respect and care about student lots of homework but encourage group discussion
Absolutely one of the best professors I've had here. Class itself was great and educational, but he goes above and beyond to help you out with everything, from class content itself to other life advice.
p chem has to be one of the hardest classes for chem majors and i'm glad i took him. make sure you do the homework and understand them. if you don't understand something he is always available to help. does give extra credits on exams.
He can explain the contents really well and it makes learning so much easier. If you just look at the textbook, it will be much harder for you to understand.
He was a great professor !
He is a great professor !
Straightforward and gives review sessions before exams. Most of your grade will be from the homework, but tests are still important. Easy to pass, but you'll have to study a lot for an A. Study the homework problems HEAVILY if you want an A on the tests.
Overall, for Chem 1332 he was one of the best teachers out there. His notes are much better than other teachers and he goes over conceptual questions very well. He is available outside of class for help and is very willing. His reviews are also great, sometimes he just takes too long to explain some things. Would def take again!
Ty creates his own handouts for the students to use. Bring this handout to class as that is what he uses to teach. He goes over the theory of the subject and then applies this to the problems in the handout. You will rarely find yourself going through the textbook since his handouts are very useful. Great professor and inspirational.
Dr. Chen makes really helpful handouts that summarise everything important in the book. Very accessible outside class and is always respectful of students. The only professor I would recommend for chem 2; seriously, if you have to wait a semester just to take him then do it.
Dr. Chen is one of the best professors I've ever had! He is very caring and respectful to his students. He is also very understanding and wiling to help his students out of class. I would definetly reccomend him for Chem 2 .. He will not be teaching next semester but he will be back Spring 2018 so you should definetly wait and take him!
If you're taking Chem 2 then please take him!! Absolutely best professor ever! He makes his own handouts that summarize the content, which makes it super easy to learn
Chen is one of the best professors that I have encountered. He understands you have other classes, especially if most of the class is not studying something chemistry related as a major. If you go to every lecture and understand the notes that you take in the handouts he gives, you should be more than prepared to get a good grade in the class.
Professor Chen is the best Chem2 professor you could possibly wish for. The man is an inspiration to all and helps you in any and all ways to ensure you will get the grade you want. You will work for it, but I would definitely take his class over any day. Also, go to him for office hours. He gives some amazing advice.
By far the best chem II professor at UH. He has a gift at simplifying concepts, and makes the class enjoyable. His handouts are easy to follow, and emphasize the CORRECT material to learn. He genuinely wants the best for his students, and will help you if you need it. He gives review handouts before exams that help. I would strongly recommend him.
Dr. Chen is very helpful if you come to him for help at the beginning. If you show that you are serious and you care about this class, you will pass this class easily.
Very good teacher, actually cares about his teaching method and students. Explains difficult topics well, and will only improve with time. He taught pchem 1 for me, and I would recommend recording the lectures.
PChem 1 is a hard subject, but Dr. Chen explains it in the easy ways for us to understand. Keep up with doing homework and ask him for help whenever youre struggling, you will definitely get an A.
He has a very specific grading criteria and as long you do the homework, which is almost 50%, youre guaranteed to at least pass. The TAs that grade the homework can make mistakes so make sure to get those checked. He is really helpful as long as you come in early and put in the time to learn the material. He can get lost sometimes in his lectures
Dr. Chen is an incredible professor. He teaches each lecture with passion and makes absolutely sure to get each concept across very clearly. PChem 1 is known to be an arduous class for many students, however, Dr. Chen delivers on every front to the point where all the students are highly motivated to succeed.
Professor Chen is the best general chemistry professor at UH, you should definitely take his class. He is very passionate about his teachings, makes his own notes/handouts, reviews in class, and answers emails very quickly. Honestly, this was the first time I considered chemistry to be my favorite subject!
Professor Chen is very caring and passionate with chemistry. He gives out good reviews and takes time to help students out. If you get any chem professor at UH, get Chen!
Professor Chen is a nice professor and cares about his students, however the way he introduces the material and teaches in a very confusing way and is hard to understand. Also the way he writes out his notes is hard to read and is sloppy
I would learn the concepts on Sunday as I did the homework because he didnt make attendance mandatory and his lectures were so early that I didnt bother to go. He gives 1 point of extra credit and that is just too little for such a test heavy course that doesnt drop any tests. Chegg showed me how to work out the problems and got me an A.
