It was an easy class and she was very accommodating.
Her lectures are quite monotone and not enthusiastic at all, which can make it hard to follow along or listen. You also need to listen to everything she's saying during lecture (what's written on slides is just a bit of info). Marks fairly, but her tests are difficult and worded really weirdly. She also rarely replies to emails.
All the other professors seem to maintain a neutral opinion in their lectures as much as they can, but she just gives her own political opinions on the examples. If you have a similar political opinion with her, you will enjoy her class, if not, I'd recommend dropping out ASAP.
*COURSE CORRECTION*: PSYCH 2AA3 Child Development (option wasn't available). Unfortunately, I found this course to be really boring. I was expecting it to be fun and enjoyable, but the lack of expression when teaching was extremely frustrating. :( She was quite monotone and not accommodating to personal situations. Would not recommend.
Blatantly unfair grader! it's the first time of my life being this stressed and anxious about improving my marks! her marking system is just all over the place, smallest mistake would take you from a level 4 to a 2 with little to no explanation! so strict for no obvious reason!
Unorganized curriculum and lectures. No textbook but you must buy tophat. Many test questions have multiple right answers with only one being correct. Empty slides that force you to listen to her meandering lectures just in case something critical is not on the slide.
The course I attended was asynchronous, making it inherently pretty low effort. What makes it tough is her way of grading, although I didnt find her unfair or super difficult. The course content however is just not great, it's a lot of the same stuff, as the topic is very narrow, and the lectures are generally not very engaging and foreseeable.
not accomodating. test questions are unclear.
DO NOT take! She failed the class on written part of test because she told us if we used word for word definiton we would get a 0. But then says because it was not her exact definition gave everyone 0 on written. She boosted class 10-15% just to make the average normal. TA's are HORRIBLE. They gave everyone between 40-60% on assignments.
Absolutely Horrible!! She tries hard to be tough and to keep 'high standards' when teaching but she's doing the opposite. docking students an abnormal amount of points for small errors or oversights and never gets satisfied.
Would not suggest as marking is erratic often with minimal reasoning. Quizzes and assignments focus on material stated once in lecture, in brackets.
Very bland syllabus which she does not seem to really follow. Unreasonable late penalties even with 0 mention in the syllabus. Gradings are unpredictable and arbitrary. Both TA and instructor very hard to reach. They vanished for half a semester and most markings were held up until the final weeks. TA changes narratives when questioned about marks.
Professor finally got back to my question months later, but her response showed that she does not even know what she taught anymore. TA is the same unhelpful. TA responded to email weeks after, and her response is the opposite of prof's lecture. Very poor competence and academic proficiency demonstrated by both.
Class was not enjoyable, started to become a chore as there are so many things to attend to throughout each week. Summarizing key lecture concepts in 50 words is a pain. Her marking is seemingly arbitrary, and supposedly testing for knowledge midterm/exam questions were way more complex than they should have been. Would not recommend.
Kind & a good, cohesive lecturer. Class is well-structured and weekly assignments really help reinforce FASCINATING material. Though, she is hard to reach, unaccommodating and VERY rigid with late policies. Marking is hard and arbitrary + feedback is unhelpful. I REALLY want to fully enjoy 2E03, but stringent expectations are a bit demoralizing.
Very unaccommodating; she was my only teacher that gave me issues with my SAS this semester. Although the weekly assignments we had to complete helped reinforce class material, the way she writes her tests r more complex than needed. She never responds to emails and her marking is arbitrary/inconsistent. Biggest regret of my undergraduate so far:(
HARD, arbitrary marking and the scheme is unbelievably vague. TA (Valentina)'s feedback rarely makes sense and she will often backtrack or change it when asked to clarify. Neither prof nor TA respond to emails. I am too busy agonizing over my precis so I don't get marked 0 for a 51/50 word count to connect with the otherwise interesting material.
The worst professor I've ever had in my three years of university! Complicated and wordy exam questions, bad grader but does not provide you with an explanation to why u got such a grade! And never seems to care about students concernes or problems
I'm not sure why people are complaining about this course. I really enjoyed it and liked Dr. Mac's lecturing style. I thought the content was digestible and her testing was very fair. I would definitely take it again!
