Very hard grader. If you are not willing to put in the work do not take this prof! very nice guy tho! extremely funny!
He is so funny! Class goes by quickley, there are no papers and only 2 tests. He does give pop quizes so try to go to class regularly. I really enjoyed his class.
I love Dr. Nam. He is kinda hard but he is so nice and will help you with anything you need. He loves it if you come to his office to chat. He still stumbles on his english a very little bit but it is so cool when he does. He is very energetic and loves teaching. I had him twice and I am taking him again next semester cause I want to.
Prof. Nam is an awesome prof. yet he still a harsh grader, so if you're a slacker, don't take his class. Quizzes are unannounced, so if you're never there, it will kill your grade. Tests were multiple choice and some questions were "debatable" but overall he's a great prof. and his lectures are always interesting. I'm taking him again next semester
He's really energetic so class goes by fast. As long as you take notes and study them for an hour or two before the test, you should do fine. No attendance policy, but he gives unannounced quizzes. All quizzes are open note, unfortunately tests are not. He's a great professor, I'd take him again
Great teacher. Very involved and enthusiastic about topics and classes. Makes you debate a lot. If you are very vocal and pay attention to the readings then you will pass with ease. Taking again next semester.
Pretty awesome teacher, i just needed an elective so i chose him. I rarely showed up for class but when i did it was pretty good. He'll forget to give out quizzes and you have 2 exams and 2 papers. !st exam is always hard but the papers you can slack away and get an A or B. 2nd exam is alot easier
2Test 2papers, pop quizzes, really easy
Great professor! Requires a good bit of studying the book and additional material (scholarly articles). Research assignment can be challenging, but was not impossible to do well on.
Awesome professor. Very funny. He will teach you a theory and then tell you why the theroy sucks or has holes in it. Oh, and your vote doesn't count, accept it.
He's an alright teacher and is always motivated in his lectures but the tests are super hard. He gives essays easy grades , but the lectures sometimes bore you.
Great guy and excellent teacher, if you want to learn a lot, take his class. however if you slack off and dont do the readings, participate in class, or understand his directions on the papers, you will fail hes an extremely hard grader. Tests in 311 are all essay. Tests in 210 are all multiple choice. Very helpful if you go to his office.
I love the topic, but the teacher wasn't my cup of tea. He was REALLY enthusiastic in his lectures, but when I went to him for help, he didn't seem to care. On a good note, he encouraged me to learn everything on my own & to seek other professors help (use my resources). Some say he's easy, but it really depends on the person. Good luck ;)
Wish i didnt take the class =[
He was my favorite professor my freshman year. He is extremely enthusiastic with a great personality. He definitely made us laugh a lot. However, he is a hard grader when it comes to papers. His exams are multiple choice (review the pop quizzes) and I would recommend reading the book. Keep up with the material and you should be fine.
He is a nice guy.BUT a nasty teascher. he is friendly but a really harsh grader. midterm and final tests. pop quizzes. 2 papers. This class made me change my major. It was redic hard for me and he makes you think on your own a lot without any help. Hes friendly but he admits he grades like an ass making it hard to do well. READ THE BOOK!!
He expects alot from students. Requires alot of work.
He is ok. Very hard grader. Pop-quizzes are open note, open book, but he usually has 1 or 2 on there from the reading you should have read the night before, so bring your book to class. Nice & funny guy, but don't be misled into thinking he's an easy A.
very enthusiastic teacher. extremely interesting lectures. overall good class and teacher!
DO NOT TAKE!! WISH I DID NOT TAKE HIM!! I had an interest in Politics prior to taking this Professor. Definitely teaches like it's NOT a 101 class. Grades extremely hard! Does NOT speak clearly; very hard to understand his powerpoints. NO HELP WHATSOEVER!