The guy is sometimes too smart for us to simply understand. DO THE HOMEWORK! Watch videos about the subject before lecture so it can be easier to follow his slides. However, he is extremely caring, helpful, gives handouts for easy studying & is accessible. He really values input & tries to improve his class. Would recommend, just don't get behind
Chen has a really thick accent that makes him hard to understand. His handwriting is sloppy so hes hard to follow. He doesnt take attendance so thats nice but I ended up just teaching myself the material through chegg. This class is hard and Chen is probably one of the better choices. Botts videos & Chegg are your best friends for this class.
Chen is really great! He is the first chem professor I have that will give handouts to help you study that he made himself! You can tell he really cares for this students and wants you to do good. I would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Chen really goes out of his way to make sure students succeed in his class, but you have to meet him halfway. He makes his own handouts/notes to fill in for students and he goes over practice problems that students submit, but if you don't put in that same effort to show up to class and pay attention, you shouldn't feel entitled to a good grade
Chen is one of the best Chem professors at UH. He is very caring and wants to see his students succeed. He makes his own handouts and review sheets for midterms and finals. He is always available in his office if you have questions or need help. Although this class may not be an easy A, Chen really makes it worthwhile.
Dr. Chen is an outstanding, exemplary, respectable, and laudable professor. He is ready to help and is willing to create handouts, which narrows down and concisely presents the information for that chapter with it's calculations and formulas. He takes into account the student's perspective as he is teaching throughout the semester. In Chen we trust
Dr. Chen is a remarkable professor. He is incredibly devoted to his teaching, and he is open to any feedback. However, don't think that you can coast through Chen's class; homework assignments were challenging, but he taught us how to generally approach them during his lectures. PChem can be a tough course, but with Chen, you're in good hands.
Dr. Chen treats his students as equals. This level of respect truly makes you want to try harder in his class. Lectures are very important to attend. He will cover everything you need to know for the exams. We had to transition online halfway through the semester which was a challenge, but he still went out of his way! He's a great professor!!
Cares about students' understanding. Covers what is needed for the basics of HW and tests; repractice HWs to prepare for tests! Attendance was not mandated for online class but still go to lectures/at least watch recordings you won't pass w/o. You'll ofc need effort for a CHEM CLASS watch tutor vids ask q's. Great prof. I had no regrets taking.
Homework only counts for 6% of the grade, the rest is exams. Lockdown browser had some issues preventing people from accessing the first exam for some time. His response during the next Lecture was "you guys need to take responsibility for your actions and behave like adults." However, catered teaching style to student feedback and seemed to care.
Professor Chen is a great teacher. He is always looking for ways he can improve and help his students; he genuinely wants you to learn. He is quick to respond to questions through teams chat or email. Overall one of the best chemistry teachers I've ever had.
Dr. Chen is different from other chem profs I've had because he would take feedback from forms given out after every midterm and would actually try the methods his students suggested. He also would share tips and tricks that worked for some students with the entire class. Chen made dealing with the chem department bearable this semester! Highly rec
Dr. Chen is a wonderful professor. He really spends time trying to make sure that every little detail is made understandable for the whole class. The homework's can be long, but are doable. I was scared to take pchem 1, but he made the class amazing and really interesting for me.
He is a nice professor. He is so helpful and tries to help his students to succeed. If you pay attention to the materials and take notes you'll be fine.
Dr. Chen was EASILY the best chemistry professor at UH. He truly cared about us & wanted us to succeed. The class material was hard, but he really worked hard to make sure we knew what we were doing. He was clear about the material that would be tested. He was easy to get a hold of outside of class. Going to the lectures made all the difference.
Dr. Chen is an amazing professor. He is accessible outside of class. Respectful to students, and really tries to make sure everyone understands the material. However the class is not a cake walk. To succeed you need to study his notes and really spend time understanding the homework. His test are extremely fair and easy if you do this.
Probably the best chem prof at UH. His average are consistently higher than the other teachers, and his lectures are enjoyable and accessible. He post on yt (go subscribe) and on his teams so attendance not necessary. He's constantly up for helping his student, staying after longer for office hours, always responding to emails accordingly. 10/10
I think he's a good professor, but the lecture was just doing practice problems and you do most of the learning on your own by watching his youtube videos. Personally, that didn't work for me and I ended up skipping most of the lectures. I did well on assignments with those videos but not as well on the exams (not the professor's fault though).
Goated professor. Please totally take.
Dr. Chen actually makes chemistry make sense. He provides the conceptual explanation in YouTube videos, and works out a ton of problems in class. If you show up to class you don't have to worry about anything; 1 hw a week. Without a doubt best professor in the chem. department. The dude actually cares about students and about his work.