I didn't like her at first because she tends to go at a slow pace and her slides seemed disorganized. The first midterm was a mess, with many questionable answers that were never addressed; however after getting our feedback in the middle of the term, she did improve. The 2nd midterm was much better and I did end up liking her more :)
*PSYCH 2B03. I was unsure about her when I took 2E03, because grading was relatively tough, but I ended with an A after acclimating a bit and learned a LOT. Dr. Mac is a very effective, organized, and clear lecturer. She is incredibly gifted when it comes to delivering content in an interesting and accessible way.
I can't say I loved how the precis were graded (docked marks felt arbitrary at times), but Dr. Mac is SUCH a good lecturer, and the entire course was incredibly well organized. She is very personable, passionate, and kind--clearly cares a lot about teaching. Negative reviews are likely salty about their precis marks lol.
I LOVE taking courses with Dr. Mac and think she has a great lecture style. I have taken a handful of courses with her (taking two more this semester) and have always found her tests to be extremely fair and representative of the content. She is one of my favourite professors and I'm not sure why her ratings aren't higher.
Her slides are organized and easy to follow and study from. You **need to take notes about what she is saying**, do NOT solely relay on her slides. Know it's testable if she's repeating it or glancing at her computer for specific points. Overall, it was really fun to engage in her class and she's chill. Tests are... interesting, but she comes thru
Very mono toned and unenthusiastic. Pretty much read the slides with brief elaborations. I did not learn too much or felt inspired by her. Her tests were very hard and ambiguous. Her quizzes were good but did not prepare you for what was coming. Class final assignment was fair and fun. Text was good but online only which sucked. Not the worst prof.
I had MacGowan for 2AP3+2B03 and really enjoyed her as a professor. Her tests were super fair and she is quite caring. She doesn't provide recordings of class (only transcripts) and part of the grade depends on attending class. I thought that the grading breakdown was great- her multiple choice isn't as hard as other psych profs. Would recommend
Seems like a very nice woman but she is so boring and makes the content so unbearable to get through. Makes classes mandatory just for them to be as mind numbing as possible. I would recommend the course if anyone else is teaching it, avoid her if you want an engaging education experience.
I genuinely dont know why this prof has such a low rating, yes there is attendance but its designed so you can miss a few classes. She is very fair in her questions, if you go to class and listen to what she says it is easy to do very well. She is very nice and her assignments are fun and allow for creativity. I'm in 2AP3 as well and shes a gem
Waste of my time, decent course but the professor extremely boring and made the course feel like it dragged on. Would recommend the course if any other instructor is teaching it, avoid MacGowan if you can
Exam was terrible, questions were not worded very well, the fill in the blanks were not clear at all. Her teaching is ok.
Zont zo it
Exam was horrific, not fair at all. Lectures are boring, very monotonous. Participation is mandatory and lectures aren't recorded. Didn't like her teaching style, would not recommend her courses.
Very boring and dull lectures, which are mandatory and not recorded. She is a very hard marker and the exam was very difficult (much more difficult than the midterm). Overall I did not like the structure of this course or her teaching style. I would not take one of her courses again and would not recommend.
Exam was god awful, fill in the blanks unclear, majority of questions ambiguous, allegedly cumulative, pretty much not. Class assignments fair, mid term okay. Lectures and textbook fine, boring, great content but makes you not want to learn it. Insensitive to topics that may be hurtful to others (eating disorders for example).
I wouldn't recommend taking a course by her to even the person I hate most in this world. She clearly does not care about the content being taught, makes lectures painfully boring to sit through (mandatory and not recorded btw), and does not prepare us whatsoever for the final. Exam was super hard to get through, 0/10 professor. Avoid if possible.
Don't take any of her classes, horrible experience you should avoid if you can.
content is easy but my marks aren't great bc her quizzes/tests are so hard. fill in the blanks are very unclear & she tests on content she says once in lecture (not even written down). also kind of unprofessional imo (like not knowing how to pronounce the names of researchers she teaches on). overall not a great class
She absolutely ruined what could've been a great course. Avoid her if you can.
Mandatory classes with no lecture recordings, only terrible to read transcripts. Exam was obscenely hard. Clearly doesn't care about what she's teaching. Avoid her.
Probably my least favourite prof I've taken
worst prof i've ever had. horrible at responding to emails and has no empathy or understanding whatsoever. will never take a class with her again
Fine prof I guess. But course is terrible. Two tests make your entire grade. Weekly participation worth under 1% each weekly. Literally a joke, avoid if can.
would not recommend this prof to anybody. quizzes/exams are unbelievably difficult and involve very ambiguous fill in the blanks and questions that seem deliberately meant to trick you. you need to memorize every study and researcher. lectures don't prepare you for the tests at all. worst class i have ever taken at mac easily.