Hardest gen ed I have ever taken! He's a really nice guy, and super enthusiastic about his subject, but he gives pop quizzes if he even thinks you're using a cell phone. Midterm, final, 2 papers and 10 quizzes. Extremely hard grader
AVOID! .. Hard to understand and a very harsh grader! Drop it if u can!
i would not recommend him. im 3rd year so im not just some freshman complaining cuz i have to do real work in college. he has a horrible accent, thinks everyone should be as smart as him. plus side is he is very friendly and his papers can have EVERY line as a citation. but it is a boring class and i dont think he should be your first POSC prof
Prof. Nam was my favorite teacher last semester. He WILL challenge you and you do need to read the book, but I learned so much in his class. If you listen to what he's saying and take notes you will be totally fine. He's very funny and an all around great teacher.
Prof. Nam was my favorite teacher last semester. He is very knowledgeable and keeps class interesting. The class is HARD though and he will CHALLENGE you, but his class made me feel like I was getting my money's worth out of college. I learned a lot and I highly suggest him. :)
Loves participation. He can make you feel very uncomfortable when he knows you have not came to class prepared. Grades papers harshly (sometimes I'm not sure what he's looking for). With that said, he's an awesome professor who will teach you a great deal. Tries to involve students as much as possible.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! Seriously the worst experience that i have had in a college class. He is EXTREMELY biased and does not like it when you don't agree with his political views. He is an impossible grader and is hard to understand. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST!!!!!
Nam's a cool guys and really funny but this class was rough. i was grateful for my C. i had no idea what was going on. tough grader. make sure you keep up with the reading.
This guy is an incredible teacher. He will make you work. I mean why are we in college? He LOVES his job and is VERY passionate. That in itself is truly inspiring. HINT dont bring a cell phone to class :)
Did not like his papers at all
Very funny teacher! He's very passionate about poli-sci, but sometimes he is unclear. There are pop quizzes if he thinks someone is using a cell phone, but all of his quizzes are open note/open book, so they really just boost your grade. He can be a harsh grader for essays, but all you have to do is work hard on them not do them the night before
Everyone told me to drop the class as soon as they heard who my prof was. He actually isnt that bad, and he is very entertaining. Focus on the notes he gives you, and also the points they stress in the book. I got an A, and did not have to work as hard as everyone said I would have too.
Very difficult grader, the tests are multiple choice but involved questions. I had no idea what he wanted from me in my essays. That being said, class is fun. I'd take him for every class if I wasn't worried about my grade, but since I am, I will never take him again.
Changed my major after his class. Didn't like his teaching style. Read straight from a PowerPoint that had random points on it. He didn't connect those back to any main idea/topic. That made it hard to study. You couldn't group things together, you had to study every small detail he covered. Tests are MC but questions are random, detailed and HARD.
Nam is a very interesting person. He's very funny. But with that being said be careful when fellow students make comments if you laugh because they say something dumb you will seriously regret it. The title of class was very misleading. Hard grader, smart guy,go to class because its hard to keep up with his lectures and the way he speaks.
Professor Nam was a hilarious teacher. Made alot of jokes and his discussions were quite interesting. We had 3 exams and two papers. Exam was all multiple choice and not hard if you studied the lecture notes well. Papers, however, we're graded harsh. HATED THEM but wasn't too difficult if you did them on time.
Dr. Nam is entertaining in class, but his exams were based off of random things he mentioned during his power points. I found that he was very hard to follow, and I did awful on his tests (even after studying for weeks). I felt like the class was hopeless. Thank goodness I did well on the papers or I would not have received the grade I did.
He's a really nice guy and is interesting but beware his tests! They have things from the power points in class but mostly come from the textbook. He's also not very forgiving when it comes to missing quizzes or trying to take tests early. Overall he's ok as a teacher but I probably won't take another of his classes if I can avoid it
This guy is tough. I am a straight A student and I struggled alot. He thinks in a very particular way and his multiple choic are subjective. His class is less about the subject and more about him. The lectures are interesting but who cares when the tests and papers are impossible? Don't do it, just don't.
Dr. Nam is not an easy professor, but that's not a bad thing. His classes are interesting and they properly challenge you as a college student. He can also be funny at times. Also, he's strict about cell phones; avoid breaking the rule. If you want an easy A, he's not for you. But if you want to learn, then he is a great professor!