Professor Chen is amazing and really cares about his students. lectures are flipped where he posts lectures online and in class he goes through his handouts (containing everything you need to know about the chapter) and homework questions. If you follow his lead and practice everything he gives you, you will most likely pass the class with an A+.
I want to take a moment of silence and gratitude for this professor. I did not have him; however, if it had not been for his lecture notes posted online, I would not have succeeded in this class. My friends who had him enjoyed his lectures thoroughly as he summed the information up in a manner easier to understand. GIve this man an Emmy.
In class, he would do example problems that would be similar to those on the homework and exams. His notes were very simple and made learning easy. The actual lecture topics were made accessible online while the practice was in class. I never watched the lecture videos but I still got an A. If given the chance choose Dr. Chen.
Hybrid learning (posted lectures online & completed practice problems in class) didn't work for me. Ended skipping most lectures & relying on lecture videos/workshop to study. Overall, would highly recommend as his sections consistently score the highest compared to others. Just grind practice problems & utilize all HW attempts & you'll be okay.
Professor Chen was one of the best STEM professors I have had so far. He goes over a lot of practice problems during class which helps students understand the course better. Going to class really improved my grade! Additionally, I was at a B+ and he let me go over and correct my final which bumped me up to an A-. He is worth it!
Absolutely incredible professor, he cares about every single student he teaches.
Chemistry 2 can be a very hard class for some people, but Professor Chen makes this course lot less stressful. Any questions you have over homework, quizzes or practice problems he will answer and explain to you how to understand that concept, in office hours or through email. He provides good resources and study guides for chemistry 2.
I 100% recommend taking Professor Chen for Chemistry 2. He does a ton of practice problems during lectures and provides midterm reviews to well prepare students for the exams. Not only does he teach chemistry, but he also gives students advice on graduate/medical school applications. If you ever have any questions, he is always happy to help!
The chemistry department at UH has its flaws but Dr. Chen works his own format that works in the long run. Truly if you work how he asks you attend lectures even if him calling up people is scary, you will pass this course. He's on my list of respected professors and also very caught up with using technology to full extent in his lectures/ course.
I don't enjoy chemistry as a subject but he made it fun. His lectures were good and the practice material he also gave were helpful. His exams were similar to the practice exams but you need to know all types of questions for each exam.
Dr. Chen is an amazing professor! He ensures students learn the material, and records the in person lectures as well. Provides handouts as well. You watch pre-lecture videos before class and come in to class and he does a wide variety of practice problems similar to the homework. He also does exam reviews and uploads everything on teams. Very kind
His instruction method involves watching his online videos that cover the theory behind the concept and he'll work on practice problems in class. For chemistry, you want to make sure you work as many practice problems as possible. At some point he will review the medical and pharmacy school admissions process, so make sure you attend class for it.
Professor Chen saved my chem grade. I didn't do too well in chem 1 since I didn't enjoy Larsen's way of teaching. Chen teaches by solving problems again and again until you recognize the pattern. I did well on the tests, but if you're one that likes to understand theory, maybe pick a someone else.
Dr Chen is so far the best professor ive had, he is a kind and caring person and wants to see his students succeed not only in his class but life in general.
Very good professor. Posts youtube videos online so going to class is optional.
Great teacher, watch the online videos and he posts all his lectures online honestly the best teacher i've had at UH so far, put in the work and you'll see good results
Amazing profesor, like genuinely. I took Larsen for chem 1 and didn't like that he taught a lot of concept compared to problems, and Chen was a life saver as he gave examples and concepts that made the exams so much easier. Put in the work and it will make this course sm easier.
Really good at explaining chemistry. Chemistry isn't a strong subject of mine but Chen made it so much easier with practice questions and clear explanations.
Professor Chen does his class in an odd way. He assigned 2-4 videos a week where the actual content is taught, then goes over practice problems in class. You honestly kind of need to learn everything before class or else you'll be lost, which can be frustrating. But he is fair and is open to helping if you ask.
Professor Chen is an absolute gem! His brilliance, warmth, and unwavering support create a truly uplifting learning experience. Every lecture feels like a masterclass, and their passion lights up the room. I've never felt more motivated, inspired, or grateful to be in a class.
Amazing professor. He is so passionate about what he does and is eager to see his students succeed. Does a lot of practice problems and makes things easy to understand.
He truly is the best Chem professor at UH, would definitely recommend him. Professor chen works out a lot of problems with the students which is really great.
His class is hard. Chem is hard. But he's cool. So you'll be cool.
Very good professor, uses a flipped classroom teaching style that helps a lot. It can be a lot of work outside of class sometimes but my grade improved a lot from last semester. His reviews are really helpful and he offers 2 extra credit points and partial credit for exams.
