He is a really good teacher. The class is very organized, so you know what to expect. It is an easy class, but he can be a hard grader on essays sometimes.
Thought this was going to be an easy A. 5 essays, with 2 rough drafts. 1st is graded by peers. 2nd Dr. Wakefield goes over and tells you what to fix. By the final draft there is no reason not to get a good grade. NOPE. He was never clear and the class average was never higher than a C. He loved to give F's. I dropped, not worth struggling for a C!
This guy was horrible! No one in my class got higher than a C on any of their essays! (Must have been in the same class as the guy below me.) "I don't know, ha" was a classic answer from him regarding pretty much everything. Goes off topic with his college stories, but critizies when students share stories that actually have significance. TRUST ME!
Group work and meet new people. Pretty simple class. Basic reading and writing.
I like the class because i knew what assigmens were coming way before they were due. Homework was easy but the paragraphs were hard. The writing center saved my grade for the most part, but i still learned a lot.
So first of all he was a **** I hated him a lot and did not like the class but I will have to admit that he seemed to get a lot better I guess I was just upset that ge graded hella hard but honestly it helped me in the long run and then I got up to a B-. I enjoyed the class a lot am takin him next semester engl 100
First of all when i first met him he seemed to be a real easy going teacher. I thought i was gona get an easy A but the class did get more difficult but not so difficult where i had to stay up all nite to get my work done. I would reccommend Dr. Wakefield to those who are placed in English 302.
For some students a little more clarity on instruction would be helpful.
this class helps the imrovement of college reading and skills. There is group work from time to time that are assigned or by choice. tyhe short stories that are read are not the best but not boring. help is there when needed
he is a good teacher and is very nice and always there to help you when u need him!
Dr. Wakfield is a very helpful proffesor. His willing to work with you in order to help your grade. He grades your paragraphs and essays by a rubric structure so you realy need to pay attention to your grammer and structure. If you can take care of that you should do fine in the class. I recomend this teacher.
Good clear understanding of what assignments are and when they are due. Assignments well explained well and always open to questions in class or in office hours.
This class is interesting and I have enjoyed taking it. Dr. Wakefield is helpful and open to questions.
good teacher, if your lucky you'll get one of his story during class.
Laid back, do your work, come to class, try to pay attention to the lame ass book get an A. Wakefield is awesome i suggest you choose him
Very good teacher. A lot of homework and essays but very clear on when they are due and what he wants. Most homework done on computer. Learned a lot
This class was alright. It wasn't hard and it wasn't easy. If you came to class and did the work you got the credit. We wrote 6 essays int eh semester (not hard) and overall it was what I expected. I got the grade I deserved and I'm signed up for his class next semester.
He was always on time. He changed the syllabus, but told us and gave an upgraded one. Most professors would just tell us but we probably for get. I liked him he had sense of humor.
Pretty laidback teacher. Grades hard on essays but in class work is easy and usually lets out early. overall chill if you just show up for class. I would say the only negative thing is that you have to show up for class. Light on homework.
Great teacher, makes it easy to learn and has fun with the class. Teaches what you need to know to become a better student.
Classworks and homeworks were doable. Always on time and easy to talk to regarding grades. The class in general was okay, not that easy and not that hard. Grades essays fairly. Pretty laid back.
Great teacher, and fun to be around. Made it fun to come to calss. I would recommend him to any student who wants to learn and have fun at the same time. Not a hard class but like 6 essays through out the semester and easy homework every week. I would have him as my teacher again.
I really like mr wakefield he was very understtanding. he gives you lots of time in class to do work and he gives a lot of extr credit at the end fo the year. i thought he taught very well to the class. He is however very strict in the fact that you have to write 6 essays and if you miss one then you cant make it up but he gives you at least a waee
Great on evalutions. Be ready to feel stupid, to feel smart again.
Dr. Wakefield is a very strict teacher. He would not accept late work. He wants his students to be on time, and if we are not on time he would marks us absent. He is a good teacher. I personally liked the way he thaught my class.
Dr. Wakefield is a nice teacher and very laidback type of a guy. Made class enjoyable, but always knew when to keep it serious.
I definately benifited from taking this class, yet it wasn't as challenging as I had hoped.
DR. WAKEFIELD IS A EASY GOING GUY. HE IS NOT STIFF OR ANYTHING, TELLS SOME STORIES, MAKES JOKES. HE HAS A FAIR GRADING POLICY, BUT EXPECTS A LOT OUT OF EACH STUDENT. ALWAYS ON TIME AND READY. HAS HIS EDGY DAYS, BUT SO DOES EVERY TEACHER. TEACHES A LOT.
Dr. Wakefield is an intense but outstanding teacher with a lot of great knowledge in which he is willing to share with his students. I learned a lot throughout his english course, with all the homework and test assigned, thus I am wlaking away with much knowledge.
I feel Dr. wakefield is a good teacher with great knowledge of english and has tought me how to greatly improve my writing. I feel he has some unusuall grading tactics when it comes to the homework assignments, sort of an all or nothing stiyle and I missed out on a lot of points from not turning in what i feel as minor part to some of the homework
Dr. Wakefield is a solid teacher. He is pretty funny. He has a laid back personality. He is always helpful. However, on things I did not understand, he gave confusing explanations.