Nam is a tough professor, but that is what's so great about him. He uses his own book, so he knows what to except on his quizzes. No cellphones or you will get a pop-quiz. Make sure you take notes because that is what 75% of the test will be on. Other than that if you read the important stuff in the books and do alright on the essays you'll do ok!
Professor Nam does seem to genuinely care about his subject and helping his students understand the complexities of political science. He is a difficult grader on the two required essays, but does advise students to visit his office hours and talk about the first drafts of essays. Stay ahead on reading and attend class and you will be fine.
His lecture material has no flow and is completely unclear. He doesn't review before exams and adds in extra material at the last second. His tests are confusing, with multiple answers that could be considered correct. He is completely inaccessible, never answers emails. He is also a horrible grader when it comes to papers. Don't take him.
extremely hard teacher for a 101 class. Examples are about Asian culture, so I can be hard if you are not familiar with Asian culture. His grading on 2, 8 page research papers is tuff. barely survived in the class and went to every lecture, took all the notes, and read all the reading. I do not recommend this professor.
Hard, but hey, it's college.
Dr. Nam knows what he is talking about he just doesn't know how to present it in an understandable way. The two papers are terrible and the tests are so-so. Write everything down from the lectures and if you attend every class and pay attention, you will pass.
He knows what he is talking about in his lectures. However, you better a study a week in advance for his test because if you don't, you'll be lucky to walk out of that class with a C. The papers are even worse; you have to do some very thorough research about your topic before you can actually type it up. If you take him, best of luck to you.
If you want to be challenged and learn about the world from someone with a different and interesting world view, take Nam. If you want to just get by with Cs, take a different course.
People give Dr. Nam a hard time. No reason, he just expects a lot of his students. Very wise, a deep thinker. Don't leave early; he may give out a free pop-quiz to the kids who hang around for the duration of the class. Also, the guy is just ridiculously funny.
Took him for an international relations course and it was extremely interesting. He is a thorough grader on your research papers but rightfully so considering your given the entire semester to write it. Tests are challenging but if you keep up with your reading a attend class EVERY DAY you will do fine.
Definitely learned a lot in his class. Would take him again but if you already have a busy schedule I would not advise it. If you do not read and study constantly, you will fail his tests and be totally lost in his lectures, which gives you a terrible grade in his class. He loves pop quizzes for phone disturbances lol . Lastly, he is hilarious.
You have to read, if you dont read you wont pass. I've taken him for 3 classes, his 100 and 200 lvl courses are completely different than his 400 lvl but the important thing is READ and PARTICIPATE. He is a bit tough but definitely worth it .You'll learn a lot with him and he's hilarious. Overall my favorite professor at SU.
Dr. Nam is a nice guy, and I enjoyed the discussion and insight in his class, but he's definitely difficult as a professor. It's hard to get a hold of him since he isn't great about answering emails or being at his office during posted hours, and you definitely need to study hard for his exams. A great guy, but not one of my favorite polisci profs.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. This does not represent a gen ed, or even someone starting out in political science. I feel like I'm in a 400-Level Graduate class.
Dropped the class. DO NOT TAKE AS A GEN ED. This should not be a gen ed.
NO!!!! DONT DO IT! Just NOOOOO
why dis a gen ed
He is a tough grader, the tests are very detailed, even his multiple choice questions are infamously challenging. This is my third class with him and I would definitely take another because of the challenge. If you don't really enjoy learning and reading don't take any of his classes because he really expects the students to be deeply involved.
I took this class because it was number 420 and I thought it would be funny, but now I'm an expert on the Chinese government and military infrastructure, so there's that. There's only 2 exams and a paper but the preparation needed for these assignments is awful! There's also random quizzes every now and then so make sure to read sometimes.
Nam's classes are challenging. But you learn a lot about other parts of the world, as long as you are willing to do the work. Get to know him outside of class. You'll get a lot more out of the class.
Don't skip class if you want anything above an F in the class. He doesn't post grades and doesn't hand back most assignments so be prepared to not know your grade. Don't even buy the book, it's a waste of money. Be prepared to have "cell phone quizzes" at least twice a week. If there's another 101 professor available, take them instead.