Chem is definitely hard but Chen is the best chem 2 professor at UH. posts videos and notes online and explains it very clearly even if his teaching style is a bit unique.
One of the best professors in the chem department at UH. He uploads note videos that you watch before the day of class, and the. you do practice problems during class. He provides many sources for practice problems that pertain to the test. There is no unnecessary notes, unlike most professors give.
Dr Chen is for sure one of the best professors of UH's chemistry department. He summarizes everything we need to know about a chapter in one-page handouts, and does a lot of practice problems that are similar to what you'll see in the homework in class. If you do get stuck on a problem, definitely go to his office hours, or contact him on Teams
Dr. Chen is amazing, even if you don't end up taking him watch his YouTube videos. He makes the content really easy, you're guaranteed an A if you follow his lead as long as you watch the YouTube videos and do the reviews. He also does partial credit for tests.
He's one of the best professors in the Chem department. He gives partial credit for the tests, and he provides ample material to study from. Furthermore, he engages with the students during the lecture with practice questions. He also gives advice about medical school which is awesome.
He cares about his students. Just make the effort to come to class and watch his lecture videos before coming to class (flipped class). He does practice problems during class which helps on exams. Do the practice exams and ask around for others so you can get used to questions. I made 90+ on all my exams. 1312 is better than 1311, so no worries!
He genuinely cares about his students, and makes lecture videos so that concepts can be learned on the student's own time. He also allows students to gain partial credit on exams for any questions that require calculations. If there are any flaws it's because of the Chemistry department itself, not because of him as a professor.
Dr. Chen is a really entertaining professor and deeply cares a lot for his students. He posts his lectures on YouTube and teams. He gives extra credit on exams that can really help your grade. When he gets ahead of schedule in lecture he lectures on the medical/dental/pa/nursing school track and the differences between each one.
Pretty solid and well-meaning, can definitely tell he cares about his students. Genuinely helpful, watch his prelecture videos and practice practice practice the practice tests, and the class will be pretty smooth sailing
Professor Chen is awesome! He records his lectures, and he gives opportunities to get points back on exams. The course is test-heavy and more math-based, but Chen makes the content easy to understand and the math simpler to do. He has pre-recorded videos you have to watch before class, but I used the book. If you're taking Chem 2, take Chen!!
If I had to choose a favorite chem teacher, it would be Chen. He is very accommodating when it comes to attendance and provides recorded lectures to those who are unable to make it to class. He also provides an opportunity to receive some credit for missed exam questions. Hands down, the best chem teacher on UH campus.
This is my second time taking Chem 2 with Dr. Chen. When I took him last semester, I knew how helpful he was, but I did not use his resources. Use his resources from the start! Pay attention to lectures and follow his handouts! Ask questions when you don't understand! He responds to emails very quickly. Ask him about grad school and med school apps
TY is seriously one of the best professors at UH. He really just wants to help you get the grade that you want. Obviously you need to put in the time and effort to learn the material, but he organizes everything in an easy way to follow along. TY is there to help! If you need help, ask early!! He really cares about his students.
Professor Chen is amazing! Chem 2 is very calculation based, but he will go over many examples during the lecture and show every single formula you need for the midterms. He's very helpful on explaining difficult concepts and will keep explaining until you get it fully. He gives nice life/study advice before midterms, which is very thoughtful!
Chen is hands down the best chem prof at UH. He genuinely cares for student success which is so refreshing to see. He posts on yt which carried me. He's a great guy and his teaching is too. I wish we had more profs like him in NSM. Study practice tests and you'll pass. Grading is also pre curved
Dr. Chen has very organized lectures which he also posts to his YouTube channel. He speaks clearly and always answers questions in an understandable manner. His practice exams clearly reflect the actual exams and prepare you very well.
Dr. Chen is the best Gen Chem 2 professor I could've asked for. He genuinely cares about his students and is very flexible regarding his office hours. He also posts every lecture online on his YouTube Channel, which is super helpful when you don't understand something he said during class or when reviewing for a test. I would 100% recommend him.
Absolutely AMAZING! went from sucking at chem to doing good. Has a curved grading scale, he breaks down topics so it's easier for us to remember. DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT TAKING ANYONE ELSE. once you take his class you'll understand no one else would be able to compete.
Avoid falling behind, be proactive. I highly recommend going to his office hours because he'll explain things more in depth, sometimes he skips over important topics in the lectures. Print out the handouts, pay attention in class and the class will be a breeze. He's very caring for his students, would take again.