It looks like Tad is a great teacher to anyone taking an Eglish class lower than 1A. The expectations placed on 1A students far exceed what is appropriate. Rarely anyone got higher than a C on the essays and he did not allow students to work outside his personal creative box. I would not take him for 1A but anything else sounds good!
Mr. Wakefield is an awesome teacher and I highly recommend him for anyone looking to be challenged and to improve his or her overall English writing. He relies heavily on his textbooks, attendance, and homework. But he does offer huge extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester. He is very dedicated to his student and is comical.
Easily the WORST professor I have had in 60+ units at SRJC. Highly inconsistent grading practices combined with a very dispassionate uncreative teaching style managed to kill all of the enthusiasm I had going into the class. Expect to be treated with disrespect and bored out of your mind. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I took English 1A with Wakefield, and let me tell you...he grades HARD! However, I disagree with the other 1A haters; Wakefield is well organized, our class discussions were off the hook, and he made himself available for help. My writing improved ALOT!! The bottom line is Wakefield makes you work! IF YOU JUST WANT AN EASY A DON'T TAKE WAKEFIELD!
I worked very hard in this class only to fail miserabley
Expect to work in this class! Not an easy A. Expect to read almost the entire textbook! Quizzez every week!18hours of lab! On-line journaling each week! Quizzes on novel chosen for that semester. 4 essays,mid-term and final. You'll learn how to write a paper and critically read a text. He is gracious with extra credit but massive amount of work!
he's not the greatest teacher. he doesn't give you usable feedback and is never clear on what he wants from your essays.
Dr. Wakefield is a very good instructor. When you do something wrong he will take his time to work with you and make sure you understand what you did wrong and he makes sure that you won't do that mistake again.
This class was very helpful and great to be in.
Inappropriate to ask hot or not. Loved the class was lots of fun and a great way to start the day. Thank you
Very good teacher. There are a lot work in this house, be ready for it.
My teacher helped out with the problems we had with our essays.
I think this teacher is pretty chill...He is a cool guy and i did learn from him...
he is a very good teacher and there is a lot of work that he has you do but it does help your writing improve.
Teacher made me laugh because sometimes he was unclear. It was entertaining.
is very understanding and h elpful.. will work with you to help you pass
very good english teacher!!!!!
good teacher. somewhat easy course. helped when needed.
Okay number of essays, easy to talk to. Important to attend class and complete essays for a good grade. really recommend for enlgish 100. Class was fun and ineresting even at 7:00 am. There is also opportunities for extra credit.
Mr Wakefield is a great teacher and a great person outside of the classroom. would most defenetly take a nother class with this teacher.
Dr Wakefield helped me tremendously with essay skills and grammer. Ihope to have an English teacher as helpful as him in my next English class, so I will fully understand the English language.
I would take this class with DR.Wakefeild again. I had class with him on T,Thur at 7:ooam and he was alot of fun. He woke the class up with his funny jokes and comments. This class was so much fun. We did have to write six essays of 750-1000 words. They were not very difficult.
Dr. Wakefield has been a GREAT teacher. He helps student get ahead, and his teaching ways are easy to understand. I enjoyed his class, he is a good ENG 100 teacher.
Mr. Wakefield was a pretty laid back teacher. His homework assignments were managable. And as long as you turn in your homework and essays on time, then you should do well in his class.
If you want to pass english take tad. The greatest english teacher ever. bay area sports fan just take it. trust me.
need an A??? take this class, its easier than you think. great teacher who taught the main ideas
He is a great teacher and very reasonable. Highly recomended! Do online assignments, worth A LOT!
cool teacher. love the extra credit saved my life!
this teacher has a great personality
Dr. Wakefield is a very cool guy. His class has a good invironment and he has a laid back personality. You still need to do work to pass though...so dont get any ideas. Not too hard though.
this teacher is quite entertaining- he's fun and basic. gives plenty...plenty of opportunities to get a good grade.
I liked having Dr. Wakefield as an instructor. His sense of humor made the class light and fun. I am too old to rate his appearance as hot or not:-)
The class was challenging and at a college level. The teacher was clear in his instructions, and organized. Has a good sense of humor. -E.L.
The class was great, Dr. Wakefield is mellow and will listen to you. Maximim 6 essays, which he has you do rough drafts due a week brfore the Final draft which was great. Scores a little high on reading quizes and weekly journals, so jsut read and you'll do good.
I found this class to be very helpful and rewarding. Dr. Wakefield is easy to talk to and approachable. I took this class before with a different instructor and I didn't learn nearly as much as I did this time. I would recommend taking a class with Dr. Wakefield.
I have learned a lot in his class. You can ask him questions and he will help you on work. You have 6 essays to do for the whole semester. His work is fairly easy, but time consuming. The homework you get is out of the textbook and writing on and off line. All you have to do to pass is do your work and show up to class.
A great teacher with a laid back style, very knowledgeable, good sense of humor, and willing to bend over backwards to help you. What can I say; I loved this class! And all you really need to do is show up on time, be prepared, participate actively in class, and do your best work! Now if I can get an A+ in this class, anyone can get one!