I really like he instructor, but he has high expectations.
Hilarious guy! Keeps you captivated in lectures & discussions and talks about current events. Looots of group projects. He grades SUPER tough, so if you want genuine feedback and to be pushed, take him. The quizzes are just if someone's phone goes off, but they boost your grade a bit since he is a hard grader. You don't have to get the book.
Not a good professor to take. Replaces creativity and passion in lectures with eccentricity and madness after a lecture his board is always filled with squiggly lines, not useful info. Replaces class standards with unnecessary rules that dont seem to order the class, but instead work to assuage his personality and psychological ticks.
Nam is very funny, dedicated, and knowledgeable. But his class is impossible. You NEED the book. I read every chapter, followed the syllabus to a T and studied my ass off and am still failing. The exams are obscure at best. All you're graded on is 2 exams, 2 group papers, and a solo one. The groups are also impossible to succeed in.
Favorite professor I've had. He is hard, but you learn a lot and you'll do fine if you work hard and do the work. Don't let the first day discourage you, also he really is good at BJJ he isn't lying. One of my favorite parts was that what we learned in class was what we were tested on, not necessarily stuff from the chapters.
As an International Studies major, I knew this class was going to be hard but I was ready to be challenged. Dr. Nam was easily the most unsupportive instructor I have ever had. He would give minimal feedback on papers, would take nearly a week to respond to any of my emails or questions, and gave me a 0 out of the blue. Do not recommend at all
Took Dr. Nam in person before COVID. Highly recommend in person. He is very tough but an awesome and wild professor. I have heard to avoid an online course with him like the plague so be wary of that. Otherwise he was great, funny, and just a cool guy to learn about and from. I highly recommend reading often, but every reading is not necessary.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Does not actually teach us anything and instead brags constantly about himself and his own achievements. Does not give helpful feedback on assignments.
Enjoyed the class until the very end. Gave me a 0 on the final assignment and accused me of plagiarism with no facts and is an awful communicator. I protested the decision and will see what happens. Syllabus is extremely disorganized and difficult to understand.
My brother passed away during the semester and he almost wouldnt let me make up ONE quiz that I missed. He ignored my emails when I tried to discuss a way to deal with everything that was happening. He is not understanding and does not seem to care about helping you succeed.
Hardest paper grader I have had, demands quality work, but it will help u in the long run. Overall amazing man who cares about his students, he is a little too hard sometimes tho. The exams are very hard, they are based on the lectures and some questions weren't discussed in class either. All exams are open book and notes tho so it helps.
Im a senior international relations major and i think that ive had almost every professor from the POSC department at least once and Nam is my favorite. His classes are very difficult but he still explains well, grades fairly, and has fun lectures.
I seriously cannot stand this guy. He can be fun, but it can also be easily ruined by him. The rudeness isn't cool either and the way he makes you feel small and dumb makes me want to attend and pay less attention each lecture. Tough grader and I am not exaggerating, he will have a pop quiz if you left class while you're gone. Never again.
Prof Nam is an old-fashioned type, so if you want to succeed, make sure to be in class on-time,do not touch your phone and do not interrupt the class by leaving the room. But he will understand you if you have legitimate reasons to be late/leave the class, etc. Just no monkey business. This is not a high school anymore, so welcome to the adult life!
While he is a fun person as a person, I whole heartly do not recommend him as a professor. His lectures almost always fail to cover what should be done because of his tendency to ramble on about whatever hits his mind. He is a very hard grader, which he likes to brag about and often his assignments are hard to pin down what he really wants or grade
- he gives out quizzes as soon as someone leaves the room. -get the book if you enjoy reading, otherwise the material will be in lecture. -gave us extra credit opportunities just for him to not add the points he promised correctly. -gives no genuine feedback on essays. -too many pop quizzes - only good thing is that the lectures are interesting
While Professor Nam is extremely funny and his lectures are entertaining. He is a very tough grader and extremely unforgiving when it comes to missing class or making up work. He gives no exceptions for late work no matter what and will ignore you if something personal comes up that requires time away. He gives pop quizzes almost every class.