Well well well... I waited until after the final to write this. Ambiguous questioning all semester, scare tactics, inaccurate exam breakdown, among other things. I've taken online classes before, none this disappointing. Do better! $600 class for spelling errors on the lectures ... I just expect more, especially when we are held at higher standards
Just dont do it unless u need it
Really enjoyed this class with Dr. Mac, her teaching style is unique. I enjoyed her breakdown of things, using a mixture of assignments, tests, and midterm/final. I will say though, I was disappointed at her final exam. It was nothing like the midterm (she ended up curving it, however it still sucks getting completely sidelined at the finish line)
Had this prof for two courses now, both have been quite low in quality. Spelling/content errors on every slide, lectures are not interesting but content is (monotonous, boring). Mandatory password protected attendance with IP address specification is kind of redundant and dumb. Midterm was chill-ish, final was stupid and she had to curve it. Avoid!
The semester went very well and she is a good teacher, but my God the final exam was so much more difficult than anything else we were given.
No matter how prepared you feel you're basically not for her tests, she also has the standard that a 70-78 is a GREAT mark which should tell you everything about her lol. Goodluck if you have her
Second course I have taken with this prof. Both courses had interesting content but monotonous lecture delivery. Tests are much extremely difficult, even when I had a good understanding of content beforehand. Choose different course if you can
Worst professor at MAC. Does not care about her students. STAY FAR AWAY IF YOU CAN. I made a mistake by taking her course
grade breakdowns are awful, large assignments are worth 5-10 percent and the midterms and final are 30-50 each. Her tests are so hard for no reason, they're confusing and there's a lot of fill in the blank. Very hard to do well in her class, this was supposed to be my easiest class and I ended up putting the most time into it and doing the worst
Their marking was so bad for the assignment and they had so many instructions for a 5% worth of an assignment and they had so many assessment for one course.
Testing is difficult for content that's so straightforward and easy (that you have seen already in child psych). I went to every class, took dilligent notes on what she said beyond the slides, and studied hard before each test/exam but still did poorly each time. She thinks 70s are phenomenal marks. Assignments didn't go much better.
Professors tests were extremely hard and often not based on learned content but extra things you would have to know. Expect to have to teach yourself all the material and be graded very hard.
DONT TAKE COURSE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Her tests are extremely hard and unfair. I studied so hard to get an A-. She puts screenshots of lecture slides and tells you to fill them up as part of the final exam, I was supposed to take another social psych course and when i found out she teaches it, I immediately dropped.
So hard to achieve passing grades with this prof. Lecture content is pretty straightforward, but then tests are extremely difficult. Weekly assignments are weighted so light that they hardly make a difference in the final grade. Studied for weeks for the final only to barely pass. If you can, enroll in literally any other course.
Extremely tough grader! I studied for her exams 2 weeks in advance and failed both the midterm and final exam. She doesn't record the lectures but posts the transcripts. This is my second class Ive taken with her and I did not do well on the first one as well.
Her lectures are very interesting and she's usually pretty good at explaining concepts.
i didnt mind her lectures, however, her grading was very strict and the testing material was difficult
While readings are not too necessary for testing (the bulk of it is lecture content), this course was more confusing with the assignment guidelines/criteria. For those considering this course, it was interesting, but make sure to focus on graphs and bolded/repeated concepts or sentences that are repeated/emphasized. Good luck, you've got this!
just avoid her if you can
Taigan is nice and very good at explaining concepts, answering questions and re-explaining if needed. Course breakdown is a bit unfair; quizzes are only worth 1% and don't make much of a difference in your overall grade. As someone who doesn't do well on exams, this is difficult as both midterms and exam are 25% +. Super interesting course though!
Just no. Doesn't know how to teach, is so insanely boring. Makes tests + assignments so hard and unfairly graded. Easily the worst professor at Mac
Taigan, you made this course so unbearable. Content could've been cool if it was any other prof. Maybe take this course if any other instructor is teaching it, but DO NOT if she is.
absolutely not. avoid.
She is an extremely slow lecturer, once took the whole 50-minute period to go over 5 slides. She tries too hard to stump you on her multiple-choice questions that the answer options barely make sense. We had to do 4 quizzes on reading material which had far too many questions for a quiz only worth 1%. Would not recommend.