Liked writing the papers and the quizzes were good, didn't like the cursed e-journal weight though, way too many points =P
Good class, if you pay attention, and do your work you'll get an A, and even if you fall behind there are many extra credit assignments that can help you out.
Taught me how to read critically, and write well
Be prepared to work in this class! If you get an A, you'll have earned it but he does offer lots of opportunities for extra credit. He assigns MANY writing assignments. He's not always clear about what exactly he wants but go to his office hours and he'll explain.
Even though there is a lot of work, it isn't difficult work. There are several essays, numerous quizes, homework assignment, etc. Dr. Wakefield is extremely pleasant and genuinely cares about his students and their well being. He gives numerous extra credit assignments and gives several updates on grades through the semister to keep you up-to-date
Very enjoyable class. I really enjoyed all of the requied readings and all of the debates and discussions held in class.
The professor is extremely fair and equitable as he gives numerous opportunities to improve one's grade with lots of extra credit. However, the required work and reading is great and one should be prepared to take weekly quizzes, reading the majority of the text and writing 4 essays. Teacher makes every effort to help students succeed.
Tad is a wonderful teacher. He clearly wants nothing more than to see his students to succeed. His required assignments are not demanding and can be subject to flexibility. He makes himself easily avalible to his students via e-mail, his office and telephone; all which are avalible on his course website. Overall, I did enjoy his class.
If you are looking for an easy, fairly light English class to fulfill your general ed requirements, this is the class for you. I hate English, but there was nothing particularly offensive about this class's workload, which was mostly just writing essays every few weeks. One bonus: Dr. Wakefield offers plenty of extra credit options! An A is cake.
Overall he's a pretty good teacher. You have to work hard though. He gives a lot of pop quizzes, so you need to do the reading. But he also gives quite a few extra credit opportunities.
This is a enjoyable class that helps you understand english. The reading was helpful because of the requirements. Great teacher makes the class enjoyable.
He was very helpful with any questions or concerns you had. He was always available through email. He grades fairly.
I very much enjoyed my second semester with T. Wakefield. The spring 07' events for Leslie Silko were great, along with the in class discussions about chapters in Rereading America. I was a bit bored when we used the same poems from last semester-but for those who didnt have Wakefield last semester-it must have been a very enriching experience.
He's a down to earth, Always happy dude. If you do all your work the class is easy to pass. My grade was my choice. Had I done the work I would have done much better. He has a lot of oportunity for extra credit.
Tons of Extra Credit
Would you like to learn how to write an argumentative essay, a research paper, a reflective essay and a position paper and know how to write a thesis with supporting evidence in the body? This is the class! You will learn how to critically read by annotating, summarizing and using other techniques? Dr. Wakefield will prepare you for college writing!*
Never had i thought that i was good at writing essays till i took this class. Dr. Wakefield threw out the groundwork for writing and i was able to complete each essay very well
He was great. A funny, excellent professor. I want to go have a beer with him somtime.
This class was fairly easy as long as you stay on task. There is an essay due once a week but they only hve to be 750-100 words. He is funny and the classes go by quickly. There is nothing hard about this class as long as you do the work.
Clear and makes it seem very easy.
excellent teacher. I would recommend for anyone taking English 100
I enjoyed this class very much. It was a little difficult at first with the reading of ceremony that book was not interesting to me at all. But Dr. Wakefield was very helpful if you seeked his advice. I didnt do well in both my other english classes I took. Dr. Kort and Jennifer Royal were two of my least favorite teachers at this school
Dr.Wakefield was a very good instructor. There is a lot of writing,so it will test you if you don't like write. He expects the best from his students so don't think you will coast through this class. This guy rocks!Very laid back, I would like to have a pint with him and pick his brain for a while.
Don't listen to other people, DR. WAKEFIELD'S CLASS IS SO EASY! He is probably the most mellow person you'll ever meet. He is really helpful and, unlike other English teachers who seem to be teaching just because they know how to write an essay, Wakefield actually knows how to help you write an awesome essay. Helpful and educated. Take this class.
Worthless, absolutely horrible teacher. He expects way too much outside time for his class, especially for incoming freshman. He is a pompous yet ineffective speaker; he's always talking at you, not to you. I'd rather take a W (and I did) than deal with his idiocy. Just because you have a PhD doesn't make you a Doctor, you bombastic buffoon!
Truly a sweetheart. I really enjoyed his class. Often let out early which was nice. Clear assignments, not a heavy work load. He was very fair and gave us a lot of opportunity to fix our grades including correcting and resubmitting papers. A great class, will probably take another class with him in the future.
Really good teacher! He doesn't give a lot of work and it's clear about the assignments,he is very helpful and always tried to give you an opportunity to better your grade. I really recommend to take his class!
