an interesting person. He's just not a very interesting teacher. He is practically unclear about every assignment. His grading style is inconsistent. He threatens to take points off participation because students want to add on to the subject without raising their hands even though he emphasizes for everyone to speak their minds.
Very bad at communicating assignments which made it hard to pass the class. He also clearly didn't understand how to use canvas dispite it being part of the class, and instead of teaching we just watched video programs. Don't take this guys class if you can help it.
We spent most of the class watching videos that (at the time of taking the class) were already 9 years old and thus out of date. That is, when he could get the videos to work. He wouldn't allow any of us to meaningfully contribute to class discussions as he'd always interrupt and never allow us to respond to each other. what a waste of time.
I never write reviews on here, and I just recently graduated - I am here just to write a review about this professor. He should not be anywhere near a classroom. I went to UW (much harder than Central) and his GEO100 summer class was by far the most unnecessarily difficult class I've ever taken. It's clear he doesn't care about students' education
His course is needlessly difficult coupled with the 'lectures' being nothing more than a powerpoint of the pictures in the textbook and a few passages from the book he clearly doesn't know how to teach also no grading rubrics posted you get a general copy-paste for each assignment
never felt like i needed to write a review but this professor makes it to my top 5 worst teachers. An absolute nightmare. Bad with canvas, unclear expectations, unclear questions on homework, boring same structured hw every week with weird unrelated topics with no significance, and worst of all, unforgiving and petty attitude towards mistakes.
Giday is a nightmare. Get ready to spend hours upon hours doing assignments for him to spit in your face. The reason he doesn't have office hours is that there would be 100 people in line ready to beat his ass.
Be prepared to be mislead in every aspect of the class, from grading consistency, to what exactly is required for each assignment. He holds no office hours, so don't bother emailing him and if its an online course, well, good luck. He offers very vague to nonexistent feedback on graded work. I may as well ha lit my tuition on fire. 0/10. BEWARE.
No clear grading criteria. He isn't specific with what he wants on each assignment. Some of the assignments have nothing to do with what he is requiring us to read each week. Super hard grader, too. I would definitely suggest finding another professor for a geography class.
I took this online course & I shouldve listened to them. Although I passed the course its the only reason I dont have a 4.0 . I tried & did the extra credit but it he deducted points because even though I provided facts that supported my topics in my essays it wasnt the information he was looking for or what pleased him & no late work allowed.
He is the worst teacher I ever took. I already know about everything in Geo100 but I still have to take it for credit, the information in the textbook is worse than you searching on the internet. Really tough grader, just dont take his class if you want a maximum grade.
this has got to be one of the absolute worse classes that I have ever taken, this professor is an absolute nightmare to deal with. I would advise anyone who would listen to stay as far away from this guys classes as possible. he should not be teaching anyone let alone be a professor at a collage.