Dr. Mac ruins this course. The content is amazing but it Dr.T is so rude and dismissive when you ask questions, and she trips you up on tests by using language to trick you. Even if you go to every lecture, do the readings blah blah blah, don't expect to do well. Sometimes it seems like Dr.T hates students and maybe is better suited for another job
HARD PASS. Just avoid her courses. I know she gets an ego boost going by "Dr. Mac" teaching at Mac. She does us all a disservice with her teaching. NO.
second course I've taken with her and I wish I had learned my lesson from the first time. shes on a power trip and doesn't want students to succeed. Her tests are very difficult and weirdly worded. she refuses to record lectures but gives useless transcript that have other students talking because she takes tons of questions. avoid at all costs.
The material could be so interesting with another instructor, but her tests make it discouraging. Even when you understand the content deeply, there's no chance to show it. Grades don't reflect your actual knowledge. Her tests rely on what she sees as "most right," even when it contradicts assigned readings or studies. If you can avoid- DO IT!!!!!!
Dr. Mac is a great prof and you can tell she cares about your success. Be prepared to pay attention during lectures because she often elaborates off of her slides and this is what will be tested on. I found the tests difficult but doable if you study hard. The assignment was fun and unique. Would take another class of hers :)
If you don't have a photographic memory, RUN. Her tests are impossible; you have to study down to the exact variable names on graphs and diagrams. The content is interesting, but her testing is horrible, and she confuses her own content, so even she doesn't know what she's doing. Take this course if it's not her teaching, but otherwise, avoid!!!
Two semesters with Dr. Mac now, to say the least - I'm very glad it's over! Content is boring; 2ap3 was way better content-wise. She will completely sideline you on the final - both times, I've experienced this. Work as hard as you can during the semester, because the final will unreasonably tank your grade. Avoid if you can - brutal!
If you see her name teaching the course, don't take it.
avoid this woman
taigan makes this course so unfairly structured. she is very boring to listen to, rambles about the smallest things (and then makes the tests solely based on those rambles), and is overall a horrible instructor. midterm and final are very large, with quizzes only being 1% each so they barely impact your grade. taigan you should find a new job.
I love Dr. Mac! Easily my favourite professor at McMaster. Always willing to answer questions after class and very considerate and caring of all students. It's easy to do well in her courses if you attend lectures, and the content is engaging and interesting. I have taken two courses with her and both were great!
the personality class is really interesting but such a hard tester. Midterm and final exam sucked (literaly cried after) bc they were so hard. Prof does multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and short answers. She does the topics you dont think will come up for the fill in and short answers. And ofc she makes those question worth 2/3 point on tests.
I was nervous to take a class with Dr. Mac based on some of her reviews but I absolutely loved this course! She was really passionate about the course content which made the lectures super exciting!! I found the class to be very engaging and intriguing! The TA's were also super helpful when asked about ways to improve on the midterms! 10/10!
I honestly think all these negative reviews are written by people who just want good grades for doing nothing. Dr. Mac is a solid prof and has been more than willing to discuss course material one-on-one in a friendly, upbeat manner. I think she cares about what she's teaching and grades fairly! Respect
Her lectures are very interesting and she is easy to listen to and follow along with. Her tests were very fair, you definitely need to study for them but what she tests you on is completely based on what she tells you. The final was harder but still fair from the content.
def the worst professor I've had while at Mac. she is so lifeless and makes coming to class mandatory, it will make you want to rip your hair out. avoid her.
If you enjoy mandatory attendance, exams based on the tiniest, most irrelevant slide details, and a final full of fill-in-the-blanks that seem designed to confuse rather than test understanding, you're in for a treat. Otherwise, for the sake of your GPA (and sanity), you might want to consider literally any other option.
Horrible teaching, ridiculous testing…
I'm really disappointed with how this course has gone. Out of all my years at McMaster, I have never put so much effort into a course to then get put down SO HARD. Dr. Mac is a a really nice person but her tests are AWFUL. I wish that it was more clear what she was expecting, gave us more practice questions, and would let us see our tests/questions
Horrible redundant lectures. Testing is abysmal, the level of the readings and lectures is nowhere near the difficulty of evaluations.
Dr Mac always makes sure to explain course concepts in a way that is understandable for everyone, always giving us the chance to ask questions and going through material that we often find difficult. As long as you study lecture notes in great detail, you should be fine for the tests.
10/10. Shes chill and her lectures are easy to follow. Tests especially the final are straightforward