Although Tad is a nice guy to chat with, his teaching style is very bland and generic--I learned more about critical thinking and writing in my English 1A class than I did in his class. The books were interesting but the level of discourse in the class was lower than a high school english class because he couldn't keep the discussion focused.
bad not any help
Tad is not helpful, a termendous amount of homework. He nick picks your papers apart and scratches words out and puts words in that he likes rather your paper made perfect sence. WOULD NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
i think tad is a great guy but it is very true what everyone is saying. he goes through all youre writing and picks random stuff to comment on. you could write a great essay and get a 65 or write a decent essay and get like an 85. i dont like his teaching style but i really like him as a person. DO YOUR E-JOURNALS!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES HE IS THE WORST HE GIVES YOU NO HELP WHAT SO EVER,HE ISNT EVEN SURE HE KNOWS WHAT HE WANTS YOU TO WRITE.YOU CAN ASK A QUESTION AND NEVER GET A STRIGHT ANSWERYOU CAN WORK HARD ON A ESSAY TURN IT IN A HE GIVES YOU A ZERO LIKE YOU NEVER DID IT,YOU CANNOT GET A GOOD GRADE IN HIS CLASS,MOST STUDENTS DROP
This is a very consistent teacher. Structured. Here's the key to this class, do ALL the assignments, turn them in on time, he provides plenty of extra credit, and for the essays, see him once or twice about what he's looking for in the essay, then you'll get an A or a B on the essay. Helpful. Just not the most exciting or engaging.
I really liked having Tad as a teacher. As long as you can get used to his dry sense of humor he is great. I thought he was very funny and as long as you asked for help he was willing to give it to you. Great guy and great teacher!! Take him if you can
Really good teacher. Until this class I had never earned an A in English. I was always a B/B+ type student in English courses. He helped push me over the edge with interesting and helpful exercises
Good teacher, not great. He cancelled too many classes, which bunched up a lot of work at the end of the semester. But, overall, a very enjoyable class and learning experience.
I did not enjoy this class. It is extremely heavy on busy work and there is an essay due almost every week. There is no allotted amount of classes you are allowed to miss and there are quizzes nearly every class. This class felt a lot like a junior high school class and I did not feel like I was being treated like an adult. Wakefield is a nice guy
If English is your thing, then this is the teacher for you. He is hard. There is a lot of reading for the first half of the semester. A lot! Homework is due each week twice a week on each reading and pop quizzes are to be expected. Three essays and a research paper are mixed in there also. For those who do not like English not recommended.
Wakefield is a cool guy, be is very nice and seems down to earth. He has nice class discussions. He seemed to kind of get sloppy at the end of the year, not returning papers or returning e-mail, etc. Also got the feeling sometimes that he wasn't really reading the papers but just grading them.
He is interesting. Alot of homework and sometimes it seems like he doesn't read it, he gives alot of quizes on the reading. We had to read the english book and A world of Ideas. He got sick towards the end of the semester and did not seems to be organized. He is not bad and he did help me understand English and write better.
Class has a heavy workload:Weekly reading assignments with written responses (keep on top of them!),4 essays,a novel with a research paper as the final.Regular in-class discussions and pop reading quizzes are to be expected. Visit Wakefield during office hours and he is very helpful. He is a really nice and understanding guy! I recommmend him!
i thought this class was a waste of my time and money. i am disappointed with the fact that i didn't learn a single thing to better my writing skills. i felt like i paid to torture myself for a semester with arduous busy work.
Wakefield is a wonderful instructor and is very caring - if you care! If you put an obvious amount of effort into your papers and homework then you will get a good grade, most likely. He seems laid back which makes the class more enjoyable. I would recommend strongly to take this professor!
The course itself was work heavy with lots of reading, writing, and the like. Wakefield himself appreciates the effort you put in and is an interesting and nice guy. I would, and have, recommended him. Again, put in the time and it shows in your final grade.
This class starts out very challenging and becomes considerably more easy. Wakefield wants you to do things his way, even if its not what you think best. Check your essays by him, and make suggested changes. Him seeing you trying is extremely important. I didn't love this class but it wasn't too painful. Take him for a three hour block if you can.
Nice guy-not a great teacher. If you can already write a good essay, class is a breeze. If you?re actually in school to learn, skip him, no instruction whatsoever & little/no critical feedback. Lots of reading & written assignments. Uses TurnItIn.com so verbose essays w/ correct word count mandatory. I would say this class was more akin to a critic
I had to drop but my reason had nothing to do with the way this professor teaches. I've seen complaints of him in other reviews that suggest that he is not clear in his assignments; unless you want to be spoon-fed, a professor could not be any clearer! Highly recommended!
If you take a class with Tad Wakefield, suck up to him. My final paper had loads of mistakes and I got an A because I went to his office hours and did whatever he had told me to do. I don't even think he read it, honestly. If you really want to learn and discuss this subject in a helpful engaging manner, take this class with someone else.
There is homework due every class with a lot of writing using the text book. We did not use the other books very much however. He is not very clear on his assignments, leaving a lot of room for self discretion. He also offers lots of extra credit. Just make sure you show up, participate and turn in all of your homework and you will do fine.
Wakefield, in my opinion, is a stickler for quantity instead of quality. Whatever you do... Avoid missing class at all costs! If in fact you do miss a class, get the notes/assignments that you will need for the next class meeting. HE DOES NOT ACCEPT LATE ASSIGNMENTS! (or hand written homework/essays/etc.)