Dr. Nam is very nice as a person, nut his class is a bit confusing. I feel that he would be best suited for those who want to pursue political science as a major and already have some knowledge on it. He thoroughly enjoys real world examples so keep that in mind for test essays and papers. I would say to study read his book rather than only notes.
Dr. Nam is hilarious and his lectures are entertaining, but he's the toughest grader I've had. His tests aren't as bad as everyone says, but the group project is disorganized and graded very harshly. There are plenty of opportunities to succeed, but he's very particular about many things, namely phones. The class is difficult, but not impossible.
Professor Nam is quite literally the best professor I have ever had. He is hilarious in the way that he teaches but he is heavy on respect. Don't disrupt the lecture, leave the room, go on your phone or anything and you will be fine. He is a tough grader but he will teach you what you need to learn. If you want to learn take him.
Loved him in all the classes i had with him
Very STRICT on attendance and wants you to be PRESENT in class meaning do not leave or be on your phone. Respect is a big thing for him. Great teacher had really good discussions, tougher on grading, can be lenient at times, funny, and quizzes easy but bigger project not so much.
I was put into Professor Nam's class for a Gen Ed. I was immediately shocked from hearing you pop quizzes are given when students leave to even use the bathroom or if one singular phone notification goes off. I worked hard to maintain a C and after the final, Nam decided he didn't weigh his assignments correctly. Not much prior info for tests also.
Professor Nam was a good person in the classroom, but as a teacher, he caused lots of stress. His class was highly dependent on the readings outside of class and he was very lecture heavy. His grading process was extremely strict and will not round you up even 1 point to boost your letter grade regardless of your attendance and participation.
This is by far one of the best professors you will take at SU. I have taken him since the beginning of my career here and he has taught me more than any professor. He will stop the entire class if he sees a phone and give you a pop quiz but it forces you to be present and learn in class. He will make you work for your grade but it will be with it.
Dr. Nam is a great lecturer however his grading criteria is super specific and the first paper he makes so that you don't do well. The "cumulative" final was all on one lecture which resulted in me doing awfully due to him telling us it was on all of the info. I am done with his courses and hope to not see him again.
Dr. Nam is a hard professor, but is so amazing. Much better in upper levels compared to lower levels. You need to do the readings so you can participate and his office hours are super helpful. The class is a lot of work, but worth it. Pop quizzes aren't fun, but normally pretty straight forward and was covered during class
To be honest Professor Nam is probably the worst professor in the political science department. He's not understanding at all. Good luck if you need any accommodations. His tests are also meant to be overly confusing even for a 101 class. His thick accent kind of makes it hard to understand him and it's definitely not worth the trouble in general
Dr. Nam thinks way too highly of himself and thinks that an introductory course should be the only priority of his students. Any sort of action considered disruptive is grounds for an immediate pop quiz (seeing or hearing a cell phone). Don't even think about leaving class for any reason, even going to the bathroom.
Professor Nam is honestly one of the best and worst professors I have taken. His standards are incredibly high, with challenging grading on the papers but the multiple choice tests and free responses are typically based directly on lecture notes with one or two from the supplemental reading. His lectures are mid but repetitive between courses.
BEWARE OF NAM!!! His lectures are open and engaging but overall they tend to be open forums of discussion. Get him talking and he doesn't stop. CELL PHONE QUIZZES. I personally like the tech rules because they lead to more class engagement but all notes are handwritten so beware. This was my final class with him and THANK GAWD for that
I was terrified to take Nam, but he ended up being just fine. He likes to intimidate students but once you get through the first week, you realize it was just for show. I actually think he's kind of funny. Just turn your phone off so you don't get as many pop quizzes. You're allowed 6 absences before dropping a letter grade which is pretty normal.
I enjoyed his class. He is really passionate about the topics in our lectures which makes the period fly by. Everything is handwritten so make sure your notes are detailed, but other than that, the class is easy to get by after the first week. Just as long as you actually attend every class. Lectures are in order and he continues without stopping.