There's homework due every class and it's mostly reviewing essays from the text book. I learned nothing from them, but he had us do a ton. He'll cut you slack if you're falling behind. He's a pretty laid back guy and in class we mostly just reviewed things I learned in middle school. I'm not sure if I actually learned anything. At all. Whatsoever.
I recommend my friends to take Mr. Wakefield's class because I improved my writing and reading skills a lot just by following his instruction. I like his assignments because they forced me to read critically and write a lot, which is the key to improve language skill. He also offer extra credit, so you can make up some gap if you want a good grade.
Tad seems like a cool guy, but I would not take him again if i had the chance. Assigns hw every class and multiple essays at once. A lot of awkward group work too.
I learned nothing and didnt know why i came to class sometimes
While he did not show much help to those that did not want any, he would help those that actually were interested in the class. Lots of extra credit given. If you followed directions and did the work, you can get an A no problem.
I liked Mr. Wakefield's 302 class. I learned a lot of necessary skill to be successful in 100. Attendance is key and you have to be a very independent thinker. He goes through a syllabus at the beginning just like every class and he's doesn't repeat himself often. Make sure to communicate promptly and he'll be flexible.
Would not recommend him. He misses a lot of class, he doesn't explain the material very well. He is very hands off, he just hands us stuff and assigns stuff and he expects us to know it all. He is a hard grader too.
You will buy very pricey books and will hardly use them in class.
This class is so easy just have to do assigments plus he doesn't really read anything you turn in. I got a 106.3% if your a slacker this is the class for you! You don't really need to buy the books I just spark note before quiz. The quizs are easily found online as well.
His class is easy he is not the best teacher. He grades through turnitin by checking boxes and he gives minimal to no feedback. Essays in the class are about conspiracies and class discussions revolve around how doomed America is. He has you read a lot but doesn't discuss the books much, and if so its about how America's failing is like the books.
Made me miss my high school English teachers. Not clear about assignments. Overall this class was like a bad high school sophomore English class. Made you buy/rent books that were used ONCE. Thank God we read books that were at least somewhat interesting (Gatsby/Sun Also Rises). DO NOT TAKE unless you have no other option
Good teacher, will work with you if you're willing to put in your effort.
great teacher, very knowlegdable in the subject, extremely helpful and the only reason i am continuing in college level english thanks a lot extremely recommend anything he teaches!
Very helpful and easy to talk to. Definitely had patience with me and other students. I didn't feel rushed so learning wasn't a problem. A feeling that I was never wrong was how English class should be. Way better then high school English teachers, by far.
Easy class as long as you show up since you don't really do much during class. doesn't use the textbook much if at all. He puts you in pretty awkward groups often.
Mr. Wakefield is a very good teacher. Itys an easy class, if you attend the class, bring workbooks to every class, always be prepared, never be late, pay attention, and you wont fail the class. If you dont understand something just ask him and he can help you. really easy class, if you show up and participate you wont fail.
Wakefield is one of the most outstanding committed teachers i have ever had. He is truly passionate on what he teaches and wants students to succeed in class and life. Best teacher ever!!!!!! I do suggest to get his classes.
pretty basic english class the instructor was very helpful
I loved this class.
He is a great teacher.
he needs to explain more the assignments because sometimes he confused us. he has to make us used textbook more because it was a little expensive. he is a really nice teacher
Mr. Wakefield is awesome teacher English teacher he make class interesting and fun. We don't do boring book work in class much we have lots of class discussions that are fun on the books we read.
First of all this class was helpful for me a lot, because I remember how to write an essay for when ever I would need it in the future. I did not like any of the books that we read in this class, I thought they were boring and none of what I would read would get stuck in my mind. I will miss this class.
a really good teacher
While he might be a good teacher for most classes he is truly dreadful for friday classes. He doesnt plan them, throws on a movie or puts us into groups, leaves early, or even doesnt show up! Don't take a friday class with him!
He's the worst teacher... I'm not saying he's a bad guy, but he grades SUPER HARD. If your not good at writing essays then I would take someone else... Also his class felt like it would never end.
Easy Class
lame. lack luster teaching style.
Mr. Wakefield is not a very clear English teacher. He is never clear on what he wants you to write your essay on. Sometimes is class I fell like I am in history class instead of English. When he grades your essay he doesn't give good fed back. If your a student who likes to learn I would suggest that u do not take his class you wont learn anything.
He seems like a cool teacher but he is just not that clear with what he wants on essays. Sometimes his lectures are more like a history class than an English class.
Very confusing and hard.
He isn't clear with what he wants and he just doesn't help at all. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone unless they like boring teachers. At the end of semester there was about 12 students out of 35. I should have dropped the class when I had the chance. My advice for anyone who is planing to take his class is to start reading or drop the his class.
We only used 2 of the 6 books we had to get. Don't waste your time and money on this class.
Good teacher in the sense that his course taught me to work harder. Not a course for the faint of heart. If your ready to read and discuss and actually do the work (as many don't), although it may be a lot in a short period, you will survive. Be prepared to spend mandatory time in the writing center, if you have time outside of class or not.
Took his class in Summer and it was a breeze. Take his class! Of course there was a lot of reading and writing, but Dr. Wakefield made the time go by quick with his funny personality. I learned a lot in his class. He grades fairly and gives extra credit.
He never tells us enough information about essays, tests, research papers, etc... He talks the whole class and gets way off topic. Not a great teacher to take if your looking for a good learning experience.
Prof. Wakefield is candid and has a laid back persona about him. Interesting in class and good with class discussions. He's a tough grader but at least he gives clear instructions on what he wants out of the assignments. Extra Credit available. Do not miss class and assignments - it will pull your grade down tremendously. Prepare to work for your A
The dude is kind of a joke professor. Easy with grades and open to talk to about changing it. I had a D in the middle of the class, and got an A by the end. Take it, you'll pass.
He's great! Easy class that i recommend to everyone!
He has an interesting choice of books to read and make you develop critical thinking. You will definitely learn through numerous attempts how to write in MLA format correctly in this class. He is always there to answer your questions and to help you to create perfect essay, works cited, structuring your ideas and style of writing.
One of the worst English Classes I've ever been in. It's his way or the highway and your opinion doesn't matter. He doesn't teach anything, then loads on the homework. He will cancel class often and won't say anything about it. He isn't clear on anything and won't do anything to help you when you need it. Do yourself a favor and pick someone else.
I took English 1A over the summer and it was a lot of reading and writing. He tell you what he expects of you and I noticed a lot of people getting bad grades, but those people never asked for help. 2 essays and a research paper. A lot of in class writing assignments. He's very chill.
this class is a joke he is by far one of the most unorganized teachers I have ever dealt with. He makes you write about irrelevant topics and assigns major projects to be due on the same day(example: year long research paper and a major essay both due at the same time). He hasn't replied to any of my emails and the only book we use wasn't required
Easy class for students who do their work. Dr. Wakefield is clear, helpful and actually pretty funny (he has a dry sense of humor). But for students who don't do their work his class was impossible to pass. If you want to learn, take Wakefield. But if you expect to get an 'A' for just showing up, don't take him!
As a student with a disability, Wakefield was there for me! Easy to approach and very helpful.
Overall, the class was super easy. His grading system can be confusing at first, but it becomes obvious what his marks mean. There are 3 essays throughout that are equivalent to the big research paper due towards the end of the semester; the rest of the assignments are short responses to things we read/watch in class. He also gives out extra credit
Best teacher I have ever had. The work isn't to hard which allows you to actually learn rather than try and keep up. If you do all of the work, you get a good grade. One of the few teachers at junior colleges that aren't nuts. Only bad thing is the 'writing center' requirment. I got a 'B' because I didn't go for tutoring when I had an 'A' anyway.
He's an amazing teacher, very helpful. You must be in class, one day out could throw off your grade. He does a lot of in class papers due the same day, but easy. At one point we were doing 3 outside papers at once but it was manageable if you were dedicated. I took him twice. Got B's because I missed a few.
by far one of the most difficult teachers. he makes you buy books you never use. gives you irrelevant topics to write about. doesn't answers emails. i was failing his class and spent hours in the writing center and took my topic to him and he didn't like it and i failed the outline.
Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He does not make sense what so ever. He is all over the place, I really believe he doesn't understand what he is instructing half the time.
He is very lazy. He changed all of the books the first day of class. He doesn't explain himself on assignments which makes everyone always confused. There isn't any tests or quizzes and if there is he doesn't say anything until one class prior the test.
He's an amazing professor if you want to learn at a moderately relaxed pace he's your man. He loves discussing the reading material and really makes you look at things from different perspectives. Sure he might not be the most organized but that's what makes his class more laid back. Forgot to tune in that essay on time? His response "Don't worry."
He is very confusing on grading, when you ask him to clarify, he doesn't explain what needs to be fixed. We never actually use our books. He spends all day going over one handout. Classes are pretty pointless but you have to go or he'll lower your grade. Definitely grades on whether he likes you or not.
Im not one to blame a teacher for getting a bad grade except for when it comes to him. Normally anyone would love a laid back teacher, but not when hes also very hard on grading. Good luck with getting any answers to any of your questions. Not to mention one of the first essays youll write is about how bad our generation is.
Dr. Wakefield certainly is not for everyone. For starters, he expects students to read, write and THINK. This can annoy students who want to skate by but still get an 'A'. Ignore the haters. Wakefield really is patient and thoughtful. He gets students to think about the world around them. I still think about the books we read in his class!
Professor Wakefield is a very kind person. Other students struggled however because they didnt seek outside help from the writing center, and then were frustrated with their grades. Just show up, participate, and work hard on your essays and its a super easy A.
At first I thought Dr. Wakefield was impossible to please with essays and in-class writing assignments. But once you figure him out, it gets easier. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. If he asks for 2 pages of notes, write 3. For essay outlines, same thing: go the extra mile. His essay topics are interesting and thought provoking.
Overall decent experience, we read a lot of really interesting material. I wish he was a bit more specific on how he graded though (for example, why exactly he took off points on essay grades, more specific feedback would be nice). We missed a lot of classes this semester so probably not the complete Tad experience.
I learned a lot in Dr. Wakefield's class. He's a great professor! The negative ratings of Dr. Wakefield just prove to me how some people these days can complain about anything. Dr. Wakefield was one of the best English teachers I have ever had. Period. Do yourself a favor and take him.
Professor Wakefield is probably one of the best English professors at SRJC. He makes sure everyone understands whats going on. He adds a little bit of calm humor to discussions. Nothing you say in class discussions could ever be wrong and he takes everyones point of view seriously. 10/10 would take again.
Best English teacher! I wish I had take him for English 1A. He is super understanding and make the class fun! There is a lot of reading and you do have an assignment to do on the reading but nothing that can't be done! A lot of the work is done in class other than working on essays outside of class. Highly recommend Tad!
Awful professor if you want to improve your writing or learn anything. He is far too concerned with hand holding lazy students and is not transparent with his students. He caters to the unmotivated and his unrefined grading methods dont reward those that do not try. If you want to learn something while at class, avoid him.
I got an A but never received any meaningful feedback. He seemed annoyed during office hrs. Hes was usually eating his lunch and would crack the door slightly, or stand in the doorway. He referred me to the writing lab while in his office seeking feedback on my assignment. He said youre getting an A so dont worry about it. Very disappointing.
This spring 20 semester was wacky since we were forced to switch to Canvas mid-semester because of COVID-19. Class was going great for me, before Canvas. Then it got really tough! All of us (including me) were counting on getting a "pass" this semester. We didn't get it. Wakefield is tough, what else can I say? I did learn a lot, though.
Professor Tad is a good teacher. We talk about readings in class and they are all very interesting. There were a lot of papers in his class and he graded them generously. I frequently went to his office hours to get help on my papers.
Mr. Wakefield was a good English teacher. I learned quite a bit about different writing styles in his class and there were interesting books in his class. There were so many essays in Wakefields class. I barely had time to write them. He was very nice about going over my essays with me and making sure I was doing well in and out of class.
Wakefield was a great professor. He had clear expectations for us and himself. The class was not difficult outside of the frequent essays. Take this class!!!
Wakefield was a great prof and class was always a joy to go to. His lectures were funny and interesting. The readings were also not bad. My only issue with him was that he did not make the class any easier when Wuhan COVID-19 happened. The class became a little more difficult since we transitioned to an online classroom learning environment.
I took this class with Mr. Wakefield and i thought it was pretty cool. The books we read were cool and the essays we wrote were all based on them. He is also a lenient grader and I always went to his office hours for extra help regarding my essays. His tests were infrequent, but they were pretty easy as well.
Tad was a good professor. This was my first English class that I took in college and it was better than my English classes in the past. Both Tad and the other students in class just seemed more mature and laid back than in high school. I always talked to him when I needed help with an essay. He gave great tips and I got good grades as a result.
Loved Tads class. It was an easy course and we read a lot of interesting texts. My writing definitely improved after taking English 1A with him. Hopefully we cross paths again
He doesn't understand how hard it is to learn from online classes. Expects all to immediately receive and process his comments and redos. Canvas is also confusing and doesn't give clear notifications when something is due or when they comment.
Dr. Wakefield fails to understand the amount of work he is giving out. I have taken an English 1A class before and it was nowhere near the difficulty of this class. He has no sense of compassion and is very strict. I would not recommend this class to anyone unless you enjoy stress, anxiety, and mounds of endless work. DO NOT TAKE CLASS!
Incredibly rude professor. I don't know why but he doesn't censor or filter himself around students. Laughed at me, rolled his eyes, got frustrated and angry really fast if I didn't understand a concept or idea right away. No room for error from him, and on top of that he isn't clear about what he wants. Made me feel bad about myself and my work.
He makes his class way harder then it needs to be, and expects you to take his comments immediately and fix them when they are unclear. Also, only gives terrible feedback and doesnt actually tell you how and what to fix. The grade zero is his favorite to use and say on every assignment comment. Ive been in english1a and this is the worst yet.
Dr. Wakefield is a good teacher. I definitely got a lot out of his class. The problem I had was the amount of work he assigned. It was insane! There werent any breaks all semester and the stress it caused trying to keep up was rough. I wouldnt take him again only for that reason.
Well I'm not the best writer but Dr. Wakefield's insistence on correct MLA format helped me overcome my long-term bad writing habits. Fact is, I can be pretty lazy. I improved as a writer this semester, but I had to work for it--no gimmies here! The African-American literature we read was FANTASTIC! I loved it, & wish the course went on longer!
Wakefields English class was pretty easy. Just follow the instructions for his essays and meet the page count. I always asked him to take a look at my essays before turning them in. He always gave me good feedback and never had a problem with him.
Dr. Wakefield is a skilled teacher of effective writing. You must be focused and work to earn a good grade. My only qualm is that his reading material is outdated. Its the same white dudes talking about racism, etc...I could hardly take it, y'all. My fellow melanated siblings: look for a professor that assigns material relevant to the 21st century.
I took Wakefield during the summer after taking him during the semester. I had to drop his semester class because I was working way too many hours and the workload got out of hand. Wakefield was WAY MORE CHILL IN THE SUMMER! I got an easy 'A'!!! Here's my advice: take Wakefield during the summer, not the regular semester.
Too many papers. This is an entry level English class. Most of all he treats it like a history class; all the material is seriously out dated and most of it doesn't pertain to this generation or century. Heavy focus on racism, which is ok, but its preaching to the choir to me at this point. Much of the material is very, very dark.
A teacher who can't handle being wrong and brings down students by telling them that they have an "immature mindset". He relies on students to grade the rough draft while he depends on the writing center to grade our final drafts. His feedback is unhelpful and minimal. Will give you a low grade with no explanation why or what to improve on.(Online)
Overall, I really liked his course and definitely recommend him as a professor. His grading criteria is clear, and it is easy enough to achieve a good grade.
He's definitely the professor to sign up for if you really care about improving your writing. If you're just taking this class because its required, take a different professor. He marks down heavy for minor MLA format mistakes, often gives vague or even nonexistent feedback, and is sometimes condescending and rude when he does give feedback.
Mr. Wakefield is kind of a tough grader, but he truly wants his students to succeed. If you visit him during his office hours, he genuinely gives good feedback about what he expects. I improved as a writer because of him.
Dr. Wakefield is an excellent instructor! Not limited to just reading and writing assignments; MLA, annotating, transition phrases, etc. He does require you review your papers in the writing lab (and keep a log of it). He offers excellent feedback. But be warned you will have heavy word count papers right from the start. Would definitely take again
Incredibly rude professor who drops points for minor issues. Feedback is unclear as to what he wants and seems as though he likes to see students fail. Take this professors class only if you have no other option.
He is a very awful teacher in my opinion. He marks down grades heavily for minor errors and he can't be wrong, he always has to be rate no matter what
A teacher who can't handle being wrong brings down students by telling them that they have an "immature mindset". His feedback is unhelpful and minimal. Will give you a low grade with no explanation of why or what to improve on. (Online) he calls us stuff like we're going to fail in life.
I took the class over the summer so it was a lot of work crunched into a few weeks. Overall, I loved the class and ended up with a good grade. He doesn't grade hard so I feel like If you have to motivation, getting an A in the class would not be hard. We read Animal Farm and the Tortilla Curtain which are very easy reads about interesting topics.
When Tad grades he takes a lot of points off for things other professors would not mark you down for. When he grades and gives you a low score he does not give any positive feedback or suggestions to improve your work he just mentions every single little thing we do and makes you feel dumb he wants everything to his perfection. DO NOT RECCOMEND
Unclear and unhelpful homework assignments that would take hours to do. This class caused my grades to drop in my other classes because of the large amount of work.
When I read the reviews before taking the class i was worried that he would be bad but he wasnt he gives a ton of really easy extra credit and his grading mostly depends on reading 2 small books a good professor and offers 3 mulligans to redo assignments
Assigns so much homework to the point class feels like labor instead of a learning experience. I would 100% not recommend this teacher. This should be an advanced English class.
Got into the class thinking it'd be a basic English class for credit but I'd describe it more like a class you take to become a typist or writer. Otherwise, gives out mulligans for the massive work load he plops on your plate. Take this to challenge your nervous system, not to learn English.
I didnt have the worst experience and this class was not that hard but it wasnt fun or inspirational at all. Decent extra credit opportunities and not too much work, but grading criteria is vague, got a lot of B's with no helpful advice. Basically all feedback comes from writing center so not a lot of good 1 on 1 instruction. Not bad, wouldn't rec
I took this course my senior year of highschool and was able to pass with an A+ with honors and ap courses.Tad's a cool guy and is really down to earth, if you have a problem he's there to help you through it and work with you to help you succeed. There was a fair number of essays but to be expected from a college level english course. Does talk slo
Very slow with lectures and homework instructions
Professor Wakefield is by far the best English instructor I've had at JC. I took his class as a high school dual enrollment student. He assigns quite a few of assignments each week but it is definitely manageable if you don't procrastinate. He is very clear with his instructions and gives great feedback.
Professor Wakefield was pretty straightforward with his expectations out of the gate however I found his Canvas page to be a bit too disorganized. The workload was heavy and this class definitely required my attention. The feedback that was given was vague. Even as someone who did well in the class I felt so burned out by the end.
You have to dig ridiculously deep for any helpful feedback and the Canvas/Turnitin situation is painfully disorganized. I love English and I hated this class. It's not the hardest but I learned nothing from it. I got credit and high blood pressure probably. Very little else. Can't recommend but you'll survive. Oh well.
Fortunately all the books we read were about middle school level. If you were a reader as a kid you probably read that sort of stuff at 8 idk. It's incredible how stressful a class can be without being difficult or engaging at all!!
Professor Wakefield was a good professor. I took him as a dual enrolled student in High school and got an A+ while having AP classes and taking other college courses. He is very demanding but essay's and assignments were very easy to do. He does give a lot of extra credit but he is very rude if you don't do something the way he likes it.
He was a great professor, at times a bit strict but overall was very fair. You do have to read a few books for this class. He gave the class many resources to succeed in his class. He was easy to contact via email and zoom. I would 100% take his class or chose him as a professor again.
